Trump, Netanyahu to meet at White House in high-stakes talks on Iran, Gaza plan

Israeli prime minister aims to shape scope of talks as US and Iranian officials resume discussions in Oman

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet President Donald Trump at the White House on Wednesday in a visit expected to center on Iran, as Washington weighs diplomacy against the threat of military action and Israel pushes to shape the scope of negotiations.

Trump has signaled the Iranian file will dominate the agenda. In a phone interview with Axios, the president said Tehran “very much wants to reach a deal,” but warned, “Either we make a deal, or we’ll have to do something very tough — like last time.”

Netanyahu, speaking before departing Israel for Washington, said he intends to present Israel’s position. “I will present to the president our concept regarding the principles of the negotiations — the essential principles that are important not only to Israel but to anyone who wants peace and security in the Middle East,” he told reporters.

The meeting comes days after U.S. and Iranian officials resumed talks in Oman for the first time since last summer’s 12-day war, while the United States continues to maintain a significant military presence in the Gulf — a posture widely viewed as both deterrence and for holding leverage in negotiations with Tehran.

From the U.S. perspective, Iran is seen as a global security challenge rather than a regional one, according to Jacob Olidort, chief research officer and director of American security at the America First Policy Institute. “It’s an important historic time of potentially seismic proportions,” he told Fox News Digital.

“Iran is not so much a Middle East issue. It’s a global issue affecting U.S. interests around the world,” he added, calling the regime “probably the world’s oldest global terror network… [with] thousands of Americans killed through proxies.”

Olidort said the administration’s strategy appears to combine diplomacy with visible military pressure. “The president has been clear… should talks not be successful, the military option cannot be off the table,” he said. “Military assets in the region serve as part of the negotiation strategy with Iran.”

For Israel, the main concern is not only Iran’s nuclear program but also its ballistic missile arsenal and regional network of armed groups.

Trump indicated to Axios that the United States shares at least part of that view, saying any agreement would need to address not only nuclear issues but also Iran’s ballistic missiles.

Israeli intelligence expert Sima Shein has warned that negotiations narrowly focused on nuclear restrictions could leave Israel exposed. “The visit signals a lack of confidence that American envoys, Witkoff and Kushner, alone can represent Israel’s interests in the best way. They were in Israel just a week ago — but Netanyahu wants to speak directly with Trump, so there is no ambiguity about Israel’s position,” she added.

[TRUMP SAYS IRAN CALLED ‘NUMEROUS’ TIMES TO MAKE DEAL AS CARRIER ENTERS MIDDLE EAST WATERS]

Shein says Iran may be stalling diplomatically to see whether Washington limits talks to nuclear issues while avoiding missile constraints. Her analysis further suggests that a sanctions-relief agreement that leaves Iran’s broader capabilities intact could stabilize the regime at a moment of internal pressure while preserving its military leverage.

“An agreement now would effectively save the regime at a time when it has no real solutions to its internal problems. Lifting sanctions through a deal would give it breathing room and help stabilize it,” she said.

“If there is an agreement, the United States must demand the release of all detainees and insist on humanitarian measures, including medical support for those who have been severely injured. Washington would need to be directly involved in enforcing those provisions.”

Netanyahu said before leaving Israel that he and Trump would discuss “a series of topics,” including Gaza, where a U.S.-backed postwar framework and ceasefire implementation remain stalled.

According to Israeli reporting, Netanyahu plans to tell Trump that phase two of the Gaza peace plan “is not moving,” reflecting continued disputes over disarmament, governance and security arrangements.

The timing of Netanyahu’s visit may also allow him to avoid returning to Washington the following week for the inaugural session of the Board of Peace, Shein said, noting the initiative is controversial in Israel’s parliament.

“Israel is deeply concerned about the presence of Turkey and Qatar on the board of peace and their malign influence on other members as well as on the Palestinian authority’s technocratic government,” Dan Diker, president of the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs, told Fox News Digital.

“Hamas’s control of Gaza has not weakened, while international commitments to disarm Hamas have appeared to weaken,” he added, “The longer the U.S. waits before taking action against the Iranian regime, the more compromised Israel is in its ability and determination to forcibly disarm Hamas, both of which require the sanction and the blessing of the new international structures on Gaza.”

“The prime minister’s deep concern is the stalled state of affairs both against the Iranian regime and apparently in Gaza. Timing is critical on both fronts. And for Israel, the window seems to be closing,” Diker said.

