Ford recalls more than 254,000 vehicles due to software issue that can disrupt rearview camera

    March 24, 2026 / 8:55 AM EDT / CBS News

Ford Motor Co. is recalling 254,640 Lincoln and Explorer vehicles due to a software issue that may disrupt the rearview camera and other features intended to enhance safety while driving.

The recall, announced last week by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), affects some 2022 to 2025 Lincoln Navigator vehicles, 2024 to 2025 Lincoln Nautilus vehicles, 2025 Lincoln Aviator vehicles and 2025 Explorer vehicles.

NHTSA said image processing software in the vehicles could unexpectedly reset, leading to a loss of the rearview camera image and advanced driver assistance (ADAS) features, which include pre-collision assist, lane-keeping assist and blind-spot monitoring. This can reduce the driver’s ability to detect hazards and increase the risk of a crash, according to the recall report.

In the event of a reset, NHTSA said the vehicles’ display panel may show warnings such as “Front Camera Fault,” “Pre-Collision Assist Not Available” or “Lane-Keeping System Off.” The blind-spot indicators may also illuminate, the agency said.

Impacted drivers can bring their vehicles to a dealership for a free update. Ford will also be issuing an over-the-air (OTA) update free of charge, NHTSA said.

The car maker is planning to mail notification letters to affected owners on March 30. The recall number is 26V165.

Former special counsel Jack Smith sought more than two years’ worth of phone records for now-FBI Director Kash Patel while Smith was investigating President Donald Trump, according to a tranche of documents released Tuesday by Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa.

Two subpoenas showed Smith’s team asked Verizon for Patel’s phone records dating from October 2020 through February 2023. Patel first announced the subpoenas’ existence in February, calling them “outrageous and deeply alarming” at the time.

Patel worked in the first Trump administration from 2019 through January 2021, before becoming an outspoken pro-Trump firebrand as a private citizen, meaning the subpoenas stretched back into his time as a government official.

The subpoenas were accompanied by one-year, court-authorized gag orders, meaning Verizon was ordered by the court not to alert Patel of their existence. It is common for prosecutors to subpoena phone records, also known as toll records, as part of investigations. The records would not include contents of messages but would show with whom Patel communicated and when.

Grassley released the documents ahead of a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing examining Arctic Frost, the FBI investigation that led to Smith prosecuting Trump over the 2020 election. Patel was also a known witness in a separate FBI probe into Trump’s handling of classified documents, and it is unclear which of the investigations the subpoenas pertained to.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, voiced at the start of the hearing what many Republicans have said about the Biden DOJ’s efforts to investigate Trump, noting how the expansive probes targeted hundreds of Republican individuals and entities.

“If Watergate taught us anything, it is that even a single abuse of power carried out by a handful of individuals can shake the foundations of our republic,” Cruz said. “But what we confront today, the Biden administration’s Arctic Frost scheme is not a single act. It is a modern Watergate, trading a break-in at one office for a digital sweep into approximately 100,000 private communications. More than a dozen senators and thousands of individuals lives.”

Smith, who became special counsel in November 2022 and resigned when Trump took office, has since appeared before Congress for public and closed-door testimony and repeatedly defended his work as by-the-book and apolitical.

Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., noted during the hearing that Patel testified to a grand jury as part of the classified documents investigation and that it was “obvious” why Smith was interested in Patel.

“Patel made himself a fact witness in that investigation,” Whitehouse said. “He went on podcasts bragging about how he planned to post classified information online at Donald Trump’s direction, and how he’d personally witnessed Donald Trump declassify records.”

The new documents released by Grassley also included briefing materials Smith’s team prepared for Attorney General Merrick Garland that noted the FBI’s investigative work was “going well,” that meetings were happening among top FBI and DOJ officials and D.C. federal judges and that Smith was relying on the Democrat-led Jan. 6 Committee’s work to help with his investigation.

Taliban releases U.S. citizen Dennis Coyle over a year after he was detained

    March 24, 2026 / 10:55 AM EDT / CBS News

Afghanistan’s Taliban government on Tuesday announced that it released a U.S. national who had been detained since January 2025.

The foreign ministry said in a statement it agreed to the release after a letter from his family, and that Dennis Coyle “would be pardoned and released” for Eid, the holiday marking the end of Ramadan. The U.S. State Department later confirmed Coyle’s release.

A Taliban senior official involved in prisoner negotiations told CBS News that the Taliban and U.S. have been holding talks since the last week of February.

Coyle, a 64-year-old academic from Colorado, was taken by force from his Kabul apartment by the Taliban. His abduction came just six days after another American, Ryan Corbett, was released at the start of President Trump’s second term.

Coyle was being released “based on humanitarian sympathy and goodwill, and believes that such steps can further strengthen the atmosphere of trust between countries,” the foreign ministry said in its statement, adding that Kabul “also expresses the hope that both countries will find solutions to the remaining problems through understanding and constructive dialogue in the future.”

Earlier this month, the U.S. State Department announced the designation of Afghanistan as a sponsor of wrongful detention.

