Trump promises a better Iran deal than Obama’s. Here’s what we know

    2026-06-15T21:39:07.401Z / CNN

President Donald Trump promises his Iran deal will surpass President Barack Obama’s 2015 nuclear agreement.
The new memorandum of understanding halts hostilities and reopens the Strait of Hormuz for 60 days of negotiations.
Obama predicted Trump’s eventual agreement would not differ significantly from the deal Trump abandoned in his first term.

AI-generated summary was reviewed by a CNN editor.

A version of this story appeared in CNN’s What Matters newsletter. To get it in your inbox, sign up for free here.

President Donald Trump has made a few guarantees about a deal to end the war he started with Iran.

They frequently include two main points:

    1. It will ensure that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon
    1. Trump’s deal will be better than President Barack Obama’s

Trump keeps coming back to that that second point.

Here he is in a post on his social media platform Sunday:

“The Obuma Deal was a road to a Nuclear weapon for Iran, cash and all, one of the worst and dumbest (hence Dumocrats!) Deals ever made by the U.S. Our Deal is a WALL against Iran ever having a Nuclear weapon, the complete opposite of Obuma.”

The misspellings of Obama’s name and the Democratic Party appear to be intentional digs by Trump. And the deal he’s referring to — technically called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA — was negotiated and signed in July of 2015 by Iran with the US, the European Union, China, Russia, France, the United Kingdom and Germany.

Asked Monday when the public might see text of his agreement with Iran, which has not yet been released, Trump went straight back to Obama.

“It’s not like the Obama document, which was just a terrible document,” Trump said, sitting alongside French President Emmanuel Macron during a trip to France. “This is a very powerful document, and I want it to be released. So probably pretty soon.”

Obama has also been asked in recent weeks to compare his own Iran efforts with Trump’s. The prediction from Obama is that whatever Trump achieves will be very similar to the JCPOA, which Trump tore up in his first term.

“It is doubtful that any agreement that arises is going to be significantly different or a significant improvement from the deal that we had in the first place,” Obama told ABC’s Robin Roberts in an interview that aired Monday.

Obama used that comparison to criticize Trump’s bombastic foreign policy and said the same ends could have been accomplished through diplomacy.

“The notion that we can just bully our way or bomb our way to solutions may sometimes seem appealing, but the fact of the matter is, is that taking the time to explore diplomacy and exhaust the possibilities of coming up with deals that don’t solve 100% of the problem, but solve 80, 90% of the problem, while avoiding the necessity of going to war,” Obama said. “You’d think we would have learned that lesson by now, but it seems like every so often we have to relearn that lesson again.”

The agreement announced Sunday has not yet been publicly released, so it is impossible to say how exactly it stacks up against the JCPOA. One indicator is that the JCPOA was a detailed, 18-page agreement – read it here. Trump’s agreement, a “memorandum of understanding,” is “about a page and a half,” Vice President JD Vance told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Monday.

More importantly, the new MOU is not a long-term nuclear deal, but rather an agreement to halt the war and negotiate for 60 days. A longer-term agreement could result from those negotiations, but is not guaranteed.

And finally, it’s hard to draw comparisons since the Obama JCPOA — which was actually a deal between Iran and a large group of countries including the US — is from a much different time.

Back in 2015, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear program. International monitors verified that Iran was complying and Iran was able to tap its oil wealth.

Trump withdrew the US from the JCPOA in 2018. Iran subsequently also withdrew from the agreement and then kickstarted its enrichment of uranium.

So any part of a successful Trump deal would necessarily include either the downgrading of uranium Iran enriched after the JCPOA’s demise or the taking of that uranium out of Iran. Trump has talked about the need to remove the “nuclear dust.”

Iran has gained a new bargaining chip, which is tanker traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Choking the world’s oil supply was not part of negotiations between Iran and signatories of the JCPOA.

Rather than a multilateral international and long-term agreement like the one Obama entered into, the new agreement would stop hostilities between the countries and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The US will reportedly stop its blockade of Iranian ports, and Iran will allow shipping traffic through the strait.

Vance, who has taken a lead role for the US on reaching the deal with Iran and will apparently be the US official on hand to sign it in Geneva, Switzerland, on Friday, gave more details on the Iran deal during an interview on CNBC Monday.

He said there would be a two-step process by which the US would verify that Iran had abandoned its nuclear program in exchange for being allowed to tap into its oil wealth and join the world economy.

