Trump’s most tone-deaf comments on Iran and the economy, ranked

    2026-06-10T21:52:48.440Z / CNN

    • President Donald Trump has repeatedly dismissed Americans’ economic pain and military casualties from the Iran war with comments critics call insensitive.
    • Most recently, Trump said “I love the inflation” as it surged above 4%, driven by the war in Iran.
    • He’s also said the increase in gas prices is “peanuts” and that he doesn’t think about Americans’ financial situation when negotiating with Iran.

On Tuesday morning, President Donald Trump responded to Iran downing a US Army Apache helicopter during a ceasefire by telling the Wall Street Journal that it “wasn’t a big deal.” About 24 hours later, he responded to inflation surging above 4% for the first time in three years by saying, “I love the inflation.”

The one-two punch of flippant comments epitomizes Trump’s increasingly tone-deaf approach to addressing Americans’ concerns about the Iran war and the economy.

Repeatedly in recent months, Trump has responded to Americans’ growing concerns not with empathy, but by pretending their pain didn’t exist — or that it was actually good.

And he’s now assembled a remarkable list of ham-fisted comments.

Below are some of the most prominent examples, ranked by how insensitive they were and how politically troubling they could be for Trump’s party ahead of November’s midterms.

Trump has often struggled to speak tactfully about the sacrifices of American troops, and that’s surely the case now that he’s personally sent them to war.

After the first three deaths in the Iran war were reported, Trump immediately seemed to insert the deaths into a cost-benefit analysis.

“We have three, but we expect casualties,” Trump told NBC News. “But in the end, it’s going to be a great deal for the world.”

In a later video, Trump seemed to ad-lib while talking about the deaths, saying, “That’s the way it is,” and wagering there would be more deaths.

Democrats quickly pilloried him for the quote.

Trump has occasionally suggested that rising oil prices are actually good because the US is producing more of it.

“The United States is the largest Oil Producer in the World, by far, so when oil prices go up, we make a lot of money,” Trump said on social media back in March.

Of course, certain people will benefit. But the vast majority of Americans don’t work in the oil industry, and thus the rising prices are a burden.

Trump last year repeatedly suggested that Americans dealing with rising prices in part due to tariffs could simply buy their children fewer dolls and/or pencils.

“Maybe the children will have two dolls instead of 30 dolls, you know,” he said in April 2025.

Trump later made a similar argument about pencils.

“You know, you can give up certain products,” he said. “You can give up pencils, because under the China policy, you know every child can get 37 pencils. They only need one or two.”

Trump’s populist political movement is supposed to be about helping the working class and pushing back on the moneyed interests, the fat cats and the globalist crowd that gathers for an annual economic conference in Davos, Switzerland.

But there he was in Davos in January, amid significant economic pains back home, bragging about his policies were enriching those assembled.

“I don’t even ask anybody how you’re doing now,” Trump told a gathering of CEOs. “It’s like everybody is making so much money.”

He added that “we’ve given you a platform where you can really put your genius to work.”

Trump also regaled them with stories about people making frivolous purchases with their newfound wealth.

Believe it or not, the incident with an Apache helicopter wasn’t the only time Trump has shrugged off, rhetorically at least, military action with Iran during the supposed ceasefire.

After Iran targeted US bases in Kuwait and Bahrain and Kuwait’s airport last week, Trump called it “not a big deal” and dismissed it as a legitimate retaliatory strike.

(Trump has frequently downplayed potential Iranian ceasefire violations, apparently in hopes of keeping the truce going and cutting a deal, although the US attacked Iran on Tuesday and he’s vowed further attacks Wednesday.)

Last month, Trump dismissed the increase in gas prices as “peanuts.”

“This is peanuts,” Trump told reporters. “I appreciate everybody putting up with it for a little while. It won’t be much longer.”

A recent Reuters-Ipsos poll showed nearly two-thirds of Americans said the increase in gas prices had affected their households’ finances at least “somewhat.”

Last year especially, Trump repeatedly pitched the concept of affordability as a “hoax” or a “scam.”

