Health officials around the world are continuing to monitor a deadly hantavirus outbreak tied to a Dutch-flagged cruise ship currently headed toward Spain’s Canary Islands. So far, eight cases have been confirmed or suspected, and three of those people have died.

Hantaviruses are a family of rare viruses usually passed to humans through contact with contaminated rodent waste or saliva. They often present with symptoms of pulmonary and respiratory distress that can be severe, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The strain identified in the outbreak on the M/V Hondius cruise ship is called the Andes virus, which is the only known hantavirus strain to spread person to person. Transmission occurs through prolonged close contact, health officials say.

Investigations, contact tracing efforts and isolation protocols were underway in a number of countries to which citizens returned after leaving the cruise on a stop at the end of April, as well as for people on a flight with one of the confirmed cases, the World Health Organization said. No one currently on the ship has symptoms of the virus, the ship operator Oceanwide Expeditions said Thursday.

Maria Van Kerkhove, the agency’s director of epidemic and pandemic preparedness and prevention, told reporters at a news conference Thursday that the ongoing nature of those public health measures — and the hantavirus’ potentially lengthy incubation period — meant more cases could still emerge.

Here’s what to know about the ones confirmed or suspected so far.

Dutch couple believed to be first cases

Oceanwide Expeditions said a 70-year-old Dutch man died aboard the ship on April 11. He developed symptoms less than a week earlier, on April 6, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Thursday.

Because his symptoms were similar to those of other respiratory diseases, hantavirus was not suspected at the time of his death, and no samples were taken, Tedros said. However, he is now believed to be the first hantavirus case on the ship.

The man’s 69-year-old wife left the cruise ship on April 24 when it docked in Saint Helena, a remote British island territory in the Atlantic Ocean where a number of other passengers also disembarked. She died two days later in South Africa, after her condition “deteriorated during a flight to Johannesburg,” the WHO said. Her blood later tested positive for the Andes strain of hantavirus.

Before boarding the cruise ship on April 1, the Dutch couple had taken a bird-watching trip through Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, visiting sites where the species of rat known to carry the Andes virus was present, according to the WHO.

Contact tracing procedures were in place for others who were on the wife’s flight from Saint Helena to Johannesburg, Tedros said Thursday. He also told reporters that the WHO was working with countries of which the others who disembarked in Saint Helena are citizens.

British passenger hospitalized in South Africa

On April 24, an adult man from the United Kingdom presented to the cruise ship’s doctor with respiratory symptoms and other signs of pneumonia, according to the WHO.

His symptoms had worsened by April 26, so the passenger was medically evacuated a day later from the island of Ascension to South Africa, where he remained hospitalized in an intensive care unit. Tests confirmed that the man had contracted the Andes virus, South African health officials and the WHO said.

Van Kerkhove said on Thursday the man’s health status was improving after officials previously described him as critically ill.

German woman died aboard the ship

Another passenger, from Germany, died aboard the Hondius on May 2, officials said. According to the WHO, the woman initially developed a fever on April 28 and eventually presented with symptoms of pneumonia. Her body was still on the ship, the cruise operator said.

    3 evacuated to the Netherlands

Officials said three people were evacuated from the ship Wednesday and flown to the Netherlands to receive medical care.

Two of them, a Dutch passenger and a British crew member, showed symptoms of the virus, and Oceanwide Expeditions described their conditions as serious. Van Kerkhove said the WHO had learned both were “stable” on Thursday.

The third person evacuated, a German passenger, was not showing symptoms of hantavirus Wednesday but had been closely associated with the German woman who died on May 2, the cruise operator said. That person has since returned to Germany, the WHO said.

    Swiss man tested positive

A Swiss man who disembarked the cruise ship in Saint Helena tested positive for the Andes strain of hantavirus, according to Swiss health officials and the WHO. The man developed symptoms and underwent testing in Zurich, where he is receiving care, officials said Wednesday.

