President Donald Trump on Sunday called Washington, D.C., council member Janeese Lewis George a “communist” and vowed to block policies he said would undermine public safety and reverse his administration’s efforts to reduce crime in the nation’s capital.
In a lengthy post on Truth Social, Trump said he plans to meet with Lewis George and argued Washington has become safer under his administration. He also pledged to oppose any agenda he said would weaken immigration enforcement, policing or the city’s criminal justice system.
“Janeese Lewis George, the Communist who is almost certainly going to be elected Mayor of Washington, D.C., has stated that she wants to empty the prisons, make D.C. a Sanctuary City, oppose ICE, welcome Criminal Illegal Aliens back into our beloved Capital, resist Anti-Crime Crackdowns, Defund the Police, continue and expand Cashless Bail, and so many other Capital destroying ‘things,’” the president wrote on Truth Social.

“In the end, it will never work out, nor will I let it even have a chance because I have worked too hard to make Washington, D.C., the Envy of the World, with almost No Crime, and a Beautification process that has been second to none,” Trump continued. “I will meet with Janeese Lewis George, but must forewarn everyone that Washington, D.C., is again a Safe and Prestigious Community.
“Many people, including myself, have worked long and hard to get it there, and we will not let it be destroyed by a Communist adherent who has no intention to, MAKE WASHINGTON GREAT AGAIN!” he added.
Lewis George, a self-described Democratic socialist and member of the District of Columbia Council, defeated Kenyan McDuffie and five other candidates in the Democratic mayoral primary earlier this month, positioning her to succeed Mayor Muriel Bowser in a city where Democrats overwhelmingly dominate general elections.

Lewis George has sharply criticized Trump’s deployment of the National Guard and expanded federal law enforcement presence in Washington. Following the president’s decision to deploy the Guard last year, she called the move “a direct attack” on the city’s residents and accused Trump of weaponizing the Home Rule Act.
During the mayoral campaign, Lewis George argued that “federal troops” and “masked ICE agents” posed a greater threat to young Washington residents than juvenile crime and opposed relying on curfews and federal enforcement, instead advocating expanded youth programs and other community investments.

