Kyle Busch, two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, dies at 41 after severe illness, family says

    Updated on: May 21, 2026 / 7:54 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Kyle Busch, a two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion, died Thursday after being hospitalized with what his family called a “severe illness.” He was 41.

“We are devastated to announce the sudden and tragic passing of Kyle Busch,” his family, NASCAR and Richard Childress Racing said in a joint statement. “Our entire NASCAR family is heartbroken by the loss of Kyle Busch. A future Hall of Famer, Kyle was a rare talent, one who comes along once in a generation.”

Busch, originally from Las Vegas, holds the record for most wins in the top three NASCAR divisions, and won Cup Series championships in 2015 and 2019. He was in his fourth season at Richard Childress Racing after winning titles with Joe Gibbs Racing.

According Richard Childress Racing, Buch has 63 wins in the NASCAR Cup Series and held an all-time NASCAR record with 19 consecutive seasons with a victory from 2004 to 2023.

“Throughout a career that spanned more than two decades, Kyle set records in national series wins, won championships at NASCAR’s highest level and fostered the next generation of drivers as an owner in the Truck Series,” the statement said. “His sharp wit and competitive spirit sparked a deep emotional connection with race fans of every age, creating the proud and loyal ‘Rowdy Nation.’”

The news comes 11 days after Busch radioed into his crew near the end of a Cup Series race at Watkins Glen asking a doctor to give him a “shot” after he finished the race. According to the TV broadcast, Busch had been struggling with a sinus cold that was exacerbated by the intense G-forces and elevation changes at the New York road course.

Busch finished the race in eighth place.

Busch competed at Dover in Delaware last weekend and won the Trucks Series race for Richard Childress Racing. He finished 17th at the NASCAR All-Star race.

“Absolute shock. Very hard to process,” veteran NASCAR driver Brad Keselowski posted on social media.

NASCAR driver and former teammate Denny Hamlin posted on social media: “Absolutely cannot comprehend this news. We just need to think of his family during this time. We love you KB.”

A polarizing figure known as “Rowdy” and “Wild Thing” for his post-race fights, regular feuds with other drivers and sometimes outlandish behavior, the multi-talented Busch stormed on the Cup Series scene in 2005 by winning Rookie of the Year.

From Las Vegas, Busch experienced unrivaled success across NASCAR’s three national series winning a combined 234 Cup, O’Reilly Auto Parts and Trucks Series races. Along with his 63 Cup victories, he had 102 O’Reilly Auto Parts wins and 69 Trucks victories — both records.

Busch is the younger brother of Kurt Busch, a NASCAR Hall of Famer.

Kyle Busch was said to be ready to race at NASCAR’s top level at 16, but a cigarette settlement banned his debut and he had to wait until he was a 18. At the time, Kurt Busch said, “If you think I’m good, wait until you see my brother.” Busch is survived by his wife, Samantha, and children Brexton and Lennix.

US drops case against protesters of Chicago immigration blitz

    • Summary
    • ‘Broadview Six’ had been accused of impeding a federal officer
    • Latest US case to fall apart in Trump immigration crackdown
    • Federal agents clashed with Chicago-area protesters last fall

May 21 (Reuters) – Chicago U.S. Attorney Andrew Boutros said his office is dropping all remaining criminal charges against four people who were indicted after protesting last year outside a holding facility in Broadview, Illinois.

A trial had been scheduled to start Tuesday, May 26, in the incident at the Broadview facility, which became a flashpoint of President Donald Trump’s immigration blitz. The prosecution’s decision to drop the charges made it the latest Justice Department case to fall apart.

Jumpstart your morning with the latest legal news delivered straight to your inbox from The Daily Docket newsletter. Sign up here.

Boutros told a federal judge on Wednesday that the charges against Kat Abughazaleh, a former journalist who recently lost a Democratic primary race for a U.S. House seat, Andre Martin, Michael Rabbitt and Brian Straw are being dismissed with prejudice, meaning they cannot be refiled, a spokesperson for his office said.

