April 13 (Reuters) – A Texas man was charged with hurling a Molotov cocktail at the home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and attempting to set fire to the AI firm’s headquarters.

Daniel Moreno-Gama, 20, was captured on surveillance video ‌throwing an incendiary device outside Altman’s San Francisco residence, according to a Federal Bureau of Investigation affidavit filed in federal court on Monday.

They said Moreno-Gama was carrying a self-authored “anti-AI” document when the San Francisco Police Department arrested him.

According to the FBI, the document Moreno-Gama wrote – which was cited as evidence of motive – contained threats directed at Altman.

“We are only at the beginning of this investigation, but if the evidence shows that Mr. Moreno-Gama executed these attacks to change public policy or to coerce government and other officials, we will treat this as an act of domestic terrorism and together with our law enforcement partners prosecute him to the fullest extent allowed by law,” U.S. Attorney Craig Missakian said in a statement.

OpenAI faces growing scrutiny for its role in national security, ‌including criticism of a proposed deal with the U.S. government to allow its artificial intelligence technology to be used in classified military operations.

Moreno-Gama is charged with attempted damage and destruction of property by means of explosives and possession of an unregistered firearm.

Police said he traveled from Texas to California before carrying out the attacks and they recovered multiple incendiary devices, kerosene and a lighter at the time of his arrest.

Moreno-Gama told security personnel at the company’s headquarters that he intended to burn the building and harm the people inside, according to court records.

If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and up to 20 years in prison on the explosives charge, and up to 10 years in prison on the unregistered firearm charge, court filings showed.

Fed chief nominee Warsh clears one hurdle for Senate hearing, CNBC reports

April 13 (Reuters) – Federal Reserve chair nominee Kevin Warsh has submitted required paperwork to the U.S. Senate, putting him one step closer to a hearing in the chamber and his eventual installation as ‌Jerome Powell’s successor, CNBC reported on Monday, citing two sources familiar with the matter.

Reuters could not immediately verify the report, and Warsh’s financial disclosures had not been posted on the U.S. Office of Government Ethics’ website as of late on Monday.

A spokesman for the Senate Banking Committee, which typically would require a nominee’s financial disclosures to be in hand before scheduling a hearing, declined to comment.

The panel also requires nominees to fill out a questionnaire, though at times has scheduled a hearing without this part of the paperwork in hand. Its rules require five business days’ notice to schedule a hearing, making next week the earliest possible timing for Warsh to appear before the committee.

Even once the hearing is scheduled, it is unclear ‌how quickly Warsh could be confirmed by the full Senate.

A key Republican lawmaker has vowed to block Warsh’s confirmation until the conclusion of a Department of Justice investigation into Powell for his oversight of renovations to the Fed’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. There’s little indication of progress so far on that matter.

Though a federal judge quashed the DOJ’s subpoenas, finding the probe to be a thinly disguised effort to pressure Powell to lower interest rates or resign, the department has said it will appeal that decision.

Powell’s tenure as head of the Fed ends on May 15, and he has said he will continue to fill the role on a “pro tem” basis if Warsh is not confirmed and in place by that time.

JD Vance had two high-profile opportunities to prove himself. Both fell flat

    2026-04-13 6:56 PM ET / CNN

    Analysis by Aaron Blake

In the latter half of 2025, Vice President JD Vance’s future as the next Republican presidential nominee was looking fairly promising. That culminated in December, when potential rival and Secretary of State Marco Rubio signaled he wouldn’t even challenge the VP if Vance ran.

But since then, events — and Vance’s handling of them — have raised more and more questions about that possibility. Including a pair of high-profile failures over the weekend.

In the span of just a few days, Vance was dispatched to stump for Hungarian President Viktor Orbán in his country’s parliamentary elections and to negotiate a peace deal with Iran in Pakistan.

    Neither came close.

    Orbán’s defeat

Orbán’s party was soundly beaten in this weekend’s elections.

The Trump administration has made a habit of involving itself in foreign elections, and it had a pretty strong track record recently. It supported the winners of elections in Poland in June, Argentina in October, Honduras in December and Japan in February.

