(CBS News)

Spencer Pratt compares his fledgling political career to Obama’s national rise: “He had no experience running the whole entire country”

    May 7, 2026 / 7:35 PM EDT / CBS News

In an exclusive interview, reality television star turned Los Angeles mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt compared his lack of political experience to where former President Barack Obama was when he first came on the national scene.

“I mean, look at Obama,” the Republican told CBS News correspondent Adam Yamaguchi when asked if he has what it takes to lead the second-largest city in the nation. “He was a community organizer. I’ve won two community advocate awards…Nobody thought, ‘Why can Obama become a senator and then the president?’ He had no experience running the whole entire country, which is way bigger than L.A.”

Pratt, a Southern California native known for playing a sort of villain role on the popular mid-2000s reality show “The Hills,” has said he was compelled to launch his unlikely mayoral run after his home was destroyed in last year’s devastating L.A. wildfires. Incumbent L.A. Mayor Karen Bass, who faced off against Pratt in a debate Wednesday, has taken significant criticism for her response to the fires.

The mayor’s race will take place on June 2. If no candidate receives a majority of the vote, then the two leading candidates will advance to a Nov. 3 runoff.

Pratt, despite running in a city that has not elected a Republican mayor since 2001, is confident in his chances next month.

“All my supporters in Los Angeles are Democrats. Everyone I know, my family, are all Democrats,” Pratt claims.

“I’m confident I’m probably going to win with 51% on June 2 because I don’t do a political message,” he added. “I don’t do national politics. I don’t do tribal politics. I don’t talk about other states. I’m localized. I just want to fix our streets, get the lights on. I want people to feel safe.”

Watch Adam Yamaguchi’s interview with Spencer Pratt on “CBS Mornings” on CBS and Paramount+ on Friday, May 8.

DOJ taunts media after Trump scores win in battleground-state ballot fight

Judge denied Fulton County’s bid to reclaim more than 600 boxes of election records seized by the FBI in January

Leavitt calls out media’s Fulton County outrage after years of pushing Russia interference claims

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt hit back at media outlets questioning the FBI seizing ballots and other documents related to the 2020 election in Fulton County, Georgia.

The Department of Justice took aim at reporters it viewed as biased on social media on Wednesday after a federal judge sided with the government in a dispute over 2020 ballots and election materials it seized in Fulton County, Georgia, in January.

“Wrong again, MacFarlane,” a DOJ communications account wrote in an X post, targeting a MeidasTouch journalist who had speculated the department’s arguments would fail to persuade the judge.

Judge J.P. Boulee had found in a 68-page order that Fulton County did not prove its rights were violated when the FBI seized more than 600 boxes of election records. Boulee, a Trump appointee, denied county officials’ request that the boxes be returned, handing the Trump administration a win in its broader fight to investigate the 2020 election and prompting DOJ to taunt media skeptics online.

“Sorry for your loss, Anna,” the DOJ social media account wrote in a separate post about a Lawfare editor.

Boulee’s decision marked a win for the DOJ in its nationwide effort to investigate past elections in key battlegrounds that also include Arizona and Michigan, as Trump maintains that the 2020 election was tainted by widespread fraud and aggressively pushes for tighter election security measures ahead of the midterms.

The FBI had seized the boxes, which included 2020 ballots, from the Fulton County Election Hub and Operation Center after obtaining a court-approved search warrant. An underlying affidavit revealed the bureau was probing allegations of ballot irregularities and record-keeping failures in Georgia, a state Trump lost by a razor-thin margin to President Joe Biden that became ground zero for Trump’s election fraud claims in the aftermath of 2020.

Democrats have widely criticized the investigation, including Sen. Jon Ossoff, D-Ga., who called it a continuation of a “sore loser’s crusade” upon learning of the probe.

Fulton County Board of Commissioners chairman Robb Pitts, who is named in the litigation over the box seizure, previously called the investigation “yet another act of outrageous federal overreach designed to intimidate and to chill participation in elections…. I will always stand up for our elections workers and for the truth.”

