Phone data reveals 42% drop in Canadian visits to U.S. last year

    May 12, 2026 12:22 PM EDT / CBS News

Toronto — The neighbors just aren’t visiting the way they used to.

A study by the University of Toronto suggests a roughly 42% reduction in visits to U.S. cities by residents of Canada last year. The drop much steeper than official border crossing statistics suggest is largely attributed to mounting political and trade tension between the two countries.

By tracking cellphone activity, University of Toronto researchers found “a year-over-year median decline of approximately 42% in Canadian visits to U.S. metropolitan areas.”

According to official statistics, the number of Canadians who entered the country after returning from the U.S. in 2025 was down 25%, while the number of U.S. residents visiting Canada dropped 75%.

According to the study, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, saw the biggest drop, with some 65% fewer Canadian residents coming home from the East Coast vacation hot spot. Yuma, Arizona, saw a 62% decrease. San Francisco and the Florida cities of Miami, Palm Bay and Panama City were among the other top 10 U.S. metro areas where the data indicates a more than 50% drop in visiting Canadians last year.

The study’s authors say, aside from the evident drop in vacation visits by Canadians, the data also reveals a sharp drop in visits to major economic hubs.

“High-tech and financial centers like San Francisco and Houston appear to be experiencing reductions not only in tourists but also in business-related travel, reflecting changing travel preferences due to broader economic uncertainties on both sides of the border,” the study says.

Since the start of President Trump’s second term in office, some Canadians have boycotted U.S. goods and travel in response to sweeping tariffs, stricter immigration policies, and controversial remarks by the American leader about making Canada the 51st U.S. state.

Early this year, tourism leaders in Florida were reaching out to their Canadian counterparts to try and boost travel amid the backlash to Mr. Trump’s policies and remarks.

“We’re doing what we can, just as we are with any country outside the United States, to make sure that visitation remains strong,” Visit Florida President and CEO Bryan Griffin said in February, ahead of meetings with Canadian officials.

In a deliberate bid to lure back Canadian visitors, some casinos and hotels in Las Vegas announced promotions earlier this year offering a currency exchange rate of “At Par” between U.S. and Canadian dollars through the end of August. Under the offer, $1 Canadian is equal to $1 U.S., despite the lower value of the Canadian currency.

Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Marty Makary is resigning from his position Tuesday, a White House official told Fox News Digital.

The official said that Makary’s resignation has to do with “process at the FDA” and not a specific issue, and said there is “no bad blood” between President Donald Trump and the outgoing commissioner. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. pushed for Makary’s resignation, according to the White House official.

Kyle Diamantis, FDA deputy commissioner for Food, will serve as acting commissioner, Fox News Digital learned.

Trump called Makary a “great guy” who is a friend of his in remarks to the media later on Tuesday afternoon.

“He’s a great doctor and he was having some difficulty, but he’s going to go on and he’s going to do well,” Trump told the media as he departed the White House for a high-stakes trip to China.

“I want to thank Dr. Marty Makary for having done a great job at the FDA,” Trump added in a Truth Social post on Tuesday. “So much was accomplished under his leadership. He was a hard worker, who was respected by all, and will go on to have an outstanding career in Medicine. Kyle Diamantas, a very talented person, will be put in the Acting position.”

Makary’s resignation followed mounting pressure from pro-life advocates and administration critics who had grown frustrated with his handling of several high-profile FDA decisions and claims he has slow-rolled MAHA initiatives, according to media reports in recent weeks.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that the president had reportedly already signed off on a plan to fire Makary, citing three familiar sources who cited Makary’s handling of abortion and drug policy.

“I’ve been reading about it, but I know nothing about it,” Trump said the same day after he was asked by reporters if Makary would be fired.

TRUMP CABINET SHAKEUP EXPANDS AFTER NOEM EXIT, BONDI FIRING — WHO’S UNDER PRESSURE NEXT?

The resignation comes one day before Makary was set to testify in front of the Senate Appropriations Committee Wednesday.

Though Makary’s resignation is not attributable to a specific issue, according to the White House official, his tenure atop the FDA has put him at the center of fights over abortion drug mifepristone – otherwise known as the “abortion pill” – vaccine policy and drug approvals, frustrating pro-life activists and MAHA-aligned critics who argued the agency has moved too slowly to carry out Trump’s health agenda.

When Trump was elected, pro-life groups and voters were banking on the administration rolling-back Biden-era rules that allowed mifepristone to be prescribed online and shipped through the mail. But the FDA left those rules intact and last year, under Makary’s leadership, approved a new generic version of the pill.

