WASHINGTON, June 22 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday ordered a push to build a powerful quantum computer for scientific research and speed efforts to protect government ‌systems from related cyber threats, bolstering U.S. efforts in its race with China for a technology that could upend science and cybersecurity.

“We believe this can happen by 2028,” Michael Kratsios, director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said in a call previewing the moves and referring to the quantum computer.

Trump signed two executive orders, one of which seeks to protect government computers against quantum computer-fueled cyberattacks by setting a goal of migrating key government computing systems to post-quantum cryptography by 2030 or 2031.

Quantum computers use the laws of quantum physics to process information in ways that can solve certain complex problems far faster than even today’s supercomputers. They could unscramble the encryption that protects computers from hacking, raising fears of aggressive cyberattacks.

The orders underscore the importance the Trump administration places on securing U.S. leadership in the quantum race against China – which could fuel advances in artificial intelligence, materials science and chemistry – while also protecting against the cybersecurity threats posed by the ‌technology.

The order also calls for the Pentagon to deploy quantum sensors by 2028. Such sensors can help aircraft navigate in war zones where global positioning systems have been disrupted and, when put in satellites, could also be used to detect underground activity such as the construction of tunnels or missile silos from space.

“There’s lots of interesting things quantum sensing can bring before quantum computing,” said Matthew Kinsella, CEO of Infleqtion , who attended the signing of the order in the Oval Office. “It’s possible to meet these types of timelines.”

Last month, the Commerce Department announced it would take $2 billion in equity stakes across nine quantum-computing companies, including a new IBM (IBM.N), opens new tab venture.

One of the orders also aims to strengthen international cooperation on intellectual property protections and supply chain security measures “in light of competitors and adversaries looking to undermine U.S. economic and national security,” Kratsios said.

Another measure included in the package instructs agencies to develop plans for deploying quantum-enabled sensors and networks in the next five years.

Senate passes housing bill in bid to ease supply crunch, high costs

    • Summary
    • Companies
    • The bill now goes to the House of Representatives for final passage
    • It would cap large Wall Street firms at 350 single-family homes
    • A pilot program would expand access to mortgages of $100,000 or less

WASHINGTON, June 22 (Reuters) – The U.S. Senate passed a bipartisan affordable housing bill on Monday as Congress attempts to finish work on it by the end of this week and ‌clear the way for President Donald Trump to sign the legislation into law.

The measure is designed to increase the availability of affordable single-family homes at a time when high consumer prices are voters’ main worry ahead of November midterm elections. The bill now goes to the House of Representatives for final passage.

Jumpstart your morning with the latest legal news delivered straight to your inbox from The Daily Docket newsletter. Sign up here.

Here are five important elements of the legislation, called the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act:

AIMING TO FIX A HOUSING SHORTAGE

The United States has been struggling with a shortage of affordable housing for years. The causes range from outdated regulations pushing up the cost of home-building to the 2008 financial crisis that has left a lasting mark, especially in southeastern states, the industrial Midwest and parts of the Southwest.

There are varying estimates on the number of new homes needed, from 1.5 million to 7.3 million.

PLACING RESTRAINTS ON LARGE, INSTITUTIONAL INVESTORS

The legislation would restrict the number of single-family homes that Wall Street investment firms could control to 350 per firm. This latest version of the bill deleted a Senate provision that would have forced those investors to sell off the holdings within seven years.

Proponents of the cap argue large investors help pump up prices by outbidding individual buyers.

    LEGISLATING SPEEDIER PERMITTING

Environmental reviews for construction projects would be waived or sped up, and more financing would be freed through federal block grants to states. A U.S. Department of Agriculture rural housing program would be revamped.

Overall, ‌the bill is a compilation of 36 housing measures passed under one bill by the Senate in March and 11 by the House in May.

    EYEING POLITICAL RAMIFICATIONS

Trump and his fellow Republicans campaigned hard in 2024 on a promise of tackling inflation and the resulting high cost of living. The opposite has occurred.

The annual rate of inflation in the United States was 4.2% for the 12 months ending in May, the highest in over three years, largely due to higher energy costs stemming from the U.S. war on Iran. Even with a potential peace deal, it could take a while for energy and related prices to come down.

The average 30-year fixed-rate mortgage is now at 6.47%, up from 6.11% in mid-March.

