Some Republican senators openly expressed their concerns about the Justice Department’s new “anti-weaponization fund” in a tense meeting Thursday with Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.

“You could call it a curveball right at the end, and nobody could hit it,” Alabama Sen. Tommy Tuberville told reporters after the meeting, in reference to the compensation fund.

Sources inside the meeting say Blanche did not provide adequate answers or clarity about the $1.776 billion Justice Department fund announced earlier this week, which will provide taxpayer-funded payouts to people who allege the legal system has been “weaponized” against them. It’s part of an agreement between President Trump and the federal government to settle his lawsuit against the IRS and Treasury Department over the leak of his tax returns.

There are major questions about how the fund will operate and who might receive payments from it. The Justice Department has said the fund will be administered by a commission of five people appointed by the attorney general, one of whom will be chosen “in consultation with congressional leadership,” and there will not be any partisan requirements to file claims. Some Trump allies and pardoned Jan. 6 defendants have said they may apply.

Critics have blasted the settlement agreement, with congressional Democrats casting it as a “slush fund,” which the Justice Department has pushed back on.

One GOP source who was in the room said the Trump administration dropped the news of the fund on lawmakers at the last minute — and with bad messaging. The source said the administration does not seem to grasp how poorly the public views it.

A senior Republican aide said that a bill to fund Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement that the Senate was supposed to vote on Friday “would have been passed, if not for the actions of the administration. … Members were ready to vote until the DOJ anti-weaponization fund announcement.”

Now, Congress is going into recess until next month without passing the measure, which Mr. Trump had said he wanted to see on his desk by June 1. If voting had gone forward, it may have opened the floodgates for a number of uncomfortable amendments and votes related to the “anti-weaponization fund,” including on who would be eligible to receive payouts.

“I’m not going to get into the specific amendments,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said of Democrats’ strategy to force votes on the reconciliation bill. “We felt that this corruption was so vile that we were going to do everything we can in reconciliation to try to get it undone.”

The GOP aide said after the meeting with Blanche that the Justice Department still has a lot of questions to answer. Republican senators are frustrated because the department “didn’t need to settle the case when they did and didn’t need to announce this fund. The administration needs to address member issues on this.”

Blanche was sent to the Hill to fix the problem his department caused, and didn’t fix it, the aide said.

In a statement Thursday, a Justice Department spokesperson said the meeting included “a healthy discussion on the settlement.”

“[Blanche] made clear that the Anti-Weaponization Fund announced Monday has nothing to do with reconciliation, indeed not a single dime from the money the President is seeking in reconciliation would go toward anything having to do with the Fund,” the spokesperson said. “We will continue to work with the Senate to get critical reconciliation funds approved.”

CBS News has reached out to the Justice Department for further comment on the meeting.

Tuberville told CBS News that Blanche told lawmakers during Thursday’s meeting that people who assaulted law enforcement would not be compensated under the “anti-weaponization fund.” Blanche did not rule out allowing payouts for Jan. 6 rioters convicted of attacking police when he testified before a Senate appropriations subcommittee earlier this week.

“We’re not going to reward people that attack policemen and people of authority,” said Tuberville, who generally supports the idea of the fund. “[Blanche] said that.”

GOP Sen. Susan Collins of Maine also told CBS News that she raised the issue with Blanche and he seemed to suggest people who assaulted law enforcement would not receive settlements from the fund. Still, she wants to see “language” and more clarity from the Justice Department.

Sen. Bill Cassidy, a Louisiana Republican who has become an increasingly vocal critic of the compensation fund, appeared unswayed by the meeting with Blanche.

“The kind of gut reaction is that’s not right, and if it’s not right, we shouldn’t be doing it,” Cassidy told reporters.

Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell did not attend the meeting due to a hearing that he was chairing but also panned the DOJ fund.

“So, the nation’s top law enforcement official is asking for a slush fund to pay people who assault cops? Utterly stupid, morally wrong – Take your pick,” McConnell said in a statement provided to CBS News.

The controversy over the fund comes after Mr. Trump intervened in some Senate Republicans’ primary campaigns. Cassidy lost his primary last weekend after Mr. Trump endorsed his opponent, and Sen. John Cornyn is fighting to save his seat from a challenge mounted by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, also endorsed by Mr. Trump earlier this week. Texas Republicans will vote in a primary runoff on Tuesday.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune of South Dakota suggested to reporters that the dynamic between the White House and Republican senators has been hampered by the president’s efforts to drive out Cassidy and Cornyn.

“I think it’s hard to divorce anything that happens here from what’s happening in the political atmosphere around us,” Thune said, adding, “There’s a political component to everything we do around here, so yeah, you can’t disconnect those things.”

Thune also said he was not consulted on the fund before it was announced.

“It would be nice if they had consulted, and I think they probably would have gotten plenty of advice from lots of folks about it,” he said. “But it’s water under the bridge now, and you know, you play the hand you’re dealt, and we’ll sort it out from here. But you know, obviously, it became a more complicated and bumpy path than we had hoped for.”

