NASA

NASA

NASA

James Blair/NASA via AP

NASA表示, extensive testing and analyses showed the cause was related to the capsule’s so-called “skip” reentry trajectory that subjected the heat shield to alternating temperature extremes.

Artemis II astronauts still awed by moonshot experience: “It was otherworldly”

    April 16, 2026 / 5:43 PM EDT / CBS News

Nearly a week back from a voyage around the moon, the four Artemis II astronauts described an almost mystical experience flying over the normally unseen lunar far side, awed by their views of Earth a quarter of a million miles away and equally stunned watching a solar eclipse, they told reporters Thursday.

“I want to thank the world for tuning in for a second and getting hooked on this mission,” commander Reid Wiseman said. “When we came home, we were shocked at the global outpouring of support, of pride, of ownership of this mission.”

“And really, that’s what the four of us wanted. We wanted to go out and try to do something that would bring the world together, to unite the world,” he said. “I will just wrap that all up with the astronaut’s creed, always launch as friends and land as friends.”

Wiseman said the Artemis II crew launched as friends and landed as best friends.

The astronauts blasted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida on April 1. Nine days later, the Orion capsule splashed down in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of San Diego, an epic ending to their historic mission.

Asked Thursday what was the most memorable event during a flight that carried them farther from Earth than any other humans and gave the crew a close-up look at the moon’s far side, Wiseman said he and his crewmates — pilot Victor Glover and mission specialists Christina Koch and Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen — had not yet had time to fully process the experience.

But it was powerful enough for him to ask the chaplain aboard the Navy recovery ship after splashdown in the Pacific Ocean to pay the crew a visit.

“I am not really a religious person, but there was no other avenue for me to explain anything or to experience anything, so I asked for the chaplain on the Navy ship to come visit us for a minute. I had never met him before in my life, but I saw the cross on his collar and I broke down in tears. It’s very hard to fully grasp what we just went through,” Wiseman said.

Since splashing down off the Southern California coast on Friday, the crew has been subjected to “medical testing, physical testing, doctors, science objectives,” Wiseman said. “We have not had that decompression. We have not had that reflection time.”

But the event he mentioned as one of the most memorable to him was viewing a solar eclipse in deep space when the moon moved between the Orion crew ship and the sun, producing a ghostly glow all the way around the lunar horizon.

“When the sun eclipsed behind the moon, I turned to Victor and I said I don’t think humanity has evolved to the point of being able to comprehend what we’re looking at right now. It was otherworldly, it was amazing,” he said.

Along with close-up views of the normally unseen far side of the moon, the astronauts also got a chance to take in a total eclipse of the sun. NASA

Wiseman and his crewmates launched flew around the moon on April 6 and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean on April 10 to close out a voyage spanning nearly 700,000 miles.

For Hansen, the first Canadian to venture beyond low-Earth orbit, one of the more memorable aspects of flying in deep space was the three-dimensional appearance of the starry void, the moon and the Earth suspended in space close by.

“What kept grabbing my attention when the lighting was right and we were looking out the window is that I kept seeing this, like, depth to, I guess, the galaxy,” he said. “It’s not that I could tell which stars were really closer and farther… but because of how bright they are and their differences, they look like you can tell where they are in 3D.”

“That was mind-blowing for me, and then you see the same thing with the moon and the Earth,” he said. “You’re viewing them from this new perspective with like three-dimensional depth. I’ve heard Christina talk about this a lot. We’re all kind of struck by these things that make us feel small, and that’s the sense I had.”

Shortly after leaving Earth orbit and heading for the moon, the Artemis II astronauts captured this stunning nighttime view of Earth. NASA

At the same time, Hansen said, he experienced “this very powerful feeling as a human being, like as a group. I saw it in all these sights over and over again. I kept seeing that same thing and (having) that same feeling.”

The Artemis II mission, NASA’s first piloted voyage to the moon since the last Apollo landing in 1972, was primarily a test flight of the agency’s Orion spacecraft, designed to carry astronauts to and from the moon, and an opportunity for flight controllers to hone their skills managing upcoming lunar landing missions.

After multiple delays, the astronauts were launched aboard an Orion capsule atop a Space Launch System rocket that put them into an elliptical orbit with a high point of more than 44,000 miles. They were the first to ride into space atop an SLS rocket, the most powerful operational booster in the world, and the first crew to fly in an Orion capsule.

It took 24 hours for the crew to complete one trip around the world in that highly elliptical orbit, giving them a full day to thoroughly test their Orion capsule’s life support, navigation and propulsion systems to make sure the ship was operating as required.