With the midterm election campaigns now heating up, Republicans and Democrats want to be able to have something tangible to show they are trying to address voters’ demands with this housing bill.

    EXPANDING THE POOL OF BUYERS

With the average first-time home buyer now 40 years old, according to backers of the bill, the goal is to help younger people get into the housing market.

A pilot program would increase access to small-dollar mortgages with principal balances of $100,000 or less, for example.

Senate Banking Committee Chairman Tim Scott, a Republican from South Carolina, said the bill would “lower costs, expand housing supply, cut red tape.”

U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, the senior Democrat on the committee, called it “the biggest housing bill in more than 30 years.”

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/b1da0b74-41c7-42dc-a2d2-8d0e83ff9944

Coke and Pepsi are rolling out QR codes linked to ingredient info

    June 22, 2026 / 5:31 PM EDT / CBS News

Consumers will soon be able to scan certain sodas to get additional nutrition information.

The American Beverage Association on Tuesday said that major companies it represents, including The Coca-Cola Company, Keurig Dr Pepper and PepsiCo, will use QR codes on their packaging that link soda drinkers to a website created by the trade group that provides more information about the beverages’ ingredients.

“Consumers want greater transparency and deserve to have confidence in the safety of their foods and beverages,” American Beverage CEO Kevin Keane said in a statement.

The website, called “Good to Know,” features a list of more than 140 ingredients found in different beverages. Each is accompanied by a definition, the types of products in which the ingredient is found and where it is authorized worldwide.

While some of the listed ingredients will be familiar to consumers, others, such as Lion’s Mane and L-Carnitine, are more obscure. The site does not provide ingredient breakdowns for each brand, so consumers will still need to look at the label on their can or bottle to see exactly what it contains.

Other brands participating in the new QR code initiative include Celsius, Monster Energy, Polar Beverages and Red Bull, according to NBC News.

This isn’t the first time soda brands have used QR codes. Coca-Cola has also used them in promotional campaigns.

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/b1da0b74-41c7-42dc-a2d2-8d0e83ff9944

The American Beverage Association said the information on the “Good to Know” site aligns with that from global food safety agencies. Customers can access safety assessments from the Food and Drug Administration, the European Food Safety Authority and Health Canada.

The initiative comes as Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. moves to curb sweetened drinks as part of his Make America Healthy Again effort.

Earlier this year, the Trump administration asked the public to report hospitals and nursing homes that serve sugary drinks and meals that don’t meet the Department of Agriculture’s dietary guidelines.

Kennedy also recently challenged Starbucks and Dunkin’ over the amount of sugar they add to their beverages, sparking backlash from politicians and coffee drinkers.

Firings now underway at Office of Director of National Intelligence, source says

    2026-06-22T21:32:50.072Z / CNN

    • Firings have begun at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, a source tells CNN.
    • Bill Pulte, the acting director of national intelligence, had been considering cutting jobs after Trump asked him to downsize the office and revert staff to home agencies.
    • Top Democrats warned the cuts risk jeopardizing an organization created after 9/11 to prevent future terrorist attacks.

AI-generated summary was reviewed by a CNN editor.

The large-scale cuts that President Donald Trump’s acting director of national intelligence had been considering imposing at his own office started on Monday, a source familiar with the matter told CNN.

“The deep state firings have begun,” the source said, declining to give details on how many jobs had been cut.

Sources had previously told CNN that Bill Pulte, Trump’s pick to serve as director of national intelligence in an acting capacity, was looking at cutting hundreds of jobs at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI). Last week, Pulte showed up to his new job a day early after asking for a list of every employee in the office, sources told CNN, catching even outgoing director Tulsi Gabbard off-guard.

A source familiar with the matter told CNN that the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) and the National Counterintelligence and Security Center were expected to be hit hard by the cuts.

All offices were asked to provide a list ranking their personnel by Monday, according to two sources familiar with the matter, who associated the request with Pulte’s mandate to carry out mass firings.

The firings came as top Democrats on the Senate and House Intelligence Committees sent a letter on Monday to Pulte warning him of the risks of making large cuts to the workforce.

Sen. Mark Warner and Rep. Jim Himes wrote, “We are concerned by reports that you intend to fire or place on leave hundreds of Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) officers as soon as this week.”

