Will SpaceX’s IPO soar or sputter? Past IPOs offer clues.

    2026-06-10 15:35 EDT / CBS News

    By

    June 10, 2026 / 3:35 PM EDT / CBS News

Previous large initial public offerings suggest SpaceX investors could be in for a bumpy ride after Elon Musk’s rocket company goes public on Friday.

Companies staging major IPOs often see their share price surge over the first several days or weeks of trading, but then return to earth. Such stocks routinely fall below their offering price after a year.

“Historically, major IPOs have tended to have a good deal of volatility over the first 12 months,” said Sam Grelck, an equity strategy analyst at Truist Advisory Services, a unit of Truist Financial. “Even those that have performed well in many cases have tended to have pretty significant drawdowns at some point.”

To be sure, there are exceptions. For example, shares of online video company Zoom Communications soared after their 2019 market debut and remained 142% to the good after the offering, according to Truist data.

Over the longer term, IPOs are a crapshoot. A Truist analysis of 30 sizable technology IPOs over the past 15 years found that the companies had an average maximum loss of 55% in their first year of trading. More than half of those offerings posted negative returns a year after their debut.

“The near term — so one week, one month, three months — is stronger,” Grelck said. “As you get to longer horizons, those drawdowns and the negative returns start to come in a little bit more.”

Separate data from Jay Ritter, an IPO expert and professor at the University of Florida’s Warrington College of Business, also underscores the inherent risk in public offerings. The average three-year market-adjusted return for investors who bought shares at a company’s closing price on its first day of trading is -21%, Ritter found in research spanning more than 9,200 IPOs from 1980 to 2024.

SpaceX priced its stock at $135 and expects to raise $75 billion, making it the largest-ever IPO. After the offering, the company is projected to be valued at $1.77 trillion.

By comparison, that would make it larger than Musk’s electric car maker, Tesla, which has a market value of $1.5 trillion; Meta Platforms ($1.4 trillion); and Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway ($1.04 trillion).

“IPOs go up 19% [on average] on the first day of trading from the offer price, so in this deal that would correspond to about $30 a share,” Ritter told CBS News. “The return is going to be much better if your purchase price was at $135 than $165.”

“Investors buying in are only going to make a decent return if the company grows its revenue enormously and becomes very highly profitable,” he added. “This could happen, but it’s not guaranteed to happen.”

What does this mean for SpaceX shareholders?

While past IPOs offer reasons for caution, SpaceX won’t necessarily follow the same trajectory, Grelck noted.

“We don’t know exactly how it’s going to trade. There are exceptions to the high-volatility, potential negative returns,” he said. “Maybe SpaceX will perform very well and not have a major drawdown.”

One factor that could drive volatility in SpaceX shares is the many ordinary investors expected to pile into the stock, he added. SpaceX is allocating 30% of the IPO shares to retail investors, far above the typical 5% to 10% allocation.

Such investors might be more inclined to dump their shares if the company’s growth falters, rather than ride out the storm, Grelck said.

    Exposure through indexes

SpaceX’s performance will also affect people who don’t directly own its shares, as the stock is slated to be included in major index funds. That means millions of Americans will become shareholders in SpaceX through their 401(k) and other retirement plans, which commonly invest in index funds.

For example, the Nasdaq-100 index recently changed its rules for newly traded companies, paving the way for SpaceX to be added to the index within 15 trading days of its public listing. That could affect people who own shares of the popular QQQ exchange-traded fund, which tracks the index.

The Russell indices also changed their fast-entry rules, allowing SpaceX stock to be included within five trading days of the IPO.

“There’s a lot of money tracking that index, so as SpaceX enters, I think there’s a real possibility that there’s a systematic buying that could support shares, at least to some extent,” Grelck said.

NASA chief defends selection of all-male crew for Artemis III mission

    June 10, 2026 / 3:08 PM EDT / CBS News

NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, responding to questions about the agency’s selection of an all-male crew for the Artemis III mission, said the astronauts were chosen based solely on their experience, skill sets and availability.

Isaacman wrote on the social media platform X that “I have seen reactions ranging from disappointment to outrage.”

