Sonny Jurgensen, Hall of Fame quarterback and Washington sports icon, dies at age 91

    2026-02-06T11:21:00-0500 / CBS/AP

Sonny Jurgensen, the Hall of Fame quarterback whose strong arm, keen wit and affable personality made him one of the most beloved figures in Washington football history, has died, his family announced Friday. He was 91.

The Washington Commanders shared a statement from Jurgensen’s family on social media confirming his death.

“We are enormously proud of his amazing life and accomplishments on the field, marked not only by a golden arm, but also a fearless spirit and intellect that earned him a place among the legends in Canton,” the family said.

The family called him the “steady, humorous, and deeply loving heart of our family.”

“While he has taken his final snap, his legacy will remain an indelible part of the city he loved and the family he built,” the family said.

Jurgensen arrived in Washington in 1964 in a surprise quarterback swap that sent Norm Snead to the Philadelphia Eagles. Over the next 11 seasons, Jurgensen rewrote the team’s record books.

He topped 3,000 yards in a season five times, including twice with Philadelphia, in an era before rules changes opened up NFL offenses. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1983 and remains the only Washington player to wear the No. 9 jersey in a game.

“Sonny Jurgensen is, and always will be, one of the defining legends of Washington football,” said controlling owner Josh Harris, who grew up a fan. “For me, Sonny was the embodiment of what it means to don the burgundy and gold: tough, smart and endlessly devoted to this franchise and its fans.”

Jurgensen’s four-plus decades of association with the franchise in Washington as a quarterback and then as a broadcaster made him a one-name celebrity in the nation’s capital. He was the one and only Sonny, contrary but loyal: the everyman red-headed football player with the out-of-shape belly who kept a connection with fans but could also pull out a cigar and hobnob with the team owner.

Notorious for breaking curfew, Jurgensen was also known for ignoring coaches and joking about his less-than-ideal physique. He more than compensated with his pinpoint passing from the pocket, helping make the then-Redskins exciting and competitive again, leading the team to more victories in his first three seasons than the club had won in its previous six.

“All I ask of my blockers is 4 seconds,” he once said. “I try to stay on my feet and not be forced out of the pocket. I beat people by throwing, not running.”

That’s exactly what he did on Nov. 28, 1965, when he dismissed the crowd’s boos and rallied Washington from a 21-0 deficit to a 34-31 win over the Dallas Cowboys by throwing for 411 yards and three touchdowns. The game was the highlight of coach Bill McPeak’s five losing seasons with the club.

“I’m glad the crowd let me stay in,” Jurgensen said sarcastically after the game. “It was decent of them, and maybe Bill McPeak appreciates it, too.”

Jurgensen played through numerous injuries and even won over the notoriously tough Vince Lombardi, who coached Washington to its first winning season in more than a decade in 1969. Lombardi said of Jurgensen, “He is the best I have seen.”

But Lombardi died the following year, and Jurgensen never really hit it off with defense-minded successor George Allen. Washington acquired Billy Kilmer, generating the great “Sonny vs. Billy” debates that lasted until Jurgensen retired after the 1974 season.

“Few players could rival Sonny Jurgensen’s genuine love of the game that continued long after his playing days,” Hall of Fame president Jim Porter said. “Watching Sonny throw a football was like watching a master craftsman create a work of art.”

Jurgensen finished his career with 2,433 completions for 32,224 yards and a 57.1 completion percentage. He threw 255 touchdown passes, 189 interceptions and had a career rating of 82.6. He made the Pro Bowl five times, led the NFL in passing yards five times, and will always be in the record books for an untoppable 99-yard touchdown pass to Gerry Allen in 1968.

Washingtonians too young to remember Jurgensen as a player came to adore him for his astute observations as part of the radio broadcast trio of “Sonny, Sam and Frank.” Jurgensen, Hall of Fame linebacker Sam Huff and play-by-play man Frank Herzog would fuss and laugh while both rooting for and criticizing the burgundy and gold.

Jurgensen also became an unofficial confidant-at-large around the organization. He took Gus Frerotte under his wing when the young quarterback was battling Heath Shuler for the starting job in the mid-1990s. He became a member of Daniel Snyder’s inner circle after Snyder bought the team in 1999, arriving in the owner’s helicopter and getting a special sideline seat to watch practices.