“While there is room to consider responsible reductions to ODNI’s workforce, any large cuts would follow on a substantial downsizing that has already occurred in 2025 and risk jeopardizing the mission of an organization explicitly created after 9/11 to prevent any future such terrorist attack,” the lawmakers wrote.

They continued, “Given your lack of experience within the Intelligence Community, it is difficult to imagine that in such a short amount of time you have already developed fully informed views as to how to shrink ODNI without incurring risks to national security. Making significant structural changes to ODNI, to include a reduction in force, is not an appropriate course of action for anyone in an acting capacity, let alone without consultation with Congress, and you should refrain from doing so.”

When asked about the firings, a White House official pointed to Trump’s recent post on Truth Social in which he telegraphed “downsizing” in the office.

“I have named William Pulte to be Acting Director of National Intelligence, who will take over on June 19th, and have asked him to execute the immediate and needed downsizing of the office, reverting staff to their home agencies,” Trump wrote.

CNN has reached out to ODNI for comment.

Pulte was in the Oval Office as Trump signed executive orders on Monday. When he showed up to work a day early last week, he met with lawyers and staffers.

As director of national intelligence, Pulte oversees 18 intelligence agencies. His appointment irked some of Trump’s closest advisers and allies and caused significant consternation on Capitol Hill, where lawmakers raced to try to confirm Jay Clayton, now the US attorney in Manhattan, to the position permanently, only to have Trump abruptly end Clayton’s participation in a confirmation hearing.

Trump has previously said he wanted Pulte in the role only temporarily, but it is unclear how long that might be. Gabbard had used the post in part to hunt for evidence of voter fraud around the 2020 election that Trump lost, and some fear Pulte will escalate those efforts.

When she served in the post, Gabbard had dozens of photos of herself posted throughout the corridors of the DNI offices in northern Virginia. Two sources told CNN those photos had all been removed as of Monday. The photos were shot by her husband, who is a photographer.

This story has been updated with additional reporting.

A Chicago priest told President Donald Trump to “shut up” following his social media post about a violent Juneteenth weekend that saw at least six people killed and more than 30 others wounded across the city.

Father Michael Pfleger scolded Trump as Chicago community leaders on Monday called for a city agency to tackle gun violence prevention following the weekend’s bloodshed.

From 6 p.m. Friday through 11:59 p.m. Sunday, Chicago had 24 shootings resulting in 39 victims, six of them fatal, according to the Chicago Police Department.

On Sunday, Trump remarked on Chicago’s crime woes in a Truth Social post, suggesting that federal forces be sent into the city.

“Lots of Killing going on in Chicago. 22 people shot, at least 4 Dead,” Trump wrote. “Why isn’t Governor Pritzker calling me for help. I could make Chicago a safe City in ONE MONTH, in ONE YEAR, it would be one of the safest!!! D.C. went from one of the worst, to one of the safest cities in the U.S. President DJT.”

On Monday, Pfleger, a prominent South Side priest at St. Sabina Catholic Church, criticized Trump for highlighting the violence.

“I hear this morning on the news that Donald Trump said he wants to send people,” he said. “He’ll solve the gun violence in a month. First of all, the man lies every day.”

“The reflecting pool was good for 50 years,” Pfleger added. “And Iran was going to be solved in a month. Shut up, Donald. Just send money and restore the money you took away from gun violence prevention for the city of Chicago and across this country. Give the money back now.”

In response to the violence, community groups, faith leaders, and city officials gathered Monday morning at City Hall to support creating a Department of Gun Violence Prevention. The proposed department would focus entirely on reducing gun violence and helping coordinate violence prevention programs across the city, FOX 32 reported.

OUR LEADERS ABANDONED CHICAGO. TRUMP IS RIGHT: IT’S TIME TO CALL IN THE GUARD

State and city leaders have opposed federal intervention, saying they prefer investments in community-level crime prevention programs.

“President Trump’s bold actions in cities like D.C. and Memphis have dramatically reduced violent crime – local Democrat leaders in Chicago should see the President’s incredible results and be begging him to do the same in Chicago,” White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson told Fox News Digital. “Chicago residents and visitors would benefit tremendously from the President’s successful efforts to drive down crime and make American cities safe again.”

