Trump administration temporarily lifts sanctions on Iranian oil at sea amid soaring prices

The U.S. Treasury has authorized the purchase of Iranian oil that’s already at sea, exempting buyers from the tight sanctions that have restricted the country’s oil industry for years — a move aimed at stemming soaring prices amid the U.S.’s war with Iran.

The sanctions license allows oil from Iran to be purchased if it was loaded onto a ship by 12:01 a.m. ET on Friday. The authorization lasts until April 19.

The Trump administration had telegraphed the move this week. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a Thursday morning Fox Business interview that

The failure to protect explicit case evidence in “American Nightmare” survivor Denise Huskins’ kidnapping and sexual assault case is driving reform at the California State Capitol. New developments in her case exposed a little-known gap in state law that could expose videos of sexual assault victims.

Huskins and her husband, Aaron Quinn, are preparing to testify on behalf of a victims’ privacy bill after discovering her kidnapper and his wife had been given copies of explicit case evidence during his trial. A decade after his conviction, his now ex-wife still had the evidence in her home.

Huskins’ kidnapping was the subject of one of Netflix’s most-watched true-crime docuseries, “American Nightmare.” In March 2015, Matthew Muller invaded Quinn’s Vallejo home, blindfolding and drugging the couple. He kidnapped, raped, and held Huskins for ransom in South Lake Tahoe for two days before releasing her.

Law enforcement officials then falsely accused Huskins of orchestrating her own kidnapping, a claim widely compared to the plot of the movie “Gone Girl.” Months later, after authorities arrested Muller for a separate attempted kidnapping, he pleaded guilty to kidnapping and sexually assaulting Huskins.

Exposing a legal loophole

Huskins and Quinn worked with law enforcement over the past year to help reopen and solve cold case crimes tied to her attacker.

It was during those investigations and subsequent confessions from Muller that they discovered a failure to protect explicit evidence in her case and potentially others.

According to investigators, and a decade after Muller’s conviction, his now ex-wife confirmed that they had been given explicit evidence of the sexual assaults as part of the legal discovery process — videotaped recordings of the assaults investigators say Muller made as he committed the crimes. Muller represented himself for a period, and his ex-wife said she was working as his legal assistant.

CBS News California has reached out to the district attorney, the public defender, and the court to understand how Muller ended up with the explicit evidence and why his ex-wife wasn’t asked to return it for more than a decade.

The Solano County District Attorney’s Office pointed to a protective order governing the videos, signed by the Deputy District Attorney who prosecuted the case and Muller’s defense attorney, Deputy Public Defender Stephanie Grogan-Jones, who is now a Solano County judge.

The order specified, “While the defendant may review the materials in the presence of counsel, under no circumstances shall the defendant be given copies of any part of these materials to keep, nor shall the defendant be left alone with these materials.”

The protective order also required that the materials, and any copies, “be returned to the Court for destruction within thirty (30) days of the conclusion of this case.”

Investigators now say that did not happen.

“Part of videoing it is his ability to continue to exploit and re-victimize me over and over again every time he viewed it,” Huskins explained.

The discovery was deeply disturbing for Huskins, not just because of the failure to protect the evidence in her case, but because it exposed a breakdown in state law and in how court-ordered safeguards were carried out.

“It’s unnecessary and, quite frankly, it feels cruel,” Huskins said.

CBS News California is still awaiting responses from prosecutors, the public defender who handled the case — now a Solano County judge — and the Solano County court about who was responsible for safeguarding the evidence, how the protective order was implemented, and whether it was ultimately enforced.

A gap in California law

California law already requires courts to seal sexually explicit evidence involving children, but protections are far less clear for adult victims.

“There isn’t a law,” said Sacramento County Deputy District Attorney Sonja Satchell, who has a long career prosecuting sex crimes. “We are governed by best practices… and those practices can vary from county to county. There is no uniformity.”

Even in cases where protective orders are issued, there is no consistent system to track or verify compliance once a case ends.

That means decisions about how to handle explicit evidence involving adult victims are often left to individual prosecutors or the courts without consistent statewide standards.

To learn that there wasn’t more care, more guidelines and restrictions, was just another insult to injury,” Huskins said. “In this digital age, it just seems like common sense to make sure that any kind of video footage or any kind discovery that included sensitive material around sexual assault, that there would be stricter protocols and guidelines around it.”

The push for reform: SB 1056

Huskins and Quinn are now working with lawmakers to set those guidelines.

They are backing Senate Bill 1056, authored by Senator Tim Grayson, which would require courts to issue protective orders governing sexually explicit evidence involving victims of any age, and limit how that material can be copied, shared, or accessed.

