U.S. fired at Iranian vessel that approached aircraft carrier, officials say

    March 12, 2026 / 6:58 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington — An Iranian vessel sailed too close to the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, and the U.S. fired at the vessel, according to two U.S. officials briefed on the matter who spoke to CBS News under condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

The officials said a U.S. Navy vessel attempted to fire on the Iranian vessel using its 5-inch, 54-caliber Marck-45 gun, a fully automated naval cannon that is mounted to the forward deck of Navy destroyers and cruisers and has served as the fleet’s standard deck gun since the early 1970s.

While it’s not known which naval vessel fired on the Iranian ship, the officials said it missed multiple times.

The status of the Iranian ship and its crew is not known. The incident occurred earlier this week.

The USS Spruance and the USS Michael Murphy, both destroyers, are embarked with the Abraham Lincoln, which is operating in the Arabian Sea in support of U.S. military actions against Iran. However, six other guided-missile destroyers were operating in the Arabian Sea as of last week.

A helicopter equipped with Hellfire missiles was launched and struck the Iranian vessel with two of the missiles.

It’s unclear what type of helicopter was used, but Navy Seahawk helicopters and Marine Corps Viper attack helicopters both have the ability to carry Hellfire missiles. However, MH-60R Seahawks have a multi-mission role which include both anti-submarine warfare and anti-surface warfare.

CBS News contacted U.S. Central Command, the primary unit overseeing U.S. military operations against Iran. A defense official said: “We have nothing for you on this.”

The USS Abraham Lincoln is one of two American aircraft carriers deployed to the Middle East. The Lincoln carrier strike group arrived in the region in late January, part of what President Trump described as an “armada.”

In early February, an Iranian Shahed-139 drone “aggressively” approached the aircraft carrier and “unnecessarily maneuvered” toward it, a U.S. Central Command spokesperson said at the time. The drone was shot down by an American fighter jet, a tense moment between the U.S. and Iran weeks before the war between the two countries began.

Since the start of the U.S.’s war with Iran, American forces have damaged or destroyed over 90 Iranian vessels, according to Central Command.

A recent class-action lawsuit alleges that David Protein misrepresented the calorie and fat contents in its popular protein bars, a challenge for a company known for catering to health-conscious customers.

In the complaint, filed Jan. 23 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, three individuals who had bought David bars claim they contain “way more” calories and fat than the labels state. Independent and third-party testing, using a method known as the Atwater factors, determined that the number of calories exceeded the amount listed on the label by as much as 83%, the lawsuit claims.

    Fat content

The plaintiffs also allege that David Protein underestimated the fat content of its bars, with testing revealing that the fat content exceeds the label’s stated amount by as much as 400%.

David Protein’s website and product labels say the bars contain 150 calories, 28 grams of protein and 0 grams of sugar.

The lawsuit cites Food and Drug Administration guidelines, which dictate that a product is misbranded if the “nutrient content of the composite is greater than 20% in excess of the value for that nutrient declared on the label.”

“No one is getting Regina Georged”

The lawsuit lists Linus Technologies as the main defendant, a nutrition-focused company founded by entrepreneur Peter Rahal in 2023, according to market-intelligence platform Tracxn. Linus Technologies operates its business under the brand name David Protein.

Linus Technologies and David Protein did not immediately respond to a request for comment. On Wednesday, the company posted a statement on Instagram that read, “No one is getting Regina Georged,” a reference to the movie “Mean Girls” in which the protagonist Cady Heron dupes bully Regina George into eating a protein bar that causes weight gain.

After the lawsuit was filed in January, Rahal told Vanity Fair that the company “stands behind the accuracy of our product labeling” and that it plans to “defend this claim vigorously.”

The David bar came to market in 2024. The name is a nod to Michelangelo’s 16th-century masterpiece, according to Forbes.

The bars come in a variety of flavors, such as chocolate chip cookie and fudge brownie, and retail for $39 for a pack of 12, or $3.25 a bar.

Schumer swings at Hegseth over king crab meals for the troops, but Biden-era receipts show similar tab

Senate Democrat ignores Biden Pentagon chief’s $79B spending spree that included $103M on meat and seafood

    By Ashley Oliver
    Fox News
    Published March 12, 2026 3:23pm EDT

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., is facing backlash for criticizing Secretary of War Pete Hegseth for the Pentagon’s spending on luxury items, including food for the miliary, despite similar expenses under former Biden administration Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin.

The top Senate Democrat said Hegseth’s spending in the final month of fiscal year 2025, $93.4 billion, which included millions of dollars on steak, seafood and furniture, could have instead been used to extend the Affordable Care Act.

