Defense attorneys build mapping tool to track Justice Dept. “weaponization”

    February 22, 2026 / 8:00 PM EST / CBS News

In response to a wave of complaints that the Trump administration is weaponizing the Justice Department against political critics, a national group of defense attorneys has launched a tool to track and map where that “weapon” has been deployed.

The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers has posted an interactive tracking tool to enable attorneys and citizens to check for some of the controversial, unusual or unsuccessful attempted prosecutions by the Justice Department in the first year of Trump’s second term.

The online tool, which is being supported pro bono by a group of attorneys and legal professionals, includes some of the notable misfires by the Trump Justice Department.

The mapping feature shows the rising number of cases in which grand juries rejected the Justice Department’s attempts to obtain indictments against Trump administration critics, Democratic public officials or protesters.

The cases featured include the so-called “sandwich thrower” case, in which a Washington, D.C., grand jury rejected an attempt by the Trump administration to criminally indict a man who tossed a sandwich at a federal agent in 2025.

The tool is designed to be used and shared by defense attorneys to monitor for controversial cases nationwide and asks them to contribute cases or learn from any examples.

“What has been happening is so unusual and different that I felt that it needed to be brought to the public’s attention,” said Steven Salky, a D.C. attorney who’s helping to oversee the project.

“I thought that this was a good way to help defense lawyers — particularly federal defenders — defend cases,” Salky said.

“The Bill of Rights wasn’t written to be a polite suggestion; it was written to be a shield against tyranny,” said NACDL President Andrew Birrell of Minneapolis, in announcing the online tool.

“What we are seeing in courtrooms from the Midwest to the coasts is a fundamental, righteous rejection of the idea that criminal law can be used as a tool for political retribution,” Birell said. “Jurors are seeing through these ‘novel’ and transparently thin theories. They are reminding this government that the people — not the prosecutors — hold the ultimate power in our justice system.”

The tracker also contains cases in which the Justice Department was accused of “weaponized forum shopping.” In attempting to secure an indictment in Virginia against New York Attorney General Letitia James, for example, the department convened grand juries in three different cities: Alexandria, Richmond and Norfolk. The tracker illustrates references superimposed on Virginia inside a searchable map of the nation.

NACDL said in rolling out the tool that its web database provides a “state-by-state visual breakdown of tracked cases and emerging enforcement trends.” The group is trying to help attorneys filter through cases nationwide, enabling them to search by alleged conduct, court, outcome and other case features. NACDL says its tool will provide access to key filings and judicial rulings “to support effective advocacy against novel, expansive, and aggressive theories.”

A Justice Department spokesperson, in response to a request for comment about the new tracking tool, said, “We respect the judicial process and jurors’ role as impartial arbiters of evidence — regardless of what the results may be — and will not be deterred or distracted from keeping the American people safe.”

The number of failed grand jury indictments tallied in the new database, including a controversial attempt by the Trump administration to prosecute six Democratic members of Congress this month, is unique in the history of the federal criminal justice system.

A search of the database, which is continuing to be expanded, by Sunday contained 11 prosecutions in which the Justice Department failed to secure an indictment. Several of the cases were dismissed, the department is pursuing charges in the D.C. Superior Court in a couple of cases and in one — the case against James — the government has filed a notice of appeal.

Former Justice Department prosecutor Brendan Ballou, who left the agency in 2025, told CBS News, “The fact that this tracker needs to exist speaks to the imploding credibility of the Department of Justice, where no bills were once extraordinarily rare. This is important work, and the information will help political opponents targeted in the future argue that they are being vindictively prosecuted.”

Mark Zaid, a national security attorney who has represented whistleblowers and briefly had his security clearance stripped in retribution by the Trump administration, said the new web tool reveals the Justice Department’s broad effort at retribution.

“The rebellion by grand juries across the country against the Trump administration’s political weaponization of the Department of Justice is unequivocal proof that large swaths of America prefer the rule of law over petty retaliatory agendas,” Zaid said.

Greenland rejects Trump’s hospital ship proposal, citing existing free healthcare system

Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen contrasts territory’s free healthcare with expensive American system

Greenland’s prime minister publicly rebuked President Donald Trump on Sunday, rejecting his proposal to send a U.S. hospital ship to the Arctic territory and urging him to stop making “random” social media posts about its future.

Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen issued the response in a pointed Facebook post following Trump’s announcement.

“We say no thank you from here,” Nielsen wrote. “President Trump’s idea of sending an American hospital ship here to Greenland has been noted. But we have a public healthcare system where treatment is free for citizens.”

The prime minister also contrasted Greenland’s system with that of the U.S., writing that, in America, “it costs money to go to the doctor.”

TRUMP TELLS DAVOS US ALONE CAN SECURE GREENLAND, INSISTS HE WON’T ‘USE FORCE’

Nielsen said Greenland is “always” open to dialogue with the U.S. but urged Trump to engage directly.

“Talk to us instead of just making more or less random outbursts on social media,” he wrote. “Dialogue and cooperation require respect for decisions about our country being made here at home.”

