Mar-a-Lago shooting highlights President Trump security challenges | Fox News

Former Secret Service officials warn of low-tech threats facing Trump after latest Mar-a-Lago breach

Weekend Mar-a-Lago shooting marks latest incident after Butler rally attack and golf course confrontation as experts cite ‘copycat effect’ concerns

    By Morgan Phillips
    Fox News

    Published February 23, 2026 6:15pm EST

A deadly confrontation at Mar-a-Lago over the weekend is the latest in a string of high-profile security incidents involving President Donald Trump, as former Secret Service officials warn that low-tech, lone actors now pose one of the toughest challenges to presidential protection.

“It should be quite clear to all of us by now that Trump is the most threatened president in the history of the U.S.,” former Secret Service agent William “Bill” Gage told Fox News Digital Monday, pointing to multiple high-profile incidents in recent years. Unlike past presidencies, where threat levels often subsided over time, Gage said, “the longer he’s president, the more these attacks keep happening.”

Gage said the most difficult cases to prevent are often the least sophisticated. The recent incidents, he noted, were “super low-tech attacks by people with zero training,” using rudimentary weapons. “If you were standing behind them in line at Starbucks, you wouldn’t have given them a second look,” he said.

Gage said the threat landscape shifted over the course of his 12-year career as a Secret Service agent. When he joined the Secret Service in 2002, he said the agency was moving away from what he described as the traditional “lone gunman” model — figures like Lee Harvey Oswald, who assassinated John F. Kennedy, or international militants such as “Carlos the Jackal,” one of the world’s most wanted terrorists in the ’70s and 80s — and adapting to a post-9/11 world focused on coordinated terrorist networks like al Qaeda and later ISIS.

“But if you look at Butler and the two incidents at Mar-a-Lago, those were super low-tech attacks,” Gage said. “The low-tech actors are the ones that tend to slip through the cracks.”

He also warned of a potential copycat effect when details of such incidents become public.

“If it were up to the Secret Service, they would never report any of these incidents ever,” Gage said, arguing that widespread coverage allows others to “study what happened” and attempt to refine it.

In today’s hyperconnected political climate, he said, that dynamic adds another layer of complexity for agents trying to stop the next threat before it materializes.

In the early hours of Sunday, Feb. 22, 2026, a 21-year-old man identified as Austin Tucker Martin of North Carolina was shot and killed by U.S. Secret Service agents and a local sheriff’s deputy after entering the secure perimeter of Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.

Authorities say Martin drove through the north gate carrying a shotgun and a gasoline can. After being ordered to drop both, he dropped the can but raised the shotgun toward officers, who fired and killed him at the scene. Trump and First lady Melania Trump were in Washington at the time.

The incident marked the third highly publicized security encounter involving Trump in less than two years. In July 2024, a gunman opened fire at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, grazing Trump’s ear and killing an attendee before being shot by a Secret Service sniper. In September 2024, a man armed with a rifle was confronted by agents near Trump’s golf course while he was playing; that suspect was later convicted on attempted assassination charges.

While the incidents have drawn intense attention, former Deputy Assistant Director Don Mihalek said the latest Mar-a-Lago intrusion does not necessarily signal a breakdown in protective systems.

“He got through an exterior gate of an active club,” Mihalek told Fox News Digital. “This wasn’t someone reaching the president’s residence.” Agents confronted the suspect within seconds, he said, describing the rapid response as evidence that overlapping security layers functioned as designed.

Mihalek said presidential protection relies on multiple rings of security because outer perimeters at properties like Mar-a-Lago cannot be sealed in the same way as the White House. “If he ended up in the president’s house on Mar-a-Lago, that might be a different conversation,” he said.

He also cautioned against viewing recent incidents in isolation, noting that presidents routinely face roughly 2,000 threats per year, most of which are mitigated before the public ever becomes aware of them. “These just happen to be very public instances,” Mihalek said, arguing that the social media era amplifies perceptions of escalation.

GUNFIRE, ARSON AND VANDALISM: TRACKING POLITICAL VIOLENCE IN AMERICA

Mihalek pointed to last summer’s rally shooting in Butler as an example of how early intervention can be decisive, noting that local law enforcement had reportedly identified the suspect prior to the attack. “If somebody had walked up and said, ‘Hey, who are you?’ we wouldn’t be talking about Butler,” he said.

As Trump prepares to address Congress at the State of the Union, both former officials said the security posture at the Capitol is unlikely to change in response to the weekend incident.

The annual address is designated a National Special Security Event — the highest level of federal security planning — triggering coordination among the Secret Service, U.S. Capitol Police, FBI, War Department and other agencies. The designation allows for expanded perimeter controls, airspace restrictions and continuity-of-government planning.

