Rudy Giuliani out of ICU after hospitalization for pneumonia

    2026-05-06T20:17:00-0400 / CBS News

Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has left the intensive care unit, his spokesperson said, after being hospitalized with pneumonia.

Giuliani “will spend some time recovering before leaving the hospital,” spokesperson Ted Goodman said in a statement, adding: “The mayor and his family appreciate the outpouring of love and prayers sent his way.”

Giuliani had been hospitalized in critical condition earlier this week, his spokesperson said Sunday. Goodman said Giuliani was previously diagnosed with restrictive airway disease, which he said was a result of his proximity to the collapsed World Trade Center towers on Sept. 11, 2001.

“This condition adds complications to any respiratory illness, and the virus quickly overwhelmed his body, requiring mechanical ventilation to maintain adequate oxygen and stabilize his condition,” Goodman said Monday.

Giuliani rose to prominence in the 1980s, when he worked as Manhattan’s top federal prosecutor and oversaw a slate of high-profile cases against Mafia leaders. He then served as mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2001, and was best known for presiding over the local response to the Sept. 11 terror attacks, earning the moniker “America’s mayor.” Giuliani later ran for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008.

Giuliani eventually became a close ally and personal attorney to President Trump, and was one of the most prominent figures in Mr. Trump’s efforts to challenge the results of the 2020 presidential election. During the period after the election, Giuliani repeated baseless claims about voter fraud and gave a raucous speech at a D.C. rally hours before the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot. Giuliani has argued his speech had no connection to the violence later that day.

As a result of those efforts, Giuliani was disbarred in New York and Washington, D.C., after a New York court found he spread “demonstrably false and misleading statements” to courts, lawmakers and the public. Giuliani also declared bankruptcy after being found liable for $148 million for spreading falsehoods about Georgia election workers.

Giuliani and others tied to the false elector scheme were pardoned by Mr. Trump in November 2025, though the pardon does not protect against state charges, which Giuliani faced in Georgia and Arizona. A Georgia judge dismissed that case late last year.

    • Trump administration joined lawsuit earlier this year against medical school
    • David Geffen School of Medicine says its admission process is based on merit
    • Trump has cracked down on schools over a range of issues

WASHINGTON, May 6 (Reuters) – The U.S. Justice Department said ‌on Wednesday admissions practices at UCLA’s medical school were biased in favor of Black and Hispanic applicants, citing findings of a probe as the Trump administration continues its crackdown on diversity policies at colleges.

The University of California Los Angeles’ David Geffen School of Medicine said it was “carefully reviewing” the Justice Department’s report and reiterated that its admissions process “is based on merit and grounded in a rigorous, comprehensive review of each applicant.”

The school said it was “confident in our practices.”

The Justice Department joined a lawsuit in January that alleged the use of race as a factor in admissions at the medical school.

The University of California system, of which UCLA is a part, has previously said it stopped using race as a factor in admissions after the practice was banned by a state law passed in the mid-1990s.

“The investigation showed that, on average, admitted Black and Hispanic applicants had consistently lower academic qualifications than their white ‌and Asian counterparts,” the Justice Department said on Wednesday.

The institution violated the law “by intentionally discriminating based on race in its admissions selections,” it said.

The Supreme Court rejected affirmative action at colleges and universities in 2023 when it struck down race-conscious admissions programs at Harvard University and the University of North Carolina.

President Donald Trump, who casts diversity goals as anti-merit and as discriminatory against groups like white people and men, has signed executive orders to dismantle those policies in the government and private sector.

Civil rights advocates say diversity practices help address historic inequities for marginalized groups like women, the LGBT community and ethnic minorities.

Trump has targeted universities over a range of issues like diversity goals, climate initiatives, transgender policies and pro-Palestinian protests against U.S. ally Israel’s assault on Gaza. Rights advocates have raised academic freedom, free speech and due process concerns.

Trump had frozen some federal grants for UCLA last year but a judge later ordered his administration to restore those funds.

Suspect arrested in Oklahoma party shooting that killed 1, injured 22, police say

    May 6, 2026 / 5:17 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Police announced Wednesday that an 18-year-old has been arrested in a shooting that left one woman dead and 22 other people wounded last weekend during a nighttime party beside an Oklahoma lake.

Police in the Oklahoma City suburb of Edmond said the man, identified as Jaylan Amhad Davis, has been charged in connection with the Sunday night shooting, which erupted following an argument between two females that escalated into an altercation between rival gang members. Police said that more than 80 rounds were fired.

Davis was charged with assault with a deadly weapon, and the charge will be upgraded to felony murder, Edmond Police Chief J.D. Younger said at a news conference. His bond was set at $1 million, according to jail records. The woman killed was identified as 18-year-old Avianna Smith-Gray.

It was not immediately known if he had a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.

Younger said Davis turned himself in Wednesday morning after police produced an arrest warrant. Police believe there’s at least one more suspect.