“It’s a con job,” Trump said at one point. “I think affordability is the greatest con job.”

It was often difficult to grasp Trump’s meaning, but he seemed to be suggesting Democrats were exaggerating the problem. Polls show Americans overwhelmingly believe affordability is a problem, though — and that Trump has neglected the issue.

Trump also at times suggested affordability was a concept that had just been created, or that he had never heard the term before. This despite him having campaigned on making things more affordable in 2024.

It paints a picture of a president not taking the issue seriously. And polling shows between two-thirds and three-quarters of Americans think Trump hasn’t.

You can bet Trump’s new comment will get plenty of attention going into the 2026 midterm elections.

When asked Wednesday about the highest inflation in three years — inflation spurred by rising energy costs due to the Iran war — Trump shot back that the “the numbers were great.”

    Trump: ‘I love the inflation’

President Donald Trump said “I love the inflation,” in remarks from the Oval Office, brushing off a spike in inflation driven by his war in Iran, saying that “the numbers were great,” adding, “I love it,” of the new data that showed annual inflation hitting a three-year high.

    0:52 • Source: CNN

    Trump: ‘I love the inflation’

    0:52

“I love it,” he said of new data. “I love the inflation.”

Trump might argue he wasn’t saying that inflation itself is good. It more seemed that he was arguing the data was somehow good. He argued that inflation would shoot down once the war was over.

But it was a pretty nonsensical argument — one that created an overwhelmingly dismissive soundbite. He could argue inflation is temporary, but almost nobody would say 4.2% inflation is actually good or something they “love.”

This still ranks at the top, because of how blunt it was and how directly it speaks to Trump’s abandonment of his former populism.

Trump was asked last month how much Americans’ concerns about the economic toll of the Iran war were motivating his push for a peace deal.

He responded that they motivated him “not even a little bit.”

“The only thing that matters when I’m talking about Iran [is] they can’t have a nuclear weapon,” Trump said. “I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation. I don’t think about anybody. I think about one thing: We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That’s all.”

One could argue that this is the right negotiating posture to have with Iran, at least when it comes to getting a deal — that telegraphing a lack of resolve hurts your leverage.

But the way Trump said it was brutal.

WATCH: Hearing turmoil as Jasmine Crockett unloads on MLK’s niece in wild racially-charged rant

The outgoing Texas Democrat called the GOP a ‘majority White’ party that parades the King name to confuse the public

Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, suggests Martin Luther King Jr’s niece Alveda is being used as a Republican prop during the SPLC hearing.

Rep. Jasmine Crockett erupted at Republicans, calling them a “majority… White” party and accusing them of using a member of Martin Luther King Jr.’s family as a prop to shield themselves from allegations of racism while interrogating the Southern Poverty Law Center’s funding of hate groups.

Crockett, who is leaving office next year after a failed Senate bid, lambasted Republicans for expressing outrage at the SPLC while not addressing the “literal elephant in the room” — a reference to Martin Luther King Jr.’s more conservative niece, Alveda King.

Crockett disparaged civil rights activist Alveda King as a right-wing prop while accusing Republicans of trying to trick the public into thinking a “Doctor King” was criticizing the SPLC’s work. King later questioned whether Crockett was calling her a “bastard” of the King name.

“The vast majority on that side of the aisle… are White men. White men are lecturing people of color because the vast majority, actually any semblance of diversity comes from this Democratic side of the aisle,” Crockett said.

She said people of color don’t feel welcome in the GOP and “that’s why you have to parade someone who has the name ‘Doctor King’ attached to them so people can be confused.”

Notably, GOP Rep. Wesley Hunt, a fellow Black Texan, was on the committee’s dais and pointedly questioned SPLC leader Bryan Fair earlier in the day. Hunt often rebukes talk of race-based partisanship by quipping that he has been “Black my entire life.”

Crockett said Republicans were hypocritical in accusing the SPLC of funding hate groups, citing a debunked assertion about President Donald Trump’s comments following the 2017 White supremacist rally in Charlottesville.

