U.S. Coast Guard can send divers to Bahamas to search for missing American woman Lynette Hooker, source says

The U.S. Coast Guard has been granted permission by the Bahamian government to send divers to canvass previously unsearched areas in the search for missing Michigan woman Lynette Hooker, a source briefed on the investigation confirmed to CBS News Thursday.

The permission was granted to the U.S. Coast Guard Investigative Service, the source disclosed.

Hooker, 55, was reported missing on April 5, one day after her husband, Brian Hooker, told authorities that the couple had set sail for a nighttime ride aboard a dinghy from Elbow Cay in the Bahamas.

Brian Hooker told local investigators that his wife fell from the dinghy and was swept away in the current with the keys to the boat, forcing him to paddle back to shore. He was initially arrested in connection with her disappearance, but was later released and allowed to return to the U.S. He has denied wrongdoing and has not been criminally charged.

On Tuesday, CBS News learned that newly obtained GPS data had prompted U.S. investigators to relaunch the search for Lynette Hooker. The data appeared to contradict Brian Hooker’s account of where his wife was on the night she disappeared.

Earlier this month, the sailboat the couple was using to travel around the Bahamas, Soulmate, was seized by Coast Guard investigators about 40 nautical miles south of Florida, sources told CBS News.

CBS News also learned this week that aboard the Soulmate was an infrared camera capable of detecting heat radiation. Investigators are looking into whether the camera, which uses a cloud memory system, was in use on the night that Lynette Hooker disappeared.

Federal investigators have also been seeking to identify the owners or occupants of a sailboat that may have been moored next to the Soulmate in Aunt Pat’s Bay on the night that Lynette Hooker disappeared. Investigators believe they may have information critical to the case.

In an interview with CBS News conducted in the week after Lynette Hooker’s disapperance, her daughter, Karli Aylesworth, said her parents had separated in recent years, but reconciled and gotten back together. She told CBS News that she did not believe her father’s description of the sequence of events that transpired on the night of her mother’s disappearance.

“For one, I don’t understand how she got the key,” Aylesworth said, referring to Brian Hooker telling investigators that Lynette Hooker fell off the boat, along with the keys to the boat. “Brian’s always driving. So he basically is in charge of the key. So the fact that my mom had it doesn’t make any sense.”

ABC files early station license renewals, calls effort illegitimate

    • Trump has repeatedly pressured the FCC to pull ABC license
    • FCC says it is enforcing public interest rules
    • ABC says FCC action violates First Amendment free speech rights

WASHINGTON, May 28 (Reuters) – Walt Disney

unit ABC on Thursday filed applications for early license review with the Federal Communications Commission for its eight company owned television stations after President Donald Trump pressured the regulatory agency to take action.

The early reviews – the first for a major TV broadcaster in more than 50 years – were ordered in April a day after Trump urged ABC to fire late-night host Jimmy Kimmel. Disney said the FCC early license renewal order was “unlawful, arbitrary, and unconstitutional” and violates its First Amendment free speech rights.

“This effort to suppress speech under the guise of bureaucratic process must not prevail,” ABC added. “It is an unprecedented attack on a single company’s entire portfolio of broadcast licenses.”

The FCC said last month the reviews, which were not supposed to begin until October 2028, were prompted by a year-long probe on the FCC’s ban on unlawful discrimination. The stations are located in Fresno, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, New York, Philadelphia, Houston and Durham, North Carolina.

The FCC did not immediately comment Thursday.

Trump has repeatedly urged broadcasters to drop comedy or news programs he dislikes or which have been critical of him, pressing regulators to revoke licenses of broadcasters he says are unfair to him.

Democratic FCC Commissioner Anna Gomez says the Trump administration is engaged in a targeted effort to censor Disney and its ABC network through a series of sweeping regulatory actions.

The FCC is also investigating ABC daytime talk show “The View” after declaring it is subject to federal equal time rules for political candidates.

FCC Chair Brendan Carr opened an investigation in March 2025 into Disney’s diversity practices and said Disney submitted documents in the probe that he felt were insufficient. He declined to say if a similar review of diversity practices at Comcast and NBC could lead to an early review there.

ABC rejected the argument that its nondiscrimination policies violated commission rules.

The company added it believed the proceeding was an exercise to search for a legal pretext to achieve its desired goal. The goal is “to ramp up toward possible license revocation and cause the station and others to think twice before they say something the government might dislike,” ABC said.

