In July 1962, Marilyn Monroe gave what would be her final interview, with Life Magazine writer Richard Meryman, and her last formal photo shoot, for photographer Allan Grant. She died shortly after the article was published, and the majority of Grant’s photos, and the recordings made by Meryman, have remained unseen and unheard ever since.

Now, Jason Greene and Chris Flannery have compiled Meryman’s complete interview transcript and Grant’s images for “Marilyn: The Lost Photographs, The Last Interview” (Weldon Owen), in which the star speaks candidly about her life, Hollywood, celebrity, and the challenges of the studio system.

    On fame

I DON’T THINK OF MYSELF AS FAMOUS. What counts is what you do. It’s also what you identify yourself with—like with the people. Normally I just wear whatever, but when I’m in a crowd and I’m going to be recognized, I’m more careful the way I dress. I mean, more carefully dressed for the occasion. There are certain times I feel that the public should see me at my best. I’m not going to go running around like a dog. I feel I wouldn’t want to let anybody down and I wouldn’t want to disappoint them. Fantasy is important for people, and so I think in that way.

Sometimes wearing a scarf and a polo coat and no makeup and with a certain attitude of walking, I go shopping or just look at people living. But then, you know, there will be a few teenagers who are kind of sharp, and they’ll say, “Hey, just a minute. You know who I think that is?” And they’ll start tailing me. And I don’t mind. I realize some people want to see if you’re real. The teenagers, the little kids, their faces light up. They say, “Gee,” and they can’t wait to tell their friends. Old people come up and say, “Wait till I tell my wife.” You’ve changed their whole day. In the morning, the garbagemen that go by Fifty-Seventh Street when I come out the door say, “Marilyn, hi! How do you feel this morning?” To me, it’s an honor, and I love them for it. The workingmen, I’ll go by and they’ll whistle. At first they whistle because they think, oh, it’s a girl. She’s got blonde hair and she’s not out of shape, and then they say, “Gosh, it’s Marilyn Monroe!” And that has its . . . you know, those are times it’s nice. People knowing who you are and all of that, and feeling that you’ve meant something to them.”

WASHINGTON, May 29 (Reuters) – A group representing the U.S. travel industry said Friday that removing immigration officials from Newark airport would cause “immediate and lasting harm” and could cost the U.S. economy $8 billion ‌annually in spending by tourists and strand Americans.

The U.S. Travel Association noted that U.S. customs officials at New Jersey’s Newark airport near New York City process 5 million Americans returning home annually.

“American travelers from across the U.S. could find their flights into the U.S. diverted or canceled,” the group said. “Millions of international visitors will face the same disruption, and with the FIFA World Cup weeks away, the damage to America’s reputation as a welcoming destination would be significant and lasting.”

A shutdown could also imperil billions of dollars in imported cargo, the group added.

On Thursday, the head of the Homeland Security Department warned the Trump administration could soon stop processing international travelers and cargo at Newark airport because local law enforcement are not assisting federal immigration officials in northern New Jersey.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin complained that local police were not ensuring that federal immigration officials could enter and exit a ‌New Jersey detention center and warned he could reassign customs officials from the airport.

On Tuesday, Mullin said the Trump administration was drawing up plans to stop processing international travelers and cargo at major U.S. airports in “sanctuary cities” that have declined to cooperate with an immigration crackdown.

The move could effectively halt international air travel and commerce at major airports in Democratic states, with millions of foreign tourists expected to stream in for next month’s start of the FIFA World Cup.

The final will be held July 19 in East Rutherford, New Jersey, about 12 miles from Newark airport.

The U.S. Justice Department published a list of so-called sanctuary cities and states that included many cities with major international airports including Boston, Denver, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Newark, Seattle and San Francisco.

More than 50 million international travelers arrived at the three major New York airports alone last year.

AI warfare is here, and CBS News got a look at the U.S. military training to use it on the battlefield

    May 29, 2026 / 9:52 AM EDT / CBS News

Tan Tan, Morocco— In arid southern Morocco, where the Sahara Desert meets the Atlantic coast, the silence of the desert was shattered this month by the boom of explosions and crackling gunfire.