On Saturday, Trump announced on Truth Social that his administration was working with Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry to send a hospital ship to Greenland to care for people who are sick and “not being taken care of there.”

RUSSIA, CHINA SQUEEZE US ARCTIC DEFENSE ZONE AS TRUMP EYES GREENLAND

Landry was designated special envoy to Greenland in December and has held formal discussions outlining Trump’s plans to strengthen Arctic security amid threats from Russia and China.

In late January, Landry spoke with NATO leaders and expressed support for a “framework of a future deal” to expand U.S. influence in the region.

Trump’s offer came after Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command evacuated a crew member from a U.S. submarine seven nautical miles outside Greenland’s capital, Nuuk.

The crew member was transferred by a Danish Defense Seahawk helicopter to a hospital in Nuuk and handed over to Greenlandic health authorities, the Joint Arctic Command said.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has tightened control over Hezbollah in the Middle East amid looming prospects of potential U.S. strikes, according to reports.

According to the Jerusalem Post, the tactical shift comes as Hezbollah and Iran prepare for military confrontation in the region, with analysts warning that if Washington specifically strikes the regime, Hezbollah is ready to be “activated.”

“If the [regime in Tehran] feels threatened, the likelihood of unleashing Hezbollah against Israel and U.S. regional assets increases substantially,” Ross Harrison, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute, told Fox News Digital.

“Hezbollah would not be activated right away, unless the attack immediately targets the leadership of the Islamic Republic. But as part of a graduated response, Hezbollah will likely be seen as an asset,” he said.

“If it faces an existential risk, then Iran may throw caution to the wind and try to deploy Hezbollah to the maximum,” Harrison explained.

“As part of a graduated response, Hezbollah will likely be seen as an asset,” Ross Harrison, a senior fellow at the Middle East Institute, told Fox News Digital.(Fadel Itani/NurPhoto via Getty Images)

President Donald Trump previously gave Iran a deadline of 10 to 15 days to respond to a deal, raising questions about what steps Washington could take if Tehran fails to comply.

A new round of talks is now scheduled for Thursday in Geneva and expected to focus on Iran’s nuclear program, including uranium enrichment levels and sanctions relief.

“The decision-making circle in the [White House] is very small regarding Iran, with the president keeping a close hand on it all,” Harrison explained.

He added that any decision to directly target the Iranian regime would likely rest within Trump’s inner circle of advisers.

“Normally there is input from the [National Security Council] and the wider intelligence community,” Harrison said. “Since the decision-making process in the White House is opaque, it is hard to know how much of this is getting through.”

“If the U.S. is engaging with [the Saudis and Emiratis], they are getting warnings about the possibility of this war spreading to the broader region, which would be deleterious to the U.S. and its allies,” he added.

Harrirson also warned that there was “potential for attacks to spread across the region, to Israel through direct Iranian ballistic attacks and via Hezbollah, and to the Gulf Arab states through Iran directly and possibly via the Houthis from Yemen.”

Regional media reports also suggest Iran’s ties with Hezbollah are strengthening. Sources told Al Arabiya and Al Hadath that IRGC officers have been rebuilding Hezbollah’s military infrastructure and managing strategic war plans.

The coordination follows changes within Hezbollah’s leadership, Harrison explained.

“Since the killing by Israel of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah last year, ties and operational coordination have to some degree been reestablished,” he said.

“The IRGC has supported Hezbollah in Lebanon for decades,” he said, adding that efforts to reestablish ties appear to be occurring “particularly in light of the [destruction of Iran’s nuclear sites] last June.”

“Since the killing by Israel of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah last year, ties and operational coordination have to some degree been reestablished,” Harrison said.(Marwan Naamani/picture-alliance/dpa/AP Images)

“Iran is trying to resurrect lost assets, such as its missile program and its connections to Hezbollah,” Harrison said.

“Hezbollah has been seen for decades by Iran as a deterrence asset against an Israeli or American attack. Since Hezbollah has its own interests, connected to but separate from Iran, whether its leadership will go all the way for Tehran is unknown,” he concluded.

NASA to start slow-moving process returning moon rocket to hangar this week

    February 22, 2026 / 3:31 PM EST / CBS/AP

Grounded until at least April,NASA’s giant moon rocketis headed back to the hangar this week for more repairsbefore astronauts climb aboard.

The space agency said Sunday it’s targeting Tuesday for the slow, four-mile trek across Kennedy Space Center, weather permitting.

“The quick work to begin preparations for rolling the rocket and spacecraft back to the VAB (Vehicle Assembly Building) potentially preserves the April launch window, pending the outcome of data findings, repair efforts, and how the schedule comes to fruition in the coming days and weeks,” the space agency said in a statement on Sunday.

NASA had barely finished arepeat fueling test Thursday, to ensure dangerous hydrogen fuel leaks were plugged, when another problem cropped up.

This time, the rocket’s helium system malfunctioned, further delaying astronauts’ first trip to the moon in more than half a century.

Engineers had just tamed the hydrogen leaks and settled on a March 6 launch date — already a month late — when the helium issue arose. The helium flow to the rocket’s upper stage was disrupted; helium is needed to purge the engines and pressurize the fuel tanks.

