    American drivers have paid an additional $8.4 billion in fuel costs since the Iran war started, according to a new estimate from the Joint Economic Committee’s Democratic minority.

    The lawmakers’ calculation is based on daily average gasoline prices as tracked by AAA between Feb. 28, when the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran, through March 31. The figure also draws on information from auto researcher Edmunds on the tank sizes of top-selling gas vehicles in the U.S. and on federal fuel consumption data from the Federal Highway Administration and Energy Information Administration.

    The average cost of gas across the U.S. rose to $4.06 a gallon on Wednesday after topping $4 the previous day for the first time since 2022, according to AAA data.

    Drivers of Toyota RAV4s now spend $58.26 to fill up their tanks, an increase of $15.02, or 35%, from before the war, the analysis finds. A Ford F-150 pickup truck costs $144.65 to fill up, an increase of $37.29, while Toyota Camry sedan owners are spending $52.23 to fill their tank, or $13.46 more than before the conflict started last month.

    Despite higher gas prices in March, credit card data shows consumers are continuing to spend, suggesting households so far are weathering the financial impact of higher fuel costs, according to Navy Federal Credit Union.

    But the Conference Board Consumer Confidence Index, released on March 31, shows fewer Americans are planning big-ticket purchases over the next six months, a sign some households could be feeling the effects of higher fuel costs.

    “The strain is starting to show, especially as gas hits $4 a gallon nationwide,” said Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, in an email. “It’s almost certainly going to be a muted second quarter for spending and GDP growth as the worst of the inflation shock hits consumers.”

    The White House didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

    The Trump administration has said that the recent spike in gas prices is temporary and that fuel costs will subside when the Iran war ends.

    “When Operation Epic Fury is complete, gas prices will plummet back to the multi-year lows American drivers enjoyed before these short-term disruptions,” White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told CBS News in an email on Tuesday.

    A recent CBS News poll of 3,335 adults found that rising gas prices are heightening concerns about the U.S. economy.

    About one-third of Americans are making changes to their spending or savings habits to cope with higher gas prices, while another 35% said they plan to adjust their budgets if fuel costs remain elevated, according to a new LendingTree study.

    Texas and California residents have faced the sharpest increase in gas costs due to their large populations and number of drivers. Texans have paid an additional $1.04 billion in fuel costs since Feb. 28, while Californians have paid an extra $970 million at the pump over the same time, the JEC Minority report estimates.

    Other states with significant increases include Florida, with $684 million in extra gas costs, and North Carolina, with an extra $361 million in spending, the analysis said.

    Members of the Virginia NAACP gathered Wednesday morning to denounce mailers they said were misleading voters about the upcoming redistricting referendum in their state.

    “Today, we confront a legacy that echoes the Jim Crow era – disinformation designed to sow confusion and suppress the voices of Black voters. We are here to affirm that we will not be deterred, we will fight back,” said Rev. Cozy Bailey, president of the NAACP Virginia State Conference. “I urge you all to remain vigilant, to educate yourselves about the purpose of this referendum, and to advocate fiercely for the rights of Black voters in Virginia.”

    The mailers feature images of former President Barack Obama and quotes in which he criticizes gerrymandering, including one statement from six years ago, when he wrote on X: “For too long, gerrymandering has contributed to stalled progress and warped our representative government.” Large block letters on the mailers urge Virginians to “Vote No.”

    But that obscures that Obama is among those supporting Democrats’ push to redraw congressional lines in Virginia, part of a cascading fight over partisan redistricting begun by Texas Republicans last summer at President Donald Trump’s behest.

    The argument over Obama reflects the conundrum that is worrying some Democratic allies ahead of an April 21 referendum. Having promoted nonpartisan redistricting in the past, Obama, Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger and other top Democrats now have to motivate voters to turn out for a special election to impose a gerrymander that could leave Republicans with just one out of 11 US House seats in the state.

    Any Democratic gains in Virginia could be crucial for the midterms, with Republicans pursuing new redistricting plans in red states and a pivotal Supreme Court decision on the Voting Rights Act that could come this summer and further upend the 2026 landscape.

    Already, Republicans in Texas and Democrats in California have enacted redistricting plans aimed at adding five seats to their respective columns – virtually offsetting each other.

