More than 1,000 bone fragments found in Mexico City weeks before World Cup: “Devastating reality”

    April 18, 2026 / 12:51 PM EDT / CBS/AFP

More than 1,000 bone fragments have been found near a lake in Mexico City, authorities and a volunteer group said, just weeks before it hosts the World Cup — another grim reminder of the country’s violent drug war.

A collective of families looking for their loved ones said the gruesome findings near Lake Chalco demonstrated a “devastating reality” and “a forensic crisis of incalculable dimensions.”

While “the authorities want this to go unnoticed, the families want the whole world to know the tragedy that occurs in the country’s capital,” the group said in a statement.

City authorities last week began exhuming the lakefront site in the eastern part of Mexico City, and prosecutors announced Monday that some 300 bone fragments, which they believe could belong to three people, had been found.

But the volunteer group said they found more than 1,000 bone fragments in and around the site, including in areas which had already been examined by government agents.

Members of missing persons collectives and Mexico City’s judicial authorities take part in a search operation at the Tlahuac‑Chalco lakes, where, according to local media, hundreds of bone fragments have been found, in Mexico City, Mexico, April 15, 2026. Haaron Alvarez / REUTERS

More than 480,000 people have been killed and another 130,000 have gone missing in Mexico’s drug war since 2006, when the government deployed federal troops to take on the country’s powerful cartels.

A U.N. committee of experts has called the missing persons crisis a “crime against humanity,” saying efforts to recover human remains have been hampered by “acquiescence and omission on the part of public servants.”

“International law does not require crimes against humanity to occur nationwide or be orchestrated at the highest levels of government,” committee chair Juan Albán-Alencastro said in a statement. “What matters is the scale, the pattern of the attacks, and the targeting of civilians.”

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum attacked the report, arguing it ignored new policies implemented to support the families of the missing.

In a meeting with city officials on Friday, the activists demanded that searches be carried out without interruption until the site is fully inspected.

Both Mexico City and Guadalajara are preparing to host World Cup games in June, with protesters in both cities denouncing the government’s failure to properly investigate the disappearances. The United States and Canada are co-hosting the Cup.

Guadalajara is located in the state of Jalisco, which has more than 15,900 cases of missing persons, a toll that experts attribute to the activities of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, official data shows. The cartel has been accused of using fake job advertisements to lure new members and of torturing and killing recruits who resist.

In February, Mexican military forces killed Nemesio “El Mencho” Oseguera, the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel and one of the United States’ most-wanted drug lords, leading to an outbreak of violence. After the incident, FIFA reaffirmed its confidence as a host city.

Human remains are routinely found in Jalisco, sometimes in clandestine graves. Earlier this month, the skeletal remains of at least 11 people were found in hidden graves in a rural lot in Ixtlahuacan, a suburb of Guadalajara. Last October, dozens of bags containing human remains were discovered and recovered from a hidden grave near Guadalajara.

Trump is savaging allies who criticize the Iran war. But he’s treating Joe Rogan very differently

    Jim Watson/AFP/Getty Images

The way Joe Rogan tells it, about all President Donald Trump needed before he fast-tracked research into therapeutic uses for certain psychedelic treatments like Ibogaine was a text from the podcaster.

“The text message came back, ‘Sounds great! Do you want FDA approval? Let’s do it!’” Rogan said while standing directly behind Trump at an Oval Office signing ceremony on Saturday. “It was literally that quick.”

The anecdote was seemingly meant to show how anxious Trump is to help people. But it also reflected an increasingly fascinating power dynamic between Trump and Rogan.

Rogan’s surprise visit happened to come after he has made a number of high-profile comments critical of Trump’s handling of the Iran war to Rogan’s massive podcast audience.

And while Trump has savaged other allies who offered similar criticisms – people like Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens and Alex Jones – he’s taking a very different tack with Rogan.

It’s a much more solicitous one. While others get the vinegar, Rogan is for some reason getting the sugar.

Rogan’s commentary on the Iran war has been routinely brutal for Trump.

Last month, he called the war “insane based on what he ran on” – specifically, ending wars – and said the war was “why a lot of people feel betrayed” by Trump.

“I can’t believe we went to this war,” he said on another podcast with Theo Von earlier this month.

And just this Thursday, Rogan called the war “f**king terrifying.”

“Most people that voted for Trump or wanted Trump to be in office, one of the things that was attractive was this: No more wars,” Rogan said. “Now we’re in one of the craziest ones.”