“Returning to the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy is required to determine the cause of the issue and fix it,” NASA said in a statement.

NASA said the quick rollback preps preserve an April launch attempt, but stressed that will depend on how the repairs go. The space agency has only a handful of days any given month to launch the crew of four around the moon and back.

The Artemis II mission aims to sendfour astronauts— Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen — on a flight around the far side of the moon and back to thoroughly test the agency’s Orion deep space capsule to help clear the way for a lunar landing mission, Artemis III, in 2028.

The crew members were released from quarantine on Saturday and remain in Houston, NASA said in a statement. They will become the first people to fly to the moon since NASA’s Apollo program that sent 24 astronauts there from 1968 through 1972.

Winter Olympics closing ceremony celebrates athletes, Italian art at ancient Roman amphitheater

    February 22, 2026 / 4:57 PM EST / CBS/AP

The Milan Cortina Olympics ended Sunday with a closing ceremony inside Verona Arena, an ancient Roman amphitheater that sits roughly mid-distance between the far-flung mountain, valley and city venues that made these the most spread-out Winter Games in Olympic history.

The 2½-hour ceremony celebrated Italian music and dance, both classic and contemporary, headlining internationally acclaimed ballet dancer Roberto Bolle along with popular Italian singer Achille Lauro and DJ Gabry Ponte.

Some 1,500 Olympians, a bit over half those who competed in the Games, paraded into the monument built in the first century for gladiator fights and exotic animal hunts.

They entered en masse behind a pair of flag bearers from each of the 92 participating nations, including biathlete Lisa Vittozzi and speedskater Davide Ghiotto for host Italy, and hockey player Hilary Knight and ice dancer Evan Bates for the United States – all gold medal winners.

The United States fielded its biggest Winter Olympics team ever for the 2026 Milano Cortina Games, with 232 athletes competing, and broke the record for Team USA’s most gold medals at a single Winter Games. The U.S. was one of only two nations to compete in all 16 sport disciplines, along with host Italy, according to the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee.

“These Games showcased the very best of Team USA: resilience, unity and a relentless pursuit of excellence,” said USOPC CEO Sarah Hirshland said in a statement. “Our athletes delivered a truly historic performance, earning a Team USA-record 12 gold medals and creating moments that will inspire the next generation … That momentum now carries us forward as we look ahead to Los Angeles in 2028, where we’re excited to build on this legacy and welcome the world to our home soil.”

Some 12,000 spectators joined the athletes and officials for the closing ceremony. It was much more intimate than the opening ceremony, which starred Mariah Carey and Andrea Bocelli inside Milan’s San Siro soccer stadium, attended by more than 60,000 people.

The ceremony celebrated Italian lyric opera, which has been recognized by the U.N. cultural agency UNESCO as a global treasure, but also pay tribute to contemporary Italian classics. Both opera and dance are at home in the stone amphitheater, which each summer hosts a popular opera festival with lavish productions and the gala dance performance titled Roberto Bolle and Friends.

Part of the ceremony included a somber remembrance of athletes who have died, although the commemoration, filled with butterfly imagery, did not identify specific athletes.

Earlier in the 2026 Winter Games, the International Olympic Committee kept Ukrainian skeleton athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych out of competition after he refused a last-minute plea from the IOC for him not to use a helmet that honors athletes killed in Russia’s war on his country. The helmet goes against a rule about making political statements on the Olympic field of play, according to the IOC.

“No one, especially me, is disagreeing with the messaging, it’s a powerful message, it’s a message of remembrance, of memory,” IOC President Kirsty Coventry told reporters at the time, according to the Reuters news agency. The challenge was to find a solution for the field of play.”

This was the first Games for Coventry, a two-time Olympic champion in swimming, who oversaw the ceremony alongside Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

One of the key moments of the ceremony is when the Olympic flag is handed over to the next Winter Games host nation, France, and its flag is raised next to Italy’s and Greece’s.

The Milan Cortina Games spanned an area of 8,500 square mile, from ice sports in Milan to biathlon in Anterselva on the Austrian border, snowboarding and men’s downhill in Valtellina on the Swiss border, cross-country skiing in the Val di Fiemme north of Verona and women’s downhill, curling and sliding sports in co-host Cortina d’Ampezzo.

It’s a model that will remain for future Games, to avoid the expense of building new facilities. The 2030 Winter Games in the French Alps will stage events in the Alps and Nice, on the Mediterranean Sea, while speedskating will be held abroad in a venue to be decided.

The closing ceremony concluded with the Olympic flames being extinguished at the unprecedented two cauldrons in Milan and Cortina, to be viewed via video link. A light show will substitute fireworks, which are not allowed in Verona, to protect animals from being disturbed.

A total of 116 medal events have been held in eight Olympic sports across 16 disciplines, including the debut of ski mountaineering this year, over the course of 17 days of competition.

The Milan Cortina Paralympics’ opening ceremony will also take place in the Verona Arena, on March 6, and the Games will run until March 15.