Plumes of smoke from conventional artillery filled the air as American forces took part in the multi-national African Lion 2026 military exercise. But the U.S. Army also used the war games to test an array of systems powered by artificial intelligence.

African Lion was the largest U.S.-led military exercise in Africa, carried out along with 30 partner nations to rehearse for the future of warfare. Increasingly, that future belongs to AI.

Alongside the military forces, more than a dozen private defense contractors showcased products and got feedback directly from soldiers as they vie for roles — and contracts — to help modernize the U.S. military.

    Shortening the “kill chain”

As the soldiers practiced traditional battlefield tactics, a robot rolled silently across the Moroccan desert with a machine gun mounted on its roof. Drones lifted into the sky nearby carrying explosives, and another prototype quadcopter carried a nine-millimeter rifle.

One of the main applications of AI on display during the exercise was an effort to shorten the “kill chain” — the series of actions required to use lethal force, from the identification of a target to the moment a trigger is pulled.

U.S. Army Lt. Col. Ramon Leonguerrero told CBS News that personnel in the Joint Operations Center in Agadir, hundreds of miles from the mock battlefield, used an AI-driven platform made by American defense tech firm Palantir “to provide that rapid decision-making cycle faster than normal.”

U.S. military personnel work in the Joint Operations Center in Agadir, Morocco, during the joint African Lion 2026 exercise, which used an AI-driven platform made by American defense tech firm Palantir. CBS News

“Five years ago, this might have taken two or three hours,” he told CBS News of a decision made during one exercise. “We did it in three minutes.”

In that drill, there was a human at the end of the kill chain who approved the target and ordered an artillery unit to strike. But Leonguerrero told CBS News that autonomous systems that will decide when to pull the trigger without a human in the loop, to save more time, already exist. He would not say which, if any, real-world operations have used such systems.

At the operations center, dozens of people sat in front of a large screen and coordinated the movements on the ground.

The system powering much of the operation was Project Maven, the Pentagon’s flagship artificial intelligence initiative, created by Palantir. Maven ingests massive quantities of battlefield data and uses AI to identify patterns and prioritize information for commanders, such as determining what to target.

Anthropic’s Claude AI still vital despite row with Pentagon

According to multiple military and industry sources familiar with the systems used in the exercise, Maven’s interface with human operators relies on Anthropic’s Claude large language model. The software helps users query and synthesize what Leonguerrero called “an ocean of data,” allowing operators to interact with battlefield intelligence in plain English.

The drill showed Anthropic still plays a significant role, despite Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth publicly clashing with the company in recent months and labeling it a “supply-chain risk to national security.”

Anthropic has irritated Trump administration officials by pushing for guardrails that would explicitly prevent the military from using its powerful Claude AI model to conduct mass surveillance on Americans — or to power fully autonomous weapons.

“Moral and ethical issues” to figure out, but “the technology is there”

In the Moroccan desert, one U.S. soldier voiced skepticism to CBS News over the idea of letting an autonomous system make critical decisions.

“We can never delegate the responsibility of the decisions over to a computer,” said the soldier, who asked not to be named. “Computers enable us currently, and it’s my projection for the future, but I would never be comfortable delegating the decision that I hold as an officer.”

“It’s a force multiplier that we have to continue to test on, and it is not in any way a one-stop solution,” he added.

On April 30, Hegseth told the Senate Armed Services Committee that AI would not make lethal battlefield decisions, although he wouldn’t directly answer questions about whether that would always be the case.

“There are moral and ethical issues that we have to think through,” General Dagvin R.M. Anderson, who oversees the U.S. military’s Africa Command, told CBS News, adding: “The technology is there, it’s not going to go away, and we ignore it at our own peril.”

Gen. Dagvin R.M. Anderson, Commander of U.S. Africa Command, speaks with CBS News’ Chris Livesay in Agadir, Morocco, in May 2026, amid the African Lion joint military exercise. CBS News

“The technology’s emerging so quickly that we are working to keep up,” he acknowledged, calling the notion of AI taking over lethal responsibilities from humans “ghoulish to me, and it is disturbing.”

