2026 Winter Olympics by the numbers: The athletes, events and milestones of the Milano Cortina Games

    2026-02-05T06:00:03-0500 / CBS News

    By Rachel Gold,

    February 5, 2026 / 6:00 AM EST / CBS News

The 2026 Winter Olympics are bringing thousands of athletes from around the world together for more than two weeks of competition on snow and ice. From the athletes and events to records and costs, the Games are a gold mine for statistics.

Here’s a look at the 2026 Winter Olympics by the numbers:

2: Number of previous times Italy has hosted Winter Olympic Games

Italy first hosted the Winter Olympics in 1956 in Cortina d’Ampezzo, followed by the 2006 Games in Turin.

The country has also hosted the Summer Olympics once, in Rome in 1960.

8,494: Square miles the venues for the Winter Olympics will cover

The 2026 Games will be the first Olympics co-hosted by two cities, with competitions held across 13 venues in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo.

The dual host cities mean it will become the most widespread Games in Olympic history, according to the International Olympic Committee, spanning nearly 8,500 square miles of northern Italy.

Milan and Cortina are about 250 miles apart by road, nearly a five-hour drive.

“This approach allows the maximum use of existing venues, reducing the need for new construction and, as a consequence, minimising the carbon footprint,” states an IOC press release.

Out of 13 venues, 11 will be existing or temporary, with the exception of a new 16,000-seat ice hockey stadium which has been in construction for about two years. The abandoned Porta Romana railway yard is also seeing a renovation, according to the International Olympic Committee. It’ll be home to the Milan Olympic Village during the games then converted into 1,700 student housing units.

    92: National Olympic Committees participating

The athletes compete as representatives of their “National Olympic Committees” rather than as countries.

At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Russia and Belarus were banned from competing because of the war in Ukraine, a policy that carries into this year’s Games, with athletes competing as “Individual Neutral Athletes” under a neutral flag.

2,916: Total number of athletes expected to compete

According to data from the International Olympic Committee, approximately 2,916 athletes are expected to compete in this year’s Winter Games.

The U.S. will have the largest presence at the Winter Olympics with 235 athletes (including three alternate athletes), followed by Canada (211 athletes) and host nation Italy (195 athletes).

The 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France, had just 1,801 athletes. Participation has grown in the decades since.

There was a brief drop in athlete participation at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway.

232: Athletes competing on Team USA

A total of 232 athletes and three alternate athletes will compete on Team USA, featuring 98 returning Olympians who have won a combined 22 gold medals, according to the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

Seven athletes will make their fifth Olympic appearance, including bobsledders Kaillie Humphries and Elana Meyers Taylor, snowboarders Nick Baumgartner and Faye Thelen, alpine skier Lindsey Vonn, figure skater Evan Bates and ice hockey player Hilary Knight.

Meanwhile, 32 athletes on the roster previously competed at the Youth Olympic Games, with 20 of them set to make their Olympic debut in Milano Cortina. The 232-athlete roster is expected to be the largest U.S. Winter Olympic team ever, surpassing the 228 who competed at PyeongChang in 2018.

Search the full list of U.S. Olympic athletes:

8: New events debuting at Milano Cortina Winter Olympics

Athletes will compete in 116 events across 16 Olympic disciplines and six Paralympic sports. The 2026 Games will introduce ski mountaineering — known as skimo — as a new sport, along with eight new events:

    • Men’s sprint in skimo
    • Women’s sprint in skimo
    • Mixed relay in skimo
    • Men’s dual moguls in free style skiing
    • Women’s dual moguls in free style skiing
    • Women’s doubles in luge
    • Mixed gender team in skeleton
    • Women’s large hill in ski jumping

2 million: Fans attending the Winter Olympics

U.S. diplomatic officials in Italy urged Americans to book early, since organizers expect about 2 million people to descend on the venues in northern Italy to attend the Games.

Tickets range from $30 for cross-country skiing to nearly $1,400 for the figure skating exhibition gala. The full schedule of events can be found here.

CBS News will continue to crunch the numbers on the Paralympic Games after qualified athletes are announced on March 2.

