BOSTON, May 28 (Reuters) – The Trump administration is suing to challenge four Democratic-led states’ refusal to issue confidential license plates to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, saying they have long ​provided them to other law enforcement agencies conducting undercover operations.

Oregon
and

Washington
after they refused to rescind their policies and allow ICE access to such plates to carry out arrests as part of Republican President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

Officials in ​at least two of those states – Maine and Massachusetts – have previously cited aggressive tactics ​by ICE agents for not wanting state resources to be used to facilitate covert ⁠civil immigration enforcement.

The lawsuits make good on a threat Assistant U.S. Attorney General Brett Shumate had ​made in a series of letters he sent earlier this month to state officials to sue if they ​did not alter their policies.

The Justice Department contends the states unlawfully discriminate against the federal government in violation of the U.S. Constitution by treating ICE and other components of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security differently than ​state and local agencies involved in law enforcement.

The Justice Department said the policies threaten the safety ​of federal immigration agents, exposing officers to harassment, tracking, and assaults in the performance of their duties while carrying ‌out ⁠arrests.

“Law enforcement officers risk their lives every day to keep Americans safe and must be able to carry out their duties effectively,” Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement.

Spokespeople for the governors of Maine, Oregon and Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment. ​A spokesperson for Massachusetts ​Governor Maura Healey, a ⁠Democrat, pointed to a letter her administration sent the Justice Department last week defending its policy.

In the letter, Healey’s administration described the Massachusetts Registry ​of Motor Vehicles’ policy as lawful, saying it applied not just to ​federal agencies but ⁠state and local law enforcement as well, who could only obtain such license plates for criminal probes.

The Justice Department in its lawsuit against Massachusetts said that as recently as 2025, all federal agencies including ⁠ICE ​and U.S. Customs and Border Protection had been able to ​obtain confidential vehicle registrations and license plates in Massachusetts.

The policy changed this year, according to the lawsuit, with Healey’s administration ​declaring that it would not enable ICE’s tactics.

The intense media scrutiny and Republican attacks facing Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner of Maine over his controversial and inflammatory past online comments and his now-removed but well-publicized tattoo on his chest that resembled a Nazi symbol don’t appear to be slowing him down.

A new public opinion poll shows Platner holding an upper single-digit lead over longtime Republican Sen. Susan Collins of Maine in a race that is among a handful that will likely decide if the GOP holds its slim 53-47 majority in the Senate in this year’s midterm elections.

Platner, a progressive candidate backed by Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, stands at 51% support among likely Maine voters, with Collins at 42%, in a Pine Tree State poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire. Six percent of respondents were undecided, with 2% backing other candidates.

The survey is the latest public opinion poll to indicate Platner, an oyster farmer and Army and Marine veteran who served in combat in the Afghanistan and Iraq wars, leading Collins, a moderate Republican who is seeking a sixth six-year term in the Senate representing left-leaning Maine.

Ninety-one percent of Democrats questioned said they’d vote for Platner in the general election, with 87% of Republicans backing Collins. The senator held a slight 47%-44% edge over Platner for the support of independents.

The poll was released two weeks ahead of Maine’s primary.

Platner is considered the Democrats’ presumptive nominee after two-term Democratic Gov. Janet Mills, who was backed by Senate Democratic Leader Sen. Chuck Schumer and other establishment leaders, suspended her campaign a month ago. Mills cited fundraising concerns and polling woes for her decision to end her bid. But the governor’s name will remain on the primary ballot.

According to the poll, Platner stands at 76% support for the Democratic nomination, with Mills at 10% and longshot Senate contender, David Costello of Brunswick, who spent decades working in state and federal government, at 3%.

Collins faces no challengers for the Republican Senate nomination.

“I believe that will be the conclusion of Maine voters. But, obviously, I don’t take anything for granted,” Collins said when asked in a Fox News Digital interview earlier this month if Platner was too far to the left.

But Platner, in a Fox News Digital interview a week later, argued, “What’s radical is somebody like Susan Collins, who, for decades now, has made sure that we pass policies that are going to help corporations and billionaires to the detriment of working people, supporting over and over and over again, illegal and insane foreign wars.”

