Clintons set to testify in House committee’s Epstein investigation after contempt threat

    February 3, 2026 / 12:50 PM EST / CBS News

Washington — Bill and Hillary Clinton agreed to the House Oversight Committee’s terms to testify as part of the panel’s investigation into Jeffrey Epstein, a last-minute change of heart for the pair who had been defiant as they faced a contempt of Congress vote, the panel’s chairman said Tuesday.

Hillary Clinton will appear for a deposition on Feb. 26, while the former president will appear on Feb. 27, the committee said.

“Once it became clear that we would hold them in contempt, the Clintons completely caved and will appear for transcribed, filmed depositions this month,” Republican Rep. James Comer of Kentucky said in a statement.

In a letter to the committee, the Clintons asked for a public hearing, saying “we now believe that will best suit our concerns about fairness.”

The House was expected to vote this week on holding the former president and former secretary of state in criminal contempt of Congress, but the plans were abruptly put on hold Monday when the Clintons’ legal team alerted the committee that they would agree to the committee’s terms.

Comer appeared to be caught off guard by the news and said he was seeking clarification on what they were agreeing to. The House Rules Committee then postponed consideration of the contempt resolutions.

Over the weekend, the Clintons’ legal team proposed that Bill Clinton would sit for a four-hour transcribed interview in New York City that should be restricted to matters related to the investigations into Epstein. Hillary Clinton would offer another sworn declaration, but if the committee required her in-person appearance, it should follow the same terms as her husband’s testimony, the lawyers said.

Comer rejected the offer, calling it “unreasonable.”

That led to Monday night’s email from the Clintons’ legal team, saying the pair “accept the terms of your letter and will appear for depositions on mutually agreeable dates.”

The acceptance marks a stark turn for the Clintons, who had argued the House Oversight Committee’s subpoenas seeking their testimony were “invalid and legally unenforceable.”

“Every person has to decide when they have seen or had enough and are ready to fight for this country, its principles and its people, no matter the consequences,” the Clintons said in a letter to the committee in January as they refused to appear for depositions. “For us, now is that time.”

Iranian gunboats attempted to halt US oil tanker in Strait of Hormuz: Report | Fox News

By Anders Hagstrom | Fox News
    Published February 3, 2026 12:28pm EST

Six Iranian gunboats unsuccessfully attempted to halt a U.S.-flagged oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, The Wall Street Journal reported.

The security firm Vanguard Tech told its clients on Tuesday that the Iranian vessels were armed with .50-caliber guns, and they ordered the oil tanker to turn off its engines and prepare to be boarded. Instead, the tanker sped up and was ultimately escorted to safety by a U.S. Navy vessel, according to the Journal.

The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.

The incident comes as the U.S. continues to ramp up its military presence surrounding Iran, with President Donald Trump describing an “armada” arrayed in the area.

Iran’s regime has vowed that any military strike on its territory would ignite a regional conflict, even as senior Iranian officials signaled a willingness to negotiate with the U.S.

U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff is expected to arrive in Israel on Tuesday for meetings with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, according to Axios. The publication also reported that Witkoff will meet Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Istanbul on Friday.

The talks in Israel are expected to focus on Iran, following Zamir’s weekend visit to Washington, where he held a series of meetings with U.S. defense officials on the Islamic Republic.

Trump said on Saturday he believes Iran is negotiating “seriously” with the U.S., stressing that he hopes an “acceptable” deal can be brokered.

When asked by a reporter aboard Air Force One whether he had decided on a strike against Iran, Trump responded, “I certainly can’t tell you that.”

“But we do have very big, powerful ships heading in that direction,” he added. “I hope they negotiate something that’s acceptable.”

The president then sidestepped a question about whether Tehran would be emboldened if the U.S. opted not to launch strikes on Iran, saying, “Some people think that. Some people don’t.”

“You could make a negotiated deal that would be satisfactory with no nuclear weapons,” Trump said. “They should do that, but I don’t know that they will. But they are talking to us. Seriously talking to us.”

US carrier shoots down Iranian drone and armed boats threaten US tanker as tensions with Iran escalate

A US aircraft carrier shot down an Iranian drone that “aggressively approached” the ship in the Arabian Sea on Tuesday hours before two gunboats operated by Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps approached a US-flagged tanker in the Strait of Hormuz and threatened to board and seize the ship, according to a US military spokesman.

