Bus driver in deadly Virginia crash on I-95 charged with involuntary manslaughter

    May 30, 2026 / 6:32 PM EDT / CBS News

A bus driver involved in a Virginia highway crash early Friday morning that killed at least five people and injured nearly four dozen more has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, Virginia State Police said Saturday.

Jing S. Dong, 48, of Staten Island, New York, was charged with two counts of involuntary manslaughter, with additional charges pending, police said. Dong suffered injuries from the crash.

Police said the bus “failed to slow for traffic” and crashed into six vehicles at about 2:35 a.m. Eastern Time on Interstate 95 in Stafford County. The bus first struck a Chevrolet Suburban, which then hit an Acura SUV and additional vehicles. Four people in the Acura were killed, along with one person in the Suburban.

Five people were killed when a bus plowed into several vehicles on Interstate 95 in Virginia on Friday, May 29, 2026. Virginia State Police

The four people killed in the Acura, which caught fire after the collision, were identified as a 45-year-old man, a 44-year-old woman, a 13-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy, state police said. CBS News Boston learned that they were a family of four from Greenfield, Massachusetts, who were on their way to a wedding in South Carolina. They were identified to CBS News Boston as Dmitri Doncev, his wife Ecterina, their daughter Emily and son Mark.

The victim from the Suburban was identified as 25-year-old Priscilla Mafalda from Worcester, Massachusetts, state police said.

Forty-four other people were taken to area hospitals, police said, three with critical injuries. There were 34 people aboard the bus at the time of the collision.

An initial investigation showed traffic was slowing in the southbound lane as cars approached a work zone when the bus failed to slow for traffic, state police said.

    blob:https://www.cbsnews.com/b893de04-15a3-4264-a55f-0679868cbfc7

The National Transportation Safety Board is also investigating. In a news briefing Saturday, the NTSB said the bus was operated by E&P Travel of Kings Mountain, North Carolina, and was transporting passengers from New York to North Carolina.

“It seems fairly clear that if there was any braking, there wasn’t much, because of the speed and the severity of the collision,” NTSB member Tom Chapman told reporters, adding that it was still “too early yet to know exactly what was happening on board the vehicle.”

The NTSB’s preliminary report into the crash will come in the next 30 days. Both state police and the NTSB have said they are looking into the bus driver’s actions before the crash.

“One of the things that we do, as a matter of course, is we do a 72-hour look back to see what the driver’s activities were during the days leading up to the crash,” Chapman said. “So we’re looking for, you know, sleep issues, distraction issues, potential drug and alcohol issues.”

Trump administration appears to downplay impact of green card policy changes

Following intense backlash, the Trump administration is seeking to downplay the impact and scope of a recent immigration policy change that triggered concerns that hundreds of thousands of green card applicants would be forced to leave the U.S. to continue their cases.

Last week, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services unveiled guidance that officials said would eliminate the option for many immigrants to apply for a green card, or permanent U.S. residency, without having to leave the country to complete the process at an American consulate in their home countries.

The memo appeared to dramatically limit a process known as “adjustment of status,” which permits immigrants being sponsored for a green card by American employers or relatives to stay in the U.S. while they wait for one. At the time, a USCIS spokesperson said someone “who is in the U.S. temporarily and wants a Green Card must return to their home country to apply, except in extraordinary circumstances.”

The announcement alarmed immigrants, business groups and immigration lawyers, who feared the move would force hundreds of thousands to leave the U.S. and strand some of them overseas due to broad travel and entry restrictions the Trump administration has imposed on dozens of countries.

But over the weekend, the Department of Homeland issued a statement that portrayed the green card guidance in far less sweeping ways, arguing the memo issued last week restated “longstanding law and policy.”

DHS said the “policy will not prevent any alien from obtaining a green card who legitimately and properly qualify.” The department said the guidance “will result in some aliens who do not merit the discretionary benefit ultimately applying with the Department of State overseas rather than USCIS in the United States.”

“This policy will have no noticeable impact on highly qualified applicants and skilled professionals who have followed the law,” DHS said in its statement to CBS News on Saturday. “These aliens benefit the national interest and provide economic benefits to the United States and will continue to merit the favorable exercise of discretion.”

Lynden Melmed, who served as the top lawyer at USCIS under the George W. Bush administration, said DHS’ new statement seeks to narrow the scope of the green card guidance, making it less categorical. He said USCIS officers have long used discretion and analyzed different negative and positive factors to determine someone’s eligibility to apply for a green card within the U.S.

But Melmed said the guidance will still likely prove to be “burdensome” for immigrant applicants and their lawyers, prompting them to submit more evidence to show why they should not be required to leave the U.S. and apply for a green card abroad. He said the seemingly inconsistent messaging from the administration was also confusing for USCIS officers.