“We’re trying to find justice for 23 people that were shot, one that’s deceased and even the people that were involved. I think it’s important not to demonize or separate the parties here,” Younger said.

Authorities first received reports of shots being fired at about 9 p.m. Sunday. The shooting took place at Arcadia Lake, a popular boating, fishing and swimming spot in the suburb just 13 miles north of Oklahoma City. Six of the victims are juveniles, some as young as 15, Younger said.

The party had been promoted across social media and drew a large crowd of mostly young adults from around the Oklahoma City area.

The shooting broke out just as officers were responding to a noise complaint about the party, police previously said. They noted that organizers hadn’t sought the necessary reservations for such an event.

May 6 (Reuters) – The Trump administration sued Colorado on Wednesday seeking to strike down a 13-year-old state ban ‌on large-capacity firearm ammunition magazines, those allowing more than 15 bullets to be fired in rapid succession without the need to re-load.

The lawsuit claims that Colorado’s restriction on gun magazines, enacted in 2013 in the wake of a mass shooting that killed 12 people and wounded 58 others inside an Aurora movie theater, infringes on the rights to own and bear arms under the U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment.

A federal appeals court in 2016 ordered dismissal of a similar case brought by a group of county sheriffs, gun shops, outfitters and shooting ranges challenging the ban on large-capacity magazines and a measure requiring universal background checks for gun buyers.

In that case, a three-judge panel of the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals found the plaintiffs lacked legal standing to bring their suit because they failed to demonstrate that they would have been personally harmed by the laws.

Wednesday’s Department of Justice complaint cites the 2008 U.S. Supreme Court decision from a landmark case known as the District of Columbia v. Heller, ruling that the Second Amendment protects the rights of law-abiding citizens to possess guns in common use for lawful purposes.

    Advertisement · Scroll to continue

The 11-page DOJ suit, initiated ‌by its civil rights division, argues that magazines holding more than 15 rounds come standard with many of the most popular firearms in the U.S., including AR-15-style rifles and some semi-automatic pistols.

“The number of lawfully owned semi-automatic firearms in the United States that utilize a magazine like the ones banned by the state is in the tens of millions,” the suit says. Thus, outlawing large-capacity magazines in effect restricts individuals’ rights to own weapons “in common use.”

It adds that such weapons are “used for multiple lawful purposes,” such as recreational target shooting, collecting and self-defense. The lawsuit seeks a court order barring enforcement of the Colorado statute.

Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser issued a statement vowing to defend the state’s gun-safety measures, and saying the lawsuit “turns the mission of the DOJ’s civil rights division on its head.”

“Large-capacity magazine laws are responsible policies that satisfy Second Amendment protections, decrease impacts of mass shootings and save lives,” Weiser said. “The state has a duty to protect Colorado residents from gun violence.”

The DOJ complaint against Colorado’s large-capacity magazine ban came a day after the department filed a separate lawsuit challenging a long-standing Denver city ordinance banning semi-automatic rifles it defines as assault weapons.

What Israel wants from an Iran peace deal: No enrichment, missile limits and strict enforcement

As President Donald Trump signals progress toward a possible agreement with Iran, Israeli officials and analysts increasingly are outlining what Jerusalem believes any deal must include to prevent Tehran from rebuilding its military and regional power.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that Israel and the United States remain in “full coordination” as negotiations continue.

“We share common objectives, and the most important objective is the removal of the enriched material from Iran, all the enriched material, and the dismantling of Iran’s enrichment capabilities,” Netanyahu said at the opening of a security cabinet meeting.

US AND IRAN CLASH OVER URANIUM ENRICHMENT AS NUCLEAR TALKS RESUME IN ROME

“We’ve had very good talks over the last 24 hours, and it’s very possible that we’ll make a deal,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office Wednesday.

At the same time, Trump warned that if negotiations fail, “we’ll have to go a big step further.”

For Israel, the question is not simply whether the war ends, but whether Iran emerges from negotiations weakened or repositioned to rebuild. Israeli officials fear a weak agreement could allow Tehran to preserve strategic capabilities, regain economic breathing room and eventually restore the regional network of armed groups that threatened Israel before the war. Jerusalem is also seeking guarantees that any future deal preserves military leverage and freedom of action if Iran violates its commitments.

Against that backdrop, Israeli analysts say Jerusalem’s red lines focus on four core areas: dismantling Iran’s enrichment infrastructure, restricting its ballistic missile program, preventing Tehran from rebuilding Hezbollah and Hamas, and ensuring the regime does not gain political legitimacy or strategic relief from the negotiations.

    No enrichment, no sunsets

On the nuclear issue, former Israeli National Security Advisor Yaakov Amidror said Israel’s position remains uncompromising.

“Weaponized uranium must leave Iran,” Amidror said. “The Iranians must not be allowed to enrich uranium.”

