IDF says Iran’s missiles exceeded range limits Tehran claimed it lacked | Fox News

    By [Benjamin Weinthal][Fox News]

    Published [March 21, 2026 6:07pm EDT]

The [Islamic Republic of Iran] significantly escalated its war effort against the U.S. with its launch of two intermediate-range ballistic missiles on Friday toward [Diego Garcia, a key U.S.-U.K.] military base in the Indian Ocean.

The targeting of Diego Garcia, roughly 2,500 miles from Iran, means Tehran’s missile capabilities appear to have exceeded previously acknowledged limits.

In the period leading up to Operation Epic Fury on Feb. 28, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi claimed that “We intentionally kept the range of our missiles below 2,000 km so we don’t have that capability. And we don’t want to do that because we do not have hostility against the United States people and all Europeans.”

On Saturday, Israel Defense Forces IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir said “Just yesterday, Iran launched a two-stage intercontinental ballistic missile with a range of 4,000 kilometers [2,500 miles] toward an American target on the island of Diego Garcia. These missiles were not intended to hit Israel. Their range reaches the [capitals of Europe] — Berlin, Paris and Rome are all within direct threat range.”

IDF spokesman Nadav Shoshani blasted the alleged Iranian deception on X: “Just 3 days before the war, the Iranian regime said they don’t obtain long-range missiles. Today, their lies were exposed once again, when missiles were fired 4000km away from Iran. They hoped to lie their way into becoming a force that can terrorize the world. We didn’t buy it.”

Jason Brodsky, the policy director of United Against Nuclear Iran(UANI), told Fox News Digital, “The Trump administration, in citing Iran’s missile threat as a rationale for Operation Epic Fury, was therefore justified in its decision to undertake military action as Iran has consistently refused to negotiate over its missile program. It also shows how dangerous it is to solely rely on Iranian nuclear weapons fatwas and the supreme leader’s public rhetoric in formulating U.S. policy. As long as Iran retains the technical capability beyond public pronouncements, it is a threat.”

According to Brodsky, “I think it’s a message that the IRGC is in charge in Iran after Supreme Leader [Ali Khamenei]’s death. When Khamenei was alive, he limited the range of Iran’s missile program to 2000 km. Khamenei recounted in 2018 how he had rejected overtures from IRGC commanders seeking to increase the range to as much as 5000 km.”

He continued, “But now that he has died, those voices in the IRGC seeking to increase the range are likely driving the agenda. The launch of the missiles was likely meant as a signal of the IRGC’s capabilities to threaten U.S. allies beyond the Middle East. For example, this threatens Europe.”

    Image 47: placeholder

The two long-range Iranian missiles did not hit the base, but the attempted attack marked a significant expansion of Iran’s reach beyond the Middle East and toward a major [U.S. strategic hub]. One missile reportedly failed in flight, while a U.S. warship launched an SM-3 interceptor at the other, officials said. It was not immediately clear whether the interception was successful. The remote base is a critical launch point for U.S. bombers, nuclear submarines and other strategic assets.

Ilan Berman, Vice President of the American Foreign Policy Council in Washington, D.C., told Fox News Digital, “The launch hammers home the president’s point about [Iran being an imminent threat]. It’s easy for casual observers to ignore, but the increasing maturity of Iran’s strategic programs, plural, has been exponentially expanding the threat that the Islamic Republic poses beyond the Middle East. That is what “Epic Fury” is seeking to address. The administration believes, absolutely correctly in my view, that these types of capabilities cannot be left in the hands of a radical, predatory regime.”

He continued that “Despite its public denials, it’s been clear that the Iranian regime has been working on expanding the range of its ballistic missile capabilities for years. The launch toward Diego Garcia confirms that it has made real progress toward that goal, and is already able to put targets in the same range as Central and Eastern Europe at risk. Moreover, it’s clear that the regime is seeking still greater capabilities – and that, if left intact, Iran’s ballistic missiles would attain intercontinental range soon.”