“But it’s also foolish not to adopt it because our adversaries will,” he said.

“If you choose not to adopt it, we will be at a disadvantage,” he stressed. “I would not be willing to put our nation into that position.”

Seizing a robotic advantage: “It’s about saving lives”

Another application for battlefield AI showcased during the exercise in Morocco involved keeping soldiers away from the front lines entirely — by replacing them with robots. One of the most visible private defense contractors working on that front was Overland AI, a Seattle-based startup that put its ULTRA fully autonomous vehicle through its paces in the desert.

Using a laptop, a remote operator can tell the ULTRA where to go with just a few clicks, and it will autonomously find its way there, avoiding hazards and obstacles — and packing a machine gun, mines and explosive charges to help deal with any that might pop up.

Overland AI’s Director of Business Development Tim Bishop told CBS News the ULTRA can be used to protect soldiers by deploying covering fire at an enemy. It can also lay mines to prevent enemies from advancing, and deploy explosives to breach an enemy line or structure.

At five feet tall with rugged off-road tires, the ULTRA sped ahead of soldiers toward the line of fire during the exercise, with its cameras and sensors keeping the remote operator aware of its movements.

U.S. soldiers take part in the African Lion 2026 military exercise in Morocco, along with an ULTRA fully autonomous vehicle made by Seattle-based Overland AI. CBS News

For now, the mounted machine gun is operated remotely by the human operator, but Bishop said it would be technically possible to automate that function in the future, with the machine deciding when to open fire.

1st Lt. Vincent Gasparri told CBS News that breaching operations like the ones he and his fellow soldiers practiced that day were among the most dangerous military operations, and replacing humans with robots would “undoubtedly” save lives.

“You don’t have to worry as much about protection and survivability. You can move faster and protect your soldiers while you do it,” he added, estimating that in one particular exercise, they had been able to replace about 40 humans with just two robots.

Gasparri leads the 173rd Airborne Brigade’s Bayonet Innovation Team, a driving force for innovation in the U.S. Army that took part in the exercise. He admitted to some apprehension over how autonomous weapons systems will be incorporated in warfare, but said he was driven by the goal of protecting his fellow soldiers.

“I choose to look around and measure the work we do today as a metric for the number of lives we’ll save in the future,” he told CBS News. “We have to take every advantage, find efficiency, be the fastest, the strongest, enable decision-making faster than the adversary, because it’s about saving lives.”

FIRST ON FOX — Washington, D.C.’s professional baseball franchise could come under Justice Department scrutiny after a viral video showed a team executive appearing to admit to his religious discrimination against a Christian player.

Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., is urging Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche and Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon to investigate alleged religious discrimination against players for the Washington Nationals, according to a letter sent Thursday to and first obtained by Fox News Digital.

The letter comes after Project Veritas founder James O’Keefe published a secretly recorded video of Washington Nationals Director of Community Relations Sean Hudson saying the team does not include pitcher Trevor Williams in certain social media promotion.

He cited the player’s public criticism of another Major League Baseball franchise for hosting a drag group mocking Catholics.

EXCLUSIVE: KENTUCKY BARISTA TAKES LEGAL ACTION AFTER TERMINATION, CLAIMS SHE WAS FIRED FOR SHARING HER FAITH

“According to the reporting by James O’Keefe, it appears the Washington Nationals are engaged in unlawful religious discrimination,” Boebert told Fox News Digital in a written statement. “I urge the DOJ to take immediate and decisive action.”

A spokesperson for the Justice Department said they received Boebert’s letter.

“The Department is reviewing the matter and will evaluate all appropriate next steps. As always, we remain committed to enforcing federal law and protecting civil rights,” they told Fox News Digital.

A spokesperson for the Washington Nationals did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Hudson, in the clandestine recording, pointed to Williams’ public objections to the Los Angeles Dodgers honoring the Sisterhood of Perpetual Indulgence — a drag group that dresses as nuns — during the team’s 2023 “Pride Night.

The event also drew condemnation from multiple Catholic bishops, who described it as “blasphemous.”