One such response on Reddit called the crew announcement “massively upsetting.” “Women represent 50 percent of the population,” the post read. “They deserve at least one seat on every mission from a government run agency.”

Isaacman said he had “personally been to space twice with 50 percent female crews. My closest advisors and some of the smartest engineers I know are women. In our latest NASA leadership organization, nearly 50 percent of the center directors and mission directorate leadership are women.”

He continued: “The last astronaut candidate class selected under this administration was majority female [six women and four men] because they were the best of the best, including one astronaut [Anna Menon] I previously went to space with.”

During an event Tuesday at the Johnson Space Center, NASA revealed the astronauts who had been selected for next year’s Artemis III mission. The flight will test rendezvous and docking procedures in low-Earth orbit with moon landers being built by SpaceX and Blue Origin.

The mission will be commanded by Randy Bresnik, 58, veteran of 149 days in space during a shuttle flight and a space station stay. European Space Agency astronaut Luca Parmitano, 49, a veteran of two long-duration ISS stays, will serve as pilot.

The Artemis III crew (left to right): Andre Douglas, Luca Parmitano, mission commander Randy Bresnik and Frank Rubio. NASA

Also on board: Andre Douglas, 40, a space rookie with broad engineering experience, and Frank Rubio, 49, who logged a U.S.-record 371 days in space aboard the ISS in 2022-23.

In an interview that aired on CNN Wednesday, Bresnik said the selection of an all-male crew for Artemis III was “certainly not intentional.”

“You can look at our astronaut office and see the wide diversity within the office, whether that’s gender or background or nationality or heritage,” he said. “And certainly, the boss had to pick the crew for this flight that he had available that had the skill sets that he needed.”

NASA currently has about 35 active-duty astronauts. The list includes 15 women but does not yet include the six currently in training to join the astronaut corps.

The Artemis II crew, the program’s first to carry astronauts, included Christina Koch, who became the first woman to fly around the moon.

NASA’s Jessica Meir and ESA’s Sophie Adenot are currently in orbit aboard the International Space Station, and Jasmin Moghbeli is in training to command an upcoming SpaceX Crew Dragon flight to the lab complex.

NASA’s Crew 12, currently aboard the International Space Station, includes two women and two men (left to right): Cosmonaut Andrey Fedyaev, Jack Hathaway, Crew 12 commander Jessica Meir and European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot. NASA

Bresnik said two more yet-to-be-announced women are in training for a downstream flight.

“The office gets what it needs when it needs it, and we’ll certainly have all these other people that you mentioned, you know, female military test pilots or just other female astronauts, that’ll be picking up on the follow-on Artemis missions,” Bresnik said.

Jasmin Moghbeli is currently in training to command the Crew 13 flight to the International Space Station. NASA

In any case, the Artemis III crew brings a wide variety of skills to what is essentially a flight test in low-Earth orbit.

Bresnik is a former “TOPGUN” graduate and military test pilot while Parmitano flew high-performance jets for the Italian air force. Rubio holds a doctorate in medicine and is a former UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter pilot. Douglas holds three master’s degrees and a Ph.D. in engineering.

Isaacman said the astronaut office “assigns the crew that gives the mission the best chance of meeting its objectives, taking into account many factors, including the background and expertise of the astronauts, such as test pilot experience, development work on specific programs, and availability.”

He added that critics of the Artemis III crew selection “may not be aware of the pipeline of crews already preparing to launch to the space station, or those who have been undergoing lunar-specific training that would be a better fit for a future surface mission.”

Isaacman concluded by saying Bresnik and his crewmates were “experienced, qualified and deserve to be celebrated for the mission they have been assigned, just as the crews that follow will be celebrated when their time comes.”

Two top Democrat leaders who were hesitant to endorse embattled Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner by name amid his controversies finally relented Tuesday night after he cruised to victory in his primary election.

House Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., issued a seemingly half-hearted joint statement backing Platner as he continues to face heat stemming from a multitude of scandals.

“Over the past year, we have created a path to win a Democratic Senate majority and put a stop to the chaos and damage of the Trump administration by defeating the Republicans who enable his harmful agenda,” they wrote in a statement issued by the Democrat Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) just after Platner was declared the winner.