In November, Trump demanded the FCC revoke ABC licenses after he criticized an ABC News correspondent for asking Saudi Arabia’s crown prince about the 2018 killing of a Washington Post columnist in a question he dubbed “insubordinate.”

(Alien.gov/白宫)

White House drops eerie aliens ‘walk among us’ warning — but the truth is much closer to home

Users can search ICE arrest data by city, state or alleged crime, with an option to ‘report suspicious aliens’

Trump directs release of new alien, UAP files

Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, joins ‘Fox News Live’ to discuss President Donald Trump’s decision to have the Pentagon release government files on alien life forms and UAPs.

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

FIRST ON FOX: The White House has a new message on aliens: They are not coming from outer space — they are already here and ICE is tracking them.

The Trump administration launched Aliens.gov on Thursday, a space-themed immigration enforcement website that turns UFO-style “disclosure” language into a live dashboard on illegal immigrant arrests, migrant encounters and immigration operations nationwide, Fox News Digital learned.

“They walk among us,” the website reads. “For 60 years, the U.S. government has kept a closely guarded secret. Aliens have been walking among us, living in our neighborhoods, and interacting with us in our daily lives. They’ve shopped in the same stores, attended the same classes as our children, and lived seemingly normal human existences.”

“With one exception — they do not belong here.”

DHS LAUNCHES ‘WORST OF THE WORST’ WEBPAGE TARGETING ALLEGED CRIMINAL ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS NATIONWIDE

The White House launched aliens.gov, a space-themed site with live illegal immigrant arrest data, ICE heat maps and a tip line to report aliens.(Alien.gov/white House)

Fox News Digital exclusively reviewed the White House site, which packages immigration enforcement data as a tongue-in-cheek “alien transparency” project while making a more pointed political argument on illegal immigration.

“This is a first of its kind effort to draw eyeballs to the fact that the previous administration’s porous border didn’t just put families in border states at risk, many across the country were in harm’s way,” a White House official told Fox News Digital.

The website features a U.S. heat map tracking “alien arrests,” showing where migrants are being detained by officials, alongside a real-time counter displaying that there have been more than 3 million migrant encounters.

Using ICE arrest data, users can search by city, state or alleged crime to view local immigration arrests. The database displays arrest dates, criminal charges, countries of origin and suspected gang affiliations.

“Millions arrived under the cover of darkness and embedded themselves directly into our society. Countless presidents, congressmen, and senior officials knew exactly what was happening. Instead of protecting American citizens, they chose to cover it up and even accelerate the invasion,” the new website states.

“Until one man finally had the courage to tell the truth. Bold. Unapologetic. Unafraid. President Trump was the first to call out the real danger Aliens pose to every American family, every community, and the future of our nation,” the website said. “The truth is no longer out there. It is right here. Right now.”

    2026-05-28T20:00:28.689Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/05/28/politics/e-jean-carroll-trump-retribution

    E. Jean Carroll, and the unmistakable pattern of Trump’s retribution campaign

    2026-05-28T20:00:28.689Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/05/28/politics/e-jean-carroll-trump-retribution

    • There’s a pattern of President Donald Trump’s Justice Department investigating key figures who were on the other side of major legal issues against him.
    • The latest example is the Justice Department investigating E. Jean Carroll, the former magazine columnist who successfully sued Trump.
    • And there could be more — acting Attorney General Todd Blanche hasn’t disputed the premise that people who prosecuted Trump need to be investigated.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has said it’s “absolutely not true” that the Justice Department is assisting President Donald Trump in a retribution campaign against his enemies.

But the evidence suggesting otherwise is getting more incontrovertible.

CNN’s scoop Wednesday that the Justice Department is investigating E. Jean Carroll, the former magazine columnist who successfully sued Trump for sexual abuse and defamation, builds out the unmistakable pattern.

That pattern: Trump’s DOJ has taken investigative steps against key figures who were on the other side of most of Trump’s major legal issues in recent years.

It would be a remarkable coincidence that people involved in each of these matters just happened to be involved in alleged criminal matters that were worth probing in the first 16 months of the second Trump administration. But that’s where we’re at.

In addition, the allegations against these Trump foes have often been shown to be rather thin when scrutinized.