NAACP ASKS JUDGE TO LIMIT HOW FEDS USE GEORGIA VOTER DATA SEIZED BY FBI

Pitts and other Fulton County officials had argued the box seizures were unlawful and that the government showed “callous disregard” for the county’s constitutional rights. But Boulee rejected those claims while still acknowledging that the underlying affidavit was flawed and contained “troubling” statements.

“While the Affidavit was certainly far from perfect, this is not a situation where an officer left out all the facts that might undermine probable cause or where an officer intentionally lied,” Boulee wrote, adding that he “cannot say that the Affidavit was so deficient that its shortcomings rise to the ‘high[] threshold’ of callous disregard.”

Boulee relied in his decision on the fact that the investigation was still in an early phase and emphasized that federal authorities had obtained a valid warrant supported by an affidavit. The affidavit outlined allegations related to missing ballot images, inconsistent recount totals and chain-of-custody problems, among other potential issues.

In response to Boulee’s order, Pitts said in a statement provided to Fox News Digital that he agreed with the judge’s assessment that the affidavit was “defective” and “problematic.”

“But I strongly disagree with the judge’s denial of Fulton County’s request for the FBI to return the election records it wrongly seized on January 28,” Pitts said, adding that county officials would “continue, as always, to stand by our election workers and the voters of Fulton County. We intend to vigorously pursue all available legal options.”

A powerful Virginia Democratic lawmaker’s online jab at President Donald Trump that “no one is above the law” is coming back to haunt her after her office and a business she co-owns were raided by the FBI Wednesday.

In 2023, she posted that then-former President “Donald Trump just learned no is above the law!”

Now, her post is garnering new attention following the news of the FBI raids, with X users pointing the finger back at her.

Popular conservative account Libs of TikTok posted, “Louise Lucas just learned no one is above the law!”

A TALE OF TWO INDICTMENTS: TOP DEMS SAY ‘NO ONE IS ABOVE THE LAW’ ON TRUMP, BUT DECRY COMEY CASE

Virginia Democratic state Sen. L. Louise Lucas’ Portsmouth office was raided by the FBI on Wednesday.(Minh Connors/Getty Images; Fox News)

Caroline Wren, a political operative and former Trump fundraiser, referenced another post of Lucas’ from 2022, in which the Democrat wrote, “I want to see voters showing the kind of overwhelming numbers at the polls that the FBI showed today at Mar a Lago!” Wren wrote, “This aged well.”

Lucas’ office and weed dispensary business were raided Wednesday as part of a court-authorized federal corruption and illegal marijuana sale probe, federal law enforcement sources told Fox News. In total, 10 locations associated with Lucas were raided by the FBI.

This, too, drew mockery from Lucas’ critics, who pointed to her “Ten f—– one” slogan, referring to Virginia’s recently passed redistricting map that favors Democrats in 10 of the state’s congressional districts, likely leaving only one Republican district.

Former Virginia legislator Nick Freitas posted, “@SenLouiseLucas: ‘10 to f-ing 1’ FBI: ‘How about 10 to f-ing life.’”

Arlington County GOP Chair Matthew Hurtt posted on X, “Louise Lucas asked [a] Fox News reporter where else the FBI was raiding. Apparently, 10 locations. There’s a TEN F—IN’ ONE joke in there somewhere.”

Talk radio host Erick Erickson, meanwhile, predicted that “no wagons will be circled for Louise Lucas because the VA Dems have known for a while.”

DHS UNLOADS ON ‘SANCTUARY CALAMITY’ VIRGINIA AFTER ILLEGAL ALIEN ACCUSED OF HEINOUS CRIME RELEASED: ‘SICKO’

FBI agents conducted a raid at the office of Virginia Sen. L. Louise Lucas in Portsmouth, Virginia, according to federal law enforcement sources.(Fox News)

Lucas was not universally reviled in response to the raids. Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas, who bears no relation to the Virginia Democrat, posted on his personal X account, “They need to leave Louise Lucas alone.”