Gage, who previously led advance planning for State of the Union addresses, said the event operates under a well-established security “blueprint” built to account for worst-case scenarios. “There’s really no way to increase it anymore,” he said.

Both former officials said the defining challenge for presidential protection today is unpredictability: individuals with minimal training, rudimentary weapons and the ability to find reinforcement online. Unlike organized extremist networks, such actors may leave few detectable signals before acting.

Peter Attia steps down as CBS News contributor

    February 23, 2026 / 6:40 PM EST / CBS News

Dr. Peter Attia has stepped down from his CBS News contributor role weeks after crude emails he exchanged with Jeffrey Epstein were made public.

In a statement, his spokesperson said that his role at CBS News “was newly established and had not yet meaningfully begun” and that “he stepped back to ensure his involvement didn’t become a distraction from the important work being done at CBS.” CBS News had no comment.

Attia, a doctor and author known for his research on longevity, was one of 19 contributors that CBS News announced on Jan. 27. Days later, the Department of Justice released its latest batch of files related to the Epstein case, with Attia’s name appearing hundreds of times.

Shortly thereafter, Attia apologized on social media for the “embarrassing, tasteless, and indefensible” emails he exchanged with the late sex offender. He denied any involvement in criminal activity, said he never flew on Epstein’s plane, never visited his island and never attended “any sex parties.”

He has not been accused of criminal wrongdoing.

(David Lawder)

US Senate Democrats introduce bill to force refunds of Trump tariffs deemed illegal

    February 23, 2026 9:50 PM UTC / Reuters

    By David Lawder

WASHINGTON, Feb 23 (Reuters) – A group of 22 U.S. Senate Democrats on Monday introduced legislation that would require President Donald Trump’s administration to fully refund within 180 days all of the revenue, with interest, collected from tariffs struck down by the U.S. Supreme Court.

The legislation would require the Customs and Border Protection agency, which collects tariffs at U.S. ports of entry, to prioritize small businesses.

The Supreme Court did not give instructions regarding any refunds on Friday when it struck down Trump’s broad tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), instead remanding the case to a lower trade court to determine next steps.

The Democrats’ legislation would require CBP to refund all IEEPA-based tariffs unlawfully imposed by Trump, plus interest, even if the import duties were finalized, or “liquidated” by CBP.

The 22 Democrats who co-sponsored the bill included Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senators Ron Wyden of Oregon, Edward Markey of Massachusetts and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, the top Democrats on the Senate’s Finance, Small Business and Foreign Relations committees, respectively.

“Senate Democrats will continue fighting to rein in Donald Trump’s price-hiking trade and economic policies,” Wyden said in a statement. “A crucial first step is helping people who need it most, by putting money back into the pockets of small businesses and manufacturers as soon as possible.”

A spokesperson for Republican Senate Majority Leader John Thune of South Dakota declined to comment on whether the Democrats’ bill would be considered.

But given that the bill was just introduced and needs to go through committee review, a decision on consideration would likely be some ways off.

House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters that the Republican-controlled House would steer clear of the question about returning tariff revenue.

“The White House is going to sort that out, and we have to give them the time and space to do it. This is an unprecedented event, of course, so there’s no playbook to follow,” Johnson, a Louisiana Republican, said. “I think they’ve (the White House) got good arguments on their side, and we’ll see how it shakes out. That’s not something that really involves the House at this point.”

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the legislation.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Sunday that the administration would follow the determination of lower courts on refunds. “We will follow what they decide, but it can take weeks or months until we hear from them,” Bessent said on CNN.

CBP is due to halt collections of the IEEPA tariffs at 12:01 a.m. EST (0501 GMT) on Tuesday.

Reuters reported on Friday that the Supreme Court decision made more than $175 billion IEEPA tariff collections subject to potential refunds, based on an estimate by Penn-Wharton Budget Model economists.

Their estimate from a ground-up forecasting model showed that IEEPA-based tariffs were generating more than $500 million per day in gross revenue.

U.S. women’s hockey team declines State of the Union invitation

    February 23, 2026 / 5:16 PM EST / CBS News

The U.S. women’s ice hockey team said Monday they will not be attending President Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday, citing scheduling conflicts.

In a statement to CBS News, a USA hockey spokesperson said the team — which defeated Canada in a stunning overtime at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Games to take home their third Olympic gold medal — is “sincerely grateful for the invitation” and “deeply appreciates the recognition of their extraordinary achievement.”

“Due to the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments following the Games, the athletes are unable to participate,” the statement said. “They were honored to be included and are grateful for the acknowledgment.”