Berman, the author of “Iran’s Deadly Ambition: The Islamic Republic’s Quest for Global Power,” added, “The parallel development Iran has been carrying out on its [space program] is significant. The booster used to put payloads into orbit can be married onto a medium-range missile to create intercontinental range capabilities. Before the war, we were seeing a clear convergence of the regime’s strategic programs: its ballistic missile work, its space capabilities and its nuclear program.”

Luquin)

He warned about the serious Iranian threat to continental Europe. “Europe is absolutely at risk, as the recent launch makes clear. I wouldn’t say that a failure to recognize this to date has been due to a grand deception by Tehran, though. It is more attributable to willful blindness on the part of European elites about the extent of the threat that the Iranian regime poses, as well as undue faith in diplomacy and arms control in containing it,” he said.

On Saturday, the [United Kingdom] condemned the attack. “Iran’s reckless attacks, lashing out across the region and holding hostage the Strait of Hormuz, are a threat to British interests and British allies,” the U.K. Ministry of Defense said in a statement. “RAF jets and other U.K. military assets are continuing to defend our people and personnel in the region.”

Cuba suffers second nationwide power outage in less than a week – CBS News

    March 21, 2026 / 7:40 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Cuba on Saturday suffered its second nationwide power outage in less than a week, according to officials.

The Ministry of Energy and Mines said onXthat another “total disconnection of the National Electric System has occurred. Protocols for restoration are already beginning to be implemented.”

On Monday, officials in Cuba reported an island-wide blackout that affected some 11 million people. Humanitarian organizations began delivering aid to Cuba by air Friday, including solar panels, food and medicine. Saturday’s outage was the fourth major blackout in Cuba over the past four months.

Protests have been reported in Cuba in the past week as frustration grows over prolonged blackouts and worsening living conditions across the island,CBS Miami reported.

As its energy and economic crises deepen, the country is blaming the problems on a U.S. energy blockade after President Trump in Januarywarned of tariffson any country that sells or provides oil to it.

Cuba has relied heavily on foreign assistance and oil shipments from allies like Mexico, Russia and Venezuela. But critical oil shipments from Venezuela were halted after the U.S. attacked the South American country in early January andarrested its then-president, Nicolás Maduro.

Mr. Trump has for months suggested Cuba’s government is on the verge of collapse, saying that top Cuban leaders would be smart to avoid the fate of Maduro. After Cuba’s electric grid collapsed earlier this week, Mr. Trump told reporters he believed he’d soon have “the honor of taking Cuba.”

“Taking Cuba in some form…whether I free it, take it, I think I can do anything I want with it, if you want to know the truth,” Mr. Trump said. “They’re a very weakened nation right now.”

In a post to X on Tuesday, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez wrote: “In the face of the worst scenario, Cuba is accompanied by a certainty: any external aggressor will clash with an impregnable resistance.”

‘Good, I’m glad he’s dead’: Trump’s insensitive comments about the dead hit a new level

    Donald Trump US elections

For years, President Donald Trump has offered crass and insensitive comments about people who died — especially his foes.

But on Saturday, he explicitly celebrated the death of former FBI Director Robert Mueller, writing, “Good, I’m glad he’s dead.”

As a special counsel, Mueller probed Trump and his 2016 campaign as the leader of the Russia investigation during the president’s first term.

“Robert Mueller just died,” Trump posted on social media shortly after the death was first reported. “Good, I’m glad he’s dead. He can no longer hurt innocent people!”

While it was the culmination of a yearslong series of such comments by Trump, it was hardly an isolated incident.

In 2017, one of the first big controversies of Trump’s first term was his insensitive alleged comments to the widow of a soldier who had just died. Trump was accused of telling the widow that her husband “knew what he signed up for.” And while Trump claimed it had been a “very respectful conversation,” the White House eventually seemed to tacitly confirm the comments.