Williams said he found the group’s anti-Catholic demonstration featuring vulgar caricatures of the crucifixion and sacred rituals to be “deeply offensive,” in an interview with Bishop Robert Barron last year. The professional baseball player said he made the decision with his wife to speak out even though it would put “a target on our back.”

“Baseball stadiums should be a place where everyone feels welcomed, like 100%,” Williams said in the interview. “We should all feel welcomed there. But that was clearly against one certain religion. If you don’t draw the line in the sand, who’s gonna do it?”

According to Hudson, that public criticism of the drag group’s performance later affected Williams’ opportunities at the Nationals franchise.

“Because of that we don’t use him on social [media],” Hudson told an undercover journalist in the video. “When they’re like ‘is a hot dog a sandwich’ and the players come up, we don’t ask him.”

Boebert said she is concerned that Hudson’s admission could mean the franchise violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on religion and other protected classes.

“Americans of faith should not face professional repercussions for objecting to the mockery of their sacred traditions,” the Colorado Republican said in the letter. “MLB’s privileged legal position should not become a license for exclusionary practices.”

Hudson, in the video, described himself as “far-left leaning” and nonreligious. Meanwhile, he called Williams “super Catholic.”

The Washington Nationals executive also boasted about a Communist Party poster in his office and mused about pushing redistribution of wealth and other leftist agendas during baseball games at Nationals Park in Southeast Washington, D.C.

“What a cool opportunity for us [Nationals] to also, be a little bit of like, the voice of reason,” Hudson said. “And a lot of people will tell you when I come to a baseball game, I don’t want to think about that s–t.”

“If you’re a sports fan we piss you off, where else are you gonna go,” he went on. “I don’t give a sh–t.”

Former chef pleads guilty to selling lethal substances to 14 people who died by suicide

    May 29, 2026 / 11:41 AM EDT / CBS/AP

A Canadian man accused of selling lethal substances online to people who used them to end their own lives pleaded guilty Friday to counseling or aiding suicide.

Wearing a dark blazer and a white shirt, Kenneth Law, a former chef, stood in the prisoner’s box of a Newmarket, Ontario, court to enter his guilty pleas. Sentencing is scheduled for September. As part of the plea agreement, Canadian prosecutors will withdraw 14 murder charges against him.

Police in Canada and around the world have been investigating more than 100 suicides linked to Law. The charges against him in the Canadian court are related to 14 people across Ontario who were between the ages of 16 and 36.

Canadian police said Law used a series of websites to market and sell sodium nitrite, a substance commonly used to cure meats that can be deadly if ingested.

In 2023, Canadian police released photos of the sodium nitrite, adding that a joint operation led by 11 police agencies from across Ontario were investigating the case.

“Investigators are asking members of the community to be alert of any packaging or label identifying sodium nitrite,” Constable Sarah Patten said at the time.

Law is suspected of sending at least 1,200 packages to more than 40 countries, with about 160 of those allegedly sent to addresses in Canada, police said. He has been in custody since his arrest at his Mississauga, Ontario, home in May 2023.

Prosecutors in the U.K. have decided not to charge Law despite investigating him for over 112 deaths.

The Crown Prosecution Service and the National Crime Agency said they had decided Law “should be sentenced for the full extent of his offending within a single sentencing process in Canada.”

In a letter to bereaved families, the organizations said it had been a “difficult decision.”

“No outcome in any court can remove the pain victims and their families have suffered,” they said.

Families of some of those who died called for a public inquiry.

“If our own country will not put anyone on trial for these deaths, the very least it can do is hold a proper inquiry into how they were allowed to happen,” said Adele Zeynep Walton, whose 21-year-old sister Aimee Walton died in 2022.

Kim Prosser’s son Ashtyn took his own life in March 2023 in Canada, weeks before Law’s arrest.

“To be at the courthouse on Friday and to sit there … it’s a beginning to another chapter of this process of healing,” she told AFP this week.

Authorities in the United States, Italy, Australia and New Zealand also have conducted investigations.