Virginia House Speaker Don Scott, a Democrat, also released a statement on Wednesday in which he said he is “deeply concerned by today’s FBI raid.”

“Given the politicization of this administration — an FBI led by Kash Patel and a Justice Department run by President Donald Trump’s former personal attorney — I think people should take this with a grain of salt and allow the facts to come out before jumping to a conclusion,” he wrote.

Notably, a federal law enforcement source familiar with the case clarified that the corruption probe was opened by the FBI during the Biden administration.

Former Virginia Republican Delegate Tim Anderson of Virginia Beach, who was previously sued by Lucas for defamation in a case that was ultimately thrown out, also responded. Anderson wrote, “What they have or don’t have on Senator Lucas will be something for the courts to work through if the DOJ initiates criminal charges.”

One of the Virginia Republicans previously targeted by Lucas’ redistricting rhetoric is Rep. Rob Wittman from the commonwealth’s Northern Neck.

Lucas recently cast Wittman in a meme that showed her pulling him away from a depiction of the House Foreign Affairs Committee chairmanship; a role he’s primed to take in 2027.

“Virginians expect their elected officials to serve with integrity and to put the interests of the Commonwealth first,” Wittman told Fox News Digital.

“Reports that State Senator Louise Lucas may be connected to activity warranting an FBI investigation are concerning. I have full confidence that the FBI will conduct a thorough, fair, and impartial review of the facts, and I will reserve further comment until more information is available,” he said.

Virginia Democratic Attorney General Jay Jones, who has faced his own share of controversy over violent text messages he previously sent, also weighed in. Jones said in a statement that “we simply do not have sufficient information about the reported FBI activity in Portsmouth. However, several previous actions of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia have undermined public confidence in that office.”

Fox News Digital reached out to Lucas for comment.

Swing-district Republican breaks with Trump, pushes limits on Iran war

A House Republican facing a tough re-election fight is moving to impose strict limits on the Iran war, breaking with the Trump administration’s claim that hostilities have ended.

Rep. Tom Barrett, R-Mich., introduced a resolution Thursday that would authorize the war through the end of July to permanently degrade Iran’s nuclear program, address “imminent threats,” enforce a naval blockade and ensure safe passage of U.S. ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

But the measure would also set stringent guidelines on prolonged military operations by limiting boots on the ground and prohibiting “nation-building” or occupying or seizing Iranian territory.

“Two things have been clear from the very beginning: Iran cannot be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon and the United States of America cannot be dragged into another endless war,” Barrett, an Army veteran who served multiple tours in the Middle East, said. “The commander in chief has the sole authority to lead our troops in wartime, but I’ve lost too many friends on the battlefield to allow that to happen without Congress exercising its constitutional role to clearly define the mission with safeguards and a deadline.”

REPUBLICANS HAND TRUMP THE WHEEL ON IRAN — BUT ONE RED LINE EMERGES

“If we don’t learn from our foreign policy failures of the past, we are bound to repeat them,” he added.

Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, has also vowed to introduce a similar measure in the upper chamber authorizing the use of military force within strict boundaries, which she has described as a “restraint” on Trump.

Barrett’s measure follows the White House largely shrugging off a 60-day deadline to end the war on Friday by arguing that the ceasefire that began on April 7 effectively stopped the clock on the 1973 War Powers Resolution’s countdown. Under the war powers provision, the administration is required to end hostilities within 60 to 90 days absent congressional approval.

“For War Powers Resolution purposes, the hostilities that began on Saturday, February 28 have terminated,” a senior administration official told Fox News Digital last week.

“Both parties agreed to a two-week ceasefire on Tuesday, April 7 that has since been extended,” the official continued. “There has been no exchange of fire between U.S. Armed Forces and Iran since Tuesday, April 7.”

A press release issued by Barrett’s office stated that “U.S. military operations are ongoing.”

