Trump’s court setbacks fail to blunt his campaign against media

President targets Jimmy Kimmel in latest anti‑media salvo
Trump has filed at least nine media lawsuits since 2020
Courts repeatedly rule against Trump on First Amendment grounds
But appeals and outside pressure blunt media wins

NEW YORK, April 29 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump has suffered a string of courtroom setbacks in his battles with the American media, but the rulings have done little to blunt a broader campaign of pressure and retaliation that extends beyond the press.

Courts have consistently sided with news organizations, rejecting Trump’s defamation lawsuits and blocking efforts by his administration to limit press access or defund public media, citing the robust free-speech protections ‌guaranteed by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

But slow-moving litigation and multi-layered appeals have worked in favor of an administration that acts quickly, tests legal boundaries and shifts tactics after defeats.

Trump’s clash with ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel reflects a pressure campaign that extends beyond the courts. Even as judges affirm media protections, Trump demands firings and urges regulatory scrutiny, pressing companies outside formal legal channels.

    TRUMP SEEN TO SLOW-WALK LITIGATION

“Trump can repeatedly lose individual court battles but still advance his broader agenda of weakening and destabilizing the press,” said Christina Koningisor, a professor at UC Law San Francisco, citing what she described as Trump’s strategy of slow-walking litigation.

A spokesman for Trump’s personal lawyers said the president would continue to pursue accountability for what he calls false reporting and defamatory claims. Separately, a White House spokesperson described Trump as the most open and accessible U.S. president ever, saying his administration has broadened press access in unprecedented ways.

Trump has filed at least nine lawsuits against major media companies since 2020, seeking tens of billions of dollars in damages for what he alleges are false or misleading reports.

Separately, his administration has acted to restrict press access to government agencies and threatened to use regulatory powers against critical outlets, drawing legal challenges by media outlets.

Trump’s latest setback came on April 13, when a judge threw out his $10 billion defamation lawsuit against the Wall Street Journal and its parent company Dow Jones over a story describing a birthday letter to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein bearing Trump’s signature.

U.S. District Judge Darrin Gayles said the complaint fell “nowhere close” to plausibly alleging the Journal knowingly published false information or recklessly disregarded the truth — the “actual malice” standard that makes defamation claims by public figures difficult to win.

Gayles nevertheless has allowed Trump to file a revised complaint, meaning Dow Jones could still face a costly and time-consuming court battle defending what it says was accurate reporting. Trump’s lawyers say they will file a revised suit.

Should the case survive another bid for dismissal, the subsequent discovery, trial and appeals could take years.

Trump’s 2022 lawsuit against CNN over its coverage of his false claims of election-rigging was tossed out in 2023. An appeals court upheld the ruling, but Trump could still seek Supreme Court review.

“The way our legal system works, ‌it can cost a lot of time and money, and the president is able to take advantage of that,” said Tre Lovell, a defamation law specialist.

SETTLEMENTS UNDERSCORE COST OF PROLONGED LEGAL FIGHTS

Two media companies have settled defamation suits brought by Trump that were deemed meritless by legal experts but could have been costly to fight in court.

ABC agreed to donate $15 million to Trump’s presidential library after he sued over inaccurate on-air comments about a civil case in which a jury found him liable for sexual abuse. CBS reached a similar settlement after Trump sued over edits to an interview with his 2024 election rival Kamala Harris.

Neither company admitted wrongdoing, though ABC agreed to apologize and said it regretted anchor George Stephanopoulos’ on-air description of the civil judgment.

Critics of the CBS deal said its parent, Paramount, may have settled to smooth the way to regulatory approval of its $8.4 billion merger with Skydance Media, which the Federal Communications Commission granted shortly afterward.

More broadly, challenges to Trump administration actions can be slow and costly, and even courtroom victories for the press have at times proved fleeting, stalled by appeals or arriving too late to have an impact.

COURT VICTORIES BUT WITH LIMITED CONSEQUENCES

In the last month, judges have blocked a Trump executive order cutting off federal funds for public broadcasting, reversed his attempts to dismantle the government-run Voice of America and twice invalidated Pentagon press access rules as unconstitutional.

