    2026-06-24T16:05:01.082Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/24/politics/medical-records-minors-transgender-langone-new-york

Judge blocks Trump admin. from getting medical records of minors who received gender identity care at NYC hospitals

    2026-06-24T16:05:01.082Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/24/politics/medical-records-minors-transgender-langone-new-york

A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from obtaining sensitive medical records from healthcare institutions in New York City that provided gender identity care to minors in recent years.

The ruling from US District Judge Katherine Polk Failla is a significant blow to the administration’s ongoing nationwide criminal investigation into the provision of gender identity care, which numerous courts around the country have described as an improper fishing expedition because the government has struggled to identify potential crimes by providers.

Ruling from the bench on Wednesday, Failla, an appointee of former President Barack Obama, provisionally certified a class comprised of individuals who had received care from a New York City provider over the past six years. She also issued a temporary restraining order that bars investigators from obtaining the records, including through a grand jury subpoena that had been issued to NYU Langone Hospitals in recent weeks.

“The scope of information sought by the government here, which includes medical assessments, diagnoses, informed consent records, and revelation of plaintiffs’ transgender status, is significant,” she said, adding that that type of information is “squarely within the class of intimate materials warranting the strongest constitutional protection.”

“Because I cannot conceive of a crime that would require the breadth of disclosures in the subpoena – identifying and sensitive medical information for an entire class of people for a six-year period – I have to find that the government’s interest does not outweigh the plaintiffs’ interest in privacy,” Failla said.

In siding against the administration, the judge pointed to statements made by Justice Department attorneys to her a day earlier that appeared to leave open the possibility that prosecutors may use the records to criminally pursue patients or their parents.

“I’m hard pressed for reasons to rely on the government’s representations that even the patients would not be prosecuted, especially given the inability to comment on any aspect of the alleged investigation or the subpoena,” she said.

Failla is now among a growing group of judges who have sounded the alarm on the Trump administration’s probe and its investigatory tactics.

In ruling after ruling over the past year, judges appointed by presidents from both parties have criticized the probe as an effort aimed not at prosecuting a legitimate crime but rather a bid to pressure institutions to stop providing the care, which is not illegal at the federal level but has been heavily restricted in GOP-led states. Those judges had blocked administrative subpoenas that were issued to providers around the country.

In the case at hand, parents of several children who received the treatments in New York City asked Failla to stop the records from being turned over because they feared the information’s disclosure could expose them to retaliation by the Trump administration.

The subpoena issued to NYU through a federal grand jury in Texas asked the hospital to turn over documents “sufficient to identify every patient who underwent sex-rejecting procedures” and all the records related to those individuals “from initial consultation to the most recent treatment provided.” It also compelled the hospital to produce records pertaining to authorizations from parents for their minor children to receive such care.

The hospital revealed in early May that it had been hit with the subpoena and the class action lawsuit was brought nearly a month later. NYU stopped providing gender identity care for minors earlier this year after the Trump administration threatened to pull federal funding from the hospital. Other hospitals have also ended their programs in the face of pressure from Washington.

Failla pointed to those rulings on Wednesday, saying prosecutors were clearly attempting to get around the adverse rulings by now using grand jury subpoenas, which are generally more difficult to block in court.

“Undeterred by its disastrous showing in the courts, DOJ decided to issue nearly identical document requests in the form of grand jury subpoenas,” she said, going on to criticize the government’s “efforts to recast discredited civil administrative subpoenas as grand jury subpoenas from a hand-picked, far-away jurisdiction in order to minimize judicial review of constitutional infirmities.”

Chase Strangio, an American Civil Liberties Union attorney who represents the plaintiffs in the case, said they’re “thankful the court has granted our emergency request to protect the privacy interests of transgender New Yorkers and their families.”

“Patients and families trust their doctors with their most intimate, private information and should trust in turn that this information will be protected from impermissible and harassing demands for disclosure from the federal government or anyone else,” Strangio said in a statement. The plaintiffs are also represented by the LGBTQ rights group Lambda Legal and the New York Civil Liberties Union.

