Virginia man sentenced to life in prison for double murder scheme in affair with au pair

    2026-06-05 13:07:18 EDT / CBS/AP

A Virginia man who was having an affair with the family’s Brazilian au pair was sentenced Friday to life in prison without parole for the murder of his wife and a man who was lured to the couple’s home as a fall guy.

Brendan Banfield, a former IRS law enforcement officer, claimed he shot Joseph Ryan after he came across Ryan attacking his wife on the morning of Feb. 24, 2023. But prosecutors said Brendan Banfield and au pair Juliana Peres Magalhães set Ryan up in a scheme to get rid of Christine Banfield, a pediatric intensive care nurse.

Judge Penney Azcarate called Banfield’s actions evil and calculated.

“The disregard of the life of your wife, someone you supposedly loved, is almost unfathomable,” she said in handing down the sentence, which is mandatory in Virginia for an aggravated murder conviction.

The scheme involved “luring a completely innocent man into your deadly trap; continuing on after the murders without a care; and not once — not once — thinking of the impact” on the Banfields’ 4-year-old daughter. Brendan Banfield “took everything from her,” Azcarate said.

In addition to murder, jurors in February convicted Banfield of child endangerment because the couple’s daughter was home during the killings. Azcarate sentenced Banfield to an additional five years on that charge and three more years on a firearms charge.

Speaking at his sentencing, Banfield continued to proclaim his innocence, saying it would have been impossible for him to have committed the murders. He reiterated there was dissent within the police department over the theory Banfield and Magalhães had impersonated Christine Banfield on a website for sexual fetishes in order to lure Ryan to the home.

Banfield said he loved his wife and, although he had affairs, he never intended to leave her.

Azcarate was unmoved, citing his lack of remorse as one of the reasons she felt no hesitation in ordering him to remain behind bars for life.

During Banfield’s trial, Magalhães testified he had told her he wanted to marry her and have children with her, but he needed to “get rid of” his wife first. He didn’t want a divorce because “she would have more money than he would” and because he wanted custody of the couple’s daughter, said Magalhães, who was 21 when she started working for the Banfields in 2021.

Magalhães told jurors she and Brendan Banfield had impersonated Christine Banfield on a website for sexual fetishes. They used the site to lure Ryan to the house in Herndon, Virginia, for a sexual encounter involving a knife and staged the scene to look as if they had shot a violent intruder.

Magalhães testified that on the day of the killings, she waited in a car outside the house with the Banfields’ child. When Ryan arrived, she called Brendan Banfield, who was waiting at a nearby McDonald’s. The pair took the child to the basement and then went to the bedroom, where they encountered Ryan. Brendan Banfield shot Ryan and then stabbed Christine Banfield with the knife Ryan had brought. When Magalhães saw Ryan moving, she fired a second shot that killed him.

Some media have dubbed the case the “au pair affair.” Magalhães pleaded guilty to manslaughter after agreeing to testify against Brendan Banfield. Magalhães was sentenced to 10 years in prison after Banfield’s trial.

At Magalhães’ sentencing hearing, Azcarate said, “Your actions were deliberate, self-serving, and demonstrated a profound disregard for human life,” according to CBS affiliate WUSA. “So let’s get straight — you do not deserve anything other than incarceration and a life of reflection on what you have done to the victim in this family. May it weigh heavily on your soul.”

New York Democrats recently passed a bill that would remove the words “mother” and “father” from parts of state law, sending the legislation to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s desk for final approval.

Under the new bill, targeting state child custody and parental laws, “mother” becomes “gestating parent,” “father” becomes “non-gestating parent,” and “paternity” becomes “parentage.”

It passed in the state Senate this week after progressing through the Assembly in March.

Democrats who drafted the legislation claimed the wording shift would promote “inclusivity,” while critics claim the change is unnecessary, with the legislative session having ended for the year on Thursday, FOX 5 New York reported.

Hochul said during a news conference that she isn’t familiar with the proposal, but promised to review it.

“I have until the end of the year to review them and make a decision, so I won’t be commenting on pending legislation,” Hochul said.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Blakeman shared multiple posts responding to the bill on social media Friday.

“In Kathy Hochul’s New York, ‘mom’ is now defined as ‘gestating parent,’” Blakeman wrote. “Not when I’m Governor! I’ll stand up for moms and dads against this insanity.”

“This bill is a continuation of Hochul’s war on families, and I won’t stop fighting until we take New York back,” he added.