Wildfire smoke pollution linked to tens of thousands of deaths in U.S. per year, study finds

    2026-02-05T06:27:00-0500 / CBS News

Chronic exposure to pollution from wildfires has been linked to tens of thousands of deaths annually in the United States, according to a new study.

The paper, published Wednesday in the journal Science Advances, found that from 2006 to 2020, long-term exposure to tiny particulates from wildfire smoke contributed to an average of 24,100 deaths a year in the lower 48 states.

“Our message is: Wildfire smoke is very dangerous. It is an increasing threat to human health,” said Yaguang Wei, a study author and assistant professor in the department of environmental medicine at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Other scientists who have studied the death toll from wildfire smoke were not surprised by the findings.

“The estimates they’re coming up with are reasonable,” said Michael Jerrett, professor of environmental health science at the University of California, Los Angeles who was not involved in the study. “We need more of them. It’s only if we’re doing multiple studies with many different designs that we gain scientific confidence of our outcomes.”

“These are real lives” being lost due to wildfire smoke

The paper’s researchers focused on deaths linked to chronic exposure to fine particulate matter, or PM2.5 — the main concern from wildfire smoke.

These particles can lodge deep into lungs and enter the bloodstream. Short-term exposure can trigger coughing and itchy eyes, but longer term, they can make existing health problems worse and lead to a range of chronic and deadly health issues, including respiratory illness, cardiovascular and neurological diseases, and premature death.

“Wildfire smoke PM2.5 has emerged as significant environmental hazard in the U.S., and it’s driven by increasing frequency and intensity of wildfires due to climate change,” said Min Zhang, a postdoctoral student at the Icahn School and a study author.

Along with decades of forest mismanagement, growing development in fire-prone areas has expanded the “urban wildland interface,” increasing wildfire risk with real consequences for human health, said Jerrett.

“Nobody’s going to have ‘wildfire death’ on their death certificate unless the fire actually burned them or a tree fell on them or something like that,” said Jerrett. “But many of the people that are dying from this exposure are ones that are already more vulnerable. These are real lives that are being lost. This is not some arbitrary abstract statistical concept.”

The fires that ravaged Los Angeles in 2025 likely were deadlier than initially estimated, according to research published last August. In that study, researchers analyzed data on the number of deaths in Los Angeles County from Jan. 5 to Feb. 1, 2025 — the period when the Palisades and Eaton fires tore through the city — and estimated that 440 more deaths could be attributed to the fires, compared to the expected number based on data from previous years.

A 2024 study estimated tens of thousands of people in California died premature deaths due to wildfire smoke from 2008 to 2018.

That study estimated 2,305 people died from PM2.5 exposure in Sonoma County from 2008 to 2018 due to wildfire smoke, CBS News Bay Area reported. The study also estimated 2,231 deaths in Santa Clara County, 2,063 deaths in Contra Costa County, and 2,057 deaths in Alameda County.

    How researchers approached the study

The study’s authors analyzed the link between annual average exposure to PM2.5 from wildfire smoke and deaths by county in the lower 48. They used federal mortality data across 3,068 counties of all causes of death and several specific ones — circulatory, neurological and respiratory diseases, as well as mental and behavioral disorders, tumors and endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases.

They also included deaths related to falls and transport accidents — which are unlikely to be linked to wildfire smoke — to ensure their other observations weren’t biased.

“We found no association for car accidents and falls, while for other diseases we found statistically significant effects,” said Wei. Deaths from neurological diseases saw the biggest increase with exposure to these particulates.

How pronounced the link was between particulate exposure and death varied by season and demographics. A stronger association appeared during cooler periods, and people in rural areas and younger communities appeared to be more vulnerable.

Researchers also found that with every 0.1 microgram per cubic meter increase of PM2.5 across all these places, about 5,594 more people died each year.

Jerrett said the study had the benefit of a large study population and that it includes most causes of deaths in the U.S. But he said the county-level data could have led to over or underestimates because wildfire smoke is very dynamic. “It doesn’t just blanket a large county all at once. There are going to be parts of the county that gets it a lot worse.”