The same day Rogan made those comments, news broke that Trump would sign off on one of Rogan’s big initiatives. (Though it bears emphasizing it’s hardly just Rogan pushing this; it’s also former Republican Texas Gov. Rick Perry and former Democratic Sen. Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona.) Two days later, Rogan was a surprise guest in the Oval Office.

And Rogan wasn’t the only one gesturing at the interesting power dynamics.

At the event, Trump seemed to make a point to refer to Rogan’s audience.

“We did a little interview before the election,” Trump said, referring to his appearance on Rogan’s show in October 2024, shortly before Rogan endorsed him on the eve of the election. “We had over 300 million people, and I said, ‘Oh man, I hope Kamala doesn’t do it.’ And she didn’t.”

Trump also called Rogan “a fantastic person,” despite Rogan’s comments on the Iran war.

US media personality Joe Rogan stands for a benediction after President Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th US President in the US Capitol Rotunda in Washington, DC, on January 20, 2025.

    Saul Loeb/Pool/Reuters

    So how to read this?

One way is that it shows Trump has at least some fear of losing his base over the Iran war. And that would make sense, given there’s a bevy of polling suggesting he should fear such a thing.

While self-described MAGA supporters say they approve of the war, as many as 1 in 5 or even 1 in 4 of Trump’s 2024 voters do not, and many of the rest are only lukewarm on it. A significant chunk of Trump’s voters seem to have at least some buyer’s remorse right now.

Perhaps it’s starting to register for Trump that this is a problem as the midterm elections loom.

But a non-mutually exclusive explanation is that he just sees something different in Rogan than he does in the likes of Kelly and Carlson.

After all, he’s regularly treated Rogan with kid gloves even after other major criticisms.

Trump also fondly recalled his 2024 Rogan interview while speaking with podcaster Logan Paul last month, just a day after Rogan’s first big, harsh Iran war criticisms.

And when NBC News in early February asked Trump directly about Rogan’s criticisms of Trump’s deportation efforts, Trump opted to try and smooth things over rather than lash out.

“I think he’s a great guy, and I think he likes me, too,” Trump said.

Trump then added: “And, you know, liking me isn’t important.”

That’s a laughable comment. Trump has regularly acknowledged how much his view of people hinges on whether they like him.

But when it comes to taking the next step and offering him loyalty, he tends to demand it more from people he thinks should be loyal to him. And in that way, Rogan might be different from others like Kelly and Carlson, who are much more steeped in the conservative movement. Rogan comes from a much more of an apolitical world.

On Saturday in the Oval Office, Trump referred to Rogan as “a little bit more liberal than I am.”

It’s also for that reason that Rogan’s criticisms present a particularly problematic development for Trump. His audience is more apolitical than the likes of Kelly and Carlson. They’re the kind of people Trump only recently brought into his coalition – with Rogan’s help – and therefore Trump might fear they’re more apt to leave.

You can begin to see why Trump might be a little afraid of Rogan – and why he might feel compelled to do him a favor or two.

But it’s still remarkable that Trump, of all people, actually feels like he needs to cater to someone in this way.

6 killed after gunman opens fire in Kyiv, Ukrainian officials say

    April 18, 2026 / 1:26 PM EDT / CBS/AP

A gunman who killed at least six people in Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, before taking hostages and barricading himself inside a supermarket on Saturday has been shot and killed by police, Ukrainian officials said.

Ukraine’s special tactical police units stormed the store after attempts to contact the gunman with a negotiator failed, the head of Ukraine’s Interior Ministry, Ihor Klymenko, said in a statement on social media. The attacker was killed while resisting arrest, he said.

Speaking to reporters at the scene, Klymenko said that the gunman had killed four bystanders while on the street, before entering the supermarket and killing a fifth person.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that a sixth victim, a young woman, died from her injuries in the hospital.

An Associated Press reporter on the scene saw the bodies of the victims in the street covered by emergency blankets before they were taken away.

Klymenko said the shooter was born in 1968 but gave no further details as to his identity. Police negotiators spoke with the attacker for roughly 40 minutes before storming the building, he said.

Before the gunman was shot, a female police negotiator, wearing body armor and standing behind an armored vehicle, used a loudspeaker to call out to the assailant, urging him: “the people are not to blame for this. Please, let them go and we will talk with you.”