The four defendants had faced misdemeanor charges of impeding a federal officer after prosecutors last month dismissed a felony conspiracy charge against them. They were part of the “Broadview Six” along with two others — Catherine Sharp and Joselyn Walsh — whose cases were completely dropped by prosecutors earlier this year.

“I am relieved to be exonerated today, but I want to state clearly that fighting these unjust federal charges over the past seven months was never just about me or my co-defendants in this case,” Straw, a shareholder at U.S. law firm Greenberg Traurig and a member of the Village Board for Chicago suburb Oak Park, said in a statement.

Terence Campbell and Valerie Davenport, attorneys for Martin, said in a statement that their client and his codefendants have been “living under the threat of going to prison simply for exercising their First Amendment rights as decent, honorable citizens and seeking to protect their fellow human beings.”

A spokesperson for the Chicago U.S. Attorney’s Office declined to comment further. Boutros last month said his office was “constantly evaluating the facts and law in our Operation Midway Blitz cases, as well as new information when it is brought to our attention.”

Prosecutors had accused Abughazaleh and the others of crowding around a government vehicle driven by a federal agent, hindering its progress into the Broadview facility during a September 26 protest. They allegedly banged and pushed on the vehicle, scratched the word “pig” into its body, and broke a rear windshield wiper.

The Trump administration’s crackdown, dubbed Operation Midway Blitz, led to thousands of arrests as federal immigration agents clashed with protesters from September until December. Agents shot two people, including one person fatally, and threatened to shoot others, body-cam footage shows.

Agents repeatedly deployed tear gas, pepper balls and rubber bullets at protesters outside the Broadview immigration holding center during near-daily demonstrations and across many Chicago neighborhoods. An independent commission created by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker last month recommended that local prosecutors investigate federal agents for misconduct.

This month, Illinois State Police said they were investigating the death of Silverio Villegas Gonzalez, killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in suburban Chicago.

In another case that fell apart, the Chicago U.S. Attorney’s Office on November 20 dropped charges against Marimar Martinez, who was shot five times by a Border Patrol agent after she allegedly tried to ram agents with her car. On October 5, Martinez, a U.S. citizen and Montessori school teacher in Oak Park, was indicted on charges of impeding a federal officer with a deadly weapon.

In January, a Chicago jury acquitted Juan Espinoza Martinez, whom the Justice Department had charged with plotting a hit on a high-profile Border Patrol official.

    https://www.foxnews.com/video/6395070655112

    https://www.foxnews.com/video/6396227501112

    https://www.foxnews.com/video/6389402318112

Wesley Hunt excoriates SPLC for funding KKK, blasting Democrats for Jim Crow 2.0 claims

Rep. Wesley Hunt, R-Texas, excoriated the Southern Poverty Law Center during a Wednesday hearing focused on the left-wing group’s alleged funding of White supremacist organizations, while the lawmaker also targeted Democrats’ racial rhetoric.

A Black Republican congressman excoriated Democrats and the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) for allegedly perpetuating racist tropes he said had long faded while recounting how his father endured true bigotry in ways far worse than what Americans experience today.

Rep. Wesley Hunt, R-Texas, joined a House Judiciary Committee hearing Wednesday examining the role the SPLC allegedly played in “distorting civil rights policy” by funneling money to racist and extremist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan and whether that funding elevated extremist threats in America.

Hunt began his remarks by noting the idea du jour in the “Democrat hive” is that “Jim Crow 2.0 is alive and well in America” as he sat beside a split image of a Black man standing near a “Colored” sign and a person handing over identification to poll workers.

“I’m sure some of the SPLC’s actions have helped them make this argument,” he said before turning to retired Vanderbilt law and political science professor Carol Swain — who is also Black — and asking her if she experienced any true “Jim Crow” treatment when she last voted in Tennessee.

Rep. Wesley Hunt praises Virginia Supreme Court for ‘right decision’https://www.foxnews.com/video/6395070655112

“Were you intimidated in any way with baseball bats, fire hoses or dogs?” Hunt asked, as Swain replied that the only nervousness she felt was when asking for a Republican ballot in a Democrat-heavy precinct.

