WASHINGTON, March 23 (Reuters) – U.S. immigration agents ​began deploying at more than a dozen U.S. airports on Monday to aid security screening as staffing ‌absences by unpaid airport security officers have caused massive delays.

The Homeland Security Department confirmed it had begun deploying hundreds of Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents to assist in security at airports facing significant staffing issues.

DHS said that on Sunday nearly 12% of ​Transportation Security Administration officers — or more than 3,450 — did not show up for work, the highest since ​a partial government shutdown began more than five weeks ago.

ICE and Homeland Security Investigations ⁠officers were being deployed to around 14 airports including in Atlanta, two in New York, Newark, New Orleans, ​Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Phoenix, and Fort Myers, Florida, according to officials and social media posts.

Separately, Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson – the busiest U.S. ​airport – told passengers to arrive at least four hours early on Monday for flights after more than 40% of TSA officers did not show up for work on Sunday.

CROWD CONTROL, NOT IMMIGRATION ENFORCEMENT

The nation’s 50,000 TSA airport security officers are not getting ​paid due to the partial shutdown.

Social media posts showed ICE agents standing near TSA officers who were checking ​IDs.

For now, ICE personnel will not be deployed in areas behind airport security checkpoints because they lack the specific clearance needed, ‌sources told ⁠Reuters.

At airports in Houston, Baltimore, New Orleans, New York and Atlanta, more than one-third of TSA staff were calling in sick or otherwise absent, DHS said, as the shutdown left tens of thousands working without pay while congressional Democrats and Republicans argue over the DHS budget.

OnlyFans owner Leonid Radvinsky dies of cancer at 43

OnlyFans owner Leonid Radvinsky, a reclusive billionaire who transformed a little-known adult-content site into a cultural touchstone, has died of cancer, the company said Monday. Radvinsky was 43.

“We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Leo Radvinsky. Leo passed away peacefully after a long battle with cancer,” OnlyFans said in a statement to CBS News. “His family have requested privacy at this difficult time.”

Radvinsky was worth $4.7 billion at the time of his death, according to Forbes.

Radvinsky, who was born in Ukraine, grew up in Chicago. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Northwestern University, where he started a porn website referral business while a student, according to Forbes. He later started a business called MyFreeCams that sold subscriptions to content creators’ videos and photos, the Wall Street Journal reported.

In 2018, Radvinsky bought OnlyFans from Guy and Tim Stokely, a father and son team who had founded the business two years earlier. OnlyFans sells subscriptions to individual creators’ content, often racy videos and photos that are barred on platforms like Instagram.

Under Radvinsky’s ownership, OnlyFans grew from about 350,000 content creators in 2019 to 4.6 million in 2024, according to regulatory filings. The company’s revenue soared to $1.4 billion in 2024, up from about $59 million in 2019.

The growing popularity of OnlyFans also bolstered Radvinsky’s fortunes, with the company paying him about $1.8 billion in dividends since 2021, Bloomberg News reported.

Dow jumps more than 1,000 points after Trump delays ultimatum for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz

The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged more than 1,000 points in early trading on Monday after President Trump postponed an ultimatum for Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, saying that the U.S. is engaged in “good and productive” negotiations with Tehran.

The blue-chip index jumped 1,076 points, or 2.4%, to 46,654. Other indices also climbed, with the S&P 500 adding 138 points, or 2.1% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite index gaining 2.4%.

Before Mr. Trump announced the delay on social media, futures had pointed to an almost 1% decline in stocks.

Oil price decline

Oil prices also immediately retreated. Brent crude, the international benchmark, fell to as low as $96 per barrrel immediately after Mr. Trump announced the postponement before paring its loss to $101.26, down from nearly $120 last week. West Texas Intermediate, the U.S. benchmark, dropped to $84 per barrel and then rose to $90.11.

Mr. Trump had earlier set a deadline of Monday night for Iran to reopen ship traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, which carries about 20% of the world’s oil supply, threatening to “obliterate” Iran’s power plants if it didn’t concede. Iran responded by threatening to attack U.S. and Israeli energy and infrastructure assets in the region.

On Monday morning, Mr. Trump said the U.S. would hold off on strikes against Iranian power plants and other energy infrastructure for five days. That is easing investor concerns that the Iran war could escalate, worsening the growing oil crisis.

“The global economy was teetering on the edge of a precipice the likes of which Trump had never encountered during either of his two terms (worse than COVID and worse than tariffs), and his instinct for self-preservation is too great to drive off the cliff deliberately,” Wall Street analyst Adam Crisafulli, head of Vital Knowledge, told investors in a research note.

Status of talks unclear

However, the Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a statement that contradicted Mr. Trump’s post.

“We deny what US President Donald Trump said regarding negotiations taking place between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran,” the statement said.

Even with Monday’s decline in oil prices, crude is trading about 45% higher than it was before the start of the Iran war in late February. Americans are paying an average of $3.96 for a gallon of gasoline, up more than $1 per gallon from one month ago, according to AAA.

The economic fallout is likely to linger even if fighting ends today, Crisafulli said. “But at least now there is a line of sight toward resolution,” he said.

At the same time, investors will want to see tangible proof that there’s progress to maintain market gains, noted Chris Larkin, managing director of trading and investing at E*TRADE from Morgan Stanley, in an email.

“With stocks challenging the boundary between consolidation and a larger downturn, the market woke up to some potentially good news out of the Middle East on Monday,” he said. “But follow-through on any relief rally will likely require tangible follow-through on the geopolitical front.”

March 23 (Reuters) – The U.S. Supreme Court declined on Monday to hear a bid by an online citizen journalist to revive her lawsuit accusing ​authorities in the Texas city of Laredo of wrongful arrest after she asked for and obtained from police nonpublic information about cases.

The ‌justices turned away Priscilla Villarreal’s appeal of a lower court’s ruling that the police officers and prosecutors she accused of retaliation were protected by a legal doctrine called qualified immunity and could not be sued for violating her free speech rights under the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment.
