2028 hopeful fires back at Elon Musk after trillionaire threatened lawsuit: ‘Not going to be silenced’

Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., brushed aside threats of legal action from Elon Musk, the trillionaire founder of SpaceX and Tesla, on Thursday.

“This is what he does,” Khanna told Fox News Digital outside the U.S. Capitol.

“It’s symptomatic of our times that billionaires — and now [a] trillionaire — can threaten to sue members of Congress for doing their job. He won’t intimidate me. I’m not going to be intimidated by the guy. I’m not going to be silenced by the guy,” Khanna said.

Khanna’s comments come on the heels of an online back-and-forth between him and Musk over whether cuts to government aid programs overseas — cuts spearheaded by Musk in the early days of the second Trump administration — had led to fatalities.

In particular, Khanna, a high-profile progressive and a rumored candidate for president in 2028, had been criticizing Musk’s work to cut the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

“There needs to be accountability for Elon Musk. You know, they’re celebrating that he created 4,400 millionaires, but they don’t talk about the 4.5 million children around the world who he possibly sentenced to death by dismantling USAID,” Khanna said, in a recent podcast appearance, citing a study from the Lancet Group, a medical journal.

The assertion drew a fierce response from Musk, who personally oversaw efforts to trim waste, fraud and abuse from U.S. programs.

“Time to sue this liar,” Musk said in a post to X.

“Robber Khanna should be in prison,” Musk added in a separate reaction.

Musk, like many conservatives suspicious of government spending, criticized USAID for greenlighting millions in spending that, in their view, had little justification.

But while few Democrats defended programs for transgender comic books in Peru and Iraqi Sesame Street, critics of the cuts argued that Musk’s efforts had failed to differentiate between waste and life-saving initiatives around the globe.

By March of last year, USAID had cut roughly 83% of its programs, according to Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

It’s not immediately clear what kind of damages Musk would try to pursue in a lawsuit against Khanna for his claims.

When asked if he would go to court if Musk followed through on his posts, Khanna said he liked his odds.

“Grok says he doesn’t have a case, so we will have to see,” Khanna said, referring to the AI chatbot on X, a social media platform owned by Musk.

Catholic bishops call for humane treatment of migrants during US-Mexico border Mass

    • Summary
    • Procession follows US Supreme Court ruling affecting migrants
    • US bishops have said they are saddened by immigrant vilification
    • Pope Leo will mark July 4 on migration frontline in Lampedusa

NOGALES, Arizona, June 27 (Reuters) – More than 100 Catholic bishops, nuns, priests and parishioners joined a procession across the U.S.-Mexico border on Friday evening, urging the U.S. government to treat migrants with dignity and respect.

The procession, from Nogales, Arizona, to its sister city in the Mexican state of Sonora, was planned to coincide with commemorations of America’s 250th anniversary.

“We ‌want to be well together. This is what the Church is all about,” Tucson, Arizona, Bishop James Misko said as he celebrated Mass at the Sacred Heart Church in Nogales, which overlooks the U.S.-Mexico border fence.

    CATHOLIC LEADERS CRITICIZE IMMIGRATION POLICIES

After the service concluded, the clergy and parishioners lined up and started praying the rosary together as they walked across the border, where they were joined by their Mexican counterparts.

“The heat is terrible, the heat is actually deadly,” said Sister Eileen McKenzie, a Franciscan nun who works with migrants in Ambos Nogales.

She considered the procession a unique moment of solidarity as they endured temperatures peaking at 96 degrees Fahrenheit (36 degrees Celsius).

“We realized, there are people crossing the desert right now, and they don’t have any (respite). It puts perspective on it. There are more and more people who are going farther and farther out. They are more desperate and they are still crossing.”

Catholic leaders in the United States, along with Pope Leo, have criticized Trump-era immigration policies, singling out mass deportations, conditions in detention facilities and enforcement raids among actions they say contribute to fear and suffering among migrants.

The Supreme Court ruled in two decisions on Thursday that the Trump administration could turn away asylum seekers at the border and strip deportation protections from hundreds of thousands of Haitian and Syrian immigrants.

A gathering of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in November

expressed sadness over “the vilification of immigrants” and concern about the conditions in detention centers and the lack of access to pastoral care.

BISHOP SAYS CHAPLAINS DENIED ACCESS TO SOME DETAINEES

Bishop Mark Seitz, who oversees the Diocese of El Paso, Texas, has been monitoring the situation at the Camp East Montana detention center in nearby Fort Bliss, where he said religious chaplains have sometimes been denied access to detainees.