Platner, amid a slew of media stories, has come under fire from Republicans in recent weeks over his past controversial comments from last decade, after he returned from combat tours of duty, as well as more recent comments earlier this decade, that he made on Reddit.

Meanwhile, Platner has said he got the skull and crossbones tattoo in 2007 while drinking with fellow Marines stationed in Croatia. He said that he covered up the tattoo with a new design after learning last year that it resembled a Nazi symbol.

“As I said months ago, I find Platner’s Nazi tattoo and his commentary about it personally disqualifying,” Auchincloss wrote Tuesday in a social media post. “If it were me, I’d vote for someone else in the Maine Democratic primary.”

The Pine Tree Poll was conducted May 21-25, with an overall sampling error of plus or minus 2.6 percentage points.

Trump Accounts app launches today. Here’s what to know.

Americans can download the Trump Accounts app starting today, as part of the rollout of a new federal program to help children save money before they reach adulthood.

The app will allow parents or guardians to manage the tax-preferred investment accounts on behalf of their kids. Beginning July 4, the U.S. government will make a $1,000 contribution to eligible children with accounts, with funds to be invested in the stock market. Account holders can also start making personal contributions that day.

Excluding the government’s donation, annual contributions are capped at $5,000 per child, with certain exceptions.

“The Trump Accounts app delivers a simple, secure way for households to begin engaging with a program designed to build long-term financial strength from day one,” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement on Thursday.

How do I access the app?

The Treasury Department said that parents who signed up for an account for their children will receive emails with instructions on how to set up the Trump Accounts app, which they can download from the Apple App Store, Google Play or TrumpAccounts.gov.

The agency will send emails to activate the accounts in phases between now and July 4. Messages will use the address no-reply@TrumpAccounts.Treasury.gov.

“Treasury will not contact you by text message or phone call about Trump Account activation,” the department said. “If you receive a call or text about a Trump Account, do not respond, it is likely a scam.”

Who is eligible for a Trump Account?

Children who are U.S. citizens and who are born between Jan. 1, 2025, and Dec. 31, 2028, are eligible for a Trump Account. The accounts must be set up and managed by parents or guardians until the child turns 18. At that age, children can tap the money to pay for qualified expenses, such as education, buying a home or starting a business.

Parents, employers, charitable organizations and other parties can all contribute money to the accounts, which Bessent has touted as a “rainy day fund” kids can use when they reach adulthood.

Can I still sign up?

Millions of Americans have already signed up for Trump Accounts, according to the Treasury Department. Enrolling requires logging in to an individual’s IRS account and completing Form 4547, a specific tax form to open a Trump Account. The accounts are free to set up.

Can funds be withdrawn before a child turns 18?

No. Families may not withdraw funds from a Trump Account before a child turns 18, except for the following reasons:

• A rollover of the entire account to a Trump Account with another brokerage
• Certain rollovers to an “Achieving a Better Life Experience” account in the year the child turns 17
• Distribution when the individual dies

After age 18, standard IRA withdrawal rules apply.

美军中央司令部星期四（5月28日）在声明中说，美国东部时间27日22时17分，伊朗向科威特发射了一枚弹道导弹，科威特军队成功拦截了导弹。在导弹发射前数小时，伊朗发射五架单向攻击无人机，“对霍尔木兹海峡及其附近地区构成明显威胁。所有这些无人机均被美军成功拦截”。美军还阻止了伊朗发射第六架无人机。

新华社报道，伊朗给出了不同说法。据伊朗媒体28日报道，伊朗伊斯兰革命卫队发表声明说，美军违反停火协议，向阿巴斯港的空旷区域发射了数枚导弹，但未造成任何损失。作为对此次袭击的回应，革命卫队打击了发动袭击的美军基地。

28日早些时候，科威特全国响起防空警报。这是该国时隔一个多月再次拉响防空警报。科威特军方随后称拦截了“敌方”导弹和无人机袭击。

科威特指责伊朗发动了此次无人机和导弹袭击，并谴责伊朗此举。法新社引述科威特外交部28日的声明说，对伊朗使用导弹和无人机袭击科威特领土的行为表示“最强烈谴责”，并称此举构成“危险的局势升级”。
