Navy’s acting secretary says $14 billion Taiwan arms sale put on “pause” over Iran war

    May 21, 2026 / 11:41 PM EDT / CBS/AFP

The acting secretary of the U.S. Navy said Thursday that arm sales to Taiwan had been put on “pause” to ensure that the American military had sufficient munitions for its Iran operations.

Asked at a congressional hearing about the stalled $14 billion weapons purchase by Taiwan, Acting Secretary Hung Cao said that “right now we’re doing a pause in order to make sure we have the munitions we need for Epic Fury — which we have plenty.”

“But, we’re just making sure we have everything, then the foreign military sales will continue when the administration deems necessary.”

The State Department and the Pentagon did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Cao’s remarks.

President Trump has not committed to following through with the sale, raising concerns over his commitment to support for Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory.

Ahead of his recent state visit to China, Mr. Trump said he would speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping about the arms sales, a departure from Washington’s previous insistence that it will not consult Beijing on the matter.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on May 15 after departing Beijing, Mr. Trump confirmed Xi had brought up the U.S. weapons sale. The president told reporters he made “no commitment either way” on the issue and declined to publicly state whether the U.S. would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack.

Following his remarks, congressional lawmakers from both parties said that the Trump administration should continue to provide arms to Taiwan.

The U.S. must “arm Taiwan so they can defend themselves for deterrence against Chairman Xi,” Rep. Michael McCaul, a Texas Republican and former House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman, said last week.

The U.S. recognizes only Beijing, but under U.S. law is required to provide weapons to Taiwan, a self-ruled democracy, for its defense.

China has sworn to take the island and has not ruled out using force, ramping up military pressure in recent years.

WASHINGTON, May 21 (Reuters) – Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin privately warned that authorities could stop processing international travelers ‌and cargo at major U.S. airports in “sanctuary cities” that have declined to cooperate with the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, sources told Reuters.

Mullin, who publicly made the threat in April during a Department of Homeland Security funding dispute, privately told travel executives last week that the department could opt to stop customs and immigrations processing of international travelers at airports in cities such as Denver, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Newark, Seattle and San Francisco.

The Atlantic earlier reported Mullin’s comments to travel executives and cited sources as saying the move would likely occur some time after the end of the FIFA World Cup in the United States in July.

    DHS declined to comment.

Airlines for America, which represents major passenger and cargo airlines, said reducing customs staffing “at ‌major airports would have a devastating effect on the airline and tourism industries, causing a significant operational disruption to carriers, travelers and the flow of international cargo.”

U.S. Travel, which represents major airlines, hotel chains, rental car firms and others, said on “domestic and international inbound travel alike, we urge governments at all levels to adopt policies that promote the free and efficient flow of legitimate travelers.”

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said at a U.S. House hearing Thursday that he was not familiar with Mullin’s remarks and did not express support.

“We shouldn’t shut down air travel in a state that doesn’t agree with our politics,” Duffy said

More than 50 million international travelers arrived at the three major New York airports alone last year.

Epstein’s longtime assistant accused three previously unknown abusers connected to him, Oversight chair says

Jeffrey Epstein’s longtime assistant gave the House Oversight Committee three new names of alleged abusers in the convicted sex offender’s network — a revelation that committee chairman James Comer described as a promising lead in his panel’s investigation into Epstein’s misdeeds.

The assistant, Sarah Kellen, provided the names in a closed-door interview on Thursday, Comer said. He declined to name the individuals, but said they were not previously known and promised to release a transcript of Kellen’s interview as soon as possible.

“The new names, that’s what we’ve been waiting for,” Comer said, adding, “I’m more optimistic today than I have been a long time.”

Kellen is a polarizing figure in Epstein’s orbit whose work with the disgraced late financier gave her access to significant information on his activities. In 2007, she was labeled by law enforcement as one of Epstein’s potential co-conspirators, and many believe she helped him recruit and abuse girls. But she has described herself as a victim of Epstein’s abuse, and some observers acknowledge her experience is complicated, even if law enforcement did investigate her for possibly aiding Epstein.

Throughout hours of closed-door testimony on Thursday, Kellen said she was not Epstein’s co-conspirator and had no idea she was going to be named in Epstein’s non-prosecution agreement from the early 2000s. On the contrary, Kellen testified she “worked for and was sexually and psychologically abused by Jeffrey Epstein,” according to a copy of her opening remarks shared with CNN.

Kellen described in graphic detail some of the sexual abuse she says she endured.