(Making the foreign interventions more problematic, the administration also often put its thumb on the scale — like by dangling a $20 billion bailout in front of voters in Argentina.)

But it went very wrong in Hungary, especially given the Trump administration’s repeated and incredibly public intervention that concluded with Vance’s high-profile, election-eve visit.

Vice President JD Vance speaks during a news conference after meeting with representatives on April 12, 2026, in Islamabad, Pakistan.

    Jacquelyn Martin/Pool/AP

Of course, Orbán was down in the polls before Vance arrived. He acknowledged in an interview with Fox News on Monday night that the administration knew there was a “very good chance” that Orbán would lose, but said he went anyway because it was “the right thing to do, to stand behind a person who had stood by us for a very long time.”

Despite the vice president’s best efforts, the party of Orbán’s opponent, Péter Magyar, won a supermajority.

It served as a reminder that, however much Trump has invested in Vance, he’s never proved terribly exciting or compelling to voters in his own right. Vance opened his campaign speech in Hungary by calling Trump and was sent to voicemail before getting through to the president on a second try.

    Iran negotiations

The other major setback came during Vance’s visit to Islamabad to negotiate a potential end to the Iran war.

In the days before, it looked like the administration was quite a bit more anxious to negotiate than the Iranians. And the two sides weren’t even able to agree on what the terms were of the ceasefire they had agreed to, hours after it began.

In other words, it didn’t appear the two sides were particularly close to agreeing on a long-term peace. And the immediate results of those talks support that assumption.

It’s certainly possible the two sides can eventually come together. And maybe Vance will ultimately have played a major role in crafting a peace deal that he can then hail as a signal of his political fortitude.

But the Iran war is an increasingly sizable problem for Vance’s aspirations.

After the vice president built a reputation for himself as a committed noninterventionist, Trump has in recent months set about a very different type of approach. That includes not just the Iran war but also his efforts to take over Greenland and the military operation that ousted Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.

US Vice President JD Vance meets with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for talks about Iran in Islamabad, Pakistan, on April 11, 2026.

    Jacquelyn Martin/Pool/Reuters

Vance’s response has been to, well, try to have it both ways.

Word keeps leaking out of the administration that Vance hasn’t wholeheartedly supported the war, and he’s been remarkably careful about his public commentary. But he’s also insisted he trusts Trump’s judgment. He initially resisted the war, but also said if they were going to do it, they should hit Iran hard.

It’s an approach that seems calculated to alienate nobody, but that might ultimately please about the same number of people.

If the war backfires politically on Republicans, is Vance going to win people over by arguing that he politely and privately disagreed? And if it remains popular among Republicans, there wouldn’t seem to be much of a market for Vance’s foreign policy in the first place.

He’s also just attained some real ownership over the results of a war that appears fraught and highly unpredictable right now.

“So, if [a peace deal] doesn’t happen, I’m blaming JD Vance,” Trump quipped recently, to laughter. “If it does happen, I’m taking full credit.”

A joke — but one that might have some truth buried in it.

As Trump has delved further into this more aggressive and militaristic foreign policy, there’s a real risk that the party could opt for someone more aligned with that approach in the future.

It would seem no coincidence that the more hawkish Rubio gained substantial ground in the Conservative Political Action Conference straw poll two weeks ago — going from 3% in 2025 to 35% this year.

Vance still won the straw poll, which is unscientific and focused on a very small but passionate element of the conservative base. But he dropped from 61% to 53% and saw his margin of victory shrink substantially.

The political appeal of being vice president is self-evident; it’s who people think of when they think about who’s next in line.

But that also means vice presidents sometimes have to be associated with things they’d rather not be — and that they often get saddled with jobs that don’t do them many favors. (See: Harris, Kamala.) They can also shoulder the blame for failures — and presidencies — they have little real control over.

Vance is getting a hefty dose of that now. And it should serve as a reminder that no campaign is over a year before it begins.