“We tried to persuade him, knowing that there was likely a wounded person inside. We even offered to bring in tourniquets to stop the bleeding, but he did not respond,” Klymenko said. “Consequently, the order was given to neutralize him.”

Klymenko, who wore body armor, said the man was carrying a carbine. The short-barrel assault rifle was legally registered, he added.

Last December, the assailant “approached the licensing authorities to have the weapon test-fired as the permit was expiring. He provided a medical certificate. He had also submitted an application to renew his permit for the weapon. That is all we can say for now,” Klymenko said.

A police officer inspects the site where a gunman killed at least six people in the streets before being shot dead by police, in Kyiv, Ukraine, Saturday, April 18, 2026. Dan Bashakov / AP

He added that the investigation will determine which medical institution issued the certificate.

The shooting took place in Kyiv’s Holosiivskyi district, the mayor said. Televised footage of the scene showed police taking cover in the shopping mall that housed the supermarket while shots were fired. Bystanders were escorted away from the scene.

Shooting comes as Russia and Ukraine trade strikes

Also on Saturday, a civilian was killed in Donetsk and dozens more were wounded in overnight attacks by Russia. Local officials reported at least 26 people had been hurt in attacks across northern and eastern Ukraine, including a strike on port infrastructure in the city of Odesa.

Elsewhere, a Ukrainian drone strike targeted industrial areas in Novokuibyshevsk and Syzran in Russia’s Samara region, Gov. Vyacheslav Fedorishchev said Saturday. He did not give further details, but the General Staff of Ukraine’s Armed Forces said in a statement that it had hit major oil refineries in both cities. It also said that its attacks had sparked fires at the Vystosk oil terminal in Russia’s northwestern Leningrad region and an oil refinery in the southern Krasnodar region, with the blazes later confirmed by Russian officials.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense said that its forces destroyed 258 Ukrainian drones overnight over 16 Russian regions, as well as over the annexed Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea and the Black and Azov seas.

The U.S. Navy released photos Saturday of “fresh meals” being served onboard the USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Tripoli as it pushed back against claims of food shortages on Middle East warships.

Images have emerged purportedly showing meager meals being served to sailors during Operation Epic Fury against Iran, but the claims are being rejected at highest levels of the Pentagon, with Secretary of War Pete Hegseth blasting them as “fake news.”

“Fresh meals. Full service. Mission ready. Sailors aboard USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Tripoli continue to receive regularly prepared meals at sea — no interruptions, no shortages,” the Navy wrote on X on Saturday morning.

It shared photos showing full plates of food being served to sailors. One image showed boxes of food supplies stacked to the ceiling onboard one of the ships.

“Recent reports alleging food shortages and poor quality aboard our deployed ships are false,” Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Daryl Caudle said Friday.

“Both USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Tripoli have sufficient food onboard to serve their crews with healthy options. The health and wellbeing of our Sailors and Marines are my top priority, and every crew member continues to receive fully portioned, nutritionally balanced meals,” he added.

“The U.S. Navy is correct. More FAKE NEWS from the Pharisee Press,” Hegseth said in response to Caudle’s statement.

“My team confirmed the logistics stats for the Lincoln& Tripoli. Both have 30+ days of Class I supplies (food) on board.NavCent monitors this everyday, for every ship,” Hegseth said. “Our sailors deserve — and receive — the best.”

U.S. Central Command Adm. Brad Cooper also said Friday that the reports are “blatantly false.”

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani will meet with former President Barack Obama on Saturday at a child care event in New York City, a source familiar told CNN.

Mamdani will greet children and parents at an early childhood education center, according to a news release from the mayor’s office. Politico first reported news of the potential meeting.

The two leaders spoke prior to Election Day in November, according to three sources familiar with the call. Obama told Mamdani during the call that many people would be watching to see how effectively a democratic socialist could run the nation’s largest city, and how many critics would be waiting to pounce if it went wrong. The former president also told Mamdani, whom he didn’t endorse during the 2025 election cycle, to prioritize making good hires to his administration.

The conversation gave Mamdani a clearer sense of the difference between running and governing, a source familiar with the call told CNN at the time.

Mamdani has met face-to-face with President Donald Trump twice. They held seemingly collegial Oval Office meetings last year and earlier this year. But Trump took to social media this week to write an all-caps post stating that Mamdani is “destroying” New York with his new pied-à-terre tax, which would require residents with second homes in the city valued over $5 million to face a surcharge.

Mamdani did not say whether he has spoken to Trump since the president’s social media post, but said he wasn’t surprised Trump disagreed with the policy.