    Last week as the Obama mailers began to circulate, the National Democratic Redistricting Committee issued a statement condemning the “dishonest mailer that features an unauthorized photo of President Barack Obama and lies about his position on the Virginia referendum.”

    Reached for comment, former state delegate A.C. Cordoza, the chairman of Democracy and Justice PAC, defended the mailers. “No one can refute the accuracy of the quotes we’re presenting. Barack Obama, Abigail Spanberger, and others have already spoken against this kind of gerrymandering – I’m simply reminding voters where they stood,” Cordoza said.

    Democrats still have financial and political advantages

    Texas’ GOP-controlled state legislature passed a measure at Trump’s urging. California’s response was put to the state’s predominantly liberal electorate last November.

    Virginia went against Trump in each of the last three presidential elections but has a more moderate bent.

    “Virginia’s not California,” Rep. Jennifer McClellan, a Virginia Democrat, told Punchbowl News. “It’s apples to oranges.”

    Democrats are pouring resources into the effort to pass the referendum and are still hopeful for several reasons.

    In the early vote so far, the ratio of Democratic to Republican primary participants is running roughly on par with the ratio at this point in last year’s election, which saw Democrats sweep the top three statewide offices and expand their majority in the Virginia House of Delegates. While voters in Virginia do not register with a political party, the primary participation history of voters can indicate which party they generally align with.

    National Democrats, through their nonprofit House Majority Forward, have contributed roughly half of the nearly $40 million in funding for the largest group on the “Yes” side, Virginians for Fair Elections. Another leading liberal advocacy organization, The Fairness Project, contributed an additional $10 million.

    That’s helped Democrats outspend Republicans on advertising for the vote by about $32.5 million to $2.5 million, according to data from the ad tracking firm AdImpact.

    Obama, as he did for California’s referendum, appears in a TV ad for redistricting proponents that has received more than $2 million in airtime. “Republicans want to steal enough seats in Congress to rig the next election and wield unchecked power for two more years, but you can stop them by voting yes,” Obama says in the spot.

    With three weeks to go, funds are rushing in on the Republican side to help close the messaging gap. House Speaker Mike Johnson is set to attend a fundraiser in Virginia this month for the opposition effort. And the leading group opposing redistricting, Virginians For Fair Maps, received $5 million on the last day of March from an affiliated, anonymous nonprofit, which more than doubled its fundraising total to about $8 million.

    Jason Miyares, former Virginia attorney general and one of the leaders of Virginians For Fair Maps, described the spending mismatch as “a little bit of David versus Goliath,” and argued redistricting proponents were “flooded with outside money from Illinois and California and New York.”

    “But, as I remind people, David won,” Miyares added.

    The new Democratic Gov. Abigail Spanberger has not personalized her state’s redistricting fight as Gov. Gavin Newsom did in California, though she appeared in a recent ad for the referendum.

    “Do I wish that we didn’t have to even consider this? Sure,” she told the Washington Post. “But in the world that we are living in … I do think that Virginia, because we have the ability to be responsive, I think that it’s important that we give that option to voters.”

    Groups supporting the new map also say they are counting on a surge of Democratic voters in the days ahead as counties open additional in-person voting locations. Starting Saturday in northern Virginia’s populous and heavily Democratic Fairfax County, for instance, early voting sites will grow from three sites to 16.

    “Virginia is not California, right? But it’s still a Democratic state, though. And I also think Democrats probably just generically have kind of … an enthusiasm advantage,” said Kyle Kondik, an elections analyst at the University of Virginia.

    President Donald Trump addressed the nation Wednesday night, saying the United States’ “core strategic objectives” in Iran are “nearing completion” just a month after Operation Epic Fury began and warned that the U.S. will hit Tehran “extremely hard” over the next several weeks.

    “Tonight, I’m pleased to say that these core strategic objectives are nearing completion,” the president said, touting the United States military and their “extraordinary” efforts.

    Trump says Operation Epic Fury is ‘nearing completion’

    President Trump told Americans Wednesday night that after 32 days of Operation Epic Fury, Iran is “essentially really no longer a threat.”

    The president, upon the announcement of Operation Epic Fury, detailed the United States’ objectives. Trump said, “We are systematically dismantling the regime’s ability to threaten America or project power outside of their borders.”

