    • House bill maintains SNAP cuts, faces criticism from Democrats and anti-hunger groups
    • Farm groups welcome bill for stability, but some say it lacks aid for struggling farmers
    • MAHA activists succeed in blocking pesticide lawsuit shield

WASHINGTON, April 30 (Reuters) – The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday passed its version of a five-year farm bill after stripping a provision opposed by the “Make America Healthy Again” movement that ‌would have blocked some lawsuits against pesticide makers.

The House passage shows progress for the long-stalled, sweeping legislation, which funds agricultural and food aid programs, but it will still need to pass the Senate before it can advance to President Donald Trump’s desk.

Historically bipartisan, the farm bill has faced hurdles since the prior bill expired in 2023, as Republicans and Democrats in both chambers battle over its provisions, which range from farm subsidies to food stamps.

The House version passed on Thursday extends much of the framework of the prior bill with some changes, like maintaining cuts to the food stamp program included in Trump’s tax and spending bill passed last year.

The bill passed by 224 votes to 200, with Republicans picking up 14 Democratic votes.

“It is clearer every day that farm country needs updated policy that reflects current challenges, and the 2026 farm bill fills that gap,” said House Agriculture Committee Chairman Glenn ‘GT’ Thompson in a statement.

Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman John Boozman said in a statement that he would release that chamber’s farm bill text in the coming weeks.

    FARMERS UNDER STRAIN

Farm groups largely cheered the passage of the bill, which they said could provide some stability for farmers facing the pressures of higher fuel and fertilizer costs from the U.S. war in Iran.

“Important updates to research and conservation, as well as increased loan limits and clarity on interstate commerce, will help farmers survive today’s challenges and give them the tools to thrive ‌in the future,” said American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall in a statement.

But some Democrats argued the bill did not go far enough for farmers.

“The so-called farm bill that passed the House today does nothing to resolve high input costs, lost markets, surging food prices or provide a single penny in economic assistance to struggling family farmers,” said Angie Craig, the top Democrat on the House Agriculture Committee.

Anti-hunger groups criticized the bill for failing to overturn $187 billion in cuts to SNAP passed in Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill.

The bill did not include a provision backed by some Republican legislators to allow year-round sales of the higher-ethanol gasoline blend E15. The House is expected to vote on a standalone E15 bill on May 13.

    A MAHA VICTORY

The bill also did not include a provision that would have shielded pesticide companies from some lawsuits over the safety of their products, after MAHA activists lobbied aggressively against the provision ahead of the vote.

Many supporters of MAHA, which backs Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., oppose pesticide use on food crops.

Hundreds of MAHA activists rallied at the Supreme Court on Monday as pesticide maker Bayer appeared for oral arguments in its effort to end thousands of lawsuits that allege its Roundup weedkiller causes cancer.

The amendment passed by 280 votes to 142, with bipartisan support.

“Lawmakers caved to anti-science MAHA activists instead of standing with those who grow our food,” said Elizabeth Burns-Thompson, executive director of the Bayer-backed Modern Ag Alliance, in a statement.

Prosecutors filed new evidence Thursday including video showing the moments before the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner that President Donald Trump and administration officials attended at the Washington Hilton hotel in DC on Saturday night.

The video shows the alleged attacker, Cole Tomas Allen, walk through a doorway in the hall leading to the security check point.

One second later, an officer and his dog approach the door, which leads to a separate hallways with elevators.

The officer stands at the doorway looking down the hallway with elevators for approximately 12 seconds, while his dog moves in and out of the doorway. During this period the camera angle does not show Allen.

The officer and his dog eventually turn to walk away, and one second later the suspect can be seen rushing back out of the doorway with a shotgun, running toward the security checkpoint. Prosecutors say the video shows Allen and a Secret Service officer exchange fire. It is not immediately clear in the video when Allen allegedly shot his gun.

DC US Attorney Jeanine Pirro, whose office is prosecuting the case, said the video shows Allen shoot that same officer.

“There is no evidence the shooting was the result of friendly fire,” Pirro said in posting the video online.

Prior to the shooting, the video shows Allen wandering through the halls and areas of the hotel Saturday night, which Pirro says shows that Allen was casing the hotel.

Despite Allen’s attorneys telling a federal judge Thursday they would not fight a motion to keep Allen behind bars as the case continues, prosecutors still wanted to present evidence as to why they consider Allen a threat.