    • Summary
    • Trump administration has been critical of judges who rule against government
    • Trump has pursued a hardline immigration crackdown
    • Trump administration has cracked down on pro-Palestinian voices

WASHINGTON, April 13 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration has fired more immigration judges, including two who blocked the federal government’s deportation attempts against pro-Palestinian ‌students, a union representing immigration judges said.

The National Association of Immigration Judges said on Monday that overall, six immigration judges were fired last weekend and three were fired on Good Friday.

“With these most recent terminations, 113 immigration judges have now been fired since January of last year without due process, cause or explanation,” the union said, calling the firings “wrong and unjust.” It was very rare for immigration judges to be fired before Trump returned to the White House, the union said.

Massachusetts judges Roopal Patel and Nina Froes had blocked the Trump administration’s attempts to deport Tufts University PhD student Rumeysa Ozturk and Columbia University student Mohsen Mahdawi, respectively.

The judges could not immediately be reached for comment. Patel, a Boston immigration court judge, and Froes, a Chelmsford immigration court judge, both received notice near the end of their standard-two year probationary periods when they were fired on Friday, they both told GBH News. Both were appointed during former President Joe Biden’s administration.

The Trump administration has pursued an immigration crackdown condemned by rights groups as being in violation ‌of due process and free speech. Advocacy groups say it has created an unsafe environment for minorities.

Trump has particularly cracked down on pro-Palestinian voices by attempting to deport foreign students, threatening funding freeze for universities where protests were held and ordering screening of immigrants’ online comments. The crackdown has faced judicial obstacles.

The Trump administration has openly criticized judges when they have ruled against the government.

“All judges have a legal, ethical, and professional obligation to be impartial and neutral in adjudicating cases,” a Justice Department official said in a statement on Monday when asked about the latest firings.

“If a judge violates that obligation by demonstrating a systematic bias in favor of or against either party, EOIR (the Justice Department’s Executive Office for Immigration Review) is obligated to take action to preserve the integrity of its system,” the statement added, without providing evidence this occurred.

Trump alleges pro-Palestinian students are antisemitic and support extremists. Demonstrators, including some Jewish groups, say he wrongly conflates criticism of Israel’s assault on Gaza and its occupation of Palestinian territories with antisemitism, and advocacy for Palestinian rights with support for extremism.

Sharron Simmons, the first DoorDash employee to ever deliver a meal to the White House, said she hopes that the benefits she’s reaping from President Donald Trump’s no-tax-on-tips policy will extend past its current 2028 lifespan.

Well, obviously, we would like for it to continue, but I’m going to enjoy it while I’ve got it. And, you know, it’s not for me to decide that,” she told Fox News Digital during a Monday interview shortly after delivering a McDonald’s order to Trump.

Overall, Simmons says she believes she’s taking home more than $11,000 in extra income.

“I figure that I’m probably going to be saving about $3,000 to $4,000,” Simmons said.

SCOOP: TRUMP’S ‘BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL’ TAX CUTS PROMOTED IN NEW REPUBLICAN AD BLITZ

Simmons’ story is one of the many ways the White House has attempted to highlight its work through Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill, the president’s signature tax and border security package.

Alongside tax breaks for tips, that bill also temporarily eliminated tax obligations for overtime pay, increased the senior deduction to $12,000 and upped the child tax credit by $200 per child.

Critics of the package have argued that the tax breaks are cutting down the country’s revenue and contributing to the national deficit, while its supporters contend it will grow the economy by putting more back in the hands of consumers.

SEN TIM SCOTT: REPUBLICANS JUST GETTING STARTED, BUT NEED TIME TO STOP RADICAL LEFTISTS

Simmons originally joined DoorDash as a way to generate a little extra revenue on the side, stating that she began her partnership with DoorDash because of its flexibility after the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I’ve been doing DoorDash since 2022. And I just got into it because it was something that after COVID and everything, I didn’t have to go into an office. And I kind of felt like by doing this, I would be able to help other people,” Simmons explained.

Despite the future uncertainty of the policy’s current timeline, Simmons said she would focus on the present moment.

“[In] younger years, I didn’t feel like my voice could be heard. And I feel now like we are heard,” Simmons said.