    “That means eliminating Iran’s navy, which is now absolutely destroyed, hurting their air force and their missile program at levels never seen before, and annihilating their defense industrial base,” the president said Wednesday night.

    “We’ve done all of it,” he continued. “Their navy is gone. Their air force is gone. Their missiles are just about used up or beaten. Taken together, these actions will cripple Iran’s military, crush their ability to support terrorist proxies and deny them the ability to build a nuclear bomb.”

    “Our armed forces have been extraordinary,” the president said. “There’s never been anything like it militarily. Everyone is talking about it.”

    “And tonight, I’m pleased to say that these core strategic objectives are nearing completion,” he said.

    Meanwhile, the president thanked U.S. allies in the Middle East — “Israel, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Kuwait and Bahrain.”

    “They’ve been great, and we will not let them get hurt or fail in any way, shape or form,” he said.

    “I’ve made clear from the beginning of Operation Epic Fury that we will continue until our objectives are fully achieved, thanks to the progress we’ve made,” he said. “I can say tonight that we are on track to complete all of America’s military objectives shortly. Very shortly.”

    The president warned that the U.S. is “going to hit them extremely hard over the next two to three weeks.”

    “We’re going to bring them back to the Stone Ages where they belong,” he said. “In the meantime, discussions are ongoing. Regime change was not our goal. We never said regime change, but regime change has occurred because of all of their original leaders’ deaths. They’re all dead. The new group is less radical and much more reasonable.”

    Trump says rising gas prices in the US are ‘short term’

    Since Operation Epic Fury began, gas prices in the United States have increased. The president acknowledged that development, and expressed confidence that those increases are “short term.”

    The average price of a gallon of gas surpassed $4 Tuesday, a first since 2022.

    “Many Americans have been concerned to see the recent rise in gasoline prices here at home,” the president said. “The short-term increase has been entirely the result of the Iranian regime launching deranged terror attacks against commercial oil tankers and neighboring countries that have nothing to do with the conflict.”

    “This is yet more proof that Iran can never be trusted with nuclear weapons. They will use them, and they will use them quickly. You all know that we built the strongest economy in history.”

    The president touted the economy under his leadership, saying that he has “taken a dead and crippled country — I hate to say that, but we were dead and crippled country after the last administration — and made it the hottest country anywhere in the world by far, with no inflation, record-setting investments coming into the United States, over $18 trillion and the highest stock market ever with 53 all-time record highs in just one year.”

    The president said those economic gains “all positioned us to get rid of a cancer that has long simmered.”

    “It’s known as the nuclear Iran, and they didn’t know what was coming. They’ve never imagined it,” he said. “Remember, because of our drill baby drill program, America has plenty of gas. We have so much gas.”

    The president said that, under his leadership, the U.S. is the “number one producer of oil and gas on the planet without even discussing the millions of barrels that we’re getting from Venezuela because of the Trump administration’s policies. We produce more oil and gas than Saudi Arabia and Russia combined.”

    “Think of that — Saudi Arabia and Russia combined,” he continued. “And that number will soon be substantially higher than that. There’s no country like us anywhere in the world.”

    The president stressed that “the hard part is done.”

    “When this conflict is over, the strait will open up. Naturally. It’ll just open up naturally. They’re going to want to be able to sell oil because that’s all they have to try and rebuild,” he said. “It will resume the flowing and the gas prices will rapidly come back down.”

    The president said it was necessary to “take that little journey to Iran to get rid of this horrible threat with our historic tax cuts, where people are just now talking about receiving larger refunds than they ever thought possible, they are getting so much more money than they thought. That’s from the great big, beautiful bill.”

    He added: “Our economy is strong and improving by the day and it will soon be roaring back like never before. It will top the levels that it was a month ago.”

    Trump thanks US troops for work in Middle East, Venezuela

    The president began his address Wednesday night by thanking U.S. troops for “the massive job they did in taking the country of Venezuela in a matter of minutes.”

    “That hit was quick, lethal, violent and respected by everyone all over the world,” Trump said, referring to the January operation.

    “We’re working along with Venezuela are, in a true sense, joint venture partners,” Trump said. “We’re getting along incredibly well in the production and sale of massive amounts of oil and gas — the second-largest reserves on Earth after the United States of America.”

    Shifting to Operation Epic Fury and the progress made, the president honored “the 13 American warriors who have laid down their lives and this fight to prevent our children from ever having to face a nuclear Iran.”

