In 8 weeks, the Iran war has dented the U.S. economy. The damage could linger, economists say.

    April 24, 2026 / 4:27 PM EDT / CBS News

In the eight weeks since the Iran war started, the conflict has driven gas prices above $4 a gallon, strained homebuyers and pushed inflation to its highest level in nearly two years. Even if the war ends soon, Americans are likely to feel the financial sting for months, economists say.

“I think the damage has already been done, in part because there’s no going back on oil prices, at least not any time in the near future,” Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, told CBS News.

The war has disrupted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which one-fifth of the world’s oil supply normally flows. Oil prices have jumped as a result, creating widespread consequences for Americans as they fuel their cars and book travel. As of midday Friday, Brent crude, the international benchmark, was trading at $105 a barrel, up 44% since before the war started.

Oil production will take a long time to ramp up to prewar levels of 100 million barrels a day because of the widespread damage to energy facilities across the Middle East, Zandi said.

While economists forecast that oil prices will dip later this year, they are likely to remain above pre-war levels throughout 2026, according to multiple forecasts.

“Our view is that full normalization will still take time, especially when it comes to supply chains, when it comes to energy capacity,” said Lydia Boussour, a senior economist at EY-Parthenon, noting the “lingering impacts” of the war.

The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

To be sure, the Iran war isn’t the only factor creating headwinds for the U.S. economy. Artificial intelligence is also reshaping the labor market, with companies including Meta and Microsoft announcing major job cuts this week. Uncertainty and higher costs tied to the Trump administration’s tariff policies also persist, as it has pledged to pursue additional import duties after the Supreme Court struck down its “liberation day” tariffs.

    Inflation expected to run hot

Economists told CBS News they expect inflation to come in hot in April and remain elevated throughout 2026. Last month, the Consumer Price Index reached 3.3% on an annual basis, the highest level since May 2024, driven by a jump in energy prices.

Another key inflation gauge, the Personal Consumption Expenditures price Index, could hit 4% by the end of the year, double the Federal Reserve’s target rate of 2%, according to Scott Lincicome, vice president of general economics at the Cato Institute, a nonpartisan think tank. The measure rose by 2.8% on an annual basis in February.

“Consumers, of course, want deflation, and we’re definitely not getting that,” he said. “We should expect things to remain higher than what people want.”

The financial pinch from higher energy prices could prompt consumers to pull back, potentially creating a headwind for GDP growth because about 70 cents of every $1 of GDP stems from consumer spending.

EY-Parthenon chief economist Gregory Daco projects the war could drag GDP down by 0.3 percentage points this year, with GDP growing by 1.8% for the year. That represents a slowdown from the 2.1% pace recorded in 2025.

Cutbacks from consumers are “really the key channel through which we’re expecting the drag on economic activity to materialize,” said Boussour, also with EY-Parthenon, adding that a softer labor market and weak wage growth could also erode purchasing power.

Spending has remained resilient since the war started, although Bank of America data shows most of the growth is being driven by higher-income households. These consumers tend to have more money invested in the stock market, which has continued to hit new records despite the economic drag from the Iran war.

    Hitting Americans where it hurts

For many Americans, the biggest impact of the Iran war may be at the gas station, where average prices are up over $1 per gallon since the conflict started due to the global oil supply shortage. As of Friday, the average cost for a gallon of gas in the U.S. was $4.06, according to AAA.

Zandi said under the most optimistic scenarios, gas could settle closer to $3.50 a gallon by the end of the year. While that could offer some relief to motorists, it’s still above the pre-war level of $2.98.

Summer travel is also growing more expensive as a result of the Iran war, as airlines hike ticket prices and introduce bag fees to help offset the cost of jet fuel, which is up more than $2 a gallon as of earlier this month.

While much of the economic pain so far has been concentrated in travel, economists say Americans could soon feel the strain in other parts of their lives as higher diesel prices increase the cost to transport goods, pushing up grocery costs and prices of other items.

“Anything that’s put on a truck is going to cost more,” Zandi said. “That goes from groceries to Amazon packages.”

Disruptions to fertilizer production and supply could put pressure on food prices, economists say. Fertilizer is produced using natural gas, which has been constrained due to the war. In a report released Friday, the International Energy Agency predicted that the conflict in the Middle East will keep global natural gas supplies tight for two years.