TRUMP ‘RIGHT TO BE OUTRAGED’ BY EUROPE’S BETRAYAL ON IRAN, SAYS FORMER THATCHER ADVISOR

Secretary of State Marco Rubio argued Tuesday that the 1973 War Powers Resolution is unconstitutional, and the administration was only complying with parts of it out of respect for Congress.

“We comply with it in terms of, like, notification because we want to preserve good relations with Congress,” Rubio told reporters during a news conference. “And we do that.”

Trump has repeatedly extended the ceasefire with Iran as both parties are working with mediators to permanently end the war.

Barrett’s resolution would also allow for an additional 30-day “wind-down period” if the Trump administration intended to extend hostilities past the July 30 deadline.

The resolution comes as Barrett, a freshman lawmaker representing a Lansing-area district, is facing a potentially bruising re-election bid ahead of November’s midterm elections.

Bridget Brink, the former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine under former President Joe Biden, and retired Navy SEAL Matt Maasdam are vying in a crowded Democratic primary to unseat Barrett in the swing seat.

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report rates his re-election bid as a “toss-up.”

It is unclear whether Barrett will join Democrats in supporting a war powers resolution that would block military action against Iran absent congressional approval when lawmakers return to Washington next week.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

国家情报总监办公室称,奥巴马主导了2017年1月的情报社区评估报告,该报告“为 essentially a years-long coup against the duly elected President of the United States, subverting the will of the American people and attempting to delegitimize Donald Trump’s presidency.”

DeSantis hits Obama with brutal one-line response to DOJ politicization accusation: ‘Would like a word’

    2026-05-07 12:00pm EDT / Fox News

Obama told CBS the attorney general should be ‘the people’s lawyer and not the president’s consigliere’

    By Peter Pinedo Fox News

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis responded with a sharp one-liner after former President Barack Obama criticized the Trump administration for politicizing the Department of Justice.

“The White House shouldn’t be able to direct the attorney general to go around prosecuting whoever the president wants prosecuted,” Obama said during an interview with CBS.

“The awesome power of the state, you can’t have a situation where whoever is in charge of the government starts using that to go after their political enemies or reward their friends,” he continued.

In response, DeSantis wrote on X, “The Russia collusion hoax would like a word.”

Ron DeSantis hit former President Barack Obama with a one-line jab after an interview with Stephen Colbert in which he suggested the politicization of the DOJ poses an existential threat to the United States.(Joe Raedle/Getty Images; Earl Gibson III/Deadline via Getty Images)

During an interview with CBS’ Stephen Colbert, Obama said that as president, “There were a couple [norms] that I followed, even though they weren’t law.”

“And we’re going to have to do some work to return to this basic norm, and we probably now have to codify it,” he said. “The idea is that the attorney general is the people’s lawyer and not the president’s consigliere.”

Obama said the politicization of the DOJ poses an existential threat to the United States.

“We can survive a lot, bad policy, funky elections, there’s a bunch of stuff that we can overcome, we can’t overcome the politicization of the criminal justice system.”

He said that he would like to see movement towards “restoring some sense of the Justice Department being independent in making judgments about specific cases and prosecutions.”

Under Obama, the FBI, which is a part of the DOJ, opened a counterintelligence investigation in 2016 to examine whether individuals associated with then-candidate Donald Trump had links to Russian officials and whether there was any coordination.

The investigation continued during Trump’s first term and was led by special counsel Robert Mueller. It concluded there were “multiple links” between Trump campaign officials and individuals tied to the Russian government. However, it also found that “the investigation did not establish that the Campaign coordinated or conspired with the Russian government in its election-interference activities.”

In July 2025, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard alleged that Obama and senior intelligence officials improperly politicized intelligence about Russian interference in the 2016 election.

The Office of the Director of National Intelligence alleged that Obama directed the January 2017 Intelligence Community Assessment, which “served as the basis for what was essentially a years-long coup against the duly elected President of the United States, subverting the will of the American people and attempting to delegitimize Donald Trump’s presidency.”

Gabbard said, “There is irrefutable evidence detailing how President Obama and his national security team directed the creation of an Intelligence Community Assessment that they knew was false, promoting the contrived narrative that Russia interfered in the 2016 election to help President Trump win, as though it were true.”