“I want this Committee to know that the abuse happened on average on a weekly basis, and was at times violent,” Kellen said, according to the remarks. “It included Jeffrey entering my room in the middle of the night and putting his fingers inside me, waking me up from my sleep. It included an occasion in Palm Beach when he trapped me in the gym by lowering the metal hurricane shutter, blasted the music so loud that no one could hear, choked me, and violently raped me.”

Democratic Rep. Melanie Stansbury told reporters that she asked Kellen about her experience at Epstein’s New Mexico ranch, where a state investigation is ongoing, and Kellen said that was one of the places she was abused by Epstein.

Kellen said that for years, it was simply not possible for her to leave Epstein’s powerful grip: “I had nowhere else to go. I had no money, no family, no education, and no sense that I deserved any better.”

Stansbury said she also asked Kellen if she believed Epstein’s co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell should have been moved to a lower security prison or if Maxwell should receive a presidential pardon. To both questions, Kellen said no, and even cast blame on Maxwell for some of Epstein’s wrongdoing, saying “Maxwell turned Epstein into the monster he became,” according to Stansbury.

House Oversight Committee Chairman Rep. James Comer (R-KY) speaks to reporters before Jeffrey Epstein’s former assistant Sarah Kellen testifies at a closed-door interview with the House Oversight Committee on Capitol Hill on Thursday in Washington, DC.

    Andrew Harnik/Getty Images

Comer said that the Justice Department did not interview Kellen until 2019, arguing that was an example that investigators had mishandled the Epstein case. CNN has reached out to the Justice Department for comment.

“More evidence emerges every time we bring somebody in that the government failed the victims. That’s the obvious,” Comer stated.

Comer said that after listening to her testimony, he believes Kellen was a victim of Epstein’s crimes, not a potential co-conspirator.

“Of all the people that we’ve interviewed thus far, this was by far the most substantive and productive interview that we’ve had. She was very brave coming forward. I can’t imagine how difficult it was for her to go into detail about the abuse that she endured at the hands of Epstein and Maxwell,” Comer said.

But others said they had more questions for Kellen. Democratic Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi said the panel should consider bringing Kellen back in for an interview under subpoena because there were a number of questions Kellen didn’t answer in the voluntary setting of Thursday’s interview.

“What I want to hear is more discussion about other actors, other entities, other women, who else were potential conspirators in this,” Krishnamoorthi said.

Another source familiar with Kellen’s testimony told CNN that while Kellen was willing to answer questions about her own abuse, she would not share any information about the abuse she knew others to have suffered.

And while Kellen said she never witnessed any inappropriate behavior by President Donald Trump, she testified that she believed that Epstein and Trump were once close given that Epstein had photographs of Trump hanging around all of Epstein’s properties, the source added.

Comer said that Kellen testified that Epstein used to go to Mar-a-Lago to workout, but Trump kicked him out because Epstein “hit on a members’ daughter or something.”

“The data demonstrates what populist candidates understand intuitively,” says Republican pollster Daron Shaw, who helps conduct the Fox News Poll with Democratic partner Chris Anderson. “Voters think corruption and incompetence are rampant in government, and stories of program fraud from Minneapolis and California reinforce this notion. And articulating this belief plays well with the public. The policy implications are trickier: do you risk restricting aid to the truly vulnerable to ensure taxpayers aren’t being ripped off?”

Voters are split on who bears more responsibility for fraud: individuals misrepresenting eligibility or organizations and contractors misrepresenting costs (50% each).

On fraud prevention, more voters trust their state governments (60% a great deal or some confidence) than the federal government (51%).

There is notable bipartisan consensus on the existence of welfare fraud. To varying degrees, Democrats, Republicans, and independents agree fraud is common, and it has increased in recent years. But beyond that, partisan divisions become much sharper.

Majorities of Democrats are more likely to blame organizations and contractors for fraud and to prioritize ensuring eligible people receive benefits. By contrast, Republicans are more likely to blame individuals who misrepresent eligibility and favor stronger fraud prevention measures.

Independents are split on whether individuals or contractors are more responsible for fraud (50% each) but more prioritize access to benefits (57%) than fraud prevention (43%).

Confidence in state governments cuts across party lines, with majorities of Democrats (65%), independents (59%), and Republicans (56%) trusting their state to prevent fraud.

    Made with Flourish•Create a chart

Views of the federal government are more polarized. Nearly two-thirds of Republicans (63%) express confidence in the federal government’s ability to combat fraud, compared to 42% of Democrats and 47% of independents.