The $1.7 million “ozone nanobubbler” being used in an effort to make the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool water crystal clear has a unique ability to shoot 500 million microscopic bubbles into every teaspoon of water. The injected oxygen is supposed to oxidize — or, unscientifically speaking, smash through — algae, bacteria and other chemicals.
The Trump administration has touted the technology as “state of the art.” At the onset of the project, the administration dispatched a small company based in Brookfield, Ohio — one of the only in the country with this type of technology — to lead the high-profile, high-stakes gambit to see whether the technology could work on the 6.5 million-gallon landmark that for decades has evaded cleanliness. Only five years old, the technology has never been formally used or researched on a pool.
As questions mount over President Donald Trump’s broader renovation project — which has been overcome by other problems, including a peeling bottom and allegations of vandalism — Greenwater Services, the company in charge of the pool’s water quality, has been thrust into the national spotlight. The company has recently taken on a crisis communications firm to help manage the unfamiliar political waters while it attempts to focus on the pool’s actual water.
Chas Antinone, president and chief operating officer, had a one-word answer for CNN when asked whether the company’s part of the project had gone according to plan: “Yes.”
“I’ve got no political affiliation in this thing whatsoever either way. And I don’t really care about that part,” Antinone said. “Our job was to come here and bring a technology that we think can keep the Reflecting Pool looking clean and reflect the way it is supposed to.”
A review of campaign finance reports, both federal and in Ohio, showed no contributions made by Antinone.
But the company and its no-bid contract have been dragged into a political morass as algae returned for a time to the pool, Trump campaign donations by the owner have come to light, and the pool has become a symbol of America’s divide and what some see as the president’s failures.
And questions remain about whether the new technology will work long term, with no timeline set by the Department of Interior for the more extensive repairs to decades-old pipes that are necessary to keep the technology running.
Joe Trusty, who is the editor of Pool Magazine and has a background in pool service and construction, said the nanobubbler has been “a tremendous buzzword around our industry.”
“It’s not surprising to me that they were brought into the conversation, nor is it surprising to me that they implemented it,” he said. “Whether or not it is going to be able to be effective in as large a body of water and as shallow a body of water such as the Reflecting Pool remains to be seen.”
Greenwater Services walked CNN through a detailed timeline of its work with the Trump administration. That accounting revealed that some accommodations were needed to meet the president’s demands to have the pool refurbished by the July Fourth celebrations marking America’s 250th birthday.
From the get-go, the company had to be nimble.
The permanent ozone nannobubbler unit had not yet been fully fabricated in Ohio for the job, and yet the pool was being refilled with water. So, the company brought in temporary equipment to get the system running before the permanent structure was finished.
Four stand-alone mobile machines, which could be seen with the naked eye, were put in the Reflecting Pool on June 6, two days after the pool was refilled with water. The units, which work differently from the permanent ones, made small white plumes of bubbles as nozzles shot nanobubbles into the water. The company said the four machines were operating at the same amount of power that the permanent system would have had.
At that point the water was clear; everything was working well, a spokesperson said.
However, on June 12, a source close to the project said the company was asked by the National Park Service to remove the temporary structures. They were not given a reason. The four units were taken offline and off-site by the company. The algae bloom appeared, according to a person close to the project and video images of the pool captured that afternoon by a CNN camera.
Greenwater Services would not comment on the time gap when the temporary systems were removed. The Interior Department and White House did not respond to CNN’s questions about why the call was made to take the machines out of the water. The New York Times first reported on the removal of the temporary systems.
During that 24-hour period, the Trump administration hosted a high-profile Ultimate Fighting Championship photo op on the National Mall.
The next day, the company reinstalled the temporary machines.
As the four temporary units continued to run, the permanent unit arrived on June 16 and installation began. On June 25, the temporary units were removed, and the permanent system began operating on its own, according to the company.
“What I think everyone learned is that when the system is allowed to run, it cleans the water and keeps it clean,” Erin Kramer, a spokesperson for the company, told CNN.
The permanent ozone nanobubbler technology, unlike the temporary units, is not in the Reflecting Pool itself. The technology is instead housed in a small pump house, in the US Park Police stables just off the Reflecting Pool.
CNN exclusively obtained photos of last week’s installation of the technology in the pump house with the National Park Service, showing the high-tech system that is typically kept behind closed doors.
The water, which the Interior Department confirmed is pulled from municipal water, comes in and is filtered again. This is when Greenwater Service’s technology steps in.
An oxygen concentrator pulls air in and then sends an electrical current that breaks up that O2 into pure oxygen molecules to form “ozone.” That ozone is then injected into the master water pipe, through a series of patented nozzles with pressure.