After John McCain died in August 2018, Trump in early 2019 resumed his yearslong attacks on the former Arizona senator. He criticized the Republican for killing Trump’s health care law, saying, “I never was a fan of John McCain, and I never will be.” Trump also falsely claimed the recently deceased had graduated “last in his class” and falsely accused him of sharing the “Steele dossier” with the FBI before the 2016 election.

In late 2019, Trump attacked another legislative foe who died that year — longtime Rep. John Dingell — by suggesting the Michigan Democrat was “looking up” from hell.

Dingell’s widow, Democratic Rep. Debbie Dingell of Michigan, responded: “I’m preparing for the first holiday season without the man I love. You brought me down in a way you can never imagine and your hurtful words just made my healing much harder.”

By 2021, Trump’s jabs at the deceased became more instantaneous. About 24 hours after former Secretary of State Colin Powell died, Trump released a statement criticizing his “big mistakes on Iraq” and calling him a “classic RINO” who was always “the first to attack other Republicans.”

(Powell had openly criticized Trump and crossed party lines to vote against him in 2016 and 2020.)

And Trump’s tendency has really ramped up in recent months.

In December, he reposted a series of attacks on the Kennedy family just hours after John F. Kennedy’s granddaughter, environmental journalist Tatiana Schlossberg, died following a terminal brain cancer diagnosis.

That came just a couple of weeks after arguably Trump’s most insensitive comments about a deceased critic. And this wasn’t just someone who had recently died, mind you, but someone who had been brutally murdered.

Shortly after the killing of director Rob Reiner and his wife, Trump suggested Reiner had died from “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”

“He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights” recently, Trump added.

A number of Republicans criticized Trump’s post.

But just three months later, here is Trump again.

Except this time, he’s not just saying crass things about someone who died, but rather explicitly celebrating their demise.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Friday urged a judge to dissolve the injunction that keeps the Trump administration from detaining Kilmar Abrego Garcia again so he can quickly be deported to Liberia.

“Dissolution is also warranted because the Court’s Memorandum Order failed to acknowledge that the Court’s own prior injunction against removal is the sole impediment to Petitioner’s prompt removal,” the DOJ wrote in a court filing obtained by Fox News Digital. “The Court cannot both impose the impediment that delays removal and consequently prolongs detention and, at the same time, hold that the resulting detention is impermissibly prolonged.”

It added, “Any attempt by this Court to permanently enjoin the government from exercising its authority to remove the Petitioner from this country is in direct contradiction to established judicial norms, and a clear error of law.”

The administration deported Abrego Garcia, who they claim is a member of MS-13, a year ago to a prison in his native El Salvador, but he was returned to the U.S. in June to face human smuggling charges in Tennessee related to a 2022 traffic stop despite at first saying the administration had no power to bring him back.

His Lawyers deny he is a member of MS-13.

He was released from detention in December on the grounds that the Trump administration had not obtained the final notice of removal order that is needed to deport him to a third country.

Abrego Garcia, 31, has become a flash point in the national immigration debate since last March, when he was deported to El Salvador in violation of a 2019 court order in what Trump administration officials acknowledged was an “administrative error.”

The Supreme Court later ruled that the administration had to work to bring him back to the U.S.

[JUDGE ORDERS MIGRANT DEPORTED IN ‘ERROR’ FREE FROM ICE CUSTODY WITH CRIMINAL CASE LOOMING]

He has pleaded not guilty on the human smuggling charges and is seeking dismissal of the charges on the grounds of vindictive and selective prosecution.

The 2019 court order prevents Abrego Garcia from being deported to El Salvador after an immigration judge determined he faced danger from a gang that had threatened his family. He immigrated to the U.S. illegally as a teenager and has been under the supervision of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Last month, U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis agreed to convert her previous emergency order blocking ICE from immediately re-detaining Abrego Garcia into a longer-term form of injunctive relief sought by his lawyers.

