    WASHINGTON, April 2 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump took the short trip from the White House to the U.S. Supreme Court with his signature priority of cracking down on immigration largely intact, given repeated interventions by the nation’s highest judicial body in his favor. By the time he left, his luck may have run out.

    With Trump looking on from the public section of the ​courtroom – a historic first for a sitting president – most of the nine justices seemed unwilling on Wednesday to let him proceed with what may be the most audacious piece of his restrictive immigration agenda. At issue during the ‌arguments was his executive order that would deny birthright citizenship to hundreds of thousands of babies born each year on U.S. soil.

    The members of the court, led for more than two decades by conservative Chief Justice John Roberts, signaled that the administration’s arguments backing Trump’s effort are legally invalid and inherently impractical.

    “I do not think that Chief Justice Roberts wants to go down in history as presiding over a court that ended birthright citizenship,” said Kevin Johnson, an immigration law expert at the University of California, Davis.

    The court, whose 6-3 conservative majority includes three justices appointed by Trump, heard the administration’s appeal ​of a lower court’s decision that blocked his directive.

    THE CITIZENSHIP CLAUSE

    The lower court found Trump’s order to be inconsistent with the U.S. Constitution’s 14th Amendment, which long has been interpreted as granting citizenship to virtually anyone born on U.S. ​soil, with some narrow exceptions including the children of foreign diplomats or members of an enemy occupying force.

    The 14th Amendment’s provision at issue, called the Citizenship Clause, states: “All persons born or naturalized ⁠in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.”

    Johnson said the court will likely be swayed by the plain language of the Citizenship Clause and the “long, unbroken history” of birthright citizenship.

    “The questions of the justices touched ​on some possible cracks in the rule but it remains intact,” Johnson said.

    Roberts labeled as “quirky” the administration’s argument that the 14th Amendment’s phrase “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” limits large categories of immigrants.

    The chief justice also appeared to dismiss a contention by U.S. Solicitor General ​D. John Sauer, defending Trump’s order, that the risk of “birth tourism” – by which foreigners travel to the United States to give birth and secure citizenship for their children – is a reason why the longstanding interpretation of the citizenship provision is wrong.

    “We’re in a new world now,” Sauer said. “Eight billion people are one plane ride away from having a child who’s a U.S. citizen.”

    “Well, it’s a new world,” Roberts replied. “It’s the same Constitution.”

    Not all the justices appeared to doubt Trump’s policy, however. Conservative Justice Samuel Alito, for instance, seemed receptive to the administration’s argument that birthright citizenship should be extended ​only to those with “lawful domicile” in the U.S., which lawyers for the administration define as “lawful, permanent residence within a nation, with intent to remain.”

    SWEEPING IMMIGRATION AGENDA

    Trump’s order had instructed U.S. agencies not to recognize the citizenship of children born in the United States ​if neither parent is an American citizen or legal permanent resident, also called a “green card” holder. Trump issued it on his first day back in office in January 2025, and it stood as a key part of his sweeping agenda to restrict both legal and illegal immigration.

    Both ‌it and many ⁠other immigration-related measures his administration has taken, in particular to pursue a policy of mass deportation, were quickly challenged in court.

    The trajectory of Wednesday’s arguments contrasted with a number of actions the Supreme Court has taken that have allowed Trump to implement many of these policies while the legal challenges play out.

    For instance, the court has let Trump end humanitarian protections for migrants, deport them to countries where they have no ties and carry out aggressive immigration raids that can target individuals based on their race or language. In certain cases, however, the justices have ruled that the administration must treat migrants fairly, as required under the Constitution’s promise of due process.

    Elora Mukherjee, director of the immigrant rights clinic at Columbia University’s law school in New York, said it is not surprising that the court would rule ​against Trump on birthright citizenship despite siding with him on other ​immigration issues.

    “Birthright citizenship is core to our identity as ⁠a nation,” Mukherjee said. “It is unlike any of the other contexts … which are not central to how all Americans live their lives and are not central to how we as a nation for generations have viewed ourselves.”

    George Mason University law professor Ilya Somin, an expert on constitutional law, said the court has been overly deferential to Trump on many immigration-related issues.