Rep. Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y., reacted to the bill on X Thursday, saying, “The party that can’t define a woman is now rewriting New York law to erase mothers and fathers. Only in Albany could ‘mom’ and ‘dad’ become too controversial.”

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., slammed Senate Republicans after most of them voted to pass a bill to greenlight billions of dollars in funding for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

The measure passed 52-47, mostly along party lines, though one Republican, Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, joined Democrats in voting against passage.

“Tonight, Senate Republicans passed a rotten bill that makes their priorities painfully clear: more money for Donald Trump, more power for Donald Trump, and nothing to lower costs for working families. Republicans refused to permanently outlaw Trump’s $2 billion slush fund, leaving taxpayers to rely on nothing more than a promise from Donald Trump’s personal fixer. That is not accountability. That is a permission slip,” Schumer said in a statement.

“They pumped another $70 billion into Trump’s personal police force, defended Trump’s corrupt ballroom, and protected his slush fund for cop-beaters— all while voting against Senate Democrats’ efforts to lower the cost of housing, health care, gas, and childcare,” Schumer continued. “The Republican agenda is now written in black and white: a slush fund for Trump, tax dodges for Trump, a ballroom for Trump, and a private militia for Trump. For hard-working Americans? Nothing. Democrats are fighting to put money back in Americans’ pockets. Republicans are fighting to put more power, more money, and more weapons in Donald Trump’s hands.”

The Justice Department said in a statement last month “that as a part of the settlement agreement in President Donald J. Trump v. Internal Revenue Service, the Attorney General established ‘The Anti-Weaponization Fund’ to provide a systematic process to hear and redress claims of others who suffered weaponization and lawfare.”

The DOJ explained, “The Fund will receive $1.776 billion and will come from the judgment fund, which is a perpetual appropriation allowing DOJ to settle and pay cases.”

During a congressional hearing on Tuesday, Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said that the DOJ will never move forward with the plan for the anti-weaponization fund, which he said had not been “set up yet,” noting that no commissioners had been named and no claims had been made yet.

ACTING AG BLANCHE REVEALS FATE OF TRUMP’S ‘ANTI-WEAPONIZATION FUND’ UNDER PRESSURE FROM HOUSE LAWMAKERS

“After tonight’s vote, it’s clear to Americans that Republicans refused to outlaw Donald Trump’s $2 billion slush fund,” Schumer said in another statement released by Senate Democrats. “Now the whole country can see the truth: Republicans fought like hell to protect Donald Trump and his slush fund but didn’t lift a finger to help working Americans lower their costs.”

“Senate Republicans tried to bury their radical agenda in the dead of night, but Democrats forced them to answer for it — amendment after amendment, vote after vote. Republicans voted against building 7 million new affordable homes, against lowering gas prices, against cracking down on health insurance companies that deny Americans coverage, against making childcare more affordable, and so much more. Again and again, Republicans chose Trump instead. While families are struggling to get ahead, Senate Republicans just voted to help Trump bleed them dry,” Schumer added.

The mom of the American college student missing in Japan told CBS News the two had an argument over her use of ChatGPT on their vacation before he disappeared.

James “Weston” Higginbotham, a 20-year-old Auburn University engineering student, has been missing since May 29.

Nancy Higginbotham called the use of ChatGPT “a sore subject” between her and her son.

“I was using a little bit too much ChatGPT. Japan is a country that I’ve had a hard time navigating,” she said. “Weston is very anti-AI because you know he’s into sustainability engineering and AI uses a lot of water and is depleting a lot of water resources.”

Weston had decided to stay back while his parents and brother visited a nearby temple in Kyoto after lunch on May 29. That evening his parents saw his location move on a family tracking app and texted him, but didn’t receive an answer.

He was last seen leaving the Yamashina train station in Kyoto. His parents believe Weston, an avid hiker, was going to a nearby trail.

“My fear is that he, that he got hurt and that he’s stuck,” Nancy Higginbotham said. “My fear is that he doesn’t have enough food because there is plenty of water, and that he’s lost. Those mountains, that forest goes for a very long time and … it’s extremely dense.”

    Search efforts

Nancy Higginbotham said police are suspending their search.

“They said they’ve concluded their search of the area that they committed to and they conducted a very thorough search over three days to include 100 police officers, K9 dogs, the helicopters, and they did not find him,” she said.

The family is hiring a professional search and rescue crew in Japan, which is expected to cost over $100,000. They said they are not leaving Japan without their son.

