Este es tu estado。”

California Democratic gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra advanced to the state’s general election Friday night, according to an Associated Press race call.

The AP called the race for Becerra at 7:50 p.m. EDT, sending the former U.S. health secretary and ex-California attorney general into the November contest to succeed term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton appeared headed for a November showdown. AP vote totals showed Becerra with 26.7% of the vote and Hilton with 26.4%, while Democrat Tom Steyer finished third with 21.0%.

In a statement following the race call, Becerra touted the result as a victory for working Californians and said his campaign would carry its message into the fall election.

“The people of the great state of California, in the greatest nation on earth, have spoken — loudly and proudly,” Becerra said. “We will not be bought. We will not be bullied. And we are never backing down. November, here we come.”

Becerra’s campaign also said the result makes him the first Latino candidate to advance from a California gubernatorial primary to a general election, calling it a historic milestone for the state.

If elected in November, Becerra would become California’s first Latino governor since Romualdo Pacheco, who briefly served as governor in 1875.

In a post on X after the race was called, Becerra wrote, “More than ever, California needs our voices and our values. To the people and the voters of California, this is your state. Este es tu estado.”

Why a 55-mile Appalachian Trail trek is a mandatory rite of passage for these New Jersey freshmen

Newark, New Jersey — The New Jersey city of Newark is no national park. For many, the only sights are the bumpers ahead while sitting in traffic, and the only hikes are at the whim of a walk sign.

Yet here, of all places, is St. Benedict’s Preparatory School, a private high school that requires students to step way outside their urban comfort zone.

The students, many of whom have never been hiking or camping, are sent to the Appalachian Trail for five days with only “some adult supervision,” according to St. Benedict’s Prep school administrator Glenn Cassidy, who said he’s “willing to put money” that St. Benedict’s is the only school in the U.S. with such a program.

“[There is] some adult supervision, there might be some insurance companies watching right now,” Cassidy joked to CBS News. “But, yeah, the teams generally hike independently.”

The program is a mandatory rite of passage for all freshmen. They start training in early spring with exercise and teambuilding. Then they are broken into smaller units with a captain, a camp specialist, navigators, cooks and medics.

Each student is trained in a specialty, but none of them know everything they need to survive.

“We’ll learn how to work together in different ways and finish the task at hand,” one student preparing to complete the hike last month said.

Students from St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark, New Jersey, complete a 55-mile Appalachian Trail hike. May 2026. CBS News

“The idea is that they have to rely on one another,” Cassidy explained. “The only way we can get through this is if we work together and make it there.”

The 55-mile trek is now a 53-year tradition at St. Benedict’s. They do it shine or rain. In fact, the administration actually prefers rain.

“When life gets difficult, it’s something you can refer back to,” Cassidy said. “You know, there’s a lot of rainy days in life.”

In a world of helicopter parenting, this school still makes students rise on their own. And when they do, it is quite a sight. After five days of ups and downs, the students finished their hike in May and officially became sophomores.

Some were bruised. All were weary. Their shoes will never be the same. But neither will they, which was the real destination all along.

Trump pardons former US congressman convicted of securities fraud

    June 6, 2026 1:58 AM UTC / Reuters

WASHINGTON, June 5 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump has pardoned former U.S. Representative Stephen Buyer, an Indiana Republican, who was convicted of securities fraud for engaging in insider trading in 2018 as a T-Mobile US ‌consultant ahead of a $23 billion merger with Sprint.

The proclamation, issued on Thursday and announced by the White House on Friday, gave no specific rationale for the pardon other than to assert that Buyer’s service as a U.S. Army judge advocate general and member of Congress “was distinguished and highly productive.”

The Reuters Daily Briefing newsletter provides all the news you need to start your day. Sign up here.

It also said that Trump, in granting Buyer a “full, complete and unconditional pardon,” was acting on the “advice and recommendation” of 52 current and former members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives listed in the proclamation.

Buyer served in the House as a Republican from Indiana between 1993 and 2011 before working as a corporate consultant. He was found guilty in March of 2023 on four counts of securities fraud, and was sentenced in September of that year to 22 months in prison.

Prosecutors said ‌at trial that Buyer bought Sprint stock after learning from a T-Mobile executive that the telecommunications companies were in merger talks in 2018 and made illegal trades again the following year.

According to prosecutors, Buyer made more than $100,000 from the Sprint trades and more than $200,000 from buying stock in Navigant Consulting Inc. before it was acquired by Guidehouse in 2019.

Buyer, who had served as one of the House managers in the 1999 impeachment trial of then-President Bill Clinton, took the stand at his own trial and denied trading on inside information.

Prosecutors sought three years in prison for Buyer in court filings, saying that he had abused his clients’ trust and lied on the stand.

The U.S. Supreme Court refused in May of this year to hear Buyer’s appeal of his conviction.

Democrat Xavier Becerra advances in California governor’s race

    June 5, 2026 at 8:16 p.m. EDT / The Washington Post

Steve Hilton, a Republican, still leads Tom Steyer, a Democrat, for the second spot in the general election.

Former health secretary Xavier Becerra, a Democrat who pulled off a stunning rise late in the California governor’s race, will advance to the general election, the Associated Press projected Friday.

It’s unclear who will meet Becerra on the November ballot. Republican Steve Hilton, a former Fox News host, and billionaire climate activist Tom Steyer are in the best position to advance, but it could take days or longer before the race is called as the state keeps tallying mailed ballots that were postmarked by the Tuesday primary.

In California primaries, all candidates run on the same ballot regardless of party affiliation. The top two vote-getters go to the general election.

This year’s race to succeed term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) featured a massive group of candidates, leading both Democrats and Republicans to worry their party would be locked out of the general election because votes would be split many ways.

The crowded field made it harder for the gubernatorial candidates to distinguish themselves. Beyond that, they lacked the political or movie-screen stardom that go a long way in building name recognition in the most populous state with nearly 40 million residents.

In April, the Democratic candidates got an unexpected chance to reset when former congressman Eric Swalwell, who had started to pull ahead in the race, dropped out after allegations of sexual assault and misconduct.

Becerra’s campaign arguably benefited the most from the frenzy.

After lackluster polling and little attention to his campaign, Becerra began an unexpected ascent to become the Democratic front-runner. The former longtime California congressman was seen by voters as a stable pick with a deep political résumé. If elected, Becerra would become the first Latino governor in modern history in a 41 percent Latino state.

With his primary win, Becerra surmounted criticism that he was an unexciting candidate too aligned with establishment Democrats. But his allies said him being boring was an asset, making him a reliable choice for voters in an increasingly chaotic primary.

Becerra, who focused his campaign on addressing California’s economic struggles, is more moderate than his closest Democratic rival, Steyer, who spent more than $200 million of his own money on a populist campaign calling for universal health care and raising taxes on billionaires.