The study also did not account for other important factors, such as whether a person smokes, he said.

Rollbacks on climate policy pose risks, authors say

Kai Chen, an associate professor of environmental sciences at the Yale School of Public Health who has also studied the topic, said: “I really like that they examined both the smoke and nonsmoke PM2.5.” Various research has found that PM2.5 from wildfire smoke has bigger health impacts than pollution from other sources, such as car emissions, said Chen in an email, who was not involved in the study.

The Trump administration’s rollbacks in climate change policy, even as the more destructive wildfires become more frequent in large part due to global warming, poses critical risks, the study’s authors said. Quantifying the deadly threat that PM2.5 from wildfires poses to human health shows the need for effective, urgent mitigation strategies, backed by Environmental Protection Agency monitoring and regulation, they said.

“This highlights the importance of controlling wildfire sourced PM2.5, which is currently not regulated by the EPA as it is usually regarded as natural disasters,” Chen agreed.

Trump returns to National Prayer Breakfast as faith takes center stage in second term

    Published February 5, 2026 5:45am EST

President Donald Trump will attend the National Prayer Breakfast on Thursday for his sixth appearance at the bipartisan gathering focused on faith and prayer for the nation.

“Today, President Trump will unite our country through the power of prayer at the 74th National Prayer Breakfast,” White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers told Fox News Digital. “President Trump has made unprecedented strides to protect our God-given rights and has delivered on his promise to reverse Joe Biden’s divisive policies that weaponized the federal government against men and women of faith. President Trump has secured major victories for religious freedom – from defending innocent life to restoring biological truth and protecting parents’ fundamental rights.”

Trump is expected to speak at 8:30 a.m. at the Washington Hilton at the event that typically draws hundreds of lawmakers, business leaders, state officials and foreign dignitaries.

This year, Fox News Digital learned notable attendees include Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and his wife Jennifer Hegseth, Attorney General Pam Bondi and John Wakefield, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Kathryn Burgum, Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins and Lisa Collins, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, U.S. Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer and Marlo Greer, and House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La.

El Salvador President Nayib Bukele and Democratic Republic of the Congo President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, with his wife Denise Nyakero Tshisekedi, are among foreign leaders who will attend the breakfast.

Musicians Michael W. Smith and Jelly Roll will also attend, Fox News Digital learned.

Trump first attended as president in 2017 and returned last year, using his remarks to pledge action against what he called anti-Christian bias tied to the Biden administration.

“While I’m in the White House, [we will protect Christians] in our schools, in our military, in our government, in our workplaces, hospitals and in our public squares, and we will bring our country back together as one nation under God, with liberty and justice for all,” Trump said during last year’s event.

Nearly a year ago to the day, Trump launched the White House Faith Office via executive order, tasking it with leading the executive branch’s outreach to faith-based groups, community organizations and houses of worship. In honor of its one-year anniversary and the prayer breakfast, Fox News Digital learned the office launched a campaign showing “150 reasons why President Trump is the most pro-faith, pro-life, and pro-religious liberty president in American history.”

“He protected religious liberty and affirmed faith in America. He has fought anti-Christian, antisemitic, and other forms of anti-religious bias while ending the weaponization of government against all people of faith. He has expanded school choice, protected parental rights, restored biological truth, uplifted families, ended illegal and divisive DEI policies, stopped taxpayer funding for abortion, restored free speech, and stood side-by-side with Israel,” the Faith Office said of Trump.

The National Prayer Breakfast was established in 1953 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower accepted an invitation to join members of Congress for what was then an early version of the event. The morning event is built around speeches and prayer, and historically features remarks from the president and other invited speakers.

[RELIGIOUS LIBERTY IS AMERICA’S CORE RIGHT. WE MUST DEFEND IT FOR KIDS AND PARENTS]

Trump’s presence at the annual event comes as he increasingly discusses his faith and relationship with God following the assassination attempt against him in July 2024 that left him with an injury to the head when a gunman opened fire on a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

“There was blood pouring everywhere, and yet, in a certain way I felt very safe, because I had God on my side,” Trump said from the stage of the Republican National Convention just days after the attempt on his life. “The amazing thing is that prior to the shot, if I had not moved my head at the very last instant, the assassin’s bullet would have perfectly hit its mark, and I would not be with you tonight.”