The man’s wife, who was with him on the cruise, had not shown any symptoms, but was self-isolating as a precaution, the Swiss public health agency said.

    International monitoring efforts

The WHO is in touch with officials in at least 12 countries who are monitoring citizens that returned home after disembarking the ship in Saint Helena, Tedros said. Those countries include Canada, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Singapore, Sweden Switzerland, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States.

In the U.S., the health agencies of five states have said they are monitoring people who were on the ship: two each in Georgia and Texas, one each in Arizona and Virginia, and an unspecified number in California. None of the individuals were showing symptoms, the health departments said.

The French Ministry of Health said it has identified eight French nationals who had contact with the Dutch woman who died from hantavirus on her flight from Saint Helena to Johannesburg. One of those individuals has shown mild symptoms and diagnostic testing was pending, the agency said Thursday. The others were offered isolation measures and access to testing, according to the agency.

Texas mother of 4 says “no one is safe” after spending more than 6 weeks in ICE custody

    May 7, 2026 / 1:13 PM EDT / CBS News

By Shanelle Kaul, Costanza Maio, Suvro Banerji, Elli Fitzgerald

After spending more than six weeks in ICE custody, a Texas single mother of four said she is “absolutely” fearful of it happening again.

“No one is safe,” Meenu Batra said in an exclusive interview with CBS News. But she added,”I believe in the system. I believe I have the documents.”

Born in India, Batra said she has been living and working legally in the U.S. for decades.

The court translator spent 45 days in ICE custody after she was arrested on March 17 at a Texas airport while on her way to Milwaukee for work.

“They told me you’re here illegally,” Batra previously told CBS News while in detention at El Valle Detention Facility in Raymondville, Texas, which is located near the U.S.-Mexico border. “And I said, ‘No, sir, I have my documents with me, in my bag right now.’”

Now that she’s been released, she described the uncertainty while she was detained, saying, “you become small. You start to believe that perhaps you are not equal, that you are not human.”

Batra said the majority of women she met in ICE detention are not violent criminals, who the Trump administration says it is going after. She added leaving them behind makes her feel guilty.

Last week a federal judge ordered the 53-year-old’s release, ruling that she had been detained for “no discernible reason.”

Batra’s children are relieved she’s now home, but she said they’re still grappling with what happened.

“My daughter doesn’t sleep at night time,” Batra said. “She keeps watch on me. Anytime a car passes by, she becomes fearful that somebody is here to … get you.”

Batra fled to the U.S. as a teenager after her parents, who were members of India’s Sikh community, were killed during an outbreak of violence against followers of the religion. She applied for asylum and was ultimately granted “withholding of removal” status, but that status did not allow her to apply for citizenship. However, her son Jasper joined the Army a few months ago and that offers her a path to citizenship because parents of U.S. service members are eligible to apply.

Batra’s habeas petition agains the U.S. government, which aims to prove her detainment was illegal, is still still pending.

In a statement to CBS News, the Department of Homeland Security said, “On March 17, ICE arrested Meenu Batra, an illegal alien from India, during a targeted enforcement operation. Batra was issued a final order of removal from an immigration judge in 2000. She first entered the country illegally at an unknown date and location. An activist judge appointed by Barack Obama RELEASED her from ICE custody on April 30. We will continue to fight for the removal of illegal aliens who have no right to be in our country.”

Batra called the statement from DHS “very disrespectful to the judges and judiciary.”

“They forget that aliens are humans and humans have rights,” she said.

A federal appeals court appeared ready Thursday to reject Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s effort to punish Democratic Sen. Mark Kelly over his call to US service members to refuse illegal orders.

A majority of judges on a three-member panel at the DC US Circuit Court of Appeals spent more than an hour and a half throwing cold water on arguments pushed by the Justice Department to revive Hegseth’s plans, which were shut down earlier this year by a federal judge who said they were unconstitutionally retaliatory.

