New records in Trump documents case raise concerns over business conflict, US lawmaker says

    2026-03-25T15:37:53.433Z / Reuters

    • Summary
    • Memo says documents were scanned, uploaded: lawmaker
    • Some items pertinent to Trump’s business interests, Raskin says
    • DOJ, White House dismiss Raskin claims as political

WASHINGTON, March 25 (Reuters) – Newly released records in the now-dismissed classified documents case against U.S. President Donald Trump raise fresh concerns over national security risks and potential private business motivations, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee said.

The records, handed over by the U.S. Department of Justice as part of the Republican-led ‌panel’s probe into former U.S. Special Counsel Jack Smith’s investigations into Trump, show FBI investigators in a 2023 memo said the classified documents kept by Trump after he left office were “pertinent to his business interests” and were found commingled with other documents created later, U.S. Representative Jamie Raskin said.

Some of the classified documents were also “so sensitive that only six people in the entire U.S. government had access to them,” while one box of documents was scanned, stored on a Trump aide’s laptop for nearly two years and uploaded to a cloud, raising further security concerns, Raskin added.

The newly released information also showed that Trump apparently took classified documents on board a June 2022 flight to his New Jersey golf club and showed a classified map to then top campaign official Susie Wiles and potentially others, according to his letter. Wiles now serves as White House chief of staff.

“This glimpse into the trove of evidence behind the cover-up reveals a President of the United States who may have sold out our national security to enrich himself,” Raskin wrote in a letter sent Tuesday to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi.

The release of the documents to the congressional committee may have also violated a gag order imposed by the Trump-appointed federal judge in the case, he added.

Trump was accused in the case led by Smith of illegally storing documents related to U.S. national defense, including the American nuclear program, at his Mar-a-Lago social club and obstructing U.S. government efforts to retrieve the material.

Florida-based U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, appointed by Trump in 2020, dismissed the charges in 2024, ruling that Smith was ‌improperly appointed as special counsel. Last month, she blocked the Justice Department from releasing the prosecutor’s report on the case.

The Justice Department, in a post on X, on Wednesday accused Raskin of being “blinded by his hatred of Trump” and called the Maryland Democrat’s letter “a cheap political stunt.” It also denied that the release of any records violated any judicial orders, calling the accusation “baseless.”

Trump has repeatedly denied wrongdoing in the documents case as well as a separate federal case accusing Trump of attempting to overturn his 2020 election defeat, which was dismissed after Trump won the 2024 presidential election.

“It’s pathetic that Democrats with zero credibility like Jamie Raskin are still clinging to deranged Jack Smith and his lies in 2026,” White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson said in a statement. “President Trump did nothing wrong.”

In his letter to Bondi, Raskin raised specific concerns about Trump’s business dealings in the Middle East at the time, including Saudi-backed LIV Golf and Saudi developer Dar Al Arkan, especially in light of the Republican president’s current war in Iran.

“If this map is related to our military posture in the Middle East, and it was in fact shown to any foreign official, Saudi or otherwise, that would amount to an unforgiveable betrayal of our men and women in uniform who are currently valiantly fighting in President Trump’s disastrous war against Iran,” Raskin wrote.

The Justice Department’s documents to lawmakers included a flight manifest from the June 3, 2022 trip with a map of the plane from Palm Beach, Florida, to LaGuardia airport in New York with the names of the passengers redacted.

Raskin asked the department to identify the passengers and provide other information about the documents by March 31.

Supreme Court sides with Cox Communications in copyright dispute over pirated music

    March 25, 2026 / 11:11 AM EDT / CBS News

Washington — The Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that internet service provider Cox Communications cannot be held liable for copyright infringement by its subscribers in a closely watched dispute over pirated music.

The high court ruled unanimously in favor of Cox, finding that the company cannot be held liable for infringement that occurred on its network. The decision reverses a ruling from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit.

The case, Cox Communications, Inc. v. Sony Music Entertainment, was brought in 2018 by Sony and other major recording and publishing companies. The music companies argued that Cox was legally responsible for willfully infringing more than 10,000 of their copyrighted works because it continued to provide internet services to known infringers who downloaded and distributed songs without permission. A jury sided with the music companies and awarded $1 billion in damages.

On appeal, the 4th Circuit upheld part of the verdict and found that “supplying a product with knowledge that the recipient will use it to infringe copyrights is exactly the sort of culpable conduct sufficient for contributory infringement.” But the appeals court set aside the $1 billion damages award and sent the case back to the jury for a new trial on damages.

Writing for the majority, Justice Clarence Thomas said that a service provider like Cox is responsible for piracy by its users “only if it intended that the provided service be used for infringement.” Cox, he said, took steps to discourage copyright infringement by its users, including by sending warnings, suspending services and terminating accounts.

“Cox did not tailor its service to make copyright infringement easier,” he wrote. “Cox simply provided Internet access, which is used for many purposes other than copyright infringement.”

Thomas wrote that Cox provided internet service to subscribers but didn’t intend for its connection to be used to commit copyright infringement.