“President Trump and Health and Human Services Secretary Kennedy must end this now, remove Commissioner Makary, stop the mail order abortion scheme, and pull these child-killing drugs from the market,” said Live Action president Lila Rose to Fox News Digital ahead of Makary’s resignation.

“What a mess Makary turned out to be,” a Trump administration official told Fox News Digital earlier in May, claiming the commissioners’ comments and actions have told “every pro-life advocate their concerns are an afterthought.”

“The arrogance is stunning,” they added of the FDA commissioner.

Makary’s exit follows a series of high profile departures this year, including former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and former Attorney General Pam Bondi.(Andrew Harnik/Getty Images)

Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America President Marjorie Dannenfelser told the Wall Street Journal earlier in May that “Trump is the problem,” when it comes to the abortion issues falling off for the GOP in recent years.

And if candidates want her group’s $160 million in the midterms and 2028 presidential election, she said they must commit “to pro-life action at the national level.”

Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley said the resignation was “welcome news” in reaction on X Tuesday afternoon.

“Dr. Makary was uniquely destructive to the prolife movement,” Hawley wrote on X. “He attempted to place pro-abortion lawyers in key positions. He slow walked a vitally necessary review of the abortion drug mifepristone. He used his discretion to approve a new abortion drug when the data shows it sends 1 in 10 women to the emergency room. He froze out prolife leaders and repeatedly stonewalled Congress. His resignation is an opportunity for the FDA to reset.”

Memphis Grizzlies forward Brandon Clarke has died at the age of 29, the team announced Tuesday.

The team didn’t immediately provide details about the circumstances surrounding Clarke’s death.

“We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of Brandon Clarke,” the team said in a statement posted to social media. “Brandon was an outstanding teammate and an even better person whose impact on the organization and the greater Memphis community will not be forgotten.”

Democrats are going there on attacking the Supreme Court. Here’s what it could mean

    2026-05-12 2:57 PM ET / CNN

    Analysis by Aaron Blake

Supreme Court Donald Trump Supreme Court justices

Democrats haven’t been fans of the US Supreme Court since it became a 6-3 conservative majority in 2020. And they certainly haven’t been fans since it overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022 and gave Donald Trump a large grant of presidential immunity in 2024.

But after a pair of rulings allowing red Southern states to eliminate majority-Black districts — which Republicans are openly using to try and save their House majority — Democrats’ rhetoric has taken a turn.

Increasingly, they’re not just sharply criticizing the court; they’re attacking its legitimacy, calling it corrupt, painting it as overtly political and warning it will live in infamy.

Given recent court actions that have clearly benefitted Republicans, Democrats think that’s a fair and valid argument. But it’s not yet clear it’s a winning political one — and it’s one that, like President Donald Trump’s rhetoric about the justices, risks delegitimizing a key branch of government.

Some big-name Democrats’ comments have been remarkably pitched, signaling that they’re trying to apply pressure to the court or run against it, or both.

Sen. Ruben Gallego walks out of the Senate Chamber at the US Capitol on October 1, 2025.

    Andrew Harnik/Getty Images/File

“The Supreme Court is rigged,” posted Sen. Ruben Gallego, a potential 2028 contender. The Arizona Democrat also called it the “most partisan Supreme Court in the history of the nation.”

The office of California Gov. Gavin Newsom, another potential 2028 hopeful, posted on X that the court was “doing raw power politics” and, in the case of its Alabama ruling Monday, “meddling in elections AFTER votes have been cast.”

(The Alabama ruling came even though the state’s primaries had been scheduled for next week and absentee ballots had already gone out.)

“There’s a reason so many Americans have lost faith in the Trump Court and now view it as a partisan political entity — they have eyes,” Newsom’s office wrote.

Sen. Cory Booker speaks to the media at the US Capitol after briefings on March 3.

    Anna Moneymaker/Getty Images/File

Sen. Cory Booker of New Jersey, who ran for president in 2020, called the Supreme Court “a corrupt court” on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday.

And plenty of other Democrats weighed in with similar thoughts:

    • Rep. Ted Lieu of California called Chief Justice John Roberts “a political actor who is leading the most partisan Supreme Court in American history.”
    • Fellow California Rep. Ro Khanna called it a “morally bankrupt Court.”
    • Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont (an independent who caucuses with Democrats) called it a “reactionary Supreme Court.”
    • Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner said the “corrupt, far-right Supreme Court is busy remaking Congress in their image.”

The Supreme Court’s late-April ruling in a Louisiana case severely weakened the Voting Rights Act, giving Republicans a new tool in their overt effort to draw more GOP-leaning districts for the 2026 midterms.