DNC tallied over $7 million in grassroots fundraising last month

    February 11, 2026 / 5:00 AM EST / CBS News

The Democratic National Committee raised over $7.4 million through small dollar-focused fundraising last month, an official told CBS News, giving the party one of its strongest grassroots starts to the year on record ahead of this fall’s midterms as it tries to claw back lost political ground.

The party reached that mark partially due to appeals from Democratic Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly, a potential 2028 presidential candidate, and interest tied to a new voter registration push, according to the official. The fundraising follows last November’s off-year elections, where voters gave Democrats major wins in the Virginia and New Jersey governor races even as the DNC faced a challenging financial picture.

“Our momentum is building across the country, from Democrats sweeping local elections and flipping long-held Republican seats, to record-setting small dollar fundraising and volunteer sign-ups,” DNC Executive Director Roger Lau said in a statement. “We are harnessing this energy to support Democratic candidates across the map, win big in November’s elections, and put a check on Trump’s reckless administration.”

Election dynamics and recent election wins already have some Democrats eying the potential of a blue wave in this fall’s midterms as the party tries to push past the last presidential election cycle, when it lost control of the presidency and the Senate while falling short of retaking the House.

Momentum in that direction, however, has come at the same time that the party faces a fraught financial gap compared to its GOP counterpart that could end up carrying major implications down the ballot.

The Republican National Committee brought in more than $172 million last year, and headed into 2026 with $95 million in the bank. Over that same span, the DNC raised close to $146 million and closed 2025 with $14 million left over and $17.5 million in debts.

Both parties have until Feb. 20 to report their January 2026 finances to the Federal Election Commission. The $7.4 million in grassroots dollars is expected to be part, but not all, of the DNC’s total fundraising haul for the month. The DNC’s grassroots fundraising figures include donations that were raised through channels like email, texts and online ads.

Republicans are already using their 2025 financial advantage as a potential proof point that President Trump and his GOP could defy normal political gravity come November, when every House seat is on the ballot and control of the Republican-held Senate is also on the line.

“President Trump’s record is driving historic grassroots support and giving Republican candidates the opportunity to defy history in the midterms,” RNC spokeswoman Kiersten Pels said in a text message.

“Democrats and their left-wing allies are preparing to flood the midterms with outside money, which is exactly why the RNC has built this war chest — to go toe-to-toe with that spending, conduct targeted voter outreach, and support President Trump and our candidates nationwide.”

The DNC’s debt is tied in with a large line of credit opened before the November 2025 contests meant in part to help bolster party infrastructure. In an interview with CBS News last year, Martin characterized the line of credit as a “big bet” that allowed the party to invest heavily in those off-year races, and argued the party “won big.”

Republicans hold a narrow majority in the House, and Democrats have a strong path to potentially winning back the chamber for the final two years of Mr. Trump’s time in the White House. Flipping the Senate from GOP control is a far more stark challenge.

For Democrats to win back the Senate this fall, they would likely have to hold on to every seat they currently have that is also on the ballot and also flip four seats from a competitive batch of contests in North Carolina, Maine, Ohio, Alaska, Texas and Iowa.

All of that sets the table for what is expected to be an expensive and tense midterm election, making the larger money game in American politics even more critical. And in recent weeks, the DNC has at times turned to Kelly, the battleground senator from Arizona, to help bring in cash.

This winter, Kelly has been mired in a tense confrontation with Mr. Trump’s Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth that has been evoked in DNC small-dollar asks.

Hegseth directed an investigation into Kelly after he participated in a video with other lawmakers reminding service members they don’t have to follow illegal orders. In a January social media post, Hegseth claimed that Kelly and his fellow Democrats had “released a reckless and seditious video that was clearly intended to undermine good order and military discipline,” and said the Pentagon was initiating proceedings to reduce Kelly’s rank and retirement pay over “seditious statements — and his pattern of reckless misconduct.”

Shortly after, Kelly sued the Pentagon for allegedly retaliating against him in violation of the First Amendment for comments he made years after he served in the military. Kelly and the Justice Department argued their cases in court last week and a judge said he would rule within the next few weeks.

And on Tuesday, a federal grand jury turned down an effort by the Justice Department to criminally charge Kelly and five other lawmakers over the video, CBS News reported.

An elected official lending their name to help the national party is incredibly common. But the situation Kelly finds himself in is one that carries major implications in Washington — and has pushed him further into the national spotlight while providing fodder for donor emails that helped the DNC raise money last month.

“Pete Hegseth can threaten to reduce my rank and my pension. But I am not going to let him intimidate me, or anyone else,” Kelly said in one January DNC fundraising email. “He is not going to stop me from defending our democracy from a president who is hellbent on destroying it.”

