The Justice Department’s ongoing struggle with redactions in the released records related to Jeffrey Epstein continued Wednesday when it was discovered that the face of an undercover person was left uncovered in a video.

The department requested CNN make the face of an undercover person unidentifiable in a published video of a sting operation to obtain a black book of Epstein’s contacts.

The 2009 video shows Epstein’s former Palm Beach house manager Alfredo Rodriguez trying to sell a little black book of addresses and phone numbers, claiming it contained powerful people and victims of Epstein, to the undercover person.

“You will see a lot of important people here,” Rodriguez says in the video, adding that the book includes phone numbers for underage girls.

After this video was published by CNN, the Justice Department said it failed to obscure the face of an undercover person in the video, when it included in the most recent dump of Epstein documents. CNN has updated its video with the face of the undercover person obscured.

The original link where the video was found no longer includes the document.

CNN had reached out to the FBI and Justice Department before initially publishing the video. The FBI told CNN to contact the Justice Department, which did not return requests for comment Wednesday.

The video was taken two years after the FBI demanded Rodriguez turn over any Epstein documents, according to court documents. Rodriguez instead tried to sell the book for $50,000, those documents say.

Rodriguez also claimed in the video that Ghislaine Maxwell — Epstein’s longtime co-conspirator who has since been convicted for her role in the crimes and is currently in prison — kept a database of girls, which included naked images.

“The teenagers, they had braces,” Rodriguez says. He did not, however, provide evidence of the alleged database’s existence.

The video shows the undercover person hand Rodriguez a bag of cash before ending.

The former house manager was later arrested for failing to turn over the book as evidence but claimed it was his property and “insurance policy,” worrying that Epstein would make him “disappear,” according to court records.

He eventually pleaded guilty to obstruction charges and was sentenced to 18 months in prison. Rodriguez died in 2014.

It’s not the first instance that the Justice Department failed to redact certain information in the millions of files released on Epstein.

The department continues to face severe backlash over publishing documents that included the names of victims and over-redacting information related to those who may have aided Epstein in his crimes.

Cybersecurity experts explain how surveillance footage of Nancy Guthrie’s home was recovered

Investigators with the FBI and Pima County Sheriff’s Department said they were able to recover footage from a Google Nest camera outside the Arizona home of Nancy Guthrie — the missing mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie — by extracting “residual data located in backend systems,” raising new questions about how it was possible to retain the video.

Retired special agent Jason Pack told CBS News that locating the missing footage of a masked individual outside Guthrie’s door was “like finding a needle in a haystack,” providing a breakthrough authorities needed more than a week after she was reported missing.

But many are questioning how footage was recovered from a doorbell camera that officials said was disconnected with no active subscription to store video. With a free Google Nest plan, the video should have been deleted within 3 to 6 hours — long after Guthrie was reported missing.

How doorbell cameras store data

Although Nest users with a free plan cannot access cannot access recordings past a certain time frame, cybersecurity experts say doorbell cameras, like Guthrie’s, have built-in backup mechanisms that enable them to store data across multiple layers, which makes short-term recovery possible.

“Internal storage uses a very lazy deletion mechanism, so the data wouldn’t be available to users who didn’t pay,” cybersecurity expert Alex Stamos explained to CBS News. “The video for non-subscribers would be marked for deletion, but depending on the exact implementation details, the actual files might not be deleted for days and the actual data wouldn’t be overwritten until the storage was needed.”

Patrick Jackson, a former NSA data researcher and the chief technology officer for privacy and security company Disconnect, added, “There’s kind of this old saying that data is never deleted, it’s just renamed. And I think this is a perfect, you know, showing of this where once this data’s uploaded, they may mark it for deletion, but it may never get deleted.”

Jackson said most doorbell cameras also have a tamper mode, a security feature that alerts a user when a device is being disconnected or damaged. He believes this may serve as a signal for companies to hold onto data for a longer period of time.

“From Google’s server perspective, it knows if that device goes offline,” Jackson said. “And so if the last event was tamper detected, and it’s a motion event, it could tag it in a way where Google may not delete that and may know that this could have some value to some law enforcement.”

Jackson said there’s nothing in the terms of service that would prevent Google from activating this feature and retaining video for a longer period of time. He suspects most users aren’t aware of this potential feature.

Implications for future investigations

“This is Google tipping their hand for potentially a capability that maybe they’ve never disclosed,” Jackson said. “And maybe this rose to the occasion where they felt, OK, you know, we do have this ability, we’re going to use it for this occasion.”

According to Google’s cloud storage protection backup recovery overview, “Cloud Storage offers a variety of options to help you protect your data from accidental or malicious deletion and recover your data in the event of a disaster. These options can be useful for legal or regulatory compliance, as well as for protecting data that is critical to your business.”