“Holding Cox liable merely for failing to terminate Internet service to infringing accounts would expand secondary copyright liability beyond our precedents,” he said.

Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Ketanji Brown Jackson agreed with the outcome of the case but disagreed with the reasoning.

Sony and the other plaintiffs “cannot prove that Cox had the requisite intent to aid copyright infringement for Cox to be held liable on a common-law aiding-and-abetting theory,” Sotomayor wrote in a concurring opinion joined by Jackson.

The Trump administration backed Cox in the case, arguing that an internet service provider doesn’t commit copyright infringement by failing to cut off subscriber accounts that will commit infringement.

Shock and disbelief at Houston airport as 36% of TSA officers call out of work: “This is insane” – CBS News

    Updated on: March 25, 2026 / 9:46 AM EDT / CBS News

Travelers at a Houston airport voiced shock and disbelief over seemingly endless TSA security lines caused by a severe staffing shortage.

“This is insane,” one traveler said. “This is the first time I’ve experienced something like this in my entire life,” said another.

The line at George Bush Intercontinental Airport snakedunderground, across terminals and even outside as 36% of TSA officers there called out of work amid a partial government shutdown that has frozen their paychecks.

Among those spotted in the security line Wednesday morning was former U.S. Attorney General Bill Barr, waiting for two hours and counting.

Nay Dedrick of Boston said she missed her flight after waiting “6 to 8 hours” on Monday in the long security line in Houston, so she slept at the airport and tried again the next day, finally arriving home Tuesday afternoon.

“TSA was only 2 people working,” she told CBS News Boston. “The line started downstairs and went all the way down to the basement, and then it goes all the way back up to the third floor.”

Some travelers said they don’t blame TSA officers for the substantial wait times, but instead blame the government, which is deadlocked over funding.

Talks are ongoing among lawmakers to restart funding for the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees both TSA and ICE. Senate Republicans on Tuesday sent a proposal to Democrats that would fund most of the department, except for ICE’s deportation division.

Democrats, however, have so far refused to strike a deal without reforms to the agency’s immigration enforcement operations.

“We need strong, strong reforms, and we need to rein in ICE,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said at the Capitol.

Amid the deadlock, the Trump administration has deployed ICEofficers and other Homeland Security agents to 14 of the nation’s airports to help shuttle passengers through overcrowded TSA checkpoints.

“It’s unconscionable that our politicians haven’t gotten this done, and then we have security agents that are not being paid and they’re still showing up, and kudos to them for doing that,” United CEO Scott Kirby told CBS News.

“It gets worse every day as it goes by,” he said. “But the crazy thing about this is that … that’s what causes our politicians to get it done. Like, it’s just ridiculous to me, that it has to get bad before they can get a deal done.”

“But please, get the deal done soon,” he urged lawmakers.

Long security lines aren’t the only frustration for fliers. Kirby said higher oil prices as a result of the Iran war are forcing his airline to cut about 5% of flights this summer and raise the price people pay for airline tickets.

“Airfares are up probably 15 to 20% in the last month,” he said, noting that the hikes don’t fully cover the higher cost of fuel.

He said, however, that summer is still “booking really well, and demand is the strongest it’s been ever.”

(National Association for the Advancement of Color People, NAACP)担任总法律顾问。

The former assistant attorney general for civil rights under President Joe Biden, Kristen Clarke, is joining the National Association for the Advancement of Color People (NAACP) as general counsel, according to the organization.

Clarke was previously the top civil rights lawyer at the Justice Department where she led the Civil Rights Division. Her move to the NAACP comes as the Justice Department under President Donald Trump has been redoubling its efforts around elections and voting rights.

“The move comes as the Trump Administration works to erode democratic institutions and dismantle civil rights protections. To meet the moment, the NAACP is expanding its own capabilities and ramping up its investment in its legal advocacy efforts by hiring the former senior Justice Department official to fight back,” the NAACP said in the news release about Clarke’s hire.

Clarke started her career at the Justice Department as a trial attorney for the civil rights division in 2000. In 2006, she was hired by the NAACP Legal Defense Fund to focus on the organization’s work with voting rights and election law. During her time at the NAACP, Clarke worked on several cases defending the Voting Rights Act.

She went on to work on civil rights issues for the state of New York and in courts across the country.

“The NAACP has stood on the front lines of justice for over a century, and I’m deeply honored to join this historic organization at this critical moment in our democracy,” Clarke said in a statement announcing her new role as NAACP general counsel.

The Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division is less active during Republican administrations, but the Trump administration has used it to reverse policies that promote diversity, equity and inclusion and enforce its own agenda.

As of last April, Clarke’s successor, Harmeet Dhillon, had slashed the Civil Rights Division by roughly 70% since assuming the role in order to prioritize goals of the Trump administration.

She said at the time she intended to replace those lawyers so the department could focus on efforts that included rooting out anti-Christian bias, antisemitism and what she called “woke ideology,” among other things.

CNN reached out to the Justice Department for comment.