That master pipe splits into numerous preexisting smaller pipes that run around the exterior of the Reflecting Pool, providing inputs for water to enter.
The Interior Department has previously noted the need to repair and potentially replace thousands of feet of pipes that have been in disrepair for several years.
The ozone nanobubbler relies on at least some of the pipes being viable.
Antinone said a number of the pipes are viable but was unsure how many are up and running. It is his understanding that the National Park Service intends to test to see which ones are working, he said.
The Interior Department has not responded to multiple questions about the status of the pipes and the plan for broader repair.
Antinone said the piping system would be one of the first things to look at should the algae return.
The ozone nanobubbler technology is very new, but industry experts say it is promising.
Heather Raymond, the water quality director for the Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences, has tested and researched Greenwater Service’s technology for years.
One of the key factors that make it so powerful, Raymond said, is the ability for the ozone in the powerful algae-busting bubbles to stay in the water, reacting with the water, potentially for days.
Previous versions of the technology injected the bubbles into water, where they would then rise to the surface, losing power and effectiveness.
Raymond said the new technology carries a powerful “one-two punch” because it creates a microsystem for battling bacteria that is more biologically active.
“In addition to directly oxidizing the chemicals, they promote the growth of these bacteria that eat the chemicals.”
Raymond said her studies show an effectiveness rate in the 90th percentile for the ozone nanobubbler, recognizing it as both clean and green.
Raymond was not involved in the Reflecting Pool project and said her studies have not been funded by Greenwater Services.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has done independent research on the technology. In research published in 2020, the federal agency said the technology effectively remediates harmful algal blooms.
Greenwater Services has never used its technology on a pool, only for projects in waterways, such as the Tijuana River, Ohio’s Lake Newport and Florida’s Port Mayaca.
Raymond said, ideally, the nanobubbler technology could work best by getting ahead of any algae, when installed during cooler months, not during the summer when the conditions for algae — heat and sunlight — are prime.
“If you had all the time in the world, you should launch this fall or winter,” she said.
But the company was under a tight deadline to make the pool clear by July.
Greenwater Services attempted to portray the timeline, and the warm, muggy DC weather they were up against as a positive.
“If we had put this in here and there’s no algae, we wouldn’t have learned anything,” Antinone said. “The whole goal here is to make the process better, so every time we do something, we should learn a little bit.”
Like Virginia-based Atlantic Industrial Coatings, the company enlisted to resurface the pool bottom with a blue material, Greenwater Services was allowed to bypass a competitive-bidding process that is typically done for government contracts. Greenwater was awarded a no-bid contract in April.
The company’s co-owner, J.J. Cafaro, is a longtime supporter and donor to Trump and lives near his Mar-a-Lago club in South Florida. Cafaro pleaded guilty in 2001 to conspiracy to bribe Rep. James Traficant Jr., an Ohio Democrat.
“The White House was not involved in the selection process for any contract and did not weigh in on the companies selected. Full stop,” an Interior Department spokesperson said in a statement. “These companies were selected because they had the expertise, workforce and materials needed to complete such a huge project in the timeline required to celebrate our nation’s 250th.”
The White House said in a statement that it “did not play any role in the selection process.”
Greenwater Services has sought to distance Cafaro from its daily operations.
“He is an Ohio-based businessman who invested in the Ohio-based company after the owners showed him research done on local Ohio bodies of water,” a spokesperson said. “He has no involvement in the day-to-day operations.”
CNN reached out to Cafaro but did not receive an immediate response.
Earlier this month, Cafaro defended his company’s technology to a local Ohio newspaper, the Vindicator, saying that he believes the system is working and that much of the public scrutiny over the Reflecting Pool is from “people who don’t seem to like Trump.”
Cafaro told the newspaper he would “never” talk to the president about his company’s work with the Reflecting Pool.
“You don’t do things to put friends in awkward positions,” he was quoted as saying.
Employees of Greenwater Solutions have been at the pool on a near daily basis since early June. They anticipate remaining through the July Fourth holiday, at least. The company tests the water daily, Antinone said.
The next step is to give time to see how the permanent machine operates on its own.
CNN spoke to the company on Friday, just one day after it went online without the support of the temporary units.
“I will tell you, the water today continues to look good, and we’ll continue to test it and see how that works,” Antinone said.
If algae and the green-hued water returns, Antinone said the company has the capability to bring in more units to the pump house to amp up the system. Additionally, he suggested there are many other options for mitigation. Some spot treatments — potentially with temporary machines — could also be used, he said.
“We think right now, we treated it — it looks good,” he said Friday while adding, “but you know, it’s going to be 100 degrees next week.”

