(Jonathan Ernst)

    NEW YORK, March 7 (Reuters) –

NEW YORK, March 7 (Reuters) – The White House has halted, at least for now, a federal security bulletin warning of a heightened threat to the U.S. in light of the conflict ‌in Iran, a Trump administration official told Reuters.

The bulletin from the FBI, Department of Homeland Security, and National Counterterrorism Center is meant for state and local law enforcement agencies. The Trump administration asked an agency to hold the immediate release of the bulletin for review to ensure its accuracy, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal government matters.

The warning, which was drafted by DHS’ Office of Intelligence and Analysis, did not offer sufficient insight and was not well written, the official told Reuters.

The Daily Mail reported on Friday the White House blocked the release of the bulletin that contains specific details on how Iranian proxies may carry out attacks across the United States.

The FBI and the National Counterterrorism Center did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A ‌U.S. Department of Homeland Security spokesperson told Reuters it is normal procedure for the agency to share intelligence bulletins with the White House for review before they are sent out.

“The White House is coordinating closely with all government agencies to ensure information being disseminated is accurate, up to date, and has been properly vetted — even if that means taking additional time to review to ensure nothing is done in a vacuum,” the White House said in a statement.

The attack on Iran is the biggest U.S. military operation in the Middle East since the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Since last week, the U.S. completed over a dozen charter flights and evacuated thousands of Americans from the Middle East, the State Department said on Saturday.

During the Shield of the Americas summit in Florida on Saturday, outgoing Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem thanked President Donald Trump for appointing her to a newly created role after she was ousted from overseeing the agency.

Noem, who is moving to the newly created position of special envoy for the Shield of the Americas, showed no ill feelings toward the president and said she was proud of her work at DHS, arguing the department had secured the border and eliminated public safety threats.

“I do want to thank the president for creating this and for giving me the honor and the opportunity to serve as a special envoy to this region, to the Western Hemisphere,” Noem said during the summit at Trump National Doral outside Miami.

“This Shield of the Americas will be a powerful example to the rest of the world about what’s possible.”

Trump announced this week that Noem would shift into the new role after cutting short her tenure at DHS.

Noem was removed as the nation’s immigration chief after a turbulent stretch marked by internal clashes and two contentious congressional hearings where even some Republicans pressed her over leadership missteps, including the ad campaign, which she claimed the president had signed off on.

Noem framed the initiative as an effort to expand border security cooperation beyond the United States.

“The way that we cooperate on our shared ideals of freedom and of democracy and safety and security will be a shining light to all of those who wish to be more like all of us,” she said.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR KRISTI NOEM? 2026 SENATE CHATTER GROWS AFTER DHS EXIT

Noem, who previously served in Congress and as South Dakota governor before leading DHS, defended her record overseeing immigration enforcement during the past year.

“In the last year, as secretary of Homeland Security, we have focused on securing our border,” she said. “We have transformed our country from one that was being invaded by enemies, millions of them that were coming in unvetted, that we didn’t know who was there and who wished to harm us.”

“We’ve secured that border,” she continued. “We’ve focused on removing public safety threats, and over 3 million people have been deported or removed from our country in the last year.”

Noem argued that stronger border enforcement has allowed the administration to pivot toward economic and diplomatic engagement with neighboring nations.

“Secure borders has changed everything for our country,” she said. “Now that America is secure and our borders are secure, we want to focus on our neighbors and to help our neighbors with their borders and challenges that they have so that they may have the security that we enjoy.”

Trump announced on Truth Social that Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., will replace her effective March 31, while Noem shifts to the newly created envoy role.

Members of Trump’s Cabinet, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick and United States Trade Representative Jamieson Greer attended Saturday’s summit.