“In November, Maine voters will elect Graham Platner, and we will win a Senate majority,” they concluded.

In the statement, the New York lawmakers attempted to paint moderate Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, as a radical pro-Trump Republican despite her several breaks with the president.

“Susan Collins has never been more vulnerable after she voted with Trump 96 percent of the time, confirmed his far-right judicial nominees, and took millions from special interests while voting to rip health care away from Mainers,” they listed.

SCANDAL-PLAGUED PLATNER CAPTURES DEMOCRATIC SENATE NOMINATION

Last week, Platner met with Gillibrand and Schumer, among other Democrats, during a crisis trip to Washington, D.C., in the midst of his latest scandal, which, at the time, was related to revelations of an account on a controversial messaging app.

After that meeting, Gillibrand refused to say whether she still supported the progressive candidate.

“I’m very confident we are going to win Maine,” she told reporters. “I do. I have confidence that we are going to win Maine and I have no doubt.”

Schumer also attempted to duck direct questions from reporters at a Capitol Hill press conference following that meeting.

“I met with Graham Platner today, we’re going to beat Susan Collins and take back the Senate,” he said. “We’re going to beat Susan Collins and take back the Senate.”

After he was asked for the fifth time about the meetings, he begrudgingly used Platner’s name to back the candidate.

“As I said, I endorsed Graham Platner,” he said.

Before that meeting, Platner was embroiled in controversy after it was revealed that he has an active account on Kik, an anonymous chatting platform notorious for lax identification methods that have enabled the proliferation of child sexual abuse material.

Platner used as his profile image on the application a sexually suggestive photo of himself shirtless and wearing only a towel around his waist.

Just days after the meetings in D.C., the candidate was accused of physical misconduct, including aggressive behavior, with a former romantic partner. Platner denies those accusations.

‘I love the inflation,’ Trump says as prices rise amid Iran war

    Summary

    • Trump contends inflation will drop after Iran war ends, citing oil supply disruptions
    • Republicans fear inflation backlash could hurt midterm election prospects
    • Analysts warn oil price shocks may persist even if Strait of Hormuz reopens

WASHINGTON, June 10 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump on Wednesday appeared to embrace data showing inflation has risen more than 4%, telling reporters that he “loved” inflation and reiterating his belief that prices will fall as soon as the Iran war ends.

Asked about U.S. government data showing consumer inflation increased at its fastest pace in three years in May, and whether it could hobble his fellow Republicans just months ahead of November’s midterm election, Trump said: “I love the inflation.”

The president then explained how he greenlit a plan to secretly move oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz over concerns of higher costs and increasing inflation. “It was worth it to me,” Trump said about his calculus and calling the operation a success.

“When it’s over, you will see oil drop to where it was before,” Trump said of the larger war. “It’s coming down. It’s going to come down like a rock.”

Trump has called the war on Iran a detour and framed it as a national security issue as Tehran’s closure of the key shipping route has pushed up the cost of gasoline, fertilizer and other goods, contributing to inflation.

Higher prices could also keep the U.S. Federal Reserve from cutting interest rates, which could lower borrowing costs, which Trump has called for since returning to power last year.

Republicans are seeking to maintain control of the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate but are concerned a consumer backlash could hand the reins to Democrats as the cost of living remains a top issue for voters.

Trump himself won the 2024 presidential election in large part because of his promise to lower inflation, but has since seen his approval rating, including on his handling of the cost of living, fall to the lowest level of his political career.

Efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to tanker traffic to move goods have so far stalled, with industry executives and analysts warning that coming weeks could see another oil price shock severe enough to shake the broader financial markets.

    blob:https://www.reuters.com/d9669324-1457-4e0d-a1a6-07151e570a46

Even if Trump and Tehran reach a deal soon, it is expected to take months to get supplies moving, with the disruptions expected through 2026. And while Americans may be more insulated from fuel shocks than other nations, ongoing higher energy prices could dent consumer spending over time.

Last month, Trump said Americans’ financial struggles were not a factor as he pushes for a deal even while threatening renewed attacks on Iran: “I don’t think about Americans’ financial situation. I don’t think about anybody. I think about one thing: We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon.”