Still, Jurgensen wouldn’t hesitate to question decisions and performances he didn’t like, especially when it came to quarterbacks. He often pined for the days when QBs were allowed to call their own plays.

Born Christian Adolph Jurgensen III in Wilmington, North Carolina, on Aug, 23, 1934, Jurgensen was a two-way star at Duke and was drafted in the fourth round by the Eagles in 1957. He sat behind Norm Van Brocklin until 1961, when he took over the starting job and threw for 3,723 yards, 32 touchdowns and 24 interceptions — all league highs.

Three years later he found himself on the way to Washington on April 1, 1964.

“Someone came in and said, ‘You were traded to the Redskins,’” Jurgensen said in a 2007 interview. “I said, ‘No, it’s April Fool’s Day, you’re kidding.’ He said, ‘No, I’m not kidding. I just heard it on the radio.’

    “So I was shocked.”

Actor Timothy Busfield indicted on 4 counts of sexual contact with a child in New Mexico

    Updated on: February 6, 2026 / 1:08 PM EST / CBS News

A New Mexico grand jury indicted actor Timothy Busfield on four counts of criminal sexual contact of a child, the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s office said Friday.

The case is expected to move forward to trial, the office said on social media. The case will be prosecuted by the office’s Special Victims Unit.

An arrest warrant was issued for Busfield in January after an investigator with the Albquerque Police Department filed a criminal complaint that said a child reported the actor touched him inappropriately multiple times on the set of the series “The Cleaning Lady” when the boy was 7 and 8 years old. He said was scared to report the abuse because he feared Busfield would get mad at him.

In a statement provided to CBS News on Friday, Busfield’s attorney, Stanton “Larry” Stein, said the indictment was not unexpected and that Busfield would fight the charges.

“What is deeply concerning is that the District Attorney is choosing to proceed on a case that is fundamentally unsound and cannot be proven at trial,” Stein said. “The detention hearing exposed fatal weaknesses in the State’s evidence — gaps that no amount of charging decisions can cure. This prosecution appears driven by something other than the facts or the law.”

Busfield directed and acted in the series, which ran on Fox for four seasons and ended in 2025. The complaint alleged that the abuse occurred between November 2022 and spring 2024, and was reported after the boy’s mother took them to a hospital on the advice of a lawyer.

The boy’s twin brother also told authorities he was touched by Busfield, but did not specify where, according to the complaint. He said he feared getting in trouble for reporting the alleged abuse.

Warner Bros., the producer of “The Cleaning Lady,” conducted its own investigation into the abuse allegations but was unable to corroborate them. In an interview with police last fall, Busfield told authorities that the boys’ mother was seeking revenge for the boys being replaced on “The Cleaning Lady” and said he would have likely picked up and tickled the boys while on set. He described the set as a playful environment.

On January 13, Busfield turned himself into police. He was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center in Bernalillo County on a child sex abuse charge. Busfield denied the allegations in a video provided to TMZ.

The same day Busfield turned himself in, another allegation was reported to law enforcement, according to a court filing. A father of a then-16-year-old girl alleged Busfield kissed and inappropriately touched the girl while auditioning for a role at a California theater that Busfield co-founded. Busfield begged the family not to report the incident if he received therapy, according to the filing, and the girl’s father agreed. The incident occurred several years ago, the documents said.

Busfield’s lawyer also said all the charges against the actor are “completely false.”

Busfield was initially held without bond before being released from jail pending trial in late January.

Timothy Busfield appears at a hearing at the Bernalillo County Courthouse, Tuesday, Jan. 20, 2026, in Albuquerque, N.M. AJ Skuy / AP

The district attorney’s office did not share further details about the charges Busfield faces.

Busfield is known for appearances in “The West Wing,” “Field of Dreams” and “Thirtysomething,” the latter of which won him an Emmy for outstanding supporting actor in a drama series in 1991. He is married to actor Melissa Gilbert, who deactivated her Instagram account amid the allegations and said through a publicist she will not release any statements at the request of Busfield’s attorneys while the legal process unfolds.

Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., called out President Donald Trump for a post on Truth Social on Friday, demanding that the president take it down.

The post in question, which Trump put on his Truth Social Thursday night, depicted former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama as monkeys or apes.

Scott, the only Black member of the Senate GOP, called on Trump to remove the post.

“Praying it was fake because it’s the most racist thing I’ve seen out of this White House,” Scott said. “The President should remove it.”