Those found guilty of aiding suicide in Canada can face up to 14 years in prison, while first-degree murder carries an automatic sentence of life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.

A New Zealand coroner found four people who died by suicide there had ordered items online from a business associated with Law, but noted Law’s activities are outside the jurisdiction of New Zealand courts.

It is against Canadian law to recommend suicide, although assisted suicide has been legal since 2016 for people 18 and older. Any adult with a serious illness, disease or disability may seek help in dying, but they must ask for assistance from a physician.

Every year, about 4,500 people in Canada die by suicide and every day, more than 200 people in Canada attempt suicide, according to government statistics.

For more information about mental health care resources and support, The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) HelpLine can be reached Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.–10 p.m. ET, at 1-800-950-NAMI (6264) or email info@nami.org.

Ex-US Attorney General Bondi testifies to Congress panel probing Epstein case

REUTERS/Kylie Cooper

WASHINGTON, May 29 (Reuters) – Former U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi appeared on Friday before a closed meeting of a Republican-led congressional committee to testify on the Justice Department’s release of documents related to its investigation of the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

“We will be ‌asking today about why documents still are not released….what documents remain and why they haven’t been turned over,” House of Representatives Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer told reporters beforehand.

Jumpstart your morning with the latest legal news delivered straight to your inbox from The Daily Docket newsletter. Sign up here.

He said that no documents should be held back from the committee.

Under Bondi, the Justice Department released more than 3 million pages of records but faced criticism for holding some of that material from the public. DOJ officials said they would not release information that exposed victims or compromised ongoing investigations, but Democrats and some Republicans accused Bondi of trying to shield President Donald Trump from scrutiny. Trump opposed the release of the information until shortly before Congress overwhelmingly passed a law ordering their release.

Trump fired Bondi on April 2, in part due to her handling of the Epstein files.

Trump and Epstein socialized in the 1990s and early 2000s, but Trump has repeatedly said he ended the relationship before Epstein pleaded guilty in 2008 to soliciting prostitution from a minor.

He was arrested again in 2019 and charged with ‌sex trafficking of minors, accused of recruiting and abusing underage girls in New York and Florida. His death that year in a New York jail cell was ruled a suicide.

The Epstein files revealed the financier’s ties to powerful people including Trump, former President Bill Clinton and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the former Duke of York. All have said they had no knowledge of Epstein’s alleged sex trafficking.

Democratic Representative Robert Garcia of Texas criticized Comer’s decision to not videotape Bondi’s interview, which he said would have allowed the public to gauge her demeanor.

Garcia also said Democrats have questions about the incomplete release of the files, and why some containing private information about Epstein survivors were released to the public, which he said put them in danger.

One survivor of Epstein’s abuse also was on hand to criticize Bondi’s handling of the material.

“It boggles my mind that the Department of Justice released nude photos…the Department of Justice released pornography. That is unacceptable,” survivor Charlene Richard told reporters outside the committee hearing room.

The New York City lawmaker who describes himself as the first “formerly undocumented immigrant” member of Congress was defiant this week when he arrived at Newark’s Delaney Hall detention center waving a court order and demanding entry.

Rep. Adriano Espaillat, a Washington Heights Democrat, was one of three Manhattan lawmakers who converged on the center Wednesday to demand the Trump administration shut it down and, in the interim, treat those held inside more humanely.

“Shut it down,” Espaillat boomed, after spending some time inside Delaney Hall purportedly visiting inmates.

When he arrived, Espaillat and his aides approached the entrance gate, and the lawmaker pulled out a document and waved it, telling guards who he was and that a judge had given him clearance to enter.

“I have a court order here that allows me to come in. I will go in because the Constitution protects me,” Espaillat hollered to the people at the gate.

Espaillat said he is also one of 12 plaintiffs in a lawsuit seeking to force DHS to allow lawmakers into any detention center, including privately operated facilities such as Delaney Hall, at any time without notice.

The order Espaillat waved appeared to have District of Columbia federal court letterhead and included a line stating the case appeared before two Obama appointees, Cornelia Pillard and Robert Wilkins, and one Trump appointee, Neomi Rao, who replaced Justice Brett Kavanaugh on the appellate bench. The lead plaintiff listed was Rep. Joe Neguse, D-Colo.