[TRUMP GETS IT: PRAYER ISN’T THE PROBLEM. SILENCING IT IS]

Trump has elevated faith as a governing theme in his second term, including signing executive orders to create a White House Faith Office and issuing a proclamation urging Americans to renew their commitment to the country’s “Nation under God” identity.

“From the establishment of the Jamestown Colony to the Pilgrims’ arrival at Plymouth Rock, through periods of war and peace and through every challenge and every triumph, religious faith has indelibly shaped our character, informed our laws, and strengthened our national spirit,” a proclamation establishing “Religious Freedom Day 2026” on Jan. 16 reads.

“I pledge that I will never stop fighting to restore America as a Nation of prayer, a country of faith, and a radiant beacon of liberty and justice for all,” Trump’s recent proclamation continued.

A US House special election in New Jersey becomes a Democratic testing ground

A crowded primary in the New Jersey suburbs Thursday has become an early testing ground for the debates that will shape the Democratic push to retake the US House in this year’s midterms.

The race to replace now-Gov. Mikie Sherrill has drawn a range of candidates – local elected officials, community advocates, a former paratrooper, a former lieutenant governor and a former congressman.

Democrats continue to grapple with how best to motivate their base and win back voters who’ve drifted away. National Democratic officials have drilled down on cost-of-living issues, while progressives and grassroots activists have criticized party leaders, arguing their opposition to President Donald Trump has been anemic.

In the reliably blue 11th District, candidates have taken the latter approach. They’ve railed against immigration enforcement, condemned the deaths of two Minneapolis protesters shot by federal agents and bemoaned the erosion of democratic norms.

Other familiar themes are at play in Thursday’s Democratic primary, including the power of the Democratic establishment and the influence of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee and other well-funded outside groups.

Four candidates have emerged as perceived front-runners: Essex County Commissioner Brendan Gill, former New Jersey Rep. Tom Malinowski, former New Jersey Working Families Alliance leader Analilia Mejia, and former Lt. Gov. Tahesha Way.

“For each of those four people, I could give you a list of reasons why they will win and a list of reasons why they won’t,” said Laura Matos, a New Jersey-based Democratic strategist. “It really comes down to who turns out to vote, and which candidate brings their voters out.”

The rest of the field includes former paratrooper Zach Beecher; community advocate, lawyer and comedian J-L Cauvin; Passaic County Commissioner John Bartlett; Cammie Croft, who worked in the Obama administration; Jeff Grayzel, a two-term mayor of Morris Township; Chatham Borough Council Member Justin Strickland; and community advocate Anna Lee Williams.

Once a Republican stronghold, Democrats have held the 11th District – which includes parts of northern New Jersey’s Essex, Morris and Passaic counties – since Sherrill flipped the seat in 2018. The district shifted further left in 2022 after redistricting.

Whoever wins Thursday’s primary will be the odds-on favorite to win the April 16 general election against the lone Republican candidate, former mayor of Randolph Township Joe Hathaway. They’ll also have an edge in the June primary for a full term beginning in January.

    A look at a wide-open race

Leading into Thursday’s vote, the candidates have called on their party to take on a more confrontational stance in Washington, particularly towards US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Several candidates argued the agency should be defunded.

“We see what’s going on out in Minnesota,” said Way, the former lieutenant governor and secretary of state. “Totally unacceptable, unconstitutional and un-American, with the ICE raids, but also trying to extort personal data off of the voter rolls.”

Way noted her own fights against Republicans who sued to access New Jersey’s voter data as an example of her record pushing back on the administration.

Gill has pointed to his experience as both an elected official and former congressional staffer, as well as his work with his local Democratic Party, which organized a “No Kings” protest.

“I think I have, at certain times, felt that we needed to be more aggressive in our pushback against what’s coming out of Washington,” he said, arguing Democrats should have rejected more of Trump’s political appointees.