And between the Louisiana and Alabama decisions, a pair of prominent Black Democrats compared the Roberts Court to the one led by Chief Justice Roger Taney, which wrote the infamous 1857 Dred Scott decision ruling Black people could not be citizens.

Rep. James Clyburn speaks during a budget hearing on Tuesday, June 10, 2025.

    Kevin Wolf/AP/File

“I think that Justice Roberts is going to take his place alongside some other infamous justices like Taney,” Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina, the former No. 3 House Democrat, told CNN’s Jake Tapper on Sunday.

After the Louisiana decision, former Democratic National Committee Chairman Jaime Harrison called the Roberts Court “the worst Supreme Court in American history. Yes, worse than the Taney Court. Full stop.”

(Harrison has been making this comparison for months, arguing the Roberts Court’s rollback of civil rights is more subtle and insidious than the Taney Court, but not less dangerous.)

It’s not totally new for Democrats to question the legitimacy of the court, especially after the end of Roe and the Trump immunity ruling, and knock it for being too far-right.

But today, a more pointed response — that often invokes the justices’ motives — seems to be more or less the standard talking point among many former and would-be Democratic presidential candidates.

Of course, Trump has spent years undercutting the legitimacy of the courts and savagely attacking rulings he dislikes. As recently as Sunday, he was publicly suggesting the three justices he appointed should be loyal to him (which isn’t how it’s supposed to work).

And there is a fine line between harsh criticism and unwarranted criticism. Democrats would argue the Supreme Court has earned what it’s getting from them.

There is no question that the court’s recent decision was a major win for Republicans. But beyond that, critics have noted the court has repeatedly set aside and overturned its own precedents — that is, cases that are supposed to guide how legal issues are decided — in ways that have frequently favored Republicans.

The limits – and potential impact – of Democrats’ strategy

Voting rights activists protest outside the Supreme Court ahead of arguments in a case challenging Louisiana’s congressional map.

    (Bill Clark/CQ Roll Call/AP/File

Right now, there is much more skepticism of the court on the left. But it doesn’t yet appear that large swaths of the country have bought into the idea that the court is hopelessly captured and illegitimate.

A poll last month from Reuters and Ipsos, which was conducted shortly before the Louisiana decision, showed Americans viewed the Supreme Court unfavorably 53%-43%.

The most recent polls from Gallup and Marquette Law School have shown the court with a similarly negative split.

That’s not great, but it’s not unusual given Americans have lost faith in many institutions.

For instance, the Reuters-Ipsos poll showed just 21% overall and 33% of Democrats had a “very unfavorable” view of the Supreme Court. The Marquette poll showed just 23% of Americans and less than a majority of Democrats (43%) strongly disapproved of the court.

Both surveys were notably conducted after the Supreme Court struck down Trump’s tariffs, a decision polls showed about two-thirds of Americans agreed with.

But it’s not clear an argument about the court’s illegitimacy speaks to swing voters — or at least, that it spoke to them before the Louisiana decision — even if it could motivate passionate portions of the Democratic base. It’s possible an argument about the court rolling back civil rights too quickly and helping Republicans decimate Black representation in Congress could ultimately register more broadly.

Still, Democrats are firing a Trump-esque warning shot to the court that they are willing to go there.

But the downside of that strategy is that it could further damage the court’s credibility in the eyes of the public. An NBC News poll in March showed a record-low 7% of Americans had a “great deal” of confidence in the Supreme Court, while about 4 in 10 had “very little” or no confidence in it.

In a body politic in which Congress doesn’t do much anymore, the big questions often boil down to whether the Supreme Court will check the president.

And if Americans don’t trust the courts to be that final arbiter, that’s a big problem for US democracy.

Explainer: What is in the US Senate’s landmark crypto bill?

May 12 (Reuters) – The U.S. Senate Banking Committee late on Monday unveiled the text of a long-awaited, landmark bill that would create a regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies ahead of a scheduled committee vote to advance the bill on Thursday.

Dubbed the Clarity Act, the bill aims to clarify financial regulators’ jurisdiction over the burgeoning sector, potentially boosting the adoption of digital assets. Here are five key provisions:

Jumpstart your morning with the latest legal news delivered straight to your inbox from The Daily Docket newsletter. Sign up here.

    Advertisement · Scroll to continue

    STABLECOIN ‌REWARDS

The most contentious provision of the bill deals with how crypto exchanges and other crypto players are allowed to pay rewards on dollar-backed crypto tokens called stablecoins.