Leaders from other nations included Argentina’s Javier Milei, El Salvador’s Nayib Bukele Ortez, Bolivia’s Rodrigo Paz Pereira, Costa Rica’s Rodrigo Chaves Robles, Panama’s José Raúl Mulino Quintero, and Trinidad and Tobago’s Kamla Persad-Bissessar, Chile’s Jose Antonio Kast, the Dominican Republic’s Luis Rodolfo Abinader Corona, Ecuador’s Daniel Roy Gilchrist Noboa Azín, Guyana’s Mohamed Irfaan Ali, Honduras’ Nasry “Tito” Asfura and Paraguay’s Santiago Peña.

Notably missing were the leaders of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, and Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.

Jan. 6 plaque honoring police officers displayed at the Capitol after a 3-year delay: “Their heroism will never be forgotten”

    2026-03-07T16:00:00-0500 / CBS/AP

Visitors to the U.S. Capitol will now have a visible marker of the siege there on Jan. 6, 2021 and a reminder of the officers who fought and were injured that day.

Steps from the Capitol’s West Front and where the worst of the fighting occurred, workers quietly have installed a plaque honoring the officers, three years after it was required by law to be erected. The plaque was placed on the Senate side of the hallway because that chamber voted unanimously in January to install it after House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., had delayed putting it up.

“On behalf of a grateful Congress, this plaque honors the extraordinary individuals who bravely protected and defended this symbol of democracy on January 6, 2021,” the plaque says. “Their heroism will never be forgotten.”

The Washington Post first reported the installation of the plaque, which was witnessed by a reporter about 4 a.m. EST Saturday. The reporter posted that she “saw two employees working a nightshift,” bolting it to the wall.

It is the first official marker of the violent day in the Capitol. More than 150 officers were injured. Five police officers who served at the Capitol died in the days and weeks afterward.

Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., led the recent effort to install it as he commemorated the fifth anniversary of the attack on the Senate floor in January and described his memories of hearing people break into the building. “We owe them eternal gratitude, and this nation is stronger because of them,” he said of the officers who were overwhelmed by thousands of President Trump’s supporters and eventually pushed them out of the building.

The mob of rioters who violently forced their way past police and broke in was echoing Mr. Trump’s false claims of a stolen election after the Republican was defeated by Democrat Joe Biden. The crowd stopped the congressional certification of Biden’s victory for several hours, sent lawmakers running and vandalized the building before police regained control.

The fight to have the plaque installed came as Mr. Trump returned to office last year and the Republican Congress has remained loyal to him. Trump, who has called Jan. 6 a “day of love,” has tried to deflect blame on Democrats and police for instigating the attack, and many Republicans in Congress have downplayed the violence. After his second inauguration, Mr. Trump pardoned more than 1,500 people who were convicted or charged in the attack, among them, individuals convicted of violent and serious crimes, including assaulting police officers and seditious conspiracy.

Congress passed a law in 2022 that set out instructions for the honorific plaque listing the names of officers “who responded to the violence that occurred.” It gave a one-year deadline for installation, but the plaque never went up.

Democrats who were angry about the missing plaque installed replicas of it outside their offices and called on the GOP leadership to erect it or explain why it was missing.

After more than a year of silence – and a lawsuit from two officers who fought at the Capitol that day – Johnson’s office put out a statement on Jan. 5, the night before the fifth anniversary of the attack, that said the statute authorizing the plaque was “not implementable” and the proposed alternatives also “do not comply.”

Tillis went to the Senate floor later that week and passed a resolution, with no objections from any other senators, to place the plaque on the Senate side.

One of the officers who sued, Daniel Hodges of the Metropolitan Police Department, said Saturday that the lawsuit would continue. Hodges has become an outspoken advocate against what he calls the whitewashing of what really happened on Jan. 6, 2021 during the U.S. Capitol siege.

“The only thing that will stop me is if people stop lying about Jan. 6 and just acknowledge what the day was and what really transpired,” Hodges told CBS News in an earlier interview.

Hodges, who was crushed and beaten by rioters while trapped in the central west front doors steps away from where the plaque is now displayed, said the overnight installation was a “fine stopgap” but that it was not in full compliance with the law.