“That is something that is taught at Annapolis to every cadet,” Judge Nina Pillard, an appointee of former President Barack Obama, said of Kelly’s comments last year.

“These are people who served their country – many put their lives on the line,” said Judge Florence Pan, an appointee of former President Joe Biden. “And you’re saying that they have to give up their retired status in order to say something that is a textbook example taught at West Point and the Naval Academy – that you can disobey illegal orders.”

The third member of the panel – Judge Karen Henderson, an appointee of former President George H. W. Bush – seemed at least somewhat sympathetic to the administration’s arguments. She said at one point that since Kelly could be recalled at any time and court-martialed, it must be the case that other tools are also available for the military to use to go after him over his conduct.

The closely watched case is a key test of the reach of free speech protections for former US military members and the latest flashpoint in President Donald Trump’s campaign to use the levers of government to punish high-profile critics.

Kelly, a retired Navy captain and former astronaut, sued Hegseth in January after the defense secretary announced the Pentagon would pursue administrative action against the Arizona senator, including reducing his last military rank –which would lower the pay he receives as a retired Navy captain – and issuing a letter of censure.

Both Hegseth and Trump have attacked Kelly over a video posted in November by the lawmaker and five other Democrats with a history of military or intelligence service. In the video, they urged service members not to obey unlawful orders that could be issued by the Trump administration.

The lawmakers didn’t specify which orders service members have received, or might receive, that could be illegal but the video was released as some, including US allies, questioned the legality of a series of military strikes targeting suspected drug traffickers in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific. It also came as the Trump administration faced multiple court challenges to the president’s decision last year to send scores of federalized state National Guard members to Democratic-led cities.

Federal prosecutors in Washington, DC, also attempted to indict the lawmakers over the video, but were rebuffed by a grand jury in a remarkable push back that is rarely seen.

    First Amendment protections for veterans

At issue in Thursday’s case were a series of thorny questions about how much First Amendment protection retired service members have over speech directed at serving members of the military.

Justice Department lawyer John Bailey contended that, like active-duty members, retirees can have their speech curtailed or be punished for objectionable speech if officials believe it impacts the discipline and good order of the troops.

“In the military context, the First Amendment is going to function differently,” he said, arguing Kelly’s comments last year were not an “abstract legal education.”

“This is a pattern – a totality of conduct,” Bailey said, pointing to the fact that Kelly’s comments in the video needed to be understood in the context of other remarks he made last year about how the military was being used to carry out counter-narcotics operations.

“This was a wink-wink and a nod,” Bailey said.

Bailey repeatedly said that Kelly’s case was controlled by a 1970s Supreme Court decision in which the justices said an active-duty officer could be punished for imploring service members not to fight in the Vietnam War. But Pillard and Pan made clear that they didn’t see that case as having any use for the government given the stark factual differences between the two.

“Sen. Kelly never says disobey lawful orders,” Pillard said at one point, describing his comments later as an “abstract statement of a principle.”

“There are no cases that we have about the speech rights of retired service members,” she added.

Both judges seemed to agree with Kelly’s argument that retired service members have neither the full free speech protections enjoyed by civilians nor the limited First Amendment rights active-duty service members have. Instead, the millions of retirees like Kelly who still receive pay from the military are likely in a third category that has never before been sketched out by a court, the judges acknowledged.

“It’s not clear what the standard is for a retiree,” Pan said, adding later that the court may not need to define that standard at all. In the end, she said, the panel could reject the government’s position that retirees are on par with active-duty service members without going any further.

Kelly’s lawyer, Benjamin Mizer, told the court that Hegseth’s plan to reduce the senator’s pay and censure him represented “textbook retaliation for disfavored speech” and argued that he was being targeted for stating something that has traditionally been viewed as uncontroversial.

“He simply recited the bedrock principle of military law,” Mizer said.

