US fighter jet shot down over Iran, US sources say

Video verified by CNN appears to show US search efforts in Iran after a jet was downed

A US fighter jet has been shot down over Iran, three US sources said, confirming Iranian state media reports.

US forces have launched search and rescue efforts and were looking for two pilots, two of the sources said. Potential rescue efforts appeared to be captured in video posted to social media and geolocated by CNN.

The state-run Tasnim agency said that the search for any missing crew had “so far been unsuccessful.” Separately, on Fars News, an anchor said a reward was being offered for anyone capturing an “enemy pilot or pilots.”

It wasn’t immediately clear where in Iran the jet went down.

“President Trump has been briefed,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told CNN.

The US military and the White House have not commented on the situation or the status of the crew.

Video geolocated by CNN showed multiple low flying military aircraft over Khuzestan Province in central Iran as part of an apparent search and rescue operation.

In the video, one airplane can be seen flying low over the ground while two helicopters follow closely behind – a formation that is consistent with an air-to-air refueling operation. The video was taken on a bridge over the Karoon river, which is around 470 km south of Tehran.

The incident marks the first time a US aircraft has been shot down over Iran during the conflict. Near the beginning of the war, three F-15s were mistakenly shot down in a friendly fire incident by Kuwaiti air defenses.

It comes as Trump administration officials have made repeated claims that the war is essentially won, and that the US has air superiority over the country. Last month, President Donald Trump said in the Oval Office that the US has “won this, because this war has been won, the only one that likes to keep it going is the fake news.”

“[W]e literally have planes flying over Tehran and other parts of their country. They can’t do a thing about it,” Trump said.

Iranian state media released photos on Friday of what it claimed was the wreckage of a US fighter jet, showing small pieces of what appears to be an F-15. The photos show a partial logo for “US Air Forces in Europe” on a F-15 tail fin and red-and-white striping from the top of the tail fin.

Another piece of wreckage – with the words “CAUTION USE ONLY NON-MAGNETIC FASTENERS” – appears to match a rear portion of an F-15 that extends between one of its two engines and its horizontal stabilizer.

“From the structure it certainly looks like an F-15, and from the tail flash stripe markings, from the 48th Fighter Wing, based at RAF Lakenheath in the United Kingdom,” Peter Layton, a fellow at the Griffith Asia Institute and former Royal Australian Air Force officer, told CNN.

Multiple Iranian state media outlets, including Press TV, published the images along with a statement from the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) saying that Iranian forces had shot down an F-35 stealth fighter in central Iran.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Washington— President Trump’s budget proposal for fiscal year 2027 asks Congress for $1.5 trillion in defense spending — a 42% increase — while cutting nondefense spending by $73 billion, or 10%.

The White House released the 92-page budget request on Friday, accompanied by several summaries of the administration’s key priorities across the executive branch.

The proposed increase for the military comes as the U.S. is spending billions of dollars for the war in Iran, and the White House is preparing to ask Congress for a supplemental spending package to cover the cost of the conflict. The president’s 2027 budget serves as the starting point for negotiations with Congress over annual spending bills that lawmakers aim to finalize later in the year. The spending levels that Congress ultimately sets can substantially differ from the president’s proposal.

“This amount exceeds even the Ronald Reagan buildup by approaching the historic increases just prior to World War II, a level that recognizes the current global threat environment and restores the readiness and lethality of our forces,” a White House summary of the military portion of the budget proposal states. The increase in defense spending would cover a 5 to 7% pay raise for troops, provide $65.8 billion for new ships and resupply critical munition stocks, which have been depleted in the war with Iran. It also supports the building of a “Golden Dome,” a space-based system of missile defense sensors and interceptors.

The White House says the president wants to pair the defense increase with a 10% reduction in nondefense spending, partly through shifting some federal programs and responsibilities to state and local governments.

“Savings are achieved by reducing or eliminating woke, weaponized, and wasteful programs, and by returning state and local responsibilities to their respective governments,” the White House summary says.

The budget aims to “end weaponization of the Department of Justice” by eliminating nearly 30 grants the administration says are duplicative, fail to reduce crime or “weaponized against the American people.” It proposes a $481 million increase to support hiring more air traffic controllers and enhancements to aviation safety, as well as $605 million for National Guard mobilizations in Washington, D.C.

The president’s proposal calls for $768 million in cuts to the refugee resettlement program, and $819 million in cuts to the Unaccompanied Alien Children program.

It also calls for $5 billion in cuts to the National Institutes of Health, saying NIH “broke the trust of the American people,” and $356 million in cuts to the Administration for Strategic Preparedness and Response, which helps the U.S. prepare for and respond to public health emergencies.

While it boosts air traffic control and aviation safety spending, the president’s budget also calls for $52 million in cuts to the Transportation Security Administration by beginning to privatize screening at smaller airports.

The president voiced his desire to shift more spending to states during an Easter luncheon at the White House this week, insisting the federal government’s responsibilities include the military and war, not programs like daycare for young children.

“The United States can’t take care of daycare — that has to be up to a state,” the president said on Wednesday. “We can’t take care of daycare, we’re a big country. We have 50 states, we have all these other people, we’re fighting wars. We can’t take care of daycare. You’ve got to let a state take care of daycare, and they should pay for it, too. They should pay. They have to raise their taxes. But they should pay for it. And we could lower our taxes a little bit to them to make up for, but we, it’s not possible for us to take care of daycare, Medicaid, Medicare, all those individual things. They can do it on a state basis. You can’t do it on a federal. We have to take care of one thing — military protection.”