Then, as they reached the low point of the orbit at an altitude of just 115 miles, they fired the Orion’s service module engine for six minutes to break away from Earth and head for the moon.

The “free-return” trajectory was designed to carry the astronauts around the far side of the moon, using lunar gravity to bend their path back toward Earth without the need for any major thruster firings.

Four days after the trans-lunar injection engine firing, Wiseman and his crewmates reached a point in space 248,655 miles from Earth, the previous record for the farthest any human has flown into deep space.

A spectacular view of the Earth setting behind the moon from the perspective of the Artemis II astronauts. NASA

That record was set in 1970 by the crew of Apollo 13 while making an emergency return to Earth. Shortly after passing behind the moon and out of contact with Earth, the Artemis II crew set their own record, reaching a distance of 252,756 miles before looping back toward Earth.

While flying some 4,000 miles above the moon’s far side, the astronauts were able to photograph and see with their own eyes a large swathe of the normally unseen terrain.

The crew was out of touch with mission control for 40 minutes. Ten minutes after regaining radio contact, they were able to witness an hour-long solar eclipse.

From there, the astronauts headed home, slamming back into the atmosphere above the Pacific Ocean at a velocity of more than 24,000 mph. Thirteen minutes later, after their heat shield endured reentry temperatures of some 5,000 degrees, the spacecraft safely splashed down.

During an unpiloted test flight in 2022, an Orion capsule’s heat shield suffered unexpected damage. NASA said extensive testing and analyses showed the cause was related to the capsule’s so-called “skip” reentry trajectory that subjected the heat shield to alternating temperature extremes.

A different trajectory was used for the Artemis II reentry, and NASA officials said there were no obvious signs of any major damage. But engineers will not get a chance to thoroughly inspect the shield until after the Orion capsule is trucked back to the Kennedy Space Center.

From the crew’s perspective, their heat shield did just fine.

“We came in fast, and we came in hot, and I will tell you, that whole way in it was a smooth ride,” Wiseman said. “It was a very smooth ride.”

He said both he and Glover noticed a “touch of char loss” during the descent, referring to small bits of the heat shield’s outer layer coming off and flying past the cockpit windows.

But all four crew members looked underneath the capsule after it was hauled inside the recovery ship and “it looked wonderful to us,” Wiseman said. “It looked great, and that ride in was really amazing.”

All four astronauts, none the worse for nine days in weightlessness, flew back to their homes in Houston the day after splashdown, landing at Ellington Field near the Johnson Space Center on Saturday afternoon to cheers and applause from family members and hundreds of space center workers who gathered to welcome them home.

Dozens of safety violations found at Tennessee munitions factory after last year’s deadly explosion

    April 16, 2026 / 6:22 PM EDT / CBS News
    By Nicole Valdes

A munitions company that handles explosives for the U.S. military is facing a fine of over $3 million after Tennessee investigators found dozens of safety violations at the company’s facility where an explosion killed 16 people last year.

The Oct. 10 explosion destroyed Building 602 at Accurate Energetic Systems’ facility in McEwen, Tennessee, killing all 16 employees inside. According to investigators, employees in that building were working a supply chain that handled “melt cast explosives.”

A 122-page inspection shared with CBS News details more than 100 safety violations, with at least 44 described as “willful-serious.”

Among the violations, officials with the Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration said they found evidence that Accurate Energetic Systems had not taken adequate precautions to prevent the ignition of flammable vapors being handled at the facility. The agency said the company also failed to maintain required safety information for its hazardous equipment and demonstrated plain indifference to employee safety.

“AES, despite clear knowledge of the industry standards and recognized explosion hazards in Building 602, continued operations with excessive personnel, unnecessary occupancy, and explosive quantities far beyond the minimum needed for safe and efficient operations,” investigators said in their report.

“AES demonstrated plain indifference to employee safety by failing to limit personnel present, duration of employee exposure, and amount of explosive material present during operations in Building 602 that exposed employees to known explosion, fire, and blast hazards,” the investigators said. “AES increased limits including the net explosive weight, personnel, and transient limits for Building 602 without documented basis demonstrating intentional disregard for industry standards.”

    Murat Usubali/Anadolu via Getty Images

The 16 victims were identified as: Jason Adams, Erick Anderson, Billy Baker, Adam Boatman, Christopher Clark, Mindy Clifton, James Cook, Reyna Gillahan, LaTeisha Mays, Jeremy Moore, Melinda Rainey, Melissa Stanford, Trenton Stewart, Rachel Woodall, Steven Wright and Donald Yowell.

In a statement to CBS News, Accurate Energetic Systems CEO Wendell Stinson disputed the state’s findings.