Through court filings and proceedings, the Justice Department has said that, among other things, it’s looking at whether providers have unlawfully pushed off-label use of drugs for cross-sex hormone therapy and to delay puberty in trans minors. Prosecutors are also probing whether possible fraudulent billing practices have occurred where the treatments have been provided.

The temporary restraining order issued by Failia will remain in effect while more court proceedings play out.

Her ruling comes on the heels of a separate decision by a judge in Minnesota that was also highly critical of the administration’s use of its prosecutorial powers. In that case, Judge Patrick Schiltz found that subpoenas issued to the state’s Democratic governor and other officials were retaliatory in nature and served only to harass them for their opposition to President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown in the Twin Cities.

At least one other hospital has said publicly that it has also received a grand jury subpoena from prosecutors in Texas conducting the investigation into gender identity care: Stanford University’s Lucile Salter Packard Children’s Hospital. Several patients who received care from that hospital are similarly seeking a court order that would prevent their records from being turned over to officials.

EXCLUSIVE: Hawley pushes new legislation to save rural emergency rooms from ‘breakneck’ closures

Nearly 200 rural hospitals have shut down nationwide since 2005, creating widespread emergency room deserts

FIRST ON FOX: Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., on Wednesday introduced new legislation aimed at combating America’s rural healthcare crisis, telling Fox News Digital that Congress must intervene to keep rural emergency rooms open.

“Americans in rural communities across the country are confronted with a concerning shortage of access to emergency medical care,” Hawley said. “In Missouri alone, 12 rural hospitals with emergency rooms have closed in as many years, and those that remain open are struggling to keep the lights on.

“Congress must act swiftly to protect the necessary emergency care hardworking rural families deserve.”

Hawley’s comments come as he pushes the Rural Hospital Emergency Room Guarantee Act, legislation aimed at saving rural hospitals from closing at a “breakneck pace.”

‘IT JUST BAFFLES ME’: SENATE REPUBLICANS SOUND ALARM OVER MEDICAID CHANGES, SPENDING IN TRUMP MEGABILL

Since 2005, nearly 200 rural hospitals have shut down nationwide, a trend that is creating “widespread emergency-room deserts” and forcing some residents to drive an hour or more just to reach lifesaving emergency care, according to the senator’s office.

The situation is particularly dire in Hawley’s home state of Missouri, where 12 rural hospitals with emergency rooms have closed since 2014.

Records show that nearly half of all rural hospitals in Missouri currently operate at a loss, with 10 hospitals, or roughly 20%, at “immediate risk of closure.”

SENATE REPUBLICANS LOOK TO SWEETEN MEDICAID POT TO SILENCE DISSENT ON TRUMP’S ‘BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL’

To keep the lights on and emergency room doors open, the proposed legislation would establish a mandatory, 10-year dedicated funding stream administered by the Health Resources and Services Administration, according to the senator’s office.

If the bill were to pass, eligible rural hospitals would receive a guaranteed baseline distribution of $1 million per year to cover normal emergency room operating expenses, which would be distributed on a quarterly basis and indexed for inflation, along with additional funding depending on a hospital’s specific geographical, financial and patient-injury characteristics.

Participating rural hospitals facing an immediate risk of closure would also receive a one-time emergency payment of up to $250,000.

The senator’s office noted affected hospitals receiving the new guaranteed funding will not face negative impacts on their eligibility for any other federal healthcare programs, designations or grants.

Hawley is expected to announce the Rural Hospital Emergency Room Guarantee Act at a news conference scheduled for 3 p.m. ET Wednesday.

    • Michigan judge had blocked DOJ’s demand for unredacted voter rolls
    • Trump administration has sued dozens of states seeking lists of voters
    • Voting rights advocates say naturalized citizens could be disenfranchised

June 24 (Reuters) – A U.S. appeals court on Wednesday upheld a court order blocking the Justice Department from obtaining Michigan’s voter rolls, dealing a blow to the Trump administration’s push ‌to boost the federal government’s role in elections.