“We have complete confidence that we are going to find him,” Weston’s dad, Keith Higginbotham, said.

Putin sees “no point” in meeting with Zelenskyy to discuss ending war

    June 5, 2026 / 2:49 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Russian President Vladimir Putin said he sees “no point” in meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in an effort to end the war with Ukraine.

On Thursday, Zelenskyy wrote a letter to Putin, the first public message he has sent to the Russian leader since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, in which he criticized Putin’s 26 years of rule and said “age is beginning to take its toll.”

Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin described Zelenskyy’s open letter proposing the meeting as “boorish.”

“Is it a way to create conditions for personal meetings and talks, or create an environment which makes any personal meetings impossible?” Putin said at a question-and-answer session at his annual St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. “I think it’s the second.”

Putin added that a Russian businessman whom he didn’t identify traveled to Kyiv last month and met with Zelenskyy to hear his offer of a personal meeting.

However, Putin said he currently sees “no point” in such a meeting, especially after a May 22 drone attack by Ukraine on a college dormitory in the Russian-controlled Luhansk region that Moscow said killed 21 and wounded scores of others.

In response to Zelenskyy’s barbs about his age and long stay in power, the 73-year-old Putin pointed at other global leaders who are older, adding that “the main thing isn’t age; the main thing is the ability to work.”

He also mocked Zelenskyy’s rocky Oval Office meeting in 2025 and thanked U.S. President Trump for “educating” Zelenskyy “before the eyes of the whole world” and teaching him a proper dress code.

“There is still a lot to be done,” he said.

Zelenskyy acknowledged shifting U.S. priorities, saying it would be wrong to simply wait for the Trump administration to return its attention to ending the fighting in Ukraine while it remains heavily focused on the Iran war.

In Washington, Mr. Trump said Thursday it “would be great” if Putin and Zelenskyy meet.

Mr. Trump said Friday he didn’t mind if the two leaders met before the U.S. got involved, as he proposed in the past.

“I’m the one that got them to this point,” Mr. Trump said while speaking to reporters on Air Force One. “And I think that’s going to get worked out. … We want to see it done.”

Putin has previously offered for Zelenskyy to come to Moscow for talks, an offer that the Ukrainian leader pointedly rejected. Putin said last month he doesn’t exclude a meeting in a third country, but only when there is a deal to sign.

On Thursday, Putin again rejected Zelenskyy’s push for an immediate ceasefire, arguing that Moscow wants a comprehensive settlement, not a temporary truce.

Putin said Russia is open for a compromise on Ukraine in line with understandings reached at his last year’s summit with Mr. Trump in Anchorage, Alaska, adding that Ukraine needs to accept them to make a deal to end the conflict.

“Naturally, the Ukrainian side would like us to suspend the advances made by Russian troops,” he said. “But it would be better to end the war by agreeing to the compromises that were discussed in Anchorage.”

Asked about Iran, Putin voiced hope for an eventual deal to secure lasting peace. He shrugged off claims that Moscow provided Iran with satellite images, saying that Tehran could use widely available commercial ones.

“As for weapons, Iran hasn’t asked us for them and we haven’t supplied any weapons to Iran,” he said, adding that Russia stands ready to take enriched uranium for storage as part of a potential peace deal, and that Moscow has stayed in contact with Iran, the U.S. and Israel.

    Global turbulence

In a speech earlier Friday at the forum, Putin said developing countries have gained an increasingly important role in the global economy, while the share of output by Western countries has shrunk.

He accused the West of undermining the global economy and finances with unilateral sanctions. By freezing Russian assets abroad through sanctions, Western nations eroded trust in their own currencies, he said.

“The sanctions and blocking of Russia’s sovereign reserves have irreversibly impacted the standing of international currencies, the dollar and the euro,” he said. “Just like Russia, any other country could lose access to their legitimate assets in dollars or euros, as well as Western financial and payment systems.”

He alleged that high state debt had helped undermine global trust in Western institutions.

“The roots of the current global turbulence lie in the transition from a vertical, hierarchical model, which served the interests of a small number of states, to a more complex, distributed and multipolar one,” Putin said. “Russia views global changes not only as a threat but also as immense opportunities. And to capitalize on them, we aim to act swiftly and pragmatically.”

The Russian leader said the world needed a “modern, flexible and responsible financial architecture — free from risks, bans and barriers.”