“The underlying policy will still slow legal immigration but at least they are toning down the rhetoric,” Melmed said.

Graham Platner’s wife told campaign about sexually explicit texts he sent to other women

The wife of Democratic Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner told his campaign in 2025 about sexual messages he had sent to other women.

Amy Gertner, whom Platner has been married to since November 2023, told the campaign about the texts during an internal vetting process last year at the beginning of his campaign. Gertner’s disclosure of the texts were first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

In a statement from Gertner provided by the Platner campaign, she wrote that they have gone through counseling and that their marriage today “is stronger than ever before.”

“I know the man I married and the husband he has been to me on the best and the worst days of my life. That hasn’t changed, and it won’t,” she added.

She also notes how she shared “deeply personal details about my marriage” to an unnamed campaign staffer.

“I trusted this person with the most private chapter of our lives — the early days of our marriage before any campaign was on our mind — and I am deeply hurt by her betrayal and the invasion of our privacy,” Gertner wrote.

Platner is the presumptive Democratic nominee who will likely be taking on Republican Sen. Susan Collins in the November midterm elections after his main Democratic primary opponent, Maine Gov. Janet Mills, dropped out of the race in April. He has faced controversy over several problematic internet comments he made, as well as for a tattoo he got during his time in the Marines that is widely recognized as a Nazi symbol. He later covered the tattoo up.

The winner of the Maine Senate race is expected to play a key role in which party controls the chamber after the midterms. Platner has been endorsed by, and campaigned with, progressive Sens. Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. He has ran a more populist campaign centered around his working-class background.

In an April interview with CBS News’ Major Garrett on “The Takeout,” Platner said previous controversial opinions he held were due to post-traumatic stress disorder, as well as to his time serving in a military that he described as “a hyper-masculine, hyper-violent place.”

“We have a crude sense of humor in the infantry. We certainly have a, I would say, narrow view of a lot of topics, and that colored my opinions and my beliefs,” Platner said. “Over the years in between, I met a lot more people, had a lot more experiences, learned a lot more about the world. And my opinions have changed with it.”

Trump to kick off Great American State Fair after several musicians cancel

    May 30, 2026 / 5:25 PM EDT / CBS News

    By Kierra Frazier

Kierra Frazier is a news editor for CBS News & Stations.

President Trump will kick off the Great American State Fair in Washington, D.C, after several of the musical guests this week pulled out of the event, which has been described as a birthday bash to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary.

Freedom 250, the organization behind the event, said Saturday that Mr. Trump will kick off the event on June 24 in an opening ceremony.

“As the visionary behind the Great American State Fair, we are excited to announce that President Trump will personally kick off this historic celebration on Wednesday, June 24 in an opening ceremony celebrating America’s 250th birthday,” said Danielle Alvarez, a spokesperson for Freedom 250.

Mr. Trump said in a social media post earlier Saturday indicated he would look into holding an “America is Back” rally at the state fair where he would “give a major speech, rallying the Country forward.”

“I understand Artists are getting ‘the yips’ having to do with their performance … so I am thinking about bringing the Number One Attraction anywhere in the World, the man who gets much larger audiences than Elvis in his prime, and he does so without a guitar, the man who loves our Country more than anyone else, and the man who some say is the Greatest President in History (THE GOAT!), DONALD J. TRUMP, to take the place of these highly paid, Third Rate ‘Artists,’ and give a major speech, rallying the Country forward like I have done ever since being President!” Mr. Trump wrote in the post.

Freedom 250 announced a slate of artists last week to perform at a series of concerts on the National Mall from June 24 to July 10. But shortly after its announcement, many of the artists canceled, citing concerns that the event would be too political in nature.

Morris Day and the Time, Young MC, the Commodores, Martina McBride and Bret Michaels have all announced they would not be participating.

Fab Morvan of Milli Vanilli, Vanilla Ice, C+C Music Factory rapper Freedom Williams and Flo Rida are still scheduled to perform.

Freedom 250 has said the initiative is nonpartisan and should be treated as such.

NEWARK, N.J. — The continued unrest outside Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, New Jersey, took on a distinctly ideological tone during ICE demonstrations Saturday, as far-left communist-socialist activists and a far-right group clashed, transforming a protest over the center’s conditions into a broader political spectacle.

The standoff began more than a week ago, when illegal immigrant detainees penned an open letter alleging physical and psychological torture, claiming they were being denied medical care and adequate food.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) quickly denied the allegations, releasing facility menus to prove detainees are provided three daily meals with options like chicken fajitas and Salisbury steak.