FBI Director Kash Patel told Fox News that authorities executed lawful searches and turned to private sector companies to “expedite results and then go into their systems and actually excavate material that people would think would normally be deleted and no one would look for.”

In a transparency report, Nest explained how the company responds to court orders or requests from law enforcement.

“When we get a request for user information, we review it carefully and only provide information within the scope and authority of the request. Privacy and security are incredibly important to us. Before complying with a request, we make sure it follows the law and Nest’s policies. We notify users about legal demands when appropriate, unless prohibited by law or court order. And if we think a request is overly broad, we’ll seek to narrow it,” the company stated online.

Jackson said the recovery of critical footage from Guthrie’s free account could open Google up to a flood of future law enforcement inquiries.

“We’re not the only ones as consumers looking at this kind of alarm,” Jackson said. “Law enforcement folks are looking at this as like, oh, this could be a new capability that we could add to our pipeline for when we’re trying to source video footage.”

CBS News has reached out to Google for comment on the Nest footage. A Google spokesperson previously told CBS News, “We are assisting law enforcement with their investigation,” and adding that “this is an ongoing investigation, and we cannot share further details at this time.”

House Republican rebels join Democrats to block Trump’s Canada tariffs | Fox News

The House of Representatives passed legislation Wednesday aimed at reversing President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada after several Republicans joined Democrats for a rare rebuke of the GOP commander in chief.

Democrats successfully got a vote on a measure to reverse Trump’s national emergency at the northern border using a mechanism for forcing votes over the objections of House majority leadership called a privileged resolution.

The six Republicans who voted in favor of the measure are Reps. Dan Newhouse, R-Wash., Kevin Kiley, R-Calif., Don Bacon, R-Neb., Jeff Hurd, R-Colo., and Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa.

One Democrat, Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine, voted with the majority of Republicans on the matter. It passed 219-211.

As the vote was on the verge of succeeding, Trump issued a warning to Republicans who defied him.

“Any Republican, in the House or the Senate, that votes against TARIFFS will seriously suffer the consequences come Election time, and that includes Primaries!” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Kiley told Fox News Digital when asked for a response to Trump, “This was a resolution regarding the emergency declared by the president over fentanyl from Canada. Congress has an obligation under the National Emergencies Act to evaluate every six months if the emergency still exists. Canada has now significantly cracked down on fentanyl, so there’s no basis to extend the emergency another six months.”

Meanwhile Hurd told Fox News Digital that his constituents were “directly affected by these policies.”

“Today’s vote is grounded first and foremost in the Constitution. Article I gives Congress the authority to regulate commerce with foreign nations and to levy tariffs. Over time, Congress has delegated limited authority to the Executive Branch, particularly in matters involving national emergencies. But those delegations were never intended to serve as a permanent vehicle for sweeping, long-term trade policy,” he also said.

“If we normalize broad emergency trade powers today, we should expect that a future president—of either party—will rely on the same authority in ways many of us would strongly oppose. Institutional consistency matters. The Constitution does not shift depending on who occupies the White House. My responsibility is to defend the separation of powers regardless of political convenience.”

Trump signed an executive order in February 2025, enacting an additional 25% tariff on most goods from Canada and Mexico. Energy from Canada was subject to an additional 15% tariff.

At the time, the White House said it was punishment for those countries’ unwillingness to do more to stop the flow of illegal immigrants and illicit drugs into the U.S.

Opponents of Trump’s tariff strategy have criticized his moves against Canada in particular, arguing it was unjustly harming one of the U.S.’s closest allies and trading partners to the detriment of Americans themselves.

“In the last year, tariffs have cost American families nearly $1,700. And that cost is expected to increase in 2026,” Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., who is leading the legislation, said during debate Wednesday.

“And since these tariffs were imposed, U.S. exports to Canada have fallen by more than 21%. When I go home, my constituents aren’t telling me that they have an extra $1,700 to spare. They’re asking me to lower grocery prices, lower the price of healthcare and make life more affordable.

“Canada is our friend. Canada is our ally. Canadians have fought alongside Americans, whether it was in World War II or the war in Afghanistan, where 165 Canadians gave their lives after our country was attacked. There is no national emergency, there is no national security threat underpinning these threats.”

House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Brian Mast, R-Fla., argued the text of the resolution itself would end a national emergency related to fentanyl.

“The gentleman over here, 5,000 people per year die in his state alone from fentanyl,” Mast said of Meeks. “So, if he wants to beg the question of who’s going to pay the price of him trying to end an emergency, that actually, for the first time, has Canada dealing with fentanyl because of the pressure being put on them — who’s going to pay the price? It’s going to be 5,000 more of his state’s residents. That’s who’s going to pay the price.”

He said the resolution was “not a debate about tariffs” but rather Democrats trying to “ignore that there is a fentanyl crisis.”

