Demonstrators take part in an anti-Trump protest, after a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot Renee Nicole Good on January 7 during an immigration raid, outside of the Capitol building, in St. Paul, Minnesota, on January 20, 2026.

    Tim Evans/Reuters

The Justice Department is bracing for a new wave of resignations in the Minnesota federal prosecutors’ office over recent immigration enforcement efforts in the state, sources familiar with the matter said.

Prosecutors threatened to resign during a recent meeting in which US Attorney Daniel Rosen had tried to convince his office to get on board with the Trump administration’s efforts in Minnesota, the sources said. His plea so far hasn’t assuaged concerns within the office that the administration is taking potentially unlawful steps.

One of the sources said that if the resignations came to fruition, they could decimate the US Attorney’s office as they are pursuing cases against immigrants and protesters, and pile onto an already thin staff after an earlier wave ofresignationsover how the Justice Department responded to a federal officer’s shooting of Renee Good.

The meeting and potential resignations are being watched closely by Justice Department officials in Washington, and the department has been taking steps to pull prosecutors from other Midwestern offices into Minnesota to help. The Justice Department declined to comment for this story.

Attorney General Pam Bondi was in Minnesota on Wednesday, her second trip in as many weeks. At least some of her meetings there were to boost morale at the US Attorney’s office, according to a person familiar with the visits.

Justice Department prosecutors from other states are in Minnesota to assist the office while it is understaffed, and the department could request more. Previous resignations this month included some leaders in the office beneath Rosen. The Pentagon is also sending dozens of military lawyers to Minneapolis to assist in federal prosecutions.

Also on Wednesday, the chief judge of the federal district court in Minnesota complained in a sharply worded order that he believes Homeland Security officials were violating court orders by the dozens this month in cases related to immigrants in custody.

The court and the US attorney’s office prosecutors are fielding search and arrest warrants related to protests as well as immigrant detainees’ requests for relief, leading to increased tensions between prosecutors and judges.

FBI searches Fulton County elections office seeking 2020 ballots. Here’s what we know.

    Updated on: January 29, 2026 / 12:02 AM EST / CBS News

The FBI executed a search warrant Wednesday at an elections office in Fulton County, Georgia, seeking to take ballots in an investigation that a source told CBS News is linked to the 2020 presidential election.

Fulton County confirmed that the FBI executed a search warrant at its election operations center and “sought a number of records related to 2020 elections.” A state senator who was present told reporters the FBI sought hundreds of boxes of ballots.

The search drew several top Trump administration officials. Deputy FBI Director Andrew Bailey and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard were both spotted outside the elections office late Wednesday. A news conference with federal officials was initially scheduled then later canceled.

“Director Gabbard has a pivotal role in election security and protecting the integrity of our elections against interference, including operations targeting voting systems, databases, and election infrastructure,” a senior administration official told CBS News.

The FBI operation follows years of claims by President Trump — without evidence — that the 2020 election was rigged, many of which have zeroed in on Fulton County.

What is the FBI investigating in Fulton County?

It’s not entirely clear what information the FBI is seeking, though the agency confirmed in a statement that it carried out a “court authorized law enforcement action.”

But the bureau appears to be investigating violations of two federal criminal laws, according to a search warrant shared on social media by Fulton County commissioner Marvin Arrington Jr.

One of those laws makes it a crime for elections officials to intimidate voters and to deprive them of a fair election by submitting fraudulent ballots or voter registration applications. The other law requires elections officials to retain federal election records for 22 months.

The warrant was signed by U.S. Magistrate Judge Catherine Salinas. Typically, in order to get a search warrant, authorities must show probable cause that there is evidence of a crime at a particular location. It’s unclear what evidence the FBI has presented.

Democratic state Sen. Josh McLaurin told reporters the FBI showed up at the elections office seeking to take “700 boxes of ballots,” and was seen loading boxes of ballots into trucks. McLaurin posted a video of an FBI evidence response team at the office.

The Justice Department lawyer listed on the search warrant was Thomas Albus, interim U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri. It’s unclear why Albus’s name appears on the warrant rather than a Justice Department official based in Georgia. A spokesperson for Albus’ office did not respond to a request for comment from CBS News.