NEW JERSEY AGITATORS BITE, KICK AND PUNCH ICE AGENTS AS DELANEY HALL CLASHES CONTINUE; 9 MORE ARRESTED: DHS

After violent skirmishes earlier in the week, where federal agents were assaulted by agitators, Democrat Gov. Mikie Sherrill ordered the New Jersey State Police to take over security, claiming the move was necessary to protect the demonstrators from an “ICE surge.”

By Saturday morning, the immigrant detention center had been transformed into a fortified zone surrounded by large orange plastic barricades and metal fencing.

State officials admitted the chaos is being driven by outside instigators rather than local residents, with state Attorney General Jennifer Davenport confirming five of the six people arrested by state police this week were not from New Jersey.

A crowd of roughly 200 anti-ICE demonstrators, heavily intertwined with far-left and socialist organizations, dominated the scene Saturday, chanting, “Stop ICE Gestapo! Communist revolution!” while distributing radical literature reading “LONG LIVE COMMUNISM!” and “NO PAPERS, NO BORDERS, NO BOSSES.”

ICE supporters, including members of the far-right Proud Boys, also made an appearance at the protest Saturday carrying pro-ICE flags, food and cases of water for law enforcement.

Their arrival sent a shockwave through the heavily outnumbering anti-ICE crowd, with far-left agitators immediately rushing toward the barriers, screaming profanities and shifting their chants to “Proud Boys go home.”

During a news conference Saturday afternoon, Sherrill claimed ICE engagement “creates an incredibly dangerous situation” adding she refuses to “back down in fighting the Trump administration and the threats they’ve made.”

Sherrill acknowledged that “national extremist groups” have infiltrated the protests to create chaos, warning out-of-state actors that they are endangering the public and not helping the detainees.

“You’re not helping detainee families, and you’re certainly not keeping new Jersey safe today,” the governor said. “Going forward, I urge those protesting outside of Delaney Hall to bring the temperature down so we can focus on the detainees and their families. Comply with the lawful orders from local and state law enforcement and let advocates, faith leaders and members of this community continue their work here in America.”

Rep. Seth Moulton to take on Sen. Ed Markey in Massachusetts Democratic Senate primary

    May 30, 2026 / 5:51 PM EDT / AP

U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton, a moderate Massachusetts Democrat, secured enough delegate support Saturday to appear on the state’s primary ballot as he challenges incumbent Sen. Ed Markey in this year’s Senate race.

Yet even though Moulton cleared a key hurdle to continue his Senate bid, it was Markey who won the party’s endorsement after winning more than 50% of the delegation’s support.

“You have a choice, you have to decide what the future looks like and what you’re going to demand,” Markey said Saturday in front of more than 4,000 delegates.

The Massachusetts primary is Sept. 1.

Markey won nearly 73% of the delegates’ support, while Moulton won nearly 27% of the vote. Massachusetts Democratic Party rules require statewide candidates to get at least 15% of delegate support to appear on primary ballots.

In heavily Democratic Massachusetts, the Senate primary contest is one of the most closely watched in the country as Moulton, 47, has centered his campaign on changing the status quo and demanding a generational shift in leadership.

If reelected, Markey would be 80 before his third six-year term would begin. While Markey has touted his stamina and embrace of progressive policies, questions about age have continued to swirl around Democratic candidates as they fight to take back control of Congress.

In his nomination speech, Moulton argued that the Democratic Party needed more than “incremental change” and needed to start anew.

“It’s time for the generation that grew up with the internet, and will have to live for decades with AI, to lead our way through it,” Moulton said.

Moulton only addressed his opponent briefly during his nomination speech, giving a passing nod on not waiting another six years for generational change and later calling on Markey to participate in multiple debates before the September primary. Currently, the two candidates have agreed to participate in one debate later this summer.

Markey, instead, took a more critical approach by attacking Moulton’s previous comments about transgender kids and accepting corporate PAC money.

“Massachusetts deserves better than a senator who scapegoats trans kids,” Markey said to loud cheers.

In 2024, Moulton caught flak from some members of his party for saying he didn’t want his daughters playing in sports against transgender girls. Critics said Moulton echoed President Trump’s talking points against allowing transgender athletes in girls’ and women’s sports.

Moulton has since said his intent with that statement “was to point out that, as a party, we need to be willing to have difficult conversations.”

Moulton, who enlisted in the Marines after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and served four tours of duty in Iraq, was first elected to the House in 2014. He briefly launched a 2020 presidential campaign, but he dropped that bid after a few months.

Markey served as a Massachusetts congressman for nearly 40 years before winning the Senate seat in 2013. He fended off a challenge in 2020 from Rep. Joe Kennedy III in the Senate primary by turning to his progressive allies to overcome a challenge from a younger rival from America’s most famous political family.
