Former Knicks star and Sen. Bill Bradley says Trump is “second fiddle” for fans at NBA Finals Game 3

    June 8, 2026 / 6:51 PM EDT / CBS News

Former New York Knicks star and ex-New Jersey Sen. Bill Bradley was a crucial part of the Knicks’ last championship team more than 50 years ago, and with President Trump attending the first NBA Finals game at Madison Square Garden since 1999 on Monday night, Bradley said “he’s second fiddle” when it comes to the main attraction.

“The people are there to see these two teams play,” Bradley told CBS News’ Nikole Killion. “And what is compelling about the teams are the values they display like unselfishness, discipline, resilience, the kind of things that we need more of in our world at large.”

Bradley spent all 10 seasons of his NBA career with the Knicks, winning two titles in 1969-1970 and 1972-1973, also earning his single All-Star nod in the ’72-’73 season.

“If you think of your teammate first and yourself second, that’s an important thing that the Knicks today and the Knicks in the past demonstrate,” Bradley said when asked what makes this team similar to the ones that won those two championships. “If you’re disciplined, you’re not just flying off but you’re playing to plan; that’s another thing. So this is not rocket science. It’s what a team does if they want to be a champion. And I think this team has the makings of a champion.”

Bill Bradley drives toward the basket as Willis Reed sets a pick against the Buffalo Braves during an NBA basketball game in Madison Square Garden on Oct. 16, 1973. Ross Lewis

Asked what makes Madison Square Garden such a special place to play, Bradley said it’s the fans.

“They applaud the pass that leads to the pass that leads to the basket. They applaud boxing out on rebounds. They applaud the subtleties of the game,” said Bradley, who also won a gold medal at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. “And they are deeply enthusiastic and loyal and dedicated to their team, and I think you’ll see that in the arena tonight, as you have in all the other games.”

With the Knicks holding a 2-0 lead in the best-of-seven series, Bradley didn’t call Monday night’s game a must-win for the San Antonio Spurs, but noted: “If the Knicks go in 3-0, I mean, I know I’m gonna be there on that fourth game expecting them to be crowned champions that night. And there’ll be millions of other people who will think the same thing.”

But the Hall of Famer added: “You play one game at a time.”

New York City is famously divided in most of its sports fandom, with the Yankees and Mets, Giants and Jets, and Islanders and Rangers carving up the populace. But despite the Nets’ move to Brooklyn in 2012, the Knicks still appear to have a tight grip on most of the city’s basketball fans.

“It gives them something to hope for. It gives them something to believe in,” Bradley said of the city’s devotion to a team that has been disappointing for long stretches of time. “It gives them some message that unchanging values can actually succeed — in your life and with the Knicks.”

He said the values of the team, like their discipline and resilience, “mean something in a championship team and they really can mean something in people’s lives, too.”

After retiring from basketball, Bradley, a Democrat, was elected to the U.S. Senate representing New Jersey in 1978. He served three terms before opting against running for a fourth in 1996. He also unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2000. Despite his political career and Mr. Trump’s presence at the game, Bradley said playing for an NBA title is “not related to politics.”

“It’s related to excellence, and to these unchanging values, and to team. It always has been and always will,” he said. “And that’s why people always come back to it. Because we want a glimpse of what is possible. And to believe that that’s possible in our lives at large and in the world and in the country is, to me, inspiring. And so, to me, that’s what these games are all about.”

U.S. bars entry of FIFA World Cup referee from Somalia, citing “vetting concerns”

Federal immigration authorities barred a Somali soccer referee who was slated to officiate the FIFA World Cup from entering the U.S. over the weekend, Customs and Border Protection said in a statement Monday, citing “vetting concerns.”

A FIFA spokesperson confirmed one of its officials, Omar Abdulkadir Artan, “will be unable to train and officiate at the FIFA World Cup 2026 after he was denied entry into the United States.”

“FIFA is not involved in host country immigration processes, including visa adjudications, and has been informed by authorities that Mr. Artan’s status will not be changed at present,” the spokesperson said. “In line with previous FIFA events, a host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and who is admitted into their country.”

CBP, which oversees customs agents at international airports, said the referee was “determined to be inadmissible due to vetting concerns and was denied entry.” He had arrived at Miami International Airport on Saturday on a flight from Istanbul, and underwent additional inspection, CBP said.

It is unclear why Artan was denied entry, but Somalia is one of 39 countries listed on President Trump’s “travel ban” executive order signed last year, which bars or restricts the entry of foreign nationals on national security grounds. Somalia is among the countries facing a near-total restriction on entry into the U.S., and while that order has exemptions for World Cup athletes and staff, immigration officials retain broad discretion to decide whether to grant or deny someone entry.