The decision from the Cincinnati-based 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals comes as President Donald Trump’s Republicans are locked in a tight battle to maintain control of both houses of Congress in the November 3 midterm elections.

The U.S. Constitution assigns individual states the responsibility of administering federal elections, though the federal government has some oversight authority. Trump, who maintains his false claim that his 2020 election loss was due to fraud, has long asserted that states are not doing enough to prevent ineligible people from casting ballots. He has said Republicans should “nationalize” and “take over” voting.

    STATES CITE VOTERS’ PRIVACY RIGHTS

Starting last year, the Justice Department sent letters to election officials in nearly all 50 states seeking access to their voter lists, including sensitive identifying information like partial social security numbers, driver’s license numbers and dates of birth.

    Advertisement · Scroll to continue

At least 17 Republican-led states voluntarily shared the data. Dozens more states, including several led by Republicans, have resisted, in many cases arguing that sharing the information would violate their citizens’ privacy rights.

The Justice Department has sued 30 states and the District of Columbia to try to force them to turn over their rolls, arguing it needs the unredacted lists to determine whether the states are doing enough to remove ‌ineligible voters from their rolls.

The Justice Department has so far lost each case that has been decided at the trial court level.

    DOJ CITED CIVIL RIGHTS ACT

In the Michigan case, U.S. District Judge Hala Jarbou said the voter rolls were not among the documents that the federal government had the right to demand from states under the Civil Rights Act of 1960. The law, passed to combat racial discrimination at a time when Southern states were destroying Black Americans’ voter registration records to cover up disenfranchisement, requires states to preserve such records.

In appealing the case, the Justice Department called Jarbou’s reading of the law “novel and incorrect.”

Lawyers for Michigan said Jarbou correctly distinguished between materials voters submit to the state, which they said the federal government may demand, and records like voter rolls created by the state itself, which they said were not covered by the Civil Rights Act.

Jarbou was appointed by Trump during his first term.

Voting rights activists have expressed concern that the Trump administration is seeking to compare states’ voter rolls with other sources of data to purge people it believes are not citizens. They say that risks disenfranchising some voters because those data sources may not have up-to-date information on whether previously ineligible immigrants have since become naturalized citizens.

    Inside Politics

Morris Katz, a top adviser to Mayor Zohran Mamdani, joins Dana Bash after three Mamdani-backed challengers won Democratic House primaries on Tuesday. Asked if the democratic socialist label hurts candidates outside of New York City, Katz said, “candidates and voters have the right to call it by whatever name they seek. But what people are looking for is a different kind of politics.”

Live Nation’s chief executive spoke with President Donald Trump less than a month before the ticketing and events giant reached a surprise antitrust settlement with the Justice Department that consumer advocate groups have largely panned.

The highly-unusual conversation between Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino and the president was disclosed in a court filing on Monday. The disclosure also reveals that the White House counsel’s office was involved in finalizing the settlement.

“In February 2026, Mr. Rapino discussed a variety of topics related to Live Nation’s business with President Donald J. Trump; the status of DOJ’s lawsuit against Defendants came up but no substantive terms regarding any potential settlement were discussed,” Live Nation disclosed in a court filing.

The filing raises questions about whether Trump was personally behind the settlement and how closely he is involved in Justice Department decision-making.

CNN has reached out to Live Nation, the Justice Department and White House for comment.

The conversation took place just weeks before the landmark antitrust trial began and the same month senior Justice Department leadership pushed out Gail Slater, the head of the Justice Department’s antitrust division. Slater was known to advocate for aggressive approaches to the antitrust cases she oversaw

On March 5, representatives of Live Nation, the antitrust division, the attorney general’s office, deputy attorney general’s office and White House counsel’s office met to finalize the settlement, and hammered out a term sheet signed that day, according to the court filing.