    Putin stresses Russia’s macroeconomic stability

Putin played down Russia’s economic slowdown and sought to emphasize its macroeconomic stability. He noted that Russia’s state debt is a fraction of that in Western countries and its budget deficit is considerably smaller, compared with the West.

The forum comes at a time when Russia’s economic outlook has clouded amid the conflict in Ukraine. The government raised taxes and increased domestic borrowing to keep its budget deficit under control.

On Thursday, Putin told heads of international media on the forum’s sidelines that it was an exaggeration to say Russia’s economy was struggling. He noted that his government had taken deliberate steps to cool the economy to keep inflation under control.

Putin has used the St. Petersburg forum, likened to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, to showcase his country’s economic advances and encourage foreign investment. While Western officials and business leaders have stayed away after Putin sent troops into Ukraine in 2022, Russia has sought guests from elsewhere to underline its declared goal of promoting a “multipolar world.”

Saudi Arabia sent a large delegation this year, and the presidents of Uzbekistan and Tanzania and vice president of China also gave speeches Friday. A U.S. official, Rodney Mims Cook Jr., head of the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, is attending for the first time in years.

Cook was singled out in the audience during a question-and-answer session following Putin’s speech. Cook praised the beauty of St. Petersburg and Putin thanked him for the remarks about his hometown and asked to convey his greetings to Mr. Trump.

Hours before the forum opened Wednesday, a Ukrainian drone attack set ablaze an oil terminal in St. Petersburg and also hit a nearby naval base.

Putin declared that Russia was “calmly and resolutely” moving to reach its goals in Ukraine. He acknowledged the damage from Ukrainian drone attacks deep inside Russia and vowed to build up defenses.

“They do inflict a certain damage,” he said. “For us, it means only one thing: we need to strengthen our security, strengthen air defenses, and we will do that.”

Texas ranchers on edge after screwworm parasite detected in calf

    • Summary
    • USDA deploys containment measures, including fly traps and sterile fly releases
    • Ranchers criticize USDA response
    • Screwworm outbreak threatens livestock and wildlife populations in South Texas

LA PRYOR, Texas, June 5 (Reuters) – The quiet Texas cattle town of La Pryor has become ground zero in the fight against screwworm after the first U.S. case in decades was detected there, ‌prompting a livestock quarantine and putting ranchers and pet owners on edge.

A calf at a ranch tested positive on Wednesday for the flesh-eating parasite, which left a gaping hole around its umbilical cord.

Keep up with the latest medical breakthroughs and healthcare trends with the Reuters Health Rounds newsletter. Sign up here.

Ranchers in South Texas have been bracing for the arrival of screwworm for more than a year, as the flies progressed from Colombia through Central America, inching closer to the U.S. border. The parasite could decimate cattle herds and local wildlife.

    Advertisement · Scroll to continue

U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins has said only one case has been confirmed, and that the agency was doing all it could to stop a spread that threatened Texas’ multi-billion-dollar cattle industry.

USDA WORKERS LEAD CONTAINMENT EFFORTS On Friday, 28 USDA workers fanned out across Zavala County, which borders Mexico’s Coahuila state, setting fly traps, releasing sterile flies to halt their reproduction and talking to ranchers. Four more workers were scheduled to arrive soon, said Rear Admiral Michael Schmoyer, associate administrator for USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Major roads out of La Pryor were marked with blinking orange signs urging vehicles carrying livestock to pull into a checkpoint staffed with sheriffs and state personnel to inspect the animals for signs of screwworm.

    Advertisement · Scroll to continue

Marcel Valdez, a retired teacher and Texas A&M University extension agent, recalled the last time screwworm appeared in South Texas, when he was a boy in the 1960s.

As he sat on his truck’s tailgate watching stray cats eat food he put out, he recalled how screwworm-infested calves kicked and licked at their open wounds, the smell of rotting flesh as hundreds of larvae ate the animals alive, and the sharp smell of the black, tar-like medicine he used to treat them.

[1/3]Cows lie in a pasture, a day after the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed that New World screwworm was detected in a Texas calf, in La Pryor, Texas, U.S. June 4, 2026. REUTERS/Kaylee Greenlee Purchase Licensing Rights, opens new tab

Now he ‌worries most about younger cattle ranchers who have no experience treating the pest, the abundance of wild animals that could become vectors for spreading it and the limited number of sterile flies being produced.

“The screwworm multiplies so fast, it can get out of hand very, very quickly,” he said.