The judge said it would be a waste of time since Allen was not fighting the detention motion.

Despite this, Pirro’s prosecutors filed the video along with other images allegedly of Allen, his hotel room, a used shotgun casing, and the other weapons and gear Allen allegedly had, including a pistol, knives and tape.

    2026-04-30T17:07:25-0400 / https://www.cbsnews.com/news/redistricting-2026-midterm-elections-supreme-court/

What states could try to redistrict and add more GOP seats for the 2026 midterms after Callais decision

    2026-04-30T17:07:25-0400 / https://www.cbsnews.com/news/redistricting-2026-midterm-elections-supreme-court/

Louisiana’s Secretary of State on Thursday announced the state would suspend the May 16 House primaries in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court striking down the state’s congressional map one day earlier.

The Supreme Court’s ruling on Wednesday about Louisiana’s congressional map could have implications for several southern states, as it weakened the relevant section of the Voting Rights Act about majority-minority districts.

In a perfect world for Republicans, many southern states could redraw their maps, withstand legal challenges and collectively add between one to nine more GOP-friendly districts for the 2026 midterms, according to a CBS News analysis. That number is expected to grow for the 2028 cycle as more states redraw their lines in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling.

But there is a big obstacle for any more GOP redraws in 2026: time.

Many states either have conducted their primary elections, have them coming up soon or have already passed the qualification deadline for candidates to get onto the ballot. Legal challenges are likely, and last-minute changes to the maps could run into trouble with the “Purcell principle,” which establishes that federal courts cannot change voting or election rules too close to an election.

Another obstacle for 2026 is the uphill political environment for the party, stemming from voter frustrations with the economy and continuing U.S. war waged on Iran.

“If you draw a Trump +7 district or even a Trump +10 district, that may not be enough. So why not wait til’ an election cycle in 2028 that might be better for your party?” said Michael Li, senior counsel in the Brennan Center’s Democracy Program.

While there have been calls from GOP activists to tweak their maps in many Republican-controlled states, including Georgia and South Carolina, here is a breakdown of which states are likely to try to redraw their maps before this November’s midterm election:

    Louisiana (potential +1 to 2 R seats)

Early voting for the May 16 primary was set to start May 2, and ballots have already been printed. Secretary of State Nancy Landry said Thursday that the other primaries will go on as planned, including for the state’s Senate race, and they will post at all voting locations that the House primary has been suspended.

“Pursuant to 18:401.1(B), I have certified the emergency in light of the Supreme Court ruling. This is a mandatory step prior to the Governor issuing an executive order suspending the upcoming Louisiana U.S. House races,” Secretary Landry said in a statement on social media.

In an executive order signed Thursday, Republican Gov. Jeff Landry encouraged the state legislature to pass new congressional maps and schedule elections “as soon as practical.” President Trump thanked Landry on Thursday for moving quickly to redraw the lines after the high court’s decision.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill told CBS News on Wednesday that the state may move to revert back to the old map, with just one Black-majority district, even if it is a “big lift” to change the dates for the state’s May primary. That map favored Republicans in five districts and Democrats in just one.

Depending on how aggressive state GOP legislators are, a new map could add one to two GOP-leaning seats by carving up the Black-majority seats they have. The state is nearly one-third Black, according to the U.S. Census.

“We can realistically end up having six congressional districts with no African-American, or Democratic representation, it’s very possible, given what we’ve seen happen across this country,” Democratic Rep. Troy Carter told CBS News on Wednesday.

“The reality is this is much deeper and much further than Louisiana. This can impact up to 19 or 20 seats in the congressional Black Caucus. It can impact school boards. It can impact city councils, legislative seats. This is, in fact, an explosive move to turn the clock back all the way pre-1965,” he added.

    Florida (potential +4 R)

A proposed map from Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis passed the state legislature on Wednesday and is waiting for his signature. It looks to add four more Republican-leaning seats by eliminating or shrinking Democratic-leaning districts in Tampa, Orlando and parts of the state’s southeast coast.

DeSantis’ counsel had already been anticipating this ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court, and argue it means they don’t have to follow racial requirements within their own state constitution’s “Fair Districts” Amendments.

“Much like Louisiana’s ‘intentional compliance with the court’s demands constituted an express acknowledgement that race played a role in the drawing of district lines,’ Florida’s intentional compliance with the [Fair Districts Amendments] would constitute such an acknowledgement,” DeSantis general counsel David Axelman wrote in a letter to state lawmakers as they were debating the map.