Rep. Tom Kean Jr. says he expects to return to Congress ‘in the next couple of weeks’ after missing 100 votes

The New Jersey Republican holds one of the country’s most competitive seats ahead of the 2026 midterms

    May 21, 2026 9:45pm EDT / Fox News

    By Brittany Miller Fox News

Fox News chief congressional correspondent Chad Pergram reports on Rep. Tom Kean Jr.’s, R-N.J., absence from Congress for weeks, missing more than 50 votes since March, on ‘Fox Report.’

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

Rep. Tom Kean Jr., R-N.J., said Thursday that he expects to return to Congress “in the next couple of weeks” after missing 100 consecutive House votes during an extended absence tied to what his office has described only as a “personal health matter.”

“My doctors are confident that I’m on the road to a full recovery,” Kean, 57, told the New Jersey Globe in his first public comments since stepping away from Capitol Hill in March.

“I understand the need for public transparency, and I appreciate the support of my constituents,” he added. “I anticipate that in the next couple of weeks, I’ll return to voting and to the campaign trail.”

Kean last voted on March 5 and has missed every House roll call vote since then, according to GovTrack. His absence has drawn heightened attention because Republicans hold a slim majority in the House and because Kean represents one of the country’s most competitive congressional districts ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

His office has repeatedly declined to disclose details about the illness, saying only that the congressman is focused on recovery and expected to return “soon.” Fox News Digital reached out to a representative for Kean for additional comment.

Last week, Kean’s father, former New Jersey Gov. Tom Kean Sr., told NJ.com that his son was recovering from a “serious illness.”

“You can’t say definitely, but their best guess is now he’ll be out in two or three weeks,” Kean Sr. said, referring to doctors treating his son. “Any time you’ve been through a serious illness, you can’t be 100% the day you get back. You’re gonna be able to do things, but gradually ramping up.”

Kean Sr. also said doctors expect his son to make a full recovery but declined to discuss the diagnosis.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., told reporters this week that he had spoken with Kean recently but was unaware of details surrounding the congressman’s condition.

“We’re expecting him back here soon. He’s had a medical issue,” Johnson said Wednesday. “I don’t even know the details.”

The absence has become a growing political issue in New Jersey as Democrats target Kean’s swing district. Kean is running unopposed in the Republican primary on June 2, while several Democrats are competing for their party’s nomination.

Earlier this month, a top Kean aide told The New York Times, “There’s no cameras where Tom is.”

Kean consultant Harrison Neely said this week the congressman remains committed to seeking reelection.

“What I can tell you is that the congressman is dealing with a personal health matter. He is focused on his recovery,” Neely told the New York Post.

Navy’s acting secretary says $14 billion Taiwan arms sale put on “pause” over Iran war

    May 21, 2026 / 11:41 PM EDT / CBS/AFP

The acting secretary of the U.S. Navy said Thursday that arm sales to Taiwan had been put on “pause” to ensure that the American military had sufficient munitions for its Iran operations.

Asked at a congressional hearing about the stalled $14 billion weapons purchase by Taiwan, Acting Secretary Hung Cao said that “right now we’re doing a pause in order to make sure we have the munitions we need for Epic Fury — which we have plenty.”

“But, we’re just making sure we have everything, then the foreign military sales will continue when the administration deems necessary.”

The State Department and the Pentagon did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Cao’s remarks.

President Trump has not committed to following through with the sale, raising concerns over his commitment to support for Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory.

Ahead of his recent state visit to China, Mr. Trump said he would speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping about the arms sales, a departure from Washington’s previous insistence that it will not consult Beijing on the matter.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on May 15 after departing Beijing, Mr. Trump confirmed Xi had brought up the U.S. weapons sale. The president told reporters he made “no commitment either way” on the issue and declined to publicly state whether the U.S. would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese attack.

Following his remarks, congressional lawmakers from both parties said that the Trump administration should continue to provide arms to Taiwan.

The U.S. must “arm Taiwan so they can defend themselves for deterrence against Chairman Xi,” Rep. Michael McCaul, a Texas Republican and former House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman, said last week.

The U.S. recognizes only Beijing, but under U.S. law is required to provide weapons to Taiwan, a self-ruled democracy, for its defense.

China has sworn to take the island and has not ruled out using force, ramping up military pressure in recent years.

WASHINGTON, May 21 (Reuters) – Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin privately warned that authorities could stop processing international travelers ‌and cargo at major U.S. airports in “sanctuary cities” that have declined to cooperate with the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown, sources told Reuters.

Mullin, who publicly made the threat in April during a Department of Homeland Security funding dispute, privately told travel executives last week that the department could opt to stop customs and immigrations processing of international travelers at airports in cities such as Denver, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Newark, Seattle and San Francisco.

The Atlantic earlier reported Mullin’s comments to travel executives and cited sources as saying the move would likely occur some time after the end of the FIFA World Cup in the United States in July.

