Remains of teen U.S. soldier who told his mother “no tears” identified 75 years after vanishing in Korea

    April 15, 2026 / 10:03 AM EDT / CBS News

A 19-year-old New Mexico man killed in action during the Korean War has been accounted for, military officials said Tuesday.

U.S. Army Sgt. Celestino Chavez enlisted in the military in 1949, when he was 17 years old, the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency said in a news release. Chavez was assigned to D Battery, in the 15th Anti-Aircraft Artillery of the Automatic Weapons Battalion in the 7th Infantry Division.

Chavez’s mother, Lupita Chavez, said she last heard from him on Nov. 27, 1950, when she received a letter that said “If anything happens to me, please mother, no tears,” according to a news clipping shared by the DPAA.

Three days later, on Nov. 30, 1950, Chavez was wounded while defending his position near the Chosin Reservoir in Korea. The region, in present-day North Korea, was “the site of one one of the most brutal battles between UN and Chinese Communist Forces” during the war, according to the DPAA. About 30,000 United Nations soldiers and Marines fought against 120,000 enemy troops for several weeks between late November and mid-December 1950, the agency said. Over 1,000 U.S. service members were killed, and thousands more were wounded, according to the DPAA.

Chavez was “struck and seriously wounded” during the attack, according to a statement that accompanied a Silver Star posthumous medal he was awarded. However, he “refused to be evacuated … because there was no other man available to replace him.”

“He stayed at his post voluntarily and, despite his wound, kept the weapon firing,” the statement read, according to a news clipping shared by the DPAA. “When the enemy attack had been broken up by the accurate and intense fire, Corporal Chavez, weakened by loss of blood, collapsed unconscious and fell from the M-19 gun carriage to the ground.”

Chavez was eventually evacuated to an aid station, the DPAA said. He was reported missing in action on December 2, when his convoy was “ambushed by opposing forces,” according to the agency. No records show he was a prisoner of war. He was declared presumed dead on Dec. 31, 1953.

Chavez was the only person from his hometown of Gallup, New Mexico to be unaccounted for in the conflict, according to a local news clipping. His name was memorialized in the Courts of the Missing at the National Memorial Cemetery in the Pacific.

The DPAA said that because of cold weather and the retreat of U.N. forces from the Chosin Reservoir, hundreds of servicemembers were unable to be immediately recovered. Over the decades, efforts have been made to recover and identify bodies of those who died at the site. About 7,500 U.S. troops are believed to be unaccounted for from the Korean War, according to the DPAA.

In 2018, North Korea turned over 55 boxes believed to contain the remains of American service members who died in the Korean War. The DPAA has been studying those remains to try and make further identifications.

Through anthropological analysis, circumstantial and material evidence, and multiple forms of DNA and genome testing, the DPAA was able to positively identify a set of remains as belonging to Chavez. The identification was made exactly one year ago on April 15, 2025. Chavez’s remains were transported to New Mexico. Members of the New Mexico National Guard Funeral Honors Team received his casket in Albuquerque.

“We’re here to make sure he is received with dignity,” a National Guard member said, according to a social media post by the team. “It’s an honorable duty.”

Chavez received a military burial with full honors in his hometown, according to the DPAA. In addition to the Silver Star, he was honored with a Purple Heart and the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars, according to the National Guard. His name has been removed from the Courts of the Missing.

The DPAA said that Chavez’s family have received a full briefing on his identification, but did not specify when. In addition to his mother, Chavez was survived by multiple step-siblings, according to news clippings. The agency did not share which family members are still alive today.

Woman among 4 more Iranians sentenced to death over protests, rights groups say

    April 15, 2026 / 11:13 AM EDT / CBS/AFP

Iranian authorities have sentenced to death four more people, including a woman, over last January’s protests, several rights groups said on Tuesday.

Iran has already hanged seven people in connection with the protests, which activists say were put down in a crackdown that killed thousands and led to tens of thousands of arrests.

Rights groups accuse the Islamic Republic of using the death penalty as a tool of repression to instill fear in society, and fear it will ramp up capital punishment in the wake of the war against Israel and the United States.