Democratic election lawyer Marc Elias has pledged to challenge the map in court.

    Tennessee (potential +1 R)

Gubernatorial candidate and current U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn has already called repeatedly for the Tennessee legislature to reconvene to redraw the lines for the 2026 election. Blackburn proposed a map that could result in a nine Republican to zero Democrat split, by breaking up Tennessee’s 9th District that encompasses Memphis and diluting the Black voter population.

The state’s Congressional primaries are scheduled for Aug. 6, though the qualifying deadline in March has already passed. Republican Gov. Bill Lee has not called for a redistricting session yet, but the state’s House Republican Whip State. Rep. Johnny Garrett threw his support behind Blackburn’s proposal.

“Tennessee should do its part in supporting @realDonaldTrump’s America First agenda by getting rid of the woke @RepCohen,” Garrett wrote.

Mr. Trump said he called Governor Lee on Thursday, and was told he’d “work hard to correct the unconstitutional flaw in the Congressional Maps of the Great State of Tennessee.”

“This should give us one extra seat, and help Save our Country from the Radical Left Democrats,” Mr. Trump wrote. “Thank you Governor Lee – PUSH HARD!”

    Mississippi (potential +1 R)

Republican Gov. Tate Reeves has already announced that a redistricting session would happen 21 days after the Louisiana v. Callais ruling, which would be May 20. GOP operatives in the state note his call was technically focused on redrawing the State’s Supreme court districts, as those lines had been challenged in courts over diluting the voting power of Black voters.

But it’s possible that Mississippi Republicans will tack on congressional redistricting to this, too, and add 1 GOP-leaning seat by targeting the state’s 2nd Congressional District, a majority-Black district represented by Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson.

“First Dobbs. Now Callais. Just Mississippi and Louisiana down here saving our country!” Reeves wrote on X Wednesday.

But like Louisiana, Mississippi has a timeline problem since its primaries already happened in March.

“There’s lots of complications to [schedule another primary]. If you schedule an August primary, like who’s going to turn out for another primary in August? There’s a lot of variability when you move primaries in different times, and it’s expensive,” said Li, senior counsel in the Brennan Center’s Democracy Program.

“Unlikely legally that redraw would stand, but they can try,” added Michael McNulty, the policy director at the Issue One organization.

That isn’t stopping Republican state officials from saying the lines should be redrawn anyways.

“This likely opens the door to redrawing Mississippi’s congressional districts. Mississippi might no longer have a district drawn to protect Bennie Thompson,” wrote Republican Mississippi state Auditor Shad White.

“It’s time to erase Bennie Thompson’s District,” wrote Republican state Sen. Kevin Blackwell.

    Alabama (potential +1 R)

In 2023, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against Alabama when they took up a similar case to Louisiana v. Callais. They ruled 5-4 in the Allen v. Milligan case that a state GOP-supported congressional map violated Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, and ordered the state to redraw a map that includes a second Black-majority Congressional seat.

But after a federal three judge panel ruled that map violated the Voting Rights Act and 14th Amendment, the state appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court again.

Republican Gov. Kay Ivey pointed to that pending litigation as a reason to not yet call for a special session to redraw the maps. “While we are not in position to have a special session at this time, I hope in light of this new decision, the court is favorable to Alabama,” Ivey said in a statement.

The state now has two Black-majority seats: the 2nd District and 7th District. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall said the state “will act as quickly as possible” to apply the Louisiana ruling to Alabama’s redistricting efforts, to “ensure that our congressional maps reflect the will of the people, not a racial quota system the Constitution forbids.”

The House Ethics Committee is investigating allegations of sexual harassment against GOP Rep. Chuck Edwards, according to two sources familiar with the matter.

The committee was recently contacted by a witness, who described having witnessed improper behavior, the sources said. CNN could not immediately learn the precise nature of the improper behavior, nor was it clear whether the committee had yet corroborated any of the allegations.

Asked to respond to the allegations and launching of the probe, Edwards said in a statement to CNN, “I welcome any investigation, given the professionalism my staff has demonstrated and my commitment to serving the people of Western NC. Given the current political environment we are facing in our nation, it comes as no surprise that others with their own political agendas will attempt to raise false accusations in order to create news stories.”

