US appeals court lets Trump continue ending deportation protections

    February 9, 2026 11:49 PM UTC / Reuters

Feb 9 (Reuters) – A U.S. appeals court in California on Monday temporarily lifted a federal judge’s order that had blocked the Trump administration from ending deportation protections for nearly 89,000 migrants from Honduras, Nepal and Nicaragua.

The 9th U.S. Court of Appeals said the government could likely prove there were “legitimate” reasons to end Temporary Protected Status for immigrants from those countries and paused a California federal judge’s ruling against the administration for the duration of the appeal.

“TPS was never designed to be permanent, yet previous administrations have used it as a de facto amnesty program for decades,” U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said on X in response to the decision. “Given the improved situation in each of these countries, we are wisely concluding what was intended to be a temporary designation.”

Attorneys and spokespeople for the National TPS Alliance, which represents the migrants, did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the ruling.

TPS provides deportation relief and work permits to people already in the U.S. if their home countries experience a natural disaster, armed conflict or other extraordinary event. Trump has sought to end most TPS enrollment as part of a broader effort to restrict immigration.

U.S. District Judge Trina Thompson in San Francisco blocked Noem in December from ending TPS for migrants from Honduras, Nepal and Nicaragua, finding the administration failed to adequately consider conditions in the three countries that would prevent them from returning. Thompson also said the terminations may have been motivated by racial animus, citing statements from Noem and Republican President Donald Trump portraying immigrants as criminals and a drain on U.S. society.

A unanimous three-judge 9th Circuit panel said on Monday, however, that the terminations may not have been eligible for court review. The panel also said the government could likely show that Noem appropriately considered conditions in the countries before ending the migrants’ TPS.

The three judges were appointed by Trump, Republican President George W. Bush and Democratic President Bill Clinton.

Trump threatens to bar the new US-Canada bridge from opening, demands talks with Ottawa

    February 10, 2026 12:31 AM UTC / Reuters

WASHINGTON, Feb 9 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to bar the new $4.6 billion bridge connecting Detroit and Windsor, Ontario from opening, in his latest salvo against Canada over trade issues.

Trump cited Canada’s ownership of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, its refusal to stock some U.S. alcoholic beverages on Canadian store shelves, Canada’s tariffs on dairy products and its trade talks with China.

“I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and also, importantly, Canada treats the United States with the Fairness and Respect that we deserve,” Trump said on social media. “We will start negotiations, IMMEDIATELY. With all that we have given them, we should own, perhaps, at least one half of this asset.”

In 2012, Michigan’s then-Governor Rick Snyder accepted a Canadian government offer to fund most of the new Gordie Howe bridge’s costs, and took the unusual step of using executive authority to bypass the legislature. Construction began in 2018 and the bridge is nearing completion.

    Advertisement · Scroll to continue

The U.S Homeland Security Department on January 30 published a rule declaring the bridge as an official port of entry.

The Canadian Embassy in Washington, the office of Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and the bridge authority did not immediately comment.

Senator Elissa Slotkin, a Michigan Democrat, said “canceling this project will have serious repercussions. Higher costs for Michigan businesses, less secure supply chains, and ultimately, fewer jobs.”

She added Trump is “punishing Michiganders for a trade war he started. The only reason Canada is on the verge of a trade deal with China is because President Trump has kicked them in the teeth for a year.”

In 2023, Detroit was the second-largest U.S. freight port by value and was the largest on the U.S.-Canada border, handling $126 billion of value traded by commercial trucks.

The bridge will help ease truck traffic, which is handled by the Ambassador Bridge. The Gordie Howe Bridge will cut 20 minutes off the crossing time, saving truckers $2.3 billion over 30 years, according to a University of Windsor study.

Trump has made a number of threats against Canada in his second term and drastically hike tariffs on the U.S. northern neighbor. Last month, he said he would impose a 100% tariff on Canada if it follows through on a trade deal with China.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney in January traveled to China to reset the countries’ strained relationship and reached a trade deal with Canada’s second-biggest trading partner after the U.S.

Trump also said in January the U.S would decertify Bombardier Global Express business jets and threatened 50% import tariffs on all aircraft made in Canada until Ottawa certified a number of planes produced by U.S. rival Gulfstream. The Trump administration so far has taken no actions against Canadian aircraft.

Feb 9 (Reuters) – A press freedom organization has urged Virginia’s attorney licensing body to discipline a federal prosecutor who applied for a warrant last month to search the home of a Washington Post reporter.

In a February 6 letter to the Virginia State Bar, Freedom of the Press Foundation said prosecutor Gordon D. Kromberg appeared to have withheld information from the magistrate judge who approved the warrant as part of a leak investigation.

The complaint asserted that Kromberg likely violated ethics rules by not informing the judge of the Privacy Protection Act of 1980, a law that limits searches for reporting materials.