“Earlier this month, I met Molly, Amy, and Patti as they asked for help freeing their brother Dennis Coyle from detention in Afghanistan,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote on social media. “Today, Dennis is on his way home…. The release is a positive step towards ending the practice of hostage diplomacy.”

Undated photo of Dennis Coyle, an American who is has been detained in Afghanistan by the Taliban since Jan. 26, 2025. Family of Dennis Coyle

Coyle, who spent nearly two decades in Afghanistan conducting language research, was being held by the Taliban General Directorate of Intelligence in near-solitary confinement with no charges filed, according to his family. Coyle’s capture so soon after Corbett’s release illustrates the ongoing risks faced by Americans in Afghanistan, even those with long-standing legal status and deep ties to local communities.

Last June, the U.S. government officially designated Coyle as wrongfully detained under the Robert Levinson Hostage Recovery and Hostage-Taking Accountability Act, a status that unlocks select government tools and elevates the priority of efforts to secure his release.

The United States does not recognize the Taliban as Afghanistan’s legitimate government and lacks a diplomatic presence in the country, complicating release negotiations that are often conducted by Qatar as an intermediary on behalf of the U.S.

According to a source with knowledge of the release, a Qatari team paid regular visits to Coyle to check on his health and to facilitate communication between him and his family.

Those efforts included a visit around Christmas when Qatari officials met with Coyle and conveyed a message from his family, and another meeting last month when he gave them a letter he wrote to his mother.

The Biden administration held negotiations with the Taliban to swap Americans detained in Afghanistan for Muhammad Rahim al Afghani, a Guantanamo Bay detainee alleged to have been an associate of Osama bin Laden, but the talks ultimately fell through. U.S. officials proposed releasing Rahim in exchange for George Glezmann, Ryan Corbett and Afghan-American Mahmoud Habibi, who was abducted in 2022. The Taliban countered by seeking Rahim and two others while denying it held Habibi.

The Taliban continue to hold the remains of American Paul Overby, one citizen who has not been named and whose circumstances remain murky, and Habibi — though the Taliban have never acknowledged his case.

In a statement released to CBS News on Tuesday, Habibi’s family applauded the release of Coyle.

“My family and I are grateful to hear the new of Dennis’ release,” his brother Ahmad Habibi said in a statement. “We hope that our family will soon have the same feeling of relief, when Mahmood is returned home to us. The U.S. Government has overwhelming evidence that the Taliban’s General Directorate of Intelligence arrested my brother. Taliban denials of this obvious fact make it impossible for the people of Afghanistan to get the foreign assistance they need.”

The Taliban official who spoke to CBS News on Tuesday said Rahim “should have been freed by now, but unfortunately the American side have not acted on their earlier promises and commitments yet.”

With the help of Qatari negotiators, Corbett and another American, William McKenty, were released last January in exchange for a Taliban figure who had been imprisoned for life on drug trafficking charges. Glezmann and another American, Faye Hall, were released in March, followed by a fifth American, Amir Amiri, who was freed last September.

The State Department has offered a $5 million reward for information leading to Habibi’s return.

(Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images)

Reporter’s Notebook: GOP eyes DHS deal funding ICE probes, but not removals, as shutdown drags

The plan would fund ICE investigations but leave enforcement and removal programs unfunded

This is cobbled together talking to senior Senate Republican sources.

Senate Republicans are developing a plan to fund most aspects of DHS — leaving out controversial programs like certain ICE operations — to end the five-and-a-half week partial government shutdown. This emerged after a meeting at the White House last night. There is a lot to sort out at the GOP Conference luncheon at the Capitol today.

However, Fox is told that the Senate could start to move forward on a plan to end the DHS shutdown “as early as tonight.”

[SCHIFF, BOOKER DEFLECT ON SHUTDOWN BLAME AMID TERROR CONCERNS, THOUSANDS OF DHS WORKERS WITHOUT PAY]

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., speaks at a press conference with other members of Senate Republican leadership following a policy luncheon in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 28, 2025.(Nathan Posner/Anadolu via Getty Images)

The new plan would fund ICE investigations — like cartels, traffickers and child predators. But they will leave unfunded programs for “enforcement and removal.”

Ironically, this idea would mirror what Democrats have tried to do on multiple occasions. Democrats have asked unanimous consent on the floor to pass bills to fund DHS — sans ICE.

So, Republicans have come around to the position that this is the only way out of this cul-de-sac — even if it reflects the Democratic position.

Still, Republicans contend they are “calling the Democrats bluff.”

“We’re going to have to move forward and give them what they want,” said one Senate Republican source, referring to the Democrats.

[THUNE REVEALS REASON DEMOCRATS ARE ‘SCARED’ TO REOPEN DHS]

Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., arrives for a news conference outside the U.S. Capitol after President Donald Trump selected Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., to replace Kristi Noem as the Department of Homeland Security secretary on Thursday, March 5, 2026.(Tom Williams/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images)

But the question is whether Democrats will balk — especially since this was their idea. Regardless, this approach would still need Democratic buy-in and need 60 votes to clear a filibuster.