Grayson’s bill would shift responsibility from prosecutors to the courts, creating a uniform standard across California. It would also prohibit attorneys from providing copies of that material directly to defendants or others without court approval and a showing of good cause, while still allowing access for legal preparation under strict court-ordered conditions.

“If survivors don’t feel like they’re going to be safe and protected, they are not going to come forward,” Huskins said.

The bill comes as new scrutiny is placed not just on the lack of statewide standards, but on whether existing court orders are being followed and enforced.

From survivor to advocate

The effort represents the next chapter in Huskins and Quinn’s journey, which began with trauma and is evolving into advocacy.

They are expected to testify before the California State Senate Public Safety Committee as lawmakers consider the bill on March 24.

CBS News California accompanied them to the State Capitol, where they had the chance to visit the hearing room that they’ll be testifying in. Huskins described the moment as both surreal and meaningful.

“It’s healing to know that we have a voice… and we can use it,” she said.

A broader impact

The couple says the goal is simple: ensure no other survivor has to worry that evidence of their assault could resurface years later, outside their control, re-victimizing them as it did Huskins.

“We’ve met so many people who are already doing amazing work,” Huskins said.” “So if we could just help in any way, it’s a huge honor and it’s worth every second .”

Their case, once dismissed as a hoax, is now exposing gaps in both the law and the system meant to enforce it — and driving changes that could better protect victims moving forward.

The Trump administration filed a lawsuit Friday against Harvard University, alleging that it failed to protect Jewish and Israeli students by essentially enabling antisemitism on campus in the wake of the Oct. 7, 2023, attack against Israel by Hamas.

The 44-page lawsuit, filed in Massachusetts, is the latest in an ongoing battle between the White House and the Ivy League school. The complaint alleges that Harvard has tolerated antisemitic mobs comprised of students, faculty members and visitors opposed to Israel and has acted with indifference by selectively enforcing its campus rules to permit the continuation of the harassment.

“Harvard University has failed to protect its Jewish students from harassment and has allowed discrimination to wreak havoc on its campus,” a White House spokesperson told Fox News. “President Trump is committed to ensuring every student can pursue their academic goals in a safe environment.”

The administration is seeking to recover billions of taxpayer dollars given to the elite university by federal agencies.

“Since October 7, 2023, too many of our educational institutions have allowed antisemitism to flourish on campus – Harvard included,” said Attorney General Pam Bondi. “Today’s litigation underscores the Trump administration’s commitment to demanding better from our nation’s schools and putting an end to discriminatory behavior that harms students.”

In a statement to Fox News Digital, a Harvard spokesperson said the university “cares deeply” about its Jewish and Israeli students and remains committed to making sure they are embraced and respected.

“Our actions illustrate this. Harvard has taken substantive, proactive steps to address the root causes of antisemitism and actively enforces anti-harassment and anti-discrimination rules and policies on campus,” the statement said.”We also have enhanced training and education on antisemitism for students, faculty, and staff and launched programs to promote civil dialogue and respectful disagreement inside and outside the classroom. Harvard’s efforts demonstrate the very opposite of deliberate indifference.”

The school said it will continue to prioritize such work and defend itself, calling the lawsuit “yet another pretextual and retaliatory action by the administration for refusing to turn over control of Harvard to the federal government.”

Friday’s lawsuit is another in the protracted battle between Havard and President Donald Trump. In June, the administration said a civil rights investigation had led to a formal finding that Harvard tolerated antisemitism.

“Harvard remained deliberately indifferent to a level of hostility on its campus so well-known across the nation that members of Congress were writing about it,” government lawyers wrote. “Harvard also intentionally refused to enforce its campus rules — rules it enforced against others — when the victims were Jews or Israelis. This sent the clear message to Harvard’s Jewish and Israeli community that the indifference was not an accident; they were being intentionally excluded and effectively denied equal access to educational opportunities.”

Last year, the school sued the Trump administration over the freezing of federal funds. A judge blocked the Trump administration’s attempt to freeze Harvard’s federal funds.

The Internal Revenue Service was also considering stripping Harvard of its tax-exempt status.

Harvard is slated to receive more than $2.6 billion from the Department of Health and Human Services, the Justice Department said.

In February, the Trump administration said it was seeking to recover $1 billion in damages from Harvard, the main target in its attempt to leverage federal funding in order to crack down on antisemitism on college campuses.

HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. said institutions that take taxpayer funds are obligated to protect civil rights.

“We hold Harvard accountable on the principle that antisemitism has no place in any program funded by the American people,” he said.

WASHINGTON, March 20 (Reuters) – Absences among Transportation Security Administration ​airport security officers ‌fell slightly on Thursday to 9.8% nationwide ​but was much ​higher at some major ⁠airports, the government ​said on Friday.