She noted Trump had said there were “fine people on both sides,” but omitted that he later clarified he was referring to a community group opposing the removal of Gen. Robert E. Lee’s statue, a gathering that occurred before the neo-Nazi violence erupted later that day.

Crockett then claimed people on social media were wondering who the “Doctor King” was who was speaking out against the SPLC as the hearing progressed, and that Republicans were trying to make the public think the historic Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. would be on their side.

NEARLY ALL SUSPECTS ARRESTED IN ST. PAUL CHURCH STORMING AS MLK’S NIECE SAYS TACTICS ‘NOT THE WAY’

Crockett said Republicans would be better served calling the Obama-supporting Martin Luther King III or his sister Bernice King to the hearing — suggesting they understand the civil rights icon’s teachings and positions better than Alveda.

Before her time expired, she accused King and Republicans of “caping” for murdered activist Charlie Kirk — quoting a controversial statement by the Turning Point USA founder about the Civil Rights Act.

She also claimed Republicans hauled Fair and King before the committee because they wanted to distract from their failure to hold a hearing examining associates of deceased financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

When House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, gaveled-out Crockett’s time and passed the floor to Rep. Russell Fry, R-S.C., the Republican gave King a chance to respond.

“I am a bit emotional,” King said of what Crockett had claimed. “I’m going to watch what I say.”

Crockett did not appear to look back at Alveda King and was briefly seen closing her notebook as she prepared to stand up.

US judge denies request to temporarily halt Trump’s abandoned ‘weaponization’ fund

WASHINGTON, June 10 (Reuters) – A U.S. judge on Wednesday blocked a request to temporarily halt President Donald Trump’s $1.8 billion “weaponization” fund, citing Justice Department statements and court filings that said ‌the administration was abandoning the fund.

Jumpstart your morning with the latest legal news delivered straight to your inbox from The Daily Docket newsletter. Sign up here.

    • U.S. District Judge Richard Leon ruled the request, made by Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, was moot because the government had made clear it was not moving forward with the fund, even as Trump has repeatedly said he loves the idea of creating a pool of money to pay supporters who say they are victims of government abuse. Leon called the case “highly unusual.”
    • The fund emerged from a settlement agreement between Trump and the Justice Department over the president’s $10 billion lawsuit against the IRS. Leon asked Justice Department attorney Andrew Block why department leaders would not formally rescind the fund. “I don’t know,” he ‌said.
    • Leon also asked Block to reckon with Trump’s statements of support for the fund and acting Attorney General Todd Blanche telling lawmakers the fund was not moving forward. Block argued the administration could view payouts and rectifying past government wrongs as important while also saying the fund would not move forward. “Don’t play possum with this court,” Leon told Block before ending the hearing.
    • The ruling does not affect a separate order from a federal judge in Virginia who issued a temporary halt to the fund last week. That temporary order is set to expire on Friday, when the judge in the case is scheduled to hear oral arguments.

    Summary

    • Federal authorities seized over a dozen websites allegedly used by suspected Chinese agents to recruit US officials with security clearances.
    • The FBI says the conspirators used fake consulting companies, AI-generated photos and identity theft to target former and current American officials.
    • It is unclear if any classified material was shared through the alleged recruitment scheme.

AI-generated summary was reviewed by a CNN editor.

Federal authorities have seized over a dozen websites they say were used by suspected Chinese agents to recruit former and current American officials with security clearances.

According to the FBI’s affidavit for the seizures, several unnamed people used the websites as a front for fake “consulting companies to recruit individuals in the United States to obtain sensitive and possibly classified information in exchange for monetary payments.”

The websites allegedly advertised for such positions as “International Affairs Analysts (Remote),” Defense Analyst, “Jobs for Ex-Military Personnel” as well as generic “consulting” positions.

The affidavit lists seven unnamed people who were recruited through the websites and says the recruiters asked for papers on various subjects including China and US relations, Iran and the Israel-Palestine war — all while pressing for insider or exclusive information.