Fox is told that this is NOT pre-baked with House Republicans. The House and Senate would have to sync up to end the shutdown. Lawmakers on both sides are increasingly freaked out about the possibility of a terrorist attack — to say nothing of watching lengthy lines at airports.

Now the question is what Republicans can do with the SAVE America Act.

[SEN KENNEDY SAYS HE WOULD ACCEPT DEMOCRATS’ OFFER TO ‘OPEN UP EVERYTHING’ BUT ICE]

ICE agents arrive at JFK airport in New York City, N.Y., on Monday, March 23, 2026. The agents are being brought in to assist TSA agents amid staffing shortages due to the government shutdown.(David Dee Delgado for Fox News)

Fox is told that Republicans hope to extract a promise from Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, to come off the SAVE America Act — and resume that debate after the Easter/Passover recess.

But that bill lacks the votes to pass.

In addition, Republicans are looking at stuffing some provisions from the SAVE America Act into a budget reconciliation package. By nature, a reconciliation package is NOT subject to a filibuster and only needs a simple majority to pass. However, reconciliation requires bills be fiscal in nature and deal with numbers, not policy.

[CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FOX NEWS APP]

It is possible Republicans could fund the enforcement and removal programs at ICE under budget reconciliation. But portions of the SAVE America Act are dicey. Fox is told that Republicans could try to focus on the “money” aspects of the SAVE America Act — such as withholding dollars from states which don’t require photo ID, et al. But getting those provisions past the Senate umpire, Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough, is challenging. MacDonough could rule out of order policy provisions pertaining to the SAVE America Act in a reconciliation measure.

TSA wait times stretch up to 6 hours as ICE and other Homeland Security agents deployed to 14 airports

    March 24, 2026 / 9:33 AM EDT / CBS News

The Trump administration deployed ICE and other Homeland Security agents to 14 of the nation’s airports on Monday to help shuttle passengers through overcrowded TSA checkpoints. In one airport, the security line wait-time was up to six hours.

The agents are filling in for TSA officers in some places due to mass call-outs during the partial government shutdown that is keeping the officers from receiving their paychecks.

More than 3,400 TSA officers — nearly 12% of all TSA officers who were scheduled to work — called out on Sunday, which is the most since the start of the partial shutdown.

Amid severe staffing shortages, some travelers navigating George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston dealt with six-hour wait times. Lines there snaked up three floors, starting in the basement’s subway corridor before passing through the baggage claim area.

Security lines at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport extended all the way outside the terminal.

Across the country, some travelers expressed hope that federal agents might help ease the TSA bottleneck, but others were skeptical, including TSA officer and union representative Pascual Contreras.

“I don’t believe that they’re trained in a way that they can help us,” Contreras said. “I’ve seen them outside standing around, I don’t know if they are doing anything.”

President Trump has told federal agents not to wear masks while operating in airports. He has also said they may soon be joined by National Guard troops if a deal to end the shutdown is not reached.

Senate talks aimed at ending it hit a new roadblock on Monday after Mr. Trump called on Republicans to hold out for passage of an elections bill that Democrats strongly oppose — though some key senators suggested Monday a deal to fund parts of the Department of Homeland Security is still possible.

Trump votes by mail as he dubs mail-in voting ‘cheating’

WASHINGTON, March 24 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump took advantage of mail-in voting this week in a special election in Florida, even as he criticized mail-in ballots as “cheating” in his push for national legislation to enact new regulations on voting.

At an event in Memphis, Tennessee on Monday, Trump dismissed the option with unfounded allegations that mail-in voting is more susceptible to fraud.

“Mail-in voting means mail-in cheating. I call it mail-in cheating, and we got to do something about it all. And it’s part of Homeland Security,” Trump said at a roundtable on crime.

Trump said on Sunday his fellow Republicans should not reach an agreement on funding the Department of Homeland Security until Democrats in Congress approve a bill – the SAVE America Act – that requires people registering to vote to provide proof of U.S. citizenship.

Trump also pushed for Democratic approval of other items he wants added to the bill, including banning transgender women from women’s sports, outlawing “transgender mutilation of our children” and restricting mail-in ‌ballots except in cases of illness, disability, military service or travel.

The White House said Trump is a resident of Palm Beach and participates in Florida elections but lives primarily at the White House.

“As President Trump has said, the SAVE America Act has commonsense exceptions for Americans to use mail-in ballots for illness, disability, military, or travel – but universal mail-in voting should not be allowed because it’s highly susceptible to fraud,” White House spokeswoman Olivia Wales said in an email.

However, election fraud is rare in voting by mail. Routine methods and the decentralized nature of U.S. elections make it very hard to interfere with mailed ballots, experts say.

It was not the first time Trump has voted by mail. He voted by absentee ballot in the 2018 midterm elections, a White House spokesman said at the time. Trump had requested an absentee ballot but decided to vote in person in 2020.

(INTELNET0/X提供)

(INTELNET0/X提供)