In recent weeks, the ethics committee has made a public push for anyone with allegations of member misconduct to come forward, as Capitol Hill is reckoning with how to police its own. Several members, Republicans and Democrats, have resigned in recent weeks amid various allegations of wrongdoing.

The Ethics Committee declined to comment. Ethics investigations can take weeks, months, or years, and the results are not always made public.

Axios was first to report that the panel had opened a probe into Edwards, though the report did not specify that the allegations were of sexual harassment.

Trump admin. officials fly on first direct commercial flight between US and Venezuela in 7 years

    April 30, 2026 / 6:01 PM EDT / CBS News

Trump administration officials were on the first nonstop commercial flight between the U.S. and Venezuela in seven years when it took off Thursday from Miami, bound for Caracas.

National Energy Dominance Council’s Jarrod Agen led the U.S. team, and Venezuela’s newly appointed Ambassador to the U.S., Félix Plasencia, was also on board the American Airlines flight.

Agen told CBS News that a White House team traveling to Caracas plans to push along some agreements between U.S. companies and Venezuela’s state oil company PDVSA and some of its mining companies. HKN Energy, a company backed by Ross Perot Jr., as well as Hunt Energy, are among the new American entrants to the Venezuelan market. Agen expected to meet with interim Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez, too.

The trip comes nearly four months after U.S. forces seized Rodríguez’s predecessor, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife in a daring special forces raid. Both were extradited to New York to face drug trafficking charges and have since pleaded not guilty.

Since Maduro’s removal from power, the administration has sought to incentivize U.S. investment in Venezuela’s oil sector, rolling back sanctions to allow American oil companies to spend on infrastructure and production. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum have also led delegations to Venezuela, which holds the world’s largest oil reserves.

“The economic opening in Venezuela is on a bullet train. The democratic process is on a chicken cart,” former U.S. official Juan Gonzalez told CBS News, upon returning from a business trip to Caracas. Gonzalez served as the State Department’s deputy assistant secretary of state for Western Hemisphere Affairs during the Biden administration. He said it was stunning to see the old posters of Maduro in Caracas being taken down and said Chavismo — the left-wing socialist ideology of Hugo Chávez and Nicolas Maduro — as dead and gone. But at this point, the Maduro regime remains intact — albeit minus Maduro himself.

Chevron, America’s second largest energy company, has continuously operated in Venezuela, including under the Maduro regime. The Trump administration has tried to urge the Rodríguez government to make regulatory changes to help usher in more investment to stabilize the country’s economy.

In an interview that will air on “Face the Nation” Sunday, Chevron CEO Mike Wirth said that progress has indeed been made by Rodríguez regarding changes to the country’s hydrocarbon laws, which effectively change the terms under which companies can invest in Venezuela.

“It still needs some work. It’s probably not enough to bring in the level of investment that would be desirable,” Wirth told CBS News. He spoke with CBS News before a meeting at the White House last week.

Venezuelan oil is the type of heavy crude that refineries along the Gulf Coast of the U.S. are designed to process. He said he supports changes to the system to increase energy production in Venezuela but described it as a “work in progress.” Wirth said Chevron maintains great employees in Venezuela but acknowledged that some of what he described as a very talented workforce had fled the country over the past two decades of Chavismo.

Wirth also told CBS News that he speaks to Secretary of State Marco Rubio and has heard him discuss the need to hold elections in due course in Venezuela. He did not share a timeline for that democratic transition. The U.S. has reestablished its diplomatic presence in Caracas and has appointed career foreign service officer John Barrett as chargé d’affaires.

The Trump administration has been tightlipped about the timeline for elections to be held. Multiple U.S. and Venezuelan officials indicated that it could be two to three years before the country is prepared for elections. The Trump administration has made stabilization of the country a top priority, with democracy a secondary goal. Rodríguez appears to be planning to finish out the remainder of Maduro’s six-year term, which could mean elections in 2030.

Opposition leader María Corina Machado told “Face the Nation” in February that a secure and precise timeline for a transition away from the Maduro regime is needed before exiles will feel safe enough to return. She has at least twice consulted with President Trump and recently with Rubio about her future plans to return to Venezuela. She confidently told CBS News that “I will be president when the time comes.”