The search took place at the Fulton County Elections Hub and Operations Center, but the warrant shared by Arrington was addressed to the Office of the Clerk of Court — seemingly due to a discrepancy in Georgia law.

Earlier in the day, the FBI showed up with a warrant for the Fulton County elections office, but ballots and other 2020 election paperwork are technically held under seal by the clerk of the Fulton County Superior Court under state law, forcing federal officials to seek a new warrant for the clerk’s office, Fulton County Commissioner Dana Barrett told CBS News.

Barrett said both the FBI and Clerk of Courts Che’ Alexander were filming the process of inventorying the boxes for chain-of-custody purposes.

The federal government has not publicly commented on why it carried out the search. The FBI said in a statement it can’t provide details because its “investigation into this matter is ongoing.” The White House referred a request for comment to the FBI.

Local Democratic politicians have strongly criticized the FBI and suggested it could be related to Mr. Trump’s fraud claims.

Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia said: “I suspect today’s raid is a continuation of this sore loser’s crusade, despite repeated audits and independent reviews confirming that Donald Trump was indeed defeated.”

Democratic Rep. Nikema Williams of Georgia demanded that the FBI cut off its investigation, writing that “raids and renewed investigations based on the lie that President Trump won the election lack a factual basis and only serve to intimidate voters and undermine the integrity of our upcoming elections.”

Robb Pitts, chairman of the Fulton County Board of Commissioners, said in a news conference late Wednesday: “For the life of me, I still cannot understand the fascination about the 2020 election, which occurred six years ago. That election has been reviewed, it’s been audited, and in every case, in every instance, we get a clean bill of health.”

Pitts also said that, following the search, “I can no longer certify that these ballots are secure.”

Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, specifically questioned Gabbard’s involvement. He wrote that “there are only two possible explanations” for why the director of national intelligence would be present at the FBI’s search.

“Either Director Gabbard believes there was a legitimate foreign intelligence nexus — in which case she is in clear violation of her obligation under the law to keep the intelligence committees ‘fully and currently informed’ of relevant national security concerns — or she is once again demonstrating her utter lack of fitness for office that she holds by injecting the nonpartisan intelligence community she is supposed to be leading into a domestic political stunt designed to legitimize conspiracy theories that undermine our democracy,” Warner wrote.

Why is the Trump administration interested in Fulton County?

Home to Atlanta and some of its suburbs, Fulton County is the most populous county in Georgia and a key Democratic stronghold — and it played a central role in Mr. Trump’s false claims that the 2020 presidential election was stolen.

In the weeks following the 2020 race, Mr. Trump’s allies claimed, without evidence, that widespread fraud in Fulton County led to former President Joe Biden’s narrow 11,779-vote win in Georgia, and urged state officials to reverse the results. At one point, Mr. Trump told Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger: “I just want to find 11,780 votes.”

Trump-appointed Attorney General Bill Barr said in 2020 that the Justice Department hadn’t found evidence of fraud on a wide enough scale to tip the results of the election. Biden’s win in Georgia was also confirmed in both a machine recount and an audit that involved hand recounts by every county in the state.

But Mr. Trump has continued to insist that the 2020 election was “rigged,” and since returning to the White House, he has vowed to investigate the issue.

“It was a rigged election. Everybody now knows that,” the president said in a speech last week in Davos, Switzerland. “People will soon be prosecuted for what they did. It’s probably breaking news, but it should be. It was a rigged election.”

Last month, the Justice Department filed a civil lawsuit against Alexander, the Fulton County clerk of courts, asking a judge to force her to hand over the county’s 2020 election ballots and other voting records. The department said she had failed to hand over the records as part of a Justice Department investigation into whether the county complied with federal elections law.

Alexander asked the court to dismiss the lawsuit, arguing the Justice Department hadn’t offered a legitimate reason to seek the records. She also said the records were under seal, and would need to be unsealed by a state judge in Fulton County. A judge has not yet ruled on the matter.

Separately, Fulton County drew national attention because the county’s District Attorney Fani Willis criminally charged Mr. Trump and more than a dozen other people with racketeering in 2023, accusing them of illegally trying to overturn Mr. Trump’s 2020 election loss.