Social media users panned Schumer online for the remarks, accusing him of cherry-picking a politically convenient area to care about spending, lambasting him for not supporting feeding high-quality meals to military members and citing similar defense spending during the Biden era.

“Hegseth spent $93 billion in one month – roughly the cost of extending the ACA tax credits for THREE YEARS,” Schumer wrote. “But instead of lowering American’s healthcare costs, Hegseth used millions of taxpayer dollars on fruit baskets, Herman Miller recliners, ice cream machines, Alaskan King Crabs, and a Steinway & Sons grand piano.

“A true grifter in every sense of the word.”

During the Biden administration, Austin’s spending nearly mirrored Hegseth’s. Food expenses across administrations went toward feeding members of the military, according to the nonprofit Open the Books, which conducted the spending analyses.

There is no record of Schumer scrutinizing Austin’s spending. Fox News Digital reached out to the senator’s office for comment on the matter.

Defense spending is historically modest compared to past decades, representing a small fraction of the United States’ gross domestic product at 3.7%. Its share of the GDP has decreased significantly since the 1950s, according to an analysis by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis.

Schumer’s grievance also comes as he leads Senate Democrats’ resistance to funding the Department of Homeland Security, which has been shut down for about a month. Democrats have demanded changes to the department’s deportation policies, which are nonstarters for Republicans. Essential DHS components, like Immigration and Customs Enforcement, remain operational at this stage, but some agencies, like the Transportation Security Administration, are facing pains as workers go unpaid.

Critics slammed Schumer over the comment on social media.

Fox News analyst Guy Benson called Schumer “the leader of the ‘Learing Center’ fraud party,” in reference to a viral video about welfare fraud scandals in Minnesota, saying Schumer “finally [discovered] one spending line item he’s willing to cut.”

Rep. Pat Fallon, R-Texas, said Schumer “thinks it’s bad that U.S. troops get to eat steak & lobster during deployment” and that the Affordable Care Act is a “failed” plan that makes healthcare more expensive.

“Remember that Democrats would have you eating MREs,” another commenter posted, referring to military-issued “Meals Ready to Eat.”

“Chuck Schumer hates the troops,” Republican communicator Steve Guest wrote.

A commentary writer for the conservative Washington Examiner said, “You said nothing in 2024.”

Another social media user told Schumer he “should’ve done the 30 seconds of research to find Lloyd Austin’s September 2024 expenditures before posting. Missed your outrage back then.”

Hegseth’s spending in September 2025 was the highest the Pentagon has seen on grants and contracts since September 2008. Austin, however, held the record before that, spending $79.1 billion in September 2024.

The last month of the fiscal year has long been notorious for spending that appears lavish as agencies face pressure to “use it or lose it” so that they can justify keeping their budget for the next year. Contract and grant payment schedules also include September due dates, which can contribute to the spending uptick.

In 2024 under Austin, according to an audit by Open the Books, “the military spent $103.7 million on meat, fish and poultry in September, partially because it ordered raw lobster tail 147 times for $6.1 million. It also dropped $16.6 million on ribeye steak, $6.4 million on salmon and $407,000 on Alaskan king crab.”

Similar to Austin, Hegseth spent $6.9 million on lobster tail, Open the Books found. Austin spent about $1.5 million more than Hegseth on ribeye steaks. Hegseth more than quadrupled Austin’s spending on Alaskan king crab, while Austin’s spending on salmon was roughly six times that of Hegseth’s. The food went toward feeding military personnel, the nonprofit noted.

The Biden and Trump administration’s Pentagon expenses saw parallels for other line items, too. Hegseth’s $5.3 million on Apple products is comparable to Austin’s $5.1 million. Both spent more than $1 million on musical instruments. Hegseth tripled Austin’s spending on footrests at about $111,000, according to the data.

Trump weighs Jones Act waiver amid rising fuel prices, White House says

    Updated on: March 12, 2026 / 2:07 PM EDT / CBS News

The Trump administration is prepared to waive the Jones Act to loosen shipping rules as the Iran war continues, the White House said Thursday.

The 100-year-old statute requires goods shipped between U.S. ports to be carried on ships that are U.S.-built, U.S.-flagged and U.S.-crewed, and it limits the number of tankers domestic shippers can use.

“In the interest of national defense, the White House is considering waiving the Jones Act for a limited period of time to ensure vital energy products and agricultural necessities are flowing freely to U.S. ports,” White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said in a statement to CBS News. “This action has not been finalized.”

Waiving the rule would allow foreign ships to move fuel between U.S. ports, helping to ease supply disruptions and potentially lower energy prices, according to experts.