The flatlined bid to reauthorize the nation’s controversial spying powers may have a pulse again after President Donald Trump made a key concession to Democrats.

Congress was on its way to reauthorizing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), which is set to expire Friday, but that momentum was halted when Trump tapped his current director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, Bill Pulte, to serve as a temporary chief for the nation’s spy agencies.

Pulte, who is set to take over the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) on June 19, has proven the prime sticking point in a process that has already been marred by disagreements over FISA’s controversial Section 702. Critics have panned him as having no experience in a role that will require him to oversee the nation’s 18 intelligence agencies.

SENATE PUSH TO REAUTHORIZE NATION’S SPY POWERS STUMBLES OVER CONTROVERSIAL TRUMP DECISION

“This is not a problem between Senate Democrats and Senate Republicans, this was the administration throwing a live hand grenade into a critical reauthorization 10 days out,” Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., said.

Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, and Senate Intelligence Committee chair Tom Cotton, R-Ark., produced a compromise, three-year reauthorization with reforms to Section 702 that likely would have advanced absent Trump’s decision to tap Pulte.

Given the logjam, Trump on Wednesday announced that he was actively seeking a replacement to lead ODNI and requested that Congress produce a short-term extension to keep the program running in the meantime.

“I would say this, Pulte is going to be there for a short while, while we pick somebody else,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. “We’re interviewing five different people. They’re all very good, very different, and we’ll put somebody there.”

WHY TRUMP PICKED BILL PULTE TO LEAD US INTELLIGENCE AS CRITICS QUESTION HIS QUALIFICATIONS

    https://www.foxnews.com/video/6393320613112

Top GOP leaders say FISA is essential as extension stalls in Congress

That move could help some Senate Democrats get over the hump.

Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., said that he believed that at least knowing that Pulte would be out could be enough to dislodge some Democrats to support an extension.

“I think knowing who the DNI will be, if it’s somebody that people have confidence in, that makes the FISA question a lot easier,” Kaine said.

For others, Trump’s ambiguity on how long Pulte will stick around remains a troubling prospect.

“That’s a problem,” Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, said. “If Mr. Pulte is gonna be there for an indefinite period, then I can’t vote for an extension. If there’s some timeline, measurable, defined, then I would consider it.”

Lawmakers are currently mulling a possible three-week extension to the program, which has given conservatives and Democrats heartburn.

TRUMP MOVES TO SLASH INTELLIGENCE OFFICE AHEAD OF PERMANENT CHIEF’S ARRIVAL

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., speaks during a Senate Republicans press conference at the U.S. Capitol on June 2, 2026, flanked by Sen. James Lankford, R-Okla., and Sen. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W. Va.(Bill Clark/CQ-Roll Call, Inc.)

It’s one of the rare horseshoe issues in the Capitol where privacy hawks on both sides of the aisle want steep reforms, particularly for warrant requirements to prevent Americans from getting ensnared in information collected on foreigners under Section 702.

That reality means that some Republicans and Democrats wouldn’t vote for the compromise deal anyway — six Republicans joined nearly every Democrat to block a procedural move to reauthorize the program last week.

“Why don’t we surveil the foreigners and not surveil Americans? It’s a new concept,” Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., said.

That means that Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., will need all the help from Democrats that he can get.

CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FOX NEWS APP

“We need Democrat votes,” Thune said. “And, as I’ve said before, I think irrespective of what you think about Bill Pulte, providing the reforms that are included in the 702 reauthorization is a safeguard, regardless of who’s in that job, or which party is in power here.”

But others contend that the Friday deadline isn’t the hard end of the program.

Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said on the Senate floor that the case to rush a reauthorization to the floor by the end of the week “is not true.”

“Existing law allows Section 702 collection to continue under an order from the FISA court for another year, even without congressional reauthorization,” Durbin said. “Congress can and must take the time to get this right.”

(CBS News)

Trump signs $70 billion immigration bill, capping lengthy fight over ICE funding

    June 10, 2026 / 12:08 PM EDT / CBS News

Washington — President Trump signed a bill into law to fund the Department of Homeland Security’s immigration enforcement agencies on Wednesday, bringing an end to a monthslong feud that exposed deep divisions on Capitol Hill.