The FBI believes the people running the alleged scheme, who were all located overseas, were acting “wittingly or unwittingly” on behalf of the Chinese government. In a press release Wednesday, the Justice Department noted the people running the websites “denied any involvement by any foreign government.”

The websites were paid for through cryptocurrency and foreign banks. It’s unclear if any classified material was ever shared through the alleged plot.

“The conspirators have also paid the various recruits at accounts located in the United States through payments originating from accounts located overseas,” the affidavit says.

The FBI says the conspirators used identify theft, AI-generated photos and videos and “relatively large payments for research reports” in their attempt to gain access to sensitive intel.

Last year, a report from the Naval Criminal Investigative Service alleged foreign actors were attempting to recruit federal employees and capitalize on the Trump administration’s plans for mass layoffs across various agencies, CNN reported at the time.

At least one foreign intelligence officer directed an asset to create a company profile on Linkedin and post a job advertisement, and to actively pursue federal employees who indicate they are “open to work,” the NCIS document reviewed by CNN said.

Targeted recruits, the FBI says, were hired through job postings related to topics of interest to the Chinese government on job search websites including LinkedIn, Upwork and other similar sites.

The conspirators allegedly copied information and photos from real companies overseas and used them on the scam websites, according to the affidavit.

One of the websites allegedly contained testimonials from the fictional cast of the Anchorman comedy movie, including Will Ferrell’s character Ron Burgundy and Steve Carell’s Brick Tamland.

Obama-appointed judge with ties to anti-Trump conspiracy theory hit with misconduct complaint

CASA argues Judge Christopher Cooper’s wife Amy Jeffress represents Biden in ongoing litigation against Trump

Trump says he is honored after Kennedy Center Board votes to rename it after him

President Donald Trump responds to the board members voting to rename performing arts center the ‘Trump-Kennedy Center.’

FIRST ON FOX: U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper is facing a judicial misconduct complaint from a conservative watchdog group, which argues he should have recused himself from a lawsuit involving President Donald Trump’s effort to rename the Kennedy Center.

The Center to Advance Security in America (CASA) alleged that Cooper should have bowed out of the case because his wife, Amy Jeffress, has a history of representing what the group described as “anti-Trump” clients. In May, Cooper ruled against Trump by permanently blocking the renaming of the Kennedy Center after Rep. Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio, filed a lawsuit.

CASA filed a complaint with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit on Wednesday, alleging Cooper failed to disclose or recuse himself despite what it called significant financial and professional interests stemming from his wife’s involvement in litigation against Trump.

“CASA is filing a judicial complaint against Obama-appointed DC District Court Judge Christopher Cooper for his potentially unethical behavior after his failure to recuse himself from the frivolous Kennedy Center lawsuit filed against President Trump, given his wife’s financial interests in opposing President Trump’s agenda through litigation,” CASA Director of Research and Policy Curtis Schube said in a statement.

The complaint comes more than a week after Trump slammed Cooper for having a “conflict of interest,” pointing to Cooper’s wife, Amy Jeffress’, track record of representing Trump’s biggest foes, including former anti-Trump FBI lawyer Lisa Page, and currently representing former President Joe Biden, who is suing Trump’s Justice Department over the release of Robert Hur’s interview recordings.

“Cooper’s wife is longtime Democrat activist and attorney Amy Jeffress. Jeffress is the former counsel to the January 6th committee, works as former President Biden’s personal lawyer, and currently represents Biden in ongoing litigation against President Trump,” Schube said. “There was a clear need for Cooper to recuse himself from this matter, or at the very least disclose these conflicts. By doing neither, Cooper caused — at the very least — an appearance of impropriety, which warrants a full investigation.”

The complaint does not challenge Cooper’s ruling itself, but it argues that his involvement in the case could raise reasonable questions about his ability to be impartial under the federal judiciary’s Code of Conduct.

JONATHAN TURLEY: TRUMP’S KENNEDY CENTER NAME CHANGE WILL KEEP LAWYERS BUSY FOR YEARS

“We are deeply concerned with the fact that a sitting federal judge did not recuse himself, and adjudicated to disposition, a case from which he and his spouse financially benefit,” the complaint states. “Indeed, a large portion of his wife’s business model appears to rely on handling litigation that is anti-Trump in nature.”