Israeli journalist and commentator Nadav Eyal agreed, adding that Israel is seeking a much stricter framework than previous agreements.

“Israel wants Iran to stop enrichment for as long as possible and for the enriched material to leave Iran,” Eyal said, adding that Jerusalem is looking for “an arms control agreement that would be extensive and robust.”

Avner Golov, vice president of the Mind Israel think tank, told Fox News Digital that Israel also wants Iran’s underground nuclear infrastructure dismantled entirely.

“In the nuclear arena, what matters is the removal of the enriched material, the destruction of the underground facilities, including those still being built, and a prohibition on new sites,” Golov said.

Golov also warned against “sunset clauses” that would allow restrictions to expire after several years.

“There must be an agreement without sunsets,” he said, calling for “unprecedented monitoring and supervision, anywhere, under any conditions and not dependent on Iranian approval.”

Jonathan Ruhe, Jewish Institute for National Security of America (JINSA) fellow for American strategy, told Fox News Digital, “Ultimately the United States and Israel should have strongly similar redlines for an acceptable deal,” he said, including “shutting down Iran’s nuclear weapons program completely, permanently and verifiably.”

Ruhe said that goes beyond Iran handing over highly enriched uranium and includes shutting down remaining enrichment-related facilities at Pickaxe and Isfahan.

    Missiles seen as equal threat

Alongside the nuclear issue, Israeli analysts say Iran’s ballistic missile program has become equally central to Israel’s security concerns.

“One of the key questions is whether there will be any sort of limitation on the ballistic missile program of the Iranians,” Eyal said. “Israel sees this as no less of an existential threat than the nuclear issue.”

Amidror warned that without missile restrictions, the threat could eventually extend beyond Israel and Europe.

“If there are no restrictions on the missile program, then missiles that today can reach half of Europe will, within five to 10 years, be able to reach the United States,” he warned.

Golov argued that a nuclear-only agreement would leave Iran free to rebuild a missile shield protecting a future nuclear breakout.

“A deal that focuses only on the nuclear program would allow the Iranians to produce thousands of missiles and create a protective shield around their nuclear program.”

Ruhe similarly said limiting Iran’s missile arsenal must include preventing Iran from rebuilding production capabilities damaged during the war.

Hamas, Hezbollah and the proxies question

Another major Israeli concern is that sanctions relief or renewed trade could funnel money back to Iran’s regional proxies.

“Israel is demanding that the Islamic Republic isolate itself from involvement with Lebanon and Gaza and stop supporting armed groups that operate against Israel,” Eyal said.

“For Israel, it is a material issue that the money injected into Iran will not be used to rebuild the proxies in the region,” he added.

Amidror said Iran’s ability to support Hezbollah and Hamas has already been weakened by the collapse of regional supply routes.

“The Iranians cannot effectively support the proxies because there is no longer a land bridge from Iran to Syria,” he said, but warned that if negotiations leave the impression that Washington backed down, Iran’s regional proxies could emerge stronger even after the war.

    No ‘victory image’ for Tehran

Ruhe similarly argued that Israel wants to avoid any agreement that restores legitimacy to the Iranian regime without fundamentally weakening it.

“Avoiding anything that legitimates Iran’s regime and abandons the Iranian people” is critical, Ruhe said, including “giving guarantees against future attacks or compensating Tehran for wartime damages.”

Ruhe warned that for Israel, a “bad deal” is ultimately any agreement that restrains Israel’s future freedom of action against Iran and its proxies.

“This is one big reason Iran wants to ensnare the Trump administration in open-ended negotiations that sideline military options and create daylight between Washington and Jerusalem,” Ruhe said.

Judge releases purported Jeffrey Epstein suicide note

    Updated May 6, 2026, 7:36 PM ET / CNN

    By Dan Berman

A federal judge unsealed a purported suicide note from Jeffrey Epstein on Wednesday.

The unverified and undated document was placed on the court docket in the case of a former cellmate of the late convicted sex offender who said he had found the note.

The note — which is not signed — reads, in part:

“They investigated me for month – found NOTHING!!!

“It is a treat to be able to chose ones time to say goodbye.”

“NO FUN – NOT WORTH IT!!

A purported suicide note from Jeffrey Epstein unsealed by a federal judge. The document is unverified and undated but was placed on the court docket in the case of a former Epstein cellmate who said he had found the note.

US District Court Southern District of New York

District Judge Kenneth Karas of the Southern District of New York ordered the release of the note following a request from The New York Times.

The note’s unsealing comes amid ongoing interest in the so-called Epstein files, his death by suicide in 2019 and federal investigations into his activities. The Justice Department released millions of documents related to Epstein after Congress passed a transparency bill last fall.

In a court filing, the Justice Department indicated it did not know if the purported note is legitimate.

“There appears to be a strong public interest in the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death as described in the unsealing motion,” the department said.

CNN has reached out to DOJ for comment.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