The absenteeism ​rate among the 50,000 TSA officers fell from ​10.2% on Wednesday ​but was significantly higher at ‌major ⁠airports on Thursday including 29% at New York’s JFK, ​27% at ​New ⁠Orleans, Baltimore Washington at 23%, ​32% at Atlanta ​and ⁠over 30% at both Houston airports, ⁠the ​Homeland Security ​Department said.

NATO pulls several hundred personnel from Iraq amid Iran war – CBS News

NATO has pulled several hundred personnel out of Iraq as the Iran war rages on, the alliance said in a statement Friday.

The last of the personnel from the group, known as NATO Mission Iraq, left Iraq on Friday, the alliance said. The personnel come from NATO allies as well as from partner countries Austria and Australia. The withdrawal follows attacks from Iran on British, French and Italian bases in Iraq.

The noncombat mission was created in 2018 at the request of Iraqi authorities to help the country as officials sought to bolster its security forces and fight against terrorism. NATO personnel trained members of Iraq’s security forces but weren’t deployed with them during combat operations, according to the alliance.

U.S. Air Force Gen. Alexus Grynkewich, the commander of NATO’s forces in Europe, thanked Iraq and allies for assisting in the relocation.

“I would also like to thank the dedicated men and women of NATO Mission Iraq, who continued their mission throughout this period. They are true professionals,” Grynkewich said in a statement Friday.

The announcement comes as the alliance faces criticism from President Trump, who called NATO “A PAPER TIGER” and “COWARDS” Friday as he seeks military assistance in securing the Strait of Hormuz, the waterway that’s vital for transporting oil from the Persian Gulf.

“They didn’t want to join the fight to stop a Nuclear Powered Iran,” Mr. Trump said on his Truth Social platform. “Now that fight is Militarily WON, with very little danger for them, they complain about the high oil prices they are forced to pay, but don’t want to help open the Strait of Hormuz, a simple military maneuver that is the single reason for the high oil prices.”

Mexican president condemns deaths of citizens in U.S. custody: “This can’t be happening”

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum on Friday condemned the deaths of three Mexican nationals after they were taken into custody by U.S. immigration authorities this year.

“This can’t be happening,” Sheinbaum told reporters, referring to the death of a 19-year-old at a detention center in Florida on Monday and two others who died earlier this year.

“The report says the young man killed himself,” Sheinbaum said. “Nonetheless, we want a full investigation.”

Royer Perez Jimenez was arrested in January and charged with fraud for impersonation and misdemeanor resisting an officer, ICE said in a statement reported by CBS Miami.

He was found in his cell at the Glades County Detention Center at 2:34 a.m. local time on March 16, CBS Miami reported. Prison staff “immediately” began life-saving efforts, the agency said. The cause of death was “presumed suicide” but remains under investigation, ICE said.

Other Mexicans who died while caught in President Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration include Heber Sanchez Domínguez, 34, in January. Domínguez was in ICE custody for six days after being arrested for driving without a license, and was awaiting a hearing when he was found “hanging by the neck and unresponsive in his sleeping quarters” at a Georgia facility at about 2:05 a.m. local time, DHS said at the time. A 48-year-old Mexican man died in ICE custody in March.

The Mexican government said Thursday that “these deaths are becoming unacceptable” and that officials “won’t hold back in using available legal and diplomatic tools to defend the rights” of Mexicans abroad.

“We’re going to use all measures to make our protests and support the family in everything they need,” Sheinbaum said.

At least 30 migrants died in US detention centers last year, the highest number since 2004, a year after the creation of ICE. There have been at least 12 deaths so far this year, including that of an Afghan man who served with the U.S. military, a Haitian man whose family said his untreated toothache became a deadly infection, and a Cuban immigrant whose death in a Texas facility has been ruled a homicide.

Mr. Trump has promised the most extensive deportation program for undocumented migrants in U.S. history and ICE has been at the forefront of often violent raids across U.S. cities.

US intel finds no China plan to invade Taiwan by 2027, despite military buildup

US intelligence now says Chinese leaders have no fixed timeline for unification, a shift from years of warnings about a narrowing window for action

Despite years of warnings that China could move on Taiwan within the decade, the U.S. intelligence community now assesses that Beijing is not planning an invasion of Taiwan by 2027 and has no fixed timeline for doing so.

“The IC assesses that Chinese leaders do not currently plan to execute an invasion of Taiwan in 2027, nor do they have a fixed timeline for achieving unification,” according to a newly released Annual Threat Assessment.

The finding marks a shift from prior warnings in Washington that China would have the capability to move on Taiwan within a narrowing window — often referred to as the “Davidson Window,” after a 2021 warning from a top U.S. Indo-Pacific commander.

That benchmark gained traction after then-Indo-Pacific Commander Adm. Philip Davidson told lawmakers in 2021 that China could attempt to take control of Taiwan “in the next six years,” warning the threat would “manifest during this decade.”