Machado’s party won the last presidential election in 2024, according to the State Department, which assessed that 12 million Venezuelans peacefully went to the polls. Nonetheless, the Maduro-controlled National Electoral Council declared Maduro the winner, and his representatives then sought to arrest Edmundo Gonzalez (who stood in for Machado in the race) and Machado as part of what the U.S. described as a scheme to hold onto power.

Rodríguez – who was Maduro’s vice president — was officially recognized by the Trump administration as the “sole head of state” in March, nearly three months after a lightning U.S. military raid snatched Maduro in January and took him into U.S. custody on narcotrafficking charges linked to Cartel de los Soles.

The U.S. lifted sanctions on Rodríguez earlier this month, though Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello retains a $25 million U.S. government bounty on his head for his role in Cartel de los Soles, which is the same drug trafficking organization that the U.S. designated as a terror group. He ran Maduro’s repressive security apparatus but today remains a key figure in the government. Cabello, once Maduro’s chief thug, can now be seen sitting across from high level Trump officials in meetings discussing business deals.

US judge rejects Trump administration’s halt on immigration applications

Judge rules USCIS policies related to travel ban countries are unlawful
Preliminary injunction blocks enforcement for 22 plaintiffs, broader impact under discussion
Plaintiffs’ lawyer Jim Hacking says ruling is first to address both policies together

BOSTON, April 30 (Reuters) – A federal judge on Thursday ruled that policies that make it harder for ‌people from countries on President Donald Trump’s travel ban list to get green cards and work permits are discriminatory and unlawful.

U.S. District Judge Julia Kobick in Boston reached that conclusion, opens new tab as she issued a preliminary injunction in a lawsuit by around 200 people from 20 countries including Iran, Haiti, Venezuela and Syria who sued over a halt on the processing of their immigration-related applications.

The lawsuit, filed in December, took aim at policies U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services adopted beginning in November affecting applications by immigrants seeking asylum, green cards and work authorization.

Those policies have resulted in the agency placing a hold on the processing of applications from people from the 39 countries that are the subject of full or partial travel bans imposed by Trump, who has cited vetting and security concerns.

Before instituting that halt, the agency, which is overseen by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, adopted a policy in November 2025 that treats the nationality of people from those countries as a “significant negative factor” when reviewing their applications.

Kobick, who was appointed by Democratic President Joe Biden, concluded the plaintiffs were likely to succeed ‌in proving that policy ran afoul of the Immigration and Nationality Act’s bar against nationality-based discrimination.

The judge said the agency’s subsequent halt on reviewing asylum and naturalization applications was likewise “contrary to Congress’s command that the agency issue decisions on such applications.” She said the pause on reviewing green card and work authorization applications violated regulations governing them.

Kobick blocked USCIS from enforcing the policies against 22 plaintiffs who had provided declarations detailing how they were harmed by them, and she directed the parties to discuss whether her order should apply to the rest of the 200.

DHS did not respond to a request for comment.

Jim Hacking, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, welcomed the ruling, which he said appeared to be the first by a judge nationally to address the “significant negative factor” policy alongside the separate but related hold on the processing of applications. A handful of other judges have previously ruled against that halt in some migrants’ cases.

“USCIS wants to make it harder for people to receive an immigration benefit if they are from one of the 39 countries, even though Congress has never allowed them to,” he said.

A day after the Supreme Court further gutted the Voting Rights Act, Republican-led states are eying changes to boost the GOP’s gerrymandering effort at the expense of voters of color, while voting rights groups are trying to limit the impact of the ruling on this year’s midterms.

The Supreme Court kicked off the scramble by throwing out a Louisiana congressional map that had two Black-majority districts in an opinion that will make it significantly harder to challenge redistricting plans as discriminatory under the Voting Rights Act.

Leaders of Louisiana’s Republican-controlled legislature said they are preparing to draw a new congressional map to be used for November’s midterms, even as ballots have already put been in the mail for the May 16 primary. GOP officials said they won’t count the votes for US House candidates in the primary.

In Tennessee, top Republican officials faced growing public calls to launch a special legislative session with the goal of removing the state’s only Democratic congressman. Right-wing pressure for redistricting is also building in other states, including Georgia, South Carolina and Alabama.

Meanwhile, a group of Black voters who were defending Louisiana’s current congressional map cautioned the Supreme Court on Thursday against allowing the state to rush into a hasty redistricting based on the court’s decision.