“We believe that TOSHA’s findings do not represent the standard of safety we strive to achieve every day, nor our commitment to the wellbeing of our team members and their loved ones,” Stinson said.

He said the company was investigating the explosion and assisting government investigators.

“Those we lost embodied the very heart of our community,” Stinson said. “They were our friends and family, and we suffer from their loss. We miss them, love them, and will always cherish our memories of them.”

Attorney Darren Richie, who is representing the families of Reyna Gillahan and Steven Wright, said, “Every aspect of this is egregious.”

His firm alleges the explosion was not unforeseeable and notes that the $3.13 million penalty from the state Occupational Safety and Health Administration is the largest in Tennessee history.

“This company took a $120 million Department of Defense contract in 2025,” Richie said. “I believe that these folks knew exactly what they were doing, and they were fine sacrificing their employees’ lives for that $120 million contract.”

Richie provided CBS News with a draft of two wrongful death lawsuits his firm plans to file later this month in federal court on behalf of the Gillahan and Wright families.

Earlier this week, each family demanded $150 million from Accurate Energetic Systems in a prelitigation settlement offer. A company spokesperson declined to comment on the potential litigation to CBS News.

“What we can say is that the families of the victims of this tragedy have been our focal point since October 10,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

Richie said the company rejected the settlement demand and argued the state’s workers’ compensation program is the exclusive remedy for any injury in the workplace. Richie alleged the company also refused to provide insurance information to families.

“To date, the conduct of AES to show their gratitude to the families and support to the families consists of three items: They had a barbecue food truck at an event for the families, they sent a T-shirt with the deceased loved one’s picture on it to the families and a $50 gift card to Walmart. Needless to say, that’s insulting,” Richie said.

Stinson said the company has been providing long-term care and resources through a support fund and the nonprofit health system Centerstone.

“With the assistance of the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee, Helping Hands of Hickman/Humphreys County, Centerstone, and thousands of people within our community and from across the country, we have provided financial relief, grief and ongoing counseling, regular food deliveries, access to professional services and consulting, and recurring everyday needs among a host of other support measures,” the company spokesperson told CBS News. “We continue to be devastated for their losses.”

The head of U.S. Space Command said the U.S. is “very concerned” that Russia may be developing a nuclear weapon in space to target satellites, warning such a move could disrupt global communications, GPS systems and daily life on Earth.

Gen. Stephen N. Whiting, the commander of U.S. Space Command, made the remarks during an appearance on The General & The Journalist, a weekly podcast by The Times.

“Russia remains a very historic and sophisticated space power. Yes, they have been hurt by economic sanctions, but they continue to invest in counter-space weapons, with the most concerning reports being that they are potentially thinking about placing on orbit a nuclear ASAT weapon,” he added. “That would violate the Outer Space Treaty that they’re a party to, and it would hold at risk everyone’s satellites in low Earth orbit, and that would be an outcome that we just couldn’t tolerate.”

Whiting noted that space is considered a global commons, with the 1967 Outer Space Treaty — signed by nearly every nation, including all major space powers — prohibiting claims of sovereignty.

He said that differs from earlier eras when explorers would plant flags to claim land for a king or country.

Whiting stopped short of confirming the underlying intelligence, but emphasized the seriousness of the concern.

“I won’t speak about our intelligence sources and methods, but obviously it’s a report that we’re very concerned about,” he said.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the Pentagon for further comment on the matter.

A nuclear detonation in low Earth orbit — which spans roughly 100 to 1,200 miles above Earth — could have devastating consequences for both military and civilian infrastructure, according to Whiting.

“All of low Earth orbit would be at risk, and you know, that’s over 10,000 satellites today with these new proliferated low earth orbit constellations like Starlink,” he said.

Such an event could cripple satellite networks that underpin GPS, communications, financial systems and global internet access.

Whiting noted that most people do not realize how dependent modern life is on space-based systems.

“The average citizen around the world probably doesn’t think about how space enables their life every day, but if they carry a smartphone in their pocket, they are leveraging space multiple times a day,” he said.

He suggested Russia may view space-based attacks as a way to offset what it sees as U.S. and NATO advantages in conventional warfare.

“From a Russian perspective, they look at the United States, they look at NATO and they see a conventional overmatch there of conventional arms,” Whiting said. “They believe that novel ways of trying to undermine the United States and NATO, such as by neutralizing our space capabilities, helps them to level the battlefield.”

Whiting also pointed to ongoing Russian activity targeting satellite systems, including widespread interference in Europe.