The time has come for country music superstar Alan Jackson to hang up his signature Stetson hat.
The genre traditionalist from Newnan, Georgia, whose career kicked off in the 1980s and exploded shortly thereafter in the oft-cited ’90s country wave with heartfelt songs for the working man who’d rather be drinking, or fishing, or ideally both, has sold over 60 million records across his storied career. And on Saturday night at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, he brought his touring career to an end.
The event titled “Last Call: One More for the Road — The Finale” was a triumphant swan song for the performer, a celebration of his life and career with some help from the artists he directly inspired.
Nashville’s all-stars came out in droves
It was a concert in two movements.
The first two hours were made up of a marathon run of Jackson covers from some of the biggest names in contemporary country. And each performer had a personal story to share. Carrie Underwood sang “Everything I Love” after revealing that Jackson was her first ever concert, in 1994 at the Tulsa State Fair. Thomas Rhett warmed up the crowd with “Small Town Southern Man,” an appropriate choice for a singer currently living the song’s lyrics — he’s a father to four girls.
The Texas-born and bred Miranda Lambert performed “Dallas.” Lainey Wilson got the crowd moving with “Tall, Tall Trees.”
“It’s almost impossible to pick a favorite Alan Jackson song … but I had to try,” said Luke Combs before launching into “Hard Hat and a Hammer.”
Each performer played with Jackson’s backing band, save for Eric Church, who opted to cover “Someday” with just his voice and an acoustic guitar.
It was an All-Star night for one of country music’s most colossal voices. Other guest performers included Luke Bryan, Riley Green, Cody Johnson, Little Big Town, Jake Owen, Jon Pardi, Lee Ann Womack and a slew of super talented members of Jackson’s own family: Adam Wright, Big City Brian Wright and Carlisle Wright.
Five years ago, the 67-year-old music giant Jackson shared that he has a degenerative nerve condition that affects his balance called Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, which he was first diagnosed with a decade prior. He said it was a genetic condition, and its effects on his ability to walk and perform had become more noticeable. One dollar of every ticket sold on Saturday night the CMT Research Foundation, an organization that funds research to find a cure for Charcot-Marie-Tooth.
When it was time for Jackson to hit the stage after 9:35 p.m. — after a storm delay of about an hour — he was met with ear-piercing cheers. The singer appeared stiff as he walked to his microphone, but once he picked up his guitar for the opener “Gone Country,” he was immediately back in action with that smoky baritone and timeless songs, though strumming was kept to a minimum.
“It’s overwhelming,” he addressed the crowd before assuring them he would not spend too much time on “that last show stuff … I’m not dead!”
A night to remember
The Country Music Hall of Famer ran through his best-known hits with real ferocity: “I Don’t Even Know Your Name” arrived quickly, as did “Livin’ on Love,” “Summertime Blues” and the moody “Midnight in Montgomery,” as the music videos for each played on a giant screen behind them.
He made it a point to walk from side to side of the stage, greeting each section while championing his band and the power of “real country music.”
“If anyone has lived the American dream,” he said later, while seated on a stool, “It’s me.”
Anecdotes flowed from there. He talked about writing “I’d Love You All Over Again” for his wife on their 10th wedding anniversary and how the radio from “Chasin’ that Neon Rainbow” is currently in the Country Music Hall of Fame museum. And he mentioned that “Drive (For Daddy Gene” was written after his father died.
An hour into his set, Jackson teased the audience by saying he needed some help for the next song. Out emerged George Strait for their collaborations “Designated Drink” and “Murder on Music Row.”
Then came an incredible run of hits: “Little Bitty,” “Country Boy,” “Good Time” and “Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)” among them, the latter written and recorded following the Sept. 11 terror attacks.
Blockbuster singles followed: “Don’t Rock the Jukebox,” “Remember When,” and “It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere,” the latter recording famously featuring the late “Margaritaville” singer Jimmy Buffett.
Fireworks were launched into the sky for “Chattahoochee.”
Alan Jackson’s story continues
Just because this is the end of Jackson’s touring career doesn’t mean it is the end of his music career. On Thursday, two days before the final concert blowout, Jackson released a country cover of Orleans’ “Still the One,” to celebrate his 50-year relationship with wife and high school sweetheart Denise Jackson. She was a cheerleader practicing a dance routine to the soft rock classic; he was instantly smitten.
Jackson told CBS “Sunday Morning in 2015 that he sings “songs about life and love and heartache and drinking and dancing and having a good time.”
“All these little things that have always been in my mind when I think about country music,” he continued. “Basically just what makes up life, you know, what you go through.”
For those who missed Jackson’s final bow, the show will be released later in the year as an NBC concert special. But for those who were in the stadium — in the middle of a huge storm — it was an unrepeatable and unmistakable night.