Scott found an unlikely ally in his request in Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., who similarly called on Trump to take the post down.

“Racist. Vile. Abhorrent. This is dangerous and degrades our country — where are Senate Republicans? The President must immediately delete the post and apologize to Barack and Michelle Obama, two great Americans who make Donald Trump look like a small, envious man,” Schumer said on X.

The post has since been removed, and a Trump advisor told Fox News Digital that “the president did not see the video before it was posted.”

Scott and Trump have shared a warm relationship since he ran and ultimately dropped out of the Republican presidential race last year.

He now chairs the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the Senate GOP’s campaign arm tasked with keeping Republicans’ thin majority in the upper chamber and expanding it during the 2026 midterm cycle.

Scott has rarely bucked Trump, positioning himself as a top ally to the president — he was on the short list of possible vice presidential picks before Trump ultimately tapped then Sen. JD Vance, R-Ohio.

However, he has recently broken with the president on the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell.

Scott, who also chairs the Senate Banking Committee, said during an interview with Fox Business earlier this week that he didn’t believe Powell had committed a crime during his testimony to the committee last year.

(Al Drago/Getty Images)

(Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call, Inc. via Getty Images)

Republicans blast Democrats’ Trump election meddling claims as hypocritical ‘conspiracy theory’

Senate Democrats accuse president of laying groundwork for 2026 election interference as GOP pushes SAVE America Act

    By Alex Miller
    Fox News

    Published February 6, 2026 12:20pm EST

Senate Democrats are accusing President Donald Trump of trying to meddle in the upcoming election cycle, and Senate Republicans are calling them out.

The topic of election integrity was again thrust back into the forefront by House Republicans last week, who demanded that voter ID legislation be included in a deal struck by Trump and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., to fund the government.

While that ultimately never came to fruition, the talking point and legislative push have remained.

THUNE REJECTS TRUMP’S CALL TO NATIONALIZE ELECTIONS, WARNS DEMS TRIED THE SAME

President Donald Trump speaks to reporters and members of the media at Mar-a-Lago on Feb. 1, 2026, in Palm Beach, Fla.(Al Drago/Getty Images)

Trump has called on Republicans to nationalize elections throughout the week; the FBI conducted a raid on an election hub in Fulton County, Ga. and a cohort from the Senate GOP are pushing for the SAVE America Act to get a shot in the upper chamber.

Senate Democrats see the moves as laying the groundwork for election interference during the 2026 midterm election cycle — a point that they railed against Trump and Republicans for years.

“I think as Trump gets more desperate, he’s looking at ways that he can rig the election anytime a Republican doesn’t win,” Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., told Fox News Digital. “He thinks it’s unfair, and so he wants to tilt the rules to make sure the Democrats don’t win.”

“So yeah, I think we ultimately have to be really vigilant about this,” he continued. “The Constitution is crystal clear, the federal government can’t run state elections, but that doesn’t mean he won’t try.”

REPUBLICANS, TRUMP RUN INTO SENATE ROADBLOCK ON VOTER ID BILL

Sen. Elissa Slotkin is seen during votes at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., on Oct. 23, 2025.(Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call, Inc. via Getty Images)

The accusation has made Senate Republicans balk, particularly after congressional Democrats raged against the GOP for questions of election integrity following the 2020 election and after Democrats pushed for their own, sweeping election reform packages under former President Joe Biden.

Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., told Fox News Digital that Democrats’ charge was “ridiculous.”

“Sounds like a conspiracy theory,” Schmitt said.

“I think President Trump cares very deeply about the integrity of our elections,” he continued. “If you ask the American people, they support voter ID by overwhelming numbers. So look, they’ve got some outrage of the week every week.”

Trump’s comments to nationalize elections came first during an interview with former FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino on his podcast, where the president said, “The Republicans should say, ‘We want to take over, we should take over the voting in at least many — 15 places.’”

Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., shot back that a Democratic politician didn’t need to weigh in on the issue because Trump “said it with his own mouth.”

“You can take the president at his own words and believe what he says,” Slotkin told Fox News Digital. “And he’s had an obsession with this issue, certainly an obsession with Fulton County, since he lost the 2020 election, and he’s now weaponizing the federal government because of his obsession.”