‘THEY WERE SPYING’: SULLIVAN SOUNDS ALARM ON JOINT RUSSIA-CHINA MOVES IN US ARCTIC ZONE

“Clearly across Europe, we have seen sustained satellite communication jamming and GPS jamming,” he said.

He warned that such actions are already having real-world consequences, particularly for civilian aviation.

“The real problem with that GPS jamming, for example, is it’s being done in a way that’s affecting civil aviation in Eastern Europe and across Southern Europe,” Whiting said.

“When we put at risk civilian airliners full of citizens just trying to go on business or holiday, that’s incredibly problematic,” he added. “We do not want to see this normalization of trying to interfere with other satellites.”

RFK Jr. defends proposed 12% health budget cut, measles response in House testimony

    April 16, 2026 / 6:58 PM EDT / AP

Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Thursday faced federal lawmakers for the first time since September as he sought to defend a more than 12% proposed cut to his department’s budget and dodge arrows from angry Democrats along the way.

In his testimony before the House Ways and Means Committee, kicking off an expected sprint of seven budget hearings he’ll attend across congressional committees and subcommittees over the next week, Kennedy emphasized the administration’s work to reform dietary guidelines and crack down on waste, fraud and abuse.

Republicans on the committee praised Kennedy as a “breath of fresh air” and asked him to promote his department’s recent actions. Democrats, who have been furious over Kennedy’s sweeping overhaul of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, largely had a different agenda.

They needled Kennedy on what they viewed as the Trump administration’s hypocrisy on fraud, demanded to know why he was cutting budgets for various programs and slammed his efforts to pull back vaccine recommendations and messaging, which they said have caused unnecessary deaths.

Kennedy fired back, often raising his voice as he accused the Democrats of misrepresenting his work and past statements.

Here are three standout moments from Thursday’s hearing.

    A standoff over measles

One heated exchange early in the hearing came between Kennedy and Rep. Linda Sanchez. The California Democrat decried recent measles outbreaks across the U.S. and asked Kennedy to answer for the fact that under his leadership, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention pulled back public health messaging supporting vaccination.

“As a mother, this horrifies me,” Sanchez said. “Did President Trump approve your decision to end CDC’s pro-vaccine public messaging campaign?”

Kennedy repeatedly refused to answer, saying first he wanted to respond to the “misstatements that you’ve made” and later praising the Trump administration’s record on preventing measles, although protections against the disease have eroded in some parts of the country as vaccination rates have dropped.

“That’s not answering my question,” Sanchez said as the two talked over each other.

But Sanchez also got Kennedy, a longtime anti-vaccine activist before he entered politics, to acknowledge that a 6-year-old who died of measles last year in West Texas could have potentially been saved with vaccination.

“Do you agree with the majority of doctors that the measles vaccine could have saved that child’s life in Texas?” she asked.

    “It’s possible, certainly,” Kennedy said.

RFK Jr. denies talking about Black children being “re-parented”

A fight erupted between Kennedy and Rep. Terri Sewell, a Democrat from Alabama, when Kennedy vehemently denied making remarks he’d said in 2024.

The comments dated back to when Kennedy was a presidential candidate. On the “High Level Conversations” podcast last July, he said, “Psychiatric drugs — which every Black kid is now just standard put on Adderall, SSRIs, benzos, which are known to induce violence, and those kids are going to have a chance to go somewhere and get re-parented to live in a community where there’ll be no cellphones, no screens, you’ll actually have to talk to people.”

“Have you ever re-parented, or parented, I should say, a Black child?” Sewell asked, as her staff held up a poster featuring an abbreviated version of the quote.

“I don’t even know what that phrase means,” Kennedy said. “I’m not going to answer something I didn’t say.”

“You’re making stuff up,” he later claimed.

A recording of the podcast shows he made the comments during a conversation about free rehabilitation facilities he was proposing opening at the time in rural areas around the country.

HHS spokesperson Emily Hilliard said Kennedy before joining the administration was referring to spaces where young people facing alienation, mental health challenges and despair could get re-parented, which she said was a psychotherapy term for “developing the emotional regulation, discipline, boundaries, and self-worth that may not have been established in childhood.”

    Heated exchanges with Democrats

Kennedy spent most of his life as a Democrat, the scion of one of the nation’s most famous political families. Both Republicans and Democrats during the hearing began their remarks by expressing their admiration of Kennedy’s relatives, among them former President John F. Kennedy.

But again and again throughout Thursday’s hearing, the fraying of bonds between Kennedy and his former party was on full display as spiteful comments were passed back and forth.

The health secretary grew defensive and visibly agitated. He repeatedly criticized Democratic lawmakers for not giving him a word in edgewise.