The Carroll investigation involves examining whether she committed perjury as part of her two civil lawsuits against Trump. Her legal team has not yet commented. (Trump has appealed the sexual abuse case judgment to the Supreme Court and has pledged to do the same with the defamation case.) CNN reported that Blanche has been recused from this matter because he worked as one of Trump’s personal attorneys on the Carroll appeals.

Carroll isn’t the first participant in a major civil lawsuit against Trump to subsequently find herself targeted, of course.

New York Attorney General Letitia James was indicted last year over rather thin claims of alleged mortgage fraud after winning a major civil fraud judgment against Trump and his business in 2024. When that indictment was thrown out over prosecutorial problems, the DOJ tried and failed to re-indict James two more times. Then, The New York Times reported in January that DOJ was investigating different allegations involving James.

The pattern extends to criminal investigations involving Trump, too.

Then-FBI Director James Comey and then-CIA Director James Brennan were both key figures in the early stages of the Russia investigation that dogged Trump in the beginning of his first term.

Comey was indicted for alleged perjury last year, before that was thrown out for the same reasons as the James indictment. Then Trump’s DOJ last month secured another indictment against Comey — but for a completely separate issue, a supposed threat against Trump that many legal experts are highly skeptical of.

An investigation of Brennan for allegedly lying to Congress has also been percolating for a long time, with CNN’s Evan Perez and Hannah Rabinowitz reporting this month that prosecutors are still struggling to satisfy the White House’s thirst for criminal charges.

Trump’s government has also probed key figures in indictments against him, though that seems to be a slower process.

Former special counsel Jack Smith, who secured Trump’s two federal indictments, has been the subject of an Office of Special Counsel investigation for allegedly violating the Hatch Act, which limits political activities of government officials. (The two “special counsels” are not the same thing.)

And the Times reported in October that DOJ was scrutinizing Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, who in 2023 secured an indictment of Trump and his allies for allegedly interfering in the 2020 election.

The Times said it had reviewed a subpoena related to a trip Willis took to the Bahamas. (Her office said the trip was for leadership training and no government funds were used.)

And finally, the administration has also taken investigative steps against key figures in congressional investigations against Trump and impeachments of him.

On his first impeachment, the Washington Post has reported that then-interim US Attorney Ed Martin last year sent letters probing a business led by Democratic Rep. Eugene Vindman of Virginia and his brother, Alexander Vindman, who’s running for US Senate in Florida — both central players in the allegations against Trump and his 2019 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

And Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard last month sent the DOJ a criminal referral seeking a probe of then-intelligence community inspector general Michael Atkinson, who played an important role in sharing a whistleblower complaint that set off the scandal.

The Justice Department has also probed allegations of mortgage fraud against Sen. Adam Schiff of California, who managed the House’s first impeachment of Trump and later chaired the House January 6 committee.

Indeed, at this point it’s difficult to find a legal matter involving Trump where his DOJ hasn’t tried probing principal actors involved.

About the only major one where there are no reports of investigative steps being taken against key figures would seem to be Trump’s 2024 local criminal conviction in Manhattan on 34 counts of falsifying business records.

Of course, Trump has suggested prosecutors involved in the cases against him should be investigated.

And it doesn’t sound like it’s off the table.

During an appearance in March at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), Blanche was asked if “justice” was coming to Willis, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg and “this cast of characters.”

Blanche didn’t dispute the premise that these people needed to be probed. In fact, he leaned in on the idea.

“Well, yes. I mean, of course, like, look, yes,” Blanche said to applause. “Look, you have these district attorneys across the country – those are by far the best examples … of the pure weaponization by the left of our system of justice.”

Blanche, who was then deputy attorney general, added: “The attorney general and myself, every day, seven days a week, are focused on bringing justice. And it will come.”

Woman without right hand speaks out about viral traffic stop video: “I felt very uncomfortable”

    May 28, 2026 / 5:16 PM EDT / CBS News

The woman whose interaction with Florida police went viral after she was written a ticket alleging she was driving while holding her phone in her nonexistent right hand has opened up about her experience to CBS News, saying she hopes the uncomfortable situation will result in more awareness for those with limb differences.

Kathleen Thomas, 36, was driving in Lake Worth, Florida, in February when she was pulled over by a deputy from the Palm Beach Sheriff’s Office. The deputy said he had seen her phone in her right hand. After confirming what he said, Thomas revealed her right arm stops at the elbow.