SCHUMER NUKES GOP PUSH FOR ‘JIM CROW-ERA’ VOTER ID LAWS IN TRUMP-BACKED SHUTDOWN PACKAGE

Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, wants House Republicans to push back against the Trump-backed government funding deal and demanded that it include DHS funding and his voter ID legislation.(Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call, Inc. via Getty Images)

But some Senate Republicans have pushed back on Trump’s desire to implement more federal control over elections.

They argue that it’s a request that runs headfirst into the Constitution, which dictates that elections are run at the state and local levels with little impact from the federal government. Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., has also thrown cold water on the notion.

“Distributed, decentralized elections held at state-level, in my view, are a protection against hacking and other things, so it’s a lot harder to hack 50 systems than it is one,” Thune said. “So, if that’s the issue, I’m a believer in keeping most of those administered — most issues, at least administered by the state. The issue of citizenship, when it comes to voting, would be an exception to that.”

And while there is a push to pass the SAVE America Act, which would include voter ID, proof of citizenship to register to vote, and other reforms, it’s unlikely to survive in the Senate.

That’s because of the 60-vote filibuster threshold and Senate Democrats’ near-unanimous disdain of the legislation, which Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has called “Jim Crow 2.0.”

Still, Sens. Mike Lee, R-Utah, Ron Johnson, R-Wis., and Rick Scott, R-Fla., the three most vocal supporters of the bill, met with Trump to discuss a path forward on Thursday.

“It is Democrats bending over backwards to prevent voter ID and proof of citizenship for American elections,” Lee told Fox News Digital in a statement. “It is Democrats demanding that nobody ask questions about election security and irregularities. The projection is jaw-dropping.”

Republicans warn Democrats’ ICE reform push is cover to defund border enforcement

Britt says billions from Trump’s ‘big, beautiful bill’ are ‘not up for negotiation’ as DHS shutdown deadline approaches

    By Alex Miller

[Noem reveals if ICE operations will continue as Homan pulls troops, Congress crawls out of shutdown]

In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, DHS Secretary Kristi Noem discussed her view on de-escalating ICE operations as unrest continues in cities across the U.S. and another potential government shutdown over DHS funding.

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

Senate Democrats are standing firm by their demands to rein in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), but Senate Republicans believe they have an ulterior motive: completely defund immigration operations across the country.

“I’m really concerned that all the Democrats want to do is defund ICE,” Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., told Fox News Digital, “They want open borders. They don’t want to get rid of criminals.”

Republicans argue the canary in the coal mine came last week when the Senate was advancing a Trump-backed funding deal.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., attempted to pass an amendment that would have stripped the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and ICE of $75 billion, which was summarily defeated on the floor.

[SWEEPING BILL TO CRUSH SANCTUARY CITIES, PROTECT ICE AGENTS UNVEILED IN SENATE]

“Every single Senate Democrat voted yes,” Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso, R-Wyo., said. “That’s how radical Democrats have become. The Senate rightly rejected this amendment. The Sanders Amendment exposes Democrats’ open borders goals.”

That money came from President Donald Trump’s marquee “big, beautiful bill,” which shoveled billions to DHS for immigration operations, ensuring the agency is flush with cash for the next three to four fiscal years, regardless of congressional Democrats’ desires to defund it.

Sen. Katie Britt, R-Ala., told Fox News Digital that the money from the “big, beautiful bill,” wasn’t going anywhere. Britt is leading talks for Senate Republicans over the issue.

“That’s not up for negotiation,” Britt said.

“Once again, just like they did in the last shutdown, they would be putting the American people in jeopardy and at a worse place as a result of trying to win on a political posturing or political issue,” she continued. “So look, I plan on going into this with good-faith intentions, and I certainly hope that they will as well.”

As the week has gone on, some Senate Republicans believed that all their counterparts wanted to do was gut ICE.

When asked if he believed that Democrats’ end goal was to completely defund immigration enforcement operations, Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., told Fox News Digital, “100%.”

“There’s no way we’re going to put handcuffs on ICE to limit what they can do,” Tuberville said.

Senate Democrats pushed back against the assertion that they wanted to gut the agency, arguing that because of the funding already established by the “big, beautiful bill,” there was little they could actually do to defund immigration operations.

“I want accountability,” Sen. Andy Kim, D-N.J., told Fox News Digital. “I want to make sure that there’s oversight. But right now, what I’m seeing is lawlessness and some of the actions and behaviors that should be alarming to all of us, and you know, that’s the underlying factor that we want to address.”