    “Twice this past month, I have traveled to Dover Air Force Base, and it’s been something I wanted to be with those heroes as they return to American soil,” he said. “And I was with them and their families, their parents, their wives, their husbands.”

    “We salute them, and now we must honor them by completing the mission for which they gave their lives,” the president said. “And every single one of the people, their loved one said, please, sir, please finish the job, every one of them, and we are going to finish the job and we’re going to finish it very fast. We’re getting very close.”

    Trump urges Americans to keep the Iran conflict ‘in perspective’

    “It’s very important that we keep this conflict in perspective,” the president said. “American involvement in World War One lasted one year, seven months and five days.”

    “World War Two lasted for three years, eight months and 25 days,” he continued. “The Korean War lasted for three years, one month and two days. The Vietnam War lasted for 19 years, five months and 29 days.”

    “Iraq went on for eight years, eight months and 28 days,” the president said.

    “We are in this military operation, so powerful, so brilliant against one of the most powerful countries for 32 days,” he said. “And the country has been eviscerated and, essentially, is really no longer a threat.”

Because of the actions we have taken, we are on the cusp of ending Iran’s sinister threat to America and the world. And I’ll tell you, the world is watching.”

    Trump rips into Obama’s Iran Nuclear Deal

    President Trump said ending former President Barack Obama’s Iran nuclear deal was among his top achievements as president, telling the nation he was “honored” to do it.

    “I terminated Barack Hussein Obama’s Iran nuclear deal disaster,” Trump said. “Obama gave them $1.7 billion in cash. Green, green cash took it out of banks from Virginia, D.C. and Maryland. All the cash they had.”

    The president went on to say that Obama “flew it by airplanes in an attempt to buy their respect and loyalty. But it didn’t work.”

    “They laughed at our president and went on with their mission to have a nuclear bomb,” Trump said. “His Iran deal would have led to a colossal arsenal of massive nuclear weapons for Iran, and they would have had them years ago, and they would have used them, would have been a different world.”

    The president said, “There would have been no Middle East and no Israel right now, in my opinion, the opinion of a lot of great experts, had I not terminated that terrible deal that I was so honored to do it.”

    “I was so proud to do it It was so bad right from the beginning,” he said. “Essentially, I did what no other president was willing to do.”

    He added: “They made mistakes, and I am correcting them.”

    The president said his “first preference was always the path of diplomacy, yet the regime continued their relentless quest for nuclear weapons and rejected every attempt at an agreement.”

    But the president said the Iranian regime “then sought to rebuild their nuclear program at a totally different location, making clear they had no intention of abandoning their pursuit of nuclear weapons.”

    The Senate on Thursday unanimously approved a bill aimed at partially reopening the Department of Homeland Security, which leaves out funding for immigration enforcement and border patrol.

    The measure now goes back to the House, which last week declined to take it up in favor of a different funding bill.

    House Republican leaders are expected to take up the measure this time, after reaching an agreement with Senate Majority Leader John Thune to pursue a larger bill this spring that will include spending for the president’s immigration and border agenda.

    It’s not clear when the House will vote. Both chambers are out on a two-week recess but have been convening brief ‘pro forma’ sessions.

    The move is a step toward potentially ending the ongoing partial government shutdown.

    全面移民议程

    WASHINGTON, April 2 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump took the short trip from the White House to the U.S. Supreme Court with his signature priority of cracking down on immigration largely intact, given repeated interventions by the nation’s highest judicial body in his favor. By the time he left, his luck may have run out.

    With Trump looking on from the public section of the ​courtroom – a historic first for a sitting president – most of the nine justices seemed unwilling on Wednesday to let him proceed with what may be the most audacious piece of his restrictive immigration agenda. At issue during the ‌arguments was his executive order that would deny birthright citizenship to hundreds of thousands of babies born each year on U.S. soil.

    The members of the court, led for more than two decades by conservative Chief Justice John Roberts, signaled that the administration’s arguments backing Trump’s effort are legally invalid and inherently impractical.

    “I do not think that Chief Justice Roberts wants to go down in history as presiding over a court that ended birthright citizenship,” said Kevin Johnson, an immigration law expert at the University of California, Davis.

    The court, whose 6-3 conservative majority includes three justices appointed by Trump, heard the administration’s appeal ​of a lower court’s decision that blocked his directive.