The Live Nation settlement with DOJ was announced during the second week of the trial and blindsided the judge overseeing the case as well as the Justice Department trial team handling the case before the jury.

Judge Arun Subramanian summoned Rapino and the head of the antitrust division to court for a testy hearing. During the hearing, the judge said it was “mind boggling” that DOJ attorneys did not know about deal.

The trial resumed with more than 30 state attorneys general moving forward. The jury found Live Nation acted as a monopoly and overcharged fans.

After the verdict was announced, Slater wrote on X, “You made antitrust history today. You fought the good fight, you finished the race, and you kept the faith.”

The judge will ultimately decide whether to approve the DOJ settlement and assign remedies or damages in light of the verdict.

Remarkable photos show ancient human burials uncovered in Egypt, with clues to centuries of changing tradition

    2026-06-24T12:57:00-0400 / CBS News

Cairo — Egyptian archaeologists say they’ve uncovered remains and a myriad of artifacts in part of a Greco-Roman cemetery that dates back more than 2,300 years, revealing the evolution of funerary practices over some six centuries and showing the importance of the site itself.

Burials discovered at the Tell Kom Aziza site, in the Nile Delta in Egypt’s northern Beheira province, near the Mediterranean coast, date from about 332 B.C. to 395 A.D. Remains and artifacts found at the site show widely varying burial practices and they point to the site itself morphing over its long period of use from a settlement into a cemetery.

“This is a very important discovery because it sheds light on and reveals more details about the site,” Nevine El-Aref, media adviser to the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, told CBS News. “It is a unique example that shows the transformation of a settlement hub into a major burial ground spanning different ancient eras.”

Burials discovered at the Tell Kom Aziza burial site in Egypt’s Nile Delta range from simple pits to graves lined with mudbricks to painted plaster coffins. Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities

Excavations revealed burial practices ranging from simple pit burials, with bodies placed directly in the ground, to graves lined with mudbricks and burials in painted plaster coffins.

There were also individual and collective burials, according to Dr. Hisham El-Leithy, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, and burials oriented along both north–south and east–west axes.

The hand positions of those interred also differed. Some individuals were buried with their hands folded or crossed over the pelvic region, while others were put in the “Osirian pose,” with their arms crossed over the chest, or with their arms extended and aligned alongside the thighs, El-Leithy said.

“This diversity can be interpreted in several ways: It may reflect social differences among the individuals buried, variations in ritual practices, or a limited development within the same funerary tradition,” Khaled Abdel Ghany Farhat, the head of the team, told CBS News.

Among the significant discoveries were the complete skeletal remains of two wild boars, a rare find at ancient Egyptian funerary sites. Boars were representative at the time with Seth (or Set), a deity associated with chaos and violence in ancient Egyptian mythology.

“Even though it’s not possible yet to determine with certainty whether these remains represent intentional animal burials, remnants of domestic and economic activity, or an element with ritual significance, their presence within this context requires linking the direct archaeological evidence with the cultural and religious significance of the boar in ancient Egypt,” Mohamed Abdel Badi, Head of the Egyptian Antiquities Sector, told CBS News.

Pottery fragments dating from the Egyptian Old Kingdom — the time of the great pyramids’ construction, between around 2686 and 2181 B.C. — to the Greco-Roman period that followed some 2,000 years later, were also discovered at the site.

The largely domestic items, including amphorae, burial jars, bread molds and bread trays, indicate continued or repeated use of the site over not just centuries, but millenia.

“Excavation work at the site is still ongoing in order to uncover more secrets, understand the history of the location and its development over time, and put all the puzzle pieces together to decipher patterns of human activity in the area,” El-Aref, at the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, told CBS News.