Outside the courthouse after the hearing, Kelly issued a warning about the purpose of the censure effort: “If you say something that the president and this administration does not like, they’re going to come after you.”

The administration, he said, argued in court that “any time a retired veteran says something the secretary of defense doesn’t like, they can be punished.”

“The people who have given the most in service to this country wouldn’t be free to say what they believe,” Kelly added.

Spencer Pratt is standout LA mayoral candidate in debut debate performance: ’10/10 no notes’

    May 7, 2026 1:10pm EDT / Fox News

Conservative commentators praised his fire critique of Bass and his fluency on crime and housing issues

    By Charles Creitz Fox News

Former reality TV star Spencer Pratt, running in a three-person race for Los Angeles mayor, received rave reviews following his performance during Wednesday night’s NBC affiliate debate.

Pratt is facing incumbent Karen Bass, a former Democratic congresswoman, and socialist Councilwoman Nithya Raman of the Sherman Oaks district in the officially nonpartisan race, where issues of crime, immigration-related conflicts and response to devastating wildfires remain on Angelenos’ minds.

Conservative commentator Meghan McCain, daughter of the late Arizona Sen. John McCain, appeared ecstatic at Pratt’s performance.

“This is not hyperbole,” she said on X. “Spencer Pratt is the blueprint for how my generation of older millennials needs to communicate and present their ideas and campaign messaging when running for office.”

“He is 10/10 no notes. Absolute raw talent. Killed the debate.”

Other observers, including TownHall columnist Dustin Grage, homed in on a moment in which Pratt gave a one-word answer to a yes-or-no question on noncitizen voting policies, while Bass and Raman offered commentaries that critics called “word salad.”

Pratt told the moderator “no” when asked about Hollywood-area Councilman Hugo Soto-Martinez’ proposed ballot motion to allow noncitizens to vote in the city.

“Wow, the moderator asked a simple yes or no question in the LA Mayor’s Debate. Should noncitizens be able to vote in local elections? Spencer Pratt: ‘No.’ Karen Bass: Word salad. Nithya Raman: Word salad,” Grage said.

Other respondents on X shared memes favoring clips of Pratt’s responses to questions, including a much-utilized GIF of Chris Tucker and Ice Cube reeling back and shouting, “Damn.”

In the Los Angeles Times, columnist Gustavo Arellano said Pratt “mostly succeeded” at the debate but came off as a boisterous bro with enough charm to call himself ‘humble’ without coming off as obnoxious.

LA MAYOR BASS CONCEDES AFRICA TRIP WAS ‘ABSOLUTELY’ A MISTAKE AMID BOTCHED WILDFIRE RESPONSE

“He was light on specifics, other than saying he was going to do better than the others and that he would prioritize public safety above all. Instead, he was the one person on stage who used anecdotes to sell himself, citing conversations about abused animals, downtown workers too afraid to eat outside and film producers hiring local gang members to keep their shoots safe,” Arellano wrote.

In a more favorable review, California Post writer Joel Pollak said Pratt was treated “like the beggar at the feast” by moderators but still became the “strongest personality” on the stage and surprised by creating an image of a “solid, big-city mayor” despite his political amateurism.

“You knew he would talk about Karen Bass’ failure in the fire. But what impressed most was his fluency with other issues, from crime to housing,” Pollak said.

Political commentator Steve Guest called Pratt’s fire-related critique of Bass an “amazing moment.”

“Spencer Pratt just torched Karen Bass on live TV,” he said.

A similar fire-related moment was a “mic drop,” according to Florida Politics editor Eric L. Daugherty.

President Donald Trump accused House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., of inciting the most recent assassination attempt against him, further escalating his feud with the top Democrat.

Trump argued in a Truth Social post on Thursday that Jeffries should be arrested after promoting “warfare” against Republicans just days before the assassination scare at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner in April.