The case was stalled for years, in part because an appellate court removed Willis from the case over a romantic relationship she had with a special prosecutor she hired to assist in the investigation, posing a “significant appearance of impropriety.” Another prosecutor who stepped in to replace Willis decided to dismiss the prosecution “to serve the interests of justice.”

Takeaways from CNN’s Minnesota town hall

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, in a CNN town hall Wednesday night, stood by the city’s sanctuary policies and repeated his demand that federal immigration agents leave the city.

Frey’s comments come as state, local and federal officials look for ways to tamp down tensions in the wake of the killings of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, two US citizens who lived in Minneapolis.

Frey spoke on Monday with President Donald Trump, who then appeared to soften his comments on the mayor and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. But Trump’s tone changed Wednesday, when he said the mayor is “playing with fire” by insisting local police won’t play a role in enforcing federal immigration laws.

During the town hall, three Republican state lawmakers also said blame for the chaos in Minneapolis is shared between the Trump administration and Democratic state and local leaders.

And Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison said state officials still do not know the names of the federal agents involved in Pretti’s killing.

Three faith leaders said they were grappling with leading a city where grieving residents feel a sense of rage. Father Jim Cassidy of the St. Joan of Arc Catholic Community Church said that “the challenge is that we clergy can also get very riled up.”

“One of the things that I ask people to remember is their own power,” said Rev. Elizabeth Macaulay, the lead pastor at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church. “I may not have the energy today, but someone else beside me will, and together we can get through this. I believe it strongly. And it’s awful, and it hurts.”

Here are six takeaways from CNN’s town hall:

‘The present status needs to change’

Frey said he had a “productive” and “collegial” conversation with Trump on Monday. But didn’t back down at all Wednesday night from his demand that federal immigration agents leave Minneapolis.

“I’m saying the same things now that I said then,” he said.

Frey had two specific demands. First, he said, state officials should lead the investigations into the killings of Good and Pretti. He said he doesn’t trust a federal government that “came to a conclusion from the very beginning” that the those killings were acts of self-defense and that Good and Pretti were domestic terrorists.

He also said he wanted the federal operation that has seen thousands of immigration agents swarm the Twin Cities in recent weeks come to a rapid conclusion. Frey told the audience he said as much in a meeting with Trump border czar Tom Homan, who the president sent to Minnesota this week to oversee the administration’s efforts there in an attempt to ease tensions in the wake of Pretti’s killing.

Frey said a meeting between Homan and state and local officials didn’t end with a commitment to ending the federal effort “on any given timeline.”

“But,” he said, “there was a general consensus that the present status needs to change.”

He said he hopes that the number of agents in Minnesota will be drawn down, and the violent clashes between federal agents and local observers will end.

“But again, I’ll believe it when I see it,” Frey said.

    Local role apprehending undocumented immigrants?

Trump on Wednesday attacked Frey on social media, saying the third-term Democratic mayor was “playing with fire” after Frey said Tuesday that Minneapolis would not change its sanctuary policies and would not help enforce federal immigration laws.

But Frey insisted Wednesday night that the city and its police “are going to do our jobs, not the federal government’s jobs.”

“I want our police spending time protecting the residents of our city — stopping homicides and carjackings; making sure violent offenders are investigated and held accountable,” he said.

That isn’t to say Minneapolis law enforcement wouldn’t cooperate with federal agents to apprehend any criminals, Frey said.

“Importantly when you’re trying to catch a murderer or a rapist, the first question that you ask is not, ‘Where are you from?’” he said.

“The question that’s important is, ‘Did they rape somebody? Did they murder somebody?’ And if they did, we investigate and we partner to do so,” he said.

“I don’t want them spending a single second hunting down a father who just dropped his kids off at daycare, is about to go work a 12-hour shift, and happens to be from Ecuador,” Frey said. “That guy? He makes our city a better place. We’re proud to have him in Minneapolis.”

He explained the city’s sanctuary policies, saying Minneapolis officials want undocumented immigrants to feel like they can call 911 when necessary without fearing deportation. He called those policies “a safety strategy.” And he said he didn’t want police spending their time investigating those who haven’t committed crimes.