    A defeat for the Republican president ​on birthright citizenship would be significant in part because “the weight of argument and precedent is strongly on one side here, more so than in most of the other cases,” Somin ​said.

    Though the court has frequently sided with Trump ⁠over the past year on immigration matters and beyond, the arguments potentially foreshadow a major blow to another signature priority for the president. The justices in a 6-3 ruling in February struck down the sweeping global tariffs that Trump pursued under a law meant for use in national emergencies.

    ‘STUPID PEOPLE’

    That ruling provoked Trump to lash out at the court, calling the justices who ruled against him unpatriotic and disloyal and two of his appointees – Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett – an “embarrassment to their families.”

    The “Supreme Court’s not been acting very well,” Trump said on Wednesday, ⁠adding that certain justices ​he appointed want to show their independence. “Stupid people,” he called them.

    The fact that Trump was present in the elegant courtroom is unlikely to make a ​difference in the outcome of the case. A ruling is expected by the end of June.

    As he watched the proceedings, however, Trump might have spotted a marble frieze above the bench where the justices preside in their black robes.

    1️⃣ Artemis II launch

    Four astronauts blasted off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Wednesday on a monumental 10-day mission around the moon. The risky lunar venture will mark the first time astronauts return to the moon’s vicinity in more than 50 years. Artemis II will not land, but the test flight is designed to pave the way for a future crewed mission to the moon’s largely unexplored south pole. After a busy launch day, the astronauts are set to complete a critical engine burn today to help propel them toward lunar orbit. The crew includes NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover and Christina Koch, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen.

    2️⃣ Trump’s address

    In a primetime address on Wednesday, President Donald Trump said the war in Iran is “nearing completion,” while also warning he could bomb the country “back to the stone ages” if it does not agree to a peace deal within two to three weeks. He claimed success on his central objective — preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon — and urged Americans to be patient. He also downplayed the US’ reliance on the Strait of Hormuz and the global impact of its closure. Iran’s military rejected Trump’s assertion that it has been weakened by more than a month of strikes. “Following the powerful and unimaginable blows you have already received, expect even more crushing, more extensive and destructive actions from us,” it said in a statement.

    3️⃣ Oil prices

    Oil prices jumped and stocks slipped today after President Trump’s remarks dashed investors’ hopes for a swift end to the war. Brent crude rose 7.4% to more than $108 a barrel, while the US benchmark climbed 7% to about $107, as stock markets reversed earlier gains. In his Wednesday address, Trump said that the US — the world’s top oil producer— is insulated from supply shocks. But many Americans may find that statement hard to accept as they feel the pinch of gas prices soaring past $4 per gallon, which will likely increase the cost of everything from groceries to air travel.

    4️⃣ China’s nuclear arsenal

    The modernization of nuclear sites in China’s Sichuan province supports claims by the Trump administration that Beijing is pursuing its most significant nuclear weapons infrastructure expansion in decades, a CNN investigation has found. This comes as President Trump is set to visit Beijing next month, where he is expected to press Chinese leader Xi Jinping on curbing those ambitions. Experts are closely monitoring a facility called Site 906, which saw little development for decades — until now. CNN’s analysis of satellite imagery shows new buildings and infrastructure, including a massive dome that appears to be designed to keep highly radioactive materials such as uranium and plutonium trapped inside.

    Federal health officials are investigating a multistate outbreak of a dangerous E. coli strain linked to raw cheddar cheese, the FDA said. At least nine people have fallen ill and three have been hospitalized, prompting renewed warnings about the risks of raw milk products. Though raw dairy is growing in popularity due to its perceived benefits, health experts stress that pasteurization remains one of the most effective ways to prevent foodborne illnesses. It reduces risk through a process that heats milk to a specific temperature for a set period of time and then cools it rapidly.     Washington — The Senate early Thursday took the first step toward funding the bulk of the Department of Homeland Security after House GOP leaders reversed course and agreed on a plan to reopen most of the government while pursuing additional funding at a later date.

    Senate Majority Leader John Thune took to the Senate floor Thursday morning to move to send the House a measure that Senate Democrats and Republicans agreed to last week, which would fund all of DHS except for Immigration and Customs Enforcement and portions of Customs and Border Protection.