“This lunatic, Hakeem “Low IQ” Jeffries, should be charged with INCITING VIOLENCE!” Trump wrote on social media.

He included images of Jeffries standing with a sign displaying the words “maximum warfare” and the faces of Trump and his aide James Blair alongside an image “three days later” of alleged assassin Cole Allen storming the Secret Service checkpoint at the Washington Hilton.

HAKEEM JEFFRIES DOUBLES DOWN ON ‘MAXIMUM WARFARE’ RHETORIC, TELLS CRITICS ‘I DON’T GIVE A DAMN’

“Should Hakeem Jeffries be charged with inciting violence?” Trump’s post asked his 12.6 million followers to ponder.

A spokesperson for Jeffries referred Fox News Digital to a social media post where the top Democrat labeled Trump’s comments as “another deranged rant” and dinged the president on affordability.

“Gas prices are sky high, grocery bills are surging and families can’t catch a break,” he wrote on X. “Democrats are about to take back the House and you’re losing your mind.”

JEFFRIES LAUNCHES NEW YORK GERRYMANDER PUSH AFTER REDISTRICTING CLASH WITH DESANTIS

The online skirmish came after Jeffries already defended his “maximum warfare” language amid GOP backlash in late April.

“I don’t give a damn about your criticism,” he told Republicans.

Jeffries also justified his decision to use the phrase when discussing the nationwide redistricting battle by arguing that an anonymous White House staffer first deployed the phrase to threaten Democrats with GOP-friendly gerrymanders during an interview with The New York Times last year.

“That phrase ‘maximum warfare everywhere, all the time’ came from the White House in the summer of 2025, when they started this redistricting battle, and now they’re big mad,” Jeffries said at a news conference. “Why? Because Democrats have decided to finish it. Get lost.”

Jeffries has consistently said that he opposes all forms of political violence, while refusing to walk back his fiery language.

He told “Fox News Sunday” last month that lawmakers “set the most appropriate example” in their rhetoric, when asked about the rise in political violence.

“Whatever your ideological perspective is, we all love America, and we all want to make sure that this country is the best that it can possibly be,” Jeffries said.

Tennessee Republicans approve map carving up majority-Black US House district

    2026-05-07T18:53:46.306Z / Associated Press

Democratic representatives protest on the floor of the Tennessee House of Representatives during a special session, opposing efforts by the state’s Republican leadership in redistricting congressional election maps, in Nashville on Thursday, May 7.

    Seth Herald/Reuters

Republican lawmakers in Tennessee approved a new US House map Thursday that carves up a majority-Black district in Memphis, reshaping it to the GOP’s advantage as part of President Donald Trump’s strategy to hold on to a slim majority in the November midterm elections.

Protesters shouted “No Jim Crow” outside the House and Senate chambers as lawmakers convened to consider the legislation. As the Republican-led House voted for the new map, Democratic lawmakers locked arms at the front of the chamber while protesters in the gallery yelled, chanted and blew air horns. Shouts from protesters who flooded the halls, where Tennessee state troopers held them back, could be heard inside both chambers.

The new map now goes to Republican Gov. Bill Lee, who called lawmakers into special session.

Tennessee is the first state to pass new congressional districts since a US Supreme Court ruling last week significantly weakened federal Voting Rights Act protections for minorities. But more Southern states could follow. Republicans in Louisiana, Alabama and South Carolina also have taken steps toward redistricting.

The court ruled that Louisiana relied too heavily on race when creating a second Black-majority House district as it attempted to comply with federal law. The high court’s decision altered a decades-old understanding of the law, giving Republicans grounds to try to eliminate majority-Black districts that have elected Democrats.

Louisiana has postponed its congressional primary to give time for state lawmakers to craft a new House map. Legislation awaiting a final vote in Alabama also would upend the state’s congressional primaries if courts allow the state to change its US House districts. In South Carolina, meanwhile, Republican lawmakers urged on by Trump have taken initial steps to add congressional redistricting to their agenda.