“They’ve all shut me up,” Kennedy said at one point. “They give a little speech that they can go and market, you know, for fundraising, and they don’t allow me to answer the question.”

On a few rare occasions, the exchanges were civil. One representative, Gwen Moore of Wisconsin, used humor to make that happen.

“I promise to give you easy, comfortable questions if you don’t yell at me and hurt my feelings,” she told Kennedy. He promised he wouldn’t.

    • Summary
    • Companies
    • FAA caps O’Hare flights at 2,708 daily, checking United–American capacity race
    • American Airlines backs cap, says it preserves competition and reliability
    • Limits based on 2025 schedules; penalties up to $75,000 per excess flight

CHICAGO, April 16 (Reuters) – The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration on Thursday capped summer flights at Chicago O’Hare, stepping into an escalating battle between United Airlines and American Airlines after a surge in schedules threatened to overwhelm the airport.

The agency will limit O’Hare to 2,708 arrivals and departures a day from May 17 through October 24, forcing carriers to scale back plans and effectively holding operations near last year’s levels to avoid a repeat of widespread delays.

The move draws a regulatory line under a capacity race between the two carriers at one of the country’s most important hubs, underscoring the limits of growth at airports facing infrastructure constraints.

    COMPETITION CHECKED

The FAA said O’Hare’s overscheduling reflected competitive scheduling dynamics between the airport’s two largest carriers and rejected calls to use newer summer 2026 schedules as the baseline, saying that could encourage airlines to file unrealistic schedules to improve their negotiating posture.

United and American have both been expanding in Chicago, as they compete for market share at one of the country’s most important hubs.

Published schedules for peak summer 2026 days had climbed above 3,080 daily operations — nearly 15% higher than a year earlier — even as construction and other constraints persist, the FAA said.

Last summer’s performance showed the risks. Only about 56% of departures and 58% of arrivals operated on time as congestion and construction slowed traffic.

    DELAYS FORCE INTERVENTION

Rather than allow airlines to test those limits again, regulators intervened early, setting a cap they said would prevent delays from worsening.

“If you book a ticket, we want you and your family to have the certainty that you’ll fly without endless delays and cancellations,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.

United said it was reviewing the order and would outline next steps once that review is complete.

American said it supports the move, calling it a way to preserve “sensible competition” while minimizing disruptions during the busy summer season. The carrier said it had secured enough flights under the FAA’s plan to run a successful hub at O’Hare and meet its strategic goals, adding the limits would help improve reliability and reduce delays for travelers.

The reductions will be allocated based on airlines’ approved summer 2025 schedules, curbing more recent growth plans and limiting the ability of carriers to gain share through last-minute additions.

The restrictions are intended as a temporary measure tied to construction and are set to expire at the end of the summer travel season.

Airlines that breach the cap could face penalties of up to $75,000 per flight.

Tennessee governor signs nuclear family month resolution as critics push back on exclusions

The signing comes days after the Pride flag at Stonewall National Monument was restored after a legal battle

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee outlines school choice, voucher program proposal gaining momentum in state legislature

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, a Republican, spoke with Fox News Digital about his school choice proposal advancing in the state legislature as parental rights remain a key 2024 election issue.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee has signed a resolution declaring June as “Nuclear Family Month,” as an alternative to the usual LGBTQ+ Pride Month.

Lee, a Republican, signed House Joint Resolution 182 on April 9 after it passed the House in April 2025 and the Senate last month.

The legislation highlights the importance of celebrating the traditional family unit, described as “consisting of one husband, one wife, and any biological, adopted, or fostered children.”

“The nuclear family is under attack in our beloved State and nation, and it is our responsibility to uplift, protect, and support values that help Tennessee prosper,” the resolution further provides as an explanation for the celebration.

A spokesperson for the governor did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

LGBTQ+ advocacy groups have begun to speak out against the resolution, with a representative for GLAAD telling Fox News Digital its opinion on the bill.

“The strongest families are grounded in love, not legislative definitions. It is disturbing to see lawmakers use their platform to intentionally exclude their own constituents,” the organization wrote in a statement.

“Instead of drafting resolutions that aim to divide Tennessee families, Gov. Lee should be focused on building a state where every family is treated fairly and every child has the opportunity to succeed.”

The news of the legislation comes a few days after the Pride flag at Stonewall National Monument’s federal flagpole in New York City, a well-known symbol for the LGBTQ+ community, was restored following a two-month legal battle and settlement with the Trump administration.

“Our administration will keep working to ensure LGBTQ+ New Yorkers can live safely and with dignity in our city,” he added.