The four were sentenced to death by a Tehran Revolutionary Court presided over by the notorious judge Imam Afshari after being convicted of carrying out actions on behalf of the United States, the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency and the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center said in separate statements.

The regime’s judiciary accused the group of numerous charges, including “using explosives and weapons,” “harming stationed forces on-site,” and “throwing objects including bottles, concrete blocks, and incendiary materials from the roofs of buildings,” according to the opposition National Council of Resistance of Iran.

It was not immediately clear when the verdict was issued.

The four convicted were named as Mohammadreza Majidi-Asl and his wife Bita Hemmati, along with two other men, Behrouz Zamaninejad and Kourosh Zamaninejad, who lived in the same Tehran building as the married couple.

Hemmati is believed to be the first woman to be sentenced to death over the protests.

The Abdorrahman Boroumand Center said it also believed that Hemmati was the woman who appeared in a video broadcast on state television in January being personally interrogated by judiciary chief Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei.

“The recording and broadcasting of forced confessions from defendants in an opaque process … constitutes a blatant violation of the defendant’s rights,” it said.

According to Iran Human Rights Monitor, Iran has carried out 656 executions in the first three months of this year but the actual tally is “likely far higher” since Iran was largely offline in March when only eight were recorded.

Norway-based Iran Human Rights and Paris-based Together Against the Death Penalty said on Monday in their joint annual report on the death penalty in Iran that at least 1,639 people were executed in 2025 — including 48 women.

As well as the seven already executed, death sentences have been issued against at least 26 other people arrested over the January protests and several hundred more are facing charges that could see them executed, Iran Human Rights warned.

Last month, Iran executed three men who were accused of killing police officers during the protests, including Saleh Mohammadi, a young member of Iran’s national wrestling team.

“Dozens of individuals arrested during the January 2026 protests have been sentenced to death following grossly unfair, fast-tracked trials conducted without due process, access to independent counsel and reliance on torture-tainted forced ‘confessions’ as evidence,” said the New York-based Center for Human Rights in Iran.

The National Council of Resistance of Iran called on the United Nations “to take immediate action to save the lives of prisoners sentenced to death, especially political prisoners and those detained during the uprising.”

More than 53 million tax filers used at least one of President Donald Trump’s signature tax breaks this filing season, as the average refund climbed above $3,400, according to Treasury Department data released on Tax Day.

The figures mark the first filing season since the Republican-backed “Working Families Tax Cuts” were passed in July 2025 and implemented by the IRS, with Trump administration officials touting broad uptake and increased tax relief.

Wednesday is the deadline to file taxes for the 2025 earning year, and the president promised the “largest tax refund season in U.S. history” thanks to his One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

As of April 14, the average refund rose 11% compared to the previous filing season, Trump’s Treasury Department claims. Filers who used at least one of the new provisions saw an average tax cut of about $800, the new report found.

The data points to widespread use of several provisions in the new law.

About 25 million filers claimed a deduction for overtime pay, while roughly 6 million claimed a tax break on tips. An estimated 30 million seniors took advantage of an enhanced deduction, and approximately 34 million families claimed an expanded child tax credit.

Another 105 million filers used the expanded standard deduction, while about 1 million deducted interest on car loans for new American-made vehicles.

Treasury also said more than 5 million “Trump Accounts” have been opened, including about 1.2 million eligible for a $1,000 pilot program contribution.

The accounts, created under President Donald Trump’s sweeping One Big Beautiful Bill Act, are government-backed investment funds for children designed to grow over time.

They function similarly to traditional long-term investment vehicles, but with rules tailored to protect young savers.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the results show the administration’s tax policy is delivering meaningful relief to workers and families.

“Under President Trump, we uphold the foundational principle that hardworking Americans should be rewarded, not punished with tax hikes,” Bessent said in a statement included in the data release.

He touted that taxpayers are “keeping more of what they earn and seeing their paychecks go further.”

Newly released surveillance video shows Oklahoma high school principal tackling gunman

    April 15, 2026 10:51 AM EDT / CBS News

Newly released surveillance video shows an Oklahoma high school principal tackling a gunman in the school’s lobby.