“Most of these people that are being detained right now, they’re not elderly people. They’re not generally sick people. And yet they’re ‌dying. And, there are many emergency calls from there to people who are suffering mightily,” Seitz said.

He said Catholic priests have only been allowed to celebrate one Mass a week, on Sundays, with room for about 100 faithful, a fraction of the more than 1,000 detainees.

“These are people, 80% of which are probably Catholic and, and many of which, because of their circumstances, are even more needing God in their lives. It’s so unfortunate that we can’t serve them,” Seitz said.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security previously told Reuters that, “ICE is always looking at ways to improve (its) detention facilities,” pointing to a change in contract administration at Camp East Montana following three deaths there between December and January.

The bishops and procession of the faithful were waved across the border into Mexico by federal officials, where they continued praying the rosary, following a banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe.

People walking past smiled at the procession as it made its way to the Church of the Immaculate Conception, where it was welcomed by the Nogales bishop.

Dylan Corbett — executive director of the HOPE Border Institute in El Paso and a member of the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development, a Vatican group that advocates for migrant rights — said the Mass was part of a wider, constant effort by Catholics around the world.

“In Central America, the exodus that we’ve seen from Venezuela, and (in) Haiti, the Church is there providing humanitarian support, standing up structures to be able to reintegrate those who have been deported, providing witness and also advocacy to advance policies that are more humane and will result in a more human and compassionate treatment of migrants,” he added.

On July 4, the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, Pope Leo will celebrate Mass in Lampedusa, an Italian island where hundreds of thousands of migrants have arrived over the years, fleeing war and poverty in parts of Africa and the Middle East.

    2026-06-27T10:30:25.553Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/27/politics/trump-conservatives-abortion-marriage

Trump tamped down fights over abortion and marriage. Conservative activists want to bring them back in 2028

    2026-06-27T10:30:25.553Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/27/politics/trump-conservatives-abortion-marriage

“Protecting life” and strengthening “traditional marriage” remain the stated priorities for the Faith and Freedom Coalition, an organization that has spent nearly two decades mobilizing conservative Christian voters.

But abortion and same-sex marriage received scant attention as the group gathered in the nation’s capital on Friday, including in the lengthy remarks from the event’s headline speaker: President Donald Trump.

Since returning to the White House, Trump has largely sidestepped causes long championed by the conservative faith movement that helped him propel him back to office, privately arguing that issues such as abortion are political liabilities for a Republican Party trying to protect its narrow majorities in Congress. Even as some activists have grown frustrated, they Activists have largely refrained from publicly pressuring Trump to act, mindful of his unparalleled influence over their voters.

Yet, there are growing signs that social conservatives are preparing to revive those fights — and open new ones — as Republicans begin looking forward to a post-Trump future.

SBA Pro-Life America, one of the nation’s leading anti-abortion groups, is already plotting how it can shape the early nominating fight to succeed Trump in Iowa and South Carolina and force Republican presidential candidates to take a stand on establishing a nationwide cutoff on abortions after a certain point in pregnancy. The group has said it plans to spend $80 million in the 2028 presidential election to back aligned candidates.

“We’re being clear early on … if you want to win in Iowa and South Carolina and to be the GOP nominee and become president, you have to have a bold and clear position on abortion and commitment to life,” said Kelsey Pritchard, spokeswoman for SBA Pro-Life.

Meanwhile, a coalition of groups launched an initiative earlier this year aimed at challenging the legal foundations of same-sex marriage and preventing gay and lesbian couples from adopting children. It’s a topic that has largely faded away from Republican campaigns since the Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriage nationwide in 2015 — and one Trump removed from the party platform entirely when he won the nomination in 2024.

Other conservatives are pressing into new territory. A growing number of Republican officials have called for new restrictions on surrogacy, a move that could further limit family-building options for LGBTQ+ couples. Republican House members introduced legislation targeting commercial surrogacy, while Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier recently described the practice as “modern day slavery” and said it “must be stopped.”

Steve Deace, a conservative talk show host, said Trump occupies a uniquely dominant place in Republican politics that allowed him to sideline issues important to many Evangelical activists without suffering political consequences.

“We’re never going to have a personality like Trump again — that combination of brand and political power will never rest in the hands of one figure ever again,” Deace said. “And some of the ideological skirmishes that Trump has kept at bay will come to the forefront as soon as 2028.”

Terry Schilling, the president of American Principles Project, an organization that has encouraged Republicans to engage in culture wars, believes Republicans will enter those debates from a stronger political position than they have in recent decades.