2 soldiers attacked by bear during training at Army base in Alaska

    April 18, 2026 2:38 PM EDT / CBS News

    By Mark Osborne

Two soldiers from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska, were injured in a brown bear attack on Friday during a training session.

“The incident involved two soldiers participating in a land navigation training exercise,” a news statement from the 11th Airborne Division, of which both soldiers are a part, said. “Both individuals sustained injuries and are currently receiving appropriate medical care. For privacy reasons, we are not releasing names or specific details about their conditions until next of kin has been notified.”

Further details on the extent of the soldiers’ injuries were not made available as the investigation is ongoing, officials said.

Both soldiers carried and deployed bear spray during the land navigation training exercise, according to the statement provided to CBS News.

It was likely a defensive attack by a bear recently emerging from a den after hibernating during the winter, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game said after an investigation. Officials said they weren’t able to locate a bear when scouring the remote region.

“We hope both individuals have a full and quick recovery, and our thoughts are with them during this time. ADF&G will continue investigating the circumstances that led to the attack and try to learn everything we can about what happened to increase public safety around wildlife in Alaska,” Regional Supervisor Cyndi Wardlow said in a statement. “In this case, having bear spray with them in the field may have saved their lives.”

Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson is home to more than 40,000 people, of whom more than half are active duty military members. In addition to the 11th Airborne, it is also the home of the 673d Air Base Wing and U.S. Army Alaska.

It is not unheard of for soldiers to be attacked by bears at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson. In May 2022, a soldier, identified as Staff Sgt. Seth Michael Plant, 30, was killed when he was attacked by a bear west of the Anchorage Regional Landfill, according to the base.

Bear attacks are fairly common in Alaska due to the large population. There are about 100,000 black bears and 30,000 brown bears in Alaska, according to the Department of Fish and Game.

There were 68 people hospitalized following bear attacks in the state from 2000 to 2017, according to a study by Alaska’s Section of Epidemiology. The vast majority of attacks – similar to the one on Thursday – are by brown bears, about 96%, according to the study.

There were 10 fatalities resulting from eight separate attacks over that time period, the study showed.

Joseph diGenova, who has worked with Donald Trump’s legal team on a variety of matters, including the 2020 election, will be joining the Justice Department in the Southern District of Florida, multiple people familiar with the matter told CNN.

A Justice Department official confirms diGenova will work on the investigation into former CIA Director John Brennan. He will be counsel to the attorney general in Fort Pierce, Florida, according to multiple sources familiar.

The investigation into Brennan focuses on one of the president’s longest standing political grievances — the 2017 intelligence assessment that found Russia interfered in the 2016 presidential election to help him.

DiGenova’s new role was first reported by Washington-based outlet Just the News.

Brennan has been under criminal investigation since last summer.

Satisfying Trump’s demands has taken on more urgency for the Justice Department after Trump fired former Attorney General Pam Bondi — in part because of dissatisfaction at the slow pace of the cases he wants brought.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche is upping his efforts to deliver on the president’s top Justice Department priorities, including prosecuting his political enemies, as he seeks to keep the job after Bondi’s ouster.

The news of diGenova’s role comes after CNN reported Friday that the Justice Department removed the career Miami federal prosecutor leading the investigation after she had resisted pressure to quickly bring charges against Brennan, according to people briefed on the matter.

DiGenova is a longtime Washington attorney and was at one point on Trump’s legal team during then-special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation. He departed the official defense team because his wife represented several witnesses in the probe but continued to serve as an outside legal adviser.

He had served as the US Attorney for the District of Columbia from 1983 to 1988.

US Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones outlined to Justice officials last fall plans to use a grand jury in Fort Pierce – the courthouse where federal Judge Aileen Cannon sits – to conduct a broad investigation into a possible conspiracy stretching nearly a decade by former law enforcement and intelligence officials to target Trump, according to people familiar with the matter.

The conspiracy focuses on the idea Trump was the victim of a plot that ranged from the 2016 Russia election interference investigation to the Jack Smith probe that resulted in charges against him.

Cannon, who Trump nominated in his first term, dismissed the classified document mishandling charges that Smith brought against Trump brought in her court in 2024.

This story was updated with additional details of the probe.

U.K. police investigate arson attack on building formerly housing Jewish charity

    April 18, 2026 / 12:12 PM EDT / CBS/AFP

U.K. counterterrorism police are investigating an arson attack on a London building that was formerly used by a Jewish charity following a spate of similar incidents in recent weeks.