TEXAS DECLARES STATE OF DISASTER Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, declared a state of disaster on Friday, asking the federal government to speed up completion of a sterile fly production facility. The plant, which broke ground in April, was set to be operating by November 2027. Abbott offered to have Texas shoulder additional costs to accelerate construction. “We need the high volume of sterile flies as quickly as possible,” Abbott said at a press conference. “It’s critical the new facility that is being constructed in Texas right now be completed even faster.”

The sterile male flies mate with wild female screwworms to produce infertile eggs. The facility must be completed before summer 2027 because the pest is more likely to spread during summer than winter, Abbott said. “We cannot make it through a second summer,” he said. Other ranchers and some Texas politicians, including those in President Donald Trump’s Republican Party, lambasted the USDA’s efforts.

“The USDA has had plenty of time to prepare for this and they are failing,” Brent Smith, the attorney for Kinney County, adjacent to Zavala County, wrote on X.

Rollins said on Thursday that screwworm had been projected to cross into the U.S. by last year, and that the Trump administration’s efforts staved it off, giving the USDA time to deploy a rapid response.

Fears of further infestations continued to rattle markets on Friday, extending a rally on U.S. cattle futures.

June 5 (Reuters) – New York state lawmakers on Thursday passed a ban on businesses setting ‌individualized prices for consumers based on their personal data, in the strongest move yet by a state against the practice.

    • If New York Governor Kathy Hochul signs it into law, the One Fair Price Act would prohibit companies from setting prices based on data that could be traced to a person or their device, such as browsing history, income and real-time location.
    • Discounts for seniors, teachers and other specific groups, as well as discounts offered through loyalty programs, would still be allowed.
    • Companies would also have to disclose when they are using prices that fluctuate automatically based on an algorithm, also called “dynamic pricing.”
    • New York would be the ‌third state to prohibit the practice. Grace Gedye, a policy analyst at the consumer advocacy group Consumer Reports, said the bill improves upon those passed in Maryland and Connecticut, but still has flaws the legislature should address in the future.
    • Hochul is likely to face corporate lobbying to weaken the bill, Gedye said. A spokesperson for Hochul said she is reviewing bill. The governor has until the end of the year to act on the legislation.
    • The proposal would replace a law Hochul signed last year that requires a disclaimer when prices are set by an algorithm using individuals’ personal data.

Bondi’s replacement saddled with Epstein baggage as he awaits grueling confirmation battle

    2026-06-05 15:26 EDT / Fox News

Senators in both parties have criticized the redaction process and missing documents from the millions of files released

Former Attorney General Pam Bondi revealed that Todd Blanche, who at the time was second in command at the Justice Department, was put in charge of the release of the millions of documents from the Epstein files during her closed-door hearing before Congress late last month.

“As the head of a large department with broad responsibilities, I did not lead every aspect of this effort nor conduct that document review myself,” Bondi said during the hearing. “I delegated that oversight over this process to Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche.”

The House Oversight Committee released its transcript from Bondi’s May 29 hearing just a day after President Donald Trump announced he intended to nominate Blanche as his permanent attorney general nominee, potentially complicating Blanche’s confirmation as senators on both sides of the political aisle have heavily criticized the files’ rollout.

Blanche has been serving as Acting Attorney General since April 2, when Trump announced Bondi’s dismissal.

The release of the transcript, which placed responsibility for the Epstein files rollout squarely on Blanche’s shoulders, comes just days after Blanche announced during a hearing that the Justice Department will be eliminating its controversial Anti-Weaponization Fund, which was created to compensate alleged victims of politicized prosecution and labeled a “slush fund” for Trump and his supporters by critics. The Justice Department’s handling of the Epstein files and the Anti-Weaponization Fund, both overseen by Blanche, has drawn concern from both Republican and Democratic lawmakers.

Bondi’s testimony revealed that Blanche had been her point man on the Epstein files and was tasked with briefing her on the release of the Epstein files.

The former attorney general found herself in hot water last July following a joint release by the Justice Department and FBI finding that there was no evidence that convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, who is alleged to have hundreds of underage victims, had kept a client list.

The joint statement, which Bondi said during May’s hearing was penned by Blanche and not her, comes after months of the Trump administration teasing the release of the Epstein files. In February 2025, Fox News’ John Roberts asked Bondi about the release of Epstein’s “client list,” which Bondi responded by saying that it was “sitting on her desk.” Bondi and the White House clarified after the fact that she was referring to the files as a whole and not Epstein’s “client list.”