She said that the Trump administration failed to provide the court with any “good reason to believe” that they plan to remove Abrego Garcia to a third country in the “reasonably foreseeable future.” Instead, she said, they “made one empty threat after another to remove him to countries in Africa with no real chance of success.”

Abrego Garcia has said he’s willing to be sent to Costa Rica, but Acting Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Director Todd Lyons said he will instead be removed to Liberia.

Abrego Garcia’s attorney said in December Abrego was willing to leave for Costa Rica immediately, and that the country had given him asylum status months ago.

The government’s “persistent refusal to acknowledge Costa Rica as a viable removal option, their threats to send Abrego Garcia to African countries that never agreed to take him, and their misrepresentation to the Court that Liberia is now the only country available to Abrego Garcia, all reflect that whatever purpose was behind his detention, it was not for the ‘basic purpose’ of timely third-country removal,” Xinis said in December.

The administration asked the judge to rule on its request to have the injunction dissolved by April 17.

Iran launched missiles at US-UK military base in the Indian Ocean. Here’s what that says about its capabilities

    PUBLISHED Mar 21, 2026, 6:22 PM ET / CNN

Iran’s attempt to strike a US-UK base over 2,000 miles (over 3,000 kilometers) off its coast has renewed questions about Tehran’s military capabilities and how far its missiles can reach.

On Friday morning local time, Iran launched two intermediate-range ballistic missiles at Diego Garcia, a joint US-UK military base in the Indian Ocean, a US official told CNN, adding that neither of them struck the base. This marks what appears to be the first known attempt to target the base, which was deliberately built in a remote location beyond the reach of many adversaries.

While the attack was unsuccessful, it shows that Iran may not be adhering its self-imposed missile range limit of 2,000 kilometers, raising concerns about whether Tehran could hit US and European interests farther away than previously thought.

Jeffrey Lewis, distinguished scholar of global security at Middlebury College, told CNN that Iran was developing an intercontinental ballistic missile that was “reoriented to space launch” after then-Supreme Leader Ali Hosseini Khamenei “imposed a 2,000-kilometer range limit” in 2017.

“They were waiting for Khamenei to change his mind or, well, die,” Lewis said. “Now he’s dead.”

Trita Parsi, the co-founder of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, believes the US homeland is safe from Iranian strikes, but he told CNN that the attempted attack “suggests that other bases that the US thought is outside of the range of Iran may actually be within the range,” along with American ships “that have been kept 3,000 kilometers away.”

Parsi also wonders whether this incident could cause some European countries that have allowed the US to use its military bases to reconsider.

Earlier this month, the UK agreed to a US request to allow American forces to use its military bases for operations against Iranian missile sites. Meanwhile, Romania has allowed US refueling planes, as well as US surveillance and satellite equipment, to be at its bases, according to Reuters.

“It does put certain European bases in within their range,” Parsi said, adding, “I don’t know if that’s going to cause a rethink on the European side but it definitely increases the risk for them.”

President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed, including in his first comments after the US struck Iran late last month, that Tehran has been building missiles that “could soon reach the American homeland.”

However, an unclassified assessment from the Defense Intelligence Agency from 2025 said that Iran could develop a “militarily-viable” intercontinental ballistic missile by 2035 “should Tehran decide to pursue the capability.”

Sources also told CNN late last month that there was no intelligence to suggest that Iran is pursuing an intercontinental ballistic missile program to hit the US at this time.

Parsi said the unsuccessful strike on Diego Garcia raises “question marks whether (Iran) may also have other types of weapons that we did not believe that they have that they might be using.”

Iran has several missiles with a range of 2,000 kilometers, including the Sejjil and Khorramshahr weapons, along with the long-range Soumar cruise missile that has a range of up to 3,000 kilometers, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies,

Sam Lair, research associate at the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies, told CNN that Iran’s “space launch vehicles, including the (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’) solid-propellant Ghaem-100, could clearly reach longer ranges than their regional missile force if they were used ballistically rather than as a space launch vehicle.”

“People often forget space launch is fundamentally the same technology as ballistic missiles,” he continued.