“That’s fundamentally the two-step process, the choice the Iranians have to make,” Vance said. “Do they want access to the world economy? If so, they’re going to have to give up the long-term nuclear ambition.”

He added that the US has already largely destroyed Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

The US end of that agreement is to allow Iran access to money, which will be sort of awkward since Trump frequently complains – and misstates facts – about the truth that the Obama-era deal gave lifted some sanctions on Iran, giving the country access to billions of dollars in exchange for limiting its nuclear program.

A Trump deal would have to do the same, enticing Iran to limit or abandon its nuclear program in exchange for lifting sanctions. Iranian leaders have said they could get access to $24 billion during the 60-day negotiating period the interim deal would kick off.

Vance denied that figure is accurate during an interview with CBS News on Sunday, but he acknowledged that a larger agreement could mean many more billions for the regime. There appears to be some disagreement between Iranian and US officials over the unfrozen assets. In any event, Iran wants to unlock billions of dollars.

“What we have said is that we’re willing to talk about unfreezing assets, but a much, much bigger deal is unsanctioning their economy — so long as they make the long-term commitments on the nuclear program,” Vance said.

But again, any comparisons are premature since the current agreement is an agreement to talk for another 60 days.

“It doesn’t actually resolve anything,” said Kurt Volker, the former US ambassador to NATO, during an appearance Monday on CNN. “It’s a temporary memorandum of understanding to set the stage for new negotiations.”

Volker made predictions for the coming negotiations.

“Iran is going to very strenuously try to cling to a nuclear enrichment program, to storage of enriched uranium,” he said, adding, “And they want to assert some kind of control over the Strait of Hormuz going forward.”

There are ways to improve upon the JCPOA, Volker said, including better limits on Iran’s right to enrich uranium and a better system by which the International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA, verifies that Iran is living up to its commitments not to pursue a nuclear weapon.

Those are details to watch, Volker said.

“But I suspect that we’re nowhere near there. All we’re hearing right now is that they’re committing not to have a nuclear weapon, which is what they’ve said all along. So I’m not sure that we’ve seen much (that’s) different yet,” he said.

US Supreme Court rebuffs challenge to New York law allowing lawsuits against gun industry

June 15 (Reuters) – The U.S. Supreme Court turned away on Monday a gun industry challenge to a New York law that permits lawsuits against gun makers, wholesalers and dealers for endangering people’s safety through sales of firearms and ammunition.

The justices declined to hear an ‌appeal by an industry trade group, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, of a lower court ruling upholding the law, which New York calls a public nuisance statute.

    RGR.N, opens new tab
, Beretta, Glock, Sig Sauer and Sturm joined the appeal, which argued that New York’s law unconstitutionally conflicted with federal law.

The law requires the gun industry to use reasonable safeguards to protect against gun trafficking, theft and the use of “straw purchasers” who buy firearms for someone else. It also allows civil lawsuits by New York state and local officials as well as members of the public.

The Supreme Court in 2025 spared Smith & Wesson from a lawsuit by Mexico’s government accusing the company of aiding illegal gun trafficking to drug cartels.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation trade group expressed disappointment that the Supreme Court decided not to hear its appeal.

“NSSF sincerely believes that those criminals who illegally misuse lawful products should be held responsible for the harms they cause when they commit their crimes,” spokesperson Mark Oliva said in an email. “Holding the firearm industry responsible for the criminal misuse of a firearm is akin to holding Anheuser-Busch and Ford Motor Company responsible for damages from drunk-driving crimes.”

Letitia James, New York’s Democratic attorney general, defended the law in court, and New York’s Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul called the outcome “a massive victory” in efforts to reduce gun violence. The law was signed in 2021 by Hochul’s predecessor, Democrat Andrew Cuomo.

“The gun lobby fought tooth and nail against this first-in-the-nation law,” Hochul said in a statement. “New York will not allow gun ‌manufacturers to profit from tragedy.”

    ‘CRUSHING’ LIABILITY FEARED

The National Shooting Sports Foundation said the law was preempted by a 2005 federal law, the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, that shields the gun industry from civil liability when its products are used in crimes. Under the U.S. Constitution’s Supremacy Clause, federal laws take precedence over conflicting state laws.

The Manhattan-based 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld New York’s law last year.

Circuit Judge Eunice Lee, an appointee of Democratic former President Joe Biden, wrote that Congress intended to preserve “at least some causes of action” when a defendant’s knowing violation of federal or state firearms sales and marketing laws was a proximate cause of harm.