Police chief says immigration agents using ‘questionable’ tactics

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara speaks during a CNN Town Hall in Minneapolis on January 28, 2026.

    Austin Steele/CNN

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara was sharply critical of federal immigration agents’ tactics in the city, saying that viral social media videos of encounters between those agents and local observers “show a lot of methods that are questionable and tactics that just do not appear safe — for agents or community.”

He said Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents’ approach “looks like policing 20 or 30 years ago,” and said those agents often did not appear to be working “in a coordinated way.”

O’Hara also sought to contrast federal immigration agents’ approach with Minneapolis police. He said in the city, local law enforcement has been “placing a very strong emphasis on trying to deescalate situations whenever possible.”

“That means we try to slow things down. We try to calm the situation, and not unnecessarily escalate things,” he said.

Frey says video of separate Pretti clash doesn’t justify killing

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey speaks during a CNN Town Hall in Minneapolis on January 28, 2026.

    Austin Steele/CNN

Frey watched a video of a prior altercation between Pretti and federal immigration agents for the first time during Wednesday night’s town hall.

The newly surfaced video showed Pretti kicking the taillight of a law enforcement vehicle before being tackled to the ground. Frey said regardless of that video’s contents, it did not justify Pretti’s killing more than a week later.

“Are we actually making the argument that Alex Pretti should be killed for something that happened, like 11 days prior to the shooting itself?” he said. “I think we should be talking about the circumstances that actually led to the killing and what took place and those circumstances.”

‘It’s literally all the people involved’

Republican Minnesota lawmakers State Reps. Nolan West and Elliott Engen as well as State Sen. Michael Holmstrom join a CNN Town Hall in Minneapolis on January 28, 2026.

    Austin Steele/CNN

Three Republican Minnesota state lawmakers who participated in CNN’s town hall didn’t absolve the Trump administration for its role in the chaos that has played out in the streets of Minneapolis, but they said state and local Democratic officials bear a share of the blame.

“It’s literally all the people involved,” said state Rep. Nolan West. “That’s what we’re seeing, is that there is not a desire to lower the temperature. It’s immediately tit-for-tat, we’re not going to work together.”

State Rep. Elliott Engen also faulted “our supposed leaders” for the “absolute unrest” in Minneapolis. He said Walz, the Democratic governor, should have cooperated with federal immigration officials to help identify targets for deportation.

Engen and the other Republicans did break with Trump and federal officials on several key points.

Engen acknowledged the role federal immigration agents have played in some clashes. “There’s been a lot of negative rhetoric that’s been spewed both ways, I will not deny that,” Engen said.

West emphasized that he didn’t favor deporting all undocumented migrants, calling it “fundamentally impossible” and “economic suicide.”

State Sen. Michael Holmstrom broke with Trump over the president’s assertion that Pretti should not have been carrying a gun. “I certainly disagree with the president on that,” he said, emphasizing his support for the Second Amendment.

However, Holmstrom said he trusts the federal government to handle the investigation into Pretti’s killing. “I believe that they can conduct a proper investigation,” Holmstrom said.

Ellison says state officials don’t know names of agents who shot Pretti

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison during a CNN Town Hall in Minneapolis on Wedneday, January 28.

    Austin Steele/CNN

Ellison said the federal government’s refusal to release the names of the immigration agents who shot Pretti “feels like a cover-up.”

An exasperated Ellison insisted that Minnesota officials are moving to investigate Pretti’s killing, and he said the state moved to secure a court order to protect evidence. But he also acknowledged that Minnesota officials do not know the names of the agents involved in the altercation in which Pretti was killed.

“We have heard some reports that the names might be — exist, in a report form,” he said. “I haven’t heard them yet. And I am confident that we will get those names. But the fact that I don’t know them yet is an absurdity, and an example of how little cooperation that we’re getting.”

Ellison also said Vice President JD Vance’s claim — which came in the wake of Good’s killing — that federal immigration agents are “protected by absolute immunity” is wrong, and said he would like to debate the vice president on that point.

“Anybody who commits a crime in this state can be charged and held accountable for that crime,” Ellison said.