BEIJING LEVERAGES UN TROOPS, FUNDING TO EXPAND GLOBAL INFLUENCE, HOUSE REPORT WARNS

China is currently “building a force with the aim of being capable of deterring U.S. and allied forces in the region and to achieve their stated objective of developing the ability to seize Taiwan by force if necessary,” Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard told Congress during a worldwide threat hearing Wednesday. “However, the IC assesses that China likely prefers to set the conditions for an eventual peaceful reunification with Taiwan, short of conflict.”

Unlike previous assessments, which focused on China’s growing military pressure and invasion capabilities, earlier reports did not make a definitive judgment about whether Beijing planned to use force. The 2024 and 2025 assessments described Taiwan as a potential flashpoint and warned China was building the capability for a cross-strait campaign, but stopped short of assigning a timeline or stating intent.

Despite the assessment, the report underscores that China has not abandoned its goal of bringing Taiwan under its control and continues to build the military capabilities needed to do so.

Beijing “prefers to achieve unification without the use of force, if possible,” but the People’s Liberation Army is still developing plans and capabilities for a potential military operation, the report says.

Retired Navy Capt. Brent Sadler, a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation, said the assessment risks being read too broadly if policymakers focus only on China’s current intentions rather than its growing capabilities.

“Intentions can change in a New York second,” Sadler told Fox News Digital. “Xi Jinping could wake up and decide, ‘I don’t want to go to war today,’ but he could wake up tomorrow in the morning and say, ‘Yeah, today’s the day.’ The real issue is where the money and where the materials are going.”

The annual threat assessment, produced by the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, reflects the coordinated analysis of the U.S. intelligence community and is mandated by Congress to provide lawmakers with an unclassified overview of the most pressing global threats. The report is compiled with input from across the intelligence agencies based on updates throughout the past year.

The assessment is released annually in both classified and unclassified forms, with a public version intended to outline key threats without revealing sensitive intelligence sources or methods.

U.S. intelligence officials also note that any decision by China to use force would depend on several factors, including military readiness, Taiwan’s political trajectory and whether the United States would intervene on the island’s behalf.

The report warns that a full-scale invasion would be difficult and risky, particularly if U.S. forces become involved, with Chinese officials recognizing that such an operation would be “extremely challenging” and carry a high risk of failure.

Piero Tozzi, a senior fellow at the Center for China at the America First Policy Institute, argued Beijing is still focused on trying to take Taiwan without a direct military confrontation.

“What they want to do is to win Taiwan without a war,” Tozzi told Fox News Digital, pointing instead to what he described as ongoing “cognitive warfare” efforts targeting Taiwan’s political system and public opinion.

He added that a full-scale amphibious invasion would come at a steep cost for China.

“An actual invasion of Taiwan would be very bloody,” Tozzi said. “If you had a maritime invasion of Taiwan and the casualties, you’d be talking about wiping out entire family lineages in the tens of thousands. That would lead to serious internal unrest within China, and that would threaten the regime.”

More broadly, the intelligence community assesses that China is continuing to expand its military power and global influence while seeking to “buy time to strengthen its position” in its long-term competition with the United States.

The updated assessment comes as the U.S. remains heavily engaged in a high-intensity conflict with Iran, raising new questions among defense analysts about how global tensions could shape Beijing’s calculus on Taiwan.

While the report does not directly link the recent Iran conflict to China’s timeline, it highlights a broader environment of rising geopolitical competition, military modernization and regional instability that could influence future decisions in Beijing.

At the same time, the intelligence community warns that Iran is likely to continue posing a threat to U.S. interests following recent military strikes, noting that Iran “almost certainly will seek to exact revenge” for the death of its supreme leader.

Even without a near-term move on Taiwan, the report makes clear that the risk of conflict with China remains, as Beijing continues preparing for a range of military contingencies while pursuing its long-term goal of unification.

Nearly 90,000 bottles of children’s ibuprofen recalled due to reports of foreign substances

Nearly 90,000 bottles of children’s ibuprofen are being recalled because they may contain a foreign substance, according to a notice issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The recall affects Children’s Ibuprofen Oral Suspension, a pain reliever that comes in liquid form. The product was manufactured in India by Strides Pharma for Taro Pharmaceuticals.

The medication is intended for children ages 2 to 11 and helps reduce pain and fever, according to a description of the product on Taro’s website. The liquid ibuprofen comes in a berry flavor.

Strides Pharma initiated the recall on March 2 after receiving complaints that the bottles contained”a gel-like mass and black particles.” The medication was distributed nationwide, the FDA said in its notice.

The FDA classified this as a Class II recall, which is when exposure to a product can create “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,” according to the agency’s website.

The recall number for the product is D-0390-2026.