“Wholesalers and distributors and retailers can each absorb some of the hit,” Lincicome said, speaking about supply chain disruptions caused by the war. “So it might not be a full pass through to consumers, but it’s going to be some.”

Ben Sasse was given a few months to live. He credits “providence, prayer and a miracle drug” for giving him more time.

    April 24, 2026 / 6:02 PM EDT / CBS News

Ben Sasse is “on extended time.” The former Republican U.S. senator from Nebraska was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic pancreatic cancer in December and was told he had three or four months to live.

He credits “providence, prayer and a miracle drug” — a clinical trial that has shrunk his tumors by 76% — for buying him more time. Patients who typically would have had about six months to live are living around 13 months with Revolution Medicines’ daraxonrasib.

Sasse talked at length about his diagnosis, his family and his faith in an interview with Scott Pelley, airing Sunday on “60 Minutes.” You can watch even more of their conversation in a special edition of “Things That Matter,” which will be available Sunday night on Paramount+, CBSNews.com, and YouTube.

The former senator also had plenty to say about the state of American politics, and Congress in particular.

“Neither of these parties really have very big or good ideas about 2030 or 2050,” he said. “The Congress is not wrestling with bigger important questions right now.”

WASHINGTON, April 24 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration is considering using the Defense Production Act as the legal basis to bail out Spirit Airlines, a source told Reuters.

CBS News first reported the ‌potential plan on Friday, citing U.S. officials familiar with the discussions.

The Reuters Iran Briefing newsletter keeps you informed with the latest developments and analysis of the Iran war. Sign up here.

The source said the government could invoke Title 3 of the Defense Production Act that allows the U.S. government to invest in industrial capacity to ensure supply chains for national defense.

The Trump administration “continues exploring possible options to ensure the airline remains in operation for its passengers and employees,” White House spokesman Kush Desai said.

He added reporting about the mechanism or structure of the financing should be regarded as speculation.

The Defense Production Act is an emergency authority that allows the U.S. government to require private companies to prioritize federal contracts and boost output of critical goods. It also permits loans to private firms for national defense purposes, a measure that may offer support to the airline.

Trump said on Thursday his administration was looking at buying the embattled airline at the “right price.”

“When the price of oil goes down, we would sell ‌it for a profit,” he told reporters at the White House.

The Florida-based budget carrier is running short on time. A lawyer for Spirit said on Thursday it needs new financing or access to its cash by the end of next week, and a court hearing is set for next week as lawyers for the company and creditors aim to reach agreement on a bankruptcy exit plan.

The Trump administration has made a financing offer to help the airline exit bankruptcy that was being reviewed by its major creditors, an outside lawyer for Spirit said on Thursday.

A lawyer for Spirit creditors said on Thursday they had reviewed a term sheet of the government’s offer that sources say includes $500 million in financing and a condition the government receive warrants equal to 90% of Spirit’s equity.

The senior debtor-in-possession financing would help Spirit exit its second bankruptcy restructuring since 2025.

Mamdani in the hot seat after first veto derails bipartisan effort to combat antisemitism: ‘Disappointed’

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is sparking backlash after using his first veto to derail a bipartisan bill aimed at combating antisemitism by expanding protest security safeguards for places of education.

“This could impact workers protesting ICE, or college students demanding their school divest from fossil fuels or demonstrating in support of Palestinian rights,” Mamdani said in a statement on Friday.

“It is a piece of legislation that has alarmed much of the labor movement, reproductive rights groups and immigration advocates, among others, across this city,” he continued.

New York’s former Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent against Mamdani in the mayoral race last year, slammed Mamdani’s decision, saying he “chose the whims of his radical, extreme-left DSA base over the safety of students and Jewish New Yorkers at a time of rising antisemitism.”

“Instead of governing for all NYers, Mamdani has repealed the very definition of antisemitism from the city’s books, changed how antisemitic crimes are counted and now vetoed these commonsense security measures when they are needed most,” Cuomo continued. “I proudly stand shoulder to shoulder with my Jewish brothers and sisters — just as the Cuomos always have, and always will.”