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson on Monday said he wished that Trump would “follow Chicago’s lead and invest in Black America,” saying the administration has made cuts to agencies and programs that make communities safer, including slashing funding for education, housing, and health care.

“It’s unfortunate that this president has worked overtime to literally defund the efforts that create safer communities,” Johnson said.

“If you look at Donald Trump’s Black agenda, he promises to do all the things that I’m doing, but he’s failed to do it,” the mayor added, referring to the hiring of more young people, expanded mental health support services, and investing in more affordable homes.

Sen. Dan Sullivan’s same-name challenger sues to stay on ballot

    2026-06-22T22:42:56.707Z / CNN

    AP—

A man with the same name and party affiliation as Alaska Republican US Sen. Dan Sullivan on Monday challenged a decision by a top state elections official to disqualify his candidacy and remove him from the August primary ballot.

A court filing, on behalf of the challenger Sullivan by his attorneys, said the decision by Division of Elections Director Carol Beecher disqualifying him violates state and federal law. It asks that he be placed on the ballot. Sullivan, a retired teacher from the small fishing community of Petersburg, has maintained that he’s a qualified candidate for US Senate and that election officials lacked a legal basis to boot him from the ballot.

The US Constitution lays out three exclusive qualifications for US Senate, addressing age, citizenship and residency, his attorneys wrote.

“Nothing in Alaska law regulates in any way the private motivations that draw individuals to declare or campaign for office,” the filing by attorneys Jeffrey Robinson, Bryn Pallesen and Zoe Eisberg states.

Sullivan’s entrance into the race, days before the June 1 filing deadline, drew condemnation from Sen. Sullivan and the National Republican Senatorial Committee. They called the challenger a sham candidate and alleged he was working with Democrats to boost Democratic former US Rep. Mary Peltola’s chances in the race. Peltola’s campaign and state Democrats have denied the allegation, as has the challenger.

Sen. Sullivan and Peltola are the highest-profile contenders in a race with more than a dozen candidates. It’s one of the most prominent US Senate races in this year’s midterm elections — one both parties consider crucial to their efforts to control the chamber.

Steve Kirch, a spokesperson for the election division, said the agency had no comment and does not discuss “ongoing reviews, investigations or related proceedings.” Beecher has previously noted that ballots are due to be printed Sunday.

On June 15, a week after Republican Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom announced an investigation into the challenger Sullivan’s run, Beecher disqualified him. She concluded that his declaration of candidacy “was not filed in order to declare an actual good-faith candidacy for the office of United States Senator, but was instead filed with a purpose to confuse or mislead and to thereby compromise the ballot’s fairness or neutrality.”

In announcing an investigation, Dahlstrom cited “credible allegations” that Sullivan declared his candidacy “in coordination with another candidate and campaign” with an intent to confuse and “manipulate” voters. But in removing the challenger from the ballot, Beecher did not mention finding any evidence of alleged coordination with Peltola or Democratic Party officials.

The challenger Sullivan, when asked in an interview with the Associated Press earlier this month whether he’d had any contact with Peltola’s campaign, responded: “zero, none, zilch.”

Beecher said she based her decision on factors including that he had registered to vote as Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. and in conjunction with his candidacy changed his party affiliation to Republican. She cited similarities between his campaign website and the senator’s, and his work with a consultant whose clients have included some Democrats.

The form congressional candidates in Alaska complete asks them how they would like to be referred to on the ballot and their preferred party affiliation.

Beecher said she acted in line with a regulation that says a candidate’s name may not appear on a ballot with academic or professional titles or “in a manner that is confusing or misleading to voters or compromises the fairness or neutrality of the ballot.”

In response to questions from Democratic state Rep. Andrew Gray, legislative attorney Andrew Dunmire last week said the regulation cited by Beecher does not forbid placing Sullivan’s name on the ballot. He said the elections division could comply with it by designing the ballot in a way that allows voters to distinguish between both Sullivans.

It’s a position echoed by the attorneys for the challenger Sullivan.

The challenger initially had been certified and listed on the state’s candidate list as Dan J. Sullivan. The senator was listed as Dan S. Sullivan and denoted as the incumbent.

Alaska has open primaries in which the top four vote-getters, regardless of party affiliation, advance to the ranked-choice general election.