As Iran’s new academic year began over the weekend, large-scale protests erupted across several universities — the first sustained campus unrest since the clerical regime’s bloody nationwide crackdown in December and January.

The Virginia-based Human Rights Activists News Agency said more than 7,000 people have been confirmed killed, while the whereabouts and safety of more than 11,000 others remain unknown.

The new flare-ups, which began Saturday, openly challenge the government to suppress dissent once again — even as the final death toll from the earlier wave of violence has yet to be made official, with tens of thousands feared dead. Now, for a third straight day, student protests have broken out.

“They are not stupid, they are brave,” said one anti-government protester who CBS News was able to make contact with in Tehran. “Because as you see in the protests in universities, there is the flag of the sun and the lion and they are chanting ‘Javid Shah.’ For both of these elements, they have (the) death penalty and prison. So they are brave to do this. They’re not stupid.”

The politically charged phrase “Javid Shah” means “Long live the shah.” It refers to Iran’s last monarch, Mohammed Reza Palavi, who was deposed during the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Inside Iran — and at demonstrations abroad — a vocal monarchist movement has been advocating for his son, Reza Pahlavi, to assume leadership should Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the clerical establishment fall.

At Iran’s universities, there have also been pro-regime demonstrations and at least one violent clash between opposing groups. The protester who spoke to CBS News said that speaking out risks prison or death. But with so many protesters killed, she said she feels guilt at still being alive.

“I am so ashamed, I am as (a) human, so ashamed that other people go out on (the) street and got killed — and I’m alive right now,” she said. “So I want my grief to be a voice for my people.”

She said she was among the many Iranians who protested last month in all of the country’s 31 provinces and nearly 200 cities. On Jan. 8, in Tehran, she said, “I saw people lying in the streets because they were shot. They were dead.” The next day, she said, “I witnessed a girl was shot two times and I was so afraid that I came back home.”

“Our most fear is to witness this regime be in power again, so we go and we protest again and again and again,” she said.

The protester asked not to be named for fear of government reprisal. On camera, she covered her face and eyes with a scarf and dark sunglasses. CBS News verified she was in Iran. Sunlight streamed into the room where she sat. She also displayed a live news program showing the current time in the country and said she and many Iranians are closely watching the significant U.S. military buildup around their region.

“I want to see military intervention into Iran,” she said.

The most advanced U.S. aircraft carrier, the USS Gerald R. Ford, sailed through the Strait of Gibraltar over the weekend and is now in the Mediterranean Sea, moving closer to the Middle East. The Ford and its strike group of cruise-missile destroyers, littoral combat ships and likely at least one submarine joined the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and its accompanying vessels, which have been in the region for nearly a month — creating what officials describe as the largest U.S. military buildup in the Middle East since the 2003 Iraq War.

“I feel very hopeful. I’m not scared at all,” the protester said. “I feel happy about the shift that the United States is bringing here. I want from God to begin a war in here. I’m not a person of war interest but in this situation, we don’t have any other chance.”

She said that if U.S. military intervention comes to Iran, she believes “many people will go out” to protest and attempt to bring down the regime.

And with President Trump preparing to deliver his State of the Union address on Tuesday night, she had a message for him — and hopes he has one for Iran.

“President Trump, you told us that help is on the way,” she said. “You promised us that you will help us go through this. They don’t stop executions in Iran. There was 11 people executed just today. Go on your promise and help us.”

She said she does not want negotiations between the U.S. and Iran and called Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi “a terrorist.”

The next round of indirect talks, mediated by Oman, is scheduled to take place in Geneva on Thursday.

Feb 23 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration is considering new national security tariffs on a half-dozen industries after a Supreme Court decision last week that invalidated many of his second-term levies, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

The new tariffs, to be issued under Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, would be separate from a 15% global levy Trump announced on Saturday, the report said, citing people familiar with the plans.

Reuters could not immediately confirm the report. The White House did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

The U.S. Supreme Court last week struck down Trump’s sweeping tariffs that he pursued under a law meant for use in national emergencies. In response, Trump imposed a temporary tariff of 10% on U.S. imports from all countries before raising it to 15%.

The new levies could cover industries like large-scale batteries, cast iron and iron fittings, plastic piping, industrial chemicals and power grid and telecom equipment, the report added.

Their policies may divide the country, but on social media, the president’s men are all crushing it as influencers, bro.

They’re in the locker room and the gym, and they’re not going to let matters of state force them to skip leg day.

► FBI Director Kash Patel took a break from law enforcement to chug a celebratory beer with the US men’s hockey team after their gold medal win, his latest trip on a government jet controversially blending work and pleasure.