CBP said in its statement that it evaluates people seeking to enter the country “on a case-by-case basis using law enforcement, national security, and immigration information available at the time of inspection.”

CBS News has attempted to reach out to Artan for comment.

Ciise Aden Abshir, a senior adviser to Somalia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports and a former national team captain, condemned the decision not to admit Artan. He told Agence France-Presse that Artan is “among Africa’s most respected referees and deserves the support of the entire football community,” and argued the decision “undermines football’s commitment to fairness, merit, and the spirit of fair play.”

Artan has officiated international soccer matches for years, including at the Africa Cup of Nations, and he was named male referee of the year by the Confederation for African Football last year.

The U.S. is hosting the 2026 World Cup, alongside Mexico and Canada. The tournament is set to start Thursday with a match in Mexico City, and will span more than a dozen other venues.

The tournament — which will include teams from 48 countries and scores of foreign tourists — follows a more-than-yearlong effort by the Trump administration to tighten entry into the United States, sparking worries that the games could be impacted.

Amid the war in the Middle East, some Iranian soccer officials still do not have U.S. visas, according to Iranian state television. The team is also facing strict restrictions on when it can enter the U.S. before a match and how long it can stay after the conclusion before returning to its training grounds in Mexico.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers will play a role in security at the World Cup. White House border czar Tom Homan told CBS News last week that ICE’s “primary focus” will be national security, not immigration enforcement.

“In the process of that, if we find a national security issue and it involves an illegal alien, of course we’re going to take action on that,” Homan said. “But the primary focus is: Keep those events safe, keep this nation safe and keep the spectators and the athletes safe.”

Great white shark captured on video in Mediterranean Sea in “insane” sighting

    June 8, 2026 / 12:25 PM EDT / CBS News

A great white shark has been recorded in the Mediterranean Sea in what some divers believe to be the first underwater video of the species in the body of water. The Mediterranean is a known habitat of great whites, but sightings are extremely rare and usually happen near the surface.

Derk Remmers, a volunteer diver for the Ghost Diving organization, filmed the animal during a dive off the Strait of Sicily. He told CBS News’ partner network BBC that “the shark was pretty close to us … and in fact my fingers were trembling when I was trying to get the camera operating.”

In a separate statement he called spotting the shark offshore in the Mediterranean “insane.”

Remmers was participating in a mission organized by the Healthy Seas foundation to remove abandoned fishing nets and equipment from biodiversity hotspots underwater. The organization says it had documented animals, including sea turtles, trapped in abandoned fishing gear at the site on previous dives.

A great white shark was filmed in the Mediterranean Sea in June 2026 in a rare sighting by a diver who was working to clear abandoned fishing gear. Derk Remmers/Ghost Diving

“Statistically, it is way more likely to win the lotto jackpot than to meet such an iconic animal underwater. You spend decades diving wrecks and removing ghost nets, but nothing prepares you for a moment like this,” Remmers said in a statement.

He said the encounter reminded him of the importance of protecting sea life from threats such as overfishing and abandoned fishing gear.

Since 2016, the International Union for Conservation of Nature has qualified the great white shark as “critically endangered” in the Mediterranean Sea.

Workers say they like remote work. Research shows it hurts their mental health.

Americans routinely say they relish the ability to work from home or remotely rather than commute to an office. Yet new research suggests that untethering yourself can come at a cost.

New research from Federal Reserve Bank of New York economist Natalia Emanuel published in Science found that remote work, while often boosting productivity, also often leaves employees feeling socially isolated and leads to mental health issues.

To be sure, polls consistently show that workers enjoy remote work and are even willing to sacrifice pay for greater flexibility. Workers in remote arrangements also commonly report increased job satisfaction and better work-life balance. But the longer-term costs of ditching the office are worth considering, Emanuel’s research suggests.

“We found that remote work increases time spent alone, worsens mental well-being across multiple measures, and increases the use of mental health services and prescriptions,” the study states.

“Although a large body of research finds that workers want to work remotely, our findings suggest that workers may not realize the costs of remote work for their well-being, which may take time to accumulate,” noted the authors, who drew on five national surveys of employees in a range of jobs.

    The cost of alone time

Remote work quadrupled from 7% of U.S. workers in 2019 to 28% in 2023, a shift mostly triggered by the pandemic.

Over a roughly 10-year period before and after the pandemic, remote workers experienced a 58% rise in hours spent alone, compared to in-office workers, the New York Fed found. Remote workers also became significantly more likely to go a full day without any human contact. That meant “no idle chitchat with a barista, no hello from a co-worker, no smile from a passerby at the grocery store,” the study states.

“When work became more isolated, people did not substantially compensate by socializing more outside of work hours, as also found elsewhere,” the report’s authors wrote. “As a result, the rise of remote work translated into large increases in overall time spent alone.”