The appeal did not hinge on the Constitution’s Second Amendment protections of the right to keep and bear arms. But the trade group said laws such as New York’s imperil such rights by allowing lawsuits that could saddle companies with “crushing liability” for crimes they had nothing to do with.

It also said a “predicate exception” in the federal law at issue subjected the industry to liability only for failures to comply with specific obligations or prohibitions within its control.

New York said the predicate exception allowed liability for some “downstream acts” of third parties. It also said at least nine states have passed laws to satisfy the exception.

The appeal was supported by the National Rifle Association, 24 Republican state attorneys general and several dozen Republican members of Congress.

The Supreme Court has expanded gun rights in three major decisions since 2008, when it found that the Second Amendment conferred an individual right to keep and bear arms.

    2026-06-15T20:01:42.531Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/15/politics/jeffrey-epstein-victims-comer-meeting-doj

Epstein survivors push Comer to investigate potential leads from DOJ’s files in private meeting

    2026-06-15T20:01:42.531Z / https://www.cnn.com/2026/06/15/politics/jeffrey-epstein-victims-comer-meeting-doj

In a private meeting last week, a group of survivors of Jeffrey Epstein’s abuse and family members of the late Virginia Giuffre pointed House Oversight Chair James Comer to allegations from the Justice Department’s Epstein files to further investigate, arguing that acting Attorney General Todd Blanche’s suggestion there were no more leads to pursue in the case is not true.

The group brought documents from DOJ’s released Epstein files – an email detailing a list of men from the late convicted sex offender’s orbit, as well as Giuffre’s 2015 testimony to investigators – to help the Republican chairman refine his own probe and to argue there are allegations against powerful men that the Justice Department could pursue.

The private meeting between the survivors and the House Oversight Committee provides a fresh window into the back channeling between the two groups and the pressure the survivors are applying as they seek accountability as the investigation into the late convicted sex offender and his orbit has largely stalled under Blanche.

The survivors presented Comer a partially redacted set of emails from July 2025 that showed FBI officials were aware of an email discussing building out a spreadsheet of allegations against more than a dozen men.

“Take these names and build out new spreadsheet w all the derog on them,” a redacted individual says in one of the emails on the chain, referring to the list of 14 men.

That list includes some who have previously testified to the committee – like Bill Clinton and Les Wexner – and other high-profile names – such as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor and President Donald Trump – who have not appeared before the panel. A CNN review of the public Epstein files revealed that agents started to gather allegations for each of the 14 men named later that same day.

Clinton and Wexner, who have appeared before the committee for videotaped and transcribed interviews, have each denied any wrongdoing and knowledge of Epstein’s crimes. CNN has reached out to Mountbatten-Windsor, who has also vehemently denied any and all wrongdoing in his dealings with Epstein.

Trump has consistently denied wrongdoing related to Epstein, and White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told CNN Monday that “just as President Trump has said, he’s been totally exonerated on anything relating to Epstein. And by releasing thousands of pages of documents, cooperating with the House Oversight Committee’s subpoena request, signing the Epstein Files Transparency Act, and calling for more investigations into Epstein’s Democrat friends, President Trump has done more for Epstein’s victims than anyone before him.”

It was not immediately clear from the files what the FBI and DOJ did to pursue the outlined allegations for the 14 men. The women in the meeting disputed Blanche’s claims – including to CNN’s Dana Bash in February and to FOX in April – that there was nothing in the files that would lead to prosecution and that the files should not be part of cases brought by the current Justice Department.

CNN has reached out to the DOJ, FBI, and representatives of the other men for comment on the email exchange and testimony provided to Comer.

Comer soon acted on at least some of the information provided to him by the survivors.

After meeting with them, the Republican chairman announced he would ask attorney Alan Dershowitz to testify in the panel’s probe. “Due to public reporting, documents released by the Department of Justice, documents obtained by the Committee, and your former role as Mr. Epstein’s attorney, the Committee believes you have information that will assist in its investigation,” the panel said in its request.

A spokesperson for the committee told CNN that “based on information provided by Epstein survivors and testimony from Ms. Groff, Chairman Comer is requesting that Alan Dershowitz appear for a videotaped, transcribed interview.”

Dershowitz, who has long publicly maintained he has never done anything wrong or illegal related to Epstein or his victims, told CNN on Monday: “I did absolutely nothing wrong. That’s why I volunteered to testify.”