The original statute said that the plaque should be placed “on” the west front of the Capitol — not near it — and that the officers’ names should be listed on the plaque itself. The new installation has a nearby sign with a QR code that leads to a 45-page document listing the thousands of names of the officers who responded to the Capitol that day.

“The weight of a judicial ruling would help secure the memorial against future tampering,” Hodges said. “Our lawsuit persists.”

Hodges and a former U.S. Capitol Police officer, Harry Dunn, said in the lawsuit that Congress was encouraging a “rewriting of history” by not following the law and installing the plaque.

“It suggests that the officers are not worthy of being recognized, because Congress refuses to recognize them,” the lawsuit says.

The Justice Department has sought to have the case dismissed. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro and others argued that Congress “already has publicly recognized the service of law enforcement personnel” by approving the plaque and that displaying it would not alleviate the problems they claim to face from their work.

Hodges, Dunn and other officers who have told of their experiences that day have been repeatedly criticized and threatened by people loyal to Trump who say the officers are lying. Some of the officers say they are still struggling.

The lawsuit says that “both men live with psychic injuries from that day, compounded by their government’s refusal to recognize their service.”

New York Rep. Adriano Espaillat, the top Democrat on the spending committee that oversees the legislative branch, said “our Capitol Police deserve more” and that he would continue to push Johnson on the issue.

“Make no mistake: they did this at 4AM so no one would see, no ceremony, no real recognition,” Espaillat posted on X.

Trump says he believes bombing of Iranian girls’ school was “done by Iran”

    March 7, 2026 / 6:19 PM EST / CBS News

President Trump on Saturday told reporters, without citing evidence, that he believes a deadly strike on a girls’ primary school in southern Iran last weekend was “done by Iran.”

“In my opinion, based on what I’ve seen, that was done by Iran…We think it was done by Iran, because they’re very inaccurate with their munitions, they have no accuracy whatsoever, it was done by Iran,” Mr. Trump said aboard Air Force One after attending the dignified transfer of six U.S. soldiers who were killed in an Iranian strike in Kuwait on March 1.

When pressed by a reporter if Mr. Trump’s assessment was accurate, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth responded that the Pentagon was “investigating,” adding that “the only side that targets civilians is Iran.”

Iranian-state media and health officials have reported that the strike on Feb. 28, the first day of the war, killed dozens of people, including schoolgirls ages 7 to 12. Iranian officials have blamed the U.S. and Israel for the strike.

Israel was not operating in the area, two sources told CBS News Friday. One of those, an Israeli source, told CBS News that Israel was not behind the strike and said that the Israeli Air Force was not operating near the school.

A person familiar with the ongoing inquiry also told CBS News Friday that U.S. investigators believe the U.S. may have been responsible.

In a statement, White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said that the “investigation is ongoing” into the incident.

“There are no conclusions at this time, and it is both irresponsible and false for anyone to claim otherwise,” Kelly said Friday. “As we have said, unlike the terrorist Iranian regime, the United States does not target civilians.”

The blast occurred in Minab, a city in the southern Iranian province of Hormozgan.

Footage filmed from a parking lot showed black smoke billowing from a damaged building adorned with murals featuring drawings of crayons, children and an apple.

CBS News geolocated the clip to a building in Minab. Iranian media identified the building as the Shajareh Tayyebeh elementary school. Saturdays are regular school days in Iran.

CBS News has also confirmed the building was located in close proximity to two sites controlled by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Iranian state media has said more than 170 people were killed in the explosion.

Six US troops killed in Iran war brought home in dignified transfer

The families of the six US Army Reserve soldiers who were killed this week in Kuwait watched as their loved ones were brought home during a dignified transfer at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Saturday.

President Donald Trump, first lady Melania Trump and Vice President JD Vance joined top military officials observing the solemn event on an overcast afternoon.