“The governor has already indicated that he intends to cancel the ongoing Republican and Democratic primary elections in which voters have already cast ballots and on which candidates have already heavily expended their money, time, and resources,” the Black voters who were defending the maps told the Supreme Court, while citing past orders from the justices urging courts to be wary of disrupting election planning with last-minute moves.

“Such a drastic action,” the voters said, “is unnecessary and unwarranted.”

Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis on Wednesday was able to use the Supreme Court’s ruling to help get a congressional plan passed in that state that aims to turn four blue House seats red, after facing leeriness by both the state legislature and the congressional delegation.

Once the legislature passes a new redistricting plan, “it’s the starting line, not the finishing line,” for the officials who need to hurriedly rework their plans for administering the election, said David Becker, a former Justice Department voting attorney who now advises election officials.

That could include verifying that millions of voters are properly coded for their new districts and restarting the candidate qualification process.

The current tussling comes after President Donald Trump already injected enormous chaos into this electoral cycle by convincing Texas to embark on an unprecedented round of mid-decade redistricting – a move that started a gerrymandering arms race between Republicans and Democrats.

“In the partisan war that we are facing that the Supreme Court just inflamed, the parties caught in the middle are the election officials and the voters,” Becker said, “They’re not going to be any winners here.”

Trump join pressure campaign against longtime critic

The seat of Memphis-area US Rep. Steve Cohen, the sole Democrat in Tennessee’s congressional delegation and a major Trump critic, is now at risk with state lawmakers feeling the squeeze to draw him out of the district before an August primary.

In a social media post Thursday, Trump said he had spoken to the state’s GOP Gov. Bill Lee. Lee, he said, has pledged to “work hard to correct the unconstitutional flaw” in the state’s US House map. The president said other political leaders in the state also have agreed to take action.

A Lee spokesperson did not immediately respond to CNN’s inquiry. In a statement, Tennessee House Speaker Cameron Sexton said: “We are reviewing the recent opinion as I have conversations with the White House and other individuals.”

Under Tennessee law, the governor or the majority of members in both chambers of the state’s General Assembly would have to call the legislature back into a special session to redraw the House map.

Attempts to slow-roll Louisiana’s rush to redraw a Black Democrat’s House seat

Now pending before the Supreme Court is a technical but potentially meaningful procedural question about how quickly that ruling will take effect in Louisiana.

The group of White voters who challenged the second Black district filed an emergency request late Wednesday urging the court to make its decision final immediately, rather than waiting the month it would normally take to formally send the case back to a lower court for action.

But the voting rights group who lost the case told the justices on Thursday that there is “no urgency” for the Supreme Court to implement its decision and warned that doing so would cause confusion during an election that is already underway. It urged the court to hold off on taking further action until the election is over.

The appeal over timing is pending before Justice Samuel Alito, who handles emergency cases rising from Louisiana, Texas and other states covered by the 5th US Circuit Court of Appeals. It was also Alito who authored the 6-3 opinion striking down the state’s map.

Alito’s opinion Wednesday included no guidance on what should happen next in the case. In 2024, the Supreme Court blocked a lower court ruling striking down the state’s map. Either Alito or the broader court will have to decide whether that two-year-old order remains in effect or was effectively lifted by the Supreme Court’s decision on Wednesday.

Louisiana Rep. Cleo Fields, the Democrat whose district is at the center of the voting rights opinion, decried the move by state Republicans to suspend the primary.

“People are already voting,” Fields told CNN. “It adds insult to injury to come and say, ‘Your vote won’t be counted. We’re just going to change the districts. We’re going to stop the election.’”

A case over Mississippi’s judicial lines poses an early legal test

An early test to the Supreme Court ruling’s impact will be in Mississippi, where Black voters brought a successful Voting Rights Act challenge to the electoral boundaries for state supreme court seats. Proceedings in that case were under way this week to determine how a new judicial map should be drawn.

Senior District Judge Sharion Aycock has asked for additional briefs due next week on how the Supreme Court ruling affects the case.

An open question that election law scholars have been debating since the Supreme Court’s ruling is how it will apply in non-partisan elections.

Alito’s opinion sets up partisan gerrymandering as a defense that states can use to ward off VRA challenges. But because Mississippi’s judicial elections are non-partisan, that case could show how the new standard will work in non-partisan elections, which are common for local elected bodies.

Even before the ruling had come down, Republican Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves had told lawmakers he’d call a special legislative session to address how the Supreme Court’s opinion affects the judicial plan.