“This morning I’m thrilled to sign the Secure America Act to immediately and fully fund the Department of Homeland Security through the end of my term, so we won’t have that to be talking about anymore,” the president said in the Oval Office, flanked by key members of Congress and his Cabinet.

The House approved the long-sought $70 billion funding package on Tuesday evening in a 214 to 212 vote, after the Senate passed the measure following an 18-hour marathon vote series late last week. The package funds Immigration and Customs Enforcement and parts of Customs and Border Protection through the end of the Trump administration. Democrats refused for months to fund the agencies without reforms.

“We’ll give the heroes of ICE and Border Patrol — and that’s what they are, they’re heroes, what they have to go through to keep us safe — the support and resources they need to defend our borders, protect our homeland and to keep America safe,” the president added, crediting House Speaker Mike Johnson for passing the bill with a slim majority in the House.

House Republican leaders were on hand for the signing, along with Senate Majority Whip John Barasso. Senate Majority Leader John Thune was not in the room.

Mr. Trump said the legislation “provides crucial funding for domestic law enforcement investigations and combating child exploitation, continuing our work to restore law and order across our nation.”

The immigration funding standoff began in January after two deadly shootings by federal agents in Minneapolis, which prompted Democrats to seek to rein in the immigration agencies. And although Democrats went back and forth with the White House and congressional Republicans over a possible compromise, the talks eventually broke down, leading the GOP to pursue an alternate path forward.

In a departure from the normal appropriations process, Republicans opted to fund the bulk of DHS with help from Democrats, while moving forward with funding for the department’s immigration enforcement agencies on their own. Using the budget reconciliation process, which allows the party in the majority to approve legislation with direct budgetary consequences without help from across the aisle, Senate Republicans pushed the package forward in recent months. But the process faced setbacks of its own.

A pair of developments in the administration threatened to derail the DHS funding. First, a dispute over funding related to the president’s White House East Wing renovation, where he plans to build a massive ballroom, divided Republicans. The initial reconciliation package included $1 billion for the Secret Service for security related to the complex, but intraparty pushback forced GOP leaders to strip it from the final package.

Just as the ballroom disagreement neared a resolution, the Trump administration raised a new hurdle. The Justice Department’s so-called “anti-weaponization” fund, which aimed to provide taxpayer-funded payouts to individuals who alleged the federal government had unlawfully targeted them, prompted intense opposition from congressional Republicans. Senate Democrats threatened to force Republicans to take difficult votes on the fund as part of the reconciliation process, so GOP leaders were forced to scrap plans to begin voting late last month.

After GOP leaders pushed the administration to drop the fund, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche testified before a House committee that the DOJ would not move forward with the payouts. The pledge was ultimately enough to quell GOP anxieties about the fund, and days later, despite hours of handwringing from a handful of Republicans, the Senate approved the package in a 52 to 47 vote.

On Wednesday, the president said Blanche has “tremendous support” in the Senate, after the president nominated him to officially become the attorney general.

NEW YORK, June 10 (Reuters) – Uber Technologies

    UBER.N, opens new tab
sued New York City to block enforcement of a new law that it said would unconstitutionally force it to keep drivers it does not want on its platform.

In a complaint filed late on Tuesday night, Uber said the law against “wrongful deactivations” would improperly shield drivers who engage in dangerous, threatening or other inappropriate behavior, threatening public safety and causing “immediate and irreparable harm” by undermining the company’s reputation and goodwill.

It said the law violates its free-speech and due-process rights under the U.S. Constitution, as well as New York’s state constitution. Uber is seeking a permanent injunction plus costs.

A spokesman for New York City’s law department said on Wednesday it is reviewing the complaint, which Uber filed in Manhattan federal court.

from dismissing drivers absent a “bona fide economic reason” or “just cause.”

Dismissals would be permitted for account sharing, fraud, and “egregious misconduct” such as violence, sexual harassment or assault, and discrimination.

The law is slated to take effect on July 28, following a 46-5 City Council vote in January.