    Democrats have opposed funding DHS’ immigration enforcement operation since two deadly shootings by federal agents in Minneapolis earlier this year. And after negotiations stalled over reforms to ICE last week, the Senate moved forward with a plan to fund the vast majority of the department.

    But the plan was quickly thwarted by the House. Amid opposition from conservatives, Speaker Mike Johnson opted to ditch the Senate plan and instead put forward a temporary measure to fund all of DHS. The House left town for recess, just a day after the Senate, with no bicameral path to fund the department.

    Then on Wednesday, President Trump demanded that lawmakers fund ICE and Border Patrol through the reconciliation process, which allows Republicans to move forward with a bill without support from Senate Democrats. Hours later, Thune and Johnson said they would pursue funding for the immigration enforcement agencies for three years through the reconciliation process, while working to approve the other funding in the coming days.

    The strategy mirrored what the Senate’s plan to fund the department last week.

    The timing of the House’s next move remains unclear. Both the House and Senate are away on recess until the week of April 13. Thune moved the measure forward in a pro forma session Thursday, and the House is set to meet later in the morning for its own pro forma session. But House GOP leaders may wait to hold a vote until the full chamber returns.

    《新明日报》接获读者爆料,指大巴窑4巷组屋区的邻里按摩院暗藏春色,甚至在网上打广告,贴出穿着清凉的美女图,称提供“前列腺按摩”和“雄风按摩”等服务。

    读者说,按摩院的招牌写有“中医理疗”“补肾艾泥”和“淋巴排毒按摩”等字眼,现场按摩师穿着保守,但实则挂羊头卖狗肉,会提供性服务赚外快。

    “我觉得这样很不妥,让那些真的想找正统中医的顾客不知如何是好,这股歪风真的不可长。”

    记者上网查询按摩院的广告,可见“TCM Wellness(中医保健)”“Manhood Massage(雄风按摩)”等字样,和数张美女宣传照和视频。视频显示,按摩女身穿低胸装、紧身裙、黑丝袜,在按摩床上向镜头招手邀请,眼神撩人。

    记者日前走访时发现,一名身穿白色衬衫的30来岁女子坐在门口等待客人上门,门前玻璃被贴纸遮盖起来,店内设有两个隔间且灯光昏暗,走道上也可见电眼。

    记者上前询问价格时,按摩女邀请记者进店“了解详情”,并直称该处提供“抓龙筋”和“前列腺按摩”等服务,还说店内目前正做促销,可“按摩和保养一起做”。

    进入隔间后,按摩女一开始进行正规按摩,不久后就主动攀谈,介绍自己来自中国,在此工作没多久,说一个人在本地“觉得寂寞,如果有人可以带出去玩多好”。

    之后,按摩女问是否要“从头到脚好好舒压”,并说“保养”服务收费70元,甚至称“很多顾客说我服务好,都回来找我”。

    据观察,该座组屋底层短短一排店就设有中医馆、美容院和至少四家按摩院,其中三家可见按摩女坐在店外等生意,有的主动和路过男公众搭话,询问是否要按摩。

    附近商家受访时皆指出,该处早期因设有多家铁打馆,而俗称“铁打街”,但从四五年前开始,却陆续替换成可疑按摩院。

    有业者指出,曾遇顾客上门询问是否提供“特殊服务”,令她感到无奈。“我们都直接说没做这种。”

    消息人士星期三(4月1日)称,阿富汗和巴基斯坦在中国举行新一轮会谈,以结束自塔利班2021年在阿富汗重新掌权以来,两国之间发生的最致命冲突。

    据路透社报道,自巴基斯坦2月底发动空袭以来,冲突双方均伤亡惨重,但阿富汗方面伤亡更大,而中国正努力进行斡旋,尝试达成解决方案。

    在巴基斯坦和喀布尔的四位匿名消息人士称,两国外交部和国防部代表已前往中国乌鲁木齐,而且此次会谈会有中层官员参与。

    巴基斯坦外交部和阿富汗政府均未回应路透社的置评请求。

    消息人士说,此次会谈重点将是潜在停火安排,以及重新开放边境口岸以允许贸易和人员往来,而且中国方面提议展开这次会谈。