Remote workers living alone experienced an even more pronounced rise in isolation, according to the research. That isolation in turn affects workers’ mental health, and accounts for some of the rise in mental distress across the U.S. between the pre- and post-COVID-19 pandemic periods, the study found.

For example, remote workers visited mental healthcare providers more frequently than non-remote workers and were more likely to rely on prescription psychiatric medication. By contrast, researchers did not observe a similar rise in use of other drugs, like statins for high cholesterol.

    Summary

    • The Pentagon revised its list of recognized religious affiliations for service members after criticism that Latter-day Saints were excluded from a list of Christian designations.
    • Some lawmakers including Senator Mike Lee, who is a Mormon, objected to the original list that labeled 21 faiths as Christian but not followers of the Mormon church.
    • Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s office adjusted the list so that faiths are not grouped.

AI-generated summary was reviewed by a CNN editor.

The Pentagon has updated its list of verified religious affiliations for service members used in HR systems and removed the “Christian” designation from several faiths after facing backlash over the weekend that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was not designated as Christian.

A list shared online last week by Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell formalized 31 religious categories that service members could identify as — 21 of which were identified as variations of Christianity. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was not identified as Christian, a fact immediately criticized by Mormon lawmakers including staunch Trump supporter Sen. Mike Lee.

“I think it’s very unfortunate that the Pentagon has chosen to identify basically every faith group in America that professes faith in Jesus Christ as Christian with one exception: that is those belonging to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints,” Lee said in a video posted online on Sunday. “I find this offensive, not just because that happens to be my faith and not just because it happens to be the faith of tens of thousands of US military personnel, but it’s also just repugnant to any sense of decency, any sense of our common heritage and our common belief that the government needs to not weigh in on doctrinal disputes between various religious denominations.”

Another Republican Utah lawmaker, Rep. Mike Kennedy, called the Pentagon’s list “wrong” and said it “needs to be corrected.”

Monday, the Pentagon released a second version of the list, which removed the “Christian” identifier from the various faiths and denominations.

“The Pentagon’s job is not to adjudicate theological debates, but instead to ensure sincerely-held faith is respected and encouraged in our ranks,” a post by the Pentagon’s rapid response account on X said.

Lee welcomed the updated list of religious codes on Monday, saying he was “grateful” to Hegseth “for correcting the error.”

The changes come as Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has vowed to overhaul to the military’s chaplain corps, saying in a video on social media in December that the chaplain corps has been “degraded” and “minimized” in recent decades. He announced the changes to the military’s religious codes in March this year, though the actual list itself wasn’t released at the time.

Hegseth said the number of codes used by service members to identify their faiths had “ballooned to well over 200 faith codes,” calling it “impractical and unusable.”

“Our internal review committee recommend that going forward the department use 31 religious affiliation codes,” Hegseth said. “This brings the codes in line with its original purpose, giving chaplains clear, usable information so they can minister to service members in a way that aligns with that service member’s faith background and religious practice.”

Nearly half of Americans say they’re worse off financially than a year ago, NY Fed finds

    2026-06-08 1:22 PM EDT / CBS News

    By Aimee Picchi

The U.S. economy may be holding up better than expected, but Americans are growing more pessimistic about their personal finances.

Roughly 48% of Americans said their financial situation was worse in May than a year ago, the highest share since January 2023, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of New York’s Survey of Consumer Expectations.

Consumers are also less optimistic about the future. The share of households expecting their finances to improve over the next year, relative to those expecting them to worsen, fell to its lowest level since October 2022, the New York Fed said.

The findings come amid an inflation spike driven by the Iran war, which has sent oil and gas prices soaring. The May Consumer Price Index, set to be released on Wednesday, is expected to show that the annual pace of inflation accelerated to 4.2% last month, according to financial data firm FactSet. That would mark the highest level in three years.

The survey also found growing public anxiety about the state of the labor market. About 15% of Americans said they believe they could lose their jobs within the next year, 0.5 percentage points above the series’ 12-month average. Meanwhile, confidence in finding a new job fell to its lowest level since December 2025.

Consumers have continued to spend despite financial pressures ranging from tariffs to higher gas prices, while hiring across the U.S. has picked up over the last three months. Even so, signs of financial strain are appearing as gas prices remain elevated, eating into household budgets.

For instance, wages rose at an annual rate of 3.4% in May, but inflation the previous month rose at an annualized 3.8%, eroding consumers’ purchasing power. Three-quarters of Americans said their wages aren’t keeping up with inflation, according to a recent CBS News poll.

Credit card delinquencies across the U.S. have also reached their highest level since 2011, when the economy was still recovering from the Great Recession, according to earlier data released by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. That jump signals that more consumers are struggling to meet their financial obligations.