Experts urge extreme caution on Iran’s ‘crown jewel’ Hezbollah — terror group with US blood on its hands

    June 24, 2026 3:36pm EDT / Fox News

Sen Sheehy warns of Iran’s ‘murderous regime’ as nuclear deal sparks debate

Sen. Tim Sheehy, R-Mont., reacts to the latest Iran nuclear peace talks, warning that the Iranian regime is merely buying time. He highlights Iran’s stated goal to ‘wipe our civilization off the map’ and its decades-long funding of terrorist organizations like Hezbollah and Hamas. He stresses the importance of supporting U.S. allies in the Middle East, including Israel and the UAE, against this global threat.

Foreign policy experts are advising the Trump administration to continue to carefully watch Iran’s behavior over its terror proxy Hezbollah— a group with American blood on its hands.

The importance of Hezbollah to the Tehran regime is clear in the comprehensive U.S.-Iran memorandum of understanding. While the agreement does not mention the group by name, clause one of the 14-point MOU calls for the permanent termination of military operations on all fronts, including the cessation of conflict in Lebanon.

Lisa Daftari, editor-in-chief, told Fox News Digital that, “Hezbollah isn’t just the Iran regime’s most prized proxy; it’s the crown jewel of the regime’s forward defense. For almost five decades, the Islamic Republic has invested billions building Hezbollah into a forward-deployed missile arsenal aimed directly at Israel’s heart.” She said “Losing Hezbollah would hurt the mullahs more than losing the Strait of Hormuz or anything else in their arsenal. That’s why Hezbollah is clause one,” of the MOU.

Daftari said Hezbollah is “a forward-deployed arm of the IRGC Quds Force taking Lebanon hostage,” She said that “the IRGC created Hezbollah in 1982, trained it, armed it, funded it, and to this day embeds Quds Force commanders inside its command structure. Treating them as separate organizations is a fiction Tehran exploits.”

While the State Department didn’t answer Fox News Digital questions over concerns raised by critics regarding the administration’s handling of Hezbollah, Secretary of State Marco Rubio took a tough line on the terror group when asked by reporters in the United Arab Emirates Tuesday about Tehran’s terror proxies and why Iran’s ballistic missile program was left out of the recent Islamabad memorandum of understanding (MOU).

Rubio insisted that regional proxy threats are fundamentally covered by the framework. “I think a careful reading of the MOU will see that when you talk about, for example, a complete – an end of hostilities in the entire region, well, that’s not possible. You can’t have the end of hostilities and conflicts in the region as long as Iranian proxies are launching missiles and drones from Iraq and are participating in terrorism like Hamas did and like Hezbollah did.So I do think it’s covered by the MOU, and it is an issue that will be gotten to at the appropriate time in these negotiations.”

Hezbollah was designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by the U.S. in 1997. Bill Roggio, senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense for Democracies (FDD) and editor of its Long War Journal, told Fox News Digital that “Hezbollah has a five-decade-long track record of killing Americans, starting with the Marine barracks bombing in Beirut in 1983, attacks on U.S. embassies and airplane hijackings.”

Roggio said the efforts “continue to this day,” with Hezbollah playing “a key role in establishing, training, advising and supporting the Iraqi militias, which are responsible for killing more than 600 American soldiers. Hezbollah also trained al Qaeda to use suicide car bombs, which it implemented in the 1998 suicide attacks on the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania and perfected in theaters such as Iraq, Afghanistan and Somalia.”

In May 2025, A U.S. District Court determined that the torture of Lebanese American Amer Fakhoury was the responsibility of Iran, through its proxy Hezbollah. Fakhoury lost sixty pounds during a six-month period of captivity after being kidnapped by Hezbollah in Lebanon in September 2019. He died six months after his return to the U.S. of cancer that was diagnosed in prison in Lebanon.

Zoya and Guila Fakhoury, Amer’s daughters and co-founders of the Amer Foundation, told Fox News Digital that their “family wants to see a peaceful, sovereign, and prosperous Lebanon” and welcomes “any effort that genuinely reduces violence and helps Lebanon move toward stability.”

The Fakhoury’s said that “lasting peace cannot come at the expense of accountability. True stability in Lebanon requires ensuring that terrorist organizations like Hezbollah no longer hold the power to intimidate, detain, and silence innocent people.”