Seconds after the suspect opened fire at Pauls Valley High School last week, principal Kirk Moore is seen racing into the hallway. Moore pushes the gunman onto a bench and holds him down before another staffer helps kick the weapon away.

“We’re about a population of 6,200 people. Good kids, good community. Certainly don’t expect these type of situations to happen in your town,” said Pauls Valley Police Chief Don May.

Moore, an educator for 35 years, was shot in the leg and airlifted to a nearby hospital. No one else was injured in the shooting.

“He got up like the rest of us to go to work and who dreamed this was going to happen? So I just want to say thank you,” said Lindel Fields, the Oklahoma superintendent of public instruction.

In a statement, Moore credited his “instincts and training, as well as God’s hand” for helping him subdue the threat. He said he looks forward to returning to work as soon as possible so that he can continue his “life’s work educating the next generation of Oklahoma leaders.”

Court documents identify the suspect as Victor Lee Hawkins. Law enforcement said the 20-year-old suspect is a former student of Pauls Valley High School.

Hawkins is facing multiple charges, including shooting with intent to kill. He’s pleaded not guilty and remains in custody on $1 million bond.

Texas state Rep. James Talarico, the Democratic candidate for US Senate, greets supporters at a primary election watch party in Austin, Texas, on March 3, 2026.

Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Talarico announced a first-quarter fundraising haul of more than $27 million on Wednesday, among the largest totals reported by a US Senate candidate.

Talarico, a state representative and Presbyterian seminarian, won the Democratic nomination in March over US Rep. Jasmine Crockett. His campaign said he has raised $10 million since the March 3 primary.

Democrats are hoping Talarico will be able to put reliably red Texas in play at the statewide level as they face a tough national map for Senate control that would require them to net four seats. The Democratic state representative will face the winner of a May 26 runoff in the Republican primary between incumbent Sen. John Cornyn and state Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Talarico’s campaign has drawn comparisons to former Rep. Beto O’Rourke’s 2018 bid against Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, in which O’Rourke raised then record-sums and galvanized state Democrats, ultimately losing to Cruz by less than three points. In the first quarter of that election year, O’Rourke had raised $6.8 million, and he went on to raise a total of $80 million for the race.

No Democrat has won statewide in Texas in three decades. But Cornyn’s allies argue nominating Paxton would require Republicans to invest tens of millions of dollars in a general election.

Talarico is among several Democratic Senate candidates announcing strong first-quarter fundraising totals this week around the Wednesday deadline to file reports with the Federal Election Commission.

Georgia Sen. Jon Ossoff, who has a competitive reelection contest as the only incumbent Democrat running in a state won by President Donald Trump in 2024, said that he raised $14 million in the first quarter and would report over $31 million in cash on hand.

Meanwhile, former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, running in another battleground contest pivotal to Democratic hopes of flipping the Senate, said that he raised $13.8 million.

Cooper’s opponent, former RNC chair Michael Whatley, announced that he had raised $5 million in the first quarter.

Former Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown, running to return to the Senate, raised $12.5 million in the quarter, after losing reelection to Sen. Bernie Moreno in 2024. Brown is likely to face Republican Sen. Jon Husted, appointed last year to Vice President JD Vance’s seat, in another closely watched race

Democratic candidates in contested primaries in Maine and Michigan – two more states the party must win in order to chart a path back to the majority – also reflected the enthusiasm among donors.

Graham Platner, the Maine veteran and oyster farmer, raised $4 million for his Senate campaign in the first quarter, outraising his primary rival, Gov. Janet Mills, who brought in $2.6 million. The winner will take on GOP Sen. Susan Collins, a resilient incumbent already backed by pledges of more than $40 million in outside spending.

And in Michigan, state Rep. Mallory McMorrow brought in $3 million, just ahead of Abdul El-Sayed, who raised $2.25 million. Rep. Haley Stevens, another top Democratic contender, has not yet announced her totals.

Former Rep. Mike Rogers, the lead GOP candidate, has not announced his totals either, but like Collins in Maine, Rogers is backed by pledges of tens of millions of dollars in outside spending support.