The bill bans rewards on idle balances of stablecoins that closely resemble bank deposits, but would allow rewards on transaction-based activity, such as a payment via a stablecoin.

The Securities and Exchange Commission, the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Treasury Department would be required to issue joint rules to implement that provision.

Banks have pushed back on this provision, saying it could shift deposits away from the regulated banking system. Crypto companies say that prohibiting ‍third parties, such as crypto exchanges, from paying interest on stablecoins would be anti-competitive.

    Advertisement · Scroll to continue

    ANTI-MONEY LAUNDERING

The bill would require all digital commodity exchanges, brokers and dealers to be treated as financial institutions under the Bank Secrecy Act, which would compel them to comply with anti-money- laundering, customer identification and due-diligence requirements. That would put crypto firms largely under the same anti-money-laundering regime as banks, whereas some crypto firms have previously argued that they are not subject to the same rules.

    SEC FUNDRAISING EXEMPTION

Crypto companies would be allowed to raise up to $50 million a year – and up to $200 million in total – without having to register with the SEC, as other companies do when fundraising.

Crypto tokens tied to investment contracts could still be sold under this regime, but with a reduced regulatory burden compared with how securities are treated.

This exemption would limit the SEC’s ability to argue that most token ‌sales are illegal securities offerings, a stance taken by the regulator under former President Joe Biden’s administration and which many courts have also backed.

    DECENTRALIZED FINANCE

Many popular crypto platforms are “decentralized,” meaning that users interact directly with one another, in contrast to traditional exchanges, for example, which sit in between trades.

Decentralized platforms have argued that they are unable to comply with bank-like rules because those rules mostly assume there is a legal entity that sits in the middle of transactions and which holds customer funds.

The Clarity Act would define when a platform is sufficiently decentralized. If it does not meet the bar, it would be treated as a financial institution and would be required to report suspicious activity and monitor transactions, similar to banks.

Platforms would not be considered “decentralized” if they have the ability to block users, or if they have private permissions or hard-coded special privileges that other users do not have.

    TOKENIZATION

Tokenization generally refers to the process of turning financial assets – such as stocks, bonds and even real estate – into crypto assets. Crypto companies have been investing in tokenized stock trading ahead of expected moves by the SEC to allow companies to experiment with blockchain-based stock trading.

The bill would clarify that putting securities on the blockchain does not exempt them from securities laws. It also requires the SEC to further study the regulatory treatment of tokenized securities.

The bill would also mandate that, for regulatory purposes, tokenized securities generally be treated in the same way as the underlying securities they represent.

Pelosi, other Dems, and former Rep MTG dogpile on Trump over inflation, Iran war

    May 12, 2026 1:45pm EDT / Fox News

‘Not at all what America voted for,’ Marjorie Taylor Greene declared in a post on X.

    By Alex Nitzberg Fox News

Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., other Democratic lawmakers and former Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene targeted President Donald Trump while speaking out about inflation and the Iran war on Tuesday after the U.S. released new Consumer Price Index data.

“From the pump to the grocery store, the President’s reckless war of choice in Iran is hurting the American people. With inflation skyrocketing, working families are being forced to pay the price for Trump’s chaos — while he focuses on his billion-dollar ballroom,” Pelosi declared in a post on X.

Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., asserted in a post, “Trump promised to bring prices down. Prices under his policies are up. Inflation is 3.8 now. It was 3.0 when he started. His betrayal of his base in launching a war in Iran has been an absolute disaster.”

INFLATION CONTINUED TO RISE IN APRIL AS IRAN WAR IMPACTED ENGERY PRICES

Greene, a vociferous Trump critic who had previously been a staunch Trump ally, wrote, “Inflation is rising and gas is over $4.50 per gallon all because Trump went to war with Iran. Not at all what America voted for.”

The former House Republican departed from office in the middle of her two-year term earlier this year after a falling-out with the president.

The AAA national average price for regular gas is currently $4.504, which is below the record of $5.016 set in June of 2022 during President Joe Biden’s White House tenure.

JEFFRIES CALLS OUT TRUMP-ERA GAS PRICES AFTER TELLING REPUBLICANS NOT TO POLITICIZE PUMP PAIN UNDER BIDEN

“Inflation is accelerating because of Trump’s illegal war that is skyrocketing gas prices. We need to stop this war NOW,” Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., declared in a post on X.

Fox News Digital reached out to the White House for comment.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) on Tuesday said that the consumer price index (CPI) – a broad measure of how much everyday goods like gasoline, groceries and rent cost – rose 0.6% from a month ago and is 3.8% higher than last year. That’s the highest level since May 2023.