They expressed disappointment that there has been “little public focus on the Americans who remain unjustly detained by the Iranian regime.” They added that “Any meaningful agreement with Iran should include concrete progress toward bringing every wrongfully detained American home.”

A U.S. official told Fox News Digital that “The Trump Administration is committed to securing the release of all Americans unjustly detained in Iran and around the world. The Iranian regime has a long and shameful history of unjustly detaining U.S. nationals and other foreign citizens. The Iranian regime should immediately release all Americans unjustly detained in Iran.To ensure the safety and security and security of those Americans, we have nothing further to share at this time.”

As talks brokered by the U.S. between Lebanese and Israeli officials resumed in Washington, the Lebanese president, Joseph Aoun, released a statement on his X account Tuesday, thanking the Vice President and Secretary of State, stating in part “for the attention that the United States is showing toward Lebanon, aimed at ending the war there, strengthening the authority of the Lebanese state, and the independence of its decision-making, considering it solely responsible for preserving national sovereignty, the dignity of the Lebanese people, and their safety.”

Walid Phares, a foreign policy expert and author of ‘Iran: An Imperialist Republic and U.S. Policy,’ told Fox News Digital that it was “a major mistake…to give the Islamic regime in Iran a power to include Lebanon and Hezbollah in the talks. He warned that “putting Lebanon on the agenda of the talks with the regime in Switzerland could collapse the Washington, D.C. platform.”

Pressed by reporters while in Kuwait on Wednesday about Israel’s continued military presence, Rubio drew a firm line on the administration’s expectations, stating its hope is “that the Lebanese Armed Forces and the legitimate, sovereign Lebanese government will continue to be able to control and secure more and more of their own territory, because that’s who needs to control Lebanese territory… not a terrorist group like Hezbollah. So that’s the goal. And I think the Israelis have been clear. They don’t have any quarrels with the Lebanese people, and they don’t have any claims on the territory of Lebanon.”

Jonathan Conricus, a former international spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces, told Fox News Digital that “From an Israeli perspective, Hezbollah is not an organization that we can talk with or expect them to change their ways.” He said that as a jihadi organization, “their primary objective in life is to wage holy war against the Jews, and then against Christians and against other what they consider to be infidels and Westerners. These are not people that you can negotiate or talk sense with.”

Conricus, a senior fellow at the FDD, added that “there’s a unique chance here to roll back Iranian aggression in the region and to dismantle the most important Iranian proxy Hezbollah.” To do so, he called for “political pressure, information pressure and…economic pressure on Hezbollah [and] on all of its financial institutions.”

A U.S. government official told Fox News Digital that “Secretary Rubio spoke to both Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Aoun on Friday about solidifying ceasefire and future talks. As a result of those calls, the U.S. started a monitoring mechanism via U.S. Central Command so that our policymakers have real-time and accurate information about fighting in Lebanon.”

The Washington talks between Lebanon and Israel are expected to continue into Thursday.

TV host apologizes after she criticized soccer star for leaving World Cup for birth of his son: “The dad is useless”

    June 24, 2026 2:49 PM EDT / CBS/AP

A well-known French TV host has apologized after she criticized a soccer star’s decision to leave the World Cup to attend the birth of his first child.

The controversy started after Belgium forward Jérémy Doku announced that he planned to fly to London so he could be with his wife for the birth of their baby. Doku’s absence prompted a French commentator, France Pierron, to criticize the player’s intention to leave the World Cup.

She described childbirth as “a disgusting moment, excuse me, where the dad is useless” during an appearance on the television show “L’Equipe de Choc” on Friday. The comments drew widespread backlash and prompted an apology from Pierron on Tuesday.

“These remarks are solely my own and in no way reflect a collective position,” she posted on X. “I understand that they may have shocked, offended, or hurt some of you, and I am sorry for that.”

Her employer, French sports daily L’Equipe, disavowed the comments and also apologized to Doku in a statement late Sunday, saying the remarks did not represent its values.

