President Trump is planning to deliver a prime-time address Wednesday night to “provide an important update on Iran,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt announced on X.
Leavitt did not give any other details on the address, which is set for 9 p.m. ET. But it comes at an important time in the monthlong conflict with Iran, as Mr. Trump publicly signals that he is looking to strike a deal with Iran and wrap the war up in a matter of weeks — and as he privately weighs whether to use ground forces, CBS News reported earlier this month.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said earlier Tuesday that the “upcoming days will be decisive.”
Mr. Trump told reporters Tuesday afternoon he expects the war with Iran to end in “two weeks, maybe three,” arguing that the U.S.’s core objective of degrading Iran’s military has largely been achieved. He has also said any countries that rely on Middle Eastern petroleum should be responsible for getting their oil through the Strait of Hormuz themselves, hinting that the U.S. may not take a leading role in reopening the key waterway, which Iran has effectively shut down.
The president told CBS News’ Weijia Jiang on Tuesday he isn’t prepared to withdraw U.S. forces from efforts to push Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz “quite yet,” but other countries “have to come in and take care of it.”
Mr. Trump has also expressed some optimism about the state of U.S.-Iran peace talks in recent days. Iran has denied that it is negotiating with the U.S., but confirmed that the two sides have exchanged messages through mediators.
At the same time, hundreds of U.S. Special Operations Forces — including Navy SEALS and Army Rangers — are now in the Middle East, along with Marines and Army paratroopers, giving Mr. Trump options to potentially expand the scope of the war, CBS News has reported.
Earlier this month, Pentagon officials began preparing options for deploying ground forces to Iran. The Trump administration has strategized whether to launch a high-risk mission to use Special Operations Forces to seize Iran’s stockpile of highly enriched uranium, sources told CBS News earlier this month, though he had not appeared to make a decision at that point.
There’s also been public discussion about whether the U.S. will order some kind of operation against Kharg Island, an Iranian territory that handles most of the country’s oil exports.
“Great progress has been made but, if for any reason a deal is not shortly reached, which it probably will be, and if the Hormuz Strait is not immediately ‘Open for Business,’ we will conclude our lovely ‘stay’ in Iran by blowing up and completely obliterating all of their Electric Generating Plants, Oil Wells and Kharg Island (and possibly all desalinization plants!), which we have purposefully not yet ‘touched,’” the president wrote in a Truth Social post on Monday.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed a sweeping executive order targeting mail-in voting and voter eligibility, calling the move a major step toward restoring confidence in U.S. elections.
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump said the order is focused on “voter integrity and Mail-In ballots” and on “stopping the massive cheating that’s gone on.”
“We’re going to be signing an executive order,” Trump said. “It’s, I believe it’s foolproof… I think it’s very obvious what’s said.”
The order directs federal agencies to work with states to compile lists of eligible voters using federal citizenship and identity data, while also instructing the U.S. Postal Service to develop new safeguards for mail-in ballots, including barcode tracking and verification measures.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the administration is pushing for a system that ties each ballot to a trackable envelope.
“If you voted by mail, you will have it on the envelope,” Lutnick said. “There’ll be a million envelopes… and you’ll be able to know exactly correctly, that citizens voted.”
Trump said additional election-related measures, including voter ID and proof of citizenship requirements, are also under consideration.
“We’d like to have voter ID, we’d like to have proof of citizenship… we’re working on that,” he said.

A federal judge in Boston on Tuesday directed the Trump administration to restore the legal status of migrants allowed into the U.S. under a now-defunct Biden administration program for asylum-seekers who arrived at the southern border.
U.S. District Court Judge Allison Burroughs voided the Trump administration’s decision to end the immigration parole status of migrants who entered the country under the Biden-era CBP Home policy, finding that the move violated procedures outlined in U.S. law. That program relied on a phone app that the second Trump administration has since repurposed and renamed as CBP Home to facilitate self-deportations of those in the U.S. illegally.
More than 900,000 migrants from countries across the globe were allowed into the U.S. at official ports of entry along the southern border under the CBP One system. It’s unclear how many will benefit from the ruling since some may have been deported already or gained another lawful status.
The Justice Department is likely to appeal the ruling.
At the time, the Biden administration argued the CBP One program reduced illegal immigration by giving would-be border crossers the chance to enter the U.S. with the government’s permission.
But Trump administration officials have argued that the Biden administration did not have authority to create such a program and that it violated U.S. immigration law by allowing hundreds of thousands of migrants to enter the country outside of the traditional legal immigration system.
In April 2025, the Department of Homeland Security announced it was terminating the parole status of those processed under the CBP One program, urging them to self-deport or face the prospect of being found, arrested and forcibly deported.
In a statement Tuesday, DHS said it had the power to revoke the parole status of those allowed in by the Biden administration.
“We disagree with this blatant judicial activism undermining the President’s Article II authority to determine who remains in this country,” DHS said. “The Biden Administration abused the parole authority under the disastrous CBP One program to allow millions of illegal aliens into the U.S. which further fueled the worst border crisis in U.S. history.”
Skye Perryman, President and CEO of Democracy Forward, a group that challenged the parole terminations in federal court, said Tuesday’s order rejected “a harmful and destabilizing policy.”
“Today’s ruling is a clear rejection of an administration that has tried to erase lawful status for hundreds of thousands of people with the click of a button,” Perryman said. “Our clients followed the law: they waited, registered, were inspected, and were granted parole under the law.”