The June 2022 CPI report, which was released in July of that year during Biden’s presidency, stated, “The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) increased 1.3 percent in June on a seasonally adjusted basis after rising 1.0 percent in May,” noting, “Over the last 12 months, the all items index increased 9.1 percent before seasonal adjustment.”

Virginia GOP leader blasts ‘power-hungry’ Jeffries as Dems mount ‘insane’ gambit to overpower high court

    2026-05-12 12:09pm EDT / Fox News

Virginia Republicans are ‘crazy’ to believe they can ‘throw out judges for making the right decision’ on redistricting, the commonwealth’s top elected Republican told Fox News Digital.

EXCLUSIVE: Virginia Republicans blasted national and state Democrats over their “insane” ideas on how to reverse the Supreme Court of Virginia’s 4-3 ruling against their redistricting gambit, targeting House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and other national Democrats’ latest intercession.

The New York Times reported Monday on a meeting between national and Virginia Democrats to discuss ways to revive their now-blocked 10-1 map, drawing sharp backlash.

“It is insane — is my first take on that, because I mean, it would be crazy to throw out judges for making the right decision,” said Virginia House Minority Leader Terry Kilgore, R-Gate City.

“That would just be beyond the pale. I think a lot of Virginians would see through that. And it’s too late for them to do it as a matter of law,” he said, citing a May 12 pre-primary deadline.

The report claimed Jeffries, D-N.Y., was party to discussions that ranged from lowering the retirement age of state justices to ostensibly re-trying the case before a handpicked court, as well as using the otherwise Republican-favorable ruling out of Tazewell County.

The Tazewell decision — from Judge Jack Hurley — initially invalidated the redistricting referendum, but SCOVA allowed the vote to proceed. The Times reported Democrats are considering using Hurley’s reasoning to instead invalidate the 2020 referendum that created the independent redistricting commission they tried to circumvent with their April vote.

“That just shows you how power-hungry Hakeem Jeffries and his Democrats are up there, and I’m glad the Supreme Court followed the rule of law, and it was a good day for Virginia,” Kilgore said.

Democrats disagreed, with Virginia Senate Majority Leader Scott Surovell, D-Mount Vernon, announcing an emergency application for relief was made to the Supreme Court of the United States by late Monday.

Surovell said in a statement that the response was brought by himself, House Speaker Don Scott, D-Portsmouth, and Senate President Pro Tem L. Louise Lucas, D-Portsmouth.

VIRGINIA GOP, DEMS BATTLE IT OUT OVER REDISTRICTING BEFORE STATE SUPREME COURT

Critics pointed out the haste with which the case was filed, evinced by several visible typos on the first page.

The case was filed with SCOTUS, but the page itself indicated in its second reference that it was filed to the “Supreme Court of Virginia.”

Senate Minority Leader Ryan McDougle, R-Hanover, the original plaintiff, was labeled as a “Sentator” — leading to potato memes from critics on X, while a Virginia political commentary account renamed itself “Virgnia Sentator” over that and a second misspelling in Scott’s title.

In a Thursday statement following the original ruling, Scott said he “respect[ed]” it and said the close vote showed Virginians wanted to “fight back” against President Donald Trump — and that Virginia Democrats will “keep fighting for a democracy where voters — not politicians — have the final say.”

Rep. Ben Cline, R-Va., whose Shenandoah Valley district was primed to be chopped in three, agreed with Kilgore in a statement saying Jeffries and national Democrats are “furious” at SCOVA for “up[holding] the rule of law.”

Cline urged Virginians to get involved politically, warning of what he called an “illegal” Democratic push to reshape the maps.

Kilgore dismissed the idea of using the Tazewell ruling to dismantle the redistricting commission as “grasping at straws,” noting the panel has already drawn state-legislative districts without challenge.

Amid the current battle, neighboring West Virginia lawmakers launched a bid to allow some of Virginia’s more conservative, rural communities to secede from the Old Dominion, as the Mountaineer State itself did on June 20, 1863.

Kilgore’s delegate district comprised a large swath of the mountainous country featured in maps put out by proponents in Charleston.

“I think that’s a little bit premature,” Kilgore responded. “I took an oath to uphold the Constitution of Virginia, and I’m going to stay right here and take Virginia back.”

“We can take Virginia back, as you saw the close vote in the yes-no. That’s where Virginians are. We’re a close state. We’re a purple state.”

Kilgore said he expects Virginia voters to “swing back hard” toward Republicans in response to the hijinks playing out so far this year – which could create a purple-state pendulum just in time for Trump’s own effort to hold the House of Representatives in November.