President Donald Trump’s decision to fire Attorney General Pam Bondi tees up another whirlwind confirmation in the Senate, and some in the upper chamber are already drawing lines in the sand.

The Senate confirmed Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin last month after a sprint to elevate him from lawmaker to Cabinet official following Kristi Noem’s firing. Lawmakers will again be tasked with confirming Bondi’s replacement in the coming weeks.

While Trump has selected Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche to lead the Department of Justice (DOJ) on an interim basis, speculation is swirling over who he will tap as the next attorney general.

Whoever he picks will have to go through the Senate Judiciary Committee, where Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., said in an interview with CNN that the next nominee must align with his views on the Jan. 6, 2021, riots at the U.S. Capitol.

“The threshold for somebody following Pam Bondi ends the moment I hear they say one thing that excused the events of January 6,” Tillis said. “I’ve been very clear on that. So I hope whoever they have in mind to follow General Bondi is very clear-eyed about my position on January 6.”

“That’s why I didn’t support two other nominees who were coming through the Judiciary Committee, and I won’t support any nominee who thinks any element of January 6 was excusable,” he continued.

Tillis will have a key vote on the Republican-led panel that could make or break any nominee’s chances of reaching a full Senate vote. Last year, he notably tanked Trump’s pick for top prosecutor in Washington, D.C., Ed Martin, over his comments on Jan. 6.

Trump is reportedly eyeing Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin for the job, but whether he taps another sitting senator remains an open question.

Some lawmakers in the upper chamber are reportedly pushing for Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, to get the job. But Lee — who is pushing for the Senate to pass the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act — doesn’t appear keen on the idea.

“I’m not going anywhere,” Lee said on X.

Then there is Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., who was previously under consideration for the job when Trump won in 2024.

Schmitt has a strong relationship with the president that dates back to his first campaign and has developed into regular invitations to join Trump for rounds of golf. But he turned down the job, opting to stay in the Senate after just winning his seat in 2022.

He confirmed his decision on X at the time, saying he was “just getting started” in the Senate.

“We need America First fighters who don’t just say they support the agenda but are willing to stand in the breach and actually fight for it — and for the hopes and dreams of the American people,” Schmitt said. “I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and be a champion for President Trump in the Senate.”

American fighter jet was downed over Iran, U.S. officials say

    2026-04-03 10:57 EDT / CBS News

An American F-15E fighter jet was downed over Iran, U.S. officials confirmed Friday, and a search and rescue effort is ongoing, sources said.

The F-15E is flown by a two-member crew.

Earlier Friday, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard claimed it shot down a U.S. fighter jet over the middle of the country.

Photos and video were circulating on social media, shared by Iranian state news outlets, suggesting at least one U.S. C-130 aircraft and two Black Hawk helicopters were spotted flying low over central and southwest Iran in what was described as a possible effort to locate and recover the crew.

CBS News reported earlier this week that the U.S. military had lost at least 16 MQ-9 Reaper drones over Iran since the war began, and three U.S. F-15 fighter jets were shot down over Kuwait in a “friendly fire incident” early in the conflict, but there were no casualties.

The downing of the jet Friday comes after repeated assertions by President Trump, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and military commanders of U.S. air superiority that largely deprived Iran of attack capabilities and air defenses during the war.

“Now in our fifth week of the campaign, it is my operational assessment that we are making undeniable progress. We don’t see their navy sailing. We don’t see their aircraft flying, and their air and missile defense systems have largely been destroyed,” CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper said Thursday.

A local affiliate of Iran’s state TV channel said Friday a prize being offered for anyone able to “capture the enemy pilot or pilots alive and hand them over to the police.”

The Associated Press said the TV broadcast included a written message urging viewers to shoot at any U.S. aircraft seen flying overhead.

WASHINGTON, April 3 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump on Friday proposed to begin the process of privatizing airport security operations handled by the Transportation Security Administration, the federal ‌agency created after the September 11, 2001, attacks.

The White House budget proposes cutting the TSA budget by $52 million and would require small airports to enroll in a program in which TSA pays for private screeners. TSA has about 50,000 federal employees who handle screening at nearly all U.S. airports.

Budget documents said that airports currently using the program have demonstrated savings compared to federal screening operations.

In recent weeks major U.S. airports suffered massive disruptions after Transportation Security Administration security officers went unpaid since mid-February after funding for the workers was halted in a budget dispute.

Trump fired the head of the Transportation Security Administration, David Pekoske, on his first day in office and ‌has never nominated a replacement. Last year, the White House said it wanted funding cut for the TSA by $247 million, saying the “TSA has consistently failed audits while implementing intrusive screening measures that violate Americans’ privacy and dignity.”

That budget cut represented about a 3-4% cut to the TSA staffing levels – with half for staff at exit lanes and the remaining cut of 2% of transportation security officers spread across 435 airports.

The Biden administration had increased the size of the TSA, which has nearly 60,000 employees, as air travel has increased in recent years. The TSA screened 904 million passengers in 2024, which was a record high and a 5% increase over 2023.