    UBER WARNS OF ‘KANGAROO’ PROCEEDINGS

Uber objected to being required to give 14 days’ notice before deactivations, saying this gave drivers a window for “retaliation” against passengers, and having to potentially rehire drivers from as early as 2019 who did not receive such notice.

It said the law violates passengers’ privacy by requiring they disclose reports of alleged abuse to accused drivers.

The San Francisco-based company also accused New York City of encouraging “kangaroo” proceedings requiring judges, arbitrators and Department of Consumer and Worker Protection officials to assume that deactivations are unjust, and shifting the burden to Uber to prove otherwise.

“We are suing New York City to block a reckless new law that seeks to strip our ability to immediately remove potentially dangerous drivers and fraudsters from our platform, creating an immediate threat to public safety,” Uber said in a statement.

As of June 1, Uber faced

Lyft did not immediately respond to requests for comment on its legal plans.

Trump says “I love the inflation” because U.S. is “taking out” Iranian oil

    2026-06-10T13:26:00-0400 / CBS News

    Washington
    — President Trump on Wednesday applauded the latest inflation spike, saying the numbers are “great” and “I love the inflation” because the U.S. is “taking out” what he called “millions” of barrels of Iranian oil through the Strait of Hormuz and because once the conflict is over, he said oil prices and inflation will drop rapidly.

A reporter asked the president in the Oval Office Wednesday if he’s concerned that the Consumer Price Index rose at an annual rate of 4.2%, up from 3.8% in the prior month and marking the highest level since April 2023. The new inflation numbers were released earlier Wednesday.

“No, I love it,” the president said. “The numbers were great. You know what I really love? I love the inflation. You know why? Because as soon as this war is over. You know, I can say it now, something you didn’t know. Did you know we’ve been taking out millions of barrels of oil? Nobody knows it. You know who doesn’t know about it? Iran, until right now. We took out the other night, 22 ships. Late at night, with no lights. Because they don’t have any radar because we blasted the crap out of it. We took out. That’s why oil’s $85 a barrel.”

While the cost has come down in recent weeks, the cost of Brent crude — the international standard — was about $94 per barrel at midday Wednesday. The president said he expected oil prices to be even higher than they are now, and noted that the stock market has reached all-time highs.

On Truth Social Wednesday afternoon, the president said he directed the military to “execute a secret mission” to support oil tankers and other commercial ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

“Today, I am pleased to announce that this effort has resulted in more than 100 MILLION Barrels of Oil making its way through the Straight, and into the Open Market,” he said. “More than 200 Commercial Ships have safely traveled through the Strait. This wildly successful effort is because the UNITED STATES of AMERICA CONTROLS the Strait of Hormuz — NOT Iran. Their military is defeated, and their economy is lost. It’s over for Iran!”

The president said oil prices still aren’t as high as he anticipated ahead of the war, and the U.S. stock market is hitting “all-time historical highs.” The president said Venezuela was a “great success,” and the U.S. is extracting millions from both Venezuela and Iran.

“I think they’re going to want to make a deal, but we’re going to find out,” he said of Iran.

A reporter asked the president if he expects inflation to fall once the war is over.

“When the war is over? It’s coming down. It’s going to come down like a rock,” he said. “And again, we’re taking out millions, which, I’m just announcing today for the first time, but we’ve been taking out millions of barrels of oil. Millions. Every night.”

Despite the president’s recent comments that the price of gas will come down to pre-war prices, if not lower, federal government predictions disagree with him. The U.S. Energy Information Administration, which in January predicted retail gas in 2027 would be $2.95 on average per gallon, now predicts gas will average $3.64 in 2027. Gas was easily under $3 a gallon on average in January.

Mr. Trump is underwater in polls on the economy, despite the economy and cost of living once being his strongpoints in polling. Higher inflation is also coming in a midterm election year when Republicans are battling to keep control of the House and Senate.

Democrats seized on the president’s inflation comments.

“Trump really said, ‘I love the inflation.’ On camera. For all of America to hear,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer wrote on X. “His contempt for you knows no bounds.”