Mejia, a longtime Democratic activist who served as the national political director for independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ 2020 presidential campaign, said she was drawn to enter the race after Democrats ended last year’s government shutdown without securing an extension of the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced premium tax subsidies.

“Like many Democrats in this moment, I am not only appalled at MAGA, at Trumpism, at Donald Trump’s administration – their overreach, their corruption, their blatant hypocrisy – but I’m also ticked off at my own Democratic leadership,” she said.

Mejia has solidified her position in the progressive lane with endorsements from Sanders, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and others. But she has trailed on the money front – she’s sixth in fundraising, well behind Malinowski and Gill.

“What I hope we will see on Thursday, is regular, everyday voters reclaiming the drive, tone, tenor, focus of our own party,” Mejia said.

A former congressman’s background becomes a benefit and a liability

Malinowski, who flipped New Jersey’s 7th District during the 2018 wave but lost his 2022 reelection bid, has argued he’s the only who has already pushed back on Trump in Congress. He would retain his seniority in Congress.

“I think voters have been drawn to our campaign because I can credibly argue that I’ll be effective on the day I’m sworn in,” he said in an interview.

His background as a former congressman has been both a benefit and a minor liability. He has led the field in fundraising and has broader name recognition thanks to his years as a swing-district lawmaker. But he’s also been subject to attack ads over his failure to properly disclose his stock trades while in office. United Democracy Project, a group aligned with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, has spent more than $1.7 million on TV ads attacking Malinowski, according to AdImpact.

The group has highlighted his stock trading and sought to tie him to Trump, pointing to his vote for a bipartisan 2019 omnibus spending bill that include funding for ICE. Malinowski has been vocal about what he called the agency’s “unlawful and despicable” enforcement operations, and called the attack “outrageous.”

“It’s our goal to build the largest bipartisan pro-Israel majority in Congress,” said Patrick Dorton, a spokesperson for the United Democracy Project. “We think there are better candidates than Tom Malinowski on the US-Israel relationship in the NJ-11 race.”

Gill has also laid into Malinowski over the disclosure issue, arguing the controversy contributed to his 2022 loss to Republican Tom Kean Jr. The county commissioner, who launched his own campaign outside his childhood home in the district, has also knocked Malinowski for switching districts.

“I’m drawing a contrast,” Gill said. “Those are decisions that he made as a member of Congress that cost us that seat and that’s why I have an issue, quite frankly, with the nature of this candidacy, where he deserted and left the people that he represented in District 7.”

While in office, Malinowski described his failure to disclose his trades on time as “a matter of carelessness on my part, which I regret and take full responsibility for,” according to a report from the former Office of Congressional Ethics. The House Ethics Committee’s investigation into his stock trade disclosures ended when Malinowski left office and would need to be reopened by the committee to continue.

Malinowski said the attacks on stock trading Gill has raised in this race mirror those Republicans made against him in 2022. He also raised concerns about the late infusion of spending against him, prompted by AIPAC’s opposition to his willingness to place conditions on aid to Israel. The former congressman previously had the group’s support.

“Their goal is to intimidate the Democratic Party,” he said. “If it works here, we’re going to see the same play in multiple other Democratic primaries. If we stop it here, the party will be more immune.”

Dutch Queen Maxima joins army as a reservist, as “safety can no longer be taken for granted”

    February 5, 2026 / 7:27 AM EST / CBS News

The Netherlands’ Queen Maxima has joined her country’s army as a reservist, voicing concern about national security.

Maxima, 54, “has chosen to register now because our safety can no longer be taken for granted,” according to a statement released Wednesday by the Dutch royal family, “and she, like many others, wants to contribute to that safety.”

After training with the Royal Netherlands Army, the Argentinian-born Dutch queen will be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and “like other reservists, she will deploy where needed,” the royal family’s statement said.

Queen Maxima begins her training at the Royal Military Academy in Breda, on 4 February, 2025 Netherlands Ministry of Defense

Photographs released by the family show the queen taking part in “Mental Skills” training at the Dutch Royal Military Academy in Breda, in the south of the country, taking part in various exercises. In one she is seen aiming a handgun.