    THE CITIZENSHIP CLAUSE

    The lower court found Trump’s order to be inconsistent with the U.S. Constitution’s 14th Amendment, which long has been interpreted as granting citizenship to virtually anyone born on U.S. ​soil, with some narrow exceptions including the children of foreign diplomats or members of an enemy occupying force.

    The 14th Amendment’s provision at issue, called the Citizenship Clause, states: “All persons born or naturalized ⁠in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.”

    Johnson said the court will likely be swayed by the plain language of the Citizenship Clause and the “long, unbroken history” of birthright citizenship.

    “The questions of the justices touched ​on some possible cracks in the rule but it remains intact,” Johnson said.

    Roberts labeled as “quirky” the administration’s argument that the 14th Amendment’s phrase “subject to the jurisdiction thereof” limits large categories of immigrants.

    The chief justice also appeared to dismiss a contention by U.S. Solicitor General ​D. John Sauer, defending Trump’s order, that the risk of “birth tourism” – by which foreigners travel to the United States to give birth and secure citizenship for their children – is a reason why the longstanding interpretation of the citizenship provision is wrong.

    “We’re in a new world now,” Sauer said. “Eight billion people are one plane ride away from having a child who’s a U.S. citizen.”

    “Well, it’s a new world,” Roberts replied. “It’s the same Constitution.”

    Not all the justices appeared to doubt Trump’s policy, however. Conservative Justice Samuel Alito, for instance, seemed receptive to the administration’s argument that birthright citizenship should be extended ​only to those with “lawful domicile” in the U.S., which lawyers for the administration define as “lawful, permanent residence within a nation, with intent to remain.”

    SWEEPING IMMIGRATION AGENDA

    Trump’s order had instructed U.S. agencies not to recognize the citizenship of children born in the United States ​if neither parent is an American citizen or legal permanent resident, also called a “green card” holder. Trump issued it on his first day back in office in January 2025, and it stood as a key part of his sweeping agenda to restrict both legal and illegal immigration.

    Both ‌it and many ⁠other immigration-related measures his administration has taken, in particular to pursue a policy of mass deportation, were quickly challenged in court.

    The trajectory of Wednesday’s arguments contrasted with a number of actions the Supreme Court has taken that have allowed Trump to implement many of these policies while the legal challenges play out.

    For instance, the court has let Trump end humanitarian protections for migrants, deport them to countries where they have no ties and carry out aggressive immigration raids that can target individuals based on their race or language. In certain cases, however, the justices have ruled that the administration must treat migrants fairly, as required under the Constitution’s promise of due process.

    Elora Mukherjee, director of the immigrant rights clinic at Columbia University’s law school in New York, said it is not surprising that the court would rule ​against Trump on birthright citizenship despite siding with him on other ​immigration issues.

    “Birthright citizenship is core to our identity as ⁠a nation,” Mukherjee said. “It is unlike any of the other contexts … which are not central to how all Americans live their lives and are not central to how we as a nation for generations have viewed ourselves.”

    George Mason University law professor Ilya Somin, an expert on constitutional law, said the court has been overly deferential to Trump on many immigration-related issues.

    A defeat for the Republican president ​on birthright citizenship would be significant in part because “the weight of argument and precedent is strongly on one side here, more so than in most of the other cases,” Somin ​said.

    Though the court has frequently sided with Trump ⁠over the past year on immigration matters and beyond, the arguments potentially foreshadow a major blow to another signature priority for the president. The justices in a 6-3 ruling in February struck down the sweeping global tariffs that Trump pursued under a law meant for use in national emergencies.

    ‘STUPID PEOPLE’

    That ruling provoked Trump to lash out at the court, calling the justices who ruled against him unpatriotic and disloyal and two of his appointees – Neil Gorsuch and Amy Coney Barrett – an “embarrassment to their families.”

    The “Supreme Court’s not been acting very well,” Trump said on Wednesday, ⁠adding that certain justices ​he appointed want to show their independence. “Stupid people,” he called them.

    The fact that Trump was present in the elegant courtroom is unlikely to make a ​difference in the outcome of the case. A ruling is expected by the end of June.

    As he watched the proceedings, however, Trump might have spotted a marble frieze above the bench where the justices preside in their black robes.