The military identified the six service members killed in an Iranian drone strike in Kuwait on March 1 as Maj. Jeffrey O’Brien, Chief Warrant Officer 3 Robert Marzan, Capt. Cody Khork, Sgt. 1st Class Nicole Amor, Sgt. 1st Class Noah Tietjens and Sgt. Declan Coady. Marzan is believed to have been killed in the strike, but is still awaiting final positive identification by a medical examiner.

As the transfer cases were taken from a C-17 across the tarmac at Dover Air Force Base, Trump saluted while wearing a white ball cap with gold “USA” lettering.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Gen. Dan Caine, Attorney General Pam Bondi, White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard and governors and senators from the soldiers’ home states were among those in attendance.

“It’s a very sad day,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One after the transfer. He said that the parents of the service members “were so proud” and that such deaths are “always a very sad thing.”

All six soldiers were assigned with the 103rd Sustainment Command, an Army Reserve unit out of Iowa. They were serving in the Middle East with the 1st Theater Sustainment Command, which oversees the supplying US forces throughout the Middle East.

Brig. Gen. Clint Barnes, the deputy commanding general of 1st Theater Sustainment Command, said this week that the soldiers served “relentlessly, consistently, and fearlessly.”

“They were the ultimate ambassadors for freedom,” Barnes said. “They represent the best of what our country stands for. May God grant their families peace and comfort in their memories. We will never forget them.”

Four of the six soldiers identified had served in the military for roughly two decades, while the youngest had just enlisted in 2023. Several of them had deployed together to Kuwait with the same unit previously, a former senior leader within the 103rd Sustainment Command told CNN.

Khork, 35, is remembered by his loved ones as the “life of the party” who was “known for his infectious spirit, generous heart, and deep care for those who served alongside him and for everyone blessed to know him,” his parents and stepmother said in a statement to CNN.

Amor was just days from returning home, her husband Joey Amor told the Associated Press. She had served in the military since enlisting in 2005, and leaves behind two children — a senior in high school and a fourth grader.

O’Brien was “not only a role model to our kids, but also a goofy and silly dad, always looking for ways to make the kids laugh,” his family said in a statement to CNN affiliate KCCI. He was a husband and father to three children.

A friend of Marzan’s described the chief warrant officer as someone who “would do anything for you, and family and friends meant the most to him.” His sister described him as a “strong leader who lived by example.”

Tietjen, who would have celebrated his 43rd birthday on Tuesday, is remembered as a mentor to younger soldiers and someone who was “so easy to get along with,” the owners of a studio in Bellevue, Nebraska, that Tietjen frequented said in a statement. He leaves behind a wife and son.

Coady, 20, was an Eagle Scout and gym enthusiast. His father said he was considering extending his deployment for another nine months despite expecting to come home in May. He “was a man of few words more often than not,” his sister said in a statement to CNN, “but if you ever had the chance to talk to him about something he was passionate about, you were lucky.”

CNN first reported that the strike occurred on a makeshift operations center at the civilian port of Shuaiba in Kuwait on Sunday morning local time. A source familiar with the situation told CNN the soldiers were working out of a building they described as a triple-wide trailer with office space inside. The drone strike came quickly, and there was no siren or warning ahead of time, which would give time for troops to evacuate to a bunker, the source said.

While there were concrete barrier walls surrounding the building, the source said, there was nothing overhead that could shield it from drones or missiles. Those kinds of barriers are typical for military structures overseas to protect them from things like car bombs.

Caine said this week that the nation grieves with the families of the six fallen.

“To our Gold Star families, to our wounded warriors and their loved ones, we will never forget your sacrifice,” Caine said during a Pentagon briefing. “Our nation stands with you, and we are eternally grateful for your courage, your resiliency, your devotion to this mission and to our nation.”

The president has previously said there will likely be more US casualties in the Iran war. Asked Saturday whether he thought he would have to attend more dignified transfers, Trump said, “I’m sure. I hate to … but it’s a part of war.”