The two incidents occurred days before US and Iranian officials are due to meet Friday for diplomatic negotiations meant to avert a military clash.

In the first incident on Tuesday, US forces shot down an Iranian drone “as the unmanned aircraft aggressively approached” the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, which was transiting the Arabian Sea about 500 miles from Iran’s southern coast, said Capt. Tim Hawkins, a US Central Command spokesman.

“The Iranian drone continued to fly toward the ship despite de-escalatory measures taken by US forces operating in international waters,” Hawkins said. An F-35C fighter jet from the Lincoln shot down the drone to protect the carrier and its personnel, he said.

“No American service members were harmed during the incident, and no U.S. equipment was damaged,” Hawkins said.

Hours later, two Iranian gunboats approached the M/V Stena Imperative — a chemical tanker operated by Americans flying under the US flag in the Strait of Hormuz — passing the ship three times at high speeds as an Iranian Mohajer drone also flew overhead, said Hawkins. During one of their passes, the Iranians threatened via radio call that they would board and seize the tanker. The tanker was in international waters, Hawkins said.

US military forces operating in the area responded when they learned of the Iranian threats. The USS McFaul destroyer escorted the tanker away from the area along with defensive air support from the US Air Force, Hawkins added. The situation de-escalated as a result.

Hawkins said the Iranian behavior was an example of the Iranians’ “unprofessionalism and aggressive behavior” that increases the risk of miscalculation for vessels operating in the area and said their “harassment” in international waters won’t be tolerated by the US.

The incidents come as President Donald Trump has been weighing a major strike on Iran amid stalled discussions about limiting that nation’s nuclear program and ballistic missile production.

In the last week the US military has accelerated a buildup of military hardware in the Middle East, deploying the Lincoln Carrier Strike Group to the region along with three guided-missile destroyers and the carrier air wing, which includes squadrons of F/A-18E Super Hornet fighters, F-35C Lightning II fighters, and EA-18G Growler electronic warfare jets.

The Navy also has three destroyers — the USS McFaul, the USS Delbert D. Black, and the USS Mitscher — in the region separate from the carrier strike group.

U.S. shoots down Iranian drone that approached USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, military says

    February 3, 2026 / 1:34 PM EST / CBS News

Washington— U.S. forces shot down an Iranian drone that flew towards a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea on Tuesday, U.S. Central Command confirmed.

The military said the drone “aggressively” approached the USS Abraham Lincoln as it was crossing through the Arabian Sea roughly 500 miles from the southern coast of Iran and “unnecessarily maneuvered” toward the ship. U.S . Central Command spokesman Capt. Tim Hawkins said the drone continued to flew toward the carrier “despite de-escalatory measures taken by U.S. forces operating in international waters.”

The drone was shot down by a F-35 fighter jet, and no American service members were harmed in the incident, Hawkins said in a statement.

U.S. Central Command also confirmed that hours later, forces with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps harassed a U.S.-flagged and crewed oil tanker, Stena Imperative, that was moving through the Strait of Hormuz. Hawkins said two Iranian military boats and an Iranian drone approached the vessel at “high speeds and threatened to board and seize the tanker.”

The USS McCaul, a guided-missile destroyer that was in the area, responded to the scene to escort the vessel with air support from the U.S. Air Force, according to Hawkins.

“CENTCOM forces are operating at the highest levels of professionalism and ensuring the safety of U.S. personnel, ships, and aircraft in the Middle East,” he said. “Continued Iranian harassment and threats in international waters and airspace will not be tolerated. Iran’s unnecessary aggression near U.S. forces, regional partners and commercial vessels increases risks of collision, miscalculation, and regional destabilization.”

The U.S. military has in recent days built up its presence near Iran with what President Trump called a “massive armada.” The president told reporters last month that the military was sending ships to the Middle East “just in case,” as his administration watches Iran’s response to massive protests that broke out late last year.

Thousands of protesters are believed to have been killed in response to a crackdown on demonstrations by Iranian authorities.

The president was briefed last month on an array of military options and covert tools that could be used against Iran, two Defense Department officials told CBS News at the time. But U.S. allies in the Middle East are urging the president not to strike Iran and are instead working to broker diplomatic talks, regional officials told CBS News.

Mr. Trump told reporters last week that he has had conversations with Iranian officials and plans to hold more discussions.

“I told them two things: No. 1, no nuclear. And No. 2, stop killing protesters,” he said. “They’re going to have to do something.”