A long and dangerous heat wave will blast a large swath of the United States this week, the National Weather Service said, with temperatures rising ahead of the July Fourth holiday and feeling even hotter because of the high humidity that’s arriving with it.
Several days of high temperatures will settle in across the lower Great Lakes, the mid-Atlantic and the Mississippi and Ohio River valleys, the weather service said.
A number of big cities could see their highest temperatures of the year so far as they host World Cup matches.
Feeling the heat will be the East Coast cities of New York, Philadelphia, Washington and Baltimore and Midwestern and Great Lakes cities including Chicago, St. Louis and Detroit. Southern cities including Dallas, Little Rock, Arkansas, and Memphis, Tennessee, will also see high temperatures.
High heat will last into next weekend across the Great Plains, southeast and mid-Atlantic, the weather service said.
It’s the first widespread heat wave of the summer, impacting more than half of the country, forecasters said. The heat wave is expanding across the central and eastern U.S., while the Four Corners remain under dangerous fire weather conditions. At the same time, severe thunderstorms continue across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest, with flooding concerns stretching from the Rockies into the Mid-Atlantic.
Temperatures will reach well into the 90s and low 100 degrees Fahrenheit (mid to high 30s Celsius), the weather service said. High humidity will lead to heat indices of 100 to 110 degrees F (40 C to 43 C), and as high as 115 F (46 C). Nightly lows in the 70s F (21 to 26 C) won’t provide much relief, the weather service said.