CASA argues that Cooper may have violated Canon 1, which requires judges to uphold the integrity and independence of the judiciary.

“Canon 1 requires that a judge uphold the integrity and independence of the judiciary,” the filing states. “Judge Cooper, presumably, goes home every night to his wife whose career is predicated on suing President Trump.”

CASA argued Cooper is in violation of Canon 2, which requires judges to avoid situations that could appear improper, even when no actual misconduct has occurred.

“More specifically, Canon 2 lists occasions when the appearance of a relationship affects a judge’s ability to adjudicate a case: 1) when public confidence is hampered; and 2) when spousal relationships influence judicial conduct,” the complaint stated. “Both problems are present here.”

The complaint also argues that Cooper violated Canon 3, which requires judges to remain fair and impartial and that recusal may be warranted when a judge’s spouse’s interests or potential partisan influences could reasonably raise questions about that impartiality.

The complaint concludes by urging the D.C. Circuit to investigate Cooper and determine whether disciplinary action is warranted.

Appointed by President Barack Obama, Cooper has served on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia in Washington, D.C., since 2014.

Cooper has long been the target of conflict of interest allegations from Trump and his allies. The judge drew scrutiny during Special Counsel John Durham’s prosecution of former Clinton campaign-linked attorney Michael Sussmann, which was a part of Durham’s broader probe into the FBI’s Crossfire Hurricane investigation centered on the now-debunked Russian-Trump collusion theory.

Critics argued then that he should have recused himself because his wife, attorney Amy Jeffress, represented former FBI lawyer Lisa Page, a figure tied to the FBI’s Crossfire Hurricane investigation.

Fox News Digital reached out to Cooper and Jeffress for comment.

    • Summary
    • Agencies are prohibiting ‘racially discriminatory DEI’
    • But they haven’t explained what that means, 20 states say
    • Trump orders call for DEI bar in government, private sector

June 10 (Reuters) – Democratic state officials filed a lawsuit on Wednesday claiming federal agencies have flouted the law by hastily implementing President Donald Trump’s executive order that seeks to eliminate diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives by federal contractors including many state agencies.

The lawsuit, opens new tab in Baltimore federal ‌court by the attorneys general of 19 states and Washington, D.C., claims that more than two dozen federal agencies are adding new terms to federal contracts barring “any racially discriminatory DEI activities” without notice or explaining exactly what is prohibited.

Jumpstart your morning with the latest legal news delivered straight to your inbox from The Daily Docket newsletter. Sign up here.

Trump directed agencies to adopt those new terms in a March executive order, part of his broader efforts to eradicate DEI initiatives.

Groups representing university faculty and minority business owners filed a lawsuit in the same court in April claiming Trump’s order violates contractors’ free-speech rights under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. They have moved for a preliminary injunction that would block Trump’s order pending the outcome of the case.

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell in a statement said that the Trump administration was ignoring its obligations under federal law to make headlines about eliminating diversity efforts.

“This is yet another example of haphazard actions designed to confuse and intimidate rather than provide clear guidance to people and businesses — in this case federal contractors,” Campbell said. She was joined in the lawsuit by her counterparts in California, Illinois and New Jersey, among other states.

The White House and the U.S. Department of Justice did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The lawsuit says state agencies regularly contract with the federal government and the states involved in the case collectively hold billions of dollars in existing contracts. Trump’s order could affect up to 640,000 contracts and subcontracts with over 34,000 unique contractors nationwide, according to federal estimates cited by Campbell’s office.

The state officials allege that the federal agencies implementing Trump’s order ‌have violated the federal Administrative Procedure Act by acting in an arbitrary and capricious manner and failing to seek public comment before adding language from Trump’s order to federal contracts, and are seeking to block them from imposing the new contract terms.