The resolution was filed by Democrats months ago but was put on hold by an active measure by House GOP leaders that blocked the House from reversing Trump’s emergency declarations.

The president has used emergency declarations to bypass Congress on the subject of tariffs, a move that has drawn mixed reviews from Capitol Hill.

But that measure expired last month, and House GOP leaders’ bid to extend it through July 31 crashed and burned Tuesday night when three Republicans joined Democrats to oppose it.

“It is time for Congress to make its voice heard on tariffs,” Bacon, one of the Republicans who voted in opposition to the Trump policy Tuesday and Wednesday, told Fox News Digital.

The legislation now heads to the Senate, which has voted in the past to restrict Trump’s tariff authority.

Even if it succeeds there, however, it’s likely to be vetoed the president.

Republicans urge Trump to hold firm against Democrats’ DHS demands as clock ticks toward shutdown

Republicans’ warning for President Donald Trump is growing louder with the Department of Homeland Security set to shut down in just days: Don’t feel public pressure to relent on an issue central to his campaign.

Even as the White House has engaged with Democrats over reforms to DHS, a growing chorus of members have urged Trump and his team to play hardball and instead fight for GOP priorities, like cracking down on so-called sanctuary cities in exchange for any Democratic demands on federal immigration enforcement.

One such appeal came from Missouri Republican Sen. Eric Schmitt, who golfed and watched the Superbowl with the president over the weekend. Schmitt’s view was the president didn’t need to yield to the other party’s demands, even with that critical funding deadline bearing down on Capitol Hill.

“We should not be, in any way, shape or form kneecapping ICE,” Schmitt told CNN. “President Trump ran on this issue. So again, I think this is a home game for us, and if the Democrats want to continue down this road, it’s just a loser for them.”

Bolstering Republicans’ resolve if that Trump’s signature policy bill last summer injected DHS with billions for immigration enforcement – enough, they argue, to cover operations for months, if not years, to come. The impact of a shutdown instead would be felt primarily by other program like FEMA and TSA — something they say would make it harder for Democrats to defend their position in a prolonged stalemate.

“I don’t know why we are entertaining policy initiatives on funding bills. If you want to have a debate and they want to put forth this stupid 20-point plan in legislation, let’s have the debate. They’ll lose,” Schmitt challenged. (Democrats have sent the White House a series of demands from requiring the use of body cameras for agents to reining in roving patrols.)

Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters Wednesday evening that the White House plans to soon send over new details to Democrats in their ongoing negotiations but it remains unclear if a deal can come together before funding for DHS expires Friday.

“I was at the White House 90 minutes ago, talking about that very thing. The White House is sending over a few terms — I don’t know if you’d call it a counteroffer — but they’re in negotiations with Senate Democrats,” Johnson said about the status of the talks.

“We’ll see how the Democrats receive that,” he said, though did not offer any details.

After the death of Alex Pretti, the window for a negotiation over the contentious and thorny issue of immigration enforcement tactics appeared to open in Congress, a rare but serious opportunity for lawmakers to find a middle ground on an issue that has befuddled lawmakers for decades. But after two weeks of fraught talks, stalled negotiations and public blaming, both sides appear to be recalcitrant, retreating to their long-held views on the issue.

The White House had pushed Republicans to fund the rest of the government while negotiating DHS funding separately, but conservatives are newly emboldened that the president can easily weather a partial shutdown with little political cost while blaming Democrats for being soft on immigration enforcement.

“I’ve made clear, I’m not gonna support anything that I think is detrimental to law enforcement,” Sen. Josh Hawley, a Republican from Missouri, recently told reporters on Capitol Hill.

Sen. Bernie Moreno said, in his view, “they [Democrats] can take the DHS appropriations bill or they can shut down FEMA, Coast Guard, TSA, Secret Service and CISA. That’s up to them.”

“I wouldn’t offer anything. That’s my point of view,” the Ohio Republican added.

Many Democrats, meanwhile, initially interpreted GOP comments about concerns over ICE tactics as a tacit recognition that the administration may have gone too far in its efforts to ramp up deportations in major cities around the country.

And many in the party see the death of Pretti and Renee Nicole Good at the hands of federal agents in Minneapolis as a moment of reckoning requiring them to force significant reforms to US Customs and Immigration Enforcement, even if it risks another prolonged shutdown just months after a historic shutdown yielded little in terms of concessions from the administration.

“It’s really important that Secretary Noem not allow a band of untrained officers – I’m gonna use that term loosely – to terrorize our communities,” Sen. Jacky Rosen, a Democrat from Nevada, said.

Negotiations with the White House are ongoing. Sen. Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma, a close ally of the president’s, told reporters Wednesday night that GOP leaders had offered Democrats a four-week continuing resolution to keep talks going.

However, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer is signaling his members are unlikely to back even a short-term spending bill to fund the agency while talks continue because such little progress has been made.

