A skydiver crashed into the Lane Stadium scoreboard before Virginia Tech’s spring football game Saturday.

Virginia Tech officials said on X that the skydiver “was safely secured and is currently stable” following rescue efforts. The incident caused a delay in the start of the spring game.

“Thankful for game days with Hokie Nation and for the Blacksburg and Virginia Tech first responders whose quick actions safely returned today’s parachuter to the ground without injury,” the university said.

The name of the skydiver wasn’t released.

SAN FRANCISCO, April 18 (Reuters) – The U.S. Department of Justice will add an attorney who once worked for President Donald Trump to the investigation into former Central Intelligence Agency Director John Brennan, CNN reported on Saturday.

Citing sources familiar with the ‌matter, the network reported that Joseph diGenova, who has worked with Trump’s legal team on a variety of matters, will join the Justice Department in the Southern District of Florida to work on the Brennan probe. Brennan, a cable news analyst and longtime critic of Trump, has condemned reported investigations into him as politically biased and a misuse of the legal system.

The Justice Department and diGenova’s law firm did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comment. An attorney for Brennan has previously said there is no legal basis for an investigation.

The reports of diGenova’s appointment come days after Maria Medetis Long, a top career prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s office in Miami, told attorneys connected to the investigation that she is no longer working on the case.

Reuters reported this week that the FBI planned to interview roughly a half-dozen people, including former intelligence officials, ‌over the next several weeks as part of the investigation into Brennan.

A DOJ official told Reuters this week that there had been frustration inside the department with the pace of the investigation. Another source familiar with the investigation said some witness interviews were not expected to take place until June.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche has faced pressure to prosecute Trump’s perceived political enemies after his predecessor, Pam Bondi, was ousted over Trump’s dissatisfaction with her handling of probes Trump demanded.

A former federal prosecutor, diGenova was part of Trump’s legal team during an investigation by Robert Mueller into Russia’s interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.

DiGenova later worked with pro-Trump lawyers pursuing attempts to contest the 2020 election results, making waves when he suggested that a former cybersecurity official who had served in the Trump administration should be “Taken out at dawn and shot.”

Trump lawyer from effort to overturn 2020 election to oversee probe of ex-CIA director, DOJ official says

Joseph DiGenova, a conservative attorney who previously represented President Trump’s campaign when it challenged the results of the 2020 election, is being tapped by the U.S. Justice Department to lead an ongoing criminal investigation into former CIA Director John Brennan, a Justice Department official said on Saturday.

DiGenova, who will oversee the probe from the Southern District of Florida, is joining the team just days after Maria Medetis Long was removed from the case, CBS News previously reported. He will serve as counselor to acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, the official added.

A source familiar with the matter told CBS News that Medetis Long was taken off the case after expressing concerns about the strength of the evidence. A Justice Department spokesperson on Friday said changing up personnel on cases was “healthy and normal” without elaborating on the reasons for the change.

The decision to add DiGenova and remove a career federal prosecutor from the probe is likely to stoke concerns about whether the case is politically motivated. The personnel switch has echoes of another case last year when Mr. Trump ousted the top federal prosecutor in Virginia’s Eastern District and replaced him with a loyalist after he expressed concerns about the strength of the evidence in cases against former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Charges against James were later dismissed, although a Trump administration official made new criminal referrals last month to federal prosecutors in Miami and Chicago for two cases of possible homeowner’s insurance fraud.

DiGenova is a staunch Trump ally who repeatedly pushed conspiracy theories alleging the 2020 election was stolen. In 2021, he was forced to apologize to Chris Krebs, the former director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency who was fired during Mr. Trump’s first term, after Krebs said he felt the 2020 election was free of major fraud or interference.

Krebs later sued DiGenova after he called for Krebs to be “drawn and quartered” and “shot” during a television appearance. Those comments, Krebs later alleged, sparked death threats against him.

DiGenova, 81, previously served as U.S. attorney in Washington, D.C., under Republican President Ronald Reagan.

The probe into Brennan was sparked by a referral from the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee last October over allegations that Brennan lied to Congress about the CIA’s role in crafting the intelligence assessment into Russia’s efforts to meddle in the 2016 presidential election.

In the referral, Chairman Jim Jordan claimed Brennan “falsely” denied the CIA relied on a dossier prepared by former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele during the drafting of the intelligence assessment and falsely told the committee the CIA had opposed including the Steele dossier in the assessment.

The so-called Steele dossier contained salacious allegations against then-candidate Trump that have not been verified.

The case has been heating up in recent weeks, as members of the team continue to conduct interviews with key witnesses. Chris DeLorenz, a former law clerk to U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon during special counsel Jack Smith’s probe into Mr. Trump’s retention of classified records, is also involved in the case after he recently left his role in the deputy attorney general’s office to become a prosecutor in the Southern District of Florida.

Obama meets Mamdani in New York City ahead of a preschool reading event

    April 18, 2026 / 6:28 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Former President Barack Obama met with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani for the first time on Saturday, where they read to preschoolers and led a sing-along at a child care center.

The meeting comes as Mamdani, a democratic socialist, is also trying to build a working relationship with Republican President Trump. The meeting comes just over a week after Mamdani marked his 100th day in office.

Obama and Mamdani did not take questions after reading the book “Alone and Together” to the children, and leading a sing-along of “The Wheels on the Bus.”

The two leaders discussed the mayor’s vision for New York City and the importance of early childhood education, according to a news release from the mayor’s office.

“Great spending time with New York City’s Cutest,” Obama said in a post on X. “And thanks to @NYCMayor for giving me an excuse to break out my best ‘Wheels on the Bus.’”