    Congressional Approval

Only 3 in 10 voters approve of the job Congressional Democrats (30%) and Republicans (31%) are doing.

Approval for Congressional Democrats is up 1 point since February (29%, a record low approval). Support for Congressional Republicans has fallen 5 points (36%), and much of that comes from a 10-point drop among Republican voters themselves.

    Made with Flourish•Create a chart

Still, more Republicans approve of their lawmakers (67%) than Democrats do theirs (58%).

“Voters’ unfavorable views of Democratic lawmakers is one of the most fascinating and important factors affecting the midterms,” says Shaw. “Negative assessments of the Republicans are expected; they hold power at a time when the public mood is sour. But to capitalize on this, the Democrats must convince voters they might actually do better.”

    Redistricting

Six in 10 voters are extremely or very concerned about redistricting ahead of the 2026 midterms.

More Democrats than Republicans are concerned (71% vs. 51%) and more than twice as many Democrats say they are extremely concerned (39% D vs. 15% R). Independents are split, with 50% concerned and 49% not concerned, including 22% extremely concerned.

    The Supreme Court

Voters were also asked how they feel about increasing the number of justices on the U.S. Supreme Court and 45% favor the idea while 55% oppose it. Support is unchanged from 2022 and up from a 35% low in 2021. Overall, voters have generally opposed packing the court.

More than half of Democrats (55%) favor expanding the high court, while majorities of independents (56%) and Republicans oppose it (64%).

Conducted May 15-18, 2026, under the direction of Beacon Research (D) and Shaw & Company Research (R), this Fox News survey includes interviews with a sample of 1,002 registered voters randomly selected from a national voter file. Respondents spoke with live interviewers on landlines (109) and cellphones (635) or completed the survey online after receiving a text (258). Results based on the full sample have a margin of sampling error of ±3 percentage points. Sampling error for results among subgroups is higher. In addition to sampling error, question wording and order can influence results. Weights are generally applied to age, race, education, and area variables to ensure the demographics are representative of the registered voter population. Sources for developing weight targets include the most recent American Community Survey, Fox News Voter Analysis, and voter file data.

Democrats revolt over ‘biological’ wording in women’s history museum bill

    2026-05-21 18:04 EDT / Fox News

House Democrats unanimously rebelled against legislation Thursday directing the construction of a new women’s history museum on the National Mall.

Democrats sought to defeat the bill after Republicans limited the institution to biological women and excluded transgender individuals.

The measure came up short in a vote of 204-216 after a handful of conservative GOP lawmakers joined Democrats in tanking the legislation that would secure a site for the forthcoming Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum on the grounds of the Mall.

The defecting Republicans objected to the measure over concerns about whether a women’s history museum was necessary and because the bill did not include protections against left-wing content from appearing in the institution,” a source familiar told Fox News Digital.

WATCH: DEMS GO SILENT, PULL WOMEN’S MONTH RESOLUTION AFTER GOP ASKS FOR SIMPLE DEFINITION

“American women are already proudly honored across the Smithsonian—from pioneers and patriots to scientists and leaders,” the source said. “We don’t need another taxpayer-funded museum that risks becoming a shrine to abortion activists like Margaret Sanger or the latest progressive cause.”

It was not immediately clear whether Republican leadership would attempt to bring the legislation up for a vote at a later date. Eight Republicans did not vote.

Democrats’ widespread opposition to the legislation came after the Democratic Women’s Caucus issued a statement last month accusing Republicans of targeting “transgender women and girls” with an amendment defining the museum around biological women.

The female lawmakers argued the anticipated museum is long overdue, but said they could not support the legislation with the biological women language added, which many characterized as a “poison pill.”

“The Museum shall be dedicated to preserving, researching, and presenting the history, achievements and lived experiences of biological women in the United States,” the amended measure, authored by Rep. Mary Miller, R-Ill., states in part.

    https://www.foxnews.com/video/6396233552112

The museum may not depict “any biological male as female,” it continues, which codifies language in a Trump executive order issued in 2025 barring the inclusion of transgender individuals in the forthcoming museum.

“The addition of the word biological made them all run for the hills,” House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said during a news conference Wednesday. “If that’s controversial in the Democratic Party, we’re in serious trouble. The party that purports to support women, demanding that the museum include biological men.”

Democrats’ decision to withdraw support for the museum measure comes as the party has continued to advocate for transgender rights despite questions over whether those views contributed to its poor performance in the 2024 election. Many Democrats also continue to face GOP scrutiny about providing a definition for “woman.”