“I’m going to be introducing legislation that would allow Governor Mikie Sherrill and any governor or any state to be able to come and inspect a federal detention center like this. So I plan to do that very soon,” Espaillat said.

He said any public official should be allowed into Delaney Hall to inspect conditions and claimed the majority of those being held are “working people” before briefly switching to Spanish.

“They are not criminals they… have been ripped from their families and thrown in here,” he said.

ICE FACILITY DEMOCRATS ‘STORMED’ HOLDS CHILD RAPISTS, MURDERERS: OFFICIALS

Soon after he departed, Reps. Jerrold Nadler and Daniel Goldman arrived together, and spent close to two hours inside.

Nadler began speaking out against conditions at the center before he even reached the microphone, alleging the “food is very sparse” and that inmates eat only at 4 a.m., noon and 4 p.m.

“And very often, they eat maggots in the food,” he said, making an allegation denied by those on the other side.

He also claimed medical services were limited and that inmates were waiting a long time for treatment, an allegation protesters also shouted at ICE agents later in the day.

However, ambulances from a local Newark hospital regularly arrived throughout the day Wednesday and Thursday, appearing to contradict claims that detainees were not receiving treatment.

“We know that they’re not getting any kind of justice because we know that the president is — these cases go before immigration judges. And we know the president is firing all immigration judges who grant asylum,” Nadler claimed.

He then yielded to Goldman, who spoke along similar lines but, unlike Nadler, was repeatedly heckled by some in the crowd.

A protester could be heard calling out something about the Israel-Gaza conflict — as both Goldman and Nadler are Jewish — while another man whom a protester verbally accused of being a “Proud Boy” began heckling Goldman about federal statutes that govern the ability to enforce immigration law.

“I want to thank the advocates who are here every day fighting for the freedom of those who are unjustly and illegally being held in there. My colleague, Mr. Nadler, spoke a bit about the conditions. And they, I think, are easiest to be summed up as: this is criminal jail and none of these people are criminals,” Goldman said.

DEMOCRATIC CONGRESSMAN CLAIMS TRUMP’S ICE IS ‘PRIMARILY GOING AFTER INNOCENT PEOPLE, INCLUDING US CITIZENS’

He said he met with a man who had been in the U.S. for 23 years and has American-citizen children — but was detained by DHS when he showed up for a “green card interview.”

“I don’t care what your view is on immigration policy or how you think that the policy should be. The bottom line is if you are human, if you’re American, you cannot support what is going on here,” he said.

Goldman, an attorney who famously represented then-Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., during the Trump impeachment investigation, said the inmates have “almost no legal representation.”

He suggested he repeatedly asked inmates if they had criminal records and routinely was told no.

In turn, he used that recollection to slam the White House and a top Trump confidant who has been active in advising on immigration-related policy.

“When Donald Trump and Stephen Miller say that this ICE deportation dragnet is going after the worst of the worst, they are lying,” he said.

DHS SAYS ‘ARRESTS ARE STILL ON THE TABLE’ AFTER NEW JERSEY HOUSE DEMS CAUGHT ON CAMERA ‘STORMING’ ICE FACILITY

Goldman accused Trump and Miller of intentionally creating dire conditions, such as those alleged inside Delaney Hall, that would lead inmates to opt for “voluntary departure” and self-deportation.

As Goldman continued speaking, a man standing next to him began calling out and interrupting him, asking him to condemn protester violence.

Goldman appeared unfazed but occasionally turned to admonish the man before he was confronted by another member of the congressmen’s security detail.

The visit by the Manhattan lawmakers was less raucous, however, than another public official’s visit the previous day, when Sen. Andy Kim, D-N.J., was pepper-sprayed by ICE after allegedly interceding between the two factions on the street in an apparent attempt to calm tensions.

Things did not cool off after the congressmen left, however, as pepper spray was again deployed Wednesday and Thursday evening while the at-times-heated demonstrations showed no signs of subsiding.