An accompanying video set to high-energy rock-dance music shows Maxima smiling in green army fatigues before jumping into a pool, then rock climbing in a helmet.

Queen Maxima is not the first member of a European royal family to serve in their respective country’s armed forces. Her own daughter Princess Catharina-Amalia recently finished her military training and was promoted to corporal.

Last year, Norway’s Princess Ingrid Alexandria finished 15-months of service as a gunner in an engineering battalion. And Princess Leonor of Spain is in the last of three years of training across the Army, Navy and Air Force.

Many members of Britain’s royal family, living and dead, have also served in the forces – including King Charles II, his son Prince William and his younger son Prince Harry, who served two tours in Afghanistan.

    A European army?

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the perceived unpredictability of the U.S. as a staunch NATO ally, have shaken Europe’s sense of security in recent years.

President Trump has pushed European countries to dramatically boost their domestic defense spending and reduce what he sees as their reliance on U.S. forces in NATO. He also recently tried to wrestle Greenland away from Denmark, causing a rift in the alliance, and even threatening allies with tariffs before backing down.

In January, European Union Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius said the EU should consider having a 100,000-strong joint military force, separate from NATO.

“We need to start to invest our money in such a way that we would be able to fight as Europe, not just as collection of 27 national ‘bonsai armies,’” he said.

“We refuse to remain dependent on others for our protection,” the Netherlands’ newly formed coalition government said last week, adding that it will require young people to complete a mandatory survey about military service.

“If this does not yield sufficient results,” the government said, “we will consider other steps, such as reintroducing selective compulsory attendance.”

Nine European NATO member states already have some form of conscription: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden and Turkey.

Croatia plans to reintroduce mandatory military service this year, compelling men between the ages of 19 and 29 to undergo two months of basic training, and several other countries – including France and Germany – have recently introduced schemes to incentivise young people to serve.

(People for the American Way)合作,哈里斯称之为”下一代竞选活动的线上组织项目”。

Kamala Harris is relaunching — one of her accounts on X.

The former vice president and 2024 Democratic presidential nominee on Thursday rebooted the KamalaHQ account, which has over 1 million followers on X and more than 5 million on TikTok, as just Headquarters, which in a partnership with the left-leaning People for the American Way she’s calling “an online organizing project for next generation campaigning.”

“Conservatives build permanent organizing infrastructure. Progressives have historically built machines that dismantle after Election Day. Headquarters is the end of that cycle,” reads a press release from the new group, which also now plans to post on Substack, YouTube and other platforms.

“It’s where you can go online to get the latest of what’s going on, and also to meet and revisit with some of our great and courageous leaders — be they elected leaders, community leaders, civic leaders, faith leaders, young leaders. I’m really excited about it. Stay engaged, and I’ll see you out there,” Harris says in a video recorded for the launch.

Harris recently began a second leg of touring around her best-selling campaign memoir that is less about recounting the stories in “107 Days” and more geared to her interest in talking about what she thinks needs to happen next. Though Harris says she has stepped out of politics for the moment, she has left the door open to another presidential run.

So far, Harris has been talking regularly about how both Democrats and Republicans failed people, so that, as she put it in a speech to the Democratic National Committee meeting in Los Angeles in December, “The American dream has become more of a myth than reality.”

“Government is viewed as fundamentally unable to meet the needs of its people. In these and so many other ways, the people feel that the very institutions that were designed to support them have failed them,” Harris said then. “They are not wrong.”

Harris will have an honorary role in Headquarters as chair emerita, with a group of advisers and operatives drawn from both her campaign alumni and People for the American Way, including her top senior adviser Kirsten Allen and Rob Flaherty, who served as deputy campaign manager for Joe Biden and then Harris in 2024. Parker Butler and Lauren Kapp, who led the KamalaHQ team in 2024, will remain involved.

Harris will not have editorial oversight of the posts, according to the new group, leaving those to the advisers and People for the American Way. She will, though, continue on her book tour through the spring.