The heat index, which factors in humidity and is included on many weather forecasts, provides a sense of how hot it really feels — and what’s dangerous for prolonged exposure or strenuous activity.
Parts of the U.S., especially Phoenix, Las Vegas, central Texas, and much of the southwest, were already experiencing temperatures around 100 F.
During extreme temperatures, limit outdoor activity, stay hydrated and ensure access to air-conditioning and other cooling areas, the weather service said. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says heat can impact anyone. Signs of overheating include muscle cramping, dizziness, unusually heavy sweating, shortness of breath, headaches, weakness and nausea.
While large portions of the U.S. confront high temperatures, much of the West remains unusually cool, with high temperatures running 20-35 degrees below average across portions of the Northwest and northern Rockies, according to weather reports.
Europe has been sizzling for days, with the temperature hitting a record 106 degrees Fahrenheit in Germany on Saturday, the AFP reported. Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Denmark and France have also been facing high temperatures. In France, dozens of drowning deaths were recorded this month as swimmers turned to the water for relief from the heat.

The following is the transcript of an interview with Sen. Tim Kaine, Democrat of Virginia, that aired on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan” on June 28, 2026.
MARGARET BRENNAN: We turn now to Virginia Democratic Senator Tim Kaine, who joins us from Brussels. Good morning to you, Senator.
SENATOR TIM KAINE: Great to be with you, Margaret. Thanks.
MARGARET BRENNAN: Because you are in Europe, I want to ask you about exactly what is going on with the U.S. Army Europe General Chris Donahue. We know he was ordered by Secretary Hegseth to turn in his retirement papers, he’s going to relinquish command July 2, relinquish NATO command July 9. Do you have any indication why this very well-respected general is getting pushed out the door?
SEN. KAINE: Margaret, I am in Europe with a bipartisan delegation of senators visiting NATO allies and our troops, talking primarily about NATO summit next week and support for Ukraine. I will say on General Donahue, a lot of questions and very few answers. He was very well regarded in the Armed Services Committee, where I sit, both sides of the aisle thought really highly of him, and so the news that he was being ushered out caught us all by surprise, and we don’t yet have good answers from the Pentagon.
MARGARET BRENNAN: Well, it’s part of a bigger question as to the changes Secretary Hegseth is making at the Pentagon. Retired Admiral Bill McRaven, people know him from commanding the raid to take out Osama bin Laden. He wrote a piece in The Atlantic, raising concerns about the exit and the firing of at least 12 other high-ranking military officials. He explained officers need to be “brutally candid” in order to give good advice. He said “these recent firings raise a real risk senior officers will be overly cautious about providing their best advice, and therefore the chance for military miscalculation will grow dramatically.” How concerned are you? Can Congress intervene and do anything here?
SEN. KAINE: Well, I don’t think that concern is misplaced. We’re worried about the same thing. Are you- are you pushing out the truth tellers to surround yourself by yes-men, and in particular, it looks like the secretary is coming down hardest- coming down hardest on the Army. He served in the Army, he felt like he wasn’t treated well by the Army, that’s a grudge he’s carried that he’s described publicly. And so, when you see Army officers forced out, you got to wonder, is this a personal thing, or is it really what’s best for the nation? So we are working on the defense bill right now. We’ve- we voted it out of the Senate Armed Services Committee. There’s nothing in the bill at this point that would address this situation, but when we bring it up on the floor, I think by then, we’ll have some of our questions answered, and if we need to go farther to put some guardrails in place, you’ll probably find bipartisan support to do that.
MARGARET BRENNAN: What are you hearing from your NATO partners there about the American plans to reduce the presence in Europe?
SEN. KAINE: So the- it would be difficult to reduce the presence in Europe, based upon some NDAA provisions that we have put in place that kind of set a floor in terms of U.S. troop strength. And here’s the good news, Margaret, both because of President Trump, but also, frankly, because the actions of Vladimir Putin, European nations are really stepping up their investment in their collective defense. They see the need to do it, and they understand that the United States is right there with them. There’s some political churn, no doubt about it. European nations are not only concerned about rhetoric coming out of the White House, they see a chaotic tariff policy as hurting their economies, but they also see the U.S. continuing to make sizable investments in European defense, troop presence. The Senate version of the Armed Services bill that we just passed has sizable investments for the defense of Ukraine, and I think you’re going to see some positives coming out of the NATO summit next week. That’s my expectation.
MARGARET BRENNAN: So, you just mentioned the defense bill that is so significant, and we looked, and you said that for the first time in your 13 years on the committee, you voted against it. I understand you have objections to the Iran war, but given the significant military community you have in Virginia, and the need the military says it has, how can you defend that?
SEN. KAINE: Margaret, it was one of the hardest votes I’ve cast in 13 years in the Senate, but here was the reason. President Trump is seeking at least a 40% increase in the defense budget in one year. He hasn’t really told us where that money is coming out of. Is it coming out of education? Is it coming out of health care? And to vote for that kind of an increase without knowing where we’re going to pull the money from, in the middle of a war that I think is illegal, unnecessary, and foolish, and also to support that kind of an increase without guardrails about how the money is spent, I just couldn’t do it. Part of protecting our Virginia troops and going to bat for them is making sure that they’re- that when we use troops, especially when we go to war, we do it the right way, not the wrong way. Our troops have deployed into the Middle East often over the last 25 years, and an illegal war for kind of a suspect rationale- that’s no way to treat our troops.
MARGARET BRENNAN: Well, I need to talk to you about more in regard to this, but I have to take a commercial break. So please stay with us, if you would. Senator Kaine, there in Brussels.

MARGARET BRENNAN: Welcome back to Face the Nation. We return to our conversation with Virginia Democratic Senator Tim Kaine. Senator, I want to ask you a little bit about what’s happening here at home. There were three far-left candidates handpicked by New York City Mayor Mamdani, who won last week over more centrist candidates. Some are looking at that and saying the reach of the left wing of your party seems to be expanding, and here is what President Trump said. Take a listen.

DONALD TRUMP: It’s becoming a communist party. These are not social democrats, these are hardcore godless communists. They’re godless communists. All communists are godless. They don’t believe in God. This is the most serious threat to our country since its existence.