    Critics have disputed Gabbard’s allegations.

Trump says Iran’s government is in a “state of collapse,” but analysts see evolution, not fractures

    2026-05-07T13:45:00-0400 / CBS News

President Trump has said “infighting and confusion” within Iran’s ruling regime is partly why it’s been so difficult to strike a deal to end the war launched by the U.S. and Israel on Feb. 28.

Analysts tell CBS News, however, that while power structures are shifting, there’s little evidence of divisions hampering Iran’s leadership, and Mr. Trump’s rhetoric may be more an effort to find a scapegoat as the White House grapples to present its own policy objectives.

Trump says “nobody knows who is in charge”

A month after former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the first wave of U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran, sparking a war that has shocked the global economy for more than two months, President Trump announced that regime change in Iran was “complete.”

“The next regime is mostly dead,” he said just days after strikes began on Feb. 28, adding that U.S. negotiators were speaking to “a whole different group” of “very reasonable” people.

He’s changed tack in recent weeks, attributing slow diplomatic progress on a deal to end the war at least partially to Iran’s nearly five decade-old theocratic regime being “seriously fractured” and in a “state of collapse.”

“There is tremendous infighting and confusion within their ‘leadership,” Mr. Trump said in a late April social media post. “Nobody knows who is in charge, including them.”

Ultimate political, military and religious authority has long rested with a single figure in Iran, the supreme leader. Iran named Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei as the new holder of that title not long after his father and predecessor, Ali Khamenei, was killed in the first wave of strikes.

U.S. officials say the younger Khamenei was seriously wounded, possibly incapacitated, in the strike that killed his father. There has been no independent confirmation of his condition, and he has not been seen or heard from directly since being announced as the country’s top authority.

At least initially, that invisibility helped fuel perceptions of a power vacuum. But there’s another institution in Iran that has long held significant power, and which may have quickly stepped into any vacuum in Tehran, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.

An Iranian transition “from divine power … to hard power”

The IRGC is a military, political and economic force that has long answered directly — and only — to the supreme leader. It is responsible for Iran’s external military and paramilitary efforts, including managing ties with a network of so-called proxy forces across the Middle East, and also helping to enforce domestic security, quashing dissent.

A recent article by the Reuters news agency, citing Iranian officials and analysts, suggested the new supreme leader’s role was “largely to legitimize decisions made by his generals rather than issue directives himself,” with power coalescing around a wartime leadership contingent consisting of the Supreme National Security Council, the supreme leader’s office and the IRGC, “which now dominates both military strategy and key political decisions.”

Sanam Vakil, director of the Middle East and North Africa program at London’s Chatham House think tank, agrees that “we are moving into a transition of leadership in Iran,” which she told CBS News could bring “shifts in decision-making more broadly.”

The change has been brewing for a few decades, she said, as the ruling clerics have seen their 47-year grip on power loosen while the IRGC has increased its own, through key business acquisitions and by gaining influence as former members have become politicians.

Aaron David Miller, a Mideast expert and senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace who previously served as a U.S. government negotiator, said on a podcast in April that Iran has “moved from divine power … to hard power” – with the regime now “tethered” to the IRGC.

There have even been rumors that the IRGC could try to stage a coup. But on the ground, that seems unlikely.

The IRGC has always derived some authority from its military strength, but it comes mainly from the unit’s deep and direct connection to the institution of the supreme leader.

Without that link to lend religious and ideological legitimacy, the force could appear to many Iranians simply as another branch of the military, rather than as anointed defenders of the Islamic Republic political order, which a significant portion of the country still supports.

Many Iranian analysts believe that as long as the supreme leader is alive that office will remain the highest authority in the nation.

    A regime factionalized “on tactics”

Iran’s President Masound Pezeshkian, whose office is more akin to the vice presidency in the U.S. — decidedly under the supreme leader — is considered a moderate within the regime. Many suspect that he and other political figures favor a return to negotiations, fearful of the consequences of a return to full-scale war with the U.S.