In each case, courts said the Trump administration violated First Amendment prohibitions by discriminating against media outlets based on viewpoint.

But an administration willing to test legal limits and swiftly appeal losses has managed repeatedly to outmaneuver a judicial process that is slow and deliberative.

National Public Radio sued in May 2025 to block Trump’s executive order eliminating federal broadcasting funds. When U.S. District Judge Randolph Moss ruled for NPR last month, the agency that once financed it no longer existed, its funding exhausted by Trump’s actions and parallel moves by his Republican allies in Congress.

Voice of America won court relief on March 18, nearly a year after its journalists sued to block its dismantling.

Courts remain essential to protecting press freedom but cannot serve as the sole check on abuses, said First Amendment attorney Doug Mirell.

“Trump’s campaign against the media is one that is so multifaceted that the judicial efforts to control him are insufficient,” Mirell said.

What the Fed has seen about the war’s impact on the economy so far

    • Summary
    • Labor market shows minimal impact from war, jobless claims steady
    • Inflation rises sharply, mainly due to gasoline prices; core measures less affected
    • Growth outlook uncertain, retail sales and some manufacturing indicators up, but industrial output down

April 29 (Reuters) – Federal Reserve officials last met just over two weeks into the U.S.-led war on Iran and then had little data at their disposal beyond surging gasoline prices to assess its impact on the economy and the outlook for interest rates.

As they meet again this week, the data over the past six weeks has not done much to sharpen that picture, especially on the ‌topics most critical to their policymaking like the job market, inflation and overall activity.

Here’s a snapshot of what figures were available to them since the war’s start when they met in mid-March and how those have evolved since.

    EMPLOYMENT

The job market has shown almost no visible imprint from the war so far. Headline job growth figures have been distorted by one-time factors, such as a healthcare strike in California and bad weather, so have provided little signal. The jobless rate ticked lower in March but largely because of a decline in the workforce. Layoff activity as indicated by weekly reports on new claims for unemployment benefits – the most timely window into the state of the job market – has shown almost no change through eight readings over the course of the war so far, six of which have come in since Fed officials last met.

    INFLATION

Headline inflation readings have shot higher since the war’s onset, led by gasoline prices climbing by roughly a third to crest the $4-a-gallon mark on a national average. Measures such as the Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index have shown prices accelerating by the most in three to four years. Stripping out food and especially energy costs shows broader price-growth pressures to be somewhat less aggravated so far.

The Fed has yet, however, to see a formal wartime reading of the Personal Consumption Expenditures price index that it uses to set its 2% inflation target and will not see a report for March, the first full month of the conflict, until Thursday, a day after this week’s meeting adjourns. But estimates based off the CPI and PPI readings suggest it has moved further above target since the war began at both the headline and core level.

Manufacturing input costs, which had soared in February according to the Institute for Supply Management’s benchmark monthly survey of purchasing managers, rose to a new three-and-a-half-year high in March.

Fed officials worry that the longer prices stay elevated – especially for products as influential as gasoline in shaping consumers’ outlooks for price changes – risks may grow that inflation expectations begin to become unanchored, and that would make their job of inflation containment ‌all the harder. Some more volatile measures of households’ inflation expectations, such as the University of Michigan’s Consumer Sentiment Index survey, are notably higher since the war began. Other measures have remained more subdued to suggest expectations remain anchored for now, including the New York Fed’s Survey of Consumer Expectations and market-based gauges like Treasury Inflation Protected Securities breakeven inflation rates and a derivative of those known as the five-year, five-year forward rate.

    GROWTH & CONSUMPTION

Fed officials will not see a gross domestic product report covering even part of the conflict period until after this week’s meeting. The latest-available figures still refer to the fourth quarter of 2025, a period when growth was restrained by a record-long federal government shutdown. Economic growth is expected to have rebounded to 2.3% in the first quarter, according to economists polled by Reuters, but the range of estimates from minus 0.2% to plus 3.9% is unusually wide given the uncertainty over the war’s impact. The growth recovery is owing in part to the effects of the Republican tax cuts enacted last year, which resulted in larger individual tax refunds this filing season that appear to be buoying household spending and faster business investment depreciation that is seen lifting corporate capital expenditures.