Eleanor Watson, Fin Daniel Gómez and Anne Bryson contributed to this report.

    Palantir

    Palantir

How Palantir and AI money is shaping the midterms

“He’s running from his past, while ICE is in our communities,” the ad’s narrator says.

The target of the ad is Alex Bores, a congressional candidate in New York City who used to work for Palantir, the tech company with long ties to defense and intelligence agencies.

An image flashes of Bores’ LinkedIn page. The narrator notes Palantir’s work with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, whose operations in New York City have sparked outcry on the left.

“ICE is powered by Bores’ tech. Manhattan is smarter than that,” the narrator says.

In a twist, the ad is backed by some of the very industry forces it condemns. The super PAC behind it is an affiliate of a new political committee, Leading The Future, launched last summer by a group of tech giants – including Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale – to confront a growing bipartisan backlash to artificial intelligence ahead of the midterm elections.

“Listen, we are on the verge of something amazing for our civilization, right?” Lonsdale said on CNBC in November. “But you have a lot of crazy populists, you have a patchwork of just really intense stuff they are doing that would just break all of this. And we can’t let that happen.”

Palantir executives and leaders from OpenAI and venture capital are wading into the political fray, with more than $100 million already pledged by Leading the Future to boost candidates friendly to AI. They’re also cutting big checks to congressional leaders and President Donald Trump’s political network.

The stakes are especially high this year. Congress is poised to craft the rules of the road for industry for the next decade or longer, and voters are growing increasingly worried about the consequences of AI development, from energy bills to privacy to job loss. Underscoring the tension, several Democrats have been pressured to return campaign contributions from Palantir-linked donors.

“The recent surge in election-related activities of big tech companies such as Palantir and OpenAI can be understood as preemptive measures against potential fallouts from the election,” said Syracuse University professor Hamid Ekbia, the founding director of the Academic Alliance for AI Policy. “Palantir, in specific, is in a vulnerable position because of recent revelations about its heavy involvement with ICE activities.”

Assemblymember Alex Bores speaks at the State Capitol in Albany New York, in May 2025.

    Kena Betancur/AP

Bores, who led one of the first major efforts to regulate artificial intelligence at the state level in New York, accused Leading The Future and its industry backers of hypocrisy.

“I quit their company over its ICE contract, choosing principle over my career and millions of dollars. They profited off of it, and are now using those funds to lie to New Yorkers and attack me,” he said in a statement.

Palantir did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

    A look at the money

Two prominent Palantir stakeholders have been active midterm donors: Peter Thiel, a co-founder and billionaire venture capitalist with close ties to Vice President JD Vance and others in the Trump administration, and the company’s CEO, Alex Karp.

Both Karp and Thiel gave hundreds of thousands of dollars last year to committees aligned with Republican congressional leadership, according to FEC records. Thiel’s giving in 2025 signals reengagement after he largely sat out the 2024 election cycle. Karp has a more enigmatic donor history.

FEC records show that in 2023, Karp gave $360,000 to the joint fundraising committee for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. A year later, he contributed $1 million to MAGA Inc.

Artificial intelligence has been a boon for Palantir, which has seen its market capitalization skyrocket by more than 1000% since 2022. The defense tech firm has worked to leverage AI alongside its expertise organizing data and logistics.

“Our rise has been, and we believe will continue to be, driven by an increasingly discerning set of companies and institutions in the United States that understand the value of artificial intelligence,” Karp wrote to shareholders this week.

And he’s been an outspoken advocate for AI development, framing the argument in absolutist terms.

“We are going to be the dominant player, or China is going to be the dominant player, and there will just be very different rules depending on who wins,” Karp said on “The Axios Show” last year. “So, when people are worried about surveillance, of course, there are huge dangers there, but you know, you will have far fewer rights if America’s not in the lead.”

Leading the Future, the industry-funded PAC, raised more than $50 million in the second half of 2025, including $25 million from OpenAI president and co-founder Greg Brockman and his wife, Anna, as well as $25 million from the venture capital firm a16z, according to Federal Election Commission records.

Jesse Hunt, a strategist working with LTF, argued that a fractured regulatory landscape is a threat to American competitiveness.

The tech industry is pushing for a federal standard that would preempt state laws. Trump has voiced support for a moratorium on state regulations, signing an executive order to do so, and Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz proposed legislation to that end.

“How doomer do we get here and how restrictive are the policies that one is advocating for?” Hunt asked. “Ultimately, what we don’t want to do is stunt innovation and allow what is now the global leader in artificial intelligence and the innovation sector to flatline because policymakers fall prey to fringe ideology.”