“It’s not about some game,” he continued.

Congressional Democrats coalesced around a list of 10 demands, finally unveiling their proposal late Wednesday night. It included several policies Republicans have already spurned, like de-masking ICE agents and requiring judicial warrants.

[THUNE BLASTS JEFFRIES, SCHUMER AS ‘AFRAID OF THEIR SHADOWS’ AS DHS FUNDING FIGHT HEATS UP]

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., balked at the new proposal, and said that “there’s just a bunch of stuff in there that’s a nonstarter.”

“They know that. Now maybe they had to put it in there to satisfy MoveOn.org, or some other special left-wing special interest groups,” Thune said. “But there are a few things that actually there’s probably some room to move on there to negotiate on, but a lot of that stuff, obviously just wasn’t serious.”

Republicans are also mulling turning to another short-term funding patch, given that as of Thursday, their last day in session, they had just eight days left on the clock before the current continuing resolution (CR) for DHS ran out.

[CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FOX NEWS APP]

But Democrats aren’t keen on supporting another extension — Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., warned that Thune and Republicans “shouldn’t count on our votes.”

He also pushed back against grumbling Republicans, arguing that negotiations wouldn’t move along unless Republicans revealed what they wanted in return.

“They have to get their act together,” he said. “We spent three days diligently, seriously coming up with a comprehensive, commonsense plan that police departments throughout the country use. Where are they?”

Kyle Wagner, 37, is facing federal threat and cyberstalking charges

    By Andrew Mark Miller
    Fox News

    Published February 6, 2026 11:57am EST

Federal authorities arrested a self-described Antifa member in Minnesota on Thursday morning after he racked up a significant social media following that the government says was used to obstruct federal law enforcement and threaten to kill ICE agents.

In a video obtained by Fox News Digital, Kyle Wagner, 37, of Minneapolis was arrested in the early morning hours wearing a sweatshirt that said, “I’M ANTIFA,” a reference to the far-left organization that the Trump administration has deemed a domestic terrorist group.

Wagner’s bald head and numerous tattoos, including “RESISTANCE” across his chest and a “three arrows” anti-fascist symbol on his neck, have made him a recognizable figure on anti-ICE social media feeds.

Wagner operated an Instagram account under the handle @kaos.follows, where he had amassed tens of thousands of followers before the account was deleted. In his bio, he reportedly used the hashtag #IronFront and described himself as an “entrepreneur.”

On that channel, the DOJ said Wagner had urged followers to confront and attack ICE officers, referred to agents as “murderers” and the “gestapo” and at times called for armed violence against them.

On Jan. 8, 2026, Wagner posted a video stating, “We’re f***ing coming for you,” directed at ICE agents and prosecutors allege he urged followers to “get your guns” to federal agents and suggested identifying agents even if it had to be done “at the barrel of a gun.”

It is unclear whether Wagner was employed or attended any schools in the area, but he has spoken of himself as a long-time fixture in the city, stating, “I’ve already bled for this city, I’ve already fought for this city.”

Fox News Digital previously reported that Wagner was on the run and removed his remaining social media accounts last week, while a Venmo account linked to donations was no longer accessible.

“I am basically on the run now. You know, I have safe places, and I have evacuations planned out, but, the way things are going, I’m going to have to be very resourceful, and that’s going to take support,” Wagner said. “As I’ve said a million times, I am going to stay in this fight to the bitter end. I’m not gonna run away, but I will need some help.”

Wagner acknowledged in a video posted in late January 2026 that he cannot legally possess a firearm, though he did not specify the legal reason for this restriction.

Following the fatal law enforcement shooting of Alex Pretti on Jan. 24, Wagner reportedly told followers he was “not talking about peaceful protests anymore” and urged them to “get your fing guns and stop these fing people.”

In a press release, the Department of Justice says Wagner is facing “federal threat and cyberstalking charges following alleged murder and assault threats against ICE.”

“This man allegedly doxxed and called for the murder of law enforcement officers, encouraged bloodshed in the streets, and proudly claimed affiliation with the terrorist organization Antifa before going on the run,” Attorney General Pamela Bondi said in the press release. “Today’s arrest illustrates that you cannot run, you cannot hide, and you cannot evade our federal agents: if you come for law enforcement, the Trump Administration will come for you.”