Lair also said the Iranians perhaps extended the range of a missile with lighter explosive material.

“Maybe a khorramshahr with a very small payload, like too small to do anything,” Lair said.

Meanwhile, Parsi questioned whether Iran has the “targeting intelligence” and missile accuracy to successfully strike farther targets.

“There’s large parts of that area, not Diego Garcia itself, in which the Iranians don’t have the ability to generate their own targeting intelligence because they don’t have eyes there essentially through their satellites, etc.,” Parsi said. “So that intelligence is most likely coming from the Russians and the Chinese, and this is another one of those elements of this war that apparently the administration is taken by surprise by.”

CNN reported earlier this month that Russia is providing Iran with intelligence about the locations and movements of American troops, ships and aircraft, according to multiple people familiar with US intelligence reporting on the issue.

Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images)

Bill Clark/CQ-Roll Call, Inc via Getty Images)

Aaron Schwartz/Bloomberg via Getty Images)

Dems block GOP amendment tying voter ID bill to transgender sports ban

Published March 21, 2026 1:55pm EDT / By Alex Miller, Fox News

Senate Democrats blocked a move by Senate Republicans to modify a Trump-backed voter ID bill with a provision that would halt men in women’s sports.

The amendment to the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act from Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., was one of several tweaks to the legislation requested by President Donald Trump.

Tuberville’s amendment could have codified Trump’s earlier executive order from last year to ban transgender women from participating in women’s sports — a culture war flashpoint between Republicans and Democrats that, unless turned into law, will likely be reversed should a Democratic administration take over in 2028.

GOP SENATOR’S GAMBIT EXPOSES FALSE DEM CLAIMS ABOUT SUPPORTING VOTER ID

U.S. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) speaks to reporters as he returns to his office at the U.S. Capitol on February 10, 2026 in Washington, DC(Kevin Dietsch/Getty Images)

But, as expected, the add-on failed on a party-line vote in the upper chamber.

The amendment was the first of several expected to hit the floor as Republicans continue their takeover strategy to debate the bill. Saturday marked the fifth day that the SAVE America Act dominated the floor.

“I would do whatever it took to get this passed,” Tuberville told Fox News Digital. “This is probably one of the most important bills that’s come through here in a long, long time. It’s just pitting Americans versus non-Americans.”

THUNE ACCUSES CRITICS OF ‘CREATING FALSE EXPECTATIONS’ AMID BACKLASH OVER STALLED SAVE AMERICA ACT

Others on the docket include a ban on transgender surgeries on minors and halting unsolicited mail-in ballots — add-ons that Trump requested Republicans tack onto the voter ID and citizen verification bill.

And the ongoing floor takeover likely won’t result in the SAVE America Act passing, given that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Senate Democrats are unified in their rejection of the legislation.

“So I’m like, President Trump, we need to get it done,” he continued. “But I don’t know whether we’ve got enough support, even on the Republican side, much less Democrats.”

REPUBLICANS SIGNAL NO RETREAT ON SAVE ACT AS MARATHON SENATE DEBATE KICKS OFF

The unlimited debate on the legislation is meant to mimic the talking filibuster, a strategy that would lower the threshold to pass the legislation to a simple 50-vote majority at the cost of deadlocking the Senate floor.

And Senate Democrats would be able to offer an unlimited number of amendments that could drastically change the bill, which Republicans have acknowledged they don’t have the numbers to block.

The floor takeover they’re currently undertaking is largely meant to shift blame from Republicans to Schumer and Democrats for the bill’s expected failure, given that, in order to pass conventionally, the GOP would need 60 votes.

But others hope, like Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, who is the lead sponsor of the SAVE America Act in the Senate, that the constant debate will grind down Democratic resistance and flip some over to support the bill.

Two skiers died and five others were injured on Saturday when an avalanche rumbled down on them in the Italian Alps, in the Trentino-Alto Adige region, the mountain rescue service said.