The states are the latest to join an already fierce national redistricting battle. Since Trump prodded Texas to redraw its U.S. House districts last year, eight states have adopted new congressional districts. From that, Republicans think they could gain as many as 13 seats while Democrats think they could gain up to 10. But some competitive races mean the parties may not get everything they sought in the November elections.

As a first step to adopting new House districts, Tennessee lawmakers gave final approval Thursday to legislation — quickly signed into law by Lee — that repealed a state law prohibiting mid-decade redistricting. They then passed a bill that would reopen candidate qualifying until May 15 to allow time for new people to enter the US House primaries and existing candidates to switch districts or drop out.

The proposed House map would break up Tennessee’s lone Democratic-held district, centered on the majority-Black city of Memphis, creating a ripple effect of alterations to districts throughout the western and central parts of the state. The geographically compact 9th District that includes Memphis — currently represented by Steve Cohen, who is white — would stretch a couple hundred miles eastward before reaching north toward the Nashville suburbs.

Republican House Speaker Cameron Sexton said the proposed districts were drawn based on population and politics, not racial data.

    But Democrats dismissed such assertions.

“These maps are racist tools of white supremacy at the behest of the most powerful white supremacist in the United States of America, Donald J. Trump,” said state Rep. Justin Pearson, a Black Democrat from Memphis who is running for the US House.

Republican state Sen. John Stevens defended the new districts he sponsored by noting that Democrats in Illinois, Massachusetts and other states also had drawn congressional districts to their advantage.

“This bill represents Tennessee’s attempt to maximize our partisan advantage,” he said.

It does so at the expense of both Memphis residents and democracy, said Sen. London Lamar, a Democrat from Memphis.

“You cannot take a majority Black city, fracture its voting power and then tell us race has nothing to do with it,” she said.

Democrats noted that the state Supreme Court in April 2022 rejected a challenge to the current congressional map, finding it was too close to the election to make changes. This year, there’s even less time before the Aug. 6 primary, raising the potential of confusion for both candidates and voters, Democrats said.

Tennessee’s Republican-led legislature on Thursday approved redrawing the state’s congressional map to carve up the lone Democratic represented district, the latest state to scramble to redistrict as both parties seek control of the U.S. House in November.

The new map will now go to GOP Gov. Bill Lee, who called the lawmakers into a special session to redraw the map. The General Assembly first on Thursday had to pass a measure to overturn its own ban on mid-decade redistricting.

The new map splits Memphis, a Black majority city, and the county that encompasses it, Shelby, into three districts, a move that would favor Republicans. Memphis and Shelby County are currently represented by Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen, who has said he will sue over the new map.

Nashville, a Democratic stronghold until it was split up during the 2021 redistricting, remains split between three districts, although the new map changes those boundaries. Before the map was redrawn this week, Democrats were targeting District 5, currently represented by GOP Rep. Andy Ogles, but that district now includes the affluent Nashville suburbs and runs into downtown Memphis.

Lee called the special session of the Tennessee legislature last week after the Supreme Court threw out Louisiana’s congressional map. In the ruling, the Supreme Court narrowed Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, which considered race in redrawing its House district lines.

“These maps were drawn to maximize our partisan advantage,” said Republican state Sen. John Stevens, who represents northwest Tennessee.

Democrats strenuously objected to the new map, and protesters against the measure filled the State Capitol on Thursday. Ahead of the Senate vote, protesters yelled: “Don’t do this!” Democratic state Sen. London Lamar, who represents Memphis, warned Republicans, “You have awakened a sleeping giant today.”

The measure first passed the Tennessee House during the rowdy session in which the audience was ejected. Democratic lawmakers then walked out when the measure passed.

The mid-decade redistricting war, which kicked off last summer when President Trump pushed Texas Republicans to redraw their congressional map, gained renewed momentum last week after the Supreme Court ruling.