The bill, Int. 175-B, requires New York law enforcement to develop a plan to contain the risk of physical obstruction, physical injury, intimidation and interference at educational facilities while still allowing for freedom of assembly and First-Amendment events. The plan would then apply to “any building, structure, or place where educational programming takes place.”

Julie Menin, the speaker of the New York City Council, had framed the bill as key to warding off threats of antisemitism.

“The legislation is part of the Council-led Five-Point Action Plan to Combat Antisemitism,” Menin had said in March.

“According to the NYPD, antisemitic incidents accounted for 57% of reported hate crimes in 2025, although only approximately 10% of New York City residents are Jewish. Jewish New Yorkers were the targets of hate crimes more than all other groups combined.”

The bill passed the New York City Council by a 30-19 vote late last month.

Commentators online criticized the veto, citing a need for enhanced protections.

“We are deeply disappointed by Mayor Mamdani’s veto of legislation designed to help protect students from intimidation and disruption outside schools. The right to protest and the right to an education can and must coexist. We urge the City Council to override this veto and reaffirm a basic principle: protecting students is not politics; it is a civic responsibility,” the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a pro-Jewish group, said in a post to X.

“Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D- HAMAS) vetoed a bill for buffer zones around schools because it ‘could impact workers protesting ICE, or college students demanding their school divest from fossil fuels, or demonstrating in support of Palestinian rights.’ All the bill would have done was require clear safety plans around schools with law enforcement,” Ari Hoffman, a political commentator, wrote in his own post.

Notably, Mamdani approved a very similar bill that applied to religious sites. He explained that he was concerned by expansive range of what the second bill meant by “educational facilities.”

“The problem is how widely this bill defines an educational institution and the constitutional concerns it raises regarding New Yorkers’ fundamental right to protest. As the bill is written, everywhere from universities to museums to teaching hospitals could face restrictions,” Mamdani said in a statement.

The City Council could override a mayoral veto with a two-thirds vote, according toNew York City’s charter.Doing so would require 33 of the chamber’s 50 members.

Assuming the bill retains the support of the legislators that originally advanced it out of the council, it would require just three more votes to secure its implementation over Mamdani’s objection.

Transgender lawmaker ‘doesn’t know what a woman is,’ White House says after dig at Trump firings

    April 24, 2026 6:08pm EDT / Fox News

The White House brushed aside remarks made by Rep. Sarah McBride, D-Del., to a reporter alleging that Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard would be the next Cabinet official to leave the administration because President Donald Trump “only fires women.”

“Rep. McBride doesn’t know what a woman is,” White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers said of McBride, a biological male who identifies as a woman.

McBride speculated to MeidasTouch reporter Pablo Manríquez that Tulsi Gabbard will be the next Cabinet member on President Donald Trump’s chopping block. In separate interviews, Manríquez asked McBride and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., who they believed would be next to be fired. Both said it would not be a man.

TRUMP FIRES TWO DEMOCRATIC COMMISSIONERS ON CIVIL RIGHTS ENFORCEMENT AGENCY AS WHITE HOUSE TARGETS DEI

The remarks come amid a shakeup in the Trump administration after Trump announced the dismissal of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Attorney General Pam Bondi within a span of four weeks.

On Monday, Department of Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer resigned amid allegations of misconduct toward staffers.

“All of them deserve to be fired,” McBride quipped. “I’m supporting impeachment of Pete Hegseth because, obviously right now, we are engaged in a reckless war of choice that he was a primary driver of.

“But we know this president,” McBride added. “He only fires women, so my guess is Tulsi Gabbard.”

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., echoed McBride’s sentiment when asked the same question by Manríquez.

“Is he out of women?” Ocasio-Cortez asked. “Because that seems to be his pattern right now.”

She went on to say that Trump “seems to only have the capability to fire female secretaries.”

In response to a follow-up question about the “clownish behavior” of War Secretary Pete Hegseth and FBI Director Kash Patel, Ocasio-Cortez claimed that what Patel has done is “a thousand times worse” than what other officials have done.

Neither Manríquez nor Ocasio-Cortez gave specific examples of misconduct by either man. Patel has filed a $250 million defamation lawsuit against The Atlantic over reported allegations that he is a heavy drinker and that it affects his work.