Civil rights advocates say DEI practices help address historic inequities for marginalized groups like women, LGBTQ people and racial and ethnic minorities. Trump and many conservatives argue that DEI is discriminatory against groups like white people and men and impedes merit-based decision-making.

Trump since last year has issued a series of orders aimed at eliminating DEI programs from the federal government, higher education, government contractors and grant recipients. He also repealed an executive order issued by Democratic former President Lyndon Johnson in 1965 requiring federal contractors to take affirmative action to hire minorities and women.

The case is Maryland v. Hegseth, U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, No. 1:26-cv-02322.

For the states: James Luh of the Maryland Attorney General’s Office; Alexis Piazza of the California Attorney General’s Office; Paul Berks of the Illinois Attorney General’s Office; and others

America’s birth rate has plunged. Are smartphones to blame?

    2026-06-10 17:27:23 EDT / CBS News

    By

A decades-long decline in the U.S. fertility rate has confounded policymakers and economists alike, with experts pointing to possible causes ranging from the economic fallout of the Great Recession to changing public attitudes about parenthood. Now, one economist is pointing to another factor: the iPhone.

A new research paper by Middlebury College economist Caitlin Myers found that Apple’s 2007 introduction of the iPhone accounted for 33% to 52% of the decline in the fertility rate. The reasons are rooted in the enormous social impact of putting a powerful new device in people’s pockets that not only tethered them to the internet but also rewired how we relate to each other — or whether we choose to relate at all.

Specifically, Myers posits that many people have turned to their phones as a substitute for in-person interactions. The technology also makes it easier to view pornography and find information on contraception, factors that have weighed on birth rates, according to the paper.

“What we are seeing is that the places that have the iPhone have big fertility changes relative to the other places,” Myers told CBS News.

The findings rely on a natural experiment created by the iPhone’s exclusive distribution through AT&T from its rollout in 2007 through 2011. That allowed Myers to compare birth rates in U.S. counties with widespread AT&T coverage — and, therefore, access to iPhones — with those in regions with minimal access to the carrier’s service.

Myers told CBS News she wanted to check whether the results might reflect that AT&T’s coverage areas, which were focused in urban areas, were harder hit by the 2008 financial crisis. To do that, she ran several statistical checks, controlling for economic and demographic factors, and found that the iPhone effect remained consistent.

“I said, ‘Wow, but this has to be too big,’” she recalled. “I was like, ‘Let me try everything I can to explain away what I’m seeing in the data,’ and I just couldn’t.”

She added, “I’m not surprised that there is an effect. I am surprised that it stands out so, so clearly.”

    Not the only factor

The declining U.S. birth rate could also be due to several other factors. Experts trying to explain the trend often cite financial issues, such as the high cost of child care, and the fact that more women are delaying having children or opting not to start a family.

Meanwhile, population growth has been slowing worldwide for decades in both rich and poor countries, not only in the U.S., according to economists.

Myers readily acknowledged that her research suggests that the iPhone only partially explains the drop.

“We’re not saying it’s all the iPhone. What we are saying is that it is a really important factor to consider,” she said. “Over this short period of time, it could explain about a third to a half of the decline. Now that leaves about half to two-thirds unexplained.”

The Trump administration has encouraged Americans to have more children and floated ideas such as a “baby bonus” for new parents. It has also introduced a new tax-deferred investment vehicle for U.S. children, offering federal government contributions of up to $1,000 to eligible kids.

Other countries have also introduced financial incentives to convince people to have more children, yet those efforts have largely failed to move the needle. Even countries that offer generous parental programs, like Norway, have seen their birth rates continue to decline over the past two decades.

    A slow-moving crisis

Myers thinks the drop in birth rates is unlikely to be reversed solely through economic policy, such as tax incentives. And efforts to convince people to spend less time on their phones and more time making social connections “in real life” have mostly failed to gain traction, though more states are implementing cell phone restrictions for school-age children.

The possible link between how Americans use technology and birth rates has broader economic ramifications. On Tuesday, the Social Security Administration said the federal program is at risk of exhausting its trust fund as soon as 2023. Several factors — including the declining birth rate — are contributing to the approaching funding shortfall, according to the agency.