“Trump just admitted he ‘love[s] the inflation,’” House Minority Whip Katherine Clark wrote. “He loves making your costs skyrocket. He loves being $4 billion richer at your expense.”

Senate Republicans are warning that scandal-plagued oysterman Graham Platner could still defeat Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, if the party fails to take the race seriously.

Republicans are defending several seats in expectedly close races, including Nebraska, Iowa, North Carolina, Ohio and Texas, while seeking to flip Georgia. Maine is different: Sen. Susan Collins’ seat is the only Republican-held Senate seat in a state won by Kamala Harris in 2024, making it Democrats’ most direct path to returning Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., to the majority leader’s office, Republicans said in a memo circulated Wednesday.

“It is a fatal mistake to assume Platner is too damaged to win,” the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) memo obtained by Fox News — addressed to “Interested Parties” — read.

The NRSC agreed that Maine is the “linchpin” of the 35 seats up this year and that despite Platner’s Nazi tattoo, allegations of misogynist violence, arousal from biocide in port-a-johns, and his socialist policy platform, he remains a credible threat to the middle-of-the-road Collins.

“Senator Collins has won tough races before and can win this one, but only if we meet this moment with total urgency,” the NRSC said.

“Because Democrats cannot win the majority without Collins’ seat, they have fully rallied around Graham Platner, an extremely flawed, far-left candidate who secured the nomination last night. Platner has captured his party’s financial backing, outraising Senator Collins in every quarter since entering the race. We must match both the energy and the money to retain the seat,” the memo said.

The NRSC said Democrats don’t view Platner’s race as being about the flawed candidate but rather about usurping power.

COLLINS SECURES GOP NOD IN MAINE SENATE BATTLE THAT COULD DECIDE GOP MAJORITY

The committee said any one of Platner’s multiple scandals would have ended most campaigns, but Democrats remain united around him. The NRSC reported that after former girlfriend Lyndsey Fifield’s allegations against Platner broke, Platner raised $200,000 in one day in what the campaign said was its best haul of the cycle.

    https://www.foxnews.com/video/6396279511112

“The political fundamentals in Maine remain challenging, and it is a fatal mistake to assume Platner is too damaged to win,” the NRSC said.

Collins is the last remaining federal Republican in New England and the only Republican in the Senate north or east of Pennsylvania.

The NRSC reported that Platner is beating Harris’ own margins by seven points while noting Collins has won tough races in the past, but this one is different.

Collins won her last race against former Maine House Speaker Sara Gideon by about eight points, and her last electoral loss was way back in 1994 when now-Sen. Angus King Jr., I-Maine, won the governorship in a four-way contest.

Republicans said in the memo that the biggest story in the past week about Platner is not his latest scandal, but the fact that Democrats are circling the wagons around him even more tightly and “propping him up.”

They cited Silicon Valley Rep. Ro Khanna visiting Maine to hold a gushy interview-slash-ad with Platner and the fact that Democrats keep claiming Collins and Trump are worse than the left-winger.

“Gotta do what you gotta do,” the NRSC quoted former Biden deputy campaign manager Rob Flaherty, while noting that Rhode Island Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse publicly claimed Platner’s foibles are a “lot of nothing.”

They also pointed to one of the most influential Democratic operatives claiming that Platner’s flaws actually bolster his qualifications.

Platner had disparaged former Pennsylvania lieutenant gubernatorial candidate Teddy Daniels after video of the Purple Heart recipient being besieged and gravely wounded by the Taliban surfaced several years ago.

“We’ve got a f—ed up guy who could be 100 times more f—ed up than he is and he’d never be as f—ed up as what we’ve got in Washington,” said 1992 Bill Clinton campaign architect James Carville, who suggested that Platner’s apparent PTSD should be a symbol on the Hill as to why neoconservatives have been wrong about war powers.

“This is not a party abandoning its nominee. This is a party rationalizing, accepting, and preparing to fight,” the NRSC said.

“Republicans need to match that urgency immediately. Define Platner. Defend Collins. Resource Maine,” they said. “Senator Collins has proven time and time again, through her work ethic and commitment to the people of Maine and America, that she will prevail.”

“This race can be won, but it will not win itself.”