Oil and gas prices have surged since the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, raising costs for motorists and creating inflationary pressures.

Brent crude, which hovered around $60 in early January, rose 8% on Thursday and briefly topped $100, according to FactSet. West Texas Intermediate, the U.S. benchmark, jumped nearly 9% to $95.02 a barrel.

Energy costs are flaring even after the Trump administration and the International Energy Agency said on Wednesday that member countries in the organization would inject a total of 400 million barrels into global energy markets to shore up oil supply.

Gas prices, which are influenced by the cost of oil, taxes and other seasonal factors, also swung higher on Thursday, hitting $3.60 a gallon, according to AAA. That’s up about 60 cents since before the war started.

A massive bipartisan swell advanced a Trump-backed affordable housing package out of the Senate on Thursday, but its fate in the House is up in the air.

The bill, renamed the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act to incorporate a previous Senate housing bill that stalled last year, easily sailed through the upper chamber, given that many lawmakers support the wide-ranging slate of measures designed to increase the supply of affordable housing.

In its original form, the legislation was primarily intended to help first-time homebuyers and lower-income Americans enter the housing market or gain access to more affordable housing options.

The Senate tweaked the legislation, adding a ban on institutional investors sought by President Donald Trump, who earlier this year signed an executive order barring the practice. During his State of the Union address last month, Trump urged Congress to codify the ban and said, “We want homes for people, not for corporations.”

That provision gave some heartburn, notably to Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, and several industry groups, who warned that the way it was designed — forcing owners of 350 or more units to sell after seven years — would kneecap the build-to-rent market and harm the supply of rentals throughout the country.

That was not enough to slow the bill down in the Senate, but Trump’s declaration that he wouldn’t sign any bills unless the Senate passed voter ID legislation, along with House Republicans grumbling over changes to the bill, could spell trouble ahead.

Rep. Mike Flood, R-Neb., co-lead of the House’s version of the bill, told Fox News Digital, “It seems to me that there are outstanding concerns with the Senate’s housing bill as currently drafted.”

He echoed Schatz’s concern about the build-to-rent supply consequences and added that the bill was “intended to cut costs, but the Senate removed important bipartisan House provisions that would have slashed barriers to building more homes.”

“Their process is still ongoing, and I am holding out hope for some fixes, but time runs short,” Flood said. “Given the bill’s current state, I think a conference may be the most viable path forward.”

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., said he believes that once the bill makes it through the Senate, “the White House will be wanting to work with our House counterparts to try and get it passed over there and get it on the President’s desk.”

“We know we’ve added some things to the bill here in the Senate that were designed to make it more palatable to the House. I know there are other issues they would like to address in it, some of the banking issues too, but I think this is, by and large, a housing bill.”

“So, we think we have really put together a strong bill,” Thune continued. “It’s something that hasn’t been done in over a decade.”

It’s a product of negotiations between Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., the chair of the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, and Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., its top Democrat.

The pair argued that the changes made should make the legislation more palatable to their House counterparts.

“The package includes the vast majority of the Senate’s unanimously supported ROAD to Housing Act, incorporates bipartisan ideas from the House, and takes a good first step to rein in corporate landlords that are squeezing families out of homeownership,” Warren said earlier this month. “Congress should pass this package and continue working on further legislation to combat our nation’s housing crisis.”

New Iran Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei says Strait of Hormuz must remain shut in first message: State TV

    Updated on: March 12, 2026 / 12:26 PM EDT / CBS News

Iran’s state-run media issued on Thursday the first public statement attributed to the Islamic Republic’s new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, since his appointment in the wake of his father and predecessor Ali Khamenei’s killing on Feb. 28, in the initial U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran.

His statement was read out by a presenter on Iranian state television and accompanied by a photo of Khamenei, but no audio or video of the new leader. The format in which the Iranian regime released his statement did little to quell rumors that he could actually have been incapacitated, possibly even left in a coma, in the same strike that killed his father and mother.

An Iranian official said Wednesday that the new supreme leader was injured in the attack, but “alive and well,” though he has not been seen since the war began.

In the statement read by the presenter on Thursday, attributed to Khamanei, he says he learned of his appointment on state TV along with everyone else in Iran, and that it would be difficult to follow in his father’s footsteps.

A screengrab from Iranian state TV shows a graphic aired during the reading of a statement attributed to Iran’s new Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, on March 12, 2026. Reuters

“I had the opportunity to visit [the former Supreme Leader’s] body after his martyrdom. What I saw was a mountain of strength, and I heard that his healthy hand was clenched in a fist,” he said.