Hunt thanked Swain for her testimony and turned to the contrasting image beside him.

“For all my Democrat colleagues, everyone on the left screaming ‘Jim Crow 2.0’ ad infinitum — let’s take a moment to revisit what actual Jim Crow was. Jim Crow was a time when Black Americans could not sit in classrooms with White Americans. It was colored-only water fountains; it was beatings in the streets; it was lynchings.”

Hunt said true Jim Crow was when his father had to go to the back door of restaurants growing up in New Orleans in order to get a sandwich because he could not go in the front like Whites.

“That is precisely why it is so offensive to compare that era of legalized discrimination and racial terror to showing a photo ID at the voting booth.”

“And it is offensive that… groups like these manufacture faux hate,” Hunt said of the SPLC.

WHITE HOUSE KNOCKS CHUCK SCHUMER OVER JIM CROW CLAIM: ‘PROFESSIONAL GASLIGHTER’

During the hearing, which did not feature the SPLC itself, Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights CEO Maya Wiley defended the group, saying attacks from Republicans are “nothing more than part of a larger, broader, coordinated attack on civil rights organizations.”

SPLC was paying racists to be racists: Rep Jim Jordanhttps://www.foxnews.com/video/6396227501112

When it was his turn to speak, Hunt alleged that Democrats who tout the phrase “Jim Crow 2.0” to condemn political policies they disagree with do so because it is the only way they can stay relevant.

“The Democrat Party survives on manufacturing grievance. Democrats invoke the pain of the past because they have nothing to offer for the present. They don’t want an honest debate. They want emotional manipulation. They want outrage. They want division, as evidenced by our discussion in this very hearing today.”

Hunt said that he and the other sitting Black Republicans in the House — Reps. Burgess Owens of Utah, John James of Michigan and Byron Donalds of Florida — all represent White-majority districts, which he said disproves notions from the left on the matter.

“Nobody cares about what we look like. We are being judged not by the color of our skin but by the content of our character because we’ve come a long way from this,” he said, pointing to another split image of a segregation-era scene transposed next to a voting scene.

“I want to continue on the path that America has set forth in the name of Jesus Christ,” he said.

“This is not 1960 anymore, it’s 2026. And the fact that groups like these are willing to stroke the flames of hate by funding the KKK.”

He then yielded back to Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio.

Several recent election integrity and related policies enacted by Republicans at the state and federal level have been accused of being newfound Jim Crow roadblocks for minorities.

Chuck Schumer calls voter ID bill ‘Jim Crow 2.0,’ vows to fight ‘tooth and nail’ to block ithttps://www.foxnews.com/video/6389402318112

The most memorable is likely Georgia’s Election Integrity Act, in which Democrats and Major League Baseball sought boycotts of Atlanta for the legislature passing such a bill.

After a 1960s-era segregationist tenor failed to materialize, proponents of such policies, including Sen. Roger Wicker of Mississippi, noted the Democratic din suddenly dissipated.

“These voices have gone strangely silent now that their dire predictions have proved false. Two weeks ago, Georgia held its first election primaries since the new election law took effect, and far from ‘suppressing’ the vote, there was record turnout,” Wicker said in a 2022 statement.

SCHUMER DOUBLES DOWN ON GOP VOTING BILL ‘JIM CROW 2.0’ DESPITE DEMOCRATIC VOTER SUPPORT

Rep. Wesley Hunt, right, shows a poster contrasting true “Jim Crow” and what some Democrats call “Jim Crow 2.0” – showing an ID to vote.(Fox News)

“Early voting increased nearly threefold from 2018 and more than doubled from 2020, a presidential election year. Minority early voting soared as well, with African American voters casting over 100,000 more early ballots than in 2018. All of this must have come as a surprise to voters who had been fed misinformation,” Wicker added.

At the hearing, ranking member Jamie Raskin, D-Md., however, defended SPLC’s “informant program” at issue, which he said shared information about racially charged terror plots with law enforcement and added that he has seen no proof the group’s donors were being deceived.

“Where is the fraud? Where are their lawsuits?” he asked.