An effort to organize on the other side

LTF – and its opponents – expect to face off this year across New York, California, Texas, Illinois and Ohio.

Countering LTF is Public First, an organization led by former Oklahoma Democratic Rep. Brad Carson and former Utah Republican Rep. Chris Stewart.

The group is aiming to raise $50 million in funding and says it will “focus on electing candidates who champion responsible tech policies that reduce harm and protect against AI’s worst risks.”

“What we’re trying to do at Public First is, in many ways, saving AI from itself,” said Carson. “Because left alone, this kind of no touch approach is going to lead to an incredible public backlash that is already brewing. People are already sharpening their pitchforks.”

While emphasizing that “we haven’t made any formal decisions about who we’re going to support or not yet,” the group pointed to candidates like Bores, who sponsored the Responsible AI Safety and Education, or RAISE, Act while serving in the New York state legislature.

When it takes effect in March, the legislation will require AI companies to come up with safety protocols aimed at preventing “critical harm” – such as “the creation or use of a chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear weapon,” the bill states, or the conduct of a crime – and report incidents in development and operations, like data breaches or dangerous malfunctions.

Gov. Kathy Hochul, who is running for reelection this year, signed it into law last year and called out AI policy challenges in her State of the State address last month.

“We will not allow technology to undermine our infrastructure, and we won’t let it undermine our democracy either,” Hochul said.

A Gallup survey last year found that 80% of Americans believe the government should maintain rules for AI safety and data security, “even if it means developing AI capabilities more slowly.” And there are bipartisan concerns about AI data centers driving up utility bills along with potential job losses and industry disruptions.

And a loose and politically broad coalition, from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to former Trump strategist Steve Bannon, both Republicans, to independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, is determined to preserve states’ rights to make their own rules.

“Let’s not try to act like some type of fake videos or fake songs are going to deliver us to some kind of utopia,” DeSantis said at a December event in Sebring, Florida, touting his proposal for state legislation – a “Citizen Bill of Rights for AI” – providing privacy protections, national security restrictions, and regulations for data center construction.

Palantir faces attack in Democratic primaries

Long controversial with liberals, Palantir is already coming up in midterm debates.

Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi, the front-runner in the Illinois Senate Democratic primary, was challenged in a recent primary debate for his history of campaign contributions from Palantir Chief Technology Officer Shyam Sankar, totaling just over $29,000 since 2015, including $7,000 last year.

“You already demonstrated that you’re not going to show up when it matters – to take money from one of the ICE contractors, the Chief Technology Officer of Palantir, and that funds your campaign, that demonstrates that that’s not what’s your priority,” said Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, one of Krishnamoorthi’s rivals.

“As for the donation that I received from a Palantir exec, when it came to my attention, we donated it to Illinois migrant rights groups,” Krishnamoorthi responded.

Other Democrats are also returning campaign contributions from Palantir as public scrutiny grows – including an online tracker highlighting top recipients of political donations linked to the company.

In Colorado, where Palantir is headquartered, Sen. John Hickenlooper and Rep. Jason Crow both announced this week that, like Krishnamoorthi, they’d give tens of thousands of dollars to immigrant rights groups to offset years of donations from Palantir employees, after the Colorado Sun made multiple inquiries about their fundraising records.

The company’s lightning-rod status also reflects broader concerns about artificial intelligence and its consequences.

Signage for Palantir is seen during the Association of the United States Army annual meeting and exposition in Washington, DC, in October 2024.

    Nathan Howard/Reuters

“I have yet to see AI solve cancer, and I would love to see it right now,” said Reed Showalter, a Democratic antitrust attorney running in Illinois’ 7th District. “The consequences have largely been increased costs for electricity and water and a medium-term decrease in employment and wages for the people in both the district, the state, and the country.”

Stewart, the former Utah Republican congressman with Public First, acknowledged the difficulty policymakers face grappling with a poorly understood and rapidly developing technology.

“All of us are trying to develop, you know, more thoughtful answers on this, because this is such a new issue,” Stewart said, adding that “it’s not a partisan issue right now, and I hope it doesn’t become a partisan issue.”

He urged candidates to take voters’ concerns seriously and offer specific solutions on how to deal with AI’s immediate effects.

“In all my 12 years in Congress, I don’t remember ever having a conversation with someone about electrical bills, right? And it’s gonna come up,” he said. “And they’ve got to be prepared to, you know, not just kind of shrug and say, ‘yeah, it’s a problem.’ We’ve got to be prepared to say, ‘this is what we think we should do.’”