The former two-term president and standard-bearer for the Democratic Party has offered to be a sounding board for Mamdani, 34, whose star power, youth and progressive agenda has made him stand out in Democratic politics.

Mamdani took office in January after a campaign centered on making New York City a more affordable place to live, centering his agenda on refocusing the vast power of government toward helping the city’s struggling working class.

Days before the election in November, Obama and Mamdani spoke over the phone as some other major Democrats took a cautious political approach when it came to the democratic socialist.

Mamdani’s meeting with Obama comes after he has already met twice with President Trump at the White House in November and February to discuss issues affecting New York City.

Despite those friendly meetings, their relationship has shown signs of strain recently, with Mr. Trump posting on Truth Social Thursday that Mamdani was “DESTROYING New York” with his taxing policies and threatened to pull federal funding for the city.

Mamdani told “CBS Mornings” this week that he and Mr. Trump “are in touch” and are “honest, direct about the fact that we have many disagreements.”

“There is one place of agreement that we have, which is that we both love New York City,” Mamdani told “CBS Mornings.”

Former chef facing 14 murder charges to plead guilty to aiding suicide

    April 18, 2026 / 12:34 PM EDT / CBS/AP

A Canadian man facing murder charges for allegedly selling lethal substances online to people at risk of self-harm has agreed to plead guilty to counseling or aiding suicide, his lawyer confirmed Saturday.

In turn, Canadian prosecutors will withdraw all 14 murder charges laid against Kenneth Law, lawyer Matthew Gourlay told The Associated Press in an email. “The plea will be to the charges of aiding suicide,” he said.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation first reported the plea.

Law’s case is scheduled to return to a Newmarket, Ontario, court on Monday afternoon. Calls to Ontario’s Ministry of the Attorney General were not immediately answered.

Canadian police say Law, from the Toronto area, used a series of websites to market and sell sodium nitrite, a substance commonly used to cure meats that can be deadly if ingested.

Canadian police say Law is suspected of sending at least 1,200 packages to more than 40 countries. Authorities in the United States, Britain, Italy, Australia and New Zealand have also launched investigations. Britain’s National Crime Agency said it has identified 232 people in the U.K. who bought products from the websites in the two years up until April 2023. Of those purchasers, 88 had died.

It is against the law in Canada for someone to recommend suicide, although assisted suicide has been legal since 2016 for people aged at least 18. Any adult with a serious illness, disease or disability may seek help in dying, but they must ask for assistance from a physician.

The Canadian victims were both male and female between the ages of 16 and 36, according to police.

Law has been in custody since his arrest at his Mississauga, Ontario, home in May 2023.

Abetting suicide carries a maximum sentence of 14 years, according to the Canadian Criminal Code. A murder conviction automatically means life in prison, with no chance of parole for at least 25 years.

Rubio targets Nicaraguan official over alleged torture tied to ‘brutal’ Ortega regime

The move targets Vice Minister Luis Roberto Cañas Novoa and follows sanctions on five other Nicaraguan officials in February

Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced Saturday that the Trump administration is sanctioning a senior Nicaraguan official over alleged human rights violations.

Rubio said the U.S. is designating Vice Minister of the Interior Luis Roberto Cañas Novoa for his role in “gross violations of human rights” under the government of President Daniel Ortega and Vice President Rosario Murillo, marking what he said was the latest effort to hold the regime accountable.

“The Trump administration continues to hold the Murillo-Ortega dictatorship accountable for brutal human rights violations against Nicaraguans,” Rubio said in a post on X. “I’m designating Nicaraguan Vice Minister of the Interior Luis Roberto Cañas Novoa for his role in human rights violations.”

The designation was made under Section 7031(c), which allows the State Department to bar foreign officials and their immediate family members from entering the United States due to involvement in significant corruption or human rights abuses.

The State Department has said the Ortega-Murillo government has engaged in arbitrary arrests, torture and extrajudicial killings following mass protests that began in April 2018.

“Nearly eight years ago, the Rosario Murillo and Daniel Ortega dictatorship unleashed a brutal wave of repression against Nicaraguans who courageously stood against the regime’s increased tyranny, corruption, and abuse,” the statement reads.

The State Department said that the sanction marked the anniversary of the 2018 protests, after which more than 325 protesters were murdered in the aftermath.

A panel of U.N.-backed human rights experts previously accused Nicaragua’s government of systematic abuses “tantamount to crimes against humanity,” following an investigation into the country’s crackdown on political dissent, according to The Associated Press.

The experts said the repression intensified after mass protests in 2018 and has since expanded across large parts of society, targeting perceived opponents of the government.

Nicaragua’s government has rejected those findings.

The designation follows a series of recent U.S. actions targeting the Ortega-Murillo government. In February, the State Department sanctioned five senior Nicaraguan officials tied to repression, citing arbitrary detention, torture, killings and the targeting of clergy, media and civil society.

Earlier this week, the department also announced sanctions on individuals and companies linked to Nicaragua’s gold sector, including two of Ortega and Murillo’s sons, accusing the regime of using the industry to generate foreign currency, launder assets and consolidate power within the ruling family.

The State Department said the move is part of ongoing efforts to hold the Nicaraguan government accountable for its actions.

The Trump administration has taken an increasingly aggressive posture in the Western Hemisphere in recent months, including a Jan. 3, 2026, operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.

The U.S. has also carried out a series of strikes targeting suspected drug-trafficking vessels in the region, part of a broader crackdown tied to regional security and narcotics enforcement efforts.