Thomas said she thought it was just a misunderstanding. But despite the impossibility of Thomas using her phone with her right hand while driving, the deputy ultimately wrote the ticket.

“Initially, [I thought], ‘Oh, this is going to be funny, which is why I laughed,’” Thomas exclusively told CBS News. “I cackled, more like it. But then it became very apparent when he did not laugh or interact in like, a friendly manner, that it was not going to go that way.”

She added, “I wouldn’t say it put me on edge, but it definitely left an unsettling feeling of, ‘OK, what is this? Where are we going with this?’”

The viral bodycam video shows the deputy continuing to ask Thomas if she was using her phone with her right hand. Then the officer asks her to swear, “hand to God,” that she hadn’t been using her device. Thomas raises her right arm. The officer responds by telling her to raise her left, and only, hand.

“Immediately, I was being my normal self and threw up my hand to God. He did not recognize that as a sufficient hand to raise to God, which is ironic considering that’s who gave it to me,” said Thomas, who was born with her lower right arm missing. “He proceeds to ask me to do my left, which is like, ‘OK, cool.’ Watching it after the fact, getting that bodycam footage over the weekend and sitting with it, I realized immediately that I felt very uncomfortable.”

After obtaining the bodycam footage, Thomas shared the clip on social media. It quickly went viral, racking up millions of views and bringing her tens of thousands of new followers on Instagram and TikTok.

She planned to appear in court to fight the ticket on Wednesday. But on Monday, the deputy who wrote the ticket asked for it to be dismissed.

“He realized, whether it was through social media or whether it was through his own self-reflection, that, ‘Hey, maybe this wasn’t a great idea. Maybe I didn’t handle it correctly,’” Thomas said. “Obviously he didn’t choose to move forward with fighting it in court, which I was thankful for.”

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office told CBS News in a statement that the deputy “initiated a traffic stop based upon his visual observation at the time of the incident.” The department said the ticket was dismissed after a review of state statutes and “based upon the totality of the circumstances, specifically the lack of clarity on how violations are labeled in our citation software.”

“PBSO remains committed to professionalism, fairness, and the lawful enforcement of Florida statutes,” the department said.

Thomas said that even though the case was dismissed, the process has had an impact on her life. Thomas said it “took a long time to get to this court date,” and said she had to do “online court” before the scheduled date. Getting the bodycam footage was cumbersome, she added. She said she hopes the situation can at least have a silver lining.

“I was born this way. It’s never going to change. It’s never going to hold a phone,” she said. “I would love people to take away is that limb difference is normal. Somebody who looks different than you is normal. All of that is normal. Normal is whoever you’re most comfortable being.”

Thomas said she doesn’t believe the deputy “came at me with malice,” but said she believed he wasn’t trained to deal with a situation like this. She said if she could speak to the officer again, she would ask him why he reacted the way he did and why the interaction escalated.

“Why did you ask me to put my hand to God over the situation?” she said. “If you knew going into it that you were going to write the citation, just write the citation.”

“And I would hope that he gives himself grace for the interaction. We can look at it in the videos and say, ‘Oh, we should have done this different, we should have done that different.’ Thankfully, both of us walked away from that interaction,” Thomas said. “We were both OK. Nobody was harmed other than some emotional damage, I think on both parts. From there it just becomes a matter of, I really hope he takes the time to think about ‘OK, what is appropriate, what’s inappropriate?’”

She also offered this message to the officer: “Explain to me your side. Explain to me what you were thinking. How did we get to this point? And then from there, kind of just see where our two sides can kind of come together and say, Hey, look, here’s how we discuss limb difference. Here’s how you address somebody. Here’s things that you probably shouldn’t do, like make them raise their hand to God.”

New York state budget includes New York City tax on high-end second homes

NEW YORK, May 28 (Reuters) – New York State Governor Kathy Hochul on Thursday signed a state budget that includes a progressive surcharge on luxury second homes in New York City, a move backed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani and expected to generate $500 million per ‌year for the largest U.S. city.

The new “pied-a-terre” tax – a French term for a secondary residence that translates as “foot on the ground” – faced criticism from billionaires Ken Griffin, Bill Ackman and Kevin O’Leary. Mamdani had called Griffin’s $238 million penthouse condominium overlooking Manhattan’s Central Park a potential target of the proposal.