    (Elijah Nouvelage/

The Trump team can’t get its story straight on the president, Gabbard and Fulton County

The Trump administration last week launched an extraordinary new gambit in President Donald Trump’s yearslong effort to sow doubts about the 2020 election: a controversial search of an elections office in Fulton County, Georgia.

But even as it’s undertaken this historic step, it’s struggled mightily to get its story straight.

That’s especially the case with the problematic involvements of both Trump and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard.

Neither of them would seem to have appropriate roles to play in this. And in both cases, the administration downplayed their roles before those claims were later undermined or flatly contradicted.

    Gabbard

The director of national intelligence’s role is the most surprising — and confusing.

A DNI’s job is generally to oversee the agencies in the US intelligence community and to coordinate their efforts. It is not a law enforcement role.

But there was Gabbard on Wednesday near Atlanta, pictured on the scene after FBI agents executed a search warrant. There’s a photo of her standing in a truck loaded with boxes.

And ever since then, the administration has given conflicting accounts about how involved she is.

Asked by CNN on Thursday what Gabbard was doing at an election center in Georgia, Trump said, “She’s working very hard on trying to keep the election safe.”

But in the days that followed, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche repeatedly downplayed her involvement.

“She happened to be present in Atlanta,” Blanche said Thursday.

“I don’t know why the director was there; she is not part of the grand jury investigation,” he told CNN’s Dana Bash on Sunday.

“First of all, she wasn’t at the search; she was in the area where the search took place,” Blanche told Fox News on Monday night. “She’s not part of this investigation.”

The deputy attorney general has repeatedly suggested Gabbard’s presence was more incidental — that she’s working on “election integrity” issues but that she isn’t playing a more specific role in this investigation.

But that’s difficult to square with what we learned Monday.

CNN confirmed that Gabbard wasn’t just on the scene, but she actually put Trump on the phone with FBI agents. That’s a highly unorthodox move that exacerbates questions about political influence in an investigation that Trump has made abundantly clear is of great personal interest. (The news of the phone call was first reported by The New York Times.)

Gabbard in a letter released Monday night confirmed she had accompanied top FBI agents at Trump’s request and facilitated the call — while claiming the conversation included no questions or directives from Trump or her.

The letter came in response to an inquiry about the situation from the top Democrats on the House and Senate intelligence committees.

“My presence was requested by the President and executed under my broad statutory authority to coordinate, integrate, and analyze intelligence related to election security, including counterintelligence (CI), foreign and other malign influences and cybersecurity,” Gabbard said in the letter.

Despite Blanche’s insistence earlier in the evening that Gabbard “wasn’t at the search,” the DNI said she “accompanied” top FBI officials “in observing FBI personnel executing that search warrant.”

And despite Blanche’s repeated claims that she’s not “part of” the investigation, it’s pretty clear she’s playing a significant role — by both her own and Trump’s accounts.

    Trump

Gabbard’s letter Monday night also adds to the confusing signals about Trump’s even-more-problematic role — which Blanche also downplayed during his interview Sunday with Bash.

After Trump said Thursday, “You’re going to see some interesting things happening” in Fulton County, Blanche encouraged people not to read too much into that.

“Well, just because he said that doesn’t mean that he’s involved,” Blanche told Bash. “I don’t believe he was involved.”

When Bash pressed him on whether Trump had been at least been briefed, Blanche responded: “I don’t know. I’m not around when the president’s briefed or not briefed.”

He called the investigation “tightly held, as it must be under the law.”

“It’s a grand jury investigation, and that’s how we’re proceeding,” Blanche said.

It’s now clear that however tightly the investigation is held, Trump has wormed his way in.

Gabbard has now stated explicitly that Trump directed her to be present at the search, and she’s confirmed that he spoke with FBI agents working on the case.

After it was reported Monday that Gabbard put Trump on the phone with the agents, Blanche suggested on Fox News that it was normal for the president to speak with law enforcement.

“The president talks to law enforcement all week long,” Blanche said. “The fact that he talked with agents working hard doesn’t surprise me, and actually I love it. It’s great.”

(The president might talk to law enforcement frequently. But that takes on a new meaning given these agents are working on a highly politically sensitive case — not to mention Trump’s history of transparently leaning on law enforcement to give him the outcomes he wants.)

So Trump has gone from supposedly not being “involved” to having some pretty dicey actions confirmed, all in the span of a few days — a lot like his director of national intelligence.