    Ad Feedback

► Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s most recent workout video is a banger in which the chiseled politician exercises shirtless in jeans in a wood-paneled sauna with the entertainer Kid Rock before they drink whole milk together in a hot tub.

Kennedy has bonded with the music star since Kid Rock “made the decision to change his depraved, debauched and famous dissolute lifestyle,” Kennedy told Fox News.

In recent weeks, Kennedy, a recovering addict, also opened up to the podcaster Theo Von about his drug-fueled past.

“I used to snort cocaine off of toilet seats,” Kennedy said, explaining that he wasn’t afraid of Covid-19.

Kennedy also teamed up this month with Mike Tyson, who served three years in prison for rape in the 1990s, for a PSA to spread the gospel of weight loss by eating “real food.”

► Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth has posted multiple videos of himself bench-pressing. Hegseth has worked himself up to 315 pounds on the bench. That impressive weight could make up for the questionable form he exhibited in previous videos featuring pullups and kettlebells.

Who says the leader of the Department of War, as the Trump administration calls the Pentagon, can’t have a little fun while preparing for possible military action against Iran? Hegseth would not have been able to join in the beer chugging, however; he swore to give up alcohol while in office after his pre-Pentagon partying became an issue at confirmation hearings.

For these middle-aged men, proving they can be one of the boys is a key part the image they’re presenting online.

Social media strategy has been an important part of the Trump administration’s PR, including the propagandist action movie-style videos produced by the Department of Homeland Security and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem’s much-discussed photo ops in various uniforms.

Noem’s videos put her at the center of immigration enforcement. Other top members of Trump’s administration want to seem fit for military service.

► Vice President JD Vance posted photos of himself joining Navy SEALs for a beach workout in December. He climbed ropes, jogged and hopped in an inflatable boat. (Vance, a former Marine, deployed to Iraq as a public affairs specialist in 2005.)

The man at the top, President Donald Trump, is known for engaging in locker room talk — but he is also a teetotaler and is notoriously opposed, on a philosophical level, to the idea of exercise, so don’t look for beer-drinking or workout videos from him. But his campaign benefactor and former DOGE chief Elon Musk posted an AI-generated video of Trump, in a business suit, playing hockey against Canadian players.

Trump called in on Patel’s phone to congratulate the men’s team after their overtime win and invite them on the fly to Tuesday’s State of the Union Address.

Trump promised he would do whatever is necessary, including dispatching a military plane, to get the men’s hockey players to Washington, even if it requires landing in the snow.

He did caution he would also have to invite the women’s team, which also won a thrilling overtime win against Canada last Thursday, or else, “I would probably be impeached.”

The president has spent a good bit of time during his second term promising to save women’s sports from what he and others frame as the threat of transgender athletes, so it was jarring to hear him mention the dominant women’s team almost as an afterthought.

The women’s team in a statement on Monday thanked Trump for the offer but declined, citing previous “academic and professional commitments.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters Monday that the House would try to figure out the logistics of accommodating hockey players for the speech, Politico reported. The address takes place in the House chamber, which is typically overstuffed for the annual event.

This screengrab taken from a video shows FBI Director Kash Patel celebrating the US men’s hockey team’s Olympic win in their locker room, in Milan, Italy, on February 22, 2026.

    Obtained by CNN

The Patel video shows the noted hockey fan in a locker room celebration, but he has, like Hegseth, also moved to impose new fitness standards at his agency. He wants FBI agents to be like police in addition to their more traditional investigative role. That includes requiring female agents to do at least one pullup.

“If you wanna chase down a bad guy and put him in handcuffs, you better be able to do a pull-up,” Patel said during congressional testimony.

Patel has also posted workout videos, including his attempt at Kennedy and Hegseth’s challenge for service members and others to do 50 pullups and 100 pushups in less than 10 minutes. Patel posted his version from his official FBI director account on X.

Why some Democratic congresswomen will wear white to Trump’s State of the Union

    February 23, 2026 / 3:15 PM EST / CBS News

Washington— When President Trump gives his State of the Union address on Tuesday night, more than a dozen Democratic congresswomen plan to again make a sartorial political statement by wearing white, according to the Democratic Women’s Caucus.

Democratic congresswomen have used fashion as a form of protest against Mr. Trump since his first address to a joint session of Congress in 2017, then donning suffragist white in support of women’s rights.

In the years since, they’ve mostly stuck with that choice, with the exception of 2018, when some wore black in support of the #MeToo movement. They also broke tradition during last year’s speech, which wasn’t technically a State of the Union, wearing pinkto highlight their opposition to Mr. Trump’s policies.

Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández of New Mexico, who leads the 96-member Democratic Women’s Caucus, told CBS News that the color choice