The surcharge would generate approximately $500 million in annual revenue for New York City, according to a summary of the budget, which legislators approved late on Wednesday.

The support from Hochul, who previously opposed tax hikes to fund Mamdani’s campaign promises, including “taxing the rich” to ease the lives of ordinary New Yorkers, marked a win for the New York City mayor as he seeks to close his city’s budget gap.

“If you can afford a multi-million dollar second home in New York City, you can afford to join its residents in supporting the greatest city in the world,” Hochul said last month on her Facebook account.

The rate at which secondary homes are ‌taxed will slide based on the market value of the apartments that is currently understated for tax purposes under city law and represents only a fraction of their sales prices. The new budget ordered the city’s tax commission to review and correct all real property assessments.

In the first two fiscal years, 2026-2028, homes with the market values of $5 million to $15 million, $15 million to $25 million and more than $25 million will be taxed 0.8%, 1.05% and 1.3%, respectively, and surcharge rates for apartments with the market value $1 million to $3 million, $3 million to $5 million and over $5 million will total 4%, 5.25% and 6.5%. Starting in fiscal year 2028, tax rates for the apartments will be reduced to the same level as for houses, according to the budget.

Properties will be considered primary residences, and therefore not subject to the surcharge, if they are occupied by one of the owners, their immediate relatives – spouses, parents, children, siblings, grandparents and grandchildren – or tenants.

假报警呼叫是指通过拨打虚假的犯罪警情报告——如谋杀、人质事件、炸弹威胁或活跃枪手事件等需要大规模执法力量响应的案件—— targeting an individual by calling in a false police report for crimes — such as a murder, a hostage situation, bomb threats or active shooters that would require a greater law enforcement response — to the home of the target.

Police responded to a “swatting call” at the residence of Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett in Virginia on Wednesday evening, police confirmed, marking the latest security scare involving a conservative public figure.

“Yesterday evening at approximately 9:02 p.m., officers responded to a swatting call at the residence of U.S. Supreme Court Justice in Fairfax County,” a Fairfax County Police Department public information officer told Fox News Digital on Thursday when asked about reports concerning the incident at Coney Barrett’s home.

Fairfax police responded to Barrett’s home after they received a call through the department’s non-emergency line, then met with the justice’s security detail, who confirmed the report was “fictitious,” the officer told Fox News Digital.

The incident comes amid years of heightened threats against Supreme Court justices, including protests outside conservative justices’ homes after the leaked Dobbs draft opinion in 2022 showing the court was poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, and the arrest near Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s home of a California man who was later charged with attempted murder.

“Officers immediately coordinated with Supreme Court Police personnel assigned to the residence and quickly determined that the report was fictitious. No additional police resources were utilized,” the police department said.

Swatting calls target an individual by calling in a false police report for crimes — such as a murder, a hostage situation, bomb threats or active shooters that would require a greater law enforcement response — to the home of the target.

A partial audio recording of the police audio surfaced on X on Thursday that reported a “call came in for sounds of gunshots.” Law enforcement can be heard saying there was a “suspicious noise” at a 24-hour security coverage for a “high-priority resident” of the county.

Barrett was on the bench Thursday morning alongside her colleagues, and read aloud summaries of two opinions she authored. Barrett made no mention of the Wednesday incident in her bench remarks.

“Swatting is an attempt to get an innocent person killed—in this case, a sitting Supreme Court Justice,” posted Republican Utah Sen, Mike Lee on X as reports of the incident surfaced Thursday. “The proper response will be putting the offender in prison for many, many years.”

The leaked Dobbs draft opinion became a lightning rod for protests, with abortion-rights activists demonstrating outside the homes of Barrett, Kavanaugh and other members of the court’s conservative majority.

In June 2022, Californian Nicholas John Roske was charged with attempted murder for making violent threats against Kavanaugh while carrying a gun, knife and pepper spray near the justice’s home. He was later sentenced to eight years behind bars.

Attacks on conservative leaders have been on the rise, most recently targeting the commander in chief, including just in April at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner.

There were two public assassination attempts on Trump’s life in 2024, beginning in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a bullet grazed his ear after a gunman climbed onto a roof during a rally on July 13, 2024.

Earlier this month, a California Army veteran known for his display of “Make America Great Again” memorabilia and American flags outside his residence, dubbed the “Trump House,” was attacked and beaten to death.