The statement went on to say that during the time before Khamenei was appointed as the new supreme leader, in the days after his father was killed, “it was you, the people, who led the country and guaranteed its authority.”

He expressed “sincere gratitude to our brave warriors” and added that “the lever of blocking the Strait of Hormuz must definitely continue to be used” as a tool in the ongoing war with the U.S. and Israel.

“Studies have been conducted on opening other fronts in which the enemy has little experience and will be extremely vulnerable in them, and their activation will be carried out if the war situation continues and based on the observance of interests,” he said.

He also thanked “the warriors of the Resistance Front,” describing them as the Islamic Republic’s “best friends,” seemingly referring to Iran’s network of armed proxy groups across the Middle East.

    CBS News

“The brave and faithful Yemen did not stop defending the oppressed people of Gaza, and the devoted Hezbollah has come to the aid of the Islamic Republic despite all obstacles, and the Iraqi resistance has also courageously taken the same line,” the statement said.

Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi rebels have so far not intervened on Tehran’s behalf since the U.S. and Israel launched their assault. Hezbollah has launched weapons at Israel and possibly other targets and has been the focus of a widespread and still expanding Israeli military assault in Lebanon this week.

To Iranians who lost loved ones, or who were hurt or had their businesses damaged in the U.S.-Israeli strikes, Khamenei expressed his sympathy and noted that he had also lost, in addition to his father, his wife, sister and other relatives.

The message also urged Iranians who had lost loved ones to have patience and faith in the promise of God, adding that Iran would “not refrain from avenging the blood of your martyrs. The revenge we intend is not only related to the martyrdom of the Supreme Leader of the Revolution; rather, every member of the nation who is martyred by the enemy is an independent subject for the revenge case.”

“We will receive compensation from the enemy, and if he refuses, we will take as much of his property as we determine, and if that is not possible, we will destroy the same amount of his property,” he declared.

The statement went on to say Iran had always been and was still “willing to have warm and constructive relations with all” of its regional neighbors, but said “the enemy has been gradually establishing military and financial bases in some of these countries for years in order to secure its dominance over the region,” seemingly justifying Iran’s missile and drone attacks on its Gulf neighbors over the past 13 days.

Addressing why Iran was targeting other Gulf nations, the statement said “some military bases were used” in the ongoing U.S.-Israeli attack, “and naturally, as we had explicitly warned, we simply attacked those bases without attacking those countries. From now on, we will inevitably continue to do so, although we still believe in the need for friendship between ourselves and our neighbors. These countries must make their duty clear to the invaders of our beloved homeland and the murderers of our people. I recommend that they close those bases as soon as possible; because they must have realized by now that the claim of establishing security and peace by America was nothing more than a lie.”

Pentagon estimates Iran war cost $11.3B in the first six days in closed-door congressional hearing: report

The costly war comes as the nation’s national debt nears $39 trillion

    By Alex Nitzberg
    Fox News
    Published March 12, 2026 2:14pm EDT

Pentagon officials on Tuesday told legislators during a closed-door briefing that they estimated that the cost of the Iran war was more than $11.3 billion during the initial six days of the conflict, the New York Times reported, citing three unnamed individuals familiar with the briefing.

That estimate did not encompass many expenses tied to the effort, such as buildup of military assets and personnel prior to the first strikes, the outlet added.

Other reports indicate that the briefing involved senators.

A Senate Armed Services Committee staffer, who noted that he could only speak for the minority staff and Ranking Member Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., referred Fox News Digital to a March 10 letter that the senator sent to Secretary of War Pete Hegseth, pressing for information about the costs of the war.

“Since the initial strikes on February 28, 2026, how much has the Department spent on these operations? How much are the daily costs of these operations? What are the costs to readiness? How much funding does the Department need to replenish munitions and aircraft combat losses?” Reed asked in part of the letter.

No comment was provided by the GOP side of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

Fox News Digital also reached out to the Department of War and the House Armed Services Committee Republican communications office on Thursday.

The war-related outlays come as the ever-expanding U.S. national debt nears the $39 trillion mark.

And while President Donald Trump has been waging the costly war in conjunction with Israel, a key U.S. ally in the Middle East, Americans have been seeing a significant surge in gas prices at home.

“The United States is the largest Oil Producer in the World, by far, so when oil prices go up, we make a lot of money. BUT, of far greater interest and importance to me, as President, is stoping [sic] an evil Empire, Iran, from having Nuclear Weapons, and destroying the Middle East and, indeed, the World. I won’t ever let that happen!” Trump said in a Thursday Truth Social post.