The complaint alleged that Kromberg was likely “well aware of applicable law, but deliberately chose not to mention it,” violating a state ethics rule mandating that lawyers disclose to judges legal authorities “adverse to the position of the client.”

“We request that this office take appropriate disciplinary action, up to and including disbarment, and that it expedite disciplinary proceedings due to the dire consequences for First Amendment freedoms if illegal newsroom raids and seizures of journalists’ work product are allowed to go unchecked,” the complaint stated.

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The reporter, Hannah Natanson, has covered U.S. President Donald Trump’s campaign to fire hundreds of thousands of federal workers and shift remaining workers to implementing his agenda.

In a note to staff, Washington Post Executive Editor Matt Murray said FBI agents searched Natanson’s home and seized her electronic devices. He said she and the paper are not a target of the probe, which is linked to a government contractor accused of illegally retaining classified materials.

Prosecutors allege the contractor, Aurelio Perez-Lugones, took screenshots of classified intelligence reports and printed those documents, according to a criminal complaint.

Investigators also found documents marked “secret” in a lunchbox in Perez-Lugones’ car and in his basement, according to an FBI affidavit.

Ghislaine Maxwell told lawmakers Trump, Clinton ‘innocent of any wrongdoing’ regarding Epstein

The House Oversight Committee’s deposition of Ghislaine Maxwell ended less than an hour after it began on Monday morning, when the convicted accomplice of the late Jeffrey Epstein pleaded the Fifth Amendment.

Maxwell appeared before lawmakers virtually for a closed-door interview in the House bipartisan probe into the federal government’s handling of Epstein’s case.

Her attorney apparently told lawmakers, however, that she could not implicate neither President Donald Trump nor former President Bill Clinton in any wrongdoing.

“[B]oth President Trump and President Clinton are innocent of any wrongdoing. Ms. Maxwell alone can explain why, and the public is entitled to that explanation,” lawyer David Oscar Markus posted on X after the deposition.

Markus also told lawmakers that she would only answer questions if her prison sentence was cut short by Trump, according to the statement.

“If this Committee and the American public truly want to hear the unfiltered truth about what happened, there is a straightforward path. Ms. Maxwell is prepared to speak fully and honestly if granted clemency by President Trump. Only she can provide the complete account. Some may not like what they hear, but the truth matters,” his statement said.

Maxwell is currently serving out a 20-year sentence at a Texas prison.

“As expected, Ghislaine Maxwell took the fifth and refused to answer any questions. This is obviously very disappointing,” House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, R-Ky., told reporters after the deposition. “We had many questions to ask about the crime she and Epstein committed, as well as questions about potential co-conspirators. We sincerely want to get to the truth for the American people and justice for the survivors.”

Comer said Maxwell’s lawyer told the committee that she would only answer questions if she was granted clemency by President Donald Trump.

Maxwell did say through her attorney, however, that neither Trump nor
Democrats on the panel, who spoke after Comer, accused Maxwell of trying to lobby for a pardon and demanded that Trump publicly rule out the possibility.

“What we did get was another episode in her long-running campaign for clemency from President Trump, and President Trump could end that today,” said Rep. James Walkinshaw, D-Va. “He could rule out clemency for Ghislaine Maxwell, the monster. The question for all of us today is why hasn’t he done that?”

The former British socialite was found guilty in December 2021 of being an accomplice in Epstein’s scheme to sexually traffic and exploit female minors.

The DOJ said at the time of her sentencing that Maxwell “enticed and groomed minor girls to be abused in multiple ways.”

Comer announced lawmakers would hear from Maxwell late last month during a meeting on holding former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in contempt of Congress for refusing to appear for his Epstein probe.

“We’ve been trying to get her in for a deposition. Our lawyers have been saying that she’s going to plead the Fifth, but we have nailed down a date, Feb. 9, where Ghislaine Maxwell will be deposed by this committee,” Comer said at the time.

Contempt proceedings against the Clintons stalled, however, after they agreed via their attorneys to appear in person on Capitol Hill just days before the full House of Representatives was expected to vote on referring the pair to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for criminal charges.

Comer’s team had been in a back-and-forth with Maxwell’s attorney for months trying to nail down a date for her to speak to committee lawyers.

He agreed to delay her previous planned deposition in August after her lawyer asked him to wait until after the Supreme Court decided whether it would hear her appeal. The Supreme Court turned down Maxwell’s case in October.

She and the Clintons’ depositions are part of the House Oversight Committee’s months-long probe into how the government handled Epstein’s case.

Comer told reporters on Monday that five more depositions would happen in the coming weeks including former Victoria’s Secret CEO Les Wexner on Feb. 18, Hillary Clinton on Feb. 26, Bill Clinton on Feb. 27, Epstein accountant Richard Khan on March 11, and Epstein attorney Darren Indyke on March 19.