“We’re 3 days away from a DHS shutdown and Republicans have not gotten serious about negotiating a solution that reins in ICE and stops the violence. Democrats will not support a CR to extend the status quo,” Schumer posted on X Wednesday.

Republican leaders have suggested they may send members home Thursday for a regularly scheduled week-long recess if a deal to keep DHS funded remains too far out of reach, leaving funds to lapse.

Majority Leader John Thune, for his part, has tried for to maintain the talks are moving in the right direction. But plenty more in his party are skeptical, accusing their opponents of using the funding fight to demonstrate to their liberal base that they’re standing up to Trump’s deportation raids.

“They’re clamoring for a government shutdown,” House Majority Leader Steve Scalise told reporters Tuesday, while another top Republican, Rep. Lisa McClain, said she’s “furious with the Democrats who are so desperate to satisfy their activist base that they would rather shut down FEMA, TSA and even the Coast Guard.”

Even if leaders and the White House were able to get to reach a compromise,it’s not clear that either party would fully accept it given just how polarizing the issue of Trump’s immigration enforcement has become.

“If they make a deal, it’s going to be hard to get the Democrats and the Republicans to vote for it,” Louisiana Sen. John Kennedy said. “I think if you gave Chuck everything he wanted today, he couldn’t deliver the votes from Dems and the Republicans are gonna want a crackdown on sanctuary cities.”

President Donald Trump is threatening to back election challengers against the six House Republicans who joined Democrats in voting to reverse his tariffs on Canada.

The president sent out an ominous warning to GOP lawmakers in the House and Senate just before his agenda suffered a blow on Capitol Hill Wednesday evening.

“Any Republican, in the House or the Senate, that votes against TARIFFS will seriously suffer the consequences come Election time, and that includes Primaries!” Trump posted on Truth Social.

He argued that the trade deficit was reduced significantly while U.S. financial markets hit significant high points because of his tariff policies.

“In addition, TARIFFS have given us Great National Security because the mere mention of the word has Countries agreeing to our strongest wishes,” Trump continued.

“TARIFFS have given us Economic and National Security, and no Republican should be responsible for destroying this privilege.”

Democrats successfully got a vote on a measure to reverse Trump’s national emergency at the northern border using a mechanism for forcing votes over the objections of House majority leadership called a privileged resolution.

The six Republicans who voted in favor of the measure were Reps. Dan Newhouse, R-Wash.; Kevin Kiley, R-Calif.; Don Bacon, R-Neb.; Jeff Hurd, R-Colo.; and Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa.

One Democrat, Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine, voted with the majority of Republicans on the matter. It passed 219-211.

It’s not clear how much impact Trump’s threat will have, however.

Neither Newhouse nor Bacon is running for re-election in the 2026 midterms, and Trump is already endorsing a primary challenger against Massie.

Kiley, whose district was heavily altered by California Democrats’ new congressional map, has not yet said whether he will run for re-election or where he will do it.

He told Fox News Digital when asked for a response to Trump, “This was a resolution regarding the emergency declared by the president over fentanyl from Canada. Congress has an obligation under the National Emergencies Act to evaluate every six months if the emergency still exists. Canada has now significantly cracked down on fentanyl, so there’s no basis to extend the emergency another six months.”

Fitzpatrick and Hurd are both well-liked incumbents in their districts, which are top targets for Democrats come November.

Hurd told Fox News Digital his constituents were “directly affected by these policies.”

“Today’s vote is grounded first and foremost in the Constitution. Article I gives Congress the authority to regulate commerce with foreign nations and to levy tariffs. Over time, Congress has delegated limited authority to the executive branch, particularly in matters involving national emergencies. But those delegations were never intended to serve as a permanent vehicle for sweeping, long-term trade policy,” he added.

“If we normalize broad emergency trade powers today, we should expect that a future president — of either party — will rely on the same authority in ways many of us would strongly oppose. Institutional consistency matters. The Constitution does not shift depending on who occupies the White House. My responsibility is to defend the separation of powers regardless of political convenience.”

Trump signed an executive order in February 2025, enacting an additional 25% tariff on most goods from Canada and Mexico. Energy from Canada was subject to an additional 15% tariff.

At the time, the White House said it was punishment for those countries’ unwillingness to do more to stop the flow of illegal immigrants and illicit drugs into the U.S.

Opponents of Trump’s tariff strategy have criticized his moves against Canada in particular, arguing it was unjustly harming one of the closest allies and trading partners of the U.S. to the detriment of Americans.

But Republicans who voted against the legislation pointed out that Trump said the fentanyl crisis was the reason for issuing the emergency in the first place, adding the drug was still killing Americans.

The legislation now heads to the Senate, where Republicans have voted to rebuke Trump’s tariff strategy in the past despite similar warnings from the president.