The fact the phrase Jim Crow 2.0 continues to be bandied about shows that the divisions cited by Hunt still resonate in some political corners, portending uncertainty into the future on the matter.

President Donald Trump’s first year back in office has seen more than 3 million illegal immigrants leave the United States, including an estimated 2.2 million “self-deportations,” according to figures shared with Fox News Digital by the Department of Homeland Security.

DHS said the administration has also deported nearly 900,000 illegal immigrants and arrested more than 900,000 others as of May 17, framing the numbers as evidence Trump’s immigration crackdown is reshaping migration patterns after record illegal crossings during former President Joe Biden’s administration.

“In President Trump’s first year back in office, more than 3 million illegal aliens have left the U.S. because of the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration including an estimated 2.2 million self-deportations,” a DHS spokesperson told Fox News Digital.

The administration has increasingly promoted self-deportation through the CBP Home app, which allows migrants to voluntarily leave the country with travel assistance and financial support.

DHS says the program costs significantly less than traditional deportation proceedings and is designed to encourage migrants in the country illegally to leave voluntarily.

The figures come as the administration touts dramatic declines in illegal crossings and what officials describe as the end of “catch-and-release” policies at the southern border.

Last week, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said Border Patrol had gone a full year without releasing illegal immigrants directly into the U.S. interior after apprehension at the border.

SOUTHERN BORDER APPREHENSIONS PLUNGE MORE THAN 90% FROM YEAR AGO IN APRIL, CBP SAYS

CBP said Border Patrol recorded 8,943 apprehensions at the southwestern border in April, a 94% drop from the Biden administration’s monthly average and 96% below the December 2023 peak.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said last week that “the days of catch and release are over,” arguing the administration’s enforcement policies are deterring migrants from attempting to enter the country illegally.

The administration has also pointed to increased ICE operations, tighter asylum restrictions and expanded interior enforcement as factors contributing to what officials describe as a broader deterrence effect.

Immigration analysts say the administration’s tougher enforcement posture has clearly reduced illegal crossings, though some dispute how DHS characterizes some of the figures tied to migrant releases and removals.

US House Republicans cancel Iran war powers vote

WASHINGTON, May 21 (Reuters) – Republican leaders of the U.S. House of Representatives unexpectedly canceled a vote on Thursday on a resolution seeking to end the Iran war unless President Donald Trump obtains Congress’ authorization, two days after a similar ‌measure advanced in the U.S. Senate.

The vote had been scheduled to take place late Thursday afternoon, just before lawmakers left Washington for their Memorial Day recess.

The Reuters Iran Briefing newsletter keeps you informed with the latest developments and analysis of the Iran war. Sign up here.

The House had blocked three previous war powers resolutions in close votes earlier this year, with near-unanimous support from Republicans, underscoring the strong backing for the Iran war and the president within his party.

But the margins had become increasingly narrow – the last resolution failed on a tie vote – as weeks passed since the U.S. and Israel began striking Iran on February 28. Thursday’s measure looked likely to pass, given expected defections by a handful of Republicans and the absences of others.

“We had the votes without question, and they knew it,” Representative Gregory Meeks, the top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told reporters after the vote was canceled.

He said the chamber’s Republican leaders had delayed the vote until early June, ‌after the Memorial Day recess.

Democrats, and a few Republicans, have called on Trump to come to Congress for authorization to use military force, noting that the U.S. Constitution says that Congress, not the president, can declare war. They have expressed concerns that Trump may have entered the country into a long conflict without setting out a clear strategy.

Most Republicans, and the White House, say Trump’s actions are legal and within his rights as commander-in-chief to protect the U.S. by ordering limited military operations to stop imminent threats.

Republicans control narrow majorities in both the House and Senate.

On Tuesday, the Senate advanced a separate, but similar, war powers resolution, in a rare rebuke of Trump. That procedural vote on whether to advance the measure for further votes was 50 to 47, as four of Trump’s fellow Republicans voted with every Senate Democrat but one in favor. Three Republicans missed that vote.