The fire occurred late Friday in London’s northern Hendon neighborhood, the Metropolitan Police said in a statement. Police were called to the scene shortly after 10:30 p.m. Friday, when a man was spotted approaching a row of shops carrying a plastic bag. He placed the bag by a building before lighting the items inside, according to police.

The bag was later found to have three bottles containing “fluid,” police said. When the bottles failed to fully ignite, the man fled the scene, according to police.

No one was injured. Photos show a sign for the education organization Jewish Futures still visible in the building’s window. The Community Security Trust, a charity that provides safety advice to Jewish groups, said the fire “caused minimal damage to a nearby doorway.”

“We are aware of what appears to be another attempted arson, this time targeting a premises in north London previously used by the Jewish community,” the Community Security Trust charity.

Police said the community can expect to see a heightened law enforcement presence in the area.

The attack mirrored recent incidents in the same area. Two people were arrested on Wednesday over a separate arson attack on a North London synagogue.

In late March, four Jewish community ambulances were torched in Golders Green, also in north London. Hamza Iqbal, 20, and Rehan Khan, 19, and a 17-year-old of dual British-Pakistani nationality who cannot be named because of his age, all from east London, were charged with arson and taken into custody in connection with that incident.

Helen Flanagan, a member of the Metropolitan Police’s counterterrorism unit, said in a statement that the Hendon attack is “not being linked to other incidents in north-west London,” but said that the unit is leading the investigation “due to the similarities of each attack.”

On Wednesday evening, a burning object was thrown towards the offices of Persian media outlet Iran International, which is heavily critical of Iran’s clerical leadership. It landed in a car park and no one was injured.

Little-known group Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamiya, with links to Iran, claimed responsibility for that and the attacks on the synagogue and ambulances, according to SITE Intelligence Group.

The group previously claimed similar attacks in Belgium and the Netherlands.

The Community Security Trust has recorded 3,700 antisemitic incidents in the United Kingdom in 2025, the second-highest total ever reported to the organization.

Walz rips Trump and Vance in Europe, says ‘feeble-minded, trigger-happy president’ has no exit plan for Iran

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz slammed President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance at a conference for progressives in Spain on Saturday, accusing Trump of being a “feeble-minded, trigger-happy president” who has “no exit plan” for the ongoing conflict with Iran.

Walz delivered the criticism after a crowd at the inaugural Global Progressive Mobilization event in Barcelona heard video messages from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani about affordability and Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., speaking about the “illegal and dangerous wars being waged by Netanyahu and Trump in Iran and Lebanon.”

“We’ve got a feeble-minded, trigger-happy president who plunged us into a war where no threat was present, with no clear objectives and no exit plan. We need to call that what it is. That’s fascism. Or at least it’s fascist curious as they would be,” Walz said.

“Look, it’d be easy to stand up here and just bash Donald Trump. He’s an easy target. And if you know me, we don’t get along very well,” Walz added. “But we’ve got a lot of bigger fish and bigger problems to fry in this room, because the truth is, authoritarianism is not just confined to the United States. It’s everywhere.”

Walz also said “Many of you might know me as the guy who isn’t currently the Vice President of the United States, and all I have to say about that is I’m very sorry about that.”

“But unlike our current vice president, I’m not here to arrogantly lecture or scold you. I’m not here to pick up a fight with the Pope, and I’m not here to host a rally for some local wannabe dictator. Instead, I’m here to say thank you and to share some thoughts on what we can do to be part of a progressive movement that moves all of our countries forward,” he continued.

Walz told the crowd at one point in his speech, “Please don’t give up on the American people.”

“Go ahead and give up and condemn that monstrosity that sits in our White House,” he added in reference to Trump. “Keep the pressure on. Keep calling it out. Keep standing up to it. Keep naming it. But know there are more good people that stand on the right side of history. There are more good people that care about equality, that understands it’s not America First, it’s humanity first. It’s all of us together.”

The 2-day Global Progressive Mobilization conference described itself on its website as a “necessary alternative to conservative and far-right forces.”

Prior to Walz’s remarks, Trump took to Truth Social to criticize Spain.

“Has anybody looked at how badly the country of Spain is doing. Their financial numbers, despite contributing almost nothing to NATO and their military defense, are absolutely horrendous. Sad to watch!!!” Trump wrote Saturday.