“It’s a real concern for economic growth to have a population with fertility below replacement levels,” Myers said. “We have a system set up where current workers support older retirees, and if we have fewer and fewer current workers, that becomes more and more difficult.”

‘Residual algae’ coats part of newly opened Reflecting Pool

    Summary

    • A day after the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool was filled following $14.2 million renovations, algae was visible coating parts of the bottom.
    • An Interior Department official says the algae is residual from supply lines and part of the normal startup process for the pool.
    • The Trump administration has promoted the project while residents and tourists offered mixed reviews on whether the renovations were worth the cost.

AI-generated summary was reviewed by a CNN editor.

The Trump administration has spent days heavily promoting the finished renovations at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, crediting the president with making Washington, DC, look “better than ever.”

But a day after the reservoir was filled post renovations, there was already quite a bit of algae visible from the water’s edge.

CNN spotted a worker clearing the algae from the bottom of the recently filled pool while shooting a video on Wednesday. Asked for comment, an Interior Department spokesperson said the algae is “residual” and a normal part of the early process of restarting operations at the Reflecting Pool.

“What you are seeing is residual algae from the supply lines, which have been sitting dormant for eight weeks while construction has been taking place. It’s part of the normal startup process. We are removing the algae, and the nanobubblers will maintain the pool and keep it algae free,” communications director Kate Martin said in a statement.

“President Donald J. Trump is an expert builder who has fixed the Reflecting Pool for good unlike the failed and extremely costly attempt by Obama and Biden,” she added.

Martin said that the National Park Service invested in “a state-of-the-art ozone nanobubbler filtration system” that is intended to keep algae out.

The Trump administration has been touting the newly renovated Reflecting Pool, and Trump himself has repeatedly bragged about the $14.2 million pet project in public remarks recently — including to farmers in Wisconsin and in multiple unrelated events in the Oval Office. Previously, he would disparage the state of the Reflecting Pool, saying it was feces-infested and in disrepair. He contended that previous administrations failed to repair leaks and other problems.

“The water is ON, the Reflecting Pool is reflecting, and D.C. is looking better than ever,” the White House X account posted last week, before the pool had finished filling with water.

The reflecting pool is refilled after being repainted at the directive of President Donald Trump ahead of America 250 on June 4, 2026 in Washington, DC.

    Olivier Douliery/Abaca Press/Sipa USA/AP

The Interior Department provided the statement after CNN sent videos of the algae. Initially, the spokesperson said the Fish and Wildlife Service wasn’t convinced it was algae before explaining that it was “residual algae.”

A department official said they would have a firmer timeline tomorrow on when the residual algae will be removed, adding that they didn’t want to speculate on timing due to the rain.

The cost of the renovations has gradually ticked upward. The president had initially said the renovation would cost $1.8 million, but that went up to $13.1 million before seemingly settling at $14.2 million.

“I originally thought I’d do it for $2 or $3 million,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “Just do a base. But now we are fixing up the exterior of it so we will probably be in it for less than $20 million.”

According to a contract summary under the Obama administration, the cost for renovations to the Reflecting Pool at the time was $35.3 million.

Residents and tourists around the reflecting pool Wednesday morning offered mixed reviews on the renovations, including the “American flag blue” paint newly coating the bottom.

“I needed to come down to see if it was actually reflecting, and it wasn’t bright blue. And I’m impressed, to be honest. It reflects beautifully,” said Lara Harvey, who is from New Zealand but has lived in Bethesda the last 10 years. “I was expecting a swimming pool. I was expecting swimming pool blue, but I’m really surprised.”

Marcus Tate, who lives in Alexandria and had spotted the algae said, “DC is already a beautiful place” and criticized the administration for spending money on unnecessary upkeep and not doing more to help the homeless.

And Kyra Brown, a DC resident, was skeptical that the renovations were worth it. Looking at the renovation from the steps beyond the pool, she said, “It doesn’t look that much different, honestly, to me.”

CNN’s Abigail Roedersheimer contributed to this report.