    DHS declined to comment.

Airlines for America, which represents major passenger and cargo airlines, said reducing customs staffing “at ‌major airports would have a devastating effect on the airline and tourism industries, causing a significant operational disruption to carriers, travelers and the flow of international cargo.”

U.S. Travel, which represents major airlines, hotel chains, rental car firms and others, said on “domestic and international inbound travel alike, we urge governments at all levels to adopt policies that promote the free and efficient flow of legitimate travelers.”

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said at a U.S. House hearing Thursday that he was not familiar with Mullin’s remarks and did not express support.

“We shouldn’t shut down air travel in a state that doesn’t agree with our politics,” Duffy said

More than 50 million international travelers arrived at the three major New York airports alone last year.

Epstein’s longtime assistant accused three previously unknown abusers connected to him, Oversight chair says

Jeffrey Epstein’s longtime assistant gave the House Oversight Committee three new names of alleged abusers in the convicted sex offender’s network — a revelation that committee chairman James Comer described as a promising lead in his panel’s investigation into Epstein’s misdeeds.

The assistant, Sarah Kellen, provided the names in a closed-door interview on Thursday, Comer said. He declined to name the individuals, but said they were not previously known and promised to release a transcript of Kellen’s interview as soon as possible.

“The new names, that’s what we’ve been waiting for,” Comer said, adding, “I’m more optimistic today than I have been a long time.”

Kellen is a polarizing figure in Epstein’s orbit whose work with the disgraced late financier gave her access to significant information on his activities. In 2007, she was labeled by law enforcement as one of Epstein’s potential co-conspirators, and many believe she helped him recruit and abuse girls. But she has described herself as a victim of Epstein’s abuse, and some observers acknowledge her experience is complicated, even if law enforcement did investigate her for possibly aiding Epstein.

Throughout hours of closed-door testimony on Thursday, Kellen said she was not Epstein’s co-conspirator and had no idea she was going to be named in Epstein’s non-prosecution agreement from the early 2000s. On the contrary, Kellen testified she “worked for and was sexually and psychologically abused by Jeffrey Epstein,” according to a copy of her opening remarks shared with CNN.

Kellen described in graphic detail some of the sexual abuse she says she endured.

“I want this Committee to know that the abuse happened on average on a weekly basis, and was at times violent,” Kellen said, according to the remarks. “It included Jeffrey entering my room in the middle of the night and putting his fingers inside me, waking me up from my sleep. It included an occasion in Palm Beach when he trapped me in the gym by lowering the metal hurricane shutter, blasted the music so loud that no one could hear, choked me, and violently raped me.”

Democratic Rep. Melanie Stansbury told reporters that she asked Kellen about her experience at Epstein’s New Mexico ranch, where a state investigation is ongoing, and Kellen said that was one of the places she was abused by Epstein.

Kellen said that for years, it was simply not possible for her to leave Epstein’s powerful grip: “I had nowhere else to go. I had no money, no family, no education, and no sense that I deserved any better.”

Stansbury said she also asked Kellen if she believed Epstein’s co-conspirator Ghislaine Maxwell should have been moved to a lower security prison or if Maxwell should receive a presidential pardon. To both questions, Kellen said no, and even cast blame on Maxwell for some of Epstein’s wrongdoing, saying “Maxwell turned Epstein into the monster he became,” according to Stansbury.

Comer said that the Justice Department did not interview Kellen until 2019, arguing that was an example that investigators had mishandled the Epstein case. CNN has reached out to the Justice Department for comment.

“More evidence emerges every time we bring somebody in that the government failed the victims. That’s the obvious,” Comer stated.

Comer said that after listening to her testimony, he believes Kellen was a victim of Epstein’s crimes, not a potential co-conspirator.

“Of all the people that we’ve interviewed thus far, this was by far the most substantive and productive interview that we’ve had. She was very brave coming forward. I can’t imagine how difficult it was for her to go into detail about the abuse that she endured at the hands of Epstein and Maxwell,” Comer said.

But others said they had more questions for Kellen. Democratic Rep. Raja Krishnamoorthi said the panel should consider bringing Kellen back in for an interview under subpoena because there were a number of questions Kellen didn’t answer in the voluntary setting of Thursday’s interview.

“What I want to hear is more discussion about other actors, other entities, other women, who else were potential conspirators in this,” Krishnamoorthi said.

Another source familiar with Kellen’s testimony told CNN that while Kellen was willing to answer questions about her own abuse, she would not share any information about the abuse she knew others to have suffered.

And while Kellen said she never witnessed any inappropriate behavior by President Donald Trump, she testified that she believed that Epstein and Trump were once close given that Epstein had photographs of Trump hanging around all of Epstein’s properties, the source added.

Comer said that Kellen testified that Epstein used to go to Mar-a-Lago to workout, but Trump kicked him out because Epstein “hit on a members’ daughter or something.”