Members of Congress asked Bondi why Blanche interviewed Epstein’s co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell, who was in prison, weeks after the joint memo release. Bondi replied by saying Blanche “was leading the Epstein matter and the release of everything from the beginning.”

Once Trump signed the Epstein Files Transparency Act in November 2025, Bondi stated Blanche oversaw the release of millions of documents, which entailed overseeing the redaction process, including its protocols and guidelines, determining which documents were privileged and making corrections to redactions.

DOJ’S EPSTEIN DISCLOSURE DRAWS FIRE FOR WEBSITE GLITCHES, MISSING DOCUMENTS, REDACTIONS

“He was in charge of the process and the entire release of the Epstein files,” Bondi said.

But the Justice Department faced scrutiny over failures to redact all identifiable information from some of Epstein’s victims, allegations that some redactions were heavy-handed and that some documents were completely missing, prompting a bipartisan group of senators to send a letter in March requesting that the Government Accountability Office lead an investigation into the Justice Department’s redaction process.

“Not only has DOJ withheld files, but those records that were disclosed are largely information that was already public,” the letter stated. “Even those records are so heavily redacted that there are serious questions as to whether the Department is properly applying the limited exceptions for redaction that are permitted under the Act. Moreover, several records appear to have been removed, without explanation, from the files the Department did released.”

However, Bondi said during the hearing that she was not blaming Blanche and that the error rate for the redaction was 1%, which was what Blanche had told her.

“He managed this investigation — and it was a Herculean task — with very little error,” Bondi said during the hearing. “And Todd did an excellent job, in my opinion, and is doing an excellent job as our Attorney General.”

Following her closed-door testimony, Bondi pushed back on allegations from Rep. Robert Garcia, D-Calif., that she is pushing the blame of the Epstein Files rollouts on Blanche.

“NOT TRUE,” Bondi posted on X. “I praised Acting AG Blanche’s management of this Herculean task. I said his ethics are beyond reproach and that he is an incredible Attorney General.”

A White House spokesperson said that Blanche was doing an “excellent job” and will continue to perform well.

“Todd Blanche is an American patriot who fearlessly fought on behalf of President Trump against the Democrats’ illegal and unprecedented lawfare campaign,” said Abigail Jackson, a White House spokeswoman. “The President’s entire team at the Department of Justice is doing a great job advocating for sanity, law and order, and policies that keep Americans safe.”

Blanche’s nomination is also expected to face scrutiny from Democrats who have questioned whether the former Trump defense attorney can serve as an independent attorney general. Last month, Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., launched a Senate Judiciary Committee inquiry based on allegations that Blanche disregarded ethics guidance advising him to recuse himself from matters at the Justice Department involving Trump, who he previously served as a personal lawyer to.

Anthony Head, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Ted Lasso” star, dies at age 72

British actor Anthony Head, best known for playing librarian and mentor Rupert Giles on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” has died at 72, his talent agency Gordon & French confirmed to CBS News on Friday.

Head’s daughters said he had died of complications from pneumonia.

“Our grief is far greater than the hole he has left behind, but we know his legacy will live on, in the shows he was a part of, and in the audiences that love them,” Daisy and Emily Head said in a statement shared with CBS News partner BBC News. “How lucky we are to know we are able to watch him doing what he loved, even when he is no longer with us.”

Head rose to fame in England in the 1980s, then became internationally known with his leading role on “Buffy” in the late 1990s. He was best known for his deep baritone voice and was a frequent face on television, including a role on the British classic “Doctor Who.” He also appeared in films including “The Iron Lady” with Meryl Streep and 2024’s “Upgraded.”

Head most recently appeared on Apple TV’s “Ted Lasso,” where he played villainous team owner Rupert Mannion throughout the show’s first three seasons. Head did not appear in a recent teaser trailer for the show’s upcoming fourth season.

Daisy and Emily Head noted that their father “always considered himself very lucky” and said that he “loved his job very much.” They also said “his legacy will live on” through his entertainment work.

Head spent his life in England. He shared his two daughters with longtime partner Sarah Fisher. Fisher, an animal welfare advocate, died in December, according to BBC News.

Daisy and Emily Head said their father died surrounded by his family.

“It has been, and forever will be, an honour and a privilege to be his daughters, and to have witnessed firsthand the impact both he and his work have had on so many,” they said.

Head’s “Buffy” co-star Nicholas Brendon died from natural causes in March at the age of 54. Michelle Trachtenberg, who joined the supernatural series in its fourth season, died in February 2025 due to diabetes complications.