Kevin Dietsch / Getty Images

House to vote on the SAVE America Act as GOP makes election bill push

    February 11, 2026 / 7:52 AM EST / CBS News

Washington — The House is set to vote Wednesday on the SAVE America Act, which would implement strict new requirements for registering to vote and casting ballots, moves that Democrats have warned would disenfranchise millions of eligible voters.

The SAVE America Act would require documentation that shows proof of citizenship, like a passport or a birth certificate, to register to vote in federal elections. It would also implement photo ID requirements for voting itself, another GOP priority. The bill is the latest iteration of a measure House Republicans have sought to pass through both chambers for several years.

Republicans have lauded the measure as a reasonable way to prevent noncitizens from casting ballots, though instances of noncitizens voting are exceedingly rare.

“Common-sense legislation to just ensure that American citizens decide American elections — it really is that simple,” House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, said Tuesday.

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson, joined by House Republican Conference Chair Rep. Lisa McClain and House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, speaks at a press conference at the U.S. Capitol on Feb. 10, 2026. Kevin Dietsch / Getty Images

Johnson pointed to polling that shows high levels of support for showing proof of citizenship and photo ID to vote. An October 2024 poll from Gallup found that 83% of Americans back a policy to require people who are registering to vote for the first time to provide proof of citizenship. And a poll from the Pew Research Center published last August found 83% of Americans favor requiring voters to show government-issued photo ID to vote.

But Democrats and some experts have argued that the bill would have implications for millions of Americans who don’t have access to documents proving their citizenship.

“If you’re one of the 50% of Americans who doesn’t have a passport, or if you’re one of the tens of millions of Americans who can’t quickly access your birth certificate, the SAVE Act could, in effect, take away your right to vote,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, said on the Senate floor Monday, calling the legislation “extreme.”

President Trump has called on Republicans to support the legislation, saying “we won’t have a country any longer” if it’s not enacted. Mr. Trump has said it’s essential that all voters show identification and proof of citizenship. But he’s also gone a step further and demanded an end to mail-in ballots, with some exceptions.

Johnson has expressed confidence in the legislation’s passage in the House.

“Despite the vehement and incoherent and frankly ridiculous opposition from Democrats, Republicans will continue to stand with the overwhelming majority of Americans who want secure elections,” Johnson said. “We’re going to do the right thing, we’re going to do the common-sense thing, and we’re going to pass this.”

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized the legislation Monday and accused Republicans of adopting “voter suppression as an electoral strategy.”

“That’s what the so-called SAVE Act is all about,” he said. “And this version is worse than the last version.”

The New York Democrat insisted that “it’s not going to pass,” adding that if it “squeaks by the House, it’s dead on arrival in the Senate.”

Earlier versions of the bill have passed the House twice, with support from a handful of Democrats. But a 60-vote threshold for advancing most legislation in the Senate makes passage in the upper chamber unlikely, and GOP leaders have yet to take up the measure.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, a South Dakota Republican, has faced intense pressure in recent weeks to move forward with the bill. The legislation’s proponents have called on him to use a maneuver known as a talking filibuster to sidestep the 60-vote threshold for ending debate, but doing so would eat up valuable floor time and enable Democrats to offer unlimited amendments.

Senate Republicans discussed how to move forward with the legislation at their conference lunch Tuesday, multiple senators said. Sen. Mike Lee, a Utah Republican, who’s led the push on the talking filibuster in the upper chamber, said a presentation on the maneuver was well-received.

Sen. Mike Rounds, a South Dakota Republican, told reporters “it’s been a good discussion,” but he called the talking filibuster “very unworkable.”

“Nonetheless, it’s one of those things that some of the folks have got an interest in,” Rounds said. “We’re going to continue to do some more research on it. Reality is, I’d love to be able to see this particular SAVE Act brought in and voted on, and make our Democrat colleagues vote on the issue.”

To reach the 60-vote threshold, Senate Republicans would need support from at least seven Democrats. And already one Republican, Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, has come out against it, citing concerns about changes to elections too close to the midterms.

“Election Day is fast approaching. Imposing new federal requirements now, when states are deep into their preparations, would negatively impact election integrity by forcing election officials to scramble to adhere to new policies likely without the necessary resources,” Murkowski said on X on Tuesday. “Ensuring public trust in our elections is at the core of our democracy, but federal overreach is not how we achieve this.”

Thune said Tuesday that Senate Republicans are having a “very robust conversation” about the path forward for the legislation.

“How we get to that vote remains to be seen,” Thune added.