As with GDP, Fed officials still have not seen a full consumer spending report that includes the conflict period, but other measures of consumption like retail sales have risen at both the headline and core levels.

    • Charles to visit Harlem community project, Camilla to host Winnie the Pooh event
    • King’s speech to Congress emphasized UK-US ties and NATO’s importance
    • Charles met Trump and tech leaders in Washington amid UK-US tensions over Iran war

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK, April 29 (Reuters) – Britain’s King Charles and his wife Queen Camilla arrive in New York on Wednesday to commemorate victims of ‌the September 11, 2001 terror attacks on the city, part of a four-day state visit to the U.S.

The king and queen’s scheduled arrival in New York follows a packed day in Washington on Tuesday, when Charles delivered a speech to the U.S. Congress, held private meetings with President Donald Trump amid tensions between the U.S. and UK over the Iran war, and sat down with leaders of the U.S. tech industry.

At a White House state dinner on Tuesday night, Trump suggested Charles told the president he supported an end to Iran’s nuclear program. The king is not a spokesman for the UK government and it could not be confirmed that Charles made the statement to Trump. Downing Street and Buckingham Palace did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Charles and Camilla will begin their day in New York with a ceremony at the 9/11 memorial in lower Manhattan, where the twin towers of the World Trade Center were destroyed by al-Qaeda suicide bombers on September 11, 2001, an attack that killed nearly 2,800 people.

Charles is expected to meet with New York City’s mayor, Zohran Mamdani, at the ceremony.

The king will then head to Harlem to visit a grassroots community organization that created a sustainable after-school urban farming initiative in an effort to combat food insecurity, according to local media. Such projects have been a passion of the king’s for decades.

Meanwhile, ‌Camilla will celebrate the 100th birthday of A.A. Milne’s fictional character Winnie the Pooh on behalf of her charity, The Queen’s Reading Room, which Buckingham Palace is calling a “literary engagement” event.

Charles and Camilla’s visit to New York comes on the third day of their state visit to the U.S. during a tense time in relations between the U.S. and the UK, after Trump has repeatedly criticized UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer for what Trump says is his lack of help in prosecuting the Iran war.

In his speech to the U.S. Congress on Tuesday, Charles stressed the historical military and cultural ties between the UK and U.S., in a visit which officially is to celebrate the 250th anniversary of America’s declaration of independence from British rule.

Yet the king also stressed the importance of NATO, at a time when Trump has been critical of the Western military alliance’s reluctance to provide military help to the U.S.-Israeli war against Iran, and warned against American isolationism.

“I pray with all my heart that our lands will continue to defend our shared values with our partners in Europe and the Commonwealth, and across the world, and that we ignore the clarion calls to become ever more inward-looking,” Charles told the joint meeting of the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives.

Congressional Republicans entered the record-breaking Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown united — 75 days later, and they are increasingly at odds over how to end it.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., is now floating a change to the Senate’s DHS bill funding most of the department after declining to put the measure on the floor for more than a month.

The new demand comes as the department’s vital security role was spotlighted on Saturday when the Secret Service stopped a gunman from storming the ballroom where he allegedly planned to assassinate President Donald Trump and members of his Cabinet.

The Secret Service is among several agencies under the DHS umbrella that are currently operating without full-year funding. The assassination scare notably spurred Trump to demand that DHS funding, and the forthcoming budget reconciliation process, be wrapped up soon.

DEMOCRAT WHO BROKE WITH PARTY SAYS HIS DHS FUNDING VOTE A ‘MISTAKE’ AFTER 2ND MINNEAPOLIS ICE SHOOTING

Now, Johnson’s new tactic is to modify the Senate bill, which he claims “has some problematic language because it was haphazardly drafted.”