Take support for same-sex marriage, which rose steadily from 1996 to 2022 when it peaked at 71 percent of adults, according to Gallup. But it has dipped each of the past three years.

Gallup also found declining moral acceptance in a handful of other markers it has long tracked, like having a child out of wedlock. Birth control, while still overwhelmingly popular, is at its lowest point since Gallup started asking about it 15 years ago.

Trump’s late-campaign focus on transgender issues in 2024 offered Republicans a roadmap, Schilling said, showing that cultural issues could motivate persuadable voters.

“The Republican Party is going to have to figure out how to play offense on all of these issues,” said Schilling. “If you’re not figuring out how to go on offense, you’re either being lazy or boring.”

Inside the Faith and Freedom Coalition’s annual Road to Majority conference, though, there was little indication that activists were eager to pressure Trump himself – or force him to re-engage on a topic he has all but made off-limits leading up to the midterms.

Introducing Trump, Faith and Freedom Founder and Chairman Ralph Reed praised Trump for shaping “the most conservative Supreme Court in over a century” but didn’t mention the court’s decision overturning Roe v. Wade. Trump, who promised the same audience a decade ago he would “uphold the sanctity and dignity of life” — likewise made no mention of abortion.

Marcus Kindley of Guilford County, North Carolina, told CNN at the event that conservatives should work on persuasion.

“What we should do is stand up for our beliefs, our religious beliefs, but I think that forcing it down people’s throat is not going to work,” he said. “They need to have a change in heart.”

Pam Chester, who traveled to the event from Jackson, Georgia, said Trump had a full plate, from foreign conflicts to his domestic agenda, and she was comfortable leaving abortion policy to the states.

Still, she said Republicans should not allow the movement’s traditional priorities to fade.

“We still cannot take our finger off those issues because they could easily be reversed or undermined if we take our eyes completely off those issues,” she said.

The first signs of those future debates are emerging.

During a recent interview with conservative podcast host Allie Beth Stuckey, Vice President JD Vance was pressed on why the administration had not moved to restrict abortion medication sent through the mail. Vance responded that the issue remains under review by the Food and Drug Administration, while cautioning conservatives against moving faster than public opinion.

“We have to be pragmatic,” Vance said. “We have to win the argument and then we can save the lives of many unborn kids.”

That kind of approach may not appease younger generations of conservatives, who Deace said are “far more militant” on social issues than their parents. He predicted their zealous energy around social issues would significantly shape Republican primaries that follow Trump.

“If you thought Trump was too radical for you, if you thought he was too confrontational for you on cultural issues, you ain’t seen nothing yet,” Deace said.

CNN’s Katie Doran contributed to this report.

Letlow, Fleming face off for Cassidy’s seat in Louisiana GOP Senate runoff

    June 27, 2026 / 6:02 AM EDT / CBS News

Washington — Louisianans are voting Saturday in the state’s Republican Senate runoff, as two candidates vie to replace Sen. Bill Cassidy, who did not receive enough votes in the primary to advance.

Rep. Julia Letlow and Louisiana state Treasurer John Fleming are facing off in the runoff, after no candidate secured 50% of the vote in last month’s primary. At the time, Letlow came in first with more than 44% of the vote, while Fleming secured 28%. Cassidy, the GOP incumbent, came in third.

President Trump encouraged Letlow to challenge Cassidy for the seat earlier this year after Cassidy had occasionally clashed with the administration, most notably with his vote to convict Mr. Trump in his impeachment trial after the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol in 2021. Cassidy, a medical doctor, had also been at odds with the administration over HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s leadership, despite delivering the key vote to advance Kennedy’s nomination last year.

Cassidy’s loss represented a key test of the power of the president’s endorsement, which also preceded Sen. John Cornyn’s primary loss in Texas a few weeks later. Since losing his primary, the Louisiana Republican has appeared more willing to break with the White House, and sparred with the president at a Senate Republican lunch meeting in recent days.

Ahead of the primary, Mr. Trump called Cassidy a “disloyal disaster” and endorsed Letlow, whom he called a “winner who will NEVER let you down.”

Letlow, 45, has represented Louisiana in the House since 2021, when she became the first Republican woman from the state to be elected to Congress. Fleming worked in the first Trump administration and also represented Louisiana in the House from 2009 to 2017.

The winner of Saturday’s runoff will likely be on a glidepath to the Senate. Louisiana is a solidly red state where Mr. Trump won 60% of the vote in 2024. The state last elected a Democrat to the Senate in 2008.