MARGARET BRENNAN: What do you make of that attack here? And do you have concerns that the progressive platform of some members of the party will make it more difficult to win in other parts of the country headed into November?
SEN. KAINE: Margaret, what the president said is just goofy word salad. I’m not an expert on New York House races, I am an expert on Senate races, and we have got Senate candidates all over this country flip- working to flip red seats blue by focusing on the president’s mismanagement of the American economy, families are suffering cost increases because of chaotic tariffs, illegal war and focus on goofy things like ballrooms, arches, and the reflecting pool. And in Virginia, at the house races, I’ve got four Democratic challengers running to flip red seats blue, who are focused on that same kind of cost and affordability agenda that led us to have a landslide win in state races last fall. So, I can’t really explain, you know, what’s on the voters’ minds in New York City congressional races, but I know what’s on Virginians’ minds, and I think I know what’s on Americans’ minds. Let’s focus on the economy and bringing costs down, not foolish wars and chaos.
MARGARET BRENNAN: Well, as Senator Elissa Slotkin of Michigan said, the party needs significant new leadership because the old models are not working, and she pointed a finger at leadership. Leader Jeffries, Leader Schumer, said they need to make room for others who can adapt if they cannot. Do you agree with her assessment?
SEN. KAINE: Well, I don’t know exactly the context in which she was making it. Look, I do think some of these elections can show that there’s a, there’s a desire for new, and it’s a tough environment for incumbents. And that I think works to the Democrats’ advantage in November. Remember, primaries are interesting, but where you really make the difference is not trading out one Democrat for another or one Republican for another. Where you make the difference is flipping a seat from red to blue, and it is a challenging environment for incumbents, but that’s going to work to Democrats’ advantage in November.
MARGARET BRENNAN: So, you will continue to support Chuck Schumer as leader.
SEN. KAINE: Yes, he is. He was one of the best majority leaders we’ve had in a long time, and if he gets the chance, he’s going to be a good majority leader going forward.
MARGARET BRENNAN: Well, just to pick up on something Senator Cassidy said, he was talking about healthcare affordability. Is there any Democratic plan for health care or opportunity to work across the aisle?
SEN. KAINE: There is, and look, Bill has been a good chairman. I agree with him on a lot. We have some disagreements, but he said he’s been a good chairman of the HELP Committee, and we’re working on some affordability issues. For example, we have a bipartisan bill that we’ve enacted some pieces of, but we could do more to rein in pharmaceutical costs by more effective regulation of the PBMs, the pharmacy benefit managers. On the Democratic side, we want to reverse some of the harmful Medicaid cuts that the Republicans put in place a year ago, and we’ve had some interest by some Republicans in that, but reversing those Medicaid cuts and the cuts to SNAP benefits is something that we feel very, very strongly about as Democrats.
MARGARET BRENNAN: Senator Kaine. Thank you for joining us this morning. We’ll have to leave it there.

Kaine says guardrails on Pentagon firings could see bipartisan support in Congress

Washington — Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia said Sunday that following a string of high-level officers exiting the military during the second Trump administration, guardrails on Pentagon firings could see bipartisan support in Congress.
The departure of some senior military officers in recent months has sparked questions about changes at the Pentagon. Retired Admiral Bill McRaven, known for commanding the raid to take out Osama bin Laden, wrote in The Atlantic last week that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s firings “raise a real risk that senior officers will be overly cautious about providing their best advice and, therefore, that the chance for military miscalculation will grow dramatically.”
“I don’t think that concern is misplaced. We’re worried about the same thing,” Kaine responded on “Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.”
Kaine, who is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, questioned whether Hegseth is “pushing out the truth tellers” to surround himself with “yes men.” He added that “it looks like the secretary is coming down hardest on the Army.”

Among the latest high-level officers to exit the military is Gen. Chris Donahue, commander of U.S. Army Europe and Africa, who the Army said is set to “relinquish command” on July 2. CBS news reported last week that Donahue, who is also known for being the last American soldier on the ground in Afghanistan in 2021, had earned the ire of Hegseth and submitted his retirement papers.
Kaine said on Donahue, there are “a lot of questions and very few answers.”
“He was very well regarded in the Armed Services Committee, where I sit. Both sides of the aisle thought really highly of him,” Kaine said. “And so the news that he was being ushered out caught us all by surprise. And we don’t yet have good answers from the Pentagon.”
Kaine noted that Congress is working on the annual defense policy bill, known as the National Defense Authorization Act, which advanced out of the Armed Services Committee earlier this month. In the lower chamber, the House Armed Services Committee adopted a provision for its version of the defense policy bill that would require Pentagon leaders to inform Congress why senior military officials were fired within five days. Kaine said in the Senate’s legislation, there’s “nothing in the bill at this point that would address this situation.”
“But when we bring it up on the floor, I think by then we’ll have some of our questions answered,” Kaine said. “And if we need to go farther to put some guardrails in place, you’ll probably find bipartisan support to do that.”
Donahue’s exit sparked some pushback from across the aisle, like from GOP Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who called it “yet another unforced error from a Secretary leading the Pentagon with bro-culture bravado rather than restraint, humility and careful stewardship of the finest fighting force in the world.”
“His paranoid micromanagement of senior military leaders and promotion lists is pure insecurity dressed up as reform,” Tillis wrote on X. “He is more interested in purging people he perceives as insufficiently loyal than empowering proven patriots who can actually lead.”