Dershowitz was part of the legal team that negotiated Epstein’s controversial 2008 plea deal. In 2022, Giuffre agreed to drop allegations she made against Dershowitz, which he consistently denied, saying she “may have made a mistake” when she also accused him of sexual abuse.

Giuffre’s family members also took Comer excerpts from their late sister’s 2015 deposition in which she named men she said Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell trafficked her to.

The cloud of the Epstein files continues to hang over the Trump administration, even as the Justice Department has maintained in recent months that there is nothing left to investigate.

As CNN reported, a group of Epstein survivors came out in opposition to Blanche’s nomination as Trump’s permanent attorney general in the wake of New York Times reporting that Blanche participated in secret White House meetings on how to contain the political fallout from the Epstein files.

The House Oversight Committee, meanwhile, has conducted at least 15 interviews as part of its ongoing Epstein probe including the Clintons, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Bill Gates and key members of Epstein’s inner circle.

Trump admin puts alleged ‘birth tourism’ scheme on notice as expert delivers warning to hospitals

    June 15, 2026 7:35pm EDT / Fox News

Foreign nationals allegedly used false documents and ‘fixers’ to secure US visas for giving birth on American soil

    By Alec Schemmel, Fox News

The Trump administration is using visa enforcement to target “birth tourism,” an alleged scheme utilized by foreign nationals to obtain visitor visas for the primary purpose of giving birth in the U.S. and securing American citizenship for their children.

The Trump administration recently announced that it disrupted “a sophisticated birth tourism network” in West Africa involving more than 100 foreign nationals utilizing false documents and, what the State Department described as “fixers,” to get themselves visas to go to the United States to give birth so their children would be born on U.S. soil and treated as American citizens.

But that was just one of the networks the State Department indicated it had uncovered. The agency’s announcement said U.S. officials identified more than 400 suspected birth tourism cases emanating from Europe since 2024, and tied to at least six companies that helped coach applicants on what to say during their visa interview, arranged housing and set-up delivery plans.

“We shut it down, revoked these foreign nationals’ visas, and are coordinating with local authorities to systematically identify and cut off any similar operations,” the State Department said in its announcement. “A U.S. visa is a privilege, not a right. The State Department is taking action around the world to stop this abuse, dismantle birth tourism networks, and hold accountable those who try to scam our system.”

The effort comes as Trump has renewed his long-running criticism of birthright citizenship, including through a 2025 executive order seeking to narrow who is automatically treated as a U.S. citizen at birth. It also builds on a first-term Trump administration rule from 2020 that instructed consular officers to deny visitor visas to foreign nationals believed to be traveling to the U.S. primarily to give birth and obtain American citizenship for their children.

“President Trump will always put the American people first. Uninhibited birth tourism poses a tremendous cost to taxpayers and threatens our national security,” White House spokesperson Anna Kelly told Fox News Digital. “The Trump administration is effectively ending this practice, which brings the United States in line with the policy of most countries around the world.”

TRUMP LOCKS IN ICE FUNDING THROUGH END OF PRESIDENCY AFTER HOUSE PASSES $70B PACKAGE

Federation for American Immigration Reform’s Ira Mehlman noted to Fox News Digital that visa fraud is “a significant issue,” pointing out it is a problem even outside the framework of birth tourism.

“The prospect of birthright citizenship is undeniably an inducement for people to commit visa fraud,” Mehlman said. “Birth tourism would not exist otherwise.”

“Obviously, any woman who does not disclose her intention to have her baby in the U.S. when she applies for a visa is committing fraud. Remove the incentive of automatic birthright citizenship for people who are not citizens and legal permanent residents, and the reason for committing this sort of fraud goes away,” he continued.

Birth tourism has surfaced repeatedly in the U.S. in recent years, particularly through operations accused of coaching foreign nationals to obscure the purpose of their travel.

In California, federal prosecutors secured convictions against the operators of USA Happy Baby, a company accused of helping Chinese women travel to the U.S. to give birth to American-citizen children, while a separate operator from a business called You Win USA pleaded guilty in another case stemming from a broader federal crackdown.

Mehlman urged Congress to do more to enhance vetting of visa applicants, prosecute those who commit fraud and put an end to birth tourism. He said there were avenues for legal action against the entities allegedly facilitating the scheme.

“To the extent that we can take legal action against companies that are outside the United States, we should, much like we prosecute other types of transnational crime and fraud operations,” Mehlman told Fox News Digital. “But each one of these companies works with service providers here in the U.S., including hospitals.”