“We have a modified version that I think is going to be much better for both chambers,” Johnson told reporters on Monday.

“It makes sure that we’re not going to orphan two of the primary agencies of DHS,” he added. “We have to make sure that immigration law is enforced and that the border is safe and secure. Democrats don’t want to have any part of that, so unfortunately, we have to do that on our own.”

But the White House, in a memo to House Republicans obtained by Fox News Digital, demanded that Johnson pass the Senate’s bill as is, and warned that unless the House took action, the remaining DHS funding would soon dry up.

“It is imperative that Congress immediately fund DHS and its critical operations to protect the homeland,” the memo stated.

The Senate bill and a separate budget reconciliation bill funding immigration enforcement are part of a two-track approach that congressional Republicans are pursuing to end the funding lapse.

Johnson has long reflected the view of many in the GOP by voicing objections to the Senate bill because it zeroes out funding for ICE and CBP.

But Senate Republicans are frustrated with their House colleagues who continue to sit on the bill that would reopen most of DHS while teasing forthcoming modifications. Any substantial alteration to the bill outside a minor technical correction would kick the bill back to the Senate for reconciliation.

Trump has not weighed in on the Senate’s partial DHS bill, but has urged the House to quickly approve the Senate-passed budget blueprint funding immigration enforcement.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., noted that it had been nearly 30 days since he and the speaker put out a joint statement supporting the Senate’s funding bill.

“I guess my question is, what was the alternative? And that’s what I said to them at the time, and you tell me, give me a better option, ’cause I’m open to ideas,” Thune said Tuesday. “But I don’t think anybody had one, and we had a bunch of agencies that weren’t being funded.”

Congressional Democrats have ripped Johnson for holding up the Senate bill, though Republicans note that Congress would not be in the funding stalemate if Democrats had agreed to a full-year spending bill for the department.

“Johnson can just take up the bill that was passed unanimously in the Senate and we’d be funding all of DHS except for ICE and CBP, and then we could work on that,” Rep. Teresa Leger Fernandez, D-N.M., told Fox News on Tuesday.

“The fact that he has failed to do so is outrageous and it’s on him that we are not paying the rest of DHS,” she added.

Meanwhile, Senate Democrats, who voted unanimously alongside Republicans twice on the funding deal, are scratching their heads about what exactly Johnson is trying to do.

Democrats have also signaled a possible return of the funding standoff that dominated the upper chamber for over a month.

“They’re just stuck so they come up with — we need some technical changes,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said. “Hold up national security for technical changes? It’s absurd.”

Tourist dies after being bitten at snake-charming show while on family vacation in Egypt

    April 29, 2026 / 6:38 AM EDT / CBS/AFP

A German tourist has died after a snake crawled into his pants and bit him as he watched a show in Egypt on a family vacation, German police said Monday.

The 57-year-old man was watching the snake-charming show at a hotel in Hurghada, a popular beach holiday destination on the Red Sea, in early April.

The two reptiles involved, reported to be cobras, were draped over the necks of audience members, police in southern Bavaria state said.

“The ‘snake charmer’ then let one of the snakes crawl into the trousers” of the German man and it bit him in the leg, they said in a statement.

The victim showed “clear signs of poisoning” and had to be resuscitated before being taken to hospital, but he later died, it said.

The man — who was not named in the statement — came from the Unterallgaeu district in Bavaria and was on holiday with two relatives.

German police and prosecutors are investigating his death and are awaiting the results of a toxicology test.

When contacted by AFP, Egyptian authorities said they were not aware of the incident.

An estimated 5.4 million people worldwide are bitten by snakes each year and up to 138,000 people die globally from the bites, according to the World Health Organization. The majority of fatal snake bites occur in India.

At least three people have died from snake bites in Southern California in just the past two months, CBS Los Angeles reported.

Earlier this month, a woman died after being bitten by a rattlesnake while picking flowers in Palos Veres Estates. In March, a 25-year-old man died after he was bitten by a rattlesnake while biking in Irvine, and a 46-year-old woman died after she was bitten while hiking in Thousand Oaks.