Hegseth faced sexual assault and drinking allegations during his confirmation hearings, which he denied, and his tenure at the War Department was rocked by two separate Signal chat leaks in which information about military airstrikes were inadvertently shared with a journalist.

While the White House has stood by Hegseth, Democratic lawmakers have demanded his resignation and criticized his handling of the war with Iran.

“If you’re a man in the Trump administration, it seems that they reward misconduct,” Ocasio-Cortez said.

Drug-making giant Johnson & Johnson will officially start marketing four of its medications on the Trump administration’s TrumpRx website on Friday, CBS News exclusively learned.

The pharmaceutical company announced in January that it had entered into a voluntary agreement with the Trump administration to lower costs for Americans by providing Medicaid access to affordable prescriptions and marketing its drugs on TrumpRx in exchange for exemption from the president’s tariff agenda.

One of the drugs offered on White House’s discounted pharmaceutical site is metformin, a popular prescription to treat Type 2 diabetes. The others are metformin extended relief; Invokana, another diabetes medication; and Xarelto, a blood thinner.

Johnson & Johnson previously agreed to invest $55 billion in research and production sites in Pennsylvania and North Carolina.

The addition of Johnson & Johnson pharmaceuticals to the TrumpRx site means the administration has more than doubled the number of drugs featured on the low-cost site since it first launched in February.

The prescription drug prices on the site, however, are only available to patients who are uninsured, or whose insurance doesn’t cover it, and who must pay the full list price out of pocket. Those with insurance coverage generally pay lower prices already.

Trump extends Jones Act waiver for another 90 days

    April 24, 2026 / 4:22 PM EDT / CBS News

    By Megan Cerullo

President Trump is extending a waiver of the Jones Act for another 90 days in a bid to lower fuel prices as the war in Iran stretches into its second month, White House press secretary Taylor Rogers said in a statement on X on Friday.

The law requires that goods shipped between U.S. ports be carried on vessels that are U.S.-built, -flagged and -crewed. Mr. Trump initially waived the act on March 18 for 60 days to ease energy prices as the war cut off one-fifth of the world’s oil supply, causing energy costs to soar.

The extension will begin at 12 am ET on May 18, the White House confirmed to CBS News.

“New data compiled since the initial waiver was issued revealed that significantly more supply was able to reach U.S. ports faster,” Rogers said on X. “This waiver extension provides both certainty and stability for the U.S. and global economies. The Trump Administration has taken several actions to mitigate short-term disruptions to the energy markets, and this extension will help ensure vital energy products, industrial materials and agricultural necessities are maintained.”

The White House added that more than 40 tankers have used, or will use, the Jones Act waiver, increasing the availability of transporting goods between U.S. ports by more than 70%. It has enabled more than 9 million barrels of U.S. oil to reach domestic ports, the White House added.

Pros and cons of the waiver

Some experts support the waiver and extension, describing the law as outdated and contributing to higher shipping costs. Colin Grabow, associate director at the Herbert A. Stiefel Center for Trade Policy Studies at Cato Institute, a libertarian think tank, told CBS News the extension of the waiver suggests that “the administration thinks it’s working and producing benefits to the country.”

“Waiving the law increases the number of ships available,” he said. By contrast, when the law is in effect, it becomes much costlier to transport goods between U.S. ports.

The American Offshore Maritime Association on Friday, by contrast, said the waiver undermines the domestic shipping industry while failing to deliver benefits to consumers.

“The initial waiver has not reduced gasoline prices, rather prices have increased in every U.S. market while benefiting NATO countries that have refused to support U.S. military operations,” Aaron Smith, president of OMSA, said in a statement. “To put it simply, a waiver extension sells out our American maritime industry and the foundation of our Navy to benefit oil traders and foreign shippers. Now is the time we should strengthen U.S. maritime capacity, not weaken it.”

The waiver is one of a number of steps the Trump administration has taken to try to tame energy prices as the Iran war chokes oil supplies and boosts domestic energy costs.

Mr. Trump in March ordered that 172 million barrels of oil be released from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve. That same month, the U.S. also temporarily lifted sanctions on the purchase of Russian oil. But experts say reopening the Strait of Hormuz to tanker traffic is essential to keeping a lid on oil prices, with shipping traffic through the Strait remaining well below prewar levels.