    2026-05-28T22:56:43.115Z / https://www.cnn.com/206/05/28/politics/lonnie-bunch-smithsonian-america-250

As America celebrates its 250th, Smithsonian leader Lonnie Bunch treads a fine political line

    2026-05-28T22:56:43.115Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/05/28/politics/lonnie-bunch-smithsonian-america-250

    • Smithsonian leader Lonnie Bunch III is navigating political pressure from the Trump administration while curating a 250th anniversary exhibition.
    • In a rare interview, Bunch says the White House has not requested any changes, new documents or inputs since the Smithsonian turned over documents the administration requested for a review.
    • A new exhibition aims to give a sense of America’s struggles and aspirations. Items on display include Thomas Jefferson’s desk, the first nugget found in the California gold rush and MLK’s handwritten “I Have a Dream” draft, among others.

AI-generated summary was reviewed by a CNN editor.

For over a year, Lonnie Bunch III, the head of the storied Smithsonian Institution, has been at the center of a political tempest.

Under President Donald Trump’s second administration, the world’s largest museum institution and a key voice in shaping the narrative of America’s history has been under pressure to remove “woke” ideology.

In a rare interview on Thursday, Bunch insisted the Smithsonian has maintained its autonomy even as the institution has “given everything that’s been asked” by the White House for its review of the institution and its exhibits.

So far, Bunch told CNN, the White House has not requested any changes or updates.

“We wait to hear,” he said.

After largely staying out of the public eye as he contends with Trump’s criticism of the Smithsonian, Bunch has helped curate his first exhibition since becoming its secretary – a display to mark America’s 250th birthday.

While Trump looms large over other celebrations planned for this summer, the historian and first Black American to serve as head of the Smithsonian says the administration did not play any part in his thinking or selections.

“My goal is that history is driven by scholarship, not partisanship,” he said. “The Smithsonian always does its own scholarship. It’s always driven by that. We have always worked with different administrations, but it’s always about what our scholarship tells us.”

The exhibition, titled “American Aspirations,” is on view beginning June 2 at the iconic Smithsonian castle, which had been closed since 2023 for renovations, but will reopen temporarily.

It brings together objects from across the Smithsonian’s collections to explore what the institution calls the “ideals, ambitions, and contradictions” that have shaped the United States.

Among the objects that will be featured are the desk where Thomas Jefferson drafted the Declaration of Independence; Amelia Earhart’s flight suit; a poster written by abolitionist Frederick Douglass; and the first gold nugget to have been discovered during the California gold rush of 1848.

Bunch told CNN an early model of the Statue of Liberty was among the items he especially wanted to include, as it exemplifies how the story of American struggle has evolved. He pointed to the broken shackles at her feet – a symbol of liberation and the abolition of slavery.

He noted that today, many see the Statue of Liberty as a symbol of America’s embrace of immigration – but “it was initially created because people in France were so impressed that America ended slavery,” he said.

“So really what you want people to understand is how this is all interconnected. And that’s why it’s so beautiful to me,” he said.

The original handwritten draft of Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, on loan from Villanova University, and Harriet Tubman’s hymnal will also be on view during part of the exhibition run due to their fragility.

Trump has previously vented frustrations with the Smithsonian’s handling of slavery in America, writing in a social media post last August that “the Smithsonian is OUT OF CONTROL, where everything discussed is how horrible our Country is, how bad Slavery was, and how unaccomplished the downtrodden have been — Nothing about Success, nothing about Brightness, nothing about the Future.”

While the “American Aspirations” does not ignore slavery, the exhibition, like the larger American narrative, is “not a story of just slavery,” Bunch said. “It’s a story of America’s struggle to be the nation that we want it to be.”

“America is a work in progress,” he added. “Its greatest strength is not to think that it’s arrived at the promised land but … we continue to do to work towards a better America.”

Yet the exhibition’s emphasis on hope and aspirations for democracy come at a moment when critics accuse the Trump administration of eroding those ideals.

CNN previously reported that some artists had felt concerned by what they saw as an atmosphere of “censorship” at the Smithsonian’s museums.

Bunch, for his part, told CNN he believes that “90% of the Smithsonian is exactly where you want it to be.”

“There are always changes because basically there are exhibits that get upgraded,” he said. “The great importance of the Smithsonian is that what we want people to do is grapple with nuance and complexity.”
