Graham Platner says his past has been ‘weaponized’ at rally in Maine

    2026-06-06 01:33:07 / The Washington Post

Supporters brush off negative stories about the Democratic Senate candidate and rebut suggestions that he is the wrong person to take on GOP Sen. Susan Collins.

    June 5, 2026 at 9:33 p.m. EDT Today at 9:33 p.m. EDT

    By Liz Goodwin

BAR HARBOR, Maine — Democrat Graham Platner thanked hundreds of cheering supporters not far from his hometown for supporting him as his Senate campaign faces intense scrutiny and criticism.

“Maine, you have my back,” Platner, 41, said, as his supporters stood and cheered. “As every single piece of my past and journey gets dug up, litigated and weaponized, you have my back”

The rally with Rep. Ro Khanna (D-California) and other Democratic candidates at a theater in this resort town comes as Platner battles a spate of tough news accounts of his past and as a few Democrats in Washington have begun publicly suggesting he is not the right person to try to oust Republican Sen. Susan Collins in a race that is crucial to Democrats’ bid to flip the Senate.

“We’re going to need to have each others’ backs because we are in the fight of our lives,” Platner said, dismissing some allegations made against him as false and “politically motivated.”

Over the past week, Platner has faced down stories that revealed he sent sexually explicit texts to multiple women despite being married and another in which three women told the New York Times they had volatile relationships with Platner in the past.

One ex-girlfriend alleged that he once physically restrained her. Platner has denied the ex-girlfriend’s claims that he ever was violent with her, and he and his team have said her work as a Republican activist discredits her. The Washington Post has not independently verified her claims of violence.

One of Platner’s supporters in the crowd, Karen Svenson, said the recent allegations of texting women while married bothered her, but she was impressed by how he responded this week.

“He told us back to our faces that he is a changed man, and who has the guts to say that?” Svenson said.

Platner and his wife, Amy Gertner, have said the texts were a personal matter that they worked through in therapy since their marriage in 2023. Supporters gave her a standing ovation during the event and chanted her name.

Graham Platner, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate, acknowledges supporters Friday at a campaign event in Bar Harbor, Maine. (Robert F. Bukaty/AP)

Platner is heavily favored to win the June 9 Democratic primary. Gov. Janet Mills suspended her campaign in April after failing to gain traction. This week, Mills reminded people that she is still on the ballot, and her supporters are hoping she will receive a sizable protest vote as Platner’s troubles mount.

But Platner’s supporters on Friday night dismissed the notion that someone else might step in as the Democratic nominee, calling it fantasy. Many cited the bond Platner has built with his supporters as he crisscrossed the state over the past few months with his populist message of sweeping change to empower the working class.

“They’re going to have to bring an army if they think they’re going to get rid of Graham,” said Kathleen Grover, a 73-year-old retiree who came to see him speak. “He’s not going to go.”

Khanna, who has become a leading advocate in Congress for women who accused disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein of abuse, walked a fine line in his speech defending Platner, saying Platner was not perfect but had owned his mistakes.

“No one should make excuses for his past relationships, some of which were toxic and volatile,” Khanna said. “And no one on our side should attack the women who came forward.”

But Khanna added the United States “broke” young men like Platner, a combat veteran who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, by sending them to war. “If someone felt hurt by Graham in a past relationship, we can listen to them, and we can listen to Graham,” Khanna said.

Platner has survived controversies before. He weathered reporting on his deleted Reddit comments insulting rural Mainers and downplaying the seriousness of sexual assault in the military. Platner also changed a Nazi-linked tattoo on his chest last year after he said he first became aware of its connotations during his campaign. He disavowed many of the Reddit comments and said he made them when he was battling untreated PTSD.

Judge blocks Trump administration’s attempt to link USDA funds to compliance with other policies

    • Judge grants injunction sought by 20 Democratic attorneys general
    • States argued USDA conditions threatened $74 billion in nutrition and farm aid
    • Plaintiffs claim USDA lacked authority and violated U.S. Constitution

June 5 (Reuters) – A judge on Friday blocked the U.S. Department of Agriculture from withholding tens of billions of dollars in federal funds from states ‌unless they complied with the Trump administration’s policies on immigration enforcement, transgender people and other issues.