The IRGC, on the other hand, has sought to project no weakness.

“If you attack the infrastructure of the Islamic Republic of Iran, our response will no longer be an eye for an eye, but rather a head for an eye,” IRGC Major General Mohsen Reza’i, a military adviser to Khamenei, said in March.

There have been rumors of a split between IRGC commander Brigadier General Ahmed Vahidi and Mohammed-Bagher Ghalibaf, the parliamentary speaker who led Iran’s negotiating team during the only round of direct talks with U.S. officials since the war began. Those early April talks in Islamabad ended with no agreement to convert the ceasefire into a wider peace deal.

On Monday, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, also part of the Iranian negotiating team, said in a post on X that, “there’s no military solution to a political crisis,” which could be interpreted as a dig at both the U.S., and the IRGC.

Political figures such as Pezeshkian and Araghchi have limited clout in Iran’s power structure, however, and analysts say these differences of opinion – perhaps more public now during the war – pose little threat to the regime.

Vakil told CBS News the regime is, without doubt, factionalized “on tactics, particularly with regard to the negotiations.”

There have been some thinly veiled jabs between the more moderate figures and ultraconservatives, over making concessions to the U.S., for instance.

The IRGC-linked Tasnim news agency published (and then deleted) an editorial in late April mocking ultraconservatives, comparing their expectations for the talks to a “magic beanstalk.”

Ultraconservative cleric and member of Iran’s parliament Mahmoud Navabian, on the other hand, criticized even holding negotiations with the U.S. as “pure damage” for the country, saying on X that, “Iran’s oil is selling for double the pre-war price,” and implying that those who favor a negotiated end to the war are “cowards.”

But the ultraconservatives are a small minority. Iran’s parliament recently voted overwhelmingly in support of a statement backing the negotiating team.

Trump administration “a bit less aligned” than Iran’s regime?

While there are competing viewpoints, Vakil told CBS News the political differences in Tehran look a lot like what she sees in Washington.

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, she says, “is focused on delivering a successful military campaign, whereas Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is focused on the economic portfolio of interests for the U.S.”

“So to me, this is all very normal,” Vakil said, but in Iran, “all of the different groups and individuals are aligned in the preservation of the regime and its security and stability.”

The evolution of power in Tehran does not necessarily indicate fragility in the Iranian regime, but experts tell CBS News the White House may have a vested interest in claiming it does.

“While the Trump administration may have initially hoped for a ‘Venezuela option,’ featuring a Delcy Rodriguez-like figure stepping into leadership, no such option existed” in Iran, Mona Yacoubian, Director of the Middle East Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told CBS News.

“Instead, we have seen that initial decapitation strikes have led to an IRGC-dominated regime in Iran that has adopted a harder-line posture,” she said. “The supreme leader no longer appears to have the final word on decision-making … Instead, decisions regarding Iran’s negotiating posture with the United States appear to be taken by a collective group of IRGC leaders.”

Vakil said she believed Mr. Trump had likely “exaggerated or misrepresented the divisions” in Iran “as an excuse” for a negotiating process that “hasn’t been as easy or quick to deliver on Washington’s side than perhaps Trump has wanted.”

“It’s easy to blame it on [Iran],” she said.

Vakil said she believes Iran’s rulers “have very clear red lines, and it’s much more clear in terms of what they’re trying to achieve, which is the regime’s survival — a permanent deal with guaranteed sanctions relief — whereas the U.S. has been a bit less aligned and less clear.”

这番言论无疑有 condescending( condescending 这里译为“ condescending 译为“居高临下、轻视”)之嫌,毕竟经常有民众认为经济状况相当糟糕。

The Trump team still can’t figure out how to talk about the economy

The Trump administration accounts for one of the highest concentrations of billionaires in the world.

    And often, it shows.

As negative economic perceptions have proliferated in recent months, the administration has repeatedly made comments that were ill-advised at best and gobsmackingly out of touch at worst. And there’s no sign of a course correction.