    Summary

    • House GOP leaders canceled a vote Thursday on a resolution to limit President Donald Trump’s war powers in Iran.
    • Republicans were on the verge of losing the vote due to absences.
    • Democrats have forced multiple votes to limit Trump’s war powers, efforts that have gained more GOP support in recent weeks.

AI-generated summary was reviewed by a CNN editor.

House GOP leaders abruptly canceled a vote Thursday on a resolution to limit President Donald Trump’s war powers in Iran just as Republicans were on the verge of losing the vote due to absences.

The resolution was introduced by New York Democratic Rep. Gregory Meeks, the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The congressman told reporters Wednesday that he thought House Speaker Mike Johnson had been stalling a vote on the measure.

“A lot of my Republican colleagues are feeling the pressure back home when they’re looking at the cost of food, the cost of gas,” he said on Capitol Hill.

Democrats have repeatedly forced votes to limit Trump’s war powers in both the House and the Senate – a campaign that has slowly picked up more GOP support in recent weeks.

Massachusetts Rep. Jim McGovern spoke on the House floor to ask what was happening with the Iran war powers resolution that had been set to be voted on.

“Are we not voting on it because the American people are sick and tired of this illegal war that is costing tens of billions of dollars? Gas prices are through the roof. People can’t afford, people can’t afford their groceries. Is that why you’re pulling it?” he said.

Meeks similarly criticized the move to cancel the vote.

“Here we are on the eve of Memorial Day, with prices for gasoline going up, prices for food going up. We had a vote because of this president’s war of choice that was going to pass, we had the votes without question, and they knew it, and as a result they’re playing a political game, they’re cheating and have delayed the vote until we get back,” the congressman told reporters after the vote was delayed.

Meeks told reporters the vote is now expected to take place in early June after the chamber returns from its Memorial Day recess.

Earlier this week, the Senate advanced a similar resolution to limit Trump’s ability to carry out military action against Iran without congressional approval.

The cancelled House vote comes after President Donald Trump told reporters earlier this week that he believes the US campaign against Iran has been popular among Americans.

“Look, everyone tells me it’s unpopular, but I think it’s very popular when you, when they hear that it’s having to do with nuclear weapons, weapons that could take out Los Angeles, could take out major cities very quick,” Trump told reporters at the White House.

A recent CNN poll showed 77% – including a majority of Republicans – say that Trump’s policies have increased the cost of living in their own community.

Bipartisan House bill would ban use of federal money for DOJ’s “anti-weaponization” fund

Washington — Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick of Pennsylvania and Democratic Rep. Tom Suozzi of New York introduced a bill Thursday to ban the use of federal money for paying out claims from the Justice Department’s new “anti-weaponization” fund.

The bill, titled the Bipartisan Transparency for American Taxpayers Act, comes as Republicans fight over the nearly $1.8 billion fund that was established to compensate people who claim they were improperly targeted or investigated by the government. Allies and supporters of the president, including some of those involved in the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, have said they plan to submit claims for payouts.

The fund was created as part of a settlement of a suit by President Trump against the IRS over a leak of his tax returns, a highly unusual arrangement that has elicited strong criticism from Democrats and a growing number of Republicans on Capitol Hill.

Fitzpatrick and Suozzi’s two-page bill says “no federal funds … may be used for the payment of any claim submitted to the Anti-Weaponization Fund, established by the Department of Justice on May 18, 2026.”

“Congress has a constitutional responsibility to protect taxpayer dollars and oversee federal spending,” Fitzpatrick said in a statement. “Taxpayer dollars will not become a discretionary payout fund. Transparency is not optional. Accountability is not negotiable.”

Suozzi said the “slush fund” would set a “dangerous precedent.”

In a letter to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche on Wednesday, Fitzpatrick expressed “urgent concern” about the fund, which was established “with no oversight or approval from Congress.” He asked that Blanche respond to him by June 1 about where the money is coming from, who would be eligible to receive it and under what authority the fund was created.

On Thursday, opposition to the DOJ fund derailed hopes for passage of Republicans’ reconciliation package to provide money for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Border Patrol for three years, which GOP leaders were hoping to get through both chambers by the end of the week to meet Mr. Trump’s June 1 deadline.