U.S. District Judge Myong Joun granted the preliminary injunction sought by Democratic attorneys general from 20 states and the District of Columbia. Joun, appointed by Democratic President Joe Biden to the federal court in Boston, said he would issue a memorandum explaining his decision at a later date.

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell celebrated the ruling in a post on her Bluesky social media account, writing, “These grants are a lifeline — I’ll always fight to protect food assistance for families.”

Spokespersons for the Justice Department and USDA did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Friday’s ruling is one of several court decisions that have blocked the Trump administration’s efforts to place new conditions on grants that would align funding with the Republican president’s priorities.

The Democratic-led states and the capital district alleged that Trump’s new requirements would jeopardize funding already approved by Congress to feed low-income families and support farmers. The states receive more than $74 billion annually from USDA.

USDA at the end of last year said states must certify compliance with federal “policies” to receive funding. The attorneys general alleged that USDA’s ‌requirement was too vague and would require them to comply with unrelated matters outlined in Trump executive orders concerning “gender ideology,” immigration, transgender athletes and diversity, equity and inclusion.

USDA’s conditions could affect nutrition programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the anti-poverty food stamp program, as well as the school lunch program and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children, the plaintiffs said. They alleged the USDA lacked authority to impose the new conditions, which they say violate the U.S. Constitution’s Spending Clause and went into effect without going through required legal procedures.

The Trump administration contends that if states are required to abide by federal antidiscrimination laws and regulations in order to receive funds, it should also apply to other “policies.”

Este es tu estado。”

California Democratic gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra advanced to the state’s general election Friday night, according to an Associated Press race call.

The AP called the race for Becerra at 7:50 p.m. EDT, sending the former U.S. health secretary and ex-California attorney general into the November contest to succeed term-limited Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton appeared headed for a November showdown. AP vote totals showed Becerra with 26.7% of the vote and Hilton with 26.4%, while Democrat Tom Steyer finished third with 21.0%.

In a statement following the race call, Becerra touted the result as a victory for working Californians and said his campaign would carry its message into the fall election.

“The people of the great state of California, in the greatest nation on earth, have spoken — loudly and proudly,” Becerra said. “We will not be bought. We will not be bullied. And we are never backing down. November, here we come.”

Becerra’s campaign also said the result makes him the first Latino candidate to advance from a California gubernatorial primary to a general election, calling it a historic milestone for the state.

If elected in November, Becerra would become California’s first Latino governor since Romualdo Pacheco, who briefly served as governor in 1875.

In a post on X after the race was called, Becerra wrote, “More than ever, California needs our voices and our values. To the people and the voters of California, this is your state. Este es tu estado.”

Why a 55-mile Appalachian Trail trek is a mandatory rite of passage for these New Jersey freshmen

Newark, New Jersey — The New Jersey city of Newark is no national park. For many, the only sights are the bumpers ahead while sitting in traffic, and the only hikes are at the whim of a walk sign.

Yet here, of all places, is St. Benedict’s Preparatory School, a private high school that requires students to step way outside their urban comfort zone.

The students, many of whom have never been hiking or camping, are sent to the Appalachian Trail for five days with only “some adult supervision,” according to St. Benedict’s Prep school administrator Glenn Cassidy, who said he’s “willing to put money” that St. Benedict’s is the only school in the U.S. with such a program.

“[There is] some adult supervision, there might be some insurance companies watching right now,” Cassidy joked to CBS News. “But, yeah, the teams generally hike independently.”

The program is a mandatory rite of passage for all freshmen. They start training in early spring with exercise and teambuilding. Then they are broken into smaller units with a captain, a camp specialist, navigators, cooks and medics.

Each student is trained in a specialty, but none of them know everything they need to survive.

“We’ll learn how to work together in different ways and finish the task at hand,” one student preparing to complete the hike last month said.

“The idea is that they have to rely on one another,” Cassidy explained. “The only way we can get through this is if we work together and make it there.”

The 55-mile trek is now a 53-year tradition at St. Benedict’s. They do it shine or rain. In fact, the administration actually prefers rain.

“When life gets difficult, it’s something you can refer back to,” Cassidy said. “You know, there’s a lot of rainy days in life.”

In a world of helicopter parenting, this school still makes students rise on their own. And when they do, it is quite a sight. After five days of ups and downs, the students finished their hike in May and officially became sophomores.

Some were bruised. All were weary. Their shoes will never be the same. But neither will they, which was the real destination all along.