The Republican-turned-independent former congressman Justin Amash of Michigan wagered Wednesday: “It’s like this administration is now just trolling MAGA.”

He was responding to White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett on Wednesday touting Americans’ increasing credit card spending.

“In fact, I had the head of one of the big five banks in my office yesterday going through the credit card data, and just as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said, credit card spending is through the roof,” Hassett told Fox Business Network. “They’re spending more on gasoline, but they’re spending more on everything else, too.”

Hassett, who like Bessent is not among the administration’s billionaires, was arguing that consumer spending is strong, which suggests a healthy economy. But it could certainly be read as a reflection of rising prices and Americans going into debt, too — which Amash and many Trump critics quickly cited.

“The Trump Administration is now CELEBRATING Americans paying more for gas and putting more on their credit cards,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office said. “They’re literally bragging about people getting squeezed.”

President Donald Trump offered some similar comments Monday at a White House small business summit.

“And thanks to these pro-growth policies, our economy is roaring and factory construction is way up,” he said. “Consumer confidence is way up.”

Neither measure is “way up” or even “up.” In fact, factory construction is down under Trump after increasing greatly under former President Joe Biden. And the data shows measures of consumer confidence hitting their lowest points in the post-World War II era.

“Roaring” is also a claim that precious few Americans would agree with; just 6% rated the economy as “very strong” in polling released last month.

Trump has consistently betrayed his billionaire lifestyle. Last month, for example, he signaled that he was unfamiliar with the concept of a “corner store.”

“What is a corner store? I’ve never heard that term,” he said in Las Vegas at an economic event, adding: “I’ve never heard it described a corner store. Who the hell wrote that, please?”

A day earlier, Bessent cited strong spending numbers to submit that Americans actually felt good about the economy, deep down — no matter what they said.

“Well, look, in their heart of hearts, they feel good,” he said. “I’m not sure what they’re telling the survey people.”

That certainly risked condescending to Americans who routinely rate the economy as quite poor.

It was hardly the first head-scratching comment from the Treasury secretary. In January, he said the administration didn’t want its proposed ban on institutional investors buying single-family homes to inadvertently hurt “mom and pop” investors.

“Mom and pop” investors who … owned up to a dozen homes, that is.

“Someone, maybe your parents for their retirement,” Bessent told Fox Business’ Maria Bartiromo, “bought five, 10, 12 homes. So, we don’t want to push the mom and pops out. We just want to push everyone else out.”

That same week, Trump traveled to Davos, Switzerland, and proceeded to brag to the world’s elite about how much richer he was making them.

“I don’t even ask anybody how you’re doing now,” Trump told a gathering of CEOs. “It’s like everybody is making so much money.”

The president also riffed on how, during his first term, things were so good that a wealthy friend bought an airplane he didn’t even use. Just to underscore, these are the kinds of elites that Trump’s MAGA movement often derides.

The episode epitomized the kind of tone deafness we’ve often seen from Trump. He remains focused on putting his name on things and building a massive arch and ballroom in Washington, DC — he also proudly displayed a gold statue of himself on social media Thursday — even as Americans overwhelmingly think he’s neglected their major cost-of-living concerns. Polls suggest this tone-deafness is a problem for Trump.

And these are just the most recent episodes in this long-running saga. There were several other incidents before Trump spoke in Davos.

That includes Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins talking about saving money with backyard chickens and running “simulations” to produce $3 meals that included a “piece of broccoli”; Trump talking about how Americans could respond to rising prices due to his tariffs by buying children fewer dolls; and billionaire Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick assuring that his mother wouldn’t complain about missing a Social Security check.

It’s as if there’s nobody internally flagging that these kinds of comments risk sounding out of touch. What seems to matter more to the administration is that they echo Trump’s preferred framing that things are, in fact, great.

Which might be true for wealthy Americans. But that message hasn’t seemed to convince the rest of America — and could potentially backfire. Views of the economy have only worsened in recent months, after all.