DEMOCRATS REFUSE TO DEFINE ‘WOMAN’ WHEN PRESSED ON CAPITOL HILL: ‘COMPLICATED QUESTION’

Democratic lawmakers also slammed amended language in the bill granting the president the authority to choose an “alternative site” within 180 days of the measure’s enactment.

“They amended the bill to give Trump and his allies unregulated power over what content and which women can be included in the museum, and the museum’s location,” Democratic Women’s Caucus Chairwoman Teresa Leger Fernandez, D-N.M., said in a joint statement earlier this week with other female Democratic lawmakers. “A museum about women, fought for and supported by women, should not be controlled by one man.”

Rep. Nicole Malliotakis, R-N.Y., the sponsor of the museum measure, accused Democrats of “hiding behind” that rationale to avoid addressing the transgender provision.

“A women’s history museum is supposed to be dedicated to women, period,” Malliotakis told Fox News. “And the fact that they’re going to pull their support after overwhelmingly co-sponsoring this bill because the word biological was inserted, to me, is ludicrous.”

“They’re going to have to explain to their voters why they believe this museum should not be built and why they believe that there should be transgender exhibits in it,” she added.

Congress previously authorized the women’s history museum in 2020, along with a museum for American Latinos. Some Democrats justified their opposition to the measure over objections that the women’s history museum is advancing without the planned Latino institution.

    Gemini Spark

Why Google’s Gemini Spark AI agent could be a game changer

Google’s Gemini Spark AI tool could be a game-changer for consumers wading into the world of agentic AI, according to technology experts.

Google announced the new tool — the internet giant’s answer to OpenClaw, the autonomous AI agent being hyped by tech enthusiasts and developers — this week during a rollout of new AI features that Google said can complete tasks for users.

“There is a paradigm shift happening right now where AI is going from a chat interface to actually being able to do things for you,” Clarence Lee, a tech entrepreneur and visiting lecturer at the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business, told CBS News.

Lee compared an AI agent like Gemini Spark to a personal assistant to whom you can assign tasks, such as composing emails, making restaurant reservations or booking hotels. “It’s like having a team that you can delegate things to,” he said.

For an individual AI agent to offer optimal performance, it must understand its human users, said Karan Girotra, professor of operations, technology and innovation at Cornell University.

“You give it an objective, and it takes actions to accomplish that on your behalf,” he told CBS News. “For it to be good, it needs intelligence, context and information relevant to those actions.”

That’s where Google could have an edge on competitors. Gemini Spark is integrated into Google’s widely used suite of digital tools, including Gmail and Google Calendar, giving the AI access to important contextual information about a user.

“It knows more about you than many others because it connects to Gmail and other apps, so personal intelligence will come through in the agent,” Girotra said.

    What can Gemini Spark do?

Google on Tuesday said it is testing Gemini Spark this week and rolling it out to Google AI Ultra subscribers, who pay $100 a month for the highest level of access to its AI tools, next week.

“Spark represents a big shift for Gemini, transforming it from an assistant that can answer your questions into an active partner that does real work on your behalf and under your direction,” Google said in a blog post.

Gemini Spark syncs up with Gmail, Docs, Slides and other Google apps. With access to your inbox, it can comb through your emails and alert you to updates from your kids’ school, or remind you about key deadlines, Google said. The agent can also synthesize your meeting notes into a polished document highlighting key takeaways, Google said.

Gemini Spark can complete tasks outside Google’s ecosystem by connecting to external tools such as Instacart and OpenTable, according to the Alphabet-owned company. That enables users to ask Gemini Spark, for example, to make a dinner reservation or buy groceries.

    AI at your own risk

As always with technology, privacy could be a concern. The more tasks AI completes for people, the more information it can access — a potential risk as AI puts powerful new tools in the hands of hackers, or simply a magnet for advertisers.

For instance, linking an agent with Instacart means it is learning about your food preferences, while letting it sift through your email could expose sensitive information.

Google said Gemini Spark will need to obtain a user’s permission before executing “high-stakes actions like spending money or sending emails.”

Still, Cornell’s Lee advised moving gradually into the world of AI agents by initially entrusting them with low-level tasks.

“The first time you onboard an assistant, you don’t know how good they are, so you try them out a little bit before you hand over your credit card,” he said. “You might have them draft emails or create a grocery list, so I recommend that users start that way.”