Doku made it to London in time for the birth of his son, Praise. He posted on social media about his appreciation for the kind messages he and his family have received over the past few days.

“Shireen and Praise are doing great, and my heart is full of gratitude,” Doku said. “Welcoming my son into the world is one of the greatest blessings God has ever given me. Thank you to the team for the support, now it’s time to get back to football and represent my country on the biggest stage.”

On Monday, Belgium captain Youri Tielemans shared his support for Doku, and said he and other players congratulated him.

“I think having a child is the most beautiful thing in the world that you can have, and being there, it’s more than normal as a dad, as a mom, obviously,” Tielemans said. “But yeah, being there as a dad, for myself, I have three and it’s memories you can’t take back. So, yeah, very happy for him.”

Doku missed Belgium’s 0-0 World Cup draw against Iran on Sunday because of a respiratory illness, but was cleared to fly to London so he could be with his wife.

Belgium plays New Zealand on Friday at BC Place, a match that could determine whether the Red Devils advance into the knockout round. Belgium played to draws in each of its first two games.

Irate Republicans accuse Trump of handing Democrats a win after blowing up housing package

Sen Thom Tillis says Democrats ‘really appreciate’ Trump’s last-minute move as GOP frustration mounts

The Senate was left in a state of confusion and anger in the wake of President Donald Trump’s last-minute declaration that he would not sign into law a colossal housing package filled with his own priorities.

It comes as Trump is expected to have a closed-door lunch with Senate Republicans who are already frustrated with a laundry list of his recent decisions that have either derailed or blown up their attempts to move forward with his agenda.

Trump said he wouldn’t sign the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Package into law, which passed both chambers with overwhelming bipartisan support, unless Republicans ram through the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act, a voter-ID and citizenship verification package that doesn’t have the votes to succeed in the Senate.

“Today’s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency,” Trump said on Truth Social.

The sudden decision had some Republicans accusing Trump of handing Democrats a victory.

“There is a huge group of people who really appreciate what the president’s doing right now, and it’s the Democratic Party,” Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., said. “And we’ve got to get our act together and stop surprising people and start having … working messages.

“This housing bill was a very clear, bipartisan effort to address some of the basics of affordability, and we are here,” he continued. “It makes no sense.”

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., one of the chief architects of the housing package, was furious that Trump refused to sign the bill into law.

“Can I underline crisis three times? We have a bill that Republicans and Democrats have built. It is good for urban America, rural America, first-time homebuyers, renters, seniors, families that are expanding,” Warren said. “It’s a bill about doing good things. And Donald Trump says he just doesn’t care.”

Before torpedoing the housing package, Trump had already earned the frustration of Republicans with his decision to derail the process of reauthorizing the nation’s key counter-terrorism tool, the memorandum of understanding with Iran, and his push for an “anti-weaponization” fund that nearly blew up a $70 billion immigration enforcement package.

The GOP is hungry for a stream of wins to push on the campaign trail as they inch closer to midterm elections where several incumbent Republicans are running in tight races.

But for now, they are mired in debate over whether they can pass the SAVE America Act, which Trump is expected to push for during the lunch.

Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, described the situation as “inexplicable.”

“I mean, this, this is not — I don’t know if there is precedent for it,” Cornyn said.

When asked if Trump would be any more successful in generating the votes to pass the legislation, Cornyn acknowledged that the president had a lot of sway, but that if the solution was to eliminate the filibuster, the votes similarly weren’t there.

“At some point, we got to deal with reality,” he said.

Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., who worked on the housing package, agreed with Trump that Republicans should try to pass the SAVE America Act and explore all options to do so, like attaching it to a third budget reconciliation package or forcing debate on the floor.

But he acknowledged that the votes currently weren’t there to pass it.

“I will stand on one leg and bark like a dog if that’s what it takes to help this pass,” Kennedy said. “But you can’t make people vote in a way that they don’t want to do. I mean, that’s what we’re up against.”
